SSC Board of Trustees Celebrates Women’s Soccer Team Regional Title

South Suburban College (SSC) women’s soccer team was honored by the SSC Board of Trustees on Thursday, February 9, for receiving the regional title from the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA). The soccer team, coached by Jose Gonzalez, finished the 2022 season with an overall record of 13 wins, five loses and one tie. “I want to thank everyone here for all the administrative support to make something like this happen. It takes a lot as we want to ensure we run a program where students can evolve to be productive citizens. The young ladies on my team are community members, and some are children of SSC graduates,” stated Coach Gonzalez. Coach Gonzalez, current Dean at Thornwood and voted District Coach of the Year in the last two seasons, has had two Regional Players of the Year, two All-American players, and two Academic All-Americans. SSC student Amaris Gonzalez was named the United Soccer Coaches Association Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year. In addition, he has recently had two players commit to play for four-year institutions, one for Indiana University Northwest and Purdue University.

During the evening board celebration, the SSC Board of Trustees acknowledged the accomplishments of Coach Gonzalez and the entire athletic division at SSC. In an emotional statement, SSC Trustee Joseph Whittington congratulated Coach Gonzalez, “I watched him grow, and I want to let you know you have a great future. Thank you from the SSC Board of Trustees and the local community.” Later in the evening, Dr. Deborah Baness King, the SSC Vice-President of Student & Enrollment Services /Title IX Coordinator, announced that the SSC athletic division accomplished a historic feat, as all its’ sports teams have at some point won a regional championship. SSC Chairman Terry Wells continued his sentiments of the historic feat by stating that the soccer team joins other successful SSC sports teams, such as the men’s basketball and the men’s baseball teams, in successful runs. “We are really the school of champions, and it was confirmed tonight. Excellent job!” stated Chairman Wells.

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart Launches Volunteer Partnership with Paws Chicago

PAWS Chicago, the Midwest’s largest comprehensive No Kill animal welfare organization, and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart today announced a volunteer program that supports the need for more PAWS animal-handling volunteers while serving as a wellness initiative for Sheriff’s Office staff. Through the program, Sheriff’s Office employees will walk dogs and participate in cat enrichment activities at the PAWS Chicago Medical Center, the largest homeless pet hospital in the United States. The program will help PAWS Chicago meet a rising need for volunteers, because while adoptions and other animal welfare programs have now returned to pre-pandemic levels, volunteer hours have not. “We care for hundreds of pets each day, ranging from the homeless pets that receive medical care on their path to adoption to the many more that receive free and low-cost services we offer to the public,” said PAWS Chicago CEO Susanna Wickham. “A robust volunteer program is an essential part of us meeting the community’s needs, and we are still working to regain the volunteer hours we lost during the pandemic.” With over 2,000 Sheriff’s Office employees located just a mile away from the nation’s premier homeless pet hospital, the new program will support a growing need at PAWS Chicago: more volunteers to help with socialization of healing pets. It will also help animal-loving staff at the Sheriff’s Office reduce stress and decompress while giving back to the community. “We reached

out to PAWS after hearing about their recent disaster relief rescue effort, because we wanted to help those pets on their path to finding homes,” said Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart. “We quickly realized there was an opportunity to provide a much larger program and benefit to our staff and PAWS Chicago.”

The Cook County Sheriff’s Office’s first-of-its-kind customized volunteer partnership with PAWS Chicago trims the volunteer training time and focuses efforts on dog walking and cat enrichment, which are in great need at the Medical Center due to the high volume of pets served. Several employees of the Sheriff’s Office have already undergone training and begun the volunteer program, with many more expressing interest in attending orientation in the coming weeks. The PAWS Chicago Medical Center examines every animal brought to the organization and provides all necessary treatments. The facility performed over 15,000 spay and neuter operations last year and PAWS Chicago recently passed a milestone of 300,000 such procedures in its 25year history. The 30,000-square-foot hospital can house more than 200 pets, which allows PAWS Chicago to rescue pets from high-kill shelters in 13 different states, such as the rescue of 33 puppies and dogs from Houston area following a tornado that closed one Texas shelter. For information on volunteering with PAWS Chicago, email volunteers@pawschicago.org

Speaking Of Seniors

Stopped False Bill to Portage Senior

WOODROW WILCOX

On February 16, 2023, I investigated a bill that was sent to a client in Portage, Indiana. The bill was false.

The medical billing firm tried to get the senior citizen to pay the balance AFTER the insurance company of the senior had already paid the balance to the medical firm. This happens more often than you might think. If no one helps the senior who get such a false bill, the senior ends up paying the balance, too. In such a case, the medical firm gets a bonus and the senior is hurt financially.

With some editing to protect the privacy of our client, here is the letter that I sent to the medical firm.

