LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT can’t believe I am writing my very last Cherry Diamond article as President. It’s been an honor to serve the Missouri Athletic Club membership for the past three years on the Board of Governors and I’m especially grateful for the opportunity to lead this amazing organization this past year. Working with other outstanding leaders on the Board has been lifechanging. The Governors have led with passion and a Memberfirst focus. They have made an impact on the Club’s future, and I would like to thank each one for their dedication and selfless service to the MAC. The past year has been full of exciting events, great camaraderie and lasting memories. At our April board meeting, the Governors and I discussed this past year’s accomplishment. I’m very proud of what we have accomplished and wanted to share our list with you.

I

Focused on Member improvements: F Membership: Made positive changes in membership approach including implementing a 2500-Member cap F Events: Created a Speaker Series and successfully executed three events F Capital project: Initiated Jack Buck Grille and 1903 dining room and patio projects; West Clubhouse HVAC and Downtown Clubhouse Life safety upgrades F Amenities: Re-felted pool table; installed new tennis court curtains F Athletics: Increased racquetball leagues participation vs. previous years; upgrades to equipment in both Clubhouses F Security: Enhancements made throughout both Clubhouses Provided sound financial stewardship: F Strengthened our financial position by creating a cash reserve F Currently executing a pension plan liability elimination strategy F Evaluated Club’s Cyber Security plan Implemented quarterly board work session designed to focus on key initiatives: F Branding Strategy F Gained best practice insights by visiting Detroit Athletic Club F Created new vision and mission statements Vision: To be the foremost private club in St. Louis known for attracting exceptional people and enriching lives for generations. Mission: To create extraordinary experiences in all aspects of Club life in the spirit of excellence, service, and tradition. F Approved revisions to our Strategic Framework F Gathered feedback via a Member Satisfaction Survey to guide long term planning F Succession Planning F Successfully launched Club’s succession planning efforts F Civic Engagement F Develop strategy outlining targeted priorities to enhance Member engagement/Member experience, expand Member recruitment opportunities and increase visibility and strengthen reputation of MAC within the community F Identified and began working with key partners, including the St. Louis Metropolitan Urban League, STLYouth.com, Urban Golf of Greater St. Louis, Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, SLU Chaifetz Business School partnership, and PCs for People I hope you personally have felt the positive impact of our accomplishments. If you have, please congratulate the Governors

on a success year the next time you see them around the Club. I’d also personally like to thank the staff who have been tremendously supportive of the Board of Governors and myself this year. I’m grateful for the time I’ve been able to spend with them and thankful for what I have learned from them. I’d especially like to thank Wally Smith for his partnership this year. He and I have had a lot of fun working to gain alignment on many initiatives at the Club. I’d also like to thank Gena Willis for the patience and kindness she has show me during this past year. I tend to ask a lot of questions and she always has the answer and is willing to lend a helping hand. We are blessed to have an amazing staff at the Missouri Athletic Club and I’m grateful I’ve had the opportunity to work alongside them. May is always an exciting and important month with regards to the Governance of our Club with the election of a new class of Board of Governors. Please get to know the candidates and attend election night on May 5 at the Downtown Clubhouse. It’s a fun night and such a great Club tradition. Also on May 19, the 2022/23 Board of Governor Officers will be inducted. Many have viewed this process as a transfer of power. However, I have always viewed the process as a passing of the MAC torch, Olympic Style! (I’m sports girl, so of course I put things into sports terms!). The focus of the Board has always been to evolve our Club to meet the needs of our members. I have no doubt the 2022/23 Board of Governors, under the leadership of President-elect Brent Beumer, will continue to deliver exceptional experiences for our members. I can’t wait to see what they have in store for the members this coming year and wish them nothing but success! Member Highlight: This month, I would like to highlight those Members who have been a huge support to me during my term as President. First, I would like to thank Past President Kevin Cantwell for meeting with me years ago to encourage me to run for the Board of Governor. I value his mentorship. I’d also like to thank Past President Dan Lett for being a trusted advisor and friend. I had big shoes to fill following these two President’s and I am grateful for their willingness to show me the way. To my friends, Anna DeSaix, Pam Jordan, Becky Kingston, Emily McCartney, Jodi Peterson, and Natalie and Ryan Weber, who have been extremely understanding of my busy schedule and personally helpful in so many ways, thank you for your friendship. And last but not least, I would be remised if I did not thank my family, Jennifer and Nathan McKean, for their encouragement, unwavering support and love during my term at the MAC and throughout my life. I’m extremely blessed to have such an amazing support network and am grateful for them. Please join me in thanking these Members who have been helpful to me during my term. I am¬ a better person because of each one of them! Even though my term is coming to an end, if you see me around the Club, please continue to stop me and introduce yourself. I truly am excited for the future of the Missouri Athletic Club, proud of what the board has been able to accomplish this year and honored to tell everyone I am a Member of this exceptional Club.

Angie Minges, President Missouri Athletic Club

MAC FOUNDATIONS CORNER | Leaving a Legacy

ANCHOR YOUR FAMILY’S LEGACY AT THE MAC Membership at the MAC is a family thing. Countless Members have grown up in the Club, and their families have been enjoying Club life together at the MAC for as long as anyone can remember. Indeed, the MAC membership is one big family. Hundreds of our Members have been Members for decades. Many are second, third or even fourthgeneration Members. Membership at the MAC is a multi-generational family experience. Because the MAC experience has been such a significant part of the lives of so many of our families, more and more of our Members are deciding to remember the MAC in their estate plans. In doing so, they anchor their family’s MAC legacy and remember their beloved family members who have gone before and made it all possible. One way to anchor your family’s legacy at the MAC is to make a gift to the MAC in the name of your family or in the name of a special loved one. Another convenient way is to designate the MAC as a beneficiary on one of your retirement accounts, life insurance policy or in your will or trust. If you or your family decides to include the MAC, please let us know, so that we can welcome you as a Member of the MAC Legends Society, which is comprised of those Members who have remembered the MAC in their estate plans.

BRENT BEUMER Elected Next President of the MAC

The Missouri Athletic Club’s 15-Member Board of Governors met in January and elected Brent Beumer as the 107th President of the Club and named the four other officers for 2022-23. Tracy Beckette will serve as first vice president, Justin Fowler as second vice president, Chris Swank as secretary and Steve Albart as treasurer. Beumer has been married to his wife Ashley for 21 years and has two boys, Henry (16) and George (12). He has worked for Dierbergs Markets, Inc. for 14 years, in his current position of Vice President of Real Estate and Corporate Council for the past eight years. He enjoys spending holidays at the Club, working out and swimming at the West Clubhouse and visiting the Jack Buck Grille before Blues and Cardinals games. He is also a self-proclaimed “mediocre participant” in the over 40 basketball league and enjoys special events such as the Jack Buck Awards, Boxing Night, the Hermann Trophy Banquet and the College Basketball Awards. “I am very humbled and privileged by the opportunity to be the next President of the Club. My immediate predecessor, President Minges has set the bar very high! She is an outstanding example of what it takes to be a gracious, servant leader. When you look at the individuals who have served in the role of Club President during the MAC’s 119 years of existence, you see some of the best and brightest, business and professional minds in the history of St. Louis. It is very humbling to be included on that list. I am very fortunate to be serving alongside a very active, engaged and enthusiastic Board of Governors. I am particularly appreciative of the counsel and support of my fellow third-year governors/officers. Their wisdom, guidance and perspective has been, and will continue to be, an invaluable resource. The MAC is in a great position, and we are looking forward to doing all that we can to build upon that success,” said Beumer. F

10 YEARS AND COUNTING AT THE MAC! Recently the MAC Book Club celebrated its tenth anniversary. At the first meeting, a small group gathered to discuss “In the Garden of Beasts” by Erik Larson in April 2012. From the beginning, the co-founders, Judge Mark Neill and Dr. Genie McKee knew this book club would be different. Men and women would be reading and discussing the books, so no “chick lit!” The Book Club meets at the West Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. to discuss books during cocktail hour. After the discussion Members enjoy dinner together. The model has been maintained since the founding of the club. Spouses of Members began to join the group for dinner, and some are now participating in the book discussions! The club has grown with 16-20 members at each meeting. Before the pandemic, the Book Club took field trips to hear lectures from authors on tours, such as Ann Patchett and Daniel James Brown who wrote “The Boys in the Boat.” Of course, during the first year of the pandemic, the group met by zoom and during the summer months met outside. Learning from the lockdown experience, more and more authors are willing to visit the club via zoom. Recently, the author Elizabeth M. Norman discussed her book, “We Band of Angels,” about American nurses trapped on Bataan during WWII. A list of the 100+ books read in the last ten years is available online under Social > CWCs and Interest Groups beneath the Book Club tab. One of the first things I did after graduating from Mizzou, almost 20 years ago, was join the MAC. I am blessed to continue this legacy along with my wife Anna, giving our 4 children (all future members!) a similar upbringing at this phenomenal club. My family utilizes the club almost daily, working out or having dinners with family and friends at both locations. Owning my financial planning practice for almost 20 years, I do a lot of client entertaining, both Downtown and West. We attend the Father/Son Banquet, Jack Buck Awards, Galas, Foundations Golf Tournament, Boxing Night, Breakfast with Santa (the list goes on!) or relaxing at West’s pool. I am passionate about what this club has to offer and feel there is no better club - personally, professionally, or socially. The lifelong relationships we build at the MAC are second to none! I served as president of the Associates Group and served on the Membership Committee, bringing in numerous members. I was also active in the Basketball League and plan to make my ‘comeback’ in the upcoming tournament. I am passionate about the membership having an incredible experience both now, and in the future, and I assure you that, as a governor, I will do my best to make sure this happens. Thank you for considering me!

The MAC has always provided a safe and special opportunity to exercise, socialize, learn, relax and celebrate. Its rich history and tremendous potential to thrive is exciting. It is where I asked my father-in-law for my wife’s hand in marriage, held our rehearsal dinner and celebrated numerous birthdays and anniversaries. My service on the Charitable Society for Children and Sports Foundation has enabled me to work with many current and former Governors as well as the MAC staff to understand the inner workings of the MAC. This gives me great knowledge and insight to help lead the MAC for current members as well as future generations. It would be an honor to serve on the Board and extend my time and efforts to give back to such a wonderful place that has provided so much enrichment to myself and my family.

STATEMENT I joined the MAC during a corporate relocation from Boston and lived at the Downtown clubhouse for nearly two years – a unique experience! The warm welcome, support and fellowship I received – from members and staff alike – turned St. Louis from a temporary waypoint into my family’s adopted hometown. Eleven years have passed in a blink of an eye. Our bonds with the MAC have grown throughout - enduring friendships, professional connections, happy memories, and annual traditions - from Breakfast with Santa, Mother’s Day, and Easter Brunches to Good Fellowship Day and club elections. I serve on club committees, and use our dining facilities and reciprocal clubs frequently. I am honored to stand for election to the Board of Governors and would be privileged to serve the organization that means so much to my family and me. If elected, I would contribute broad executive leadership skills from a twenty-five-year career leading complex, high-value transactions and strategic initiatives within large corporations, and as an investment banker – skills relevant to the unique opportunities and challenges facing the MAC in our current environment. In it I have found a place of friendship and social engagement, challenge and opportunity, and health. The friendships built are for life. The social engagement provides escape from the pressures of crisis management response and complex change delivery in a global financial institution that is second largest in the US and eighth in the world. The challenge and opportunity comes from leveraging professional experience to find ways to continue to build tradition, strengthen female engagement and increase exposure to the Club and connect with our community. And of course health – our top quality facilities provide for strength training and conditioning reminiscent of my SLU basketball playing days. In addition to the other committees, it’s been an honor to chair the Women’s Initiative Group and Women of Distinction event these past several years – we strive to make it more impactful each year. UK’s Calipari Celebrates Oscar Winning the Oscar University of Arizona’s Tommy Lloyd was awarded the 2022 Henry Iba Coach of the Year winner, the same award his old boss Mark Few won in 2017. Lloyd greatly exceeded expectations in his first season as a head coach as he guided the Wildcats to a 33-4 record, swept the Pac-12 regular-season and postseason titles and led his team to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. Dawn Staley was awarded the 2022 USBWA Female Basketball Coach of the Year for the second time, after winning her first in 2020. This year, Staley led South Carolina to the national championship. Staley’s star player, Aliyah Boston won the Ann Meyers Drysdale Player of the Year Award presented to the top player in women’s college basketball. Kentucky junior forward Oscar Tshiebwe won the Oscar Robertson Trophy after averaging double-double on the season. Kentucky coach John Calipari was on-hand to talk about his star player during the banquet. Tom Ackerman, Sports Director at KMOX and a proud MAC Member, did a masterful job as emcee. He concluded the banquet program by doing a Q&A with Porter Moser, the 2022 recipient of the USBWA’s “Good Guy” Award. The University of Oklahoma head coach who just completed his first season with the Sooners, shared reflections of his historic tenure at Loyola of Chicago, as

well as the time he lived at the MAC for several months when he was first hired as an assistant coach at SLU. The strong support of the Membership and the sponsors made the event possible and the MAC looks forward to continuing to grow this event into another great annual sports banquet on the Club’s social calendar. The Beginnings of MAC SQUASH

HAPPY

Summer!

It was in 1926 when Squash was introduced to the Missouri Athletic Club by Athletic Director Bauer. Squash was played in the East but had yet to fully make its way to the Midwest. The MAC was a pioneer in introducing the sport to Club Members. Because of the quick nature of the game, Athletic Director Bauer pleaded for Members to “Keep their eye on the ball.” After the first Club championship was held just 96 years ago, Pete French took home the gold as the Club’s first squash champion. Today, squash is alive and thriving as part of the many athletic activities Members can join. F
