LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT his summer, I have truly enjoyed spending time at the West Clubhouse pool, vacationing with friends at 30A, golfing at Glen Echo Country Club as well as Dalhousie Golf Club, attending many BBQs and birthday parties and spending lots of time with my family. I hope all of you are making wonderful memories and the MAC is part of those memories. While the end of summer is quickly approaching, there is still ample time to take advantage of all the amenities we offer, including the West pool which is at full steam. One of the benefits of being a Member of the Missouri Athletic Club is the privilege to use facilities at Clubs across the U.S. and throughout the world. All you need to do is make reservations directly with the appropriate club while providing your Missouri Athletic Club membership number. Once reservations are made, contact the Membership Office to request a “letter of introduction” to send to the reciprocal Club, then you are all set. If you travel, this is a great benefit, so I invite you all take advantage of this opportunity. I wanted to also highlight the new fitness services offered at the West Clubhouse in conjunction with SSM that include physical therapy with services such as Functional Movement Screens (FMS). I was able to take advantage of the FMS with Billy Ferris, a Patient Care Manager. The screen consisted of seven fundamental movement patterns and four clearing tests (ankle, shoulder, two back). The first objective of the screen is to discover if any movements create pain (all movements should be pain-free). The second objective is to identify impairments in mobility and stability of various body segments during each of the seven movement patterns. The final objective is to provide corrective exercises that can be incorporated into your weekly fitness program. This service is offered through a partnership we have with SSM. Now, MAC Members have access to physical therapy at our West Clubhouse. If you are interested in this service, call 314-822-3205 to schedule your session. Billy is amazing and I promised him I would follow his recommended exercise plan. So far, I’m holding true to that promise! The MAC membership base continues to grow. Over the past year, we have added 94 new Members to our Club. When the board had the unfortunate task of closing the Clubhouses due to the pandemic, we were a Club of 2,370 members. I’m happy to say we now have 2,350 Members! We are almost back to our pre-pandemic state. THANK YOU for supporting the

T

MAC, even when we were closed. The commitment our Members to the long-term success of the MAC is outstanding. The MAC is strong because of you! Once we surpass our pre-pandemic Member count, we have plans to host several Member appreciation nights. I’m also excited to share some news! The Board has approved two new capital projects which are targeted to kick off in September. First, we will remodel the West Clubhouse dining room. The dining room will soon look and feel like the 1903 Bar and offer a new dining experience. We are targeting completion of this project before Thanksgiving 2021. Second, we will be adding a canopy to the patio, and installing heaters, fans and misting cooling apparatus, as well as an outdoor cooking station. This will allow us to extend the season for what has become one of our more popular destinations. We look forward to many Members enjoying these new spaces. MEMBER HIGHLIGHT: As I mentioned in my previous articles, I intend to highlight Members around the Club who serve selflessly. This month, I’d like to highlight Past President Bugh (20132014), Past President Mark Belew (1997-1998), Past President Scott Engelbrecht (2007-2008) and Past President Lodewyck for their support of the Preservation Foundation Golf Tournament. This year, the tournament takes place on Aug. 30 at Glen Echo. Their dedication to the event over the years has been amazing. I have enjoyed watching these four Past Presidents have fun organizing the tournament and raising more than $845,000 for the Preservation Foundation. Past Presidents Bugh, Belew, Engelbrecht and Lodewyck, thank you for your selfless service to the MAC. The MAC is a better place because of you! Don’t forget about two other special events this month: the Father-Daughter Banquet on Aug. 12 and the first event of our inaugural Speaker Series, Hockey Night in STL on Aug. 25. If you see me around the Club, make sure you sure stop me and engage me. I’m excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club and proud to tell everyone I am a Member of this premier Club. Sincerely,

