from the president The spring equinox falls on Thursday, March 19. This event marks the astronomical first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. It is also the start of the winter season for five board members who have been engaged in leadership roles for the past three years: Mark Brandom, John Pennington, Tracy Beckette, Tim Malyszko and myself. It has been a truly enjoyable time to help set the direction of the Club. I feel we came in when the Club was on a big upswing, and we have been able to stay the course. I mention the above because our annual Board of Governors Election is on May 7. We have made great strides to enhance this event. Electronic voting is now available, but it is not a substitute for this very unique tradition. Past President McCarthy’s column mentioned that our members get to experience MAC democracy in action. The Board has worked hard to make sure our next elected Board of Governors will be assets for the Club. The election process is a true election with winners and losers. But make no mistake that all the qualified people who put their names up for election are winners and are committed to making the MAC the best it can be. If you have not experienced election day downtown, please put this on your calendar. Members voted this past year to make all married couples equal. Maybe your significant other has heard about the election but could not participate in the past because of the bylaws. YOU voted to change that. I would like to see all married couples downtown for election day. I would like to see you both walk through the “storied gauntlet” together. If you voted online, you can still attend and walk through the gauntlet. At the end of the day, we will gather in the Missouri Room and announce the 2020-2021 new Board members. One tradition that continues from the days of Past President McCarthy: fried shrimp will be in abundance, along with other food. By the time you read this article, Phase Two of the West Clubhouse fitness upgrades will be open. The redo was a direct response

to the 2017 member survey, and our goal is to continue to enhance the members’ experience. The Jack Buck Grille upgrade and a functional and professional women’s locker room at the Downtown Clubhouse are on the capital project to-do list. Staff and Board members work together to prioritize and deliver the best value that we can based on the capital resources available. Please continue to use the Club, invite friends and host business functions at your Club. It will only make us stronger and allow us to improve the member experience. I want to thank staff for all they have done while we have had construction work. I recently read an article in the Private Club Advisor where it was stressed that members should treat each other and staff like you would your family. Little things mean a lot. Let’s make sure we respect all the people at the MAC – both staff and members. A thank you here, picking up your towel and putting it in the proper basket, not leaving trash laying around and other proper decorum makes us better. Let’s continue to make the MAC the place you are proud to bring guests. The members spoke with their support of the Preservation Foundation, especially the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation, and we hit our goals. The project to restore the exterior of our beautiful Downtown facility will be rolled out soon. If you get a moment when you are downtown, walk outside and look at the Missouri Athletic Association name embedded into our building. Step back and look at the diamond designs on the top floors. Our building is the Cherry Diamond on Washington Avenue. Your support allows us to give this downtown icon a facelift. Thank you, Todd and Lauren Keske, who were the presenting partners at the Gala. Their support of the Club has provided a remarkable contribution, and they exemplify the MAC tradition of excellence. The exterior of the building will forever be a testament of their commitment. Thank you to all members who have continued to support the Club through

contributions to this campaign and other needs. The Preservation Foundation is a vital mechanism that continues to allow investments in projects and restorations all year. Our staff was outstanding in organizing the evening of dining, dancing and camaraderie. The MAC is premier, and our staff allows us to boast this without any doubt. On April 3, we will honor six women from the region at the Women of Distinction Luncheon in the Missouri Room. Please call catering to register for this program. Thank you to the Women’s Initiative Group for their work organizing this event. We had the largest number of nominees in this program’s history. On April 13, we will host the United States Basketball Writers Association College Basketball Awards. This is always a sold-out event that highlights the end of the collegiate basketball season. Thank you to the members and organizations that have supported this event through sponsorships and attendance. It has been recognized by past participants as the finest college awards program in the country. Going forward, it will only get better. I have been the chairman of this event for three years. In order for events to continue to evolve and grow, I feel leadership needs to change, and I am honored that Governor Aaron Pawlitz accepted my invitation to be this year’s vice chairman. He will take over my role going forward, and the event will only get better under his leadership. Enjoy the beginning of spring. I look forward to seeing members at one of the many reciprocal golf courses, the 1903 patio, rooftop events downtown, election day, or working out in the West’s new fitness areas. The Missouri Athletic Club is your Club.

