TRANSPORTATION AT The Beach

When bringing a group to The Beach, transportation is an important part of your experience. We know that in order to enjoy everything our 60 miles of beach and 14 unique communities have to offer, your group needs to be able to easily get to our area and have a reliable way to get around the Grand Strand once you’re here.

Flying to The Beach

Getting to the Myrtle Beach area is easy when you fly. Centrally located and close to many major accommodations and attractions, Myrtle Beach International Airport — recently named best small airport in the U.S. — is a great way to get here. You can fly to MYR on any of 9 great airline partners including:

• Allegiant

• American

• Avelo

• Delta

• Frontier

• Southwest

• Spirit

• Sun Country

• United

MYR serves as the area’s only commercial airport, though there are other local general aviation airports serving the private and corporate sectors flying to the Grand Strand. For more information, visit flymyrtlebeach.com.

Driving at The Beach

Accessibility is one of the key factors in many groups choosing the Myrtle Beach area.

Motorcoach charters and individuals can travel using both U.S. routes 17 and 501, as well as S.C. 9 that provide direct access to the Myrtle Beach area from Interstates 95 and 20.

The 28-mile-long Veterans Highway (S.C. 22) offers an additional route from U.S. 501 to S.C. 17. Carolina Bays Parkway, also known as S.C. 31, is popular with locals and extends from S.C. 9 to U.S. 501 and S.C. 707. There are future plans to extend Carolina Bays Parkway even further south.

Public Transportation

The Coast RTA public transportation service provides public, reliable and affordable bus transportation along major routes throughout the Myrtle Beach area.

Coast RTA operates a FREE Entertainment Shuttle each summer through Labor Day. The Shuttle runs every 30-35 minutes from 11 AM until 11 PM daily.

Points of interests along the Entertainment Shuttle include Broadway at the Beach, Broadway Grand Prix, Family Kingdom Amusement Park, Helicopter Adventures, Hollywood Wax Museum, Myrtle Beach Pelicans, Myrtle Waves, Ripken Experience and SkyWheel Myrtle Beach, as well as select dining, shopping and hotels.

Visit coastrta.com for more information.

Car Rentals

Rental car companies operating out of Myrtle Beach International Airport make getting to your final destination easy. Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar Rent a Car, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Hertz, National, Thrifty and U-Save Auto Rental all serve arriving visitors from the airport.

You can also find select rental companies available throughout the Myrtle Beach area.

Rideshare & Taxi Services

Uber & Lyft are available in the Grand Strand. Car services can be requested, on respective apps, via your cell phone. Download Uber or Lyft and request a driver to pick you up, much like a taxi service. All transactions are handled through the app, so you never have to exchange cash or pull out your credit card.

The Myrtle Beach area has an efficient and impressive taxi system. The numerous taxi companies each have their own phone number, but nearly all respond to a common dispatcher. This ensures visitors get where they need to go, when they need to.

Train Service

Amtrak train service is available through an in-land station in nearby Florence, SC. Passengers arriving by train may then either rent a car or board a bus to complete the remaining 60-mile trip to the Myrtle Beach area.

TESTIMONIALS

There are so many reasons a trip to The Beach is a great choice for your next event. But don’t take it from us ... check out why other planners say Myrtle Beach, South Carolina was a great experience for them:

“The Myrtle Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and Convention & Visitors Bureau, went above and beyond the call of duty to aid in the support and success of the South Atlantic Shrine Association’s Fall Festival. This year’s success could not have been achieved without their guidance and involvement and we look forward to working with their team in the future.”

“For the last 10 years I have been sending groups to Myrtle Beach. There is not another destination I work with than what these folks do. When they say “Our local experts will assist you with all your group planning needs”, they actually mean it. They make me look really good year after year. My clients think I am a genius. Little do they know it is “My Team” at the Myrtle Beach Area CVB making my trips a big hit!!!”

“All reunion and event planners are faced with a myriad of issues when trying to schedule and then execute an event such as dining venues, transportation services, cultural and non-cultural events. In many locales the planner has to do all of the legwork with little or no support from the local CVB. That is not the case in Myrtle Beach. The cooperation between the CVB and the vendors was that of a well-oiled machine.”

“Our Triple Crown staff gets fired up every year for the East Coast Summer Nationals in Myrtle Beach and North Myrtle Beach. We’ve been lucky for 25 years to get our customers on the best complexes and fields along the East Coast. Families also get to spend time on those beautiful beaches and dive into the fun diversions of the area. The team at Visit Myrtle Beach are engaged and valued partners, always going out of their way to provide the knowledge and support that creates good business and great competition.”

The heart of Garden City Beach is The Pier, a paradise for those looking to fish during the day and dance to live music at night.

Today, residents of Atlantic Beach are working to preserve their rich heritage and traditions.

