TWO JEWELS & TWENTY MEN OF ALPHA OUR CHAPTER

Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.

CHAPTER LEGACY

There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.

FIRST OFFICERS

The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold Stratton-President, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor Daly-Secretary, Brother Daniel W. Edmonds-Treasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

The President’s Message Greetings Brothers,

While I was looking ahead to what would be the content of the June 2022 President’s Message I thought it would be primarily about the accomplishment of having Alpha Phi Alpha Way being a reality. Sharing the joy of this achievement with the Brothers, expressions of elation and acknowledgment of the Brothers who made this happen, thanking again the Brothers who organized and executed the very nice street naming event on May 14, 2022. As we all now know while we were celebrating our achievement an horrific act of racial terrorism was committed against our people in Buffalo, NY. While we were slapping each other on the back there were people running for their lives and dying just for being Black and for being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Wrong place wrong time – what an interesting saying. Actually no, they were not in the wrong place at the wrong time. They were living their lives going to the store there was nothing wrong about the place and nothing wrong about the time. There was something very wrong with the terrorist and his ilk. This mass lynching by one person who lived by the code of old fashion white supremacy and it’s bastard child ideology of replacement theory is another smack in the face reminder that there is a long way to go to make this country and far too many of its citizens to live up to its ideals. Could he be mentally ill? Yes. So what. What his brain was fed from birth till now is the same garbage ideology white supremacists and their sympathizers, (conscious and unconscious), have been pushing for years and what happened on May 14, 2022 is another vivid example of what manifested as obvious violence and terrorism. But do not be mistaken that violence against us does not come from just the end of a knife, a fist or a gun. So while we back slap and enjoy our collective achievement as we should. We also know and need to stay on point with our mission: “Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. develops leaders, promotes brotherhood and academic excellence, while providing service and advocacy for our communities.” Fraternally, Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. The Vice President’s Message A Weathered Storm,

The sun has come out and the 2022 summer is within sight. The rainfall has brought new life into Washington D.C. The last two years have brought us many memories, trials, and huge triumphs. Together, we have weathered the storms of this journey. From Pandemic to Progress, I am happy to address this body and our supporters as another fraternal year comes to an end. It is more important though that I truly thank every brother of this chapter, who continued to stick it out through this year’s storms, to be the beacon of light to the world we serve in ALPHA’s honor. The last two weeks have been trying though. As we see a summer radiance peering through, a dark gray cloud of America’s missteps covers our hope. Mass murders and shootings are now a common occurrence in the conversations of our day and the targeting of minorities, the elderly, and minors, create a new level of upset for us as a community. It is numbing to think that black and brown persons are being gunned down while praying, eating, driving, shopping and now in the safety of schools. With gun laws at the top of debate in the political sphere, I ask what are we going to do to shelter ourselves from this tyrant rain? How do we feel safe in spaces like our Fraternity house, or our social events where 10 or more are gathered and we check the boxes of the common targets for these societal ills... We must consider this risk, as it is real. Onward & Upward The gloominess is only temporary though. As a people we have marched forward to find great hope and solutions to better the paths for our future generations. We are a battle tested and resilient people. As our forefathers have fought, we will continue to fight for the equal rights and opportunities that balance the tipping scales of economics and justice domestically and abroad. We are charged to never take backward steps as ALPHA delights in progress! We are approximately 488 days away from our centennial celebration and I truly look forward to the unfolding plans and pleasantries of celebrating this milestone. As a chapter, we have to continue to lead the way for our brothers and neighbors, as a fraternity we must continue to pave the way for ALL MANKIND! I hope to see you all in October, decked to the nine! I would like to take this point of personal privilege, to continue to thank every member of this chapter who have shown their support of Brother Wilson and I, electing us to serve for a third term together. Under his leadership and guidance, we have revived fraternal spirit in the midst of the pandemic, discovered solutions to host successful online meetings, carry on the business of our chapter, and continue to grow through service in Washington D.C. As the world slowly develops standards for new normals, I look forward to where we go as a chapter. Stronger Together. Brothers, I wish you all a happy summer break! See you in September. Speech “The Significance of Alpha Phi Alpha Way”

Delivered by Bro. Byron L. Williams on behalf of the Alpha Phi Alpha Way Committee Fri, 05.14.2022 *Weather: overcast with light showers My name is Byron L. Williams and I have to say… What a day to be part of history! What a day to be an Alpha for “There goes a man whose life is spent in service, not in scorn. There goes a man whose majesty shines like a Maytime morn” Let’s pretend that this morning was bright as the sun.