Kevin Cantwell, President Missouri Athletic Club

Since 1903, the Missouri Athletic Club’s mission has been to be the premier athletic, dining, and social club for business, professional, and civic leaders and their families in the St. Louis region. 4 F Cherry Diamond F MAR 2020

from the general manager By the time you’re reading this, Phase Two out at the West Clubhouse will be up and running and open for our members to enjoy! We closed for the weekend on Feb. 21 and had a grand opening on Feb. 24 to celebrate the new spaces. After many months of work, we unveiled a brand-new spinning studio, new cardio spaces, functional training and group exercise rooms – just to name a few. Comments we’ve been hearing so far have been incredible, and we hope you’ve been loving the new facilities and upgrades. Remember, we will do as many classes as the members want to take, so please talk to our staff. If there’s something we’re not doing that you’d like us to do, let us know. Also, if you want some guest passes to bring some friends with you to try the new facilities out, get with Paul Helfrich and we’ll make arrangements for you to host them. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be dialing in the classes, times and styles to bring you what you want, when you want it. The schedule is fluid at this point. We’ll also be sending out a survey in a little bit, so you can let us know what you think. We just hired a new nutritionist to join us along with our current nutritionist Dave at West, so we’re starting to look at menus and food offerings and see what we can put into the snack bar that will tie in with the whole wellness aspect of the fitness center. Chef Charles, Emma, Darrin, Brian and the team out there have been working hard on bringing that to life, so keep an eye out. It’ll be nice to get back to operations and out of this construction. With summertime

coming, now’s the perfect time to bring your friends out to see the spectacular new facilities. We’ve been talking about an initiation fee increase, but we decided to push that off for a little bit. However, it will be coming at some point down the road, so now’s a great time to talk to your friends and family and get involved in our great Club before summer kicks off. Hats off to Dean Eggerding, president of the MAC’s Preservation Foundation, for all his work this year and helping us with the Robert J. Trulaske Jr. Family Foundation grant. This started with the leadership of Past President Keith Phoenix, carried on over this year by President Kevin Cantwell and culminated on Feb. 15 with the Preservation Foundation Ball. The ball was a grand party that truly was an extravaganza and allowed us to really show off everything that’s great about the MAC. We had a goal of $525,000 and are very happy to report that we surpassed that. We anticipate this project starting sometime in March and concluding five or six months later. As we develop the schedule, we’ll let you know what’s going on, but there should be very minimal inconvenience since all the work is taking place on the exterior of the building. The work to be done includes restoration of wood windows, metal rails, window lintel and sills, terra cotta, granite and limestone. Other planned work includes masonry cleaning and brick water repellent. The outside of the building has been way down the list of priorities for many years, and I didn’t think I’d ever get to see this project completed in my lifetime at the MAC. But

because of the Trulaske grant and the generous contributions of our members, we’re going to be able to complete a project I recognized needed to happen the day I walked in the door. It’ll be great to have this building shining again, and all of our members can be very proud of the history and support from folks who’ve worked so hard to bring this from possibility to reality. Now that we have this big fundraising effort and Phase Two behind us, it’s back to the drawing board for what’s next. We’ll be doing a survey as an update to our 2017 questionnaire to get your input on the road ahead and what it looks like for the next three to five years down the road. Every dollar is important to us, and we want to make sure we’re delivering programs, services and facilities that are not only going to keep you happy as our current members, but also attract members who haven’t joined yet. The Planning Committee is back in full gear as we start working on our agenda for next year and all the projects coming up. If you have any suggestions or thoughts, feel free to shoot an email to me or anybody on the Planning Committee. We always enjoy hearing member input and comments on the Club and where money can and should go in the future.

Wally Smith, General Manager Missouri Athletic Club

Leaving a Legacy

AFTER

Do You Have a Will? An Estate Plan? Amazingly, more than 50 percent of adults in the United States do not have a will or an estate plan, and many wills and estate plans have not been updated in many years. Writing wills and estate plans and updating them takes time and can be expensive, but one easy and inexpensive way to ensure that your heirs and favorite charities receive assets at the time of your death is through beneficiary designations. Beneficiary designations are easy to make and easy to change. In order to leave a lasting legacy here at your Club, please consider designating the MAC or one of its three foundations (Preservation, Sports and Arts) as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts (IRAs, 401ks, 403bs, etc.) or a life insurance policy.

