e often let past experiences dictate how we move along (or remain stagnant) in life. Past experiences are meant to be educators for us. They teach us lifelong lessons, and help guide our next moves. But that's only if you give them permission to do so. What I mean, is letting go of the things in the past that scared the heck out of you, and accepting what's to come. Our covergirl – DJ Spinderella – did just that, and because of it, has welcomed a bevy of life-changing, positive experiences. Her life is moving in a new, upward trajectory with many exciting additions – with a new f iance, residency, and upcoming TV show in the works to name a few. Her love story is a great example of what happens when you let your guard down, and allow love in. We had a chance to get up close and personal with her and her f iance, Quentin "Q" Coleman, in our interview on page 22. And that's just a taste of what to expect in the Summer Issue. Throughout these pages, you f ind the most gorgeous weddings from Capetown to Virginia. From Parisian-insired to industrial-chic, the stylized shoots in this issue provide endless inspiration for your wedding day. But remember, these ideas are just that...ideas. Your wedding day doesn't have to f it any molds or follow any traditions. Make it your own and put your own spin on it. And ultimately, remember to have fun throughout the entire process. ur luxurious shoot has many elegant [elements] from the eye-catching sweetheart table coupled with mirrored columns and soft candlelight accents to the illusion of a lovely floating floral cake. Our model bride is adorned in 4 stunning looks while the groom (not to be outdone) also changes into 3 stylish looks. Garnished with lovely headpieces with each change to the jewelry our stunning couple definitely makes a statement with each outfit change." - Sheronda Seawright

"In a sea of mundane fashion where wedding style is rudimentary and uniform, we wanted to flip the idea of love on its head and create an Avante Garde love story where freedom of expression was celebrated through silhouette and shape. Each gown was chosen with the intent to celebrate the idea of opulent infatuation and its evolution. Our bride is the same but living through four different stages of life because love changes but feels the same every time you say “I do.

"When I start the process of brainstorming for design ideas, I began with the room and colors that stand out and are more prominent without over-saturation. Drexelbrook is a hidden gem in the Philadelphia area with amazing ballrooms. The carpets served as the main inspiration for the design. Grey paired with white created the right balance while utilizing mirror accents to help bring everything together."

"There’s no question that Pat McGrath is a great inspiration to many makeup artists in the industry. Her use of vivid color and effervescent looks helped influence the makeup for this styled shoot and also prompted creativity to push the boundaries for traditional bridal makeup. A bold pink eye and blush cheek, dewy skin, and nude matte lip paired with the soft, romantic ball gown by Lillie Couture completed that whimsical look. Smokey eyes were the theme for the remaining bridal glam to bring out the ornate opulence in each dress. Intense eyes and glossy nude and bright pink lips helped tie it all together to achieve the overall look of regality and luxury."

"The hair inspirations all had individual personalities that were incorporated into the dress and makeup designs. The natural beauty is free-spirited and delicate with pearl and bling compliments. The natural beauty is simplistic with a playful charm. The long ponytail with the crown gave royal vibes for a #Queen. The ruffle dress inspired by Sex In the City which the hair complimented by a sleek bun to show off the brides gorgeous facial structure and headpiece. The sheer dress with sleeves was inspired by classic glam which has dramatic hair and remains classic for years to come in photos."

COV E R S TO R Y

interview by jacqueline nwobu

JACKIE: I KNOW YOU'VE BEEN HEAVYDUTY PLANNING RIGHT?

JACKIE: SO YOU WERE DOING SOME RESEARCH?

SPIN: Yeah. And we love it.

[LAUGHS]

JACKIE: THAT'S AWESOME.

Q: Right, a little Twitter research. And I think I inboxed [Dee Dee] on twitter or something and [she] was like...well, call me about it. So I have a whoop-de-do for my birthday every August in Dallas. And it’s an all-white party and I was like, Hey, I'm turning--- whatever I was turning---I can’t remember --- but I’m gonna do it big this year and I want to book a celebrity DJ. Would you DJ for it, I hear you’re a Leo. And she was like, ‘Alright, well call me and we’ll talk about budget.’ And so I gave her my budget. And I was like normally I spend...you know... $250 on a DJ but I’m stepping out! I'm doing it big. I got $500. Are you open? And she said ---CHIIIILE!

SPIN: The only part we don't like is when they start talking about the bills. JACKIE: I KNOW! SPIN: I mean...it has inf lated, it has inf lated. JACKIE: I KNOW IT'S EXPENSIVE! IT’S CRAZY WHAT PEOPLE ARE SPENDING OUT THERE. SPIN: Yeah it is but...I mean we try to keep a cap on what we want to spend but of course our tastes don't match that... We want cigar bars and stuff like... JACKIE: OH MY GOSH! SPIN: This is crazy, but we're having a good time. We're enjoying it so far. JACKIE: WELL, YOU HAVE TO HAVE IT THE WAY YOU WANT IT...AND IT HAS TO BE FUN. SO THAT'S WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT. HOW DID YOU AND Q MEET? Q: So I was dancing at this strip club... [WE ALL BURST OUT IN LAUGHTER] SPIN: No. I was new to Dallas. And when I got to Dallas I had gotten a call from a young lady named Tamra Goins. [She] and her partner Val were doing the Shaq comedy all-star tour. And they asked me to be a DJ on the tour [and] tour the country with them and I was just enamored by comedy. I was right there on stage with these comedians. It was so funny. I'm talking about Michael Blackson and Gary Owen, Tony Roberts, Capone, Lil Duval... it was just a great time. So one event came up here in Dallas and we were all there and Q was on the bill. Q: As a mutual friend of Tamra as well. So I knew Tamra, but I didn’t know Dee Dee. She put me and a buddy on the show to open up.

JACKIE: $500! OH MY GOSH! [EVERYONE BUSTS OUT IN LAUGHTER.] Q I don't know what her rate was. Apparently, I've never booked a celebrity DJ before. So she was like, ‘Chile, um...nah... that’s not what my fee is.’ And then she went on to say, ‘Well, I'll tell you what. I'll gift it to you.’ And I was like, well how much is that!? She was like, ‘no, I’m going to do it for you as a gift for your birthday. I love comedy and I'll come up.’ I said, you bullshitting me! And so she did my birthday party. And it was pretty cool. JACKIE: SPIN, WHY DID YOU GIFT IT TO HIM? SPIN: I did it because I love comedy and I was just DJing off the Shaq tour where we were fresh off of it, and I just wanted to stay in that element. JACKIE: OKAY

SPIN: So I happened to be there and saw him perform and then we took a picture and I was ...you know... I was like okay...you know. And somehow he got in touch with me because he was having his annual birthday party.

SPIN: And you know….he's a comedian and he's...you know...pretty revered here. And he has a lot of comedy friends. So I wanted to just stay in that element. I had been going through some things. My parents had just passed. Both of them. And I like needed comedy in my life. So that to me was like.. you know what. I'm going to do it for you. You know...you could just tip me.

Q: I found out that we were both Leos.

JACKIE: SO YOU DIDN’T DO IT

BECAUSE YOU THOUGHT THAT HE WAS KIND OF CUTE AND YOU WERE LIKE--Q: I know right. I have a whole other story! [LAUGHTER] SPIN: No, not at al!l... But I was single. And he was like you know what, how about I take you out for some coffee or something like that? Q: [Q BURSTS OUT LAUGHING.] Oh you’re not gonna tell this story like this! SPIN: [WHILE LAUGHING] I'm not f inished, hold on---these are the best stories. Look at how it ended. Anyway so of course our birthdays are around the same time. So there was another event that my girls were giving me a celebration at this club. And he just happened to be hosting it. So we wound up meeting again and he was like ‘you know can I buy you a drink bla bla bla?’ Okay sure. And he was like so ‘are we gonna actually go out for that coffee or something?’ You know. So I just had to let my guard down and let him take me out for some coffee or whatever. What's the harm in that? And I guess at that point it was like...we just enjoyed each other...and he’s fun. JACKIE: BEAUTIFUL. SPIN: That's what I was seeking in my life anyway. And really--- he kind of f illed that for me. Q: So we didn't go to have coffee, we went to the movies. SPIN: Oh! He took me to the movies. I agreed to do the coffee thing and...he didn’t drink coffee. JACKIE: HA!. COFFEE AT THE MOVIES. SPIN: He didn't drink coffee. It's so funny. JACKIE: SO YOU ASKED HER TO GO FOR COFFEE BUT YOU DON'T DRINK COFFEE? Q: Well, I didn't want to be like...let’s go out for drinks and...you know...come off as one of those guys. So I was like ...you know… coffee during the day...something safe. We got talking over the phone and I end up taking her to the movies. But check out how I did it though.

SPIN: Jesus!

LIKE EACH OTHER.

Q: So we go to the movies, and the movies are in the mall. I don’t know if she knew this or not but the mall was pretty much deserted. It was about to be closed down. But I took her there and said hey I've rented out the whole mall. So you can window shop all you want.

SPIN: You know, everyone has their ups and downs in a relationship but I must say I think that is the biggest quality of Q’s that just keeps me going. Because when you're laughing and not crying...you know.

SPIN: He said, window shop! I'm takin’ you to window shop. Q: We’re in the movie theatre...nobody in the movie theatre...I rented out the whole theatre...I don’t want your fans all in your... [EVERYONE LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY]

Q: I think that’s what really got it. It was an abandoned mall. JACKIE: WHOA! THAT WAS SMOOTH THOUGH. DID YOU KNOW IT WAS AN ABANDONED MALL, SPIN? DID YOU THINK THAT HE LIKE...BOUGHT OUT THE WHOLE MALL? [Q STARTS LAUGHING.] SPIN: Honey, I knew because I worked in that mall! [EVERYONE BURSTS OUT IN LAUGHTER]

SPIN: I was in the Radio Station that was in the mall that wound up shutting down. I worked in that mall. JACKIE: OH MY GOSH! SPIN: So I was listening to his game and letting him feel like he had some game...like he was winning something over me. And I was like yeah...ok. [And] our f irst date was at Taco Bueno…. JACKIE: WHOA!! SPIN: So I was like oh...this is a different experience for me. JACKIE: WELL HE WAS TRY ING TO KEEP IT CONSISTENT....HE WENT FROM $250 TO $500. SO...YOU KNOW... SPIN: Yes, he put it all out there for me and I was like, this is what it is. But I laughed so much and enjoyed him so much that... that's where we are to this day. Every day laughing and enjoying each other, just like that. JACKIE: RIGHT. AND IT SHOWS...IT SHOWS. WE CAN TELL JUST FROM THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU THAT YOU REALLY

JACKIE: ABSOLUTELY! ABSOLUTELY! SPIN: And he brings that joy of laughter and fun to me and even when he's going through something, he just f inds the good in a bad situation. It's very inspiring. JACKIE: Y ES. THAT'S BEAUTIFUL. SO YOU GUYS MOVE PAST THE TACO BUENO DAYS AND ALL THAT. I'M SURE THERE WERE SOME FIVE-STAR RESTAURANTS SOMEWHERE IN THERE. SPIN: Right. You already know! Now when Spin stepped in...it was a different story. Where’d I take you babe? Q: Yeah. We started going to Three Forks and Pappas Brothers Steakhouses, Nobu... JACKIE: OKAY, THERE YOU GO! Q: I was like, so what are all these stars for? It’s a lot of stars..

