The President’s Message Greetings Brothers,
On October 1, 2021 we celebrated the 98th anniversary of the chartering of the Mu Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc in Washington DC. Our beloved Mu Lambda chapter was charted as the eleventh house of Alpha on October 1, 1923. And I thank our 22 charter members, which includes Jewel Nathaniel Allision Murray and Jewel Robert Harold Ogle, for coming together at the Beta Chapter House and making Mu Lambda a reality. It was during these Crowning Years of our dear fraternity that Mu Lambda established itself as a chapter of leadership within our fraternity and a humble servant dedicated to addressing the needs of our Washington DC community. In the beginnings of this current fraternal year we are well on our way to having another successful year of leadership within Alpha Phi Alpha, Brothers donating their treasure and time serving the communities of Washington DC, re-establishing and establishing new collaborative relationships with community based service organizations such as the NAACP and member chapters of the DCNPHC. We are also continuing to see the continued upward trend of reclamation of Brothers back to the Chapter and of Brothers who are new to the Washington DC Area or some who have been in the area for a while looking for their next Alpha home. This is a testament to what we are doing and your personal investment to bring Brothers back into the fold which is commendable. Again thank you Brothers and have a positive and progressive day, month and year. Fraternally Brother John “Tony” Wilson, President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

The Vice President’s Message FALL IN LOVE with Mu Lambda!
Summer is now officially behind us, and the work of our beloved fraternity is pressing forward. Though the pandemic is far from gone, the brothers of the chapter have begun to roll up their sleeves and commit themselves to the calling of the community. House of Ruth, Packing of Bags, Cleaning up of neighborhoods, all tie in to our commitment to be better makers of men. It is why we all love ALPHA soo much. The work is not easy and the road is not a lane, but together we make a light lift of a ton of lead. I continue to exercise my right as the Vice President to give proper charges and hold accountable the brothers of Mu Lambda. In October we will be 98 years old and heading full steam ahead into our 99th year. I want us to get there with 100 reclaimed brothers. If each active member contacts 10 brothers that they know are inactive, and give an effort to reclaim at least 2-4 of the contacted brothers, this charge will be successful. I want us to start close to home, Inactive Line Brothers, former Mu Lambda Brothers, coworkers, and neighbors. 100 brothers strong as we go toward our centennial. 100 brothers WORKING to raise the light of ALPHA high. We have the momentum right now to create generation altering changes in our community, from policy to practice - I am proud to be an active member of Mu Lambda. I encourage everyone to continue to influence and actively participate in the current work of the chapter. We need all hands on deck! I appreciate and truly love all of my brothers. I hope you continue to FALL IN LOVE with this chapter, and give All your Love, Peace & Happiness to ALPHA! #06 Brothers, and Happy October!!!! Fraternally, Brother Mikael LaRoche, Vice-President Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. Mu Lambda Chapter

In observance of the 20th Anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and in alignment with this year’s CNCS Day of Remembrance theme, Honor. Serve. Unite, Serve DC cohosted a meal pack with 9/11Day.org on Saturday, September 11, 2021. The Brothers of Mu Lambda gathered at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center on Saturday, September 11 for a Day of Service. Brothers were tasked with assembling vegan jambalaya bags and packing them into boxes. 40 bags were packed in each box. Over 20,000 meals were prepped that day. 9/11 Day is now the nation’s largest annual day of charitable engagement, officially recognized under federal law. Each 9/11, nearly 30 million Americans volunteer, donate to charities, and perform other good deeds to promote national unity and empathy, in honor of the victims of 9/11 and those who rose in service in response to the attacks. Did You Brothers Know...
Kyle Bary is an actor known for Ginny & Georgia (2021) and beauty (2021). He is currently playing the role of Quincy Dupont, the son of Morris Chestnut’s character Raymond Dupont in the new series “Our Kind of People” Tuesday nights on FOX. “Our Kind of People” takes place in the aspirational world of Oak Bluffs on Martha’s Vineyard, a historical stronghold where the wealthy and powerful Black elite have come to play for over 50 years.
Strong-willed single mom Angela Vaughn sets out to reclaim her family’s name and make an impact with her revolutionary hair care line that highlights the innate, natural beauty of Black women, but she soon discovers a dark secret about her own mother’s past that will turn her world upside-down and shake up this community forever. The show is a soapy, thrilling exploration of race and class in America and an unapologetic celebration of Black resilience and achievement.

