NEW

YORK, APR 4 (AGENCIES): Former President Donald Trump pleaded not guilty to 34 criminal charges against him in Manhattan criminal court Tuesday afternoon, a source familiar with the matter told CNN. The indictment against Trump has been unsealed, the source said. Trump arrived at the Manhattan district attorney’s office earlier Tuesday afternoon, where he was placed under arrest and in police custody before his upcoming arraignment. The arraignment in the Manhattan courtroom

Tuesday represents a surreal and historic moment in US history.

The indictment returned last week by a grand jury against Trump will provide the public – and Trump’s legal team – with the first details about the

specific charges he will face. The investigation stemmed from a hush money payment made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. It remains to be seen whether Trump will speak in New York. Chris Kise, one of Trump’s lawyers, said he expects the former president to speak to the cameras in the hallway outside of the courtroom before and after his arraignment, and multiple people familiar with Trump’s thinking tell CNN that he has weighed saying something while still in Manhattan.

NH, NMA, NSF & NPMHR plea on Naga issue

DIMAPUR, APR 4 (NPN): Four organisations- Naga Hoho (NH), Naga Mothers’ Association (NMA), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and Naga People’s Movement for Human Rights (NPMHR), have urged the international community to intervene in the alleged “violations of human rights in our Naga country, recognize our legitimate political, social, economic and religious rights as enshrined in the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.”

In a joint statement, the four organizations demanded that the Government of India must stop its militarisation and military operations.

They stressed that the Indo-Naga political conflict could not be solved militarily and insisted that it must be solved politically, as admitted by three Indian Army generals and others.

They demanded that the Central government must honour its words in the agreement and the IndoNaga political impasse be

resolved accordingly. On their part, they claimed that Nagas had agreed and committed to an “enduring inclusive new relationship of peaceful co-existence of the two entities” – Nagas and Indians. According to them, the Naga people are an independent indigenous nation in assertion to which a peaceful and prior informed plebiscite was conducted in 1951 that resulted in 99.9% in support of independence as declared on August 14, 1947.

Sikkim avalanche: 7 tourists killed

GANGTOK,

APR 4

(PTI): Seven tourists were killed as a massive avalanche hit East Sikkim’s Nathu La area on Tuesday morning, burying their vehicles under the snow, officials said.

The avalanche hit the arterial Jawaharlal Nehru Marg, which connects state capital Gangtok to Nathu La at the China border, around 11.30 am, trapping five-six vehicles with around 30 people under the snow, the Army said in a statement. Seven bodies were brought out of the snow and 23 people were rescued alive, including six tourists from a deep valley, a state government official said, quoting reports from the Army. Those injured were admitted to different hospitals in Gangtok, around 55 km away, he said.

India rejects China renaming places in Arunachal

NEW DELHI, APRIL 4

(IANS): A day after China renamed 11 places in Arunachal Pradesh as part of its efforts to re-emphasise its “claim” on the state, the Government on Tuesday rejected the move calling the state an “inalienable” part of India.

Official spokesperson of the External Affairs Ministry Arindam Bagchi said, “We have seen such reports. This is not the first time Ch ina has made such an attempt. We reject this outright. Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable part of India. Attempts to assign invented names will not alter this reality.” This is the third time that China has ‘renamed’ places in Arunachal Pradesh, which it calls “Zangnan, the southern part of Tibet”. The list of names released by China includes five mountain peaks, two land areas, two residential areas, and two rivers.

added. The search operation was called off in the evening due to inclement weather, another official said.

Condoling the deaths, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he hopes the injured recover soon.

“Distressed by the avalanche in Sikkim. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. I hope the injured recover soon.

Rescue ops are underway and all possible assistance is being provided to those affected,” Modi said in a tweet by his office. Union Home Minister Amit Shah said the Centre was closely monitoring the situation.

“My sincerest condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives in the tragic avalanche in Sikkim. We are closely monitoring the situation

and the teams of NDRF will reach the affected area soon. I pray for the speedy recovery of those injured,” he tweeted. Nathu La, situated at 14,450 feet above sea level, is one of the three open trading border posts between India and China. It is a major tourist destination because of its scenic beauty, and is a part of the centuries-old silk route. Several permits are required to visit the area.

The tourists were not permitted to travel beyond Milestone 13 due to inclement weather, but they forced the tour operators and the drivers to take them to the area -- between Milestones 13 and 17 -- where the avalanche struck, a police officer said. Some 350 people in 80 vehicles, stranded on the road because of the snow, were brought back to Gangtok after the snow was cleared

in the afternoon, officials said.

Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang condoled the deaths, and said that he was praying for the speedy recovery of those injured.

“My heart goes out to the bereaved family and friends in this hour of grief and I pray that the departed souls rest in eternal peace,” Tamang said.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said he was deeply distressed by the news of the avalanche and expressed grief over the loss of lives.

“My thoughts are with the victims of this terrible tragedy, and their families. Wishing all the best to the teams involved in the rescue mission,” he said in a Facebook post. Chief Minister of neighbouring West Bengal Mamata Banerjee said she was deeply pained by the tragedy.

‘Anti-Christian propaganda hit BJP poll prospects in Meghalaya’

Correspondent

SHILLONG, APR 4: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday said anti-Christian propaganda labeled by the opposition parties was one of the main reason for the poll-debacle in the just concluded Meghalaya Assembly elections.