While attendees enjoyed a memorable evening in the grand Missouri Room, the mission of the event was kept at the front of everyone’s minds. The Preservation Foundation held the ball to honor and thank donors who have contributed to the exterior restoration, and raise the remaining funds needed to begin restoring the Downtown Clubhouse exterior. During the fund-a-need portion of the evening, members showed their overwhelming dedication and support for the preservation of the beloved and historic Clubhouse, raising enough to begin the project later this spring. As the evening drew to a close, guests flooded the dance floor while the band FatPocket played upbeat tunes. A most heartfelt thank you to Presenting Partners Todd and Lauren Keske as well as the Robert J. Trulaske Family Foundation, the Stifel Foundation and all who have donated to support this effort! the Cherry Diamond were achieved by the fast basket ball team of the season of 1902-03. Under the management of Marion F. Parker, the team representing the Missouri Athletic Club went into the game with a vim, and speedily demonstrated their superiority over all the other similar organizations of the city. In the city league they took the lead early in the race, and retained it all season.” 16 F Cherry Diamond F MAR 2020

FOR

“The first honors for

LOVE of the GAME

The very first issue of the Cherry Diamond magazine, which was printed in August 1903, dedicated significant space to one of the Club’s oldest endeavors: basketball. The sport of basketball and its enthusiastic players have been a crucial part of the Club’s history since its humble beginnings nearly 120 years ago. Over the years, countless players have graced the courts of the Downtown and West Clubhouses, from Division I athletes to international players to guys who just love the game and want to spend time on the court. Today, the MAC hosts basketball open age and over 40 leagues year-round, with more than 400 players on the active Club basketball list. The season kicks off every fall, with games from September through early December. After the holidays, the winter leagues pick up in

January and go through mid-March. Assistant athletic director Rick Schneider says they currently have 122 active players, with 300 on the pick-up list. This winter’s over 40 league is made up of six teams that play on Wednesday nights, with another five teams playing Monday and Tuesday nights in the open league. “A few years ago, we switched up our leagues where instead of me, Jeff Tuhro or Scott Mattingly putting teams together, we do a draft,” Schneider said. “[The players] get so into it. We choose captains, and then it’s just like fantasy sports where we go through ‘til everyone’s off the list.” Though competition on the court can be fierce, the longstanding MAC camaraderie is never far away. Carter Alexander, one of the captains, noted that though he’s relatively

new to St. Louis, he was welcomed into the basketball leagues right away. “[The guys] compete hard, but at the end of the day we’re all friends,” he said. “We all come down to the Jack Buck Grille and have a drink, hang out and enjoy each other’s company.” Past President and captain Brent Kaniecki called the camaraderie with other basketball players “tremendous.” “We end up down in the Jack Buck Grille after [our games], which is probably the highlight of both leagues,” he said. “I’ve met some of my best friends here.” On top of their dedication to each other, MAC basketball players’ dedication to the game is steadfast, Schneider said. “They’re playing pick-up at West on Mondays and Wednesdays, pick-up Downtown Thursday and Friday, and then Saturday there’s a game at both locations,” he said. “They just love to play.” During the months of March and April, MAC basketball leagues are in the thick of their double-elimination style tournament. In the middle of that, the Club hosts its yearly basketball banquet for the players,

slated for Monday, April 6 this year. Awards will be handed out, from the goofy “worst free throw percentage” award to the rookie of the year award to the more prestigious Bill Daake award, named after a beloved

MAC basketball player who was all about sportsmanship. After the tournament wraps up in midApril, the MAC’s traveling teams hit the road. Five teams made up of more than 50 players will travel to Las Vegas for the North American Association of Club Athletic Directors Basketball Tournament later in the spring, where they’ll compete in five different divisions. For those who’ve been a part of the MAC basketball scene, every day on the court is something special. Former Governor Gerry Burns said that though he plays on three other half-court leagues, the MAC ones are his favorites. “It’s all about the camaraderie here and the quality of guys — and the quality of ball, for that matter,” he said. “I wouldn’t miss it.” Former Governor and longtime MAC basketball player Gary Sextro feels the same way. “I joined the club in 1976, so if you do the math, that’s about 43 years,” he said. “[These are] a great group of guys. We have a camaraderie that’s something special.”

SQUASH MISSOURI STATE SQUASH FINALS “B” final: Umair Iqbal v. Deena Iqbal

In the “B” finals, father Umair Iqbal took on his daughter Deena “the Smiling Assassin” Iqbal in a classic showdown. While Umair fought hard, it seemed the student had surpassed her teacher as Deena took down her father in three games.

“A”: final: Preston Amos v. Ethan Oetter

The MAC’s Amos looked to defend his title as he headed into the “A” finals. After a hard-fought first game, it looked like he might have an easy time of repeating last year’s success, however, Raquet Club (RC)’s Ethan Oetter had other plans, tying it up in the second game. Unfortunately for him, Amos returned with a vengeance, and after two-hard fought battles, he claimed the title.

