TWO JEWELS & TWENTY MEN OF ALPHA OUR CHAPTER Mu Lambda is Alpha's eleventh alumni chapter, chartered October 1, 1923, in Washington D.C. The chapter was established, in part, in response to the desire of graduate brothers, many whom were initiated into Beta Chapter at Howard University, to give aid to the undergraduate brothers and continue the work of Alpha. Chartered by 22 distingushed men of Alpha which included Jewel Nathaniel Allison Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle.
CHAPTER LEGACY There has been six members who served as the General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and two whom served as the Eastern Region Vice President. Mu Lambda is equally proud of our current brothers making their mark in the Washington D.C. community and beyond. Our chapter has many entrepreneurs, activists, political leaders, philanthropists, academicians, ministers and so much more. Our diverse brotherhood age range is between the ages of 25 and 98. We all work together to maximize the brotherhood of Alpha by following the Objective, Mission and AIMS of our Fraternity.
FIRST OFFICERS The officers elected at the first meeting were Brother Harold Stratton-President, Brother John Lowery-Vice President, Brother Victor Daly-Secretary, Brother Daniel W. Edmonds-Treasurer, and Brother Nathaniel Allison Murray (Jewel)-Chaplain. Mu Lambda was thus established and was on its way into history!

The President’s Message Greetings Brothers I wish to commend you all on a year well done despite the challenges that limited our physical interactions with each other and the wider communities we serve. This has truly been a learning experience for us all. A demonstration of the will of the human spirit, desire to serve and the bonds of Brotherhood. The limited times we were able to be together under socially distant responsible numbers and parameters the joy of the fellowship was evident and heartwarming. I am optimistic in the future as society gets back to a closer state of normalcy and with us meeting and fellowshipping with each other in higher numbers and delivering services to the communities that we will be an even more awe inspiring Fraternity. Interestingly even during a pandemic our roster of financial Brothers increased by 32% over last year. That is a testament to you all. And I again thank you for the investment of your time and treasure in Alpha Phi Alpha and the Mu Lambda Chapter in particular. Fraternally Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