This street sign is symbolic in its designation so First Street still remains as the primary name BUT symbols carry meaning worth remembering, worth learning, worth passing down. They mean recognition. They mean legacy. 1. Carter G. Woodson Memorial on Rhode Island and Q Street Northwest, the Father of Black History 2. The Juneteenth flag with its bursting star signifying the end of de jure enslavement of people of African descent 3. MLK for our Brother Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. 4. CCJKMOT for our Fraternity’s founders Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Verntner Woodson Tandy 5. One Nine Oh Six (1906) for the year we were officially established and 6. A PHI A In nineteen oh seven (1907) Frances deSales Smith, a civil engineer became the first Black homeowner at 2206 First Street NW here in Bloomingdale but soon thereafter would be sued to remove him from his home by the residents of the community at that time. That led to restrictive, legally binding covenants being enacted by the 1920s to exclude Black buyers from purchasing homes in Bloomingdale.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Prolific attorney, brother of Alpha Phi Alpha, and founding member of our Mu Lambda chapter, Charles Hamilton Houston represented Black families in several Bloomingdale housing discriminiation cases throughout the 1940s including Black homeowners James and Mary Hurd. The Hurds challenged the covenants with the fervent legal representation of Brother Houston and Brother Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, and held that the enforcement of those covenants violated the 14th amendment of our Constitution which “grants equal and civil legal rights to African Americans and enslaved people”. The Hurds lived near this intersection, still on First Street

Brother Senator Edward Brooke, son of Washington, an ardent State’s Attorney General, and at one time a resident here on First Street championed causes related to low-income housing. He co-authored the 1968 Fair Housing Act.

Alpha has been present in this community since at least the 1920s through our local activism that translated into actionable housing policy that reverberated across our nation and now affects millions of people.

The reality of Washington now having an Alpha Phi Alpha Way means so much to us as 6 local chapters and to us as a historic and community-oriented fraternity with over two hundred thousand (200,000) members here and abroad. This milestone also means Blommingdale sees the value of our consistent work with our neighbors.

The fruition of Alpha Phi Alpha Way has truly been a collaborative effort of our Brothers, our Ward 5 ANC, of our Bloomingdale Civic Association, our DC City Council, and our Mayor.

Alpha Phi Alpha Way is a symbol of what we have accomplished up to this point and the many more moments and memories in service to come with our community members. —- END —-

Message from the Social Committee

To The Social Committee... Thank you, brothers, for an excellent fraternal year. The goal of the Social Committee this year was a return to normalcy, an endeavor that was executed in excellence. With the spread of a global pandemic, opportunities to mix, mingle and meet were brought to a screeching halt. As the District began to slowly open up, we successfully held numerous in-person events for Brothers, community members, and the public at large to enjoy. Beginning with our Bomb Fire Brotherhood Smoke to our Founders Day Card Party and even a Happy Hour to celebrate the coming of Spring as well as welcome our new Brothers to the House of Alpha. The brothers of the Social Committee were even instrumental in planning and executing the program for the Alpha Phi Alpha Way Street naming with a reception spearheaded by the Hospitality Committee. I would like to take the time to extend gratitude for your efforts and flexibility in getting it done! To Brothers: Joseph Housey III, Jeremy Triplett, Anthony Covington Sr., and Justice Brown-Duso; thank you for extending the hand a brotherhood through your contributions of time, money, dialogue, and sweat equity that made it all possible. You are truly world-class brothers