Top BJP leaders, including party national general secretary Rituraj Sinha on Monday held an in-house meeting to analyze its poll debacle.

Unlike in Tripura and Nagaland where the BJP had pre-poll alliance with the Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura and Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party, the saffron party snapped ties with its natural ally the National People’s Party in Meghalaya and fought the assembly polls on its own.

The party despite contesting all the 60 seats eventually retained Pynthorumkhrah and South Shillong assembly seats

During this election, not just the Congress, the Trinamool Congress besides the regional parties like United Democratic Party also amplified the BJP’s anti-Christian tag.

TMC’s Derek O Brien and Mohua Mitra camped in the state during the election and met church leaders to win their confidence.

The BJP did try to counter the political propaganda with top leaders like Home Minister Amit Shah holding meetings with Christian leaders, however, these meetings turned futile.

“From time to time our national leaders, union ministers met bishops and pastors to remove the antiChristian tag,” Mawrie said.

The BJP organised 59 public meetings during the elections in which Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and several top party leaders campaigned throughout the length and breadth of this mountainous State unsuccessfully.

“Prime Minister himself was very happy with the performance and attendance of the public in the meeting. There was a huge turnout but we could not convert those into votes as people in Meghalaya did not give us the mandate,” Mawrie said Mawrie said the other factor for the BJP’s poor

performance is the disconnect of the party at the grassroots. He said the party couldn’t connect due to the pandemic and so other political parties took credit for many of the central sponsored schemes.

India, Bhutan resolve to expand already close ties

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Against the backdrop of renewed focus on the Doklam issue, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutanese King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck on Tuesday sketched a five-point broad roadmap to expand the “time-tested” relations besides delving into respective national security interests.

The talks between Modi and the visiting king took place days after Bhutan’s Prime Minister Lotay Tshering said that China has an equal say in resolving the border dispute relating to the strategically-located Doklam tri-junction.

When asked at a media briefing whether the Doklam issue figured in the talks, Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra said IndiaBhutan ties are based on mutual respect, trust, close understanding and sensitivity to each other’s concerns, adding Modi and the king covered the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation including issues of “respective national interests”. Kwatra

said the proposed rail link project between Kokrajhar (Assam) and Gelephu (Bhutan) will be expedited and that it would be the first ever rail link between the two countries.

“Besides this exemplary and unique relationship that India and Bhutan have, we also have a time-tested framework of security cooperation, and as part of that, both countries maintain a long standing tradition of very close consultations on matters relating to their mutual interests, and of course, security also,” he said reply-

ing to the Doklam issue.

“Now, in this context, the intertwined and indivisible nature of our security concerns is self-evident,” he said. Kwatra said India very closely follows all developments having a bearing on its national interest and it takes all necessary measures to safeguard them as necessary.

“As regards the recent statements and the related commentary to them is concerned, I would say that one -- India and Bhutan remain in close touch relating to our shared interests includ-

India rejects China renaming places in Arunachal

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): India on Tuesday outrightly rejected China renaming some places in Arunachal Pradesh, asserting that the state is an integral part of India and assigning “invented” names does not alter this reality.

India’s reaction came in response to Beijing announcing Chinese names for 11 more places in Arunachal Pradesh which the neighbouring country claims as

Nearly 14 lakh applications for CUET-UG

NEW DELHI, APR 4

(PTI): Nearly 14 lakh applications have been received for the Common University Entrance Test-Undergraduate (CUET-UG) this year, registering a 41 per cent increase from the debut edition last year, according to UGC Chairman, M Jagadesh Kumar.

CUET-UG remains the second largest entrance exam in the country in terms of applicants.

“In 2023 CUET-UG, a total of 16.85 lakh students registered (themselves).

Out of 16.85 lakh, 13.995 lakh paid the application fee and submitted the application form -- an increase of 4 lakh students (from last year). In 2023, there is a 41 per cent increase in the total number of students who will sit for CUET-UG,”

Kumar said.

In the debut edition of CUET-UG, 12.50 lakh students registered themselves and 9.9 lakh of them submitted their applications.

The National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate (NEET-UG) for medical admissions is the largest entrance test in India with an average of 18 lakh registrations.

The maximum number of applications for CUET-UG have been received for Delhi University, followed by Banaras Hindu University and Allahabad University.

Among the applicants, the maximum is from Uttar Pradesh, followed by Delhi and Bihar.“We have also seen an increase in the number of participating universities.

southern part of Tibet.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Arindam Bagchi said India outrightly rejected China’s renaming of the places in Arunachal Pradesh.

“We have seen such reports. This is not the first time China has made such an attempt. We reject this outright,” Bagchi said.

“Arunachal Pradesh is, has been, and will always be an integral and inalienable

ing our security interests,” he said.

“I would only reiterate our earlier statements on this issue which very explicitly and very clearly bring out our position on the determination of the trijunction boundary points,” he added.

The Doklam plateau is considered an important area for India’s strategic interest.

The Indian and Chinese armies were locked in a 73-day stand-off at the Doklam tri-junction in 2017 after China tried to extend a road in an area that Bhutan claimed belonged to it.

In October 2021, Bhutan and China signed an agreement on a “three-step roadmap” to expedite negotiations to resolve their festering boundary dispute. Bhutan shares an over 400-km-long border with China.

In a tweet, Modi described his meeting with the Bhutanese King as “warm and productive”. The prime minister also hosted a lunch for the visiting dignitary.