The Vice President’s Message
May we all stand and continue to give ourselves and the brothers active in leadership within the. chapter a well deserved round of applause. The course of this year was nothing short of a challenge but we all stepped up to the plate to hold our magnificent chapter together. As we embark on continuity with an upcoming election, I want to publicly thank brothers for serving in their respective duties of service to the chapter. Without them, Mu Lambda would be in a different place, so because of them - I give praise. Brother Kenneth Williams, continues to diligently serve as our Editor of the Torch, Documenting In color, the monthly occurrences of the chapter listing birthdays, Alpha-versaries, Businesses within the chapter, history. A true gem, I want to continue to thank my brother for the work he selflessly does every month to showcase the value of our chapter. This is met as a tool to support our Historian, Brother Silas Woods - a young Howard Alumnus and Beta Chapter initiate - who continues to work under the watchful eye of our Archivist, Bro James Harmon, also a former chapter Historian and Archivist, his prophyte in Beta and an active Beta Advisor. Our Correspondence and Communications, documenting from Chapter Meeting minutes to messages via email, phone call or text have grown into a more efficient process and for it I continue to thank brothers such as Bros. Armstrong, Bro. Jefferson for ensuring brothers receive information in a timely fashion Brother Sean Perkins, his dedication to the education activity within the chapter in underserved communities, stepping up with My line brother, Karl Bruce - who has taken the bull by the horns and worked hand in hand to give a purpose to the investments we make in the field. Our internal investment is only matched with the powerhouse of a reclamation effort made by brother Kobina Yankah, as we have surpassed our goals of active and reclaimed brothers over the past 7 years to achieve one of the most well outfitted chapters in the DC area. I cannot be happier with both of their efforts. All of the respective Chairs - From Health and Wellness to 100th Anniversary! From the initiatives built to service our community through election and pandemic. Brothers Reeves and Butts have been amazing assets to this chapter. Their tireless work changes the minds of most every month as they single handedly carry information about men’s health to all who attend. Brother Miller has stepped up to continue our chapters History lesson every week with brothers signing in from across the world and region. Our Financial Team has maintained a solid grip on the inner workings of accountability for the chapter. Brothers Young, Oakes and King have worked to give our chapter more accurate account on the monies passing through the coffers, and with the sale of the property adjacent, will allow for the chapter to create new strategies for our finances in the upcoming years hopefully to allow us to bolster our scholarships, education efforts and other noteworthy moves in the DC area. The board took care of a huge financial elephant in the middle of this pandemic, and the sigh of relief can still be heard echoing down bryant st. I continue to beg for grace as brother Hawkins prayer echos through the speakers monthly for our chapter, covering us as we conduct the business of ALPHA. We cannot forget this blessing as we squabble monthly with our favorites like bro. Albert Williams or brother Lucas but we are thankful for the service and candor we share in each exchange. As I mention brother Lucas, I must extend his praise as he brought in 8 great brothers to the fold - Please continue to reach out to each of them to learn how we can get them acclimated to the inner workings of the chapter. I would lastly like to thank Bro. John “Tony” Wilson, for his continued guidance and strong leadership through this time. We have had multiple meetings, zoom calls, telephone chats, and I can say his calm demeanour and strong voice brings a character to our chapter’s presidency that allowed us to achieve more than expected. We know we have some ways to go though as the journey is everlasting. In true Alpha Spirit, as a chapter we have allowed ourselves the grace to heal from the blows of this pandemic, gained the power to build our community and brotherhood, maintained the ability to hold our families together through tough times. I know I must have missed a few names of important brothers who have stepped up over the last year, like brother DeBose, Bro Mc Neal, etc. But each brother knows that their stories are all to be told in the work they selflessly do for this chapter. I honestly love and respect each and every one of you brothers. I am proud to serve as the Vice President with these men and all the members of this chapter. I want to encourage new members to serve, learn, become a part of the inner workings of Mu Lambda to allow yourself the opportunity to create the changes you believe in. We are stronger and better together brothers. Thank you all for being a part of this College of Friendship, University of Brotherly Love, and school for the better making of MEN..... We are Mu Lambda. Fraternally, Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter MU LAMBDA TORCH 2021

Lava Rising My heart is so weary from wading in the blood of my brothers from trying to make sense of all this mayhem, from wrapping myself around the broken hearts of my sisters the decimated lives of my people, from cradling sobbing children while trying to mend their broken bones...
my soul is just so tired! I scream into my pillow every time another black man dies desolation spewing from my contorted guts... while deep down in my psyche I feel a primal throbbing a volcano percolating molten lava rising and I remember my mother’s words bad times don’t last forever one day its going to blow! Message from the Health and Wellness Committee

Greetings Brothers of Mu Lambda Chapter, I hope that you and your families are all faring well and enjoying the longer days and warmer weather ushered in by Spring 2021. I also hope that the majority of you have faith in the science and have become vaccinated against COVID19. In doing so, we will become closer to a more socially integrated life such that we can more personally commune and fellowship.

factors are involved—more research is needed to better understand the role of these factors in people with lupus. Lupus can be expensive to live with and treat. The average annual direct and indirect costs incurred by a person with lupus can exceed $21,000 annually, a higher cost per patient than those living with heart disease, bipolar disorder, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, hypertension and asthma. Lupus can be difficult to diagnose. There is NO single blood test to diagnose lupus, and its symptoms mimic those of other diseases, vary in intensity and can come and go over time. More than half of those afflicted with lupus suffered at least four years, and saw three or more doctors before obtaining a correct diagnosis of lupus. Early diagnosis is crucial to preventing long-term consequences of the disease. If you notice signs or symptoms of lupus, be sure to engage your doctor and ask questions.
This month I share with the Brotherhood information about a disease that often devastates the African-American community: systemic lupus erythematosus, or simply lupus. The Latin nomenclature given for wolf is lupus. This autoimmune disease, though more commonly affecting African-American women than men, is termed lupus because the facial rash of lupus gives the appearance of a wolf. Many may have heard of lupus, but may not fully understand how it manifests. The month of May is designated as Lupus Awareness Month and on May 21, The Lupus Foundation of America will recognize it with the “Go Purple To End Lupus” campaign by asking individuals to wear purple. The information presented below is taken from the Lupus Foundation of America website, Help Us Solve The Cruel Mystery | Lupus Foundation of America. Some facts you may not know about lupus… • •

Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that ravages different parts of the body. No two cases of lupus are alike. Common symptoms include joint pain, skin rashes, overwhelming fatigue and fevers that last for days or weeks. Most people with lupus don’t look sick. Lupus can impact any organ or tissue, from the skin or joints to the heart or kidneys. Two leading causes of serious illness and death from lupus are kidney disease and heart disease. Lupus usually develops between ages 15 and 44 and it lasts a lifetime. Lupus can strike anyone, but 90 percent of the people living with lupus are females. Men, children and teenagers develop lupus too. While people of all races and ethnicities can develop lupus, lupus occurs two to three times more frequently among African Americans, Asians, Hispanics/Latinos, Pacific Islanders and Native Americans than among Caucasians. While the causes of lupus are unknown, scientists believe hormones, genetics (heredity) and environmental

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I am a Now a Five-Year Prostate Cancer Survivor In April of 2016, I was diagnosed with prostate cancer and successfully treated. My latest checkup (April 16, 2021) confirmed that my cancer remains undetectable, and I remain cancer free. I am most grateful, and while I focus on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, I am passionate about advocating for men’s health and prostate cancer awareness. Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, except for skin cancer. In 2021, an estimated 248,530 men in the United States will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.1 I wasn’t surprised that I was among some of the most common cancer cases in the country. Knowing that I have a strong family history of prostate cancer, it was just a matter of time before I would be diagnosed. I’d been planning for 15 years for the day that I would be diagnosed. I began getting screened at age 38 after speaking with my physician, Brother Dr. Charles Franklin. He was very proactive and began my screenings so we could get a baseline of my numbers to track changes in my prostate health. Yes, I was fearful leading up to my diagnosis. Preparing for the unknown, I could not see the cancer and hopefully wouldn’t feel it. I thought that if I ever began to experience symptoms, the cancer would likely be in an advanced stage. On March 10, 2016, the day of my diagnosis, I received the call from the nurse telling me I had prostate cancer. At first, I was scared, even after the years of preparation. But then I felt calm, and a sense of relief, knowing that because I had prepared for this day, I was ready to take action. When the nurse asked me to come in for a consultation to discuss next steps, I reacted with a simple, “no, thank you.” She was taken aback by my response. I then said, “I’d like to schedule the surgery to remove my prostate.” As I reflect over the last five years, I’ve had a range of emotions. I was relieved and grateful after my successful treatment (I chose to have a radical prostatectomy, where they remove the entire prostate and any adjacent glands that may be cancerous.) During my first year, post treatment, I concentrated on establishing my new normal of living. I was optimistic that prostate cancer wouldn’t return but what would my day-to-day life be? Would the minor leaking I was experiencing go away, or would I always need a pad? How will my marital intimacy be impacted? What would be the limitation on thing I could or could not do? How was it going to be traveling on long trips? How was it going to be on my first airplane flight? These questions and emotions filled my mind, but I knew I had to be patient as it would take time to heal. Although I was in good health, I began to ask myself, how could I live better and increase my health regimen to maintain good health – eating well and exercising. After the first year, I no longer needed a pad, and I had control of all my muscles. I started Kegel exercises before surgery and have continued up until now, along with my morning core workout. I’m sure I’ll continue them for the rest of my life. During my second year, regular checkups allowed me to stay optimistic that cancer was in my rearview mirror. I continued focusing on increasing my quality of life. I was comfortable with my work-life balance and began talking about my journey to others as I’d been keeping a journal of my experiences since my surgery. MU LAMBDA TORCH 2021