Bro. Thomas Pierre beautifully sang the Negro National Anthem – Life Every Voice and Sing and the program continued with welcoming remarks from Mu Lambda Chapter President Bro. John “Tony” Wilson and national officer and Director for Membership Services, Bro. Denny Johnson. Bro. Byron L. Williams provided attendees with the significance of Alpha Phi Alpha Way, while the unveiling was accomplished by Past ERVP and Past Chapter President, Bro. LeRoy Lowery. The program ended with remarks from Ward 5 ANC representatives and Councilman Keyan McDuffie. A Reception was held in the Mu Lambda Community House to cap off the event of the day. Special thanks to Bro. Everett Lott and the Alpha Phi Alpha Way committee Bros. Autin Cooper Jr., Gibert Douglass, Rylan Harris, Rudes McGann, Eddie Neal, and Byron L. Williams, for their tireless efforts in seeing this endeavor to fruition and to the collaborative efforts of the Hospitality, Program, and Social Committees. This event signifies a return to excellence in civic engagement, activism, and community partnership from Alpha Phi Alpha, Inc. (Mu Lambda Chapter). Way to go brothers, job well done! Brother Karl Bruce Social Committee and Program Committee Chair

Come on out to our last Social Event of the Fraternal Year! This will mark our First Annual Juneteenth Carnival Style Cookout Featuring Barbeque, Snow Cones, Popcorn, Cotton Candy, Cornhole, Card and Board games, 50/50 Raffle Cash App Raffle, Music, and prizes. The night will end with a fountain fire works dispay to celebrate our very own Black Independence Day! What a day to be an Alpha – The Alpha Phi Alpha Way Street Naming. On Saturday May 14, 2022 Alpha Phi Alpha Way became a reality. A street naming event was held in honor of the naming of First Street NW Alpha Phi Alpha Way. The event was attended by brothers from around the DMV area as well as representatives from the District City Council, community members, and supporters. A spirited program began with a Welcome from our Chapter Vice President Bro. Mikael LaRoche and an opening prayer from Pastor Bro. Lloyd McGriff. MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

HOUSE OF RUTH SALON DAY

The staff at the House of Ruth send their sincere gratitude to the brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter for sponsoring the “Let’s Get Beautified” event. The event was supported solely through donations from the brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter and has not gone unnoticed. Seteria Hollinshed, Program Manager – Single Site Based Programs, states “Thank you once again for taking care of my ladies on Tuesday and Wednesday!” An African American female owned business, Unique Looks, located at 2323 Shadyside Road in Suitland, Maryland, provided the services. Brothers, you may not realize the measure of the task that you have accomplished. Please take a moment and speak with any person in your circle that frequents a hair salon and they will share with you the magnitude of your accomplishment and contribution to the women.

(natural); loc maintenance and style; press and curl; natural cornrows; feed-ins; short haircut; or jumbo braids (including the hair). The ladies were transported in a 12 passenger chartered van each day. They were picked up at 9 am for their day at the salon and transported back at 2 pm. Mu Lambda Chapter purchased lunch both days from Mu Lambda Chapter, Brother Malcolm Carter’s Branch Avenue location. The salon owner’s husband allowed use of a separate banquet area where the ladies were served pizza and beverages at the conclusion of their styling. To protect the identity of the ladies, all photographs of the ladies have been blurred. A few of the ladies also provided quotes about their experience. “When you look good, you feel good.” “This is a real self-esteem builder for us.” “I remember the men of Alpha Phi Alpha. I still have the nice robe the men gave us.” “I remember the men cooking for us and bringing us fresh flowers.” “Please tell the Alphas that we really appreciate them.” The ladies are looking forward to our meal service in June. Keep up the good work. By Brother Eddie Neal

Unique Looks’ manager, Latoya Burch, set aside two days (Tuesday, May 17th and Wednesday, May 18th) to service approximately 25 women from the House of Ruth. Thanks to your donations, the salon was dedicated to the ladies for a private fourhour session each day. The staff at Unique Looks rolled out the red carpet for the ladies. They treated them with dignity and respect. It was truly a vibe of a village coming together to service the ladies. To make it affordable, the salon cut its prices in the spirit of community service. All services included washing and blow drying. The ladies were able to select from seven proposed hair styles: two strand twist MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

First Black fraternity to build monument at its birthplace

The members of Alpha Phi Alpha who made a pilgrimage to Cornell, along with community members, on Nov. 19, 2005 in Sage Chapel. By Krishna Ramanujan | May 5, 2022 Source: https://news.cornell.edu/stories/2022/05/firstblack-fraternity-build-monument-its-birthplace