Angie Minges, President Missouri Athletic Club

JULY 2021 F 5

LETTER FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER ugust is Foundations’ Month! This month, we focus on how our foundations and how they support the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture. This past year in particular, the Preservation Foundation has been on the minds of many Members as we saw the restoration and rejuvenation of our historic Downtown Clubhouse come to life. With the help of a large grant from the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation and generous donations from Members, a stunning transformation took place, and I love seeing it every time I drive up to the Clubhouse! I never thought I’d see this project completed in my lifetime, and it’s all because of the Preservation Foundation and our awesome Members participating in various fundraisers. This month, you will see green chits scattered around the Clubhouse. They provide you an opportunity to throw in $5 or whatever you feel is appropriate to help continue to the preservation of the Downtown Clubhouse and other historically significant structures in the City of St. Louis. Our annual golf tournament is at the end of the month on Aug. 30, and it’s a fun way to raise money for the MAC’s foundations. We’re always looking for additional auction prizes that will allow us to raise funds for the foundations, so if you or your business has something to offer, please let Katie Maurer know at kmaurer@ mac-stl.org. Even if you are not a golfer, come join us at Glen Echo Country Club that evening for dinner, the auction and other festivities. It’s an evening full of MAC camaraderie and fellowship all for a great cause: the Preservation Foundation. This year, we have something new, and we hope everyone is as excited about it as we are! In 2021, you have the opportunity to win a three-year lease of an Acura MDX from golf tournament presenting sponsor Mungenast St. Louis Acura. This is an opportunity for someone to win a great car for three years at no cost to them. Raffle tickets are $125 apiece or $500 for five. Visit

A

the foundations page on the MAC website to purchase yours! All proceeds go into our Preservation Foundation, and at the end of the day, someone’s going to walk away with a great new car. Oh, and you get to pick it out! Special thanks to Kurt Mungenast and his whole team at the dealership who are huge supporters of the MAC! EMPLOYEE HIGHLIGHT: To mirror President Minges’ Member Highlight, I’d like to recognize Gena Willis, the most awesome executive assistant that ever lived. Gena is my righthand person and keeps me out of trouble most days. She keeps me on track and on time, and the MAC wouldn’t run as smoothly without her. In addition to that, she is the coordinator of all the Board of Governors meetings, committee meetings and is the keeper of minutes and records. She’s our resident bylaw expert and keeps us all straightened out. Gena is in her ninth year; I’m entering my 10th, and she’s been a huge part of our team. Hats off to Gena! Thank you for all you do. Don’t forget that this month is your last chance to receive a $500 Club Card when you refer a new Member to the Club! This program has been hugely successful, but all good things must come to an end, and this program has run its course. But if you want to get in on this program, now is the time to do it. See below for details on how to receive your Platinum Bonus Card as we wind this down! See you at the Club!

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Secure Your PA R T N E R S H I P S TAT U S The Platinum Partnership has been a recruitment tool for the Club since its inception approximately 10 years ago, and it has added a great boost to Club Members referring their friends and colleagues over the years. One side-effect of this program has been the negative effects of losing a Platinum Partner who resigns or takes a leave from the Club. This negative aspect has especially come to light during the pandemic and unfortunate lockdown of the MAC facilities. In an effort to make the Platinum Partnership program an entirely positive experience, the Membership Committee and Board of Governors have approved the following changes to the plan. F All Members in the Platinum Partnership dues category will remain in the category even if their Partner should resign or

go on a leave from the Club. F This will remain in effect until such time as any Board of Governors could make changes to the Membership categories in the future. F To form a Platinum Partnership, any current Member of the Club must also be the new Members Proposing or Seconding Sponsor. F Now is the perfect time for any Member in the Diamond Club or À la Carte categories to recruit a Member and lock in their Platinum Partnership. HOW ARE YOUR INVESTMENTS DOING? Has the market been good to you? With the major stock market indices near their all-time highs, many charitable people are deciding to contribute appreciated securities to their favorite charities. Contributing appreciated securities to a 501(c)(3) organization enables the donor to take a tax deduction for the market value of the securities on the day the gift is made. This approach is much more favorable than selling the appreciated securities, having to pay tax on the gain, and then giving the proceeds to the charity.

PRESERVATION FOUNDATION BOARD Dean Eggerding, President Bob Frederic Troy Robertson Mark Belew Keith Phoenix Al Meitl Chris Hyams Tripp Zumwalt

The MAC Preservation Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization which is eligible to receive tax-deductible donations, including gifts of securities. Please seriously consider remembering the MAC Preservation Foundation in your giving plans for this year, especially now that the performance of the stock market has been so favorable. Your gift to the MAC Preservation Foundation will be used to preserve our historic Downtown Clubhouse so that it may continue to be enjoyed by all of us now and by your children and grandchildren. Because the MAC experience has been such a significant part of the lives of so many of our families, more and more of our members are deciding to contribute to the MAC Preservation Foundation to anchor their family’s MAC legacy and in doing so to remember their beloved family members who have gone before and made it all possible. One way to anchor your family’s legacy at the MAC is to make a tax-deductible gift to the MAC Preservation Foundation in the name of your family or in the name of a special loved one.