(PTI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the BJP of organising violence during Ram Navami processions and asserted that she would not let any rioter go scot-free and warned that strict action would be taken against “dangabaaz” (rioters).

Addressing a rally in Purba Medinipur district, Banerjee also took a dig at Union Home Minister Amit Shah without naming him and pointed out that BJP had said if it comes to power in Bihar, it would hang rioters “upside down” and wondered why such action was not being taken against “their ‘goondas’”.

Clashes were reported in Hooghly and Howrah districts during Ram Navami processions over the last few days.

“The BJP is behind the violence in Hooghly and Howrah. They had brought in hired ‘goondas’ from other states to unleash violence in Bengal, which is not in our culture. They are defaming the Hindu religion by pitting one community against another. But rioters

have no religion, they are just political goons. I appeal to everyone to maintain calm,” she said.

Taking a dig at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, without naming him, she said, “The BJP said if the party comes to power in Bihar, it would hang rioters upside down. Then why are they not doing that to their `goondas’ who are fomenting trouble in Bengal? Charity begins at home.”

Shah had made the remark during a recent public rally in Nawada district of Bihar, which has also witnessed communal clashes during Ram Navami.

Taking potshots at the CPI(M), she alleged that ‘Baam’ (Left) and ‘Ram’ (BJP) have joined hands against the TMC.

HYDERABAD, APR 4 (PTI): AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Tuesday blamed the JD(U)-RJD government in Bihar and the TMC government in West Bengal for allegedly failing to check the recent incidents of violence during Ram Navami.

He also attacked the Bihar Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister and said they failed to stop the violence despite receiving intelligence reports about the possibility of such incidents taking place.

know when and where BJP will start violence,” she said, adding that people in the “processions organised by BJP” have been found carrying weapons.

Bengal Police have arrested a man from Bihar’s Munger for allegedly carrying a gun during a Ram Navami procession in Howrah district last week, a senior officer said on Tuesday.

“He has been arrested from Bihar’s Munger. During interrogation, the youth admitted that he carried a revolver with him during the Ram Navami procession. He was seen in the video. We have handed over him to the state CID,” the officer told PTI. Banerjee said as people in Bengal didn’t take part in violence, the BJP has started bringing in people from outside the State to incite violence.

“Bengal government is making all efforts to restore the livelihood of those affected by the violence. We had recently passed a law where losses suffered during organised protests would be compensated by attaching and auctioning off the alleged vandals’ properties,” she said.

Missing the wood for trees

It is now nearly six decades since statehood yet economic progress has not moved forward in desired way and the factor responsible has been the domination of politics over economics. The changing faces of development taking place has not been lost to those in Nagaland who realise the urgent need to create the environment towards economic sustainability and progress. The fate of two million people cannot be decided by a concept that has no realistic goals for economic development, except being adept at spending billions of rupees in the name of building and construction of infrastructure. The net result is huge economic inequality between haves and haves not. Amid the emerging trend towards globalization where political barriers become redundant, Nagas also have to adopt a clear and firm economic strategy while deciding on the pathway of progress. A state having land mass of 16,579 sq.kms may have been borne out of a political necessity but it wasn’t a desert like Israel or as tiny as Sikkim(7,096 sq/kms). Today Sikkim, which became a state in 1975, is way ahead of Nagaland in many areas especially productivity in the agro-industrial field. Nagaland became a state in 1963 with an abundance of not only natural resources but tremendous human resource potential among its 16 tribes and various other communities. despite nearly 69years of statehood, Nagaland has yet to create a stable economy owing to the peculiar nature policies that is a mix of welfare-cum-private entrepreneurship. The contrast between the rural and urban is slowly giving rise to a phenomenon between the privileged, less privileged and under privileged. Social problems continue to mount as society is confronted by loss of authority by the government and existence of several parallel authorities. Thus, it may be stated that while crmes are ascending, morality is descending. Who can deny that corruption whether by politicians or bureaucrats under whatever nexus under the sky is as rampant as the fact that in the end, silence or inaction is bought with either money or threat? If those in authority claim that peace exists today, then it has a strange way of manifesting itself through various actions that have created deep concern among the law abiding citizens. Society is hurting and the environment exudes a fissiparous uncertainty which could prove disastrous in the near future. The bond of unity in truth, the first strand of Naga awareness, is being removed and replaced by tribal hegemony. These are just a few of the uncharitable facts that seem to indicate, the society in general and the government in particular, which have lost a sense of right and wrong and a responsibility to ensure continuance of a just and fearless society and of moral authority. The symptoms are indeed very serious and these would continue unless people change to make the difference. Also the challenge against social stability needs preparation by evolving a process to build the foundation such as easily available power, empowering the youth, excellent communication networks and of course, tackling lawlessness with a firm hand. Whether this will find resonance with those in power is a million dollar question.

The Way to Permanent Faith

Indeed the hour is coming…that you will be scattered… —John 16:32

Jesus was not rebuking the disciples in this passage. Their faith was real, but it was disordered and unfocused, and was not at work in the important realities of life. The disciples were scattered to their own concerns and they had interests apart from Jesus Christ. After we have the perfect relationship with God, through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit, our faith must be exercised in the realities of everyday life. We will be scattered, not into service but into the emptiness of our lives where we will see ruin and barrenness, to know what internal death to God’s blessings means. Are we prepared for this? It is certainly not of our own choosing, but God engineers our circumstances to take us there. Until we have been through that experience, our faith is sustained only by feelings and by blessings. But once we get there, no matter where God may place us or what inner emptiness we experience, we can praise God that all is well. That is what is meant by faith being exercised in the realities of life.