Ladies final: Meg Pruett v. Deena Iqbal

MAC Crushes Junior Bronze Tournament MAC Squash Junior Team cleaned up at the St. Louis Junior Bronze Tournament, which was held at the West Clubhouse on Feb. 1. ABOVE LEFT: FROM THE BU13 CATEGORY, MAC’S WILL FRANK (FINALIST) POSES WITH RC’S GROVER GOFFSTEIN (WINNER). ABOVE RIGHT: CJ GOOT (WINNER) POSES WITH SAMEER SHAFQAT (FINALIST) BOTH FROM THE MAC. RIGHT: WILL FRANK (MAC BU13 FINALIST) POSES WITH YOUNGER BROTHER MAX FRANK (MAC BU11 WINNER).

MAC ladies’ squash standout Meg Pruett faced RC’s Deena Iqbal in a muchanticipated match. In the first game, Pruett raced to a quick lead, but Iqbal came from behind and took the lead. The second game saw another win for Iqbal. True to her nickname, Iqbal, the “Smiling Assassin,” took the third match and won the competition.

“C” final: Sameer Shafqat v. Jon Keating

MAC’s Sameer Shafqat was looking to take his first Missouri State title as he took on RC’s Jon Keating. After a close game, Keating pulled ahead for the win. In game two, Keating got an early lead, but Shafquat quickly came back. Unfortunately, Keating came back and won. The third ended in a similar fashion, and Keating won the title.

“D” final: Dan Tlapek v. Brett Siegfried

In the “D” finals, Dan Tlapek of the MAC took on Brett Siegfried, both playing in their first State Championship final. This match went the full distance, making it to five games. After a few exciting games, Siegfried took the title in the last game. Thanks to everyone for a great day of squash, and congratulations to the new Missouri State 2020 Champions.

On May 26, their team broke their previous record clocking in at 82 hours, 39 minutes and 42 seconds. Through this accomplishment, they also helped raise money for the St. Louis Children’s Hospital Oncology Department to provide treatment to help combat pediatric cancer. The Sports Foundation made a $2,500 donation to support this effort as well.

updates and renovations have been in progress in a large section of the West Clubhouse. With the exception of a couple areas, the Phase Two project has reopened to members, who’ve been enjoying brand-new,

state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in the new cardio room, group exercise rooms, spinning studio and youth classroom. The youth classroom will be home to Preschool Camp, art camps, Lego camps, little medical school camps, science camps, after school

study halls and more. Athletic director Jeff Tuhro said the youth activity room and in-house physical therapy services are still to come. In the meantime, members have a chance to try out the brand new class schedules. Tuhro recommends coming out and trying something new and experiencing all these upgrades have to offer. “We really want everyone to come out and see it in person,” he said. “We’re going to be running these class schedules for 90-120 days [from opening], then we’ll make necessary adjustments based on timing and interest.” Tuhro notes that if members are hesitant to try out new technology like AudioFetch, where they can listen to TV audio directly from their smartphone or mobile device, or the Stages Flight technology in the spinning studio to ask a staff member for help. Employees like West Clubhouse Fitness Manager Paul Helfrich and Group Class Coordinator Susan Tramelli are happy to help acclimate members to the spaces’ new features. “We’re so excited to finally get this all open,” Tuhro said. “Thank you so much for your patience and understanding while we’ve been working to improve your facilities.”

MHC MOVIE NIGHT This month, the MHC will host a movie night, featuring the 1981 film, “Das Boot.” This film depicts 1942 when the German submarine fleet is heavily engaged in the so-called “Battle of the Atlantic” to harass and destroy British shipping. With better escorts of the destroyer class, however, German U-boats have begun to take heavy losses. “Das Boot” is the story of the crew of one such U-Boat, with the film examining how these submariners maintained their professionalism as soldiers and attempted to accomplish impossible missions, all the while attempting to understand and obey the ideology of the government under which they served. Dinner will be available to attendees.

1980 Was Out of This World The setting of the Main Dining Room was superb for the celebration of love and friendship for the annual UFO Sweetheart Dance in 1980. The lights were low. Couples gathered in groups to chat with friends. The band provided not only “fever-pitch rockers,” but also lilting melodies, drawing many dancers out on the tiles for a rockin’ good time. Besides one’s partner, the center of attention throughout the night of dining and dancing was “Z,” one of the most popular bands in the St. Louis area. Jim Zimmer and his musical artists, of course, kept the dance floor filled with gyrating bodies as they belted out renditions of popular songs. When all was done, it was obvious that the night was one of total enjoyment for those who attended. Mark your calendars for the upcoming MAC Happy