MAC's Military History Club Discusses the U.S. Navy SEALS

MAC Book Club to Discuss "Ask Again, Yes" by Mary Beth Keane On Aug. 12, the MAC Book Club continues its monthly meetings as Karen Segrist leads the discussion of “Ask Again, Yes” by Mary Beth Keane. In this book, Francis Gleeson and Brian Stanhope, rookie NYPD cops, are neighbors in the suburbs. What happens behind closed doors in both houses—the loneliness of Francis’ wife, Lena, and the instability of Brian’s wife, Anne, sets the stage for the explosive events to come. In Mary Beth Keane's extraordinary novel, a lifelong friendship and love blossoms between Kate Gleeson and Peter Stanhope, born six months apart. One shocking night their loyalties are divided, and their bond will be tested again and again over the next thirty years. Heartbreaking and redemptive, “Ask Again, Yes” is a gorgeous and generous portrait of the daily intimacies of marriage and the power of forgiveness. The Book Club meets at 5:30 p.m. on the second Thursday of the month at the West Clubhouse. Start reading now and contact Genie McKee at evmckee@gmail.com for more information, reservations or to be placed on our mailing list.

of our Members, despite the pandemic, the project was completed in the fall of 2020. Since then, philanthropy at the Club has been looking toward the next project to fund downtown with hopes to benefit not only the Members but the City of St. Louis as well.

PHILANTHROPY AT THE CLUB The MAC's two Foundations, Preservation Foundation and Sports Foundation, fulfill their missions impacting not only at the Club but in the St. Louis community as well. Some of the projects that are on the horizon: hotel room restorations including infrastructure modifications, ladies locker room re-haul and Jack Buck Grille renovation. While not all Preservation Foundation dollars can fund these projects, several infrastructure modifications qualify. The Philanthropy Office at the Club is thrilled to help move these projects forward. There are several ways to support the two foundations at the Club. August is our annual Foundations' Month. For six years, the Club has been memorializing Foundations' Month with signage over the Club, our annual golf tournament and, of course, the green chit. Give to the Foundations throughout August by adding a donation on your chit. In addition, the MAC's raffling off a chance to win an MDX Acura. Buy a raffle ticket online by navigating to Foundations > Donate on the website or buy a ticket by checking the box on your chit. My test lasted less than 10 minutes. I learned a lot of valuable information in regards to my cardio training. I burn 100% of my calories from fat when my heart rate stays between 118-126 BPM and burn 8.9 calories per min. I was shocked. I also learned that I reach an anaerobic threshold at 167 BPM. Paul explained to me that this is when I stop burning carbohydrates (stored sugars) for energy. I burn more calories per minute (22.9) at 176 BPM but 0% from fat. I can train at a lower/less stressful level and achieve the results I am looking for! ” — Colin Tully

BAKING MEMORIES with Icing Smiles

Who knew giving back could be so delicious? Through their partnership with Icing Smiles, the MAC's catering team has been on a mission to create decadent cakes for families of children with critical illnesses. They believe that each birthday is a large milestone for the children, so the parents choose the flavor and theme, and the MAC team can get as creative as they wanted. This marble cake with vanilla buttercream frosting was created for a little boy celebrating his first birthday. In order to make this extra special, our pastry team created an Elmo smash cake as well! "I was really excited to be able to participate in this charity because I was able to do something I love and help someone at the same time. I really agree with the mission statement of icing smiles and just wanted to help make this little guy's birthday as special as possible," said Katherine Acker, MAC pastry chef. F

