CLUB UPDATE

A NOTE FROM YOUR GENERAL MANAGER

Welcome to Spring! The ACC Women’s Championship was a huge success as many members donated their time to volunteer, and it was greatly appreciated! Congratulations to Clemson for their victorious win against Virginia in a close match up Sunday. Next up is our 2023 Spring Sedgefield Cup Member-Guest tournament that is being hosted at the end of the month This summer we also welcome back the AJGA as we host them again June 12-16. We will need volunteers again for this event, so we look forward to having you join us once it is announced

Live After Five started on Tuesday, April 18 and filled the patio. The weather was perfect, music fantastic and cuisine superb. We are all greatly enjoying the beautiful patio expansion that was completed about a year ago, time sure does fly! Summer is around the corner and I hope we have many, many more days like that. Our 2023 pool season will be here before we know it and we will have new lounge chairs on the deck, pole lights surrounding the pool, revamped diving boards and a freshly painted slide. It should be a fun summer here at Sedgefield!

The clubhouse exterior has also had a small face lift, replacing the rotten wood and windows on the back of the clubhouse has given it a fresh look for the upcoming season Over the next year we will continue to replace windows and wood around the clubhouse exterior We also plan to update both the Sam Snead Cottage and Apartment as soon as possible. With new flooring throughout, updated bathrooms and ceilings on the agenda, they will feel much more like home for all those visiting We have replaced the HVAC in the café dining area and kitchen and we also have a new grill on the way for our summer night cookouts. Inside the clubhouse kitchen, we also plan to shift some things around We will be moving the dry food storage room upstairs to the main kitchen so that during peak times it will be more efficient for our kitchen team

Now a look at The Cardinal! The back of the clubhouse stair cases should be completed at this time and look fantastic We plan to strip and paint or stain the patio next to Pete’s Tavern to give it a fresh look for all members and visitors. The patio has new umbrellas and fresh greenery to make it a more relaxed atmosphere while you are enjoying lunch or a drink from Pete's Place All of the carpet replacement should be completed with the pro shop being moved upstairs. Guests every day walk around the clubhouse asking “where’s the pro shop”. So, now the bag drop off, cart staging, and pro shop are on the same level with the bag drop and cart station being moved next to the practice green All of these changes are to be more efficient and increase member services to all of those visiting Oh, and by the way, a NEW MENU! Chris Terry and his team really go above and beyond to make your

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF CATERING

If you're anything like me, you've likely prepared your garden for the upcoming influx of spring plants that will soon hit your local garden supply store The idea of home-grown cucumbers, vine-ripened tomatoes, and juicy watermelon fills my mind with thoughts of delicious farm-to-table recipes. This time of year offers the opportunity to shop locally for North Carolina-grown produce, with nothing quite comparing to hand-picked NC strawberries straight from the fields Blended with fresh greens, additional berries, and candied nuts, and tossed with a champagne vinaigrette, they make for a light and refreshing summer salad It's just one of the many ideas that get my taste buds excited for the season!

If you're planning an event at Sedgefield or the Cardinal by Pete Dye, I urge you to sit down with Chef Ron and I to discuss your vision and ideas We have an unlimited range of options, from specialty themes to menu styles, and we're excited to bring your ideas to life Whether you're looking for farm-to-table freshness or a seasonal selection of menu items, like the summer berry salad you desire, we're thrilled to work with you to plan your next special celebration You can bring us your own ideas or let us help create a vision that complements your event Either way, we're here to help and excited to plan your next event!

In the meantime, I hope to see you preparing your gardens for the season or enjoying one of our fresh, garden-inspired menu options in the coming weeks

See you soon, Travis

SUPERINTENDENT'S CORNER

A NOTE FROM YOUR SEDGEFIELD SUPERINTENDENT

The golfing season is finally upon us and the majority of our turf appears to have survived this past winter’s weather with very minimal damage and we all should be looking forward to a season of warm weather and great turf conditions There are a few small areas on a couple of holes that we will need to address and sod these damaged areas It is mostly contained to holes 5 & 10 along the right side of the fairway in the landing zones We will be addressing these areas and sodding them while we are closed for aerification May 1-8.

Like I mentioned before we will be aerifying the greens, tees, and fairways May 1-8 Considering that the turf made it through the winter well and is now healthy, it will allow for us to heal from this process in a timely manner and be back to great golfing conditions in just a few short weeks. Please keep in mind that with warmer weather means that we will also begin our normal agronomic practices of verti-grooming the greens and lightly sanding them with ultra-fine sand every Monday during our growing season. This process is very minimal in disruption but is a vital part to us being able to provide you with the best possible greens surfaces week in and week out during the season

Come on out and enjoy the perfect golfing weather before the summer heat sets in. Hope to see you around the course

A NOTE FROM YOUR CARDINAL SUPERINTENDENT

As I was preparing to write this letter, I read back to last year’s May newsletter in which I wrote about how the last two years we had come out of winter with very little winter damage, and only had a few collar areas to sod I wish I could deliver the same good news this year As most of you have seen, we may not be as lucky this time around While the collar damage is NOT more significant than in years past, it is looking like we have some large areas in a few fairways that are behind and may need to be repaired.