The husband of our client brought a bill from your firm to our firm for our review. The bill is dated 02/03/2023 and seeks a balance of $65.16 on Account Number XXXXXXX for services rendered 10/03/22. The bill is false. Here is why.

I checked with our client’s Medicare supplement insurance company about this bill. That firm paid your firm the entire balance on 11/18/22 and your firm cashed the payment on 11/22/22. You got the money. Why didn’t you credit the payment correctly? Who goofed? Was it accidental or deliberate?

Don’t let fear drive investment decisions

In the past year, we’ve seen some big swings in the financial markets. This volatility may make you feel as if you have little control over your investment success. But the truth is, you do have more control than you might think — as long as you don’t let fear guide your decisions.

Investment-related fear can manifest itself in a few different ways:

• Fear of loss – Some investors may emphasize avoiding losses more than achieving gains. Consequently, they might build portfolios they consider very low in risk, possibly containing a high percentage of certificates of deposit (CDs) and U.S. Treasury securities. Yet, a highly conservative approach carries its own risk — the risk of not achieving enough growth to stay ahead of inflation, much less meet long-term goals such as a comfortable retirement. To reach these goals, you’ll want to construct a diversified portfolio containing different types of assets and investments — each of which may perform differently at different times. Your objective shouldn’t be to avoid all risk — which is impossible — but to create an investment strategy that accommodates your personal risk tolerance and time horizon.

• Fear of missing out – You’re probably familiar with the term “herd mentality” — the idea that people will follow the lead of others for fear of missing out on something. This behavior is responsible for fads or the sudden emergence of “hot” products, and it’s also relevant to investing. In fact, herd mentality may contribute to sharp jumps in the financial markets as investors drive up prices by buying stocks to avoid being left behind. And the same may be true in reverse — when the market starts dropping, skittish investors may accelerate the decline by selling stocks so they, too, can get out before it’s too late. Buying or selling investments should be considered as needed to help advance

your long-term financial strategy — not in response to what others are doing.

• Fear of the unknown – Some investors fall victim to “familiarity bias” — the tendency to invest only in what they know, such as local or domestic companies. But this behavior can lead to under-diversified portfolios. If your portfolio is dominated by just a few investments, and these investments are fairly similar to each other, you could experience some losses when the inevitable market downturn occurs. To help reduce the impact of market volatility, it’s a good idea to spread your investment dollars across large and small companies in a range of industries and geographical regions. And that’s just on the equities side — it’s also wise to consider further diversifying your portfolio by owning bonds and government securities. (Keep in mind, though, that diversification can’t guarantee profits or protect against all losses.)

• Fear of admitting failure – Some individuals don’t like to admit when they’ve been wrong about something, and they may continue the same failed activities, hoping for eventual success. This behavior can be costly in the investment arena. Sometimes, a particular investment, or even an investment strategy, just doesn’t work out, but an investor is determined to stick with it — even if it ultimately means considerable financial loss. Don’t let his happen to you — if it becomes apparent you need to change your investment approach, move on to something better.

Fear can hold us back in many walks of life — but don’t let it keep you from making appropriate investment moves.

Choosing Goals

It was paid with an EFT service called Zelis. The check or transaction number is XXXXXXXXX. Since you did not credit the payment correctly, it is obvious that your firm has a problem with your bookkeeping and communication with the firm that you use to do the billing and collecting of payments. You should investigate what went wrong and correct it.

Please, send another bill to our client that shows the bill has a balance of zero.

Our firm has no obligation to help a client with a medical bill problem. Normally, a senior with such a problem would have to hunt for help. The Medicare system is not perfect. Seniors can be hurt financially. We help all clients with such problems to demonstrate that we really do care about our clients. If your insurance agent or agency won’t help with that, why not switch to our insurance agency?

Note: Woodrow Wilcox is the senior medical bill case worker at Senior Care Insurance Services in Merrillville, Indiana. He has saved clients of that firm over three million dollars. Also, Wilcox wrote the book SOLVING MEDICARE PROBLEM$ which can be ordered through book stores or online.

What are goals? Goals are defined by Dictionary.com as the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; aim; or end. The purpose of having a goal is to guide oneself to identify the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, WHY, WHEN, WHICH, and HOW one wishes to become or to accomplish in life. By understanding and identifying these points, one can set a plan with specific steps to reach one’s goals and desires. Goals can help you plan the necessary steps to succeed with a sense of direction to lead your life. If you don’t have a plan or map, you won’t reach that treasured goal. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans” Proverbs 16:3 NIV.

Goals set the target for all your plans and actions. It is important to keep in mind that while you can strive for any ambition, the chances of success are higher if you put it down in writing, frequently review and revise it if necessary, and take appropriate action towards its fulfillment. Goal setting is a positive action with unlimited possibilities.