“…you…will leave Me alone.” Have we been scattered and have we left Jesus alone by not seeing His providential care for us? Do we not see God at work in our circumstances? Dark times are allowed and come to us through the sovereignty of God. Are we prepared to let God do what He wants with us? Are we prepared to be separated from the outward, evident blessings of God?

Until Jesus Christ is truly our Lord, we each have goals of our own which we serve. Our faith is real, but it is not yet permanent. And God is never in a hurry. If we are willing to wait, we will see God pointing out that we have been interested only in His blessings, instead of in God Himself. The sense of God’s blessings is fundamental.

“…be of good cheer, I have overcome the world” (John 16:33). Unyielding spiritual fortitude is what we need.

At the outset, the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) welcomes you to Nagaland, while rejecting and condemning India’s showcasing Nagaland as part of India. Nagaland went through aggression by India in 1955. Since then Nagaland has been under forced Indian occupation. Given below is an overview of the genesis and chronology of the independent history of Nagaland.

1. Nagas are not Indians and Naga territories are not Indian territories. In the pre-colonial era, these two entities had no connections whatsoever. The colonial rule in South East Asia exposed Nagas to Indians and vice versa.

2. Based on that historical fact, the Nagas submitted a memorandum to the Statutory Commission for India headed by John Simon (Simon Commission) in 1929 by the Naga Club. The memorandum rejected the new reformed scheme for India and asserted for pre-colonial independent status as our future.

3. The Naga National Council (NNC), (the lone authentic Naga political institution established on February 2, 1946), declared the independence of Nagaland on 14th August 1947, a day ahead of India’s independence. The formal declaration was necessitated to assert our position as an independent entity, entirely separate from India and Burma (Myanmar).

4. The NNC conducted a national plebiscite on May 16, 1951. The result was a resounding 99.9% to remain independent. This plebiscite ratified the independence declaration.

5. The Nagas under the leadership and guidance of NNC rejected the republic of India’s first parliamentary election held in 1952. No Naga cast his/her vote as the Nagas were not Indian electorates.

Even in 1957, the republic of India made another desperate attempt to impose her election on Nagas, but Nagas rejected again.

6. The Government of India having failed to apply her constitutional machinery in the form of election for two successive times had concluded that the Nagas could not be subdued by imposing its Constitution, thereby India resorted to military aggression. And the aggression started in 1954 and it turned into total onslaught by 1955.

7. In order to defend the sovereignty of Nagaland from aggression, the NNC established the Federal Government of Nagaland on March 22, 1956. An undeclared war ensued between India and Nagaland. The Indian military atrocities caused much sufferings beyond human imagination. Several draconian laws were imposed in Naga territories of which, the Armed Forces (Special) Powers Act, 1958 (AFSPA) is still in operation in some parts of Naga territories.

8. In 1960, the Government of India signed a Sixteen Point Agreement with some self-representing non-players under the name, the Naga People’s Convention. This political agreement was signed on the pretext of ending human sufferings on both sides. In reality, the agreement was the best instrument to cover the Indian war crimes on Nagas. The agreement begets the puppet state of Nagaland in the Union of India. The Federal government of Nagaland had nothing to do with the creation of the state and its puppet state government.

9. The creation of the state of Nagaland failed to end the war with the Nagas. Thereby, on September 6, 1964, the Government of India (G01) and the Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN)

signed the Ceasefire agreement as equals regardless of size. By universal convention, it nullified the so-called Sixteen Point agreement and its by¬product, the state of Nagaland in the Union of India.

Since 1964, the Federal Government of Nagaland has honored the peace agreement and pursuing the Indo¬Naga conflict peacefully in consonance with NNC’s nonviolence policy. Regrettably, the Gol has not withdrawn her military from Nagaland

10. The host of B-20 delegates of G20 member countries summit in Kohima is the puppet state government of India. The name of our country ‘NAGALAND’ was coined by the NNC under the legendary leadership of the then NNC President, A. Z. Phizo. Whereas, the signatories of the sixteen point agreement robbed the name to confuse the world

11. Nagaland is under Indian occupation. It has no freedom of its own. Nagas have no liberty to develop Nagaland according to our own genius.

12. The Federal government of Nagaland takes this opportunity to tell Nagaland’s suffering under forced occupation to G20 member countries. Everything is not what seems to be. The FGN has been working in every way possible to free Nagaland from forced occupation by India and Myanmar. The FGN appeals to the G20 member countries to prevail upon the Indian government for withdrawal of her armed forces and its administration from Nagaland. So that, the Nagas can shape their own future and develop its country in its own way.

KUKNALIM.

The Naga People are an independent indigenous Nation in assertion to which a peaceful and prior informed Plebiscite was conducted in 1951 that resulted in 99.9% in support of our independent status as declared on the 14th of August 1947.

The Indian armed forces have been occupying our land ever since its military aggression in 1954. Our Nation is militarized and subjected to political and social suppression and most dehumanizing oppression. Left with no option but to defend our political, social, religious and economic rights, we have resorted to confront and resist the occupational military forces of India and Burma. This war has ever since continued in the midst of two “Ceasefire”.