In the early 1900s, Cornell was one of a few major universities that welcomed Black students, but social segregation of the time prohibited them from living in campus housing. Instead, Black students found lodging and community with local Black families; in a literary society formed in one of these houses, a group of students recognized that their white classmates found academic and social success by becoming fraternity members, which created support networks. This realization led seven Black Cornell students to found the nation’s first African

American fraternity, Alpha Phi Alpha, in 1906. The fraternity has since built approximately 900 chapters across the country and has championed civil rights; its illustrious alumni include Martin Luther King, Jr., W.E.B. Dubois, Duke Ellington and Thurgood Marshall. 411 E. Now, the founding chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha is celebrating the acquisition of two properties: 411 E. State St., its birthplace, which will be made into a monument; and 105 Westbourne Lane, purchased in Sept. 2021 for $1.5 million, which will become the first physical fraternity house owned by Alpha Phi Alpha in Ithaca. Used with permission, from the book, “The History of Alpha Phi Alpha A Development in College Life,” by Charles H. Wesley. Archie and Annie Singleton’s residence at 411 E. State Street in Ithaca, the meeting place of a literary society, called the Social Study Club, and birthplace of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity.

“The memorial will realize an aspiration of our founding members, who dreamed of having a monument to the beginning of Black Greek letter fraternities and sororities in Ithaca, which will hopefully center attention around the reason why we were founded when we couldn’t be members in mainstream society,” said Ernest Eric Elmore ’86, J.D. ‘89, an antitrust attorney at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington, D.C. and former president of the Alpha Chapter Alumni Association. These milestones will be celebrated at a groundbreaking and public fundraising kickoff weekend May 13-15, with a main event at 411 E. State St. on May 14 at 11 a.m. President Martha E. Pollack; Alpha Phi Alpha dignitaries, including Dr. Robert L. Harris, Jr., the fraternity’s national historian; and Ithaca Acting Mayor Laura Lewis will be among the speakers. Since its inception, Cornell’s “any person… any study” motto made it unique among U.S. universities, providing the

opportunity for a former slave, G.W. Fields, J.D. 1890, to become the first Black graduate of Cornell Law School, for example. By the early 1900s, when around 20 Black students attended Cornell, it was mandatory for white women to live in campus dorms, but Black women were not allowed. Black students could not join fraternities, though some of them worked in Greek-system houses. The fraternity idea was hatched at 421 N. Albany St, a house owned by a Black family that became a meeting place for a literary society that included both Black men and women, where they discussed topics of the day, including their contributions to and exclusions from U.S. culture. “As African Americans in the age of social segregation in the early 1900s, they felt it was important to come together and support one another and navigate Cornell and Ithaca, so a number of members of that study group wanted to become a fraternity,” Elmore said. The group was split between those who saw the benefits and those who felt that, as African Americans, they lacked connection to a Greek system. During a meeting at 411 E. State St. on Dec. 4, 1906, the seven founding members – dubbed the Seven Jewels – voted to formally found Alpha Phi Alpha.

The founding members of Alpha Phi Alpha, known as the Seven Jewels. From left: Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

With that history in mind, 411 E. State St. was donated to the fraternity in February by Frost Travis, president of Travis Hyde Properties, a development and property management firm. The old building was torn down in the late 1960s and is now an overgrown vacant lot. continued on the next page MU LAMBDA TORCH 2022