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In my third year, I turned to more advocacy and decided to contribute as a co-author for the book my father began writing about his prostate cancer experiences years before I was diagnosed. “Prostate Cancer – a Family Affair” was written from a non-medical point-of-view sharing our experiences as a black family surviving two generations of prostate cancer. This was also the year that my immediate family decided to become vegetarians, eliminating the poultry and fish, and many processed foods. Additionally, my annual screenings for prostate cancer continued to indicate undetectable levels. In my fourth year, I was eager to start promoting our book (it’s a quick read) that provides information to help men ask more questions of their physician and provide insight on possible experiences based on treatment options. As we began ramping up to connect with churches, organizations, and social groups, COVID-19 stopped us in our tracks – no more in-person interactions. With the desire to still help men become more proactive with their prostate health, I connected with three other men who had the same interests, and we formed the Prostate Cancer Awareness Alliance-DMV (PCAA-DMV). The goal of the non-profit organization is to reach men with targeted messaging, primarily in the DMV region, with hopes they can stay ahead of any prostate cancer diagnosis. We focus on education, information, and knowing where they can go to get prostate cancer treatments and cancer support services within the mid-Atlantic region. Like many people, COVID allowed me to laser focus on life’s most important things, so I sought to improve my quality of life even more. This included my health & health regimens, my wife and family, and the organizations I belonged to with a strong focus to help others. The five-year survival rate indicates the percentage of people who live at least five years after cancer is found. The five-year survival rate for people with prostate cancer is 98%. The ten-year survival rate is also 98%.1 As a second-generation survivor of three generations of prostate cancer, the five-year mark is major milestone. It means that my long-term survivability is much more likely. The five-year mark for me gave me a reason to celebrate; it was like a new lease on life with April 19th being my second birthday. Today, I am overcome with joy knowing when I leave this earth, it will not be because of prostate cancer. My energy level seemed to jump when I met the milestone, and I decided to celebrate. I consider cycling to be my ‘two-wheel therapy,’ so that weekend, my goal was to ride ten miles for every year I’ve been cancer free. During this 53-mile ride, it was a great day to reflect and rejoice. My Message to You Life after any cancer treatment is about increasing your chance to survive and thrive. If you find yourself in this ‘club that no one wants membership in,’ I encourage you to change your lifestyle, concentrate on what’s important in your life, and then make a strong effort to pay it forward. Work to help other survivors see and live their lives to the fullest potential – spiritually, mentally, and physically. If you don’t know your PSA numbers or the status of your prostate health, schedule an appointment at your first opportunity – don’t wait. Take someone you love with you to the appointment. Cancer doesn’t recognize machismo, and it doesn’t discriminate.