As I am writing this on the 12th of April, it is still a little early to know the full extent of the damage Just this week we have had a few light frosts; this is not the ideal warm and humid weather that really gets the Bermuda grass jumping out of the ground. The plan is over the next few weeks to fertilize all short cut areas Along with warmer weather, the additional fertility will get the grass growing more aggressively We will also continue to slice though the areas that are behind to alleviate soil compaction and warm up the soil to help promote growth. Over the course of the next five to six weeks, I am hopeful that we will see these areas shrink, and at that time we will know more about the extent of the winter damage and the areas that we will need to sod The collar damage is much more black and white We already know the few areas that need sod, and we will begin picking away at that right away.

What I ask of you is to please obey to cart rule on each hole each day

Holes 6, 7, 13, 17, and 18 will be cart path only. This will help tremendously to grow these areas in as much as possible. Thank you in advance for your help and support as we work to improve this areas on the course

See you on the course!

TEE IT UP AT THE CARDINAL

A NOTE FROM YOUR HEAD GOLF PROFESSIONAL

With construction at the Cardinal nearly complete, I am excited to share our plans for providing a more service-oriented experience to visitors As you may already know, the Golf Shop has been relocated to the first floor of the clubhouse If you haven't visited in a while, please stop by and check it out To locate the Golf Shop, simply use the front doors of the clubhouse and make your way inside. You'll find everything you need in one convenient location Dye's Tavern and the Golf Shop are conveniently situated next to each other, making it easy to grab a bite to eat before heading over to the shop. When you arrive to play golf, our new bag drop area is located next to the putting green. Our cart staff will be available to assist you with your clubs, range balls, and/or meet you at your car to provide a superior service experience Upon arrival, our staff may ask for your name and starting time. This information helps our new staff get to know you better, deliver your clubs to the correct cart, and notify the Golf Shop of your arrival If you're here to hit some balls, our bag stand team will have range balls ready for you. These efforts are all designed to enhance your experience every time you visit the club Welcome to the New Cardinal!

Unfortunately, the weather in April did not cooperate with us for our first two events of the season, so there's not much to report on that front However, we did have two Hole In One's as of the time of writing this article Ryan Wilson hit an ace on Hole #12, and Jimmy Clarke did the same on Hole #8 Let's keep them coming! If you're not already in the Hole In One Club, now might be a good time to consider it. You don't want to miss out on some shop credit and a little insurance.

We have our first major tournament of the year coming up this month: the Cardinal Men's Member/Member on May 20 and 21. This is a twoperson team event, with 18 holes of golf played on Saturday and Sunday Teams will be flighted based on their total team handicap (using their 12-month low). After 36 holes of golf, flight winners will compete in a three-hole shootout to determine the overall Member/Member Championship It will be a fantastic weekend of golf, food, drinks, and fellowship with other members. To sign up, simply use the McConnell Golf app and click the button at the bottom of the home page This event is open to all Sedgefield and Cardinal male golf members (no dependents).

Our Ladies and Juniors Operation36 program has just concluded, and I want to express how proud I am of all the new players we have coming into the game. This semester, we saw some very impressive improvement from our returning juniors, and we were thrilled to see so many smiling faces among our newest students On the ladies' side, I must say, WOW! The program has grown to 24 ladies this semester, with more than half of them being first-time golfers The challenges we set up each week make learning fun and less stressful One of the greatest highlights of teaching juniors and ladies is seeing the proverbial light bulb go off in their brains when they learn a new skill and see it work as intended

The smile that follows is amazing and makes what we do very special. Thank you for a great semester, and keep playing the game!

See you around the clubhouse!

FITNESS NEWS

A NOTE FROM YOUR DIRECTOR OF FITNESS

As we emerge from what seemed like a chilly and very rainy spring season, I am reminded of how a little sunshine, warmer temperatures and fresh air can transform our mood and energy. Spending time outside playing golf, tennis, gardening or simply taking a walk has been linked to improved sleep, emotional wellness and mental energy As we enjoy the warmer weather and fresh air, plan to join us for some outdoor classes and events including Aquatic classes, 5K Walk/Run and a special Sunset Yoga class

It's time to get outdors!

I look forward to seeing you at the fitness center!

AQUATICS

Aquatic exercise is a popular form of low-impact exercise that can be used as both a mode of exercise and a mode of recovery Aquatic exercise takes the pressure off bones and joints while the water provides resistance, which can help build endurance and strengthen muscles as well as improve cardiovascular fitness