With the groundbreaking event on May 14, the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., through an affiliate nonprofit, Jewels Heritage Project, Inc., has plans to rebuild a facade in the fashion of the original house as part of a monument plaza. Freestanding walls within the plaza will feature the history and significance of the first Black intercollegiate fraternity in the U.S.; notable Alpha Phi Alpha brothers; the story of Cornell’s openness to Black students that made the fraternity’s founding possible; the intersections of the Cornell and Ithaca Black communities; and the history of the expansion of Alpha Phi Alpha and the establishment of other BlackGreek fraternities and sororities around the country. The site will serve as a key presence for fraternity brothers who make “pilgrimages” to Cornell to explore their roots, Elmore said. On May 14, the Jewels Heritage Project will launch a public fundraising campaign to raise $4 million; half of which will go towards building the monument, with the other $2 million supporting maintenance and operating expenses. The hope is to complete the construction within two years. While the fraternity would also like to acquire 421 N. Albany St., the house is not for sale. The group has hopes that the property, which is currently dilapidated, will be restored and maintained for its historical significance. The 9,000 square-foot, 15-bedroom house on Westbourne Lane in the Cornell Heights Historic District in Ithaca will serve as the first physical “House of Alpha” in Ithaca. It takes the place of a previous Alpha Phi Alpha residence at 409 Elmwood St. that was owned by Cornell University and members of the fraternity resided in from the late 1970s to the mid-1990s. A fundraising event at the new house on May 13 will begin a process of financing substantial required renovations, with plans for occupancy by fall 2024. The fraternity is currently seeking approvals from the city for

those renovations. “There are three really big events in the history of the fraternity,” said Reginald White ’83, vice president of human resources at Connecticut College, a member of the Alpha Chapter Alumni Association and a project manager for the renovation. The first two events included the fraternity’s founding and its centennial, which was celebrated in Ithaca in 2005 and 2006. “This feels to us like the third most important element,” White said. “Now, we have a physical structure representing the historical significance of our presence and connection to Cornell.” The new house and the monument promise to provide historical value not only for the local Black community, but also for upstate New York. The area is known for the Harriet Tubman House in Auburn, New York, and the St. James AME Zion Church in Ithaca, which was part of the Underground Railroad. Ithaca is also the birthplace of Alex Haley, author of “Roots” and “The Autobiography of Malcom X,” whose father was a member of Alpha Phi Alpha. “This monument will be part of a larger Ithaca Freedom Heritage Trailways,” Elmore said. “We welcome being part of that African American history and the significant cultural spots that are in Ithaca and the greater Central New York area.”

Jewel Heritage Foundation Ceremony

In true Alpha Fashion, la few weekends ago, The Jewels Heritage Foundation held our groundbreaking ceremony at 411 East State Street. We had over 120 guest in attendance including the interim mayor of Ithaca, Alpha Phi Alpha Leadership (Both past and present), the President of Cornell University and the ED of Historic Ithaca. At the very site where our fraternity began, we unveiled what will be a facade of what once stood-The mother of Alpha, Mrs. Annie and Archie Singleton’s home. In addition to that: the names of notable alphas, our influence in black history and the names of the other Divine 9. This will become another stop in our pilgrimage to Ithaca . Message from the Brother’s Keeper Committee Nothing helps us build our perspective more than developing compassion for others. Compassion involves two things: intention and action. Intention simply means you remember to open your heart to others. Action is simply what you do about it. You might donate time on a regular basis to a cause near to your heart. It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed in the chaos, responsibilities and goals of life. Once overwhelmed, it’s tempting to forget about those brothers most near and dear to us. Brother’s Keeper is a service program developed with the mission of advocating and improving the quality of life for Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Brothers, their spouses, and widows who are retired, are elders, have

disabilities and are ailing. Upon identification of need, the Brother’s Keeper Program also provides assistance to mature and ailing members of its communities. Limitations caused by advanced age place demands on family members, caregivers, and the larger community to ensure that elders remain independently functional. The goal of the Brother’s Keeper Program is to promote dignity and independence among Alpha family and community members who need help in keeping their lives and homes functional. There are seven objectives to the program: • • • • • • •

Assist in maintaining living environments that are compatible with participants’ levels of functioning Assist in maintaining the upkeep of participants’ properties Assist with health care decision-making Provide companionship Provide legal services Provide transportation Ensure adequate supplies of food, water, and clothing, with special emphasis on disaster management and recovery.

