MEMBERSHIP However, setting 2020 aside, it might surprise people to learn that over the past five years, only 6.2% of members proposed someone for membership at BCC (out of 2,719 eligible members, only 169 proposed candidates). Most of us probably have someone in mind that would make a great BCC member, so why is the proposal rate so low? For some, the timing isn’t right or it just isn’t ‘top of mind’. For others, proposing a new member seems like it would take a lot of time and effort and they don’t know where to begin.

Propose Your Friends IN THE NEW YEAR! Dear Fellow Members, New Year’s resolutions…we all make them, many of us break them, and at least a few of us have spent way too much money on a gym membership we never used. This year, consider a New Year’s resolution that is easy to keep and will guarantee that you get more enjoyment out of 2021—proposing a friend or family member for membership at BCC. 2020 was obviously a challenging year for Baltimore Country Club. In spite of BCC’s nimble response to the pandemic and creative lineup of virtual events, we lost revenue in certain areas, especially large and private events. Other ‘side effects’ of 2020’s tough conditions were higher rates of attrition from the Club and a reduced number of new member proposals.

The good news is that the proposal process is easier than you think and that there are plenty of people and resources available to support you. If you are thinking of proposing a new member, please contact Director of Membership Casey Schell at cschell@bcc1898.com or call 410.554.8004. Casey can explain the process and timing, address any questions and concerns you may have, and get you started. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying a cocktail on the Adirondacks with the friends or family you proposed, while supporting the Club in the process. And just think, you’ll be able to say you kept your New Year’s resolution for 2021 and you never even had to get on the scale! ◆ Happy New Year!

Mary Briggs, Chair, Membership Committee

À LA CARTE DINING

ELEVATING YOUR MEMBER EXPERIENCE with Dear Members, At BCC, our goal is always to follow our Simple Truth: Great People Make Favorite Places. We strive to ensure every interaction members have at the Club is enjoyable and memorable. Our Culinary and Food & Beverage Teams take pride in creating the perfect dining experience for members and guests— providing exceptional service at all times. In an effort to continue to raise the bar of our service levels, the Club is introducing Humm®, a digital live feedback platform, to the À la Carte dining experience.

the future. Restaurant managers and servers will present members with a Humm® Feedback Tablet at the end of their dining service beginning in January 2021. Members will be prompted to respond to the following six questions on the Humm® Feedback Tablet: Were you kindly greeted when you arrived? Absolutely Need Improvement Satisfactory Not at All Did the variety of the menu meet your expectations? Very Satisfied Need Improvement Satisfied Not at All Was your server attentive and available to your needs throughout your meal? Absolutely Need Improvement Satisfactory Not at All Did the quality of your meal meet your expectations? Very Satisfied Need Improvement Satisfied Not at All

All tablets will be sanitized after each use

Humm® will provide the Club with live data of member feedback and your overall Club experience, not excluding unpleasant experiences. One of the benefits of this digital platform is the ability to collect member feedback in realtime. In the event that a member has a negative dining experience, our Management Team is notified instantly. We will be able to monitor key performance metrics, analyze trends, and improve consistency. In addition to providing the Club with live input and overall member sentiment, the Humm® platform will also help us track staff performance, which will enhance our meetings, training, performance reviews, and goal setting.

Was the dining room manager visible and available? Absolutely Need Improvement Satisfactory Not at All Is there anything else you would like to share about the dining experience? Type in your feedback Thank you in advance for your participation. ◆

Michael Nyerges Assistant General Manager

À la Carte dining will be the first area of the Club where we will be implementing Humm® Feedback Tablets. Our goal is to incorporate Humm® in other areas of the Club in 3

FITNESS & WELLNESS

Starting HEALTHY HABITS in 2021! Are you ready for a fresh start this year? Your BCC Fitness and Wellness Team sure is! Here are some tips to ensure 2021 is the year you meet your health goals. ◆

WELLNESS TIP

From Therapeutic Yoga Instructor Rebecca Printen The most effective way to start a new habit is to replace an old one, so try using yoga as a stand in for one you would like to quit. Rather than “doom scrolling” first thing in the morning, try a 10-minute easy yoga routine. Studies show daily or even weekly yoga sessions boost mood and ease mental stress. If you are like most people who are feeling stressed right now, try this new habit. It will help support you in the upcoming winter months. Try an Alignment Yoga class with Rebecca Printen, registered yoga therapist. Virtual private or duet sessions are available through Zoom. For more information, contact Rebecca Printen at rprinten@bcc1898.com

HEALTH TIP

from Health & Life Coach Vanessa O’Brey When you are on a journey to improve your health and wellness, it can be difficult to stick to healthy habits. A health coach can help make it easier for you to commit to one’s healthier choices without sacrificing. To kick off 2021 right, here are helpful tips to help you stay on track with your nutrition as you approach the new year:

Drink Water

Exercise/Move More

Proper Meal Planning

Watch Your Portions

Drink in Moderation

Chew Slowly

Be Kind to Yourself

GOLF

2021 & Beyond: RE-IMAGINING GOLF AT BCC Dear Members, As we prepare for the 2021 golf season, we are making a shift in the philosophy of developing our current and future Golf Professionals. The PGA of America’s 29,000 plus Golf Professionals are the recognized leaders and teachers in golf. Our responsibility as a top 100 club is to recruit, develop, and mentor these future leaders in their career goals. To accomplish this, we need to align ourselves and our operations with the PGA’s three pillars of education: executive management, teaching/coaching, and golf operations. We have met with our Golf Professionals to identify potential career paths and timelines. With our guidance, each Professional has chosen a path that aligns with their strengths and career goals in executive management, instruction and player development, or as Director of Golf/Head Professional. We are excited to see them develop in their new roles and achieve their career goals. For the most part, these roadmaps will either be in the Director of Golf/Head Professional or Instruction/Teaching

arenas. One of the most significant changes you will see moving forward is the rotation of responsibilities from year to year. This will allow each Golf Professional to grow their knowledge and experience to become more well-rounded Golf Professionals. The days of a young Assistant Golf Professional staying at the Club for an extended period of time (four to five years) are in the past. This will ensure that all young Golf Professionals that begin or come through BCC are properly placed to ensure their development and success in the golf industry. There will be certain Golf Professionals that will extend beyond the average five-year time frame as they are on the doorstep of achieving their ultimate goal of Director of Golf/ Director of Instruction. As a Club, we take great pride in the development and advancement of our staff. Instruction & Player Development Our goal is to provide our members with a comprehensive approach to instruction that is innovative, engaging, and accessible to all players of all skills and abilities. We will offer diverse and personalized programs that will utilize state-of-art technology. Golf Professionals on the Instructional Team will be mentored

and exposed to every aspect of teaching/ coaching to provide members with the best information and be primed and ready for successful careers in the golf industry in their respective expertise. Golf Operations In addition to our current Golf Professionals on the Operations team, we are excited to announce the addition of a Lead Assistant Golf Professional. This will be an individual with proven work experience at a high-end private facility similar to Baltimore Country Club. This Lead Assistant will be responsible for assisting Nick Cannon with overseeing all tournament operations, mentorship of our Golf Professionals, merchandising, and most importantly, providing the members and their guests at Baltimore Country Club with an unparalleled golf experience. We appreciate your support in the growth and development of our Professional staff here at BCC. Cheers to an amazing 2021 golf season! ◆

TIPS FROM THE PRO By Pat Coyner, Lead Instructor

Maximizing Your Off-Season Practice Many of us take time off during the winter months. Enjoying the holidays, taking vacations, and simply recharging our batteries are all suitable reasons to put the clubs away until springtime. We all need to take breaks from golf, but the winter months can also be the best time to make significant changes to our games, and provides the necessary time for these changes to become reliable once we do hit the golf course again. The best way to make significant improvements is to first identify your current strengths and weaknesses. An honest assessment of your golf game can help pinpoint areas you should work on. Some ways to identify your current strengths and weaknesses are: • Lessons with a member of BCC's Instructional Team • TrackMan Combine evaluation (60 shot “test” to evaluate ball striking) • Fitness and functional movement screening • Course management and mental focus evaluation • Statistical analysis of all parts of your game

Making changes takes time. Our swing mechanics are a result of ingrained motor patterns, and the only way to change these patterns is to break them down and develop new ones. The winter months are the best time to make changes because we are not focused on our next round of golf. We are not as focused on results, we don’t have consequences for every shot, and we don’t have the pressure of trying to shoot a good score. Therefore, the off-season is the perfect time to commit to new swing mechanics, an improved short game, and renewed motivation for the coming season. To start your winter program, please contact your BCC Instructional Staff for more information. Here’s to a great 2021 season! ◆ 11

RACQUETS

SAFER INDOOR PLAY AT BCC By Wade Johnstone, Director of Squash As we continue in these uncertain times of COVID-19 and sports are moving indoors due to the colder weather, don’t forget about Squash, Squash 57, and Pickleball at Roland Park. If you are uncomfortable playing a full match, there are still great opportunities to keep yourself in shape and active while staying safe. Adhering to the guidelines mandated by Governor Hogan and local government officials, you can still maintain physical distancing (six feet) from your opponent by playing some simple games or drills. Indoor Pickleball is also a great option as the net separates players from their opponents and you can play singles and

doubles. So don’t forget to take this opportunity to come in and learn Squash, Squash 57, and Pickleball or to continue these fantastic, highly enjoyable and social sports. Lessons are always available with our top Racquets’ professionals if needed. I look forward to seeing you on the courts. ◆ Best Regards,