LOCAL’S TIP

Fine Dining with a Twist

Try the Brentwood Restaurant where Chef Eric Masson brings fine French cuisine to Little River. The old Victorian house that the restaurant calls home is said to be haunted, with reports of broken plates and misplaced earrings.

GROUP INSPIRATION GUIDE 22

LORIS

Located in the northern end of the Myrtle Beach area and just a short drive inland, Loris began as a railroad town serving the lumber industry in the late 1880s. Loris is also the birthplace of chicken bog, a traditional southern dish consisting of rice, chicken, sausage and spices. In celebration of this scrumptious dish, the community hosts the annual Loris Bog-Off Festival each year which draws thousands to the area.

When it comes to brewing, The Beach is booming … and that’s a good thing for groups visiting our area.

The Grand Strand now offers many options to raise your spirits after your meeting, conference or sporting event. From downtown brew houses and laid-back brewpubs with lots of room for outdoor fun to craft distilleries and wineries dealing in sweet Muscadine vintages, we have a variety of ways to kick back and enjoy a few drinks with friends, family or colleagues.

LOCAL’S TIP The Beach’s Best Brews

From Wheat Ales and Beach-Themed Lagers to Pilsners, Porters and even Double IPAs, The Grand Strand has a ton of great craft brews to try. Check out our reccommendations for the best brews in town by scanning the code below:

GROUP INSPIRATION GUIDE 48

Our beer scene is led by New South Brewing, which has been in operation since 1998, distributing drinks like it’s popular White Ale, Nut Brown and IPAs from its warehouse location just a few blocks from The Beach.

Joining this long-running establishment are a number of other craft breweries which have opened since 2020, including Tidal Creek Brewhouse at The Market Common, Crooked Hammock Brewery at Barefoot Landing, Grand Strand Brewing Company in downtown Myrtle Beach and Southern Hops Brewing Co. in Murrells Inlet.

Many of these, like Crooked Hammock Brewery, offer brewery tours and tastings for groups like yours.

If wines are more your style, your group may want to explore a tour of La Belle Amie Vineyards in Little River. The Grand

Strand’s only operating vineyard and home to a variety of vintages, many made from sweet Muscadine grapes native to the region. You can also sample a variety of North and South Carolina wines with a tour of Duplin Winery’s bottling and tasting facility at Barefoot Landing.

There’s also Twelve 33 Distillery in Little River, which is the area’s only craft distillery and also offers group tours. Here, you’ll find premium handcrafted spirits in small batches using fresh, local ingredients to create uniquely Southern takes on house-made gin, vodka, rum and whiskey.

In all, there’s plenty of ways to unwind here, and we haven’t even touched the surface of our lively scene full of great nightlife, live music, wine bars and restaurants where you can sample topnotch spirits to your heart’s delight.

African American cultural sites

The Myrtle Beach area has been greatly influenced by its African American heritage and roots that date back to the 1700s. From what we eat to the way we speak, so much of who we are can be traced back to the African American history in the region.

40-acre, still evolving “living museum” and the only African American historical living farm museum in the United States.

In Myrtle Beach, Charlie’s Place is a historical site that honors the work of Charlie Fitzgerald and his wife, Sarah. The couple owned a hotel and nightclub where musicians such as Little Richard and Billie Holiday performed from the 1930s to 1960s. Fitzgerald’s home has been refurbished to an event and community center. Nearby, you can also visit the Historic Myrtle Beach Colored School Museum, a newly-restored schoolhouse that tells the story of African American education in Myrtle Beach prior to desegregation.

Brookgreen Gardens

Brookgreen Gardens sits on 9,000 acres located on the site of four former rice plantations between Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island.

In addition to the largest collection of fi gurative sculpture in the U.S., Brookgreen is also home to a Lowcountry History Center and Lowcountry Trail which tell the history of what life was like on a rice plantation.

The area offers group tours and several Gullah Geechee historical programs throughout the year.

Historic Downtown Conway

One of the oldest towns in South Carolina, Conway has all the charm and grace of a historic Southern community. Oak tree-lined streets run through the picturesque historic district, inviting visitors to stay and learn more.

Founded in 1732, many of the homes in downtown Conway are well over 100 years old. You’ll also find great historic attractions here like the 17-acre L.W. Paul Living History Farm, a tribute to

the area’s agricultural history and the Horry County Museum, filled with area historical artifacts and exhibits.

Also nearby, the Conway Riverwalk, set along the beautiful Waccamaw River, offers your group a tour of the downtown area that is beautiful in all four seasons and has plenty of nearby restaurants and shopping to explore.

Georgetown

South Carolina’s third oldest city, the historic port town of Georgetown offers visitors a glimpse into 300 years of Lowcountry history. With more than 60 structures on the National Register of Historic Places, Georgetown gracefully wears its colonial character along the live oak-lined streets, the historic homes and grand old churches.

In addition to fi ve museums, you’ll find a vibrant downtown area where your group can explore unique boutiques, waterfront dining or just stroll the Harborwalk and take in the scenery along the Winyah Bay.

Also in the Georgetown area, you’ll find Hopsewee Plantation, an historic rice plantation that offers tours and hands-on workshops to learn the art of sweetgrass basket weaving taught by a Gullah descendent, an eighth-generation weaver, named Vera Manigault.

Hobcaw Barony

Located between the Winyah Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, this 16,000-acre property is dedicated to research and education in history and ecology.

It includes buildings and sites that refl ect the lives of African Americans from the early 19th century through the first half of the 20th century.

3 QUICK DAY TRIPS FROM The Beach

With 14 unique communities to explore, including hidden gems like Conway, Pawley Island and Little River, we can’t imagine you’d need more to explore than what The Grand Strand has to offer. But for those looking for even more adventure than they can fit into 60 miles of beaches, our area also offers great proximity to some of the Carolinas’ other most visited cities.

With just a short drive, any of these great Southern gems can serve as a fun day trip while your group is visiting the Myrtle Beach area.

Charleston, S.C.

94 MILES • 2 HOUR DRIVE

A short two-hour drive south of the Myrtle Beach area will land you in Charleston. Three hundred years of rich history make Charleston a living monument to both the foundation and evolution of our nation.

Hundreds of historic and preserved structures grace the city’s narrow cobblestone streets, lined with picturesque homes. Stroll through formal gardens, enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride, participate in a ghost tour or enjoy the vibrant downtown with top-notch shopping and restaurants. However, you spend your time here, you can rest assured you’ll enjoy it.

Florence, S.C.

67 MILES • 1 HOUR, 20 MINUTE DRIVE

Located 90 minutes west of The Beach, the Florence region is packed with heritage sites worth the drive.

The S.C. Revolutionary Rivers Trail offers kayaking excursions into the cypress and tupelo-laden hiding spots of General Francis Marion, nicknamed “The Swamp Fox” by the British who couldn’t keep up with him during the Revolutionary War.

Visitors are in awe of the living artwork at The Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, designed and maintained by self-taught botanist/artist Pearl Fryar.

Florence downtown offers the new Florence Museum, live performances nearly every evening, and an array of restaurants offering dishes made with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

Wilmington, N.C.

77 MILES • 1 HOUR, 30 MINUTE DRIVE

About 90 minutes north over the North Carolina border you’ll find the port city of Wilmington and surrounding Cape Fear coastal area.

Some of this area’s many attractions include museums, historical sites, war memorials, battlefields, and more than 230 blocks of community designated as a National Register Historic District. The USS North Carolina Battleship is also a worthwhile stop, as it’s one of the most historic battleships in the nation.

Downtown you’ll find a revitalized scene of restaurants, breweries, shops and artisan galleries worth exploring.

Wilmington is also one of the nation’s top locations for film and television production and those visiting for the day will certainly enjoy taking a tour of a working film studio while there.

ENJOY The Beach SAFELY

With tens of thousands of people swimming in the ocean and pool daily during the summertime, the Myrtle Beach area has an excellent safety record. But it’s important to take proper precautions when near water. Here are a few water safety tips to make sure your visit to our many beaches, pools, and waterparks is as fun and safe as possible.

Beach Safety Tips

• Obey all beach safety flags. Flag meanings can be found on signs posted at every beach access.

• Swim in areas with a lifeguard. Listen and follow lifeguard’s directions and warnings.

• Swim with a buddy

• Swim sober

• Don’t fight the current (and signal for help!)

• Don’t float where you can’t swim

• Watch small children closely

• Don’t swim or surf within 75 yards of piers or people fishing

• Don’t dive into the surf (protect your neck!)

• Leash your boogie board or surfboard

• Ask a lifeguard about ocean water conditions

• People with open wounds or compromised immune systems should avoid public bodies of water

• Know the local rules and laws

Pool and Waterpark Safety Tips

• Watch Children - It is important to not drink alcohol, look at a phone, or nap while your children are swimming.

• Teach Kids to Swim - It is recommended that your child take swimming lessons prior to going on vacation where pools and the beach are the main attractions, even if they teach basic skills in the water.

• Use Life Jackets - Do not use air filled or foam toys, such as water wings, noodles, or inner tubes as they are not designed to keep children safe from drowning.

• Enter Water Feet First - Jumping or diving into too shallow water can cause injuries that are preventable by knowing the depth of the pool.

• Never Swim Alone - Even for confident swimmers, it is important to use a buddy system to prevent an emergency.

• Learn CPR - Everyone, regardless if you have children, should learn CPR for emergency situations.
