A WORD FROM OUR GENERAL MANAGER/COO Dear Members, Operating the Club for over a year now with COVID-19 guidelines in place has been both eye-opening and a valuable learning experience. Despite the obstacles of navigating a safe and enjoyable experience for members, guests, and staff, we were able to be creative and implement new and innovative programming to engage and serve the membership. We have all had to adapt in ways we could never have imagined, and I truly appreciate your continued support and patience as we navigate through this pandemic. As spring approaches and Club usage begins to increase, I wanted to take this opportunity to assure you that we will continue operating with everyone’s safety as our top priority. To continue fighting the spread of the COVID-19 virus, we must stay vigilant in our sanitizing and social distancing efforts. We will continue to follow guidelines from the Governor and local Baltimore City and County Officials and modify our operations where required. As the vaccine becomes more readily available and more members are getting vaccinated, we must keep in mind that the virus is still here and highly contagious, particularly as we read about the new variants. Although the number of positive cases in Maryland is decreasing, we all must do our part and not let our guards down.
an enjoyable pool experience for the membership. With taking feedback into consideration, the pool reservation system will remain in place this season with two reservation timeslots available, 10:00am to 1:30pm and 2:00pm to 8:00pm, to allow for longer durations of stay at the pool.
Further, we recognize those members who have been vaccinated; however, we are reminding you that we are still required to abide by the mandates from the state, city, and county. We will be requiring health questionnaires for each visit to BCC. Again, we urge that all members fill out the questionnaire thoroughly and honestly and abide by all BCC COVID-19 guidelines and standards. BCC was and will continue to be a favorite and safer place for our members and staff because of these policies.
Positive and constructive feedback from the membership is encouraging and is what helps us stay innovative and noted as one of the top clubs in the country. Thank you for your understanding and support, and know that my door is always open should you have any questions or concerns. ◆
Last summer, we implemented reservations for the pool area to abide by capacity restrictions and allow for social distancing and proper sanitizing of common areas, pool furniture, and accessories. The reservations system allowed us to stay organized and safe while still providing
We are not permitted to turn the page back to normalcy; however, you will see small steps towards it. These will include amenities back on the golf courses and subtle changes in other areas of the Club that have been deemed low risk. We are looking forward to another great season at BCC and one that we expect to be incredibly busy.
Sincerely,
M. Kent Johnson, CCM General Manager/COO

Great People Make Favorite & Safer Places BCC has created an actionable statement that helps define our philosophy known as The Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. Below is a small sample of staff members who are helping to make BCC your favorite place. ◆
January Staff Member of the Month Jarred Ruiz, Server Congratulations to our Server Jarred for being named January Staff Member of the Month! Jarred is always willing to go above and beyond his regular duties to help other departments, and he does it with a smile. He lends a helping hand to our Fitness & Wellness Team on Thursdays at Roland Park and is willing to jump in and help our Maintenance Team with different projects. Jarred has proven himself to be an asset to our Food & Beverage Team and the Club as a whole. Additionally, he is pursuing an IT career and has been promoted to an IT position at the Club! Way to go, Jarred!
Leadership Award Shelby Parker, Assistant Food & Beverage Manager We congratulate Shelby for receiving the Exceptional Leadership Award! She has greatly developed her leadership skills since she started in her role. She takes initiative in helping during food service and keeping morale high for the Food & Beverage Team. Shelby’s willingness to learn allows her to engage in receiving constructive feedback and having more open and honest conversations. She brings a positive and energetic mindset to work every day and is always willing to lend a hand! Congratulations Shelby on receiving this well-deserved award!
Simple Truth Award Abby Michael, Member Relations Manager Jarred Ruiz, Server Abby and Jarred truly embodied the Simple Truth when they worked together to make one of our youngest members smile during this past holiday season! Abby learned that the member’s family would not be able to attend Brunch with Santa due to an upcoming surgery, and unfortunately, they had to cancel their reservation. To brighten their holiday spirits, Abby notified the BCC team, and they sprang into action! Our Pastry team made Christmas cookies while our Events Team helped with preparations for the Santa suit. Abby and Jarred (dressed as Santa Claus) stopped by the member’s home to drop off Christmas cookies and a stuffed Santa and a reindeer toy. To say that this family was excited about the surprise is an understatement! 2

MEMBERSHIP Dear Members, I hope you have had a chance to review the names of proposed candidates that are currently in the review stage of the membership process. Posted in Lifestyle, weekly e-blasts, our website, and bulletin boards, we want to make sure these names are easily accessible for everyone. First of all, thank you all for proposing your friends and family! While this list seems to be ever-growing week to week, it is important to note our net attrition. The national average for annual attrition at country clubs is between 4-7%. BCC’s attrition falls around 4%, so for a club our size, that is about 70 members each year. Being aware of these figures helps further educate everyone on why your participation and engagement in promoting BCC to your friends and family is so important.