“Fear is of the devil” so I'm not scared. I can take a ‘No’. They tell me No all the time in business. I'm cool with it, and it ended up working out. JACKIE: THAT'S BEAUTIFUL. SO HOW LONG WERE YOU DATING BEFORE YOU KNEW YOU WANTED TO POP THE QUESTION? Q: Oh, the next day! No I’m must kidding! SPIN: Well damn! JACKIE: OOOH! Q: I think a couple of years... I think 2 years. I was like okay...I can grow old with her. Let's see if my credit score match. [laughs] But we had contracts. Well...she gave me contracts. JACKIE: WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY CONTRACTS? LIKE...YOU MEAN A CONTRACT ON PAPER? Q: Not a real contract but she was like, you got 3 months to show me who you are. And when that three months was up she was like...you got an extension of another six months. SPIN: There's another six months... so...

[LAUGHTER]

Q: I got like...4 of those.

JACKIE: THAT IS SO FUNNY! SO HERE'S ANOTHER QUESTION. Q. DURING THIS WHOLE PROCESS YOU GUYS JUST KIND OF HAPPENED TO BE IN THE SAME PLACE AND YOU HAD AN OPPORTUNITY AND WENT FOR IT. WERE YOU LOOKING TO BE IN A RELATIONSHIP?

JACKIE: DID YOU REALLY DO THAT SPIN?

Q: No. I wouldn’t say I was looking. I think as a Comedian, I thought if I could make a room laugh…[I feel like] I've got a superpower. After I’ve killed the room I can talk to anybody and I feel like I'm on anyone's level. So I think I had a little comedy courage still in me from [being on] the stage. And just went for it. SPIN: Comedy courage! JACKIE: WELL Y EAH! YOU'RE COURAGEOUS ALRIGHT! THAT WHOLE MALL SITUATION... THAT TAKES A LOT OF GUTS. Q: Way out of my league. Way out of my league...But you know...I went through some stuff as well. Through a divorce and all that and depression and my motto is

SPIN: I did. I did. It was just a... I don't know... It was just my protection mechanism to protect my heart and make sure that he was... you know... the one. [To make sure] he wasn't out for a Spinderella but he really was delighted with Dee Dee... you know. And that was a big test right there because he was dating Spinderella, and for me, I needed him to see Dee Dee... JACKIE: THAT'S RIGHT. MAKES SENSE. SPIN: So it was a learning curve right there. And he got it and he passed that test. So then there was another test. For me, I kind of set these boundaries. And the reason why is because I want to know that this is real. JACKIE: SO WAS IT BECAUSE OF PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES? SPIN: Oh yes! Previous experiences. And I just--- I feel like we all can't just free fall. Sometimes you have to really know if this person is real. And he came through a divorce...I came through a divorce. You

always think that that's it. That’s it! There's a lot of lines and standards that a person needs to meet to be with me and I create those standards because I want this to last forever. And I don't want to go anywhere else and I don't want to look at anybody else, and I don't want to be with anybody...I want to be with him. So I needed to make sure of that. JACKIE: SO HOW WHAT ARE THE QUALITIES ABOUT Q THAT ALLOWED YOU TO PUT YOUR GUARD DOWN? SPIN: He was vulnerable too. He [told] me it was important that I knew that his children were the biggest thing in his life. You know what I’m saying? And would I be able to understand that. I feel like I met my soul...my partner. Because we just both enjoy the lightness of life. JACKIE: AND IT WAS EASY. THERE WAS NO ACTING...YOU DIDN’T HAVE TO TRY, YOU COULD JUST BE YOURSELF. SPIN: No, not at all. And like I said, I came through some really tragic things not too far ago and he was kind of right there by my side. Especially when my sister passed. JACKIE: OH. WOW. SPIN: My sister was right here with us... and she passed. He was right by my side and he just was like a rock to me. He was my rock. Like my sunshine. Like every corny thing [you can think] of? JACKIE: IT'S LIKE YOU’RE SAY ING YOUR WEDDING VOWS RIGHT NOW! SPIN: There it is! All those things ...all those things and...and that was him. And then I just got a conf irmation of course from my Dad... from the other side. You know, I'm very spiritual. But I got this conf irmation that he was the one. JACKIE: HOW DID YOU GET CONFIRMATION? SPIN: And I was saying...It has to be proven Daddy. Like still...okay? I believe you, but he needs to prove it. It needs to be proven. JACKIE: SO WHAT WAS THE CONFIRMATION? SPIN: So I'm a daddy's girl. My dad passed. And of course I was broken and lost but I still could hear my dad's voice just pushing

me through and keeping me going. And sometimes when you go through tragedy like that, it becomes clearer to you and you get more clarity. It's so weird how you [feel] so numb. But the answer is so concrete. So of course, just out of the blue, I hear my dad's voice like... he's the one. Out of the blue. And I wasn't even thinking about my dad. I wasn't thinking about Q. I was thinking about something totally different. And a voice came and it was, ‘He's the one.’ And it was so conf irmed and this was years ago. JACKIE: THAT’S BEAUTIFUL YOU WANTED TO BE SOLID. YOU WANTED TO REALLY, REALLY BE SURE BECAUSE YOU FELT GOOD AND YOU JUST DIDN'T WANT YOUR HEART TO BE BROKEN ESPECIALLY AFTER THE TRAGEDY AND ALL THE LOSS WITH YOUR PARENTS AND YOUR SISTER. SPIN: Yes! JACKIE: WELL, Q...YOU, I MEAN LOOK...I GOTTA GIVE YOU A HIGH FIVE. YOU PASSED ALL THOSE TESTS AND STILL CONTINUE TO LAUGH! SO TELL ME Q, HOW DID YOU PLAN THE PROPOSAL? WHAT WAS THAT LIKE? Q: It was spontaneous to a certain point because I was thinking about doing it for probably-- after I got the ring -- probably about three to f ive months. Something like that. JACKIE: SO YOU HAD THE RING FOR ABOUT 5 MONTHS? Q: Oh yeah! I had the ring for about a year. Almost a year. JACKIE: WOW!!! Q: Yeah. Well, I wanted to pay it off. Look here, I'm a regular dude--- so we worked it out and got that out of the way. [LAUGHTER]

something. I couldn't just get up in the morning, cook breakfast and bring no ring because...it wasn’t gonna happen. So the last day of her f ilming for… SPIN: The BET Show Q: The BET show -- Ladies Night -- They end up coming to Dallas to get some more b-footage. So they came over. I did one scene. I was supposed to do another scene, but it never happened. And she had a club scene that night. So that night I called all our friends, like be at the club tonight. I’m popping the question. Her daughter wasn’t even going to come that night because she f ilmed all day. I’m like... you gotta come...She’s like why? I’m like, because I’m popping the question! So I convinced her to come, pregnant and all. And right when she got off stage, I told the producers [as] they were wrapping up [to] hold on. I'm f ixing to propose, ya’ll might want to get this. And I ended up proposing and part of the proposal ended getting shown on TV. So I got to propose on a television show and make it really sweet for her. It was really dope. JACKIE: DID YOU HAVE ANY IDEA SPIN? SPIN: Not at all. JACKIE: CAUGHT YOU OFF GUARD. SPIN: He did really good with the surprise cause I wasn’t [aware] ---he kept saying it’s coming...one day. He said when you least expect it, expect it. But you know Q has been having it on ice because he wanted it to be good and he wanted it to be the right moment. JACKIE: SO WHAT WAS NEXT? WHAT WERE THE CONVERSATIONS LIKE AS FAR AS WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO DO FOR YOUR WEDDING OR WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO GET MARRIED? HOW WAS THAT?

Q: But how I was going to do it was a process of about 3-5 months. The thing with Dee Dee is she hates surprises so it's hard even for a proposal. I gotta be able to pop the question, but she wants to know so she can get the right dress or something...

SPIN: Well we wanted to go to a destination. And we actually had planned to take our friends and then it just got to a point that it was like it'd be better here because we got a lot of friends and family here. And it was easier for us to just do it here.

JACKIE: OH MY GOSH

Q: That house did it!

Q: So, I had to make sure she was going to be looking her best. Whether she had a gig or she was going on a date night or

down and everything at this resort that we love. JACKIE: ARE YOU SERIOUS?! SPIN: And it was like, you know what?... JACKIE: Y EAH, THAT HOUSE...IT'S JUST SOMETHING CRAZY OUT OF THIS WORLD. WELL THAT'S GOOD. I MEAN NOW YOU CAN INVITE LIKE 500 MORE PEOPLE THAN YOU WERE PLANNING TO INVITE BEFORE. SPIN: Not at all! Absolutely not! People have been asking Q [for] an invite to the wedding. And Q’s answer is always, ‘Oh it’s sold out.’ JACKIE: YUP! IT’S SOLD OUT! GET ON THE WAITLIST. Q: We’ll be the f irst wedding with a bouncer at the door. These jacks gone try to pull up! JACKIE: THEY MIGHT! Q: If they ain't in the numbers...It’s like going to heaven. If you ain’t in the numbers...you going to need a ticket. SPIN: Or one of those armbands you get in the club! Can you imagine how silly our wedding reception is going to be with the comedy? [LAUGHTER] JACKIE: WITH YOU BEING A DJ ARE YOU GOING TO DO A LITTLE BIT OF SPINNING OR….HOW DO YOU PICK A DJ FOR YOUR WEDDING? SPIN: That was one of the biggest questions because, you know, I know a bunch of DJs and we have a lot of DJ friends just like he has a lot of comedians that are friends. Yeah...but I'm not DJing. [LAUGHTER] JACKIE: YOU WANT TO ENJOY THE DAY. Q: Even in your wedding dress? You don’t wanna spin in your wedding dress? SPIN: No darling. I don’t. I really don’t. Q: So I can say I had DJ Spinderella DJ at my wedding? SPIN: [Laughs] You wanna do a comedy scene? You wanna take the stage on your wedding? Q: Nope!

SPIN: We’re going to allow our friends to entertain us. We have a couple of friends that will probably get on for us.

RIGHT HERE.

SPIN: DJ Phreeze who is a good friend of ours is going to be the main DJ. When we f irst started dating, we would be out on the town and we would see him DJing and he would always go, “I'm going to DJ your wedding.” And so when we f irst sat down and we started to plan who's doing what and entertaining, we came up with him because he kind of somehow had some insight. [LAUGHS]

[LAUGHTER]

JACKIE: WELL, HE BASICALLY TOLD YOU. Q: [He was] speaking it into existence. JACKIE: SO HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT PICKING YOUR PLANNER? I KNOW THAT HAVING A PLANNER HAS MADE THE PROCESS MUCH SMOOTHER FOR YOU, RIGHT? Q: Last time I got married...I think her grandma did it so… JACKIE: WHEW! Q: I have a friend that does a lot of wedding things. She does lots of wedding stuff in Dallas...a lot of wedding magazines and conventions. And she recommended her [LaKisha]. SPIN: Our wedding planner Lakisha has been excellent. Like, she’s made it very easy and fun and she’s pretty much on it. JACKIE: Y EAH, SHE'S GREAT! BEING SOMEONE WHO LIKES TO HAVE CONTROL, ARE YOU LETTING HER PLAN? HOW’S THAT GOING? SPIN: I'm still in charge of it. I know what I like but I don't know the professional side of it. We make calls to her regularly about what we like and what we want. She's very easy to work with like [helping] us with the contracts for the vendors [and with] how things are typically done but we're pretty hands-on about what we love. We know what we want and she executes. JACKIE: THAT'S WONDERFUL AND THAT'S WHAT A PLANNER SHOULD DO SO THAT YOU GET TO ENJOY YOUR DAY. I'M EXCITED FOR THE TWO OF YOU. I COULD TELL JUST FROM THE PHOTO SHOOT AND THE INTERACTION BETWEEN THE TWO OF YOU THAT THIS IS REAL LOVE

Q: Yeah, she likes me.