Message from the Health and Wellness Committee Mu Lambda Health and Wellness Committee (MLHWC)
Mu Lambda Brothers, Welcome to Fall 2021! October is Health Literacy Awareness Month and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Below are two articles of interest addressing these topics. Please click on the links or cut and paste into your browser to read the entire articles. Call to Action – In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the ML HWC would Like ALL Brothers to wear something PINK during the virtual Oct. 7th chapter meeting.
Digital health divide runs deep in older racial and ethnic minorities Results of a study qualitatively exploring reasons for digital health information disparity reveal a deep digital health divide that has important implications for helping older adults with COVID-19 vaccinations. Participants who were older, less educated, economically disadvantaged and from ethnic groups (African American, Afro-Caribbean or Hispanic American) were up to five times less likely to have access to digital health information than were those who were younger, more highly educated, had a higher income, or were European Americans. For more information on Health Literacy amongst African Americans – please click the link below. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2021/02/210203090539.htm
Breast Cancer's Spread Is More Likely in Black Women, Study Finds After a diagnosis of breast cancer, Black women face a greater risk of having the disease spread to distant sites in the body — a disparity that is not readily explained, researchers say. It's known that in the United States, Black women have the highest death rates from breast cancer of any racial or ethnic group. Compared with white women, Black women are 40% more likely to die of the disease, and twice as likely if they are older than 50, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Derrick Butts dabutts@mac.com - who is filling in until one or more brothers will step-up/volunteer. Thank you for your participation and support of the MLHWC!

French Onion Baked Chicken Craving comfort food? Try this French Onion Baked Chicken for the ultimate cheesy, satisfying meal. INGREDIENTS • 3 tablespoons butter • 2 teaspoons olive oil • 4-5 large yellow or white onions, peeled and sliced in half 1/4 teaspoon black pepper • 2 sprigs of fresh thyme • 3 cloves garlic, minced • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar • 2/3 cup reduced-sodium beef broth • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 cup shredded Mozzarella or Gruyere • 1/3 cup shredded Parmesan DIRECTIONS Step 1 Heat a large skillet over medium/medium-high heat. Add the butter, olive oil, and sliced onions. Season with 1/4 teaspoon pepper. Add the thyme sprigs and cook for 8 minutes, stirring very occasionally. Step 2 While the onions are cooking, preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and butter a 9”x13” baking dish. Set it aside.
Step 3 After 8 minutes, reduce the heat on the pan of onions down to medium/medium-low, and cook them for another 15 minutes or so, stirring occasionally. Step 4 Stir in the garlic, cook for 1 minute. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and 1/3 cup of the beef broth. Stir and cook for another minute or so, until the onion mixture is thick with a jam-like consistency. Step 5 Add about a 1/2 cup of the caramelized onions to the prepared baking dish and add the remaining 1/3 cup beef broth to the dish. Stir. Step 6 Season the chicken breasts on both sides with salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and garlic powder. Arrange chicken in a prepared baking dish and top each breast with a generous spoonful of caramelized onions. Step 7 Top the chicken and onions with Mozzarella and Parmesan. Step 8 Bake for 25 minutes, or until the chicken is cooked to an internal temperature of 165 degrees F. Brother Derrick Butts

Prostate Cancer a Family Affair Many of you are aware that I am a prostate cancer survivor. I know some of you have also traveled the journey. I was diagnosed and treated in 2016 and remain cancerfree. Thankfully my doctors caught it early before it had the opportunity to spread. I was vigilant well before my diagnosis with regular checkups mainly because my dad and uncle had previously been diagnosed. As men, and as black men in particular, we tend to wait much longer than we should to see the doctor. We all know brothers who have health challenges but put off making a call to the doctor. But cancer doesn’t wait.
My dad and I share our journey in our new book, Survivors’ Stories, Prostate Cancer, A Family Affair. Get more information on our journey and purchase the book at www.derrickbutts.com and then let’s talk. Speaking Engagements – I would be more than happy to schedule time to talk with your church, Men’s/Health group, and/or organization about being proactive with your prostate health and to share my journey. Please have them email me at info@derrickbutts. com to begin the discussion. Thank you Brothers for your support! Brother Derrick Butts

Alpha
is a life long commitment
An Alpha Phi Alpha man’s attitude should not be “how much can I derive from the Fraternity” but “how much can I do for the Fraternity?” In proportion to what he does for his Chapter and for Alpha Phi Alpha will a member receive lasting benefits from the Fraternity to himself in the way of self-development by duty well done, and the respect of the Brothers well served. A member’s duties should be: 1. Prompt payment of all financial obligations, the prime requisite for successful fraternal life. 2. The doing of good scholastic work in his chosen vocation, thereby accomplishing the real end of a college course. 3. The reasonable endeavor to participate in general college activities and social service and to excel therein. 4. The proper consideration of all things with appropriate attention to the high moral standard of Alpha Phi Alpha.
Rest if you must, but don’t you quit.