in the garden —
a new look —

We are excited to start the 2021 gardening season which allows us to utilize fresh herbs and edible flowers from our herb garden and fresh produce from our production garden. Being able to use hyperlocal ingredients and prepare them for the membership gives us an enormous amount of satisfaction. We can’t wait to see all the varieties throughout the season and what they will look like on the plate.
The 2021 season is upon us. We will be bringing back the newest food staple, the “turn”-over. The BCC hot pocket is made from housemade pretzel dough and filled with BCC smoked brisket, bourbon BBQ sauce, and smoked Gouda cheese. Also, be on the lookout for other sandwich specials and small pop-ups throughout the season.
With Phase 1 of the Lifestyle Facilities Master Plan beginning in September, the entire Culinary Team is extremely excited at the prospect of a new and rejuvenated kitchen. While having a new kitchen is great, the culinary expectation will continue to rise even further. Our team is up to the challenge and we cannot wait to provide the membership continued, elevated, and wonderful experiences as we move forward.
Chef Michael is back and ready to go for the 2021 season. We will continue to have themed nights, fun and exciting pop-up events, and much more. He has created this season’s menu, bringing back some of the staples and introducing some new and inventive offerings.
As we move into a fun-filled and fast-paced spring and summer season at Five Farms, we are always excited to see both new and familiar faces. Our whole Culinary Team loves what we do and it would not be possible without the support of each and every one of our members. So, from your Baltimore Country Club Culinary Team, we say thank you for letting us serve you and your families and we hope to continue striving to provide countless memories and unforgettable culinary experiences. ◆ 5

GROUNDS
GREENKEEPER'S UPDATE by Tim Kennelly, CGCS, Head Greenkeeper During winter, our Golf & Grounds Team stayed busy with the weekly weather events (snow and ice) to ensure the safety of members, staff, and guests who arrive at both the Roland Park and Five Farms locations. It was the first time in many years that the entire month of February was entirely covered in snow at our Five Farms location. Both courses have fared very well during the winter months, and I am often asked whether snow is harmful to the grass and golf courses. Since our annual average of snow is approximately 20 inches per year, we have found that snow cover is a good thing because it insulates the turf from cold temperature extremes and severe temperature fluctuations. Snow cover also protects turf from winter wind desiccation. Snow coverage is rarely a problem for turf because gas exchange between the soil and atmosphere is not entirely restricted. Ice, on the other hand, if it persists for too long, is much more dangerous to turf health. Since our playing surfaces are predominately creeping bentgrass, ice is not a concern because creeping bentgrass possesses excellent winter tolerance. In contrast, a green surface such as poa annua may be vulnerable to damage once continuous snow and ice coverage reaches 40 days or more. Once the snow disappeared in March, a few areas remained closed for play until we received consistently warmer temperatures. Due to heavy use on the Driving Range grass areas, we rely on artificial surfaces to preserve grass when conditions do not allow for recovery. Last winter, our staff installed covers on areas of the courses to increase surface and soil temperatures to encourage top growth, seed germination, and root growth in thin areas. The grass tees will open once temperatures are consistently between 60-75 degrees to ensure their adequate recovery. On March 31, 2020, under Governor Hogan’s order, all BCC sporting facilities (including golf) were closed and reopened in early May. Both courses received record rounds of play, and we expect the 2021 season to be just as busy. The Club and our operation remain committed to adapting and changing during these ever-changing times and continue to operate with the highest regard for staff ’s safety and welfare and those who enter the property. Like last year,
our goal remains the same: to provide two well-conditioned golf courses and well-manicured grounds that reflect the pride and professionalism of both our golf courses and Grounds Team. As the golf courses open for play, you will notice many course accessories have been placed back on the courses. They include benches at select tee locations, trash receptacles, bunker rakes, and ball retrievers near the water hazards on the East Course. Regarding the flag poles, you may remove the poles if you desire; however, the noodles will remain for a period of time. We look forward to a great 2021 golf season. ◆

CONGRATULATIONS BCC CADDIES It gives us great pleasure to announce that Rebecca Lannon and Varada Maulkhan, two caddies from our Caddie Program, have been selected as recipients of the prestigious Evans Scholarship. The Evans Scholarship is the largest caddie scholarship program in the United States. Since 1930 they have sent more than 11,000 hard-working caddies to college through their program. This scholarship offers recipients full four-year tuition and housing scholarships to one of 19 major universities, including most Big 10 universities. In fact, the University of Maryland at College Park is in the process of constructing an Evans Scholar house that will accommodate approximately forty future scholars each year. In addition, the BMW Championship that is taking place this coming August at Caves Valley is a key funding source for the Evans Scholarship as well as individual donations through the Par Club, which many of our BCC members have contributed to over the years. Rebecca and Varada join BCC Caddie and Evans Scholar Samantha Lannon, soon to be a graduate of Ohio State University, in this remarkable achievement and honor. Get to know a little more about Rebecca and Varada. Rebecca Lannon BCC Caddie for 3 years Rebecca is the youngest of three and has always looked up to her sister, previous Evans Scholarship recipient Samantha Lannon. She created her path in life by following her passion for music. Rebecca enjoys playing instruments and is working on writing and producing an album. She plans to study Communication and Music Technology in college. Varada Maulkhan BCC Caddie for 2 years As the daughter of Guyanese immigrants, the value of hard work was ingrained in her from an early age. She has been playing golf for ten years and has gained many life lessons from the game. Varada loves teaching and has had several opportunities to teach young children. This has given her great respect for teachers and the perseverance it takes in that profession. The First Tee of Greater Baltimore has offered her many opportunities to play at great golf courses, and she is very thankful. Varada plans to study Secondary Education and History in college. We want to thank the Caddie Committee: Steve Colnitis, Joe Fields, Frank Palmer, John Leahy, and Frank Cannon, the Golf Committee, Board of Governors, and the entire BCC membership for continually supporting our Caddie Program. Because of your efforts, the Club is making a difference in the lives of our youth. ◆ 15