JACKIE: Y ES, I THINK SHE LIKES YOU. I THINK SHE LIKES YOU A LITTLE BIT. SPIN: Yeah, it’s good to have that because I'm at this point in my life that I don't want to play games and I just want what it is supposed to be. But what's so funny is [that] I wasn't expecting this. Actually, you know, being in the industry [there are] a lot of celebrity women that don't have a signif icant other. I think people think that because you're this person, you're a celebrity, you're beautiful, you've got this going on, you've got money -- that you have this area locked down and a lot of women in that position do not. JACKIE: THEY DON’T. SPIN: They don't. Think about it. Cause they're very guarded or [you] just want to make sure that you choose someone that really loves you. JACKIE: ABSOLUTELY! SPIN: And I went through that. And I didn't know that I would f ind love again. I actually was like...if it happens God, then it happens. If it doesn't, I'm okay with that. I was at that point in my life. I said I'm not going to be in a desperate place. If this is what is meant to be... that I do not f ind my signif icant other...then that's what it’ll be. JACKIE: HOW HAS EVERYTHING BEEN WITH BLENDING YOUR FAMILIES? SPIN: It's been good. We're learning. It's a process because we've already gotten through this. We kind of came together a few years ago and we started to blend the family a few years ago. But yes. He's great with my daughter and he's great with our grand baby. My daughter just had a baby. JACKIE: CONGRATULATIONS .HE’S SO CUTE! SPIN: And my bonus son and my bonus daughter... They're beautiful and they're growing and they're doing well. So it’s been great.

JACKIE: THIS REALLY WONDERFUL. IT'S A BLESSING. I KNOW THERE HAS BEEN A LOT GOING ON AND, OF COURSE, EVERY BODY CAN READ ONLINE AND WATCH THE BET SHOW TO LEARN OF EVERYTHING THAT'S BEEN HAPPENING IN YOUR CAREER. IT'S ALMOST LIKE YOU'RE ON A HIGH BECAUSE YOU'RE MARRY ING THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE BUT THEN THERE COULD BE LOWS BECAUSE OF THE WHOLE SITUATION. HOW HAVE YOU BEEN DOING? SPIN: I've been good. Fortunately, we just talked about this last night...I’m on a cloud. I’m feeling blessed. I am in the middle of a court case with them. But. I'm feeling blessed and favored. I feel that despite all of that, I know what I am, I know where I've been and what I've done for our genre of music. And I'm content with that. I wouldn't have even thought about it until you brought it up. Like, it has gotten to a point where it's not even an issue in my life. I've moved past it. It's been going on for some time, but I've moved past it and I'm just enjoying the blessings that God is giving me right now. So that's what I'm focused on and that's being handled and dealt with or whatever. But I think I've gotten past the dark part. JACKIE: DEFINITELY! AND YOU HAVE SO MUCH TO BE THANKFUL AND GRATEFUL FOR. IT’S SOMETHING THAT HAPPENS AND IT MAKES YOU STRONGER, AND IT TEACHES YOU SOME LESSONS. BUT ULTIMATELY THE BIGGEST LESSON FROM IT IS THAT YOU HAVE FAVOR, YOU HAVE FAMILY, YOU HAVE LOVE, AND YOU HAVE HAPPINESS. SPIN: That’s what holds me. Q: There are a bunch of positive

distractions that keep her mind off that. She has to deal with it but as soon as she hangs up the phone or gets out [of] that email... All of this other good stuff is going on so it all works out. JACKIE: SO ANYTHING NEW HAPPENING WITH BOTH OF YOUR CAREERS? ANYTHING THAT YOU WANT TO MENTION OR TALK ABOUT THAT'S COMING UP? Q: Well for me, something just came out last night but the last 5 months a buddy of mine created a comedy tour called the ‘Ratt Packs.’ His name is D Ellis. So we’re doing this thing called the Ratt Packs of Comedy tour and we’ve got like 4 dates in Texas. And last night we just got word that we're going to open up for Cedric the Entertainer in DC in October. So that's going to be super big. Yeah. We had an investor come out to our show in Dallas. He got us on that and says he wants to see and...it might be something. And I also celebrated my 50th show. So we have a comedy series we do here called ‘We Got Next Comedy Series.’ We just did our 50th show on my 45th birthday. JACKIE: OH MY GOSH. CONGRATULATIONS! Q: Thank you very much. So we've got the longest-running comedy series here in the south. So I got to 50 shows, and that’s a pretty big and Dee Dee’s a producer on that as well now. SPIN: We’re going to keep the funny going. We're exuding it and we want everybody else to feel that fun. I know it's hard...it's really hard sometimes you know. Everyone has something going on in their lives that’s sometimes unbearable. But like I said, if you're not crying why not laugh? Instead of crying, laugh. And that's what

we want to bring. And then for me, I have two residencies going on. Two! Thank God. Yeah. I'm starting a new one here, one at Vinetti's...the place where he popped the question to me and another starting at Lava Cantina in Frisco which is a really beautiful spot, great food. It's a performance venue. A lot of artists play there. I'm excited about that. And then, I'm still traveling and DJing but I'm enjoying this part. Putting a wedding together...that's going to be a really fun day. I'm looking forward to the honeymoon! But we also have something on the horizon... I don't want to jinx it but ...we've been talked to to be one of the couples on a new show on OWN TV. OWN has a new show and they're going to be doing our premarital counseling on TV. It’s work. It’s emotional work. But I think we have a great foundation. We agreed to do this as long as we can still be together afterward. [EVERYONE LAUGHS.] SPIN: We're just going to laugh our way through it. We’ll do our best to laugh our way through it. JACKIE: CONGRATULATIONS! WE’LL DEFINITELY LOOK OUT FOR THAT AND THANKS SO MUCH Q AND SPIN FOR SHARING YOUR STORY WITH US!

NUBIA + BRIAN MALIBU, CALIFORNIA NOVEMBER 4, 2018 P H O TOG R A P H E D B Y D u k e I m a g e s

I

t could be said that Nubia and Brian’s love story is an act of fate, having been a part of each other’s lives since infancy, “popping milk bottles” at the same

daycare, to being “frenemies” in elementary school, to brief ly dating in Jr. High. Their relationship didn’t off icially begin until senior year of high school where Nubia’s dance performance during the talent show caught Brian’s eye. Attending prom together, they remained inseparable throughout the following summer until college would eventually take their lives in separate directions. Initially determined to stay together long-distance, they ultimately drifted apart, until graduation when returning home they found their hearts to have remained unchanged - becoming inseparable ever since. Knowing in his heart that Nubia was “the one,” and that he never wanted to be separated from her again, Brian began planning their perfect proposal. Originally having her 32nd birthday in mind for the proposal, the completion time of the custom-designed ring would push that date back. Still wanting to utilize the birthday as cover for the proposal, Brian decided the ring would be disguised as a late birthday present. And so, it was during a fall evening, following a comedy show and picking up takeout along the way home, that Brian retrieved the package - prearranged with their building’s doorman - that contained Nubia’s “late birthday present.” After settling in for the night and getting comfortable together, Nubia opened her gift of a jewelry box, and as she opened the box Brian began to get down on one knee. As the reality of the moment started to set in for Nubia, Brian asked her to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife. Nubia and Brian’s wedding took place at the gorgeous Malibu Rocky Oaks Estate Vineyard in Malibu, California. Guests were welcomed with a Senegalese basket containing items of the Yoruba tradition for Tasting the Four Elements. With a breathtaking view of the Santa Monica Mountains beyond, Nubia and Brian jumped the broom surrounded by loving family and friends. Nubia was stunningly elegant in a Valentini Spose dress, and Brian was classically handsome in his custom tuxedo.

REAL WEDDINGS

Best Memories: During the garter ceremony, I remember looking up at Brian, in his handsome white dinner jacket and thinking “WHO IS THIS MAN!” Honestly, it felt as if Brian literally transformed into my ‘handsome husband’ in that very moment. Brian isn’t much of a dancer but he managed to execute a really smooth two-step to get the crowd revved up. I absolutely loved it and was truly smitten during the ceremony. Advice for Engaged Couples: Before I started the process of interviewing wedding planners, I took the time to synthesize my wedding vision into one holistic look-book. This allowed me to edit my ideas and to have clearer expectations, and more knowledgeable conversations, about what I wanted and what the planner was capable of executing. Also, because of the complexities of our venue and my desire to ‘be hands off’ throughout the wedding weekend, I knew I wanted someone that could easily handle the logistics of hosting multiple weekend events and most important, understand my preferred aesthetic. This very detailed ‘look book’ covered everything from ceremony set-up, dinner seating, linen preferences, must-have cultural elements, even a shot list for the

photographer. My vision was clear yet unique, and it was imperative for me to do all of the upfront work (essentially a ‘brain dump’) so that once I turned it over to my planner Tricia Smith-Brown, I could truly enjoy the wedding planning process. Also, we can’t stress enough how important it is to focus on each other. Despite us dating for nearly three decades and living together for nearly 12 years, we were shocked by how some relatives had somewhat out of the blue expectations for their level of involvement and assumed considerations for their opinions. Also, about a month before the wedding, my dad provided some insightful advice in that despite this being a very happy time for Brian and me, we shouldn’t assume that everyone would automatically coalesce around us in support and that we were the focus of each other, and not necessarily everyone else. I think this made us even more appreciative of the friends and family that continued to show support in many forms, not just leading up to the wedding, but throughout the entire timeline of our relationship.

hen a family friend introduced Charlye and Stanley they were sure the pair would make a perfect couple, and it wouldn’t be long before that prediction became a reality. During a classic f irst date at an Italian restaurant Charlye and Stanley instantly connected, conversing long into the evening until the restaurant lights were turned off. The more time they continued to spend together the more it became apparent that they were indeed a perfect f it for each other. Realizing that they had discovered the love of their life made taking the next step towards together forever feels almost predestined. So when Charlye’s thirtieth birthday approached, Stanley found the perfect opportunity for an unforgettable proposal in the form of a trip to Miami. With a group of friends, they celebrated Charlye’s birth in the sunshine state. As a special gift, Stanley arranged a lovely dinner at the Versace Mansion where, in front of their close friends, he got down on one knee and asked Charlye to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife. Stanley and Charlye were married on March 16th in a beautiful cathedral ceremony in Houston, Texas. Charlye was stunning in a custom Ese Azenabor gown with a ten-foot train. Their wedding paid homage to Stanley’s Nigerian ancestry with traditional Igbo culture incorporated throughout. With the love and support of family and friends, they celebrated their union in a luxurious uptown reception, dancing long into the night. Best Memories: “Our best memory is our f irst dance. In a room full of all of our family and friends, it was magical to know that God has brought two people from so far away together in such a way.” Advice for Engaged Couples: “Our best advice is not to stress, it will all work out. Keep everything in perspective and don't sweat the small stuff. Remember to focus on the main thing: love.”

friendly conversations online, they wondered if they might run into each other someday. As fate would have it, that very next weekend Melisa was invited out to a bar with a friend, and immediately upon arrival, she crosses paths with Raymond on the dance f loor. Pleasantly surprised, they greeted each other and went back to their separate parties. Moments later, Melisa turned to her friend and said, “I don’t know why, but I feel like I should go f ind him again.” Meandering back through the dance f loor, Melisa found Raymond to be looking for her as well. Raymond: “For me, I mostly remember how stress-free we were the day of the wedding. While every step we made while planning our wedding abroad went relatively smooth, working through a house renovation, collaborating with our families to see us get married locally and Melisa needing emergency surgery the week before we left proved to be really stressful. But once we got to Cape Town and eventually our wedding day, we were truly able to relax, enjoy our day and focus on our love for each other.” Advice for Engaged Couples: “Find out what works best for you. Family and friends are important but when you think about your wedding day and making a life-long commitment to your partner, envision what's most important and then do that! If having one hundred of your closest friends is important, do that. If an intimate ceremony is what's in your heart, do that. Everything else will fall into place if you focus on what's important. Try to ignore the outside “inf luencers” of your relationship because, at the end of the day, your most favorite memory will be a unique moment that you and future partner share.”

W EDDING I D EAS Inspired by the pink sands of Bermuda Photographed by Nana Annan Photography

"Inspired by the mesmerizing pink sands of Bermuda, I had dreamt of this styled shoot for years and had to bring it to life when I learned the Coterie Retreat was coming to my (husband’s) island home for the 2018 retreat! Jewelry from Alexandra Mosher was one of the first gifts that my husband bought me while dating and it was love at first sight when I opened that little pink box. I knew her pink sand jewelry would be stunning as table-top elements for a high end wedding and so I let that vision be my guide for everything else. I intentionally curated a mix of Bermudian creatives to work alongside our very talented MunaLuchi Coterie Members. World-class talent and our spirit of community guided our collaboration and allowed us to create magic together on this beautiful day in December! " Oniki Hardtman of Oh Niki Occasions

t was an average day, seemingly like any other, when Elena was pulled over in her car for an expired tag. Driving away with a warning, neither she nor the off icer would have guessed they had just met the love of their lives. The wheels of fate were set in motion that day and a year later their paths would cross again, this time at a house party through Elena’s cousin. That evening the f irst pages of their love story were written, and so began their path towards together forever. Over time they became inseparable, sharing the parental love of a son. There was no questioning that they were meant to be. In Elena’s words, “we make each other laugh, we have fun, we are each other’s best friend.” On Mother’s Day of 2018, when Stanley took their relationship to the next level, asking Elena,

the love of his life, if she would honor him by being his wife. Elena and Stanley’s elegant luxury wedding took place in beautiful Coral Gables, Florida at the historic Hotel Colonnade. The couple incorporated Haitian culture in the music and signature drinks, honoring ancestral heritage during an unforgettable reception in a neoclassical, marble-tiled rotunda. Elena was gorgeous in a timeless lace gown, lighting up the aisle as her handsome groom in classic navy blue awaited his bride-to-be. Best Memories: "Our best memory is our f irst dance!" Advice for Engaged Couples: "The best advice I can give an engaged couple is to hire a wedding planner."

uring their time together as classmates in high school, Tondrea and Lavonte have built a foundation of friendship on years of caring support and mutual respect. When they off icially began dating, that foundation became the perfect base in which their love took root, blossoming into the unshakeable connection they share today. The moment in which they both realized they couldn’t picture life without the other occurred when having to temporarily say goodbye. Upon dropping Lavonte off at the airport for work, Tondrea recalls how she began to “feel sad and even shed a tear. I knew he would be back soon, but I couldn’t help but feel like I was losing my best friend.” After Lavonte returned, she expressed to him how his leaving made her feel, to which he whole-heartedly returned the sentiment. Never wanting to feel apart again, Lavonte asked Tondrea to spend forever together, asking for her hand in marriage during a romantic dinner in Miami. Tondrea and Lavonte were pronounced husband and wife during a gorgeous Miamichic ceremony at the iconic art deco venue of Temple House in the heart of South Beach. Tondrea was a vision at the altar in a Ryan & Walter dress completed with a long sparkling

veil. Surrounded by the love and support of family and friends they said their I do’s, taking their f irst steps down the path of together forever. Best Memories: "My best memory from my wedding was our f irst dance. It made everything feel so real. Holding my husband and singing a song about how we would spend our lives together was a moment I will never forget." Advice for Engaged Couples: "Enjoy your day to the fullest. Any issues that occur, ignore them because you will only get this day once!"

ven though Kourtney and Adeola both attended the same university they didn’t begin dating until after graduation.

Sharing several mutual friends, they would see each other in passing from time to time, to which Kourtney admits to secretly having a crush on him. It would be a seemingly random weekend when Kourtney’s friend, while DJ’ing in Alabama, mentioned her to Adeola and passed along her number. Soon after she received a text from Adeola, beginning a conversation that would carry them into their f irst date, and from there all the way to the altar. For Kourtney, she knew from the moment they met it was meant to be, “it was almost like God specif ically placed him in my life... he was everything that I never knew I needed,” she fondly recalls. Adeola, so enraptured by their conversations and shared outlook on life, knew that he had to “make her mine.” With their love of movies in mind, Adeola began planning their perfect proposal. Renting out the entire theater, and with the assistance of her friends, he awaited her exit from the theater room into the lobby - where surrounded by family and friends, he got down on one knee and asked her to spend their lives together forever as husband and wife. Kourtney and Adeola were joined together as wife and husband in two ceremonies over the course of a weekend. The f irst being their traditional Nigerian ceremony in honor of Adeola’s family, displaying rituals of the Yoruba tribe throughout. The second ceremony was their traditional Western wedding. For her dress, Kourtney fell in love with the f irst dress she tried on within the f irst store she walked into. Standing at the church altar in a custom navy blue and black suit, Adeola breathlessly awaited as Kourtney, the love of his life, illuminated the aisle in a chic, formf itting Ashley & Justin gown. There, with the support of family and friends, their love was made eternal. Memories: Kourtney - "Our f irst look was by far the best part of the day for me. The moment I touched Adeola’s shoulder and he turned around to see me for the f irst time, life changed instantly…for the better." Adeola – "The ride to the reception at the American Wedding, also the wedding party entrance was exciting, but the f irst dance with my wife was amazing and truly showed me what I get to experience for the rest of my life."

"My family put together the Nigerian ceremony for Friday in order to show my wife’s family and friends the importance of our culture. My mother had Nigerian attire custom made for my in laws and all of our family and friends participated in purchasing Nigerian attire for that day. The common rituals of the Yoruba tribe, which is my father’s tribe, were displayed throughout the ceremony and it was such an amazing day for us." - Adeola

HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR?

Lawrence: “We’re on a budget! My favorite question to ask in vendor meetings has been: ‘is that complementary?’ Then De always pinches me under the table, I’ve personally made fun of the sessions. I would like something, but then De would not, so then it’s out. The end. I’m big on experience, so De has largely defaulted to me on those decisions when it comes to menu and guest experience. The programmatic elements." DeJana: “Planning has really been great because we have amazing wedding planners! Thelma and Jennifer are so incredibly talented. From helping us decide invitation paper weight, to color palettes, to planning activities for our guest to picking out the right typeface and fonts…Their consulting f irm Infatuating Affairs is living up to the hype. They met while attending Howard University

THE PROPOSAL: "One afternoon, Grayson said, 'Let's go to that new French

restaurant you’ve been wanting to try.' So I immediately made a dinner reservation for us. I had been looking forward to this date night all week. When we arrived at the restaurant we were immediately seated and handed menus but no one came to our table. I mentioned to Grayson that it was weird that no one had brought us water yet. Shortly after, someone came up to the table with a bottle of champagne and poured us two glasses. I thanked them but when they left I told Grayson it was so weird that we haven’t been offered water. I was very confused by the unusual service we were receiving. As I sat there trying to f igure out why this was happening, Grayson asked me to put down my menu. He said that I have always been the planner but today he had a surprise for me. He got down on one knee and had a friend hide at the bar and f ilm the entire proposal!" Cynthia + Brayden WINNIPEG, CANADA WEDDING DATE: August 15th, 2019 WEDDING LOCATION: Whitetail Meadow, MB OCCUPATIONS: Canadian Air Force Aviator & Natural Health Professional HOW THEY MET:

Brayden and I met at his brotherʼs engagement party.

Braydenʼs brother and I had volunteered together at our churchʼs coffee shop for a year, every Wednesday for only three hours. I donʼt even know why I was invited to his engagement party - it was an intimate affair and the invite was def initely a pleasant surprise for me! I wasnʼt sure if I should go, because I wasnʼt friends with a lot of the people that would be there. I thankfully went (only because I dragged a friend with me) because my guess is, my life would be a lot different now if I wasnʼt there to meet Brayden. THE PROPOSAL: The weekend of our engagement was nothing short of

magical! A few months earlier, Brayden proposed that we do a road trip to Calgary, just the two of us. At the time I thought nothing of it in regards to the engagement proposal, because this would be our third trip to Calgary during our relationship, and Bray and I love road trips! He had planned a surprise trip to Lake Louise, which was only about two hours from us, and he wanted us to be there at around 10am. When we arrived at my favourite hotel, Bray booked a manicure for me, and helped pick a good colour and as I sat

down to have my hands and nails pampered. When my nails were completely dry, Bray casually led me to the edge of Lake Louise, which sat barely frozen at the base of a couple of mountains. The scene provided the most perfect backdrop, so Brayden pulled out his camera and tripod as he asked me if Iʼd like to take some photos. He positioned the camera, put the timer on (or so I thought) and sat with me. We did a few poses and then he said, “maybe we should take some photos standing now.” He stood, helped me up, and turned to me. I donʼt know, but as Brayden gazed into my eyes and began voicing all the things he loved about me, I was incredibly oblivious as to what was going on. He slowly (at least, that’s how it seemed) got down on one knee and reached in his pocket, and thatʼs when I let out a scream of realization that this was it! With trembling hands, he opened the ring box to reveal a

stunning, vintage-style ring that he had picked out with no help from me. He asked me if I would do him the honour of becoming his wife, and I said a resounding “yes”! Bray then told me that the camera was actually recording this whole time! DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. Our engagement session was at Lacoste Garden

Centre, a lovely green house located just outside Winnipeg. WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE?

For our f irst date, Bray and I went ice skating at The Forks, a popular tourist spot in Winnipeg. WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE?

Four words: The Off ice & Dominoʼs Pizza. We love cuddling and just enjoying each otherʼs warmth and company while watching Netf lix.

Caddie + Kurtillius WASHINGTON D.C. (UNION STATION) WEDDING DATE: September 21, 2019 WEDDING LOCATION: Hyattsville, Maryland OCCUPATIONS: Federal Government Employees HOW THEY MET

Caddie and Kurt met at a restaurant, during

brunch in Washington, D.C., in August 2015. While brunching with her friends, Caddie saw Kurt as he entered into the restaurant. Finding him immediately attractive, Caddie decided to break tradition and introduce herself. Thank God she did, because the chemistry was instantaneous. A true love at f irst sight story. THE PROPOSAL: Kurt proposed to Caddie on June 23, 2018, during the

weekend of his 33rd birthday. Unbeknownst to either one of them, the weekend would be f illed with surprises! Kurt proposed to Caddie at their Tyson's Corner apartment, located in McLean, Virginia. While Caddie was getting dressed, to take Kurt to his surprise party, she had no idea what was in store for her, when she walked out of the room. The proposal was very intimate. The apartment was f illed with f lowers, candles,

champagne, and a lot of love. The proposal made the surprise party increasingly better, as all of their friends and family were there to not only celebrate Kurt's birthday, but also a new chapter in their lives together. FIRST DATE? Caddie and Kurt's f irst date was to a Washington

Nationals regular season baseball game. The most memorable part of the game was Kurt watching Caddie eat a half-smoked hot dog from the famous Ben's Chili Bowl with a fork (after all you must be a lady on the f irst date, right?) After the game, the couple took the train home, exchanged stories and shared laughs together, which caused Kurt to nearly miss his stop; however, before departing the train, Kurt stole a goodbye kiss from Caddie.

WEDDING LOCATION: Southaven, Mississippi OCCUPATIONS: Family Medicine Physician & Attorney/City Prosecutor HOW THEY MET:

They met on Instagram. Louis found Denaya's online prof ile via a mutual friend

and he slid into Denaya's DMs when Instagram f irst came out in 2010. Though the f irst relationship did not work out, they reignited their love via the DMs again. Louis reached out to Denaya via her medical school email. After conversing for a while, they realized their love for each other had never faded. Time had allowed them to mature and grow individually only to come back together to build a strong foundation for a lasting relationship. THE PROPOSAL: Denaya graduated from medical school on the same day as Louis's 32nd birthday,

May 24, 2018. So they celebrated both occasions on that day in Atlanta, GA at TopGolf. A graduation party was thrown in Denaya's honor in her hometown of Opelousas, LA on May 26, 2018, with loved ones from both Louis and Denaya's families. Denaya and Louis both had secrets to reveal with each other on that special night. After eating, Denaya's great uncle stalled and gave a long grand neverending speech while candles were lit at the back of the graduation hall and red roses were handed to Denaya's stepson LJ, her father, her grandparents, and Louis's aunt in lieu of his late mother Annie Helen Conley. After the candles were lit and roses were handed out, Denaya's uncle ended his speech. Louis then took the stage and gracefully spoke about how proud he was of Denaya and then ventured further into talking about his love and admiration for Denaya. Meanwhile, Denaya's favorite love song played in the background, "You & I (Nobody in the world)" by John Legend. He then proceeded to walk her to each person with a rose. They each handed her a rose and gave her a hug. So many tears were shed during these moments. Once Denaya the roses, Louis walked Denaya PHOTOGRAPHY: Neffi Bergen Wedding received Photography |all VENUE: Lacoste Garden Centre over to the back of the reception hall where there were candles leading up to a beautiful backdrop featuring more candles, a picture of Denaya's late mother Minister Sarah Edwards, and white Christmas lights. At the center of many beautifully lit candles and with the beautiful backdrop, Louis then dropped down to one knee and asked Denaya to marry him in front of her closest family and friends. Later Louis was surprised with an Alpha Phi Alpha birthday cake from Denaya, and everyone sang Happy Birthday to him. It was an amazing, dreamy, fairytale evening that the pair will never forget. WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE?

Our initial f irst date in 2010 was a meet & greet rendezvous in Baton Rouge, LA.

friend, and the rest is history. For the proposal, Delvyn and I talked about getting married quite a few times as our partnership strengthened, but nothing too serious. At his brother’s wedding, Delvyn mentioned that he would be the best husband ever! I, of course, laughed it off! A few months later, we traveled to Philadelphia from Virginia for the “Made in America” Festival over Labor Day weekend. Before we departed, Delvyn asked if it was okay to move our dinner reservations up so we could dine with some of his colleagues based in the Philadelphia region. When we arrived in Philly, he told me that his colleagues had to decline the invite, and he and I would just go and enjoy the meal without them. Kimberly + Justin ATL ANTA, GA WEDDING DATE: March 25, 2019 WEDDING LOCATION: Acworth, GA HOW THEY MET:

We met in a mutual friend's Facebook group. We

instantly connected because we both attended Auburn University around the same time, but didn't know each other. Kim: “One day I felt bold and put the word "Bae" under one of Justin's comments in the group. He immediately sent me a private message and we started conversing regularly at that point, then met in person a few months later. We've been together ever since.” Justin: “Kim had ‘shot her shot’ under one of my comments. We eventually started talking frequently. We later met in person and we were inextricable ever since.” THE PROPOSAL: After spending the weekend visiting my parents

in Alabama, I spent the ride back home thinking about how I would propose. I have had plenty of ideas as to how I would pull it off but that would likely require more time to make happen. Once I made it home, Kim and I were having a conversation (which was probably on the animated side) while she was in bed most likely watching TV when it came to me to just do it. I left under the guise of having to

unpack something and went to the hiding spot I had for the ring. I soon returned to the room Kim was in and got on one knee and proposed. And of course, she said yes! DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. Our engagement

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE?

Our favorite things to do as a couple is attend concerts, travel and spend time with our family and friends. HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR? The planning has been very low stress

by design. From the beginning, we have tried to choose things that would cause the least amount of stress, such as an all inclusive venue, since we only had 7 months to plan. Overall, the venue and vendors alleviated every possible reason to be stressed and were a pleasure to work with.

Funny story, we met at a fashion show. I was there

helping someone and Marc saw me at a vendor’s table and he was shocked and pointed his f inger and said “wow, that’s you,” as confused as I was I just smiled. He walked towards me, and as always I am doing my best to act like I’m leaving or I am busy so he does not come over, but he ended up cutting around and passed security and stood in front of me. He said, 'Hi, I am Edouard. I cannot believe that’s you. I have been following you on IG. It’s so nice to f inally meet you. I have seen you around but never wanted to bother you as you were always with your girls. I always liked your pictures.' I said, 'Oh, thank you.' He invited me to go to the afterparty but I told him I was too tired. I was so nervous being around him, I was sweating when we said our goodbyes and the next morning at exactly 6 am he sent me a hand wave on messenger. THE PROPOSAL: It was a Saturday, our usual date night except it was his

weekend to pick a place for the date. He had a fever that day so I suggested we stay home and relax but he was so adamant that we go out. Got dressed

and we were headed towards 95. I was asking where we were going but he wouldn’t tell me. He drove for 45 minutes and we arrived at Mai Kai in Ft. Lauderdale. He was sweating the entire time and I kept saying we should head back home babe you do not look too good. He kept driving. We got out of the car and he wanted to wear a different jacket and I was starting to get a little annoyed. We parked Valet and went inside. We sat down and about 15 minutes later, he said, “I’ll be back, I’ll go make sure the car is ok.” Again, confused as possible I said ok. I sat down at the table by myself for 30 minutes and the show started and he still wasn’t there. Finally, we ate and Marc was sweating, soaking wet, his shirt was soaked. At Mai Kai, it’s a Hawaiian themed restaurant. They did the show and afterwards, they called guests to participate in their routine. So I raised my hand but instead of me, they picked him - mind you, I have a background in dance. He went up, he did the steps and everyone got down but he stayed on stage. While doing the move I turned around and I saw Marc on his knees...I almost passed out as he said, 'Babe you are the most beautiful woman on the planet, your heart and soul attracted me to you and I have been falling deeper and deeper in love with you. You are my life, my heart and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Please marry me and I will hold you to the highest level for the rest of your life.' DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. Our

So it f it perfectly that we also dressed the part for our engagement session. I styled myself under our company Looks by Maël B with the help of fashion designer Scarlie Paul of Designed by Scarlie. PALM BEACH FLORIDA

WEDDING DATE: December 15, 2019 WEDDING LOCATION: Delray Beach Marriott OCCUPATIONS: Doctor of Physical Therapy Students HOW THEY MET:

We met at a Labor Day weekend church camp in 2006.

She sat a row directly in front me and although I was supposed to be focusing on whatever was being shared on stage, I turned to another friend of mine and asked, “Who is this girl?” I saw him speak to her when we were coming into the building but thought nothing of it until I was actually in close proximity to her. When he told me her name I initially thought of what would I say? How would the conversation start? Would I awkwardly stare at her hoping for her to say something f irst? There was so much for a 16 year old to think about. I noticed that she had a couple of gold rings on her f ingers with hoop bracelets, so 90’s early 2000’s style - I know right, but it seemed like an opportunity, so I took it. I tapped her on the shoulder and she turned around, I politely and nervously said, “Hey those are nice rings, can I see one?” That was the best I could do?! I was shocked! Def initely not the smoothest line in by far, but hey, it worked. She stared at me hesitantly with a look that I presume said, “who are you? And why do you want to see one of my rings?” But when she indulged in my curiosity...I was not ready. She actually gave me one of her many rings and let me hold it throughout the camp weekend. Later

that night, as we walked back to our rooms, we talked the whole way there and continued to get to know one another that entire weekend. We used every chance we were afforded, to meet up and talk or sit next to one another during different programs. THE PROPOSAL: "We planned to go on our last dinner date of

the year, which we recently started doing every year for the past 4 years on Dec 30th 2017 to plan out our goals and discuss how the previous year went in regards to our previous goals. Dorson planned the whole entire night which wasn’t rare lol. As we were walking towards the restaurant, I saw a canopy f illed with lights and beautiful white roses. I didn’t think much of it since I didn’t have

E N G AG E M E N T S

my eyeglasses on to really see what was going on. However, Dorson insisted we move closer and take a look on what was really going on. So me being completely clueless, I took his hand and started walking towards all the action. That’s when I heard romantic music playing and cameras starting f lashing. Squinting my eyes to get a better look, I realized my family and close friends were all facing me with the biggest smiles on their faces. And at that exact moment, I realized what was really going on! I froze, dropped to my knees and started crying my eyes out! I was shocked, speechless and in total disbelief! We always talked about taking “the next step” after graduation so I wasn’t expecting it at all, but this was def initely the perfect timing! Walking under the canopy, I continued to cry as he took my hand and showered me with words of love and adoration! He proclaimed how much he loved me and how much I meant to him in this world and more, as he usually did, but this time was different. I saw how choked up it was getting and how emotional the moment was for him. Then he got on one knee and said “I want to give you this ring the same way you gave me yours years ago. Will you marry me?” and I screamed, with tears running down my face, yes, Yes, Y ESSSS! I will treasure that moment forever" DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION. Our engagement session was incredible! It was a bit of glamour,

modern chic with a whole lot of romance and rebellious love. Our photographer was amazing and knew exactly how to capture our love for one another. We stopped at 4 different locations where each place had a different vibe, a different look. Prior to the shoot, we used images and the ideas from our planner and photographer to come up

E N G AG E M E N T S

with the concept of the overall image we wanted to portray for each scene. Of course Dorson wanted the muscle car and smoke, but the collective ideas to bring the shoot together made the experience amazing! WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE?

Our f irst date was the typical high school teenage date. We went to see a movie and ate dinner at Fridays. I know right? Fridays?! But we were in high school and that was the perfect f irst date! It was my f irst date ever with a boy! And I was so nervous! WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE?

We love to travel and we are hardcore foodies! We enjoy going to new restaurants and eating different foods. Our goal is to travel to as many countries as we can, while experiencing something unfamiliar and create new memories together. We both share a love for good music, and it does not matter the genre. I personally have a thing for Korean dramas, and Dorson reads recreationally all the time, like all the time if he gets a chance.

HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR?

Planning for the wedding has been nothing but amazingly stressful! It’s been fun-f illed, exciting, and nonstop, but we are enjoying every minute of it. We are so blessed to have a great support system, between our family and friends, who have been there to keep us on track. Being in school and in our clinical rotations for our DPT programs, between studying and planning, our amazing planner makes the burden a bit less, which is phenomenal. This entire process is nothing but memorable! It is such a blessing to watch everything fall into place and our vision come to life, Lord willing! I’m excited to go through the most important day of my life with all of my closest family and friends! I personally can’t wait to get the “did we really just get married” feeling! We are ready to dance all night long and want it to be a celebration of everything prayed for and all the sacrif ices made for this day to come.

WEDDING DATE:

December 7, 2019

WEDDING LOCATION:

New Orleans, LA

HOW THEY MET: In 2010, we attended the annual week-long

National Association of Student Affairs Professionals (NASAP) conference to represent our respective universities. There is a superstition at the conference that every year a campus queen meets her future husband. Although we had never met, we shared a mutual friend who texted me to express Shawn’s interest. After three days of persistent trying, we began to talk and realized how much we had in common. We remained inseparable the remainder of the conference and dated long distance for years while we both completed our graduate studies.

E N G AG E M E N T S

We would take numerous cross country trips and became a large friend group for which we became known as the “turn up” couple. After years of long-distance dating, we f inally settled in Miami. THE PROPOSAL: We attended my best friend’s wedding in December 2017 in the

Dominican Republic and I knew at that moment that I was next. I wanted a date that was signif icant to the women in my life. Our mothers’ birthdays are a week apart and my maternal grandfather also passed away on my mom’s birthday so I chose the midpoint between their birthdays, October 12, 2018. Our friends were also a huge part in keeping our relationship af loat so I wanted them to share in the moment. I booked a private club in the Betsy Hotel on South Beach Miami and invited 80 of our closest friends and family. Jade is nosy and ruins all her surprises. She claimed she had an idea for months and when she walked in the room she said “hey y’all” but she was greeted with a line of people holding candles and then I gave a speech and asked her to marry me. She still cried. Mission accomplished. DESCRIBE YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION We googled the name motley one

night because outside of a rock and roll Motley Crue and an HBCU love photo, we had no idea what to do. We discovered the Motley Jester which was perfect for my

New Orleans background and our theatre wedding. We also decided to play upon the essence of our new home, Miami, by showing both the glamorous lifestyle and life on the water. WHAT DID YOU DO ON YOUR FIRST DATE? I f lew to Nashville to visit Shawn and some friends. He took me to get food, a stroll through Centennial Park and then to a car show. Afterward, his friends tried to welcome me by taking shots and because I refused, Shawn took mine for me. I knew he was it. FAVORITE THING TO DO AS A COUPLE? Eat and travel! We love to try new restaurants and explore new cities/countries. We set a goal to bring in the New Year in a different place every year. HOW HAS WEDDING PLANNING BEEN SO FAR? Stressful but fun! We originally planned to have the wedding on Jade’s 30th birthday but had to change the dates for unforeseen circumstances. We both come from huge families so trying to maintain a guest list has been a daily struggle; however, we are enjoying this time and growing together. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FORWARD TO MOST ON THE WEDDING DAY? Finally making it off icial and saying I do! We are both also extremely excited for the reception - to dance the night away with good people, food and music.

bbey and Samuel’s love story began while both were traveling with friends on holiday in Miami. Their initial meeting took place at an off-beach bar, where Abbey fondly recalls how “it was love at f irst sight.” Approaching Abbey’s seat, Samuel struck up a conversation that felt so natural it was as if they were picking up where they left off. As their relationship continued to develop over time, Abbey recalls how Samuel was “very different from anyone I have ever dated before, but he was exactly what I wanted/ needed in my life, and being with him has been like the missing part of my puzzle has been f illed.” Realizing that he had also found the missing part of his puzzle, Samuel began planning their perfect proposal. What seemed to be a normal date night dining out changed course when instead of Samuel picking Abbey up, an Uber driver pulled up instead. Not disclosing their destination location, Abbey was dropped off at the tallest building in Europe, London Bridge tower - The Shard. Under the guise that the driver had dropped her off at the wrong location, Samuel met up with Abbey and decided that while they were there they might as well go in. With champagne in hand, on the highest f loor, they stood overlooking the sun setting on the London skyline. A few f loors down they then enjoyed a romantic candlelight dinner after which Samuel ref lects on their life together up to this point, and what the future may bring. Before Abbey has a chance to understand the true signif icance of the evening, Samuel gets down on one knee and shocks her into silence by asking if she’ll spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife.

Abbey and Samuel were married in a stunning destination wedding in Santorini, Greece. Abbey was gorgeous in a custom Alonuko sheath gown with a detachable overskirt and f loor-length veil. Surrounded by the love and support of family and friends dressed in traditional Nigerian attire in honor of their heritage, Abbey and Samuel were forever joined as husband and wife. Best Memories: The best memory from the wedding was exchanging our vows with the caldera in our backdrop view. Absolutely breath-taking! elila and Zewerede met through mutual friends, immediately forming a connection and going out on their f irst date the very next day. Having so much in common, it seemed as if everything they learned about each other continued in furthering their connection. It wouldn’t be long before the realization that they’d discovered in each other the one began to surface in their minds. And so it was when they were preparing to take their mothers on a pre-mother’s day brunch that the perfect opportunity presented itself. aving f irst met while attending high school together in Virginia Beach, Alexis and Andres’ love has been built

throughout the years over a foundation of friendship, support, and trust. And so when the time came to plan their proposal, Andres, had the perfect setting in mind. After studying abroad in Barcelona, Spain during college, Alexis fell head over heels for the City of Counts. Knowing it holds a special place in her heart, Andres organized a joint family trip. On their last night in Barcelona, following an unforgettable vacation, Andres reserved the entire top f loor of the National Art Museum for a private dinner. It was in this historic setting, surrounded by their family, where Andres asked Alexis to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife. On the day of their wedding, Alexis was gorgeous in a Madison James mermaid gown with lace embellished openback and a sweetheart neckline. Within a picture-perfect, tropical, mansion garden setting, Andres, in a classic Italian, ivory tuxedo, awaited his bride at the altar where their love was made eternal. Best Memories: "My favorite memory was probably my mom handing me my late brother's cross that he used to wear, for me to wear down the aisle. I knew I wanted to incorporate him into my wedding some way and that was the perfect way for me to feel like he was walking with me. Andres's favorite memory was our f irst walk down the aisle as husband and wife he describes our walk towards the venue as 'surreal.'" Advice for Engaged Couples: "Get an early start and do your research! Don't feel pressured to go with the f irst vendor you come across based on one recommendation and make them show you proof of their work! It's so important to see proof. Also ask lots of questions, read the f ine print and get everything in writing. orlyne and Stanley’s love story began on a popular dating website where “a picture and a few words” started them on the path towards happily ever after. Their online conversations set the stage for an unforgettable f irst date at a local soul food restaurant in New Rochelle, New York. Morlyne fondly recalls how “funny, compassionate, respectful, tall and handsome” she found Stanley to be, and that somewhere deep in her soul, she “had a good feeling about him and knew that God sent a good one.” It wouldn’t be long until the distant sound of wedding bells could be heard in the hearts of both Morlyne and Stanley. Morlyne knew Stanley was the one after meeting his parents, “observing his interactions with his family, especially his mother” and how kind and respectful he was. And so it was, during a cool November evening, on a rooftop lounge overlooking the New York skyline, surrounded by a surprise of family and friends, that Stanely went down on one knee and asked the love of his life for her hand in marriage. Morlyne and Stanley were joined as husband and wife in a classic church wedding followed by a gorgeous country club reception at Crest Hollow in Woodbury, New York. Morlyne was stunning in a Cinderella-inspired Randy Fenoli gown. Randy Fenoli, also the host of TLC’s Say Yes to the Dress, personally f itted Morlyne to her gown at Kleinfeld, where he was showcasing his collection the morning she arrived. Bead-embellished, f loral embroidery, an illusion neckline, all within a ball gown silhouette - Morlyne stood at the altar with her husband-to-be as a fairytale vision come to life. aving just moved back to Nashville from Las Vegas, Sukhbir reached out to his friend Danielle for recommendations on places to go out in Midtown, Nashville. After arranging a group meetup on the Demonbreun strip, Danielle introduced Sukhbir to her co-worker and good friend, Amber, who “had an instant connection.” Soon after meeting Amber, Sukhbir asked Danielle for Amber’s contact information to invite her out for a Sunday brunch. Amber fondly recalls how they “hit if off immediately, formed a strong connection, and have been inseparable ever since.”

modern pink was selected as the central color, ref lected in Amber’s gorgeous fuchsia Lehenga, and Sukhbir’s stylish Turban. The color theme of the Christian ceremony was a lovely light gray and white with delicate touches of f loral color to enhance the garden greenery and ethereal atmosphere.

Three months into the relationship and Amber and Sukhbir knew they loved each other deeply. Everything seemed to be lining up perfectly, feeling compatible on every level, and within a year it was apparent they completed each other’s life. It was during a date at a gourmet organic farm where they would take the next step towards together forever. After touring the farm, Sukhbir guided Amber to a lovely garden gazebo lit with candles and decorated with framed photos of their time together. Best Memories: My favorite wedding memory is our family and friends from all over the world coming together with open minds and hearts and dancing the night away together to Indian Bhangra music. It was truly amazing to see everyone come together for us, especially with all the hate in the world. The room was so full of love and pure joy, you could almost touch it. I’ll never forget the level of pure bliss we both felt after making it back to our honeymoon suite after the send off. We both just laid there and cried tears of joy from how much love we felt all weekend. It was the best feeling in the world. Advice for Engaged Couples: For me, decompressing with an evening run was really helpful when I was feeling overwhelmed with aspects of the planning process. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed with everything that goes into a wedding, but all of the stress slowly fades away if you give yourself time alone with your thoughts and focus your energy on something other than wedding planning. It’s a form of meditation that is absolutely necessary when planning a wedding, especially when planning two separate weddings.

She picks me up when I’m down, she knows best when I can’t think straight, supports me when my vision isn’t so clear and keeps me focused…” Upon when realizing that Jasmine would forever be the only person that completes him so entirely, Benjamin began planning their perfect proposal. And so it was, that during a trip to Antigua, while enjoying a sunset dinner beside the beach, a romantic dessert displaying his message, Benjamin got down on one knee and asked Jasmine for

of the mock ups and vision boards, it still was so hard to picture exactly how everything would come together but I knew Lola and the amazing vendors we hired would do their best to bring our vision to life. They literally outdid themselves. I was a ball of emotions and cried tears of joy, it was so surreal. To this day, our family and friends and even complete strangers talk about our wedding and how beautiful it was.” Advice for Engaged Couples: Jasmine: “Talk with your

her hand in marriage. For Jasmine, wedding shopping was an “exhausting” process, having tried on at least seventy dresses in four different states. Finally, after what seemed an endless journey, Jasmine found the dress of her dreams in Bridal Ref lections on Fifth Avenue, NY. Jasmine was a vision in a silver Stephen Yearick, strapless mermaid gown with delicate beading and embroidery. Gracing the ballroom aisle of a picturesque waterfront venue in Baltimore, Jasmine joined Benjamin at the altar where he awaited his bride in a custom Miquel Wilson tux, and it was there in front of loving family and friends that they were forever joined as husband and wife.

Yes the wedding is an important part for many people and we all tend to have dreams of what we want, but the marriage is even more important so make sure you are communicating and constantly checking in. Lastly and most importantly, if you are having a wedding of any kind hire a wedding planner! Their expertise and list of vendors are golden and will save you time, money and lots of unnecessary headaches.” Ben: “My advice is plain and simple and echoes my wife - get a wedding planner and have a working budget! ouina and Adam initially caught each other’s eye on social media where the f irst pages of their love story were written. During conversations, they began to realize the potential depths of their connection as their commonalities continued to reveal themselves. It wasn’t long before communication over social media was no longer enough, and the desire to meet in person took hold. What began as a quick cup of coffee turned into a full lunch, as Louina fondly recalls, “We just couldn’t bring our conversation, our time together, to an end.” For their proposal, Louina and Adam had long been planning a trip to France. When the opportunity to take the trip became possible, the city of love served as the perfect setting for Adam to take their relationship to the next level. Upon arriving at their penthouse suite, Adam suggested they prepare to explore the city for sightseeing and pictures. While waiting for Adam to f inish getting ready, Louina stood on the balcony admiring the beauty of the landscape. It was there on the balcony that Adam approached her with a video containing a collection of their

most memorable moments together. “It was all I could do to hold back my tears,” Louina recalls, and as the video came to an end, she found Adam on one knee. In Louina’s second language of creole, Adam asked for her hand in marriage. Louina and Adam’s modern fairytale wedding took place at the gorgeous Spanish Monastery in Miami Beach, Florida. Louina was breathtaking in a Penelope gown with embellished lace sleeves, elegant open-back, and cathedral train - completing her modern Cinderella look. Adam, standing dapper in a sophisticated grey suit, awaited his bride-to-be at the altar. Surrounded by their loved ones, Adam and Louina were forever joined as husband and wife. Best Memories: Our best memory from our wedding would have to be the foot washing ceremony. Incorporating that helped us place Christ in our unity. Advice for Engaged Couples: Take your time and communicate with your soonto-be husband or wife. It will be diff icult, but this day is for you both to celebrate together.

K

era and Stanley’s love story began on the dance f loor of a lounge in Cambridge, Massachusetts where they danced right into each other’s hearts. Noticing him from across the room, Kera initially urged her friend to speak to him f irst. Realizing as the evening drew on that she wasn’t going to make a move, and with her friend returning the nudge back to her, Kera walked over to introduce herself to Stanley. After some light banter, they made their way to the dance f loor where they danced and talked through a few songs, exchanging numbers and sharing a hug before parting. On her car ride home, Stanley sent Kera a text message expressing how nice it was to meet her, and that he hoped she had a safe ride home. Kera fondly recalls how she “knew right then he would be someone special.” Knowing that in Kera he had also found someone special, when the time came for Stanley to make their love forever, the perfect proposal opportunity presented itself in the form of her 30th birthday celebration. Sharing a birthday month with her siblings and best friend, they collectively traveled to New Orleans for the occasion. On the evening of her birthday, while enjoying dinner in the NOLA Warehouse District, Stanley gave a toast to the special day as a brass band came into the room playing birthday music. As they quieted down he began to give a second toast, and it was at this point his intentions became clear. Dropping to one knee, he asked Kera if they could spend the rest of their birthdays together. In Kera’s words, “I could barely keep my composure through the squeals of utter joy and tears of happiness. It was complete magic!” Kera and Stanley were pronounced husband and wife in a gorgeous ceremony hosted at the historic

Main Street Station in vibrant Richmond, Virginia. Wanting their wedding to be a ref lection of “black love and black creativity,” it was really important for them to support black-owned businesses throughout the planning and vendor selection process. Kera made the altar glow in a striking, f it-and-f lare dress with low back and alluring sweetheart neckline. It was there, surrounded by the love of family and friends, that they took their f irst steps towards together forever as husband and wife. Best Memories: "Jumping the broom and walking down the aisle together as husband and wife. We processed out of the ceremony to “Sunday Candy” by Donnie Trumpet & the Social Experiment. The energy of the song matched with the fact that we were married on a Sunday was such a vibe! It really set the tone for the rest of our celebration, and to date, is still one of our favorite songs." Advice for Engaged Couples: "Budget! Don’t go broke planning your dream wedding. Keep things in perspective: the wedding is a one-day event; your marriage is a lifetime! It’s best to go into the next phase of your relationship on solid f inancial footing, and being realistic about what you can and cannot afford for the wedding is a great place to start. Make a list of what you absolutely want or need for the big day, and what you’re willing to cut or compromise. If things get tight, refer back to the list, and be purposeful about sticking to it. In the end, your vision for your wedding should match your f inancial capacity. If it doesn’t, make adjustments."

aneaba and Kietric initially met while working together in the healthcare industry. Over time while conversing with each other during work training they became close friends. Though they shared a naturally strong connection at the time their love wouldn’t truly blossom until years later after life took them in separate directions when Taneaba found a new job. Running into a former mutual co-worker one day, Kietric inquired about Taneaba and through this chance encounter was able to reconnect with her. Taneaba fondly recalls how they “were able to pick back up where we left and became a hit!” With their love blossoming and growing stronger every day, they both knew they’d discovered the one when realizing they “couldn’t spend more than a day away from each other.” Taneaba and Kietric celebrated their union in a gorgeous gold and ivory wonderland with New Orleans f lare. Dramatic and formal, Taneaba glided down the altar where her loving groom awaited her hand in marriage. Their evening was topped off with a Second Line Band, as family and friends danced their way through Sugarland, Texas. seemingly random day like any other would, unbeknownst to Tashana, turn out to ultimately change the course of her life forever - when while perusing her sister’s social media she came across her future husband. For Tashana, she knew immediately that she had to meet Rory, and a month later her sister was able to make the connection through a mutual friend. “Rory made the initial call, and the conversation went off effortlessly, lasting over three hours,” Tashana fondly recalls. Their f irst off icial meeting was at a party where they “hit it off immediately” during an evening of dancing, laughing and good vibes.

for the next three-and-a-half years their love only grew stronger. Knowing that in Tashana he had discovered the one, Rory began planning their perfect proposal. And so it was, that during a Thanksgiving vacation to Morocco, Rory decided to make their love permanent. During a romantic four-course dinner in Marrakech, Tashana and Rory expressed to each other what they were thankful for in honor of the holiday. When it was Rory’s turn to share his thanks, he expressed his love Tashana, and getting down on one knee, asked her to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife.

I

t was during a rooftop party in Chinatown, Washington D.C. where Abby and Marcus f irst crossed paths. With both of them only knowing a few people at the party they seemed to gravitate towards each other, striking up a conversation. Ironically, Marcus was set up to meet someone else that evening but fate had other plans. They left the party with a positive impression of the other, thinking about how great the conversation had been. Almost a month later, their friends threw another party, and again they gravitated towards each other - relieved to have the opportunity to pick up where they left off. With both of them feeling as if their coming together had been more than serendipity, they began dating a week later. Throughout the next f ive years of their relationship, Abby and Marcus had experienced their share of life’s ups and downs, but no matter what they always found comfort in knowing they had each other. During that time they increasingly found moments demonstrating traits that they would consider ideal in someone to spend the rest of their lives with. In Abby’s words, “our years of building a rock-solid relationship, where communication and honesty are at the center, is the reason I knew he was ‘the one.’” And so it was after moving to a new apartment in DC that they decided to host both of their families for the Christmas Holiday - providing Marcus with a perfect opportunity. On Christmas day, surrounded by their loved ones, Marcus asked Abby to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife. Abby and Marcus’ wedding was a romantic and elegant garden party themed event at the Anderson House in Washington DC. A Carribean steel band further added cultural elements to the atmosphere in honor of Abby’s parents who are from the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Abby was gorgeous in a dramatic ball-gown with a plunging sweetheart neckline and

low-back with lace accents. Marcus stood dapperly at the altar awaiting his bride where, surrounded by the love of family and friends, they were forever joined as husband and wife. Best Memories: Abby: “I really, really didn’t want to cry during the ceremony and ruin the pictures. But after Marcus’ vows, I was really emotional. By the time we were off icially married, the moment just really hit me hard. After all the months of planning, we were f inally married. My favorite moment was the one when we were pronounced husband and wife. I cried tears of joy when we kissed. It was an amazing feeling.” Marcus: “My most memorable moment was watching Abby descend the staircase with her parents. It was a magical moment. So often you see brides walk down the aisle, so seeing her come down this large, ornate staircase in her gorgeous dress made the moment very real and very special.” Advice for Engaged Couples: Wedding planning can bring out a lot of emotions - some good and some not so good - between you, your future spouse and your respective family and friends. This is a really important opportunity for you all to work on your communication skills, your delegation, and division of labor skills, your ability to do future planning and your ability to resolve disputes. In other words, use this as an opportunity to deepen your relationship. Take time to ref lect on your love and don't constantly focus on the to-do list. Most importantly remember that this is your day and keeping your love for each other front and center is more important than the needs of all the other people in your life who might want things from you as you plan this big moment.

t was at a restaurant where Sophia f irst crossed paths with the best friend of her future husband. Convincing Sophia that she had to meet David, she gave his friend her number to pass along. After their initial phone conversations, David and Sophia arranged for a group date. The date was f illed with good vibes and deep conversation. David was “stunned” by Sophia, “impressed by her knowledge,” and enjoyed how much their life visions were aligned. Sophia fondly recalls how “handsome” he was with a “beautiful smile,” being even more “impressed by his calm demeanor and deep voice.” The attraction between them was certainly palpable and only continued to grow from that moment on. After three years of a loving and supportive relationship, David decided it was time to make their love forever with a proposal of marriage. The perfect opportunity presented itself during Sophia’s birthday celebration. With a houseful of family and friends, the energy of the atmosphere created the ideal setting to write the next chapter of their love story. After blowing out the candles on her cake, David got down on one knee, looked into the eyes of the love of his life, and said, “I don’t know what you wished for but, will you be my wife?” Sophia and David’s intimate riverside ceremony was hosted at the beautiful Occoquan Regional Park in Virginia. The Bride was gorgeous in a custom Barbara Kavchok gown with organza overskirt and completed with a vintage glam birdcage veil. In a picture-perfect setting, Sophia met David at the altar where they took their f irst steps as husband and wife towards happily ever after. Best Memories: "The ceremony was breathtaking. I remember being overwhelmed with gratefulness. Everything was perfect, including the weather, pastor, guests, string trio, etc. I am blessed!" Advice for Engaged Couples: "Hire an amazing wedding planner so you can enjoy your moment in time. The day will come and go too fast to be stressed!"

igh school sweethearts, Nicole and Rashad f irst met when, with mutual friends, Rashad attended a family cookout at Nicole’s grandparent’s house. The sweetheart sparks were f lying between them, instantly connecting and exchanging phone numbers. Dating throughout high school, their friendship and love for each other continued to grow. In Nicole’s words, “Rashad was always there for me during good times and bad.” In a sweet and sentimental gesture of love, Rashad fashioned their perfect proposal after the way in which Nicole’s father proposed to her mother. Under the guise of looking at engagement rings for the f irst time, to gauge what style Nicole would be interested in, she was pleasantly surprised to f ind her parents at the jewelry store awaiting their arrival. With the blessing of her parents, Rashad expressed his love for Nicole and asked her to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife. Nicole and Rashad jumped-the-broom in a beautiful museum ceremony in Boston, Massachusetts. Nicole was glowing as she walked down the aisle in a statement-making Ines Di Santo gown with an extended train and veil, completed with a royal tiara. Surrounded by loving family and friends, highschool sweetheart dreams came true as Nicole and Rashad were pronounced husband and wife - taking the f irst steps of their journey towards together forever. Best Memories: "The best memory from our wedding was reading our vows to each other in front of all of our family and friends. We decided months before just to pour our hearts out to each other, and we did. It was such a beautiful and special moment for us and seeing everyone sharing in the emotion of the room." Advice for Engaged Couples: "Do exactly what you want to do. It is your big day, and your happiness on that day is the priority. Have everything planned out, and do not spill any of the details with anyone. Create a dream team of vendors that all see your vision and share in your love story." vendors BAND: Soul of Boston BRIDE'S DRESSES: Ines Di Santo, Galia Lahav, and Marchesa BRIDAL SALON: Isabel O’Neil Bridal Collection BRIDE'S SHOES: Sophia Webster BRIDESMAIDS DRESSES: Jenny Yoo CALLIGRAPHY: Simone Wornum, Script by Simone CAKES/ DESSERTS: Montilio’s CATERING: Gourmet Caterers CEREMONY VENUE: John F. TANYA + SCOTT C A P E TOW N , S O U T H A F R I C A SEPTEMBER 1, 2018 P H O TOG R A P H E D B Y S c h a n t e l Me r w e

Text by Samuel Naumick

T

he f irst chapter of Tanya and Scott’s love story began when they were introduced by a mutual

friend during a barbeque while both were still attending high school. Having so much in common they clicked immediately, and within a few weeks were off icially dating. Their high school sweetheart status would be short-lived but the ending was amicable and they happily remained good friends over the next few years. It would be during another gathering of mutual friends in which Tanya and Scott would once again f ind themselves together. While enjoying a relaxing houseboat trip for a few days on a beautiful lake, Tanya and Scott realized the former feelings of love and romance were still very much on the surface. Unable to deny their affections for each other, they openly expressed their true feelings to discover they were completely mutual - and from that moment on have remained inseparable ever since. Following their romantic houseboat reunion, Tanya and Scott were approaching their four year anniversary when, while visiting his family in South Africa, a diamond ring in a jewelry shop window caught Scott’s eye. Unable to picture themselves with anyone else, Scott had already been dreaming about their perfect proposal. Thinking about the ring all night, Scott went back to the jewelry store, purchasing it the very next morning. During the weekend of their four year anniversary, after a day f illed with champagne, culinary delights, and a cruise up the Yarra River, Tanya and Scott settled into their royal suite for some relaxation. It was there that Scott turned to Tanya, the other half of his heart, and asked her to spend the rest of her life with him as husband and wife. Tanya and Scott’s traditional wedding ceremony in Zimbabwe celebrated the coming together of two families, expressed in multiple performances of song and dance.

Their wedding style was culturally elegant with an edge of modernity. Tanya was gorgeous in a custom dress designed by Leah Da Gloria, covered by intricate beaded lace and with a detachable skirt. The bride lit up the aisle as she approached her handsome prince, where they were joined forever together as husband and wife. Best Memories: "The f irst look shoot! Seeing each other for the f irst time fully dressed up on the day was the most personal and private experience we had during the day." Advice for Engaged Couples: "You will want to try and cut costs by not having a wedding planner, however, a good wedding planner is invaluable and will help settle the nerves in the run-up to the wedding by sorting out all the minor details and last-minute changes as well as organising all the suppliers on the day so you actually get to enjoy it and take it all in. Find a good one, make sure they are the right f it for you and move onto the rest of the planning - they will be able to help you through it as well which should make the process less stressful."

WE D D I NG I D E AS Inspired by the cobblestone streets and eclectic vibe of Brooklyn, NY. Photographed by Felicity Moments

The inspiration... "Cobblestone streets, brownstone buildings, and the historic Brooklyn bridge provided the perfect picturesque backdrop for this simple, minimalistic modern styled shoot. Inspired by the vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture anchored in the neighborhood of DUMBO, the vibe and palette of the shoot personifies the very essence of the borough. This shoot is a perfect inspiration for an intimate nuptial for a couple who love and appreciate the urban city life of Brooklyn. Hues of coral, orange, blue, yellow and red were intricately used in the florals, accessories, cake, and stationery. The bride wears a floral headpiece perfectly complimenting the Ankara pocket square worn by the groom. The couple wore traditional wedding pieces that were a great contrast to their background and surrounding areas. The second look for the bride – the jumpsuit is an expression of rebellion and freedom from the societal norms of wedding attire. Images were captured on the streets and on the Brooklyn Bridge itself overlooking the hustle and bustle of New York City." - Grace Arhin of Grace Arhin Events

The inspiration... "It all started with a sumptuous couture wedding gown! When I received it, I knew I wanted to celebrate the diversity and make a truly beautiful bridal inspiration. This is a celebration of the beauty of diversity, an Ode to elegance and happiness of a bride. French makeup artist Isabelle Boireau specializes in very natural make-up, which highlights the features of the bride instead of transforming her into a very different person. We completed the look with DellaBellaGioielli golden earrings and hair crown. Yuko from La Plume worked with a vibrant color palette to enhance the beauty of our bride Shanenn with amazing florals. Beautiful Tuilleries Garden, full of romantic alleys and 19th-century statues, were the ideal location reflecting the elegance of our bride. Respecting the French "Art de Vivre, we had a pause in a tea salon, before walking to the Royal Vendome Place." - Daria Lorman

The inspiration... "With a geometric flair and modern glam accents, this styled shoot boasts a modern transformation of the industrial and newly renovated Main Street Station Shed. My initial inspiration came from this AMAZING black dress, the Zander, from Maggie Sottero's, Sottero and Midgely Collection. I live for a bride that wants to be bold and think outside of the traditional white dress. This dress is full, glamorous, and dramatic as every bride should be on their wedding day. I chose to work with a diverse group of men and women touching on all shades of color from the Black community, because that's the client I'm diligently working to attract for my business. This black dress isn't as traditional for a black bride, but I wanted to show her how she could still be just as glam in something so bold. What inspired me initially to use Main Street Station is because it's so Richmond and one of the biggest challenges as a Richmond planner is finding a new, exciting place to host weddings that's interesting. Not interesting because it's rich in history, Victorian style furniture, or overly traditional, but something that's interesting from an architectural perspective. I love the idea of working with a clean slate but I wanted to work in this space because of its iron beams rather than the more "rustic" wooden beams I usually see in newer venues. The high ceilings, glass windows, and subtleness of the train going by were perfect accents. I chose to use design elements that were geometric to play along with metal beams in the space. From the cake, to the chargers, to the lanterns down the aisle, I wanted that to be visible through and through. We paired these geometric elements with lush florals, marble elements and rich linens. - Cierra Pope of The Hive Wedding Co.

KAHMILAH + JOSEPH EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ NOVEMBER 18, 2018 P H O TOG R A P H E D B Y N a n a A n n a n P h o t o g ra p hy

Text by Samuel Naumick

K

ahmilah and Joseph f irst crossed paths as undergraduates in college when she transferred in as the new girl on campus. With Joseph being the roommate of Kahmilah’s brother, he already had “the inside scoop.” Even though the attraction between them was evident, upon arrival and throughout college, Kahmilah and Joseph remained close friends. After graduation they would catch up over social media from time-to-time but lost touch for a few years, until a Facebook post by Kahmilah celebrating her acceptance into Veterinary school would reconnect them. Though their time in each other's lives had remained def ined by a friendship cherished by both, Joseph didn’t want to let another opportunity pass without letting Kahmilah know the truth of his heart. Initially shocked by his declaration of love, Kahmilah was relieved and excited to realize that his feelings have always matched her own. With their mutual love for each other expressed, their powerful connection picked up right where it left off, and their relationship became off icial. With both of them knowing they’d discovered a soulmate in the other, Joseph began searching for their perfect proposal opportunity. That opportunity presented itself in the form of a research trip to Belize.

After a long day of explorations, Joseph asked Kahmilah to take a sunset walk with him. Sitting down along a river at the end of their path they talked about the highlights of their day while holding each other. As the last rays of sunlight disappeared they made their way back along the trail. Noticing that Joseph wasn’t walking beside, Kahmilah turned to f ind him on one knee, where he asked her to spend the rest of their lives together as husband and wife. For Kahmilah, wedding shopping was a fun and sentimental experience, as her and her mother looked for the perfect dress. Immediately knowing the dress when she saw, Kahmilah said yes to an antique ivory ballroom gown with beaded corset and cathedral train. Following their ceremony, the Bride, Groom, and their joined family honored their West African and Jamaican heritage by changing into traditional Kente attire. With f lags in hand the dance f loor was alive with love and support as the newlyweds took their f irst steps together as a married couple. Best Memories: "One of our best memories from the wedding was def initely the f irst look!" Advice for Engaged Couples: "The day goes by really fast so focus on enjoying the company of your guests and don't sweat the small details."

ifty-eight years later June and Andrew’s love story continues just as strong as when it f irst began in

Central High School; Detroit, Michigan, 1958. Andrew fondly recalls how June “was a hall-monitor, checking to see if you had a reason to be in the hallway.” While going into his study hall class he noticed her stationed in the hall, prompting him to immediately ask for a hall pass as soon as class began. According to June, “Andrew came sashaying down the hall” where she asked him for his pass. Saying that he didn’t need a hall pass he continued on his way to the boy’s lavatory, where June followed. “Would you believe a group of boys were playing cards” she recalls when entering the lavatory. Too intimidated to report the entire group, June left them to their game. This “no-pass-forthe-bathroom” pretense went on for a while, becoming playful banter until over time a friendship developed.

Three years after their initial meeting, June gave Andrew the hall pass to her heart, when on January 15th of 1961, in her mother’s living room, they were pronounced husband and wife. The ceremony, though deeply meaningful, was all they could afford at the time. June expressed how she “had always wanted an off icial wedding with all the trimmings,