Greetings Brothers of Alpha, I’m writing to report on the status of the Fraternity’s Jewels Heritage Project (JHP). In 2010, at the 95th General Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, the General Body of the Fraternity voted overwhelmingly to establish the Jewels Heritage Project (JHP). In addition, the General Convention authorized the mission of the JHP to “Reclaim, Restore, and Revive” two historical sites in Ithaca, New York, that were instrumental in the founding of the Fraternity: 411 E. State St. (where Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., was founded) and 421 N. Albany St. (the first meeting place of the Social Study Club). The JHP intends to accomplish the three-stage mission in two phases: first, we will build a monument at 411 E. State St. and second, we intend to acquire and restore the residence at 421 N. Albany St. Since 2010, the JHP has reached many milestones. Some examples include: • Obtaining historic landmark designation for 421 N. Albany St. • Collaborating with the City of Ithaca to compel the owner of 421 N. Albany St. to restore the exterior of the residence • Creating a design for the monument at 411 E. State St. • Engaging an engineering firm to build the monument at 411 E. State St. • Securing a pledge from the owner of 411 E. State St. to give the property to JHP for free
However, there is more to be done. In Phase I, we seek to complete the monument at 411 E. State St. in two years. We estimate that it will cost about $1.5 million to build the monument and another $2.5 million to maintain it (for a total cost of $3.6 million). Our first milestone is to raise $250,000 by the Fraternity’s 96th General Convention and 115th Anniversary Convention in Indianapolis, IN in July 2021. This money will go towards the $1.5 million required to build the monument. We will, of course, seek contributions to build the monument from other individuals and entities who support the preservation of African American history. But first, we must demonstrate our commitment. Below, we provide suggested donation amounts, but larger donations would greatly increase our ability to achieve our goal. April 1, 2021 Campaign Kick-off Alumni Brothers: $190.60 - College Brothers: $19.06 Alumni Chapters: $1,000 - College Chapters: $250 To make tax-deductible donation as a one-time payment or recurring payment online, visit: www.jewelsproject.org Or by mail: Make a check payable to the Jewels Heritage Project, Inc., and mail to: The Jewels Heritage Project, Inc. 2313 St. Paul St. Baltimore, MD 21218 We invite you to watch our video launch as well as follow us on Facebook and Instagram for updates to our campaign. St. Louis Just Elected Its First Black Female Mayor, She’s A Delta From Hampton Tishaura Jones, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a graduate of the HBCU Hampton University made history Tuesday when she was elected the first Black female mayor of St. Louis. Jones, who currently holds the position of Treasurer for city, beat Alderwoman Cara Spencer in the general election with 51.7% to Spencer’s 47.8% and will be sworn in on April 20th. “St. Louis: This is an opportunity for us to rise,” Jones said in her victory speech. “I told you when I was running that we aren’t done avoiding tough conversations. We are done ignoring the racism that has held our city and our region back.” Jones has served as a former state representative and has held the position of treasurer since 2013. As mayor she will replace incumbent Mayor Lyda Krewson. “I will not stay silent when I spot racism,” Jones said. “I will not stay silent when I spot homophobia or transphobia. I will not stay silent when I spot xenophobia. I will not stay silent when I spot religious intolerance. I will not stay silent when I spot any injustice.” According to her campaign website, Jones has a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from Hampton University and a Master’s degree in Health Administration from the Saint Louis University School of Public Health. A graduate of the Executives in State and Local Government program at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government, she has served as Vice President of Public Finance for Blaylock Robert Van, LLC, an investment banking firm, as well as adjunct faculty at the Anheuser-Busch School of Business at Harris-Stowe State University. BLACK ATTORNEY SUCCESSFULLY GETS THE N-WORD REMOVED FROM DICTIONARY by Cedric 'BIG CED' ThorntonApril 21, 2021
After gifting his niece with a dictionary, an attorney was saddened to find out that his niece no longer wanted the gift she was given. After asking her why she wanted to give it back, she referenced the definition of a word that made her feel different. When she saw the definition of the N-word and saw what it meant, she drew it to his attention. A negro or member of any dark-skinned people; a vulgar and offensive term (See Negro).” Due to that incident, he fought and succeeded in getting the publisher to remove the word from the dictionary.
dark-skinned person and you’ll find out,” Miller stated.
According to Black News, attorney Roy Miller, who lives in Macon, Georgia, succeeded in accomplishing a feat that started with the disappointment of his niece. Through his efforts, Miller was able to effectively petition a major dictionary, published by Funk & Wagnalls, to remove a racial epithet that is considered by some to be the most distasteful word you can say.
He penned a letter to Funk & Wagnall back on March 17, 1994, and stated his position on the removal of the word, and Leon L. Bram, vice president & editorial director, responded back in a letter that is dated March 31, 1994, stating that the word would be deleted from all forthcoming printings. “Mr. Miller, your niece is fortunate in having an uncle as concerned and caring as you.”
When I read the definition, I was outraged. I immediately realized that the old definition that applied the N-word to any race had changed. The change only gave a description, not a definition. It merely suggested to the reader that if you don’t know what a Nigger is, just look at a Negro or

“This definition could never apply to an innocent Black child. The term ‘nigger’ had belittled and confused my niece, causing her to question her identity. I asked myself how Funk & Wagnalls could justify in its 1993 edition that whatever vulgar and offensive things that niggers are supposedly known to do could only apply to a Negro or dark-skinned person (including an innocent Black child).”

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.
My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha
is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