We are subjected to live in constant fear and trauma, which is a never ending-nightmare. Our homes and granaries are vandalized and burned. The armed forces occupy our crop fields, schools, hospitals and make them their camps. Our Churches are desecrated and have been made concentration camps. Our women and daughters are molested and raped. Our wives and daughters are subjected to give birth in public.

Mr. Boutros Boutros

Ghali, the former Secretary General, United Nations, while still holding the Office, had officially acknowledged these violence, destruction, pain and untold sufferings of the Nagas by observing that “there is human rights situation in Nagaland”. Nagas are peace-loving and most humane people with great respect for peaceful coexistence and we courageously defend our dignity as we respect and uphold the dignity of all people exhibited by our great

hospitality.

An open letter to B20 delegates from G20 member countries A joint political statement

A political dialogue following the Cease Fire Agreement, 1997, is in place and a Framework Agreement, 2015, has been signed by the representatives of the Government of India and the Naga People as the basis to work out the political agreement to resolve the armed confrontation. Although a decade shy of two years is nearly passed, yet the political resoluteness and honorable approach and guarantee on the part of the Government of India remains a dangerous doubt. We implore upon the International Community to humanly intervene in the violations of human rights in our Naga country, recognize our legitimate political, social, economic and religious rights as enshrined in the United Nations’ Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People.

The Government of India must stop its militarization and military operations. The IndoNaga political conflict cannot be solved militarily and must be solved politically, as admitted by no less than three Indian Army Generals and others.

The Government of India must ho nor its word in the Agreement and the Indo-Naga political impasse must be resolved accordingly.

On our part, Nagas have agreed and committed to an “enduring inclusive new relationship of peaceful co-existence of the two entities” – between Nagas and Indians.

The Nagaland liquor total prohibition act and G-20

Nagaland Baptist Church Council is not the guardian of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act (NLTP-Act) which received the accent of the Governor on the 13th April 1990 as published in the gazette of Nagaland Vide Notification No. Law Act/4/89 dated 24. .4.1990.

The preface noted that the Act “Totally prohibit possession, sale, consumption and manufacture of liquor in and import and export thereof in the State of Nagaland.

The Act has been in the cold storage for three decades over. To say the least, it has never been systematically implemented. The Act has been defined as a failure even before the implementation because there is a lack of will power coupled with half hearted approach of the government. The government has been testing the water for the last few years. In the midst of lobbying and consultations, the church has stood her ground because she knew pretty the destruction it has caused our society. May it be known that liquor in our land is a cursed commodity.

The NLTP-Act is bought with much sacrifice and with the help of God. The Act has never been implemented nor revised with the passage of time.

The NLTP Act has provision in different category for supervise relaxation and here I quote two of the related clauses and to point out that if this provision do not come under strict control of the government and the implementing body/agency, hotels and restaurants will become den of alcohol busy.

A week before the arrival of the G-20 honored guests to our land, the Chief Minister on March 27, 2023 proposed to allow sale of liquor to foreign nationals coming to the state which, he said is permitted within the ambit of Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition (NLTP) Act, 1989, by certain hotels of star category (Eastern Mirror, March 27, 2023). The reason given, because “Our State will be

hosting a large number of foreign delegates for the G-20 business meet from 4th -6th April ….” This comes from clause 16 of the NLTP Act, p. 8.

Besides clause 8, clauses 9-14 also provide provisions in different categories one of such is clause 14 which states,”Not withstanding anything herein before contained, the State Government may prescribe the conditions under which permits may be issued for possession, use or consumption of liquor on health ground by a registered medical practitioner (p. 7).

Even though the Act says “Total Prohibition” it actually is not total. There are provisions where the Act states regulated use in different categories. The provisions stated in the Act permits the government and the individuals to use and obtain legally. Nevertheless, since the Act was not systematically enforced and the public were not educated, theywere misled and the blame game started. This lackadaisical attitude led some to gain in an unfair means. The spurious liquor, black market and bootlegging are some clear examples of the outcome. Therefore, the problem is not the prohibition but lack of will power and determination in implementing the Act.

When the Act is not implemented every legal provision becomes a suspect. One of such is making liquor available during the G-20 summit. One can see the opportunity of misusing the provision because there will certainly be no supervision. There is every chance that the star hotels and restaurants will become den of liquor shop.

Lest we forget, Nagaland has a long history of bringing the NLTP Act to black and white. The movement began in in the early 1960s wherein, the church, and the civil society fought for almost three decades and finally NLTP Act came into being in 1989. In the 70s and the

80s, the Nagaland Baptist Church Council and the Naga Mothers Association spearheaded the movement, supported by the civil society organizations. This they did because they saw the evil of liquor in our society and what it has done to the generation then. In the 80s, the movement became more pressed, aggressive and urgent that the last resort was to “Fast unto Death.” This, they did because they saw the ravaging effect of liquor in the society was going to the point of no return. They were serious because they love the people and want to see their children grow up free from indulging in something which resulted to broken homes, destroying the moral NLTP-Act has its own history. And we must not forget that the Act is bought with much sacrifice. Liquor is a cursed element in our society and we must not allow the evils of alcohol resurrect. We must deal with it with resolute will power. Legalization may generate revenue but a commodity which has the curse of the people will never take us forward. We are all aware that Nagaland is a revenue starved State but to imagine that the sell of liquor will rescue the State is senseless.

