SUMMER/HAV ISSUE 13 2020
Hello and welcome to this belated issue of Art. Firstly, our sincere thanks for picking up this free copy, inside you will find a host of talented and creative galleries, makers, artists and organisations, who keep Cornwall’s reputation as a hub for art, craft and innovation as strong as ever. Undoubtedly, the past several months have been a trying time for all as we’ve come to grips with the coronavirus outbreak and as we all do our best to adapt to a new normal, it has been truly restorative to see the lengths Cornwall’s creative communities have gone to in supporting one another. From online art classes and virtual charity exhibitions to art challenges encouraging people of all ages and skills to get creative, art in Cornwall certainly hasn’t stopped and for many, it has been a powerful outlet. In our first Art guide of 2020, we’ve taken snippets of this wonderful movement and brought it into our publication, along with a true homage to the artistic hubs across Cornwall and small businesses truly worth your time and support. Whether it’s online browsing or in-store visiting, there is something for everyone to discover in this latest edition. Plan art trails county wide, uncover new artists and makers and be enthralled by exhibitions showcasing some incredible work created during lockdown. Just as communities have demonstrated their unbreakable resilience over the last several months, we continue to champion as many local artistic establishments as possible and hope to keep Cornwall’s communities as connected and creative as ever. Oll an Gwella, (All the best)

NEW FINDS LUKE KNIGHT Rising new artist Luke Knight was raised in Cornwall, studied Fine Art at Cardiff School of Art and Design, and now works from his studio just outside Truro. Last autumn his Cornish landscape painting ‘Wish You Were Here’ won the prestigious Barcelona International Gallery Awards in Spain, a prize which includes European gallery representation and a coveted summer 2020 solo exhibition at CAGE Gallery, Barcelona. That, and his talent for creating perfectly composed, exquisitely coloured, almost blissfully beautiful landscape works makes him one of Cornwall’s hottest and most collectable new painters. www.lukeknightpaintings.com
SUE WATT Having produced an exceptional body of work during a year of study on the Porthmeor Programme at St Ives School of Painting, artist Sue Watt held her first exhibition at St Ives’ Penwith Gallery this spring. The collages, video installations and impressive large-scale paintings from her ‘Spinning on Porthmeor’ collection explore interactions between herself and her son Tom, who was born with complex disabilities, using a handmade spinner toy. This unique and deeply human subject, and her astute understanding of the emotive power of scale, shape, colour and line, make her one of the most promising new artists for 2020. www.suewatt1.co.uk

A GLIMPSE AT..... Laura Knight (4th August 1877 – 7th July 1970) A notable and historical art figure, Laura Knight’s remarkable career in what was a male-dominated art establishment made her a role model for many women artists. A painter of figurative, realist tradition and Impressionism styles, Knight was the first woman elected to full membership of the Royal Academy in 1936 and a prominent member of the Newlyn School of Painters. Primarily, she was known for her paintings that captured the world of theatre and ballet, as well as her work as a war artist during the Second World War. Laura Knight’s connection to art first took hold when she was just thirteen. Her mother, Charlotte Johnson, was a part-time tutor at the Nottingham School of Art and had managed to enrol Laura for free. At the age of just fifteen, Laura took over her mother’s teachings after Charlotte was diagnosed with cancer and sadly passed away from the illness. After leaving Nottingham School of Art, Laura continued to give private lessons. It was a difficult time, as Laura and her sister Evangeline Agnes, lived alone with very little money, their sister and both their grandmothers having also died. Laura met Harold Knight, a promising seventeen-year-old student at the School of Art whose technique inspired Laura. Their friendship would go on to blossom into a romance and they married in 1903. The couple moved to Cornwall in 1907, initially staying in Newlyn before settling in the Lamorna. During their time in Cornwall, Laura spent her summer working on the beaches at Newlyn capturing groups and individuals, exploring a more Impressionist style and working en plein air, the resulting works were great successes. Her later compositions of women, often nude, in the open air about the local coast would cause some controversy, however the landowner of Knight’s painting locations, Colonel Paynter of Boskenna, fully supported her and allowed her and many other artists to paint freely. Laura and Harold Knight’s travels and expeditions continued both throughout the UK and America, Laura working extensively within the ballet industry as an artist as well an artist intrinsically drawn to capturing humanitarian issues and everyday scenes in her unique and mesmerising style. She died in July 1970, aged 92, at London, nine years after Harold who passed in 1961.