QUICK BAKED FISH Link: https://www.commandcooking.com/post/quick_baked_fish

Quick Baked Fish has a simple goal: get a simple yet delicious fish dinner on the table in 30 minutes or less so you don’t have to add cooking to the stresses of your workday. It succeeds, and marvelously at that! The fish is flaky and tender, with plenty of rich butter and smoky seasonings to bring out the best of its flavors. Quick Baked Fish will impress by giving you exactly what you need when you need it most. So don’t worry, dinner’s going to be a (sea) breeze! INGREDIENTS • 1 1/4 pounds of fish fillets • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt • pepper, to taste • paprika, optional, to taste • 3 tablespoons butter, melted

DIRECTIONS • Step 1 Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. • Step 2 Grease a 7x11-inch baking dish. • Step 3 Place the fish fillets in the prepared baking dish. • Step 4 Sprinkle with seasoned salt, pepper, and paprika. • Step 5 Drizzle the fish with butter. • Step 6 Cover and bake just until the fish begins to flake easily with a fork and is cooked through at 145 degrees F, about 15-20 minutes. • Step 7 Serve. GRAHAM CRACKER CAKE INGREDIENTS: • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs • ¾ cup ground pecans • ½ cup cake flour • 2 teaspoons baking powder • ¼ teaspoon salt • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened • 1 cup packed light brown sugar • 3 egg yolks, room temperature • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1 cup milk, lukewarm • 3 egg whites, room temperature • ¼ cup white sugar • 2 tablespoons white sugar • 1 ½ cups unsalted butter, softened • ½ cup packed dark brown sugar • ½ cup heavy whipping cream • ¾ cup confectioners’ sugar • ½ cup chopped pecans

DIRECTIONS: • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and line with parchment two 9 inch

round pans. • Combine the crumbs, 1/2 cup pecans, flour, baking powder, and salt. • In a large bowl, cream the butter and the light brown sugar until fluffy. Slowly beat in the egg yolks, one at a time. Stir in the vanilla. Alternately add the milk and the crumb mixture while beating on low. • Beat the egg whites in a bowl until foamy. Add the sugar slowly, and beat to soft peaks. Fold into the crumb batter, and pour into the pans. • Bake for 25 minutes, or until a tester comes out clean. Cool in the pans on a rack about 10 minutes, then invert and cool completely. • To Make Frosting: In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the 2 tablespoon sugar until it turns golden.

Remove from heat, and add 4 tablespoons of the butter; swirl. Whisk in the dark brown sugar, and place back on the heat. Bring to a boil, stirring all the time. Add the cream, and bring back to a boil. Boil 1 minute, and remove caramel from heat • Place the confectioners’ sugar in a large bowl, and mixing on medium speed, slowly drizzle in the caramel. Beat until the bottom of the bowl is just barely warm, about 5 minutes. Add the remaining 1 1/4 cups butter, 1 tablespoon at a time. Beat until smooth, and chill frosting until ready to ice the cake. Frost the cake, and press the pecans into the sides. Brother Garrett Miller

BAY BREEZE

A close relative of both the vodka-cranberry Cape Codder and Sea Breeze—in fact, likely created in the same midcentury marketing push by Ocean Spray and the Cranberry Growers Association—this vodka cocktail (although some will tell you it can also be made with coconut-flavored rum) achieved peak popularity in the 1980s and remains a summer staple nearly a half-century later. The reason? As easy to make as it is to drink, the simple combination of vodka and cranberry and pineapple juices is as refreshing as the breeze that blows on a seaside veranda. INGREDIENTS 1 1/2 ounces vodka 3 ounces cranberry juice 1 1/2 ounces pineapple juice Garnish: lime wheel STEPS • Fill a highball glass with ice. • Add the vodka, cranberry juice and pineapple juice and stir briefly to combine • Garnish with a lime wheel. BRO. KENNETH A. And now the end is here And so I face that final curtain My friend I’ll make it clear I’ll state my case, of which I’m certain I’ve lived a life that’s full I traveled each and every highway And more, much more I did it, I did it my way Regrets, I’ve had a few But then again too few to mention I did what I had to do I saw it through without exemption I planned each charted course Each careful step along the byway And more, much, much more I did it, I did it my way Yes, there were times I’m sure you knew When I bit off more than I could chew But through it all, when there was doubt I ate it up and spit it out I faced it all and I stood tall and did it my way For what is a man, what has he got? If not himself then he has naught Not to say the things that he truly feels And not the words of someone who kneels Let the record shows I took all the blows and did it my way

Alpha

is a life long commitment

An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.

Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