Listen to the tone of a letter addressed to the Chief Minister through Excise minister on April 17, 1974 speaks volume of how distressful the church became on hearing the authority trying to please people for their loyalty to the party.

“We are greatly alarmed to learn that you and your Government are planning to renew the WineShop Licenses granted by the government as a special favour to those people for the loyalty to the party. If this true, this plan of yours will cause great resentment and alarm among the churches and their leaders throughout Nagaland, and there is bound to be serious repercussions all over the land. If this should happen, this will lead our people, who have been so earnestly praying for you

and your Government, to lose their confidence in your leadership.” Today we still carry the same sentimen t and our message to people in the authority will be no less different. Our prayer is that the authority will listen to the church and above everything, listen to God for the sake of our people. Implement the Act and let us help each other. The government has the Act, you have the legislative power. The church has the man power and God to help us overcome if that is, we are sincere. For once, let us stop testing the water because by doing so, you are testing God.

G-20 is a respectable and honorable body. We must feel privileged and honored to be given the chance to host the summit. Allow them to get God’s blessing and host them well but not with a prohibited commodity. Allow them to accomplish their task

1) Green Development, Climate Finance &LiFE,

2) Accelerated, Inclusive & Resilient Growth, 3) Accelerating Progress on SDGs, 4) Technological Transformation & Digital Public Infrastructure, 5) Multilateral Institutions for the 21st century, 6) Women-led Development.

Let us keep this in perspective. Whatever is done must be objective, rational and not be antagonistic.

• It must honor God and put the welfare of the commoners in perspective.

• Who are the people who will gain and the section of people who will loss must be specified.

• Our children and the generations to come must be projected. We must seek the wisdom to see the unseen.

• If with the Act we are failing, we know very well what will happen if a pinhole passage is opened. It will only make matter worse.

• If with the Act there are loopholes, common sense will tell us what is waiting once we let go of the Act.

• We know what our children will inherit and the cycle will continue.

• At the end who will be blamed?

Therefore, The Nagaland Baptist Church Council, comprising of 21 Associations and 4 Associate members with 1724 churches stand against serving or making alcohol avail-

able to the G-20 honored guests. Further, who urge the government to implement the NLTP Act with the will power and resolute decision. May God bless our guests and our government and the leadership. Rev. Dr.ZelhouKeyho, General Secretary, NBCC

Perils of Tourism related pollution

Sir, As an industry prone to overconsumption, tourism also generates a significant amount of waste and pollution. Tourists can generate up to twice as much waste as locals in some areas. This can put a tremendous strain on local waste management systems, causing landfills and sewage treatment plants to overflow. Another major issue is tourists, hotels, cruise ships, and others, improperly disposing of trash, raw sewage, and toxic chemicals. In addition to making destinations less appealing, litter and pollution can harm local residents and wildlife. While tourism contributes to our global waste problem, it can also help to solve it. Tourism has the potential to raise awareness of the issues as well as spur waste infrastructure improvements. If we want to preserve the beauty and health of the places we visit, we must take action to reduce the amount of waste we create and practice proper disposal.Certain types of waste issues are more prevalent in tourism and pose a challenge for destinations to manage.Tourism generates a large amount of single-use plastic waste which poses a problem for local disposal systems and environments.

An often overlooked type of waste, food waste is particularly a problem within the tourism and hospitality industry.Improper disposal of sewage and other toxic chemicals by the tourism industry pollutes our waterways and seas.Air travel and other travel activities generate carbon emissions and contribute to global climate change. Waste and pollution have far-reaching impacts on environments, wildlife, visitors, and communities.Litter along coasts transforms beaches into less desirable destinations and may wash out to sea.Sea debris and untreated sewage pose a grave threat to marine animals who may get entangled, sick, or die.Pollution can have serious health effects and diminish the quality of life of local residents. Trash that is left behind in parks and along trails detracts from the natural beauty of scenic areas.

Contaminated freshwater can cause health problems, poison wildlife, and throw off ecosystem balance. Government should help destinations to manage waste and to create cleaner and healthier environments for residents and visitors alike. They also should inspire individuals to adopt eco-friendly travel habits that create less waste and to dispose of their garbage properly so that they leave no trace.Government should develop citizen science tool that will empower travelers and locals to contribute to conservation by reporting the marine pollution they see.

Three students drown in Odisha river

BHADRAK (ODISHA), APR 4 (PTI):

Three college students drowned in Nalia river in Odisha’s Bhadrak district on Tuesday, while two others were rescued, police said. The five youths from two nearby villages had gone to the river to bathe near Haripur village and were swept away by the current, the police said. Villagers who were on the river bank saw two of them striving to stay afloat and jumped in to save their lives. They pulled out all five of them and rushed them to the Bhadrak district hospital, where doctors declared three of them dead.

ASI kills self after

gunning down wife, son, pet dog

CHANDIGARH, APR 4 (PTI): An assistant subinspector of police on Tuesday allegedly killed himself with his service weapon after shooting his wife, son and a pet dog dead in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, officials said. After killing his family members, the officer had even abducted a woman at gunpoint while fleeing to Batala, they said, adding that though police managed to rescue her, the cop allegedly shot himself at a house in Batala. It is yet to be ascertained what prompted the ASI to kill his wife and son, the police officials said, adding that they were investigating the matter.

Singh took the woman to a house in Batala, 35 km away from his village in Gurdaspur. Police then launched an operation to free the hostage.