A gallery showcasing a stunning and varied range of ceramics, St Ives Ceramics opened in 1990. Developed initially and founded by John Bedding, it was originally Bedding’s studio workshop with a small gallery space to show his own work alongside that of fellow potters he admired. At the time, ceramics were often exhibited in galleries and secondary additions and John noticed a gap in the market for a dedicated ceramics gallery that would give the craftsmanship the centre stage it deserved. The gallery now shows a varied range of high quality contemporary studio pottery alongside a valued collection of master potters of the 20th century known as the CBS Collection as well as pottery produced in Mashiko, Japan by the legendary Hamada potters. The gallery is open from 10-5pm from Tuesday to Saturday but do check online via Facebook for updates regarding their re-opening. 1 Fish Street, St Ives, TR26 1LT

EXCLUSIVE KROWJI
TRUDIE MOORE Trudie Moore’s contemporary abstract paintings explore the tension created by control and restraint and the contrast with freedom in the painting process. Her current paintings have luminous fields of colour, transparencies and opacities that act as both a visual and an actual layer over one another, and which are layers upon the surface layer of the canvas. She works in clean, bright colours and fluorescents which
allow her to achieve a fresh and pure lightness which lifts the viewer. She has fine art paintings for sale, offers commissions for your home or business and undertakes collaboration projects. 100 YEARS OF
LEACH POTTERY As 2020 marks the Leach Pottery’s 100th anniversary, we take a brief look at the history behind this world renowned and innovative studio pottery. At the heart of Leach’s provenance are its founders, Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada. Leach’s long journey to Cornwall began when he was brought to England by his great uncle to attend school in Old Windsor. Originally born in Hong Kong in 1887, his mother, Eleanor, sadly died in childbirth. For the first three years of his life, he lived in Kyoto, Japan with his father, Andrew Leach, until moving back to Hong Kong in 1890 when his father remarried. Leach left Old Windsor at aged 16, his achievements lying only in drawing, elocution and cricket. A young man, he enrolled at the Slade School of Fine Art, but found himself departing early when his father became gravely ill. In November 1904, Andrew Leach died of liver cancer. Leach moved to Manchester at aged 18, with hopes of entering the world of finances, staying with an uncle and aunt in the process. It was there Leach met and fell for his cousin, Muriel. The relationship was forbidden, and Leach soon became disenchanted with the idea of a career in finances after a brief role as a junior bank clerk. At 21, he used his inheritance to enrol at the London School of Art in Kensington, where he studied etching. During his time there, he became interested in Japan and Japanese culture as well as rekindling his romance with Muriel in 1908. In 1909, Leach returned to Japan with Muriel, where they were married shortly after. Leach was first introduced to ceramics at a Raku-yaki pottery party in 1911. Enamoured by the skill involved, Leach began learning under Urano Shigekichi, a renowned Japanese potter known by his title of Kenzan VI. Leach spent two days a week for two years studying under Kenzan VI, learning ancient and traditional ceramic skills. As he rose in the ranks of Japan’s ceramic colony, he welcomed two sons with Muriel, his second born in 1913. In 1914, Leach struck up a close friendship with Dr Alfred Westharp, a Prussian writer, and spent over a year under his influence in Peking, China. The connection caused friction between Leach and his family, especially during the birth of his daughter Eleanor in 1915. At one point, Leach moved the family to Peking in an attempt to bring his two worlds together, but his families presence caused further problems between he and Westharp. Eventually, it was fellow potter and friend Yanagi Soetsu, who would visit Leach and persuade him to return to Japan in 1916. Leach rediscovered his passion for ceramics and a renewed sense of direction with the craft. During one of Bernard Leach’s ceramic art exhibitions in Tokyo, a young Shoji Hamada, a fellow Japanese potter born in Kawasaki, was impressed by Leach’s skill and wrote to him with the hope of an introduction. By then, Bernard Leach had grown significantly in his ceramic skills and when the two met, they soon formed a good friendship. In 1919, Leach was invited by Frances Horne to return to England. Horne, a wealthy philanthropist based in Carbis Bay, was in the process of establishing a guild of crafters within the already existing art colony of St Ives and on recommendation, invited Leach to become the potter within this group. Leach, Muriel and Shoji Hamada journeyed together to St Ives, Cornwall, where they identified a suitable site where they could establish a pottery. By 1922, Leach was now a father of five, Muriel having welcomed twin daughters Ruth Jessamine and Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Massey in 1920. Shoji Hamada returned to Japan in 1923 and would go on to spend much of his life in Mashiko, which he turned into a world-renowned pottery and tourist destination. By 1924, Leach’s presence and charm saw him gain worldly and wealthy friends, such as American social activist and publisher Dorothy Payne Whitney Elmhirst, who had come to reside at Dartington Hall in Devon. The association would be vital, as Dorothy’s wealth vastly helped with developments at the pottery. Shares were issued out in 1928 and Leach went on to publish several works on the craft. After travelling during 1934, Leach left Muriel for Laurie Cookes, the pottery’s secretary and assistant hired by Leach in 1930. In 1935 they settled together in Dartington to build a new pottery. Here,
Leach would begin his most renowned published work to date, A Potter’s Book. In 1938, David Leach returned to St Ives after studying pottery management, and rehauled the Leach Pottery for a new, modern age, bringing in electricity, machinery and oil to fire the kiln. When David was called to service in World War Two in 1941, Bernard Leach returned to run the pottery. In 1944, he officially divorced Muriel, marrying Laurie Cookes shortly after. The two went on to adopt an evacuee infant, Maurice, who Laurie had taken care of during the war. Leach would go on to extensively tour Scandinavia, the USA and Japan whilst David took over the reins of the St Ives pottery. During a USA tour in 1953 with Yanagi and Shoji Hamada, Leach was introduced to his would-be third wife, Janet Darnell, a young American potter. A year after their initial meeting, Janet and Leach became an item and returned to St Ives together in 1955 as sadly, Muriel had passed away. In 1956, Leach and Laurie divorced, and he married Janet. Leach continued to produce work until 1972, at which point he began to lose his eyesight. Even then, Leach continued his worldly travels and received several high honours from both Japan and England for his contributions to ceramics. On May 6th 1979, Leach died at St Michael’s Hospital in Hayle following a heart attack in April, he was buried in Longstone Cemetery in Carbis Bay. Following Bernard’s death, Janet Leach redirected the pottery to focus on her own individual pots, bequeathing the pottery to Mary Redgrave in 199. Redgrave continued to run the pottery until her own death, after which the pottery was sold to a private buyer before its eventual acquirement by Penwith District Council as part of the Leach Restoration Project, on completion the Leach Pottery was handed over to the Bernard Leach Trust, a registered charity set up to manage the Leach Pottery. Still a working pottery today, new ceramicists still teach, train and develop their skills under the Leach roof. Leach Pottery’s exclusive 100 Year Limited Edition Range is currently being designed which will be launched later this year and will be available exclusively from the Leach Pottery. Libby Buckley, Leach Pottery Director, said, “Leach Pottery has always demonstrated resilience against an ever-changing backdrop, and has stood and survived the test of time, continually innovating and responding to challenges. And, in the determined spirit of our founders, this is how we continue to operate unabated. “As a result, we are celebrating Leach 100 in different capacities, and already we are seeing the opportunities to drive the awareness, impacts and involved numbers in some of our programme elements even further, which is extremely encouraging…” For more detailed information about the Leach Pottery, Leach 100 or any of the above elements, please visit: www.leachpottery.com or email office@leachpottery.com. CLAUDIA HOCKING
Marine life is a constant source of inspiration for Claudia: She lives on the coast and is married to a fisherman, the colour and character of the daily catch is an aspect of Cornish life that she lives and breathes. Giving new life to old surfboards destined for landfill, is a fresh concept for her art - like fish, surfboards are shaped for ease of movement through water so it seems a natural partnership to explore creatively. Using multiple layers of colour and texture, she employs original techniques to create distinctive pieces of art that make a dramatic statement as a single piece or, as a collective ‘shoal’. Examples of her work can be seen at her gallery by appointment only, or at The Beach Hut, Watergate. E: claudiahocking@mail.co.uk

Small, but perfectly formed, Lamorran Gardens is tucked away in one of South Cornwall’s most idyllic spots, overlooking St Mawes to St Anthony’s Headland. Protected from the worst of Cornwall’s frostier months, Lamorran is a haven for plants and flowers of subtropical species to flourish. The gardens four acres are covered with trees, including over 200 palm trees originating from 40 different species. Of course, one of Lamorran’s most recognisable features is its picturesque Temple, a pavilion type structure overlooking the ocean, covered by a canopy of trees and plants. Due to the location of the gardens, access can only be reached through a series of small and variously located steps, making it unsuitable for those in wheelchairs or those with limited mobility. However, the top of the gardens offers a beautiful terrace where visitors can enjoy the views with a tea or coffee. The gardens are open twice a week from the beginning of April until the end of September on Wednesdays and Fridays, from 10am to 5pm. www.lamorrangardens.co.uk

A GLIMPSE AT... William Ayerst Ingram
(27th April 1855 - 20th March 1913)
Born in Twickenham, as a young man William Ayerst Ingram initially started a career as a businessman and it wasn’t until later that he began to explore his artistic side, studying under A. W. Weedon, a landscape painter based in London, and John Steeple, also a landscape painter. He went on to set up his own studio in Chelsea and travel extensively, including several trips to Australia, and would go on to become the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists’ president in 1888. Primarily working in watercolour and oil, Ingram’s work consisted of outdoor scenes, particularly seascapes and landscapes and had a penchant for capturing tumultuous seas. In 1882, Ingram moved to Cornwall and settled in Falmouth. He soon involved himself in the Newlyn School of Art, befriending the likes of Laura and Harold Knight. In 1894, Ingram along with two fellow artists and god friends, Jack Downing and Henry Scott Tuke, established the Falmouth Art Gallery and from 1902 to 1904 he would also act as the Vice President of Falmouth’s Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society. His worldly travels often influenced his works and today collections of Ingram’s works can be found in galleries in London, Australia, New Zealand and Cornwall. Ingram would remain in Falmouth as a prominent figure of its art community, residing with his wife May Martha Fay at Tregurrian until 1911. He died at aged 57 in 1913 in Falmouth. Famous both as a source of inspiration for artists and historians alike, Prussia Cove is one of Cornwall’s most notorious former smuggling hotspots, particularly for the infamous 18th century smuggler John Carter ‘The King of Prussia’. Aside from the legendary tales, Prussia Cove is a slice of stunning natural beauty on this part of the south coast, covered with a mirage of coastal flowers. Consisting of four small coves and several cottages and houses, the area is accessed by the coastal footpath and is the perfect spot for a bit of en plein air painting and sketching.

THROUGH THE EYES OF Tony Minnion An artist and musician, Tony Minnion lives and works in Redruth, capturing the drama, power and everchanging movement of Cornwall’s landscapes. Tell us about your chosen location and why it inspires you? It’s Gooden Heane Cove, Portreath. A steep-sided cove to the east of Portreath Harbour that has a perfect curved narrow sandy beach on the north west side that very few people get down to. I’ve painted it for years from many different vantage points but never climbed down to it as I’ve always been more interested in studies from above. Describe the sounds and sights you experience in your location The continual crash of breaking waves, the gull’s cries that reach a crescendo as they all seem to kick off at once as the light begins to fade, the distant whir of returning fishing boats making their way into the harbour. What colours do you like to use when painting your location? If I look for long enough every colour I’ve ever mixed shows up at Gooden Heane Cove. On clear days the sea is often a translucent green interspersed with purple and orange brown tones from rocks and seaweed visible just beneath the surface. In the shadows the water that pools between the rocks as the tide drops shines out as a surprisingly deep golden orange. The expanses of sandstone that seem to glow in pale ochres and cadmium in the sunshine turn to deep ultramarine and crimson as the shadows are cast across them. What challenges do you face when conveying your location onto canvas? The challenge is always to be true to the more lucid and heart felt responses that I experienced on my latest visit to the cove, to articulate the extremes that I felt, the energy and intensity that this very special landscape gave to me this time around. Finally, what do you love most about your location? That this unique and magical place is only 10 minutes away from my studio.

The artist run Cowhouse Gallery has welcomed a new member to their group. Lee Stevenson creates beautiful linocuts inspired by much in the local landscape especially birdlife and the sea. Lee was born and grew up in West Cornwall. ‘I like the idea of being a part of a tradition of craftsmen with long established skills and techniques which is open to infinite interpretation. The printing process can lead to a great deal of innovation. What develops from the original idea can be quite a surprise. Accidents are often fortuitous. It is my inability to predict the final outcome that makes print-making so fascinating!’