AROUND THE CLUB

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: Rich Eveld CD: Tell the MAC about yourself. RE: Born and raised in Saint Louis. I am a golfer , part-time rancher and a huge sports fan. CD: What activities are you involved in at the Club? RE: I am presently using the facilities for working out and social activities. CD: What are your favorite Club events? RE: My favorite Club events are the boxing nights, the rooftop parties, and holiday get-togethers. CD: Do you have any favorite memories at the Club? RE: My favorite memories are Monday evenings at the Jack Buck Grille with the friends I have made at the Club. CD: How long have you been a Member of the Club? RE: I have been a member for about eight years. CD: Why did you join the MAC? RE: I joined the MAC because of the friendships and convenience that the Club has to offer. Ever since joining I have felt welcome. The staff and personnel always go above and beyond in their duties and friendships. CD: Tell us a bit about Prevent Sprain Socks and your position within the company. RE: Just as it says on my business card, I am the Emperor of Midwest Health Consultants (MHC). For decades, MHC has developed safety programs in hospitals to ensure the safety of caregivers, staff and patients. Our programs have lowered the accident and injury rates in hospitals by 95%. We felt we had the right formula and knowledge to bring this new product, Prevent Sprain Socks, to the United States. With our hospital background and personal experience with sports and multiple interviews with physical therapists, athletic directors, and coaches we determined that athletic gear was lacking when it came to the ankles until now. Prevent Sprain Socks were engineered and

28 F CHERRY DIAMOND

designed by medical professionals due to the countless debilitating ankle injuries that happen every day. In Europe, this technology has been used for the past few years in both professional and recreational sports as well as in the military. Prevent Sprain Socks have built-in tension straps to support and stabilize the ankle as well as many other benefits. CD: Did you found the company? RE: Three decades ago, I started Midwest Health Consultants with my company’s motto being: Cost Savings Through Safety. CD: How do Prevent Sprain Socks measure up against other socks? RE: We have been asked numerous times about our socks compared to other athletic socks. Almost all traditional athletic socks are considered part of a uniform. Our socks on the other hand are considered safety equipment. This is comparable to a baseball cap and a batting helmet. A baseball cap is part of the uniform, but the batting helmet is safety equipment. Prevent Sprain Socks are the evolution of ankle protection. The new standard of ankle support in sports in the future will be this sock. CD: Why are our socks good for MAC Members and their families? RE: Unfortunately, none of us are getting paid to play sports. You think your job is aggravating – try it on crutches! Whether you are playing tennis, racketball, handball, exercising, or etc. ankle protection is extremely important to keep you on your feet. I always say…Safety doesn’t cost it pays. CD: Why are you passionate about your product? RE: Growing up many times we had to play with inadequate sports equipment. For example, in high school, my football thigh pads were Reader’s Digest Magazines. It saddens me to see young athletes of any age on the sidelines because of an injury that could have been prevented. CD: What’s your experience been here? RE: When I call the corporate office (me) to complain about me, to fire me, I realize all I’ve got is me. F

Jackson MilleR IS Born to Run Jackson Miller has been running toward success for years – and he’s only 12. Jackson, the son of MAC Members Katie and Josh Miller, started running track and field when he was young and got serious about it in fourth grade. He just finished sixth grade and recently qualified for the National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships, which took place the last week of July on the University of North Florida campus in Jacksonville. The speedy preteen was the Amateur Athletic Association Ozark District Champion in three events: the 400-meter dash, the 800-meter run and the 1,500-meter run. Jackson qualified for the Junior Olympic Championships by besting his peers in several meets before making it to the regional qualifiers, where he qualified for the national event. Proud dad Josh noted that Jackson was unbeaten in all three events all year. “It’s a competitive process,” Josh said. “We’re biased parents, but for a kid to qualify in any event is a pretty significant deal. For him to win all three (regional qualifiers) in the same year… it doesn’t happen very often.”

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic hampered schools’ and clubs’ abilities to host track meets, but the Miller family stayed in shape by playing soccer, running and biking. They’re an active bunch with an athletic background: Josh ran track in college, and Katie, who’s played tennis her whole life, won the singles championship at the MAC three years ago. “We just want him to be successful and find something he has passion in,” Josh said. “He’s also pretty much a straight-A student and played soccer with the St. Louis Scott Gallagher Soccer Club.” Katie echoed that sentiment, saying that she just wants the best for Jackson. “He puts a lot of pressure on himself like most successful people in any arena. I get nervous as a mom because I just want him to do well, but we don’t put a lot of pressure on him,” she said. “I just want him to be happy (running).” F Editor’s note: Though results were not available at the time this printed issue of the Cherry Diamond went to press, check our social media channels to find out how Jackson did!