Need for integrated effort on disasters: PM

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday underlined the need for an integrated response to disasters, saying disaster in one region can have a big impact on a completely different region in a closely connected world.

In his video address at the fifth International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure 2023, he noted that 40 countries have become part of the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) in a few years.

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina also delivered a video message.

The conference has become an important platform for advanced and developing economies, large and small countries, and the global north and global south to come together on one platform, Modi said.

He said infrastructure is not merely about returns, but also about reach and resilience.

Infrastructure should leave none behind and serve people, including in times of crisis, he added, stressing

on having a holistic view of infrastructure.

Social and digital infrastructure is as important as transport infrastructure, he said. ‘Resilient and Inclusive Infrastructure’ is the theme of this year’s conference. Recent disasters are a reminder of the scale of challenges facing the world, Modi said while noting the incidents of heat wave which had hit India and Europe, cyclones and also recent earthquake in Turkiye and Syria. The CDRI arose from a global vision that in a closely connected world, the impact of disasters will not just be local, he said.

It is encouraging that apart from governments,

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (PTI): Rahul Gandhi’s counter to a journalist “why do you always say what BJP is saying” after he was asked about the ruling party’s criticism of the Congress leader, evoked a sharp reaction on Tuesday from the BJP which accused him of “attacking” the media again.

The former Congress president, who was walking into the Congress headquarters here, was asked about the BJP’s allegation that he tried to pressure the judiciary after he was joined by a large number of party leaders and workers while filing an appeal in a Surat court against his conviction in a defamation case on Monday.

Gandhi walked back to the media posse and asked, “Why do you always

global institutions, private sectors and domain experts are also involved in it, he said.

Along with quick relief, the prime minister emphasised on the need to focus on early restoration of normalcy during disasters.

“Resilience is built in the times between one disaster and another. Studying past disasters and learning lessons from them is the way,” he added.

Underlining the intelligent use of local knowledge for building infrastructure that can withstand disasters, he said modern technology with local insights can be great for resilience. Further, if documented well, local knowledge may become the global best practice, he added.

Noting the inclusive intent of some of the CDRI initiatives, he mentioned the Infrastructure for Resilient Island States (IRIS) benefitting many island nations.

The 50 million dollar Infrastructure Resilience Accelerator Fund has generated immense interest among developing nations.

“The commitment of fi -

nancial resources is key to the success of initiatives,” he said.

Modi asserted that India is bringing the world together this year through its ongoing G20 presidency, and said the CDRI has been included in many working groups of the elite body.

“The solutions you explore here will receive attention at the highest levels of global policy-making,” he added.

According to a CDRI statement, in her address Prime Minister Hasina said, “Since origins of climate change are global, the solution and management would also have to be global. Only if the global efforts and individual countries’ efforts are streamlined through responsive policy, planning and governance, the actions are likely to be successful”.

She said Bangladesh was ready to join any initiative at a regional or global level dealing with the impacts of climate change. Hasina also called for coordinated global efforts and shared vision for climate adaptation mitigation and resilient infrastructure.

Uddhav dubs Fadnavis a ‘worthless’ home minister, seeks resignation

THANE, APR 4 (PTI): Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray on Tuesday dubbed Maharashtra deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis a “worthless” home minister after a woman worker from the Thackeray-led faction was allegedly attacked by activists of rival Shiv Sena, and sought his resignation.

Fadnavis hit back, saying Thackeray was a “weak” chief minister who had sacrificed his ideology for the sake of power and need not be given importance.

Thackeray, his wife Rashmi, and son Aaditya Thackeray met the injured woman at a hospital in Thane city, the bastion of his bete noire Eknath Shinde who toppled the MVA government last June to become the chief minister by joining hands with BJP.

Talking to reporters, Thackeray said the woman party worker was kicked in her stomach despite her pleading that she was un-

dergoing fertility treatment.

“Maharashtra has got a worthless home minister. A helpless and servile man is the home minister here. He was not ready to act when his own party men were attacked by the ‘Mindhe’ (a term Thackeray’s party uses for Chief Minister Eknath Shinde) group.

“Should one call him (Shinde) the chief minister or a goonda mantri? I am not saying that, but people will decide. They should have a minister in charge of the goonda department when they expand their cabinet,” Thackeray said.

He said the state home

minister should resign immediately and also targeted the Thane police commissioner calling him “useless” for allegedly not acting against those who attacked Shiv Sena (UBT) workers. Thackeray said Shiv Sainiks and the common people are capable of uprooting the BJP-Shiv Sena combine from Thane.

Speaking in Nagpur, Fadnavis said Thackeray was a “weak” chief minister who couldn’t ask two ministers in his cabinet who were jailed to resign, an apparent reference to Anil Deshmukh and Nawab Malik (both NCP MLAs).

say what BJP is saying? Every time you say what BJP is saying.”

“There is a very simple thing.

Who owns the Rs 20,000 cr in Adani ji’s shell companies? It is ‘benami’. Who owns it,” Gandhi said, reiterating his allegations. In a tweet later, Gandhi

questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “silence” and asked why is he “frightened”.’ Targeting him, the BJP said that “insulting the country’s backward classes and the media is Rahul Gandhi’s mindset” and called him an “arrogant dynast”.

“Rahul Gandhi has again attacked the fourth pillar of democracy. Insulting the country’s backward classes and the media is Rahul Gandhi’s mindset.