When you choose and establish goals, listen to your heart’s desires, passions, and interests; what is important, necessary, and drives you. Additionally, you should set goals in all aspects of your life such as physical, spiritual, financial, emotional, business/career, family, and personal. Working on more than one goal at a time is not as hard as it sounds. You don’t need to begin with large goals, small and incremental goals are just as effective.

The most achievable goals are the small “baby step” goals. Little steps lead to bigger steps. Everyone wants to be successful, however, attempting to accomplish huge goals overnight can lead to feelings of discouragement.

Establishing S.M.A.R.T. goals, an acronym for Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time-bound is a good strategy for increasing the likelihood of achieving success. Goals need to be set with as many details as possible, including the 6 W and how. Be as specific and exact as you can to what the purpose of the goal is. To track your progress toward the finish line, it must be measurable to see how close you are to achieving your goal. A goal must be attainable and not impossible or completely out of reach. It must be realistic. Is it in the realm of your capabilities?

Lastly, it must be time-bound. State a reasonable and specific amount of time for you to reach the goal. Enough to motivate you but not stress you. You need a way of accountability with concrete criteria.

Finally, to increase the chance of reaching your goals, you must be willing to take action towards them by taking a “baby step” and truly believe in their attainment. I encourage you to create two small, SMART goals in two areas of your life to be achieved in two weeks. Share with me your success and remember that it is important to have faith in your goal and to start taking the steps to reach it. Y? Why Not! ywhynotshow@gmail.com

Have you ever had to choke down a cup of something nasty?

I loved to visit my grandparents’ farm. But I dreaded breakfast. My beloved grandmother would set a cup of farmfresh milk by my plate every breakfast. Only, it was lumpy milk. Clumps of butterfat floated on the surface. I avoided that cup as long as I could until my mother inevitably gave me a look across the table and pointed emphatically at the cup. Grimacing, I tossed it back quickly, feeling the lumps slide down my throat. Ugh.

Yet that was nothing compared with the cup Jesus had to drink. Hours before his death, Jesus fell on his face in a garden and begged, “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me” (Luke 22:42a, ESV). What cup provoked such visceral horror in the heart of our Lord Jesus?

It was a cup filled to the brim with God’s wrath against our sin. “For in the hand of the LORD there is a cup with foaming wine, well mixed, and he pours out from it, and all the wicked of the earth shall drain it down to the dregs” (Psalm 75:8, ESV).

Jesus had only ever known his Father’s warmth, his smile, his affection. Yet he was about to sustain the full brunt of God’s anger against human sin on the cross. He was about to go through hell on earth. And he shrank back in horror. “Father, is there any other way for me to save lost humanity?” “No, my son,” his Father says, “this is the only way.” The son replies, “Not my will, but yours be done.” Then he rises to fulfill his horrible mission for our salvation.

Now that’s love! Stay tuned for more next week.

Emotionally Attached

When it’s time to say goodbye to a house you love… I remember being very impressed with the property on my first visit. The 100 year-old farm house shone with careful restoration and charm. The acreage that surrounded it was dotted with heirloom fruit trees and organic pathways winding through a variety of flower and veggie gardens. The owner, and mother of one of my recent clients, wanted my opinion as to its value. True comps were hard to find, but we came up with a plan for pricing. However, after a long interview, we determined she wasn’t emotionally ready to sell. Our relationship developed into a warm friendship, and two years later she finally was ready to say goodbye. Years of taking care of the house on her own (after her husband died) had taken its toll. She longed for a new vision and new adventures. It didn’t take long to get an offer, and fortunately it was a cash buyer with plenty of motivation. The couple, who owned and adjacent property, wanted to buy the house for their daughter and sonin-law. Getting a loan on the property might have been difficult. It was built on a skirted

post and pier foundation. In addition, at the time, there was no heat source to the second floor bedrooms. The process of selling was an emotional one. The property was filled with memories-her children had played in the nearby creek, her daughter’s wedding was held in one of the gardens, a dog was buried underneath a tree in the back yard. At times, it proved difficult to walk that fine line between friendship and a professional relationship. Fortunately, her son and daughter, also both excited for their mom’s freedom from the upkeep of the home, helped through the difficult moments. The children threw a birthday party for their mom, the weekend before she moved out. Guests gathered in the gardens on a warm summer day and enjoyed libations, delicious food, and shared fond stories. It was the perfect time to say goodbye to a well-loved home.

Illinois Abolishes Life Without Parole Sentences For Children; Legislators Introduce Bill To

Make Youthful Parole Retroactive

Governor JB Pritzker signed Public Act 102-1128 (House Bill 1064) into law on Friday, February 10, abolishing life without the possibility of parole sentences for children in Illinois. This makes Illinois the 26th state (plus Washington D.C.) to end the use of these sentences for people younger than 18. Illinois’ law also makes our state a leader in sentencing reform by recognizing young people’s brain development and ensuring most people 18-20 are parole-eligible. Governor Pritzker signed the measure the same week legislators introduced a bill to make youthful parole retroactive.

“This has to be my proudest professional moment. Being a former ‘juvenile lifer’ and being part of an amazing team that pushed this legislation, it is so rewarding to know that legislators understand children can change and become productive members of society,” Restore Justice Program Director Wendell Robinson said.

Public Act 102-1128 builds on the 2019 Youthful Parole Law, which created the first new parole opportunities in Illinois since our state abolished parole in 1978. The most recent law extends parole review to young people sentenced to natural life in prison; this ensures no children 17 and younger can receive a life without parole sentence.

“Today, I am proud to be an Illinoisan. In Illinois, we care about our children. Recognizing that young people can grow and change recognizes their humanity; it is an act of mercy and kindness. Thank you Governor Pritzker and the Illinois legislators on both sides of the aisle that supported it,” said Julie Anderson, Restore Justice’s Outreach Director. Anderson’s son originally received a life without parole sentence for a youthful conviction.

Public Act 102-1128 passed with bipartisan support. In the House, Representatives Rita Mayfield (D-Waukegan) and Seth Lewis (R-Bartlett) sponsored the measure. “Even when a crime is particularly severe, it should be recognized that a legal minor with their whole life still ahead has the potential to be reformed,” Representative Mayfield said. “That’s why granting eligibility for a parole hearing after 40 years for those who are sentenced to life

imprisonment before the age of 21 is the right thing to do. I recognize that victims and their families may have concerns, and I don’t blame them. However, in a nation like ours, prison should be a place where people have the opportunity to transform themselves and become better people and productive members of society. I believe that giving everyone a chance at redemption is a moral duty.”

Senate President Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) moved the measure through his chamber and also sponsored the 2019 Youthful Parole Law. “It’s a sliver of hope for an otherwise condemned person under 21 who maybe, just maybe, might redeem themself decades down the road and warrant consideration for a second chance at society,” President Harmon said after the bill passed through the Senate.

On the Senate floor, Senator Donald DeWitte (R-St. Charles) spoke forcefully in favor of redemption. “I consider myself a law-and-order Republican, but I also believe in rehabilitation. I believe there are some people who make extremely poor decisions in the very early portions of their lives who deserve consideration once they have met benchmarks and shown they are prepared to become contributing citizens after they have served their debt to society. For these people, we need to offer them hope and let them know we recognize that people can redeem themselves,” Senator DeWitte said.

“This new law builds on the national momentum to ensure no children or young adults are sentenced to die in prison without the opportunity to return home. Everyone deserves the opportunity for grace and redemption. No child should spend their life in prison,” Restore Justice Policy Director Rev. Lindsey Hammond said.

Also last week, now-Senator Seth Lewis introduced Senate Bill 2073. This bill would make the 2019 and 2023 youthful parole laws retroactive. If signed into law, SB 2073 would allow 523 people who are currently incarcerated the opportunity to immediately seek parole consideration. In total, 3,253 people (including the above 523) currently incarcerated people would be eligible for parole consideration at some future point in time.

Real Estate Questions & Answers

CATHY & JIM HIGGINS

Question: My wife and I are planning on purchasing a home. We were told a seller has to fill out a property disclosure form on the home.

My friend told us that he received a property disclosure statement saying that the roof was new, the A/C was five years old and the furnace was a year old. He was in the home three months and he had to have an HVAC company in to check out a problem with the furnace. They checked the serial number and found out the unit is over 12 years old which puts it near the end of its predictable life.

The disclosure clearly stated that the furnace was only one-year old.

What can I do to protect ourselves from this same potential problem?

Answer: You should never rely on a seller disclosure. Why? The most-honest seller on the planet may not have sufficient information or understanding to complete such a form. For instance, if a form asks “does the roof leak” it may be that to the owner the roof does not leak because he has no information to the contrary. Of course, it may also be true that the owner has never

been in the attic. The owner in this situation can honestly answer “no” because to him that’s the way it is.

Or “does the furnace work properly”? The owner says yes because he doesn’t hear any strange noises and the home heats up well. But What if there is a crack in the heat exchanger? The owner may not know about the crack, but can honestly state that the furnace does what it is supposed to do…. heat the home.

As a buyer, you want information about the condition of the property and the only way to get that information on a reliable basis is to have a professional home inspection. When you make an offer to purchase property be sure that it’s “subject to” a home inspection which is “satisfactory” to you.
