“Most of everything at the event is free including admission into the festival.

“Of course, items at stalls, Devonshire Teas and light refreshments will need to be purchased. Entry fees into our great Railway Museum and platform area also apply,” he said.

“We’ve been very fortunate to have the support of some very good artists as well the Golden Mount Nursery,” he said.

Andy’s generosity perpetuated in cross stitch

Originally hailing from England, Andy who has travelled throughout Europe moved to Australia in 1971. Initially landing in Sydney, Andy moved to Canberra in 1983 where he stayed until 2004 when he moved to Mount Morgan so he could care for a good friend.

As a self-taught “cross-stitcher” Andy employed all tools available to him to improve on this craftincluding using “Google”. Andy is what you would call a “tech savvy senior”.

Andy often takes a photo of something and uses a computer program to develop the patterns for cross stitching - and this is how the cross-stitched steam locomotive came about following a visit to the Mount Morgan Railway Museum.

The generosity of people always amazes and this is certainly the case when Andrew “Andy” Hurt (pictured) donated a cross-stitched version of the Hunslet Steam Locomotive to the Railway Museum. This framed work now sits proudly on the wall at the Mount Morgan Railway Station.

Andy stumbled upon cross-stitching purely by accident over 30 years ago when he was inadvertantly sent a “how to cross stitch” book by Reader’s Digest instead of the book he normally received. While this misdirected mail proved beneficial for Andy, it was to be another 10 years or so before he took up crossstitching seriously.

When you consider that Andy has Parkinson’s Disease, and that these projects take him longer than most would take, his donation is precious indeed.

“It took me about 85-90 hours to complete this piece of work,” he said.

At 14 stitches to the inch (2.5 cm) the Huslett creation has over 1600 stitches.

“The cross stitching helps me with concentration,” he said.

Andy has completed birds, flowers and animals as well as designing kits for other people to use. He also makes jewellery and hand-coloured cards. Andy likes the challenge of completing the designs and is considering doing one of the Mount Morgan Stack.

NEW MOUNT MORGAN BUSINESS USES SOUND FOR HEALING

Mount Morgan’s newest business is that of a sound healer located in Morgan Street at Shop 2, 83 Morgan Street, nestling between Bidgerdii Community Health and the Historical Museum.

Owner Tammy Wildheart trained with the Academy of Integral Sound Healing, a UK accredited school.

“They ran workshops out of Byron Bay, but the majority was done online.

“For the past two years I have spent many hours completing the theory and practical training needed to achieve my diploma,” she said. Her studies included the history of sound healing and the science of healing with natural resonance and its effects on the body.

She also had to learn many instruments including the Tibetan singing bowls, gongs, tinctures, bells, chimes, crystal singing bowls, crystal harp, kalimba, tuning forks, rain sticks, ocean drums, thunder tubes, shakers, tapping sticks, Native American flute, Shruti box, many varieties of drums including medicine drum and her voice. There are many more instruments to learn and acquire, this will be a life long journey in experimenting with sound.

So what is sound healing?

“Each of us has our own energy field, I help people tune their bio energy

fields with the help of specific instruments that resonate natural harmonic sound frequencies that directly attune to your body’s vibratory state of being,” Tammy explains.

“Eighty percent of the population suffer from stress related illness, sound healing puts the body into a deep state of relaxation, which becomes the perfect environment to induce self healing,” Tammy said.

“I describe sound healing as having a massage with sound.”

Tammy arrived in Mount Morgan over four months ago, with a dream of renovating a beautiful old Queenslander and introducing the local community to the wonders of sound healing.

“I’m happy to report not only have I started renovating a grand old Queenslander but I am honoured to have just opened Mount Morgans first sound healing studio, Wild Healing,” she said.

“To start off I will be holding three sound bath sessions a week, every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 5pm.

“A sound bath is a sound immersive experience set in a group atmosphere. While you lay back and relax. I will fill the space with natural tones and vibrations that your body will take in, truely an hour of bliss.

“I specialise in one on one sound healings and these sessions are catered to each individual and their specific areas of need.

“These sessions go from 1-2 hrs and allow me to pinpoint and address what it is you are wanting to heal or bring change to.

“I look forward to meeting and immersing myself in the local community of Mount Morgan, so far its been a wonderful experience,” she said.

You can find Wild Healing on Facebook and instagram or call to arrange a session or appointment on 0410 318 649.

Children’s Book Week is almost here! This year, Book Week runs from Saturday 19 August – Friday 25 August. The 2023 theme is Read Grow Inspire. Children’s Book Week is an initiative of the Children’s Book Council of Australia and aims to support and encourage Australian illustrators and writers. It’s a celebration of those who create and promote literature for young people, whether it be for babies, toddlers, children or teens.

There are many easy and creative ways that you and your family can celebrate Children’s Book Week.

• Visit your local library and check out the children’s section. It’s not just kid who love kids’ books! Many adults find children’s books entertaining and informative – who knows, you may find your next favourite book!

• Revisit a book that you loved as a child.

• Dress up as your favourite book character (adults can do this too!).

• Read a book on the Shortlisted Book of the Year list at https://www.cbca.org.au/shortlist-2023

Regular reading is an important part of childhood development. Through reading, children expand their vocabulary, develop their imagination, and build lifelong learning skills that will benefit them throughout their schooling years and into adulthood. That’s why the State Queensland Government/State Library of Queensland early literacy initiative is called First 5 Forever – because those first five years of life are so important in setting you up for life!

the total distance for a lap to 45 kilometres.

“The more seasoned riders mostly completed two laps,” Greg said.

“This track has large camp area, is close to town, the track length and the variation of terrain, making it ideal for this type of event,” Greg said.

Competitors travelled from far north Qld, Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales and Western Australia.

“This a great national race series that attracts the best Hard Enduro riders from all over Australia,” he said.

Greg said he was currently planning to expand the event in Mount Morgan for 2024.

More than 100 riders competed in the Grassroots Enduro Ironstone Extreme leg – the third leg of a five round Australian Hard Enduro Championship at the end of June. This is the third time the contingent of riders in this event have journeyed to Mount Morgan from around Australia to compete in the event.

While the number of riders has decreased since 2022, the competition was still hotly contested.

Event Promoter, Greg Petersen said this year’s numbers were approximately 100 less than in 2023, putting this decrease down to fuel prices and interest rates.

“These two factors are hurting people,” he said.

The event attracted about 400 crew and supporters, being a boost to businesses such as IGA, the caravan parks, eating establishments and local contractors.

The 2023 track was increased by five kilometres this year, bringing

MOUNT MORGAN BRANCH UPDATE

How different our weather has been lately, dry days, cold winds, warm sunny days, frost and now rain! Who could comprehend that we could have so many seasons in a couple of days? Well bring on spring and let us see the magnitude of colours in many gardens. Take note of the lovely display of wattle flowers in many gardens. Take note of the lovely display of wattle flowers that are in bloom. Our town has a lot to share in the area of floral blooms. Did you know that Mount Morgan has its own wattle and we are the place where many species first began to grown.

Recently the Mount Morgan Branch decided to form its own garden club. It is called the QCWA Mount Morgan Seeds and Potters Garden Club. We hope that bringing the joy of gardening into our branch will also serve as a way of bringing more ladies togethers through a common interest. This could allow ladies to find our more about gardening and meeting other ladies in the community and members of our branch. Gardening and cooking are known worldwide, and many avid enthusiasts like to meet others with the same interests. QCWA has a long history with gardening. During the war years, the members grew herbs that were dried and sent over to the soldiers to help with their dietary needs. There have also been two roses created for the QCWA. Growing your own vegetables and learning about different forms of gardening and how you can get great results will all be a part of the club. So, this will become a regular part of our craft days on the fourth Monday of each month. This can become an interesting activity to be a part of. Workshops and guest speakers will also be a part of the functions.

On 17 July we held our branch Annual General Meeting. So the executive of the branch has changed and is as follows: President – Raelene Hayes, Secretary – Mrs Arlene Roberts, Treasuer – Mrs Elizabeth Elliott, Vice-President – Colleen AndersonRoss and Vice-President – Donna Anderson. Recently our membership numbers took a small decline but now it is reaching for the stars. I am glad to say that we have four new members joining in the last month. I was happy to see Barbara Thompson presented with “Quiet Achievers” badge for all the work she has done, especially in the kitchen. I was very honoured to be awarded my 30-year badge and certificate this year.

On 31 July our branch donated trees to the Mount Morgan Central State School. In attendance were School Principal, Michelle Emery, Kirra Swain, Barbara Thompson and me (pictured right). If we can help in our community, we do and by donating trees we are helping the students to learn about the environment and to have shade in the playgrounds.

Our branch will hold a large QCWA and Country Kitchens display at the Mount Morgan Show on 12 August. There will also be displays at our yearly competitions as well as a large raffle of a wheelbarrow full of gardening products valued at over $200. Come along and say hello to the ladies and maybe buy a ticket in the raffle or one of our branch cookbooks. If you would like to become a member of our happy family, you are most welcome.

On 19 August our branch will hold a morning tea along with a guest speaker, multi-draw raffle and lucky door prizes. We hope to see many of you there so we can sort out some of the amazing ideas that have been handed in. This will start at 10 am at the Green Shed in Thompson Avenue.

Don’t forget the 18 November for the giant Cent Sale at the School of Arts so put it in your diary. We look forward to seeing you there.

Dance – Why not join us for the Medieval Dance on Saturday, 23 September to raise funds for the hall. The room will be decorated to celebrate the Spring Equinox, there will be prizes for best themed outfit, and a Lucky Door prize, as well as raffle. Thankyou to Pirruwani Art for the donation of a painting as the major prize, and Alli’s Massage for contributing a hot stone massage voucher. We have some amazing businesses in our town, and we are constantly in awe and so grateful for their generosity and support for what we are doing.

Morgan Citizens Club, with a number of projects at the install stage. We are proud to have revealed some pretty shmick stainless benchtops installed recently by Adnought to bring the Soldiers Rooms kitchen to commercial standard. With many thanks to the FRRR Strengthening Rural Communities Grants and NAB Foundation for contributing the funds required.

Many thanks also to Mount Morgan Mens Shed who through utilizing their skills, have considerably changed the appearance of the Hall, by dressing up the front stairs and bringing back some of the old world charm Mount Morgan is famous for. Keep an eye out for the rest of the fretwork which will be returned over coming months.

Our schedule all booked in over coming months, involves the wings of the dancefloor being sanded and varnished to marry in seamlessly with the main hall area, commercial lino being installed into the kitchen, servery and bathrooms, a solar spotlight for our flagpole and a reroof in October. Exciting Times!

Arts Precinct Update.

River Festival - If you attended the Rocky River Festival, you may have heard the tinkle of the ivory, had a play yourself, or just admired the beautiful piano located outside of the Rockhampton Museum Of Art. You may be surprised to learn that it hails from the Upper Dee Hall, next to St Enoch’s, and has been tuned and restored especially for the festival, by Rockhampton Regional Council. We extend many thanks to RRC for taking such great care of this significant piece of our history, and look forward to welcoming back this artefact into the realm of the Arts Precinct once the buildings are up to standard.

Renovations - Currently at St Enoch’s, windows are being measured up and a number of tasks are being performed, however with the busy schedule at the Soldiers Rooms, things are progressing at a steady pace. Volunteers are always welcome to join us, as with all small town groups, it is a struggle to share the load among Members without over burdening.

Next Meeting: 27 August at 10:30am at the Soldiers Rooms, come along for a cuppa and a chat, and see what we do. Enquiries Ph 0411 865 621. Hall Bookings Ph 0419 605 662.