“He is following in the footsteps of his grandmother with his audacity to frequently attack the country’s democratic system,” BJP’s chief spokesperson and Rajya Sabha member Anil Baluni tweeted.

Suisse head apologises for ‘loss of trust’

ZURICH, APR 4 (REUTERS): Credit Suisse’s chairman apologised for taking the Swiss bank to the brink of bankruptcy, as he faced shareholder fury over the demise of the once proud flagship. The hastily arranged takeover by Zurich-based UBS, for which Switzerland invoked emergency legislation, bypassed Credit Suisse shareholders, who would otherwise have had a say, and all but wiped them out. Its final meeting of shareholders on Tuesday marks an ignominious end to the 167-year-old bank founded by Alfred Escher, a Swiss magnate affectionately dubbed King Alfred I, who helped to build the country’s railways and then the bank.

Protesters gathered outside the concert venue where the meeting took place, with some erecting a capsized boat to depict the bank’s demise. Inside, chairman Axel Lehmann issued an apology, saying he had run out of time to turn the bank around, despite his

belief “until the beginning of the fateful week” that the it could survive. “I am truly sorry,” said Lehmann. “I apologise that we were no longer able to stem the loss of trust.”

After years of scandal and losses, Credit Suisse came to the brink of collapse before UBS rode to the rescue with a merger engineered and bankrolled by the Swiss authorities. “Until the end, we fought hard to find a solution. But ultimately, there were only two options: deal or bankruptcy. The merger had to go through,” said Lehmann.

He added that five board members would not stand for re-election. Shareholder advisory firm Ethos decried the “greed and incompetence of its managers” as well as pay that reached “unimaginable heights”, as it prepared to challenge top executives at the meeting.

“Shareholders have lost considerable amounts of money and thousands of jobs are on the line,” it said.

The meeting is the first time that Chairman Lehmann and Chief Executive Ulrich Koerner publicly addressed shareholders since the takeover. Credit Suisse

Tax rule recap: Some key changes have come into effect

NEW DELHI, APR 4

(IANS): With the new financial year 2023-24 having begun from April 1, several tax rule changes have come into effect.

Let’s have a look at some changes here:

The new income tax regime has become the default regime from April 1 onwards.

However, taxpayers have the option of choosing between the old and new tax regimes. The new tax regime’s standard deduction for taxable income exceeding Rs 15.5 lakh is Rs 52,500.

Tax rebate limit has been raised to Rs 7 lakh.

Raising the tax rebate limit to Rs 7 lakh from Rs 5 lakh means that the person whose income is less than Rs 7 lakh, need not invest any-

thing to claim exemptions and the entire income would be tax-free irrespective of the quantum of investment made by such an individual.

However, there’s no change in standard deduction of Rs 50,000 provided to employees under the old tax regime. Changes effected in the new tax regime are: Rs 0-3 lakh - nil. Rs 3-6 lakh5%. Rs 6-9 lakh - 10 %. Rs 9-12 lakh - 15%. Rs 12-15 lakh - 20%. More than Rs 15 lakh - 30%.

The leave encashment for non government employees has been exempted up to a certain limit. This limit was Rs 3 lakh since 2002, which now has been raised to Rs 25 lakh.

From April 1, investments in debt mutual funds have become taxable. They will be taxed as short-term

had been attempting to put the past behind it and restructure, before a shock triggered by the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank in the U.S. sent it into a spiral. After a run on deposits, the Swiss government turned to UBS, which agreed to buy Credit Suisse for 3 billion Swiss francs ($3.3 billion), a fraction of its earlier market value.

The move angered not only shareholders but many in Switzerland. A survey by political research firm gfs. bern found a majority of Swiss did not support the deal. “The government’s use of emergency powers to push this deal through goes beyond legal and democratic norms,” said Dominik Gross of the Swiss Alliance of Development Organisations.

“Swiss taxpayers too are on the hook for billions of francs of junk investments and yet the government, (regulator) FINMA and the central bank have given little explanation about the state’s 9 billion (franc) loss guarantee to UBS.”

capital gains now. This would mean that investors won’t be able to avail longterm tax gain benefits from these types of investments.

Even investment in Market Linked Debentures (MLDs) from April 1 onwards have become short term capital assets. Proceeds from life insurance premium over the annual premium of Rs 5 lakh have become taxable from April 1 onwards.

The maximum deposit limit for senior citizen savings schemes has been increased to Rs 30 lakh from Rs 15 lakh from 2023-24 onwards.

The maximum deposit limit for monthly income schemes has also been increased to Rs 9 lakh from Rs 4.5 lakh for single accounts, and Rs 15 lakh from Rs 7.5 lakh for joint accounts.

India auto industry to log single digit growth in FY24

CHENNAI, APR 4 (IANS):

The Indian automobile industry in fiscal 2023-24 is expected to see a single digit growth after closing the FY23 with double digit growth, said Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA).

As the high-growth period has now passed, FY’24 is expected to see tapered growth in the low single digits due to a high base, inflationary pressures, routine price hikes, and regulatory changes, FADA said.

Additionally, for the third consecutive month, US Government agencies have warned of the possibility of El NiAo’s arrival later this year, which could lead to poor monsoons, hampering rural India’s growth potential.

According to FADE, the untimely rains and hailstorms in North and Central India have destroyed key rabi crops and delayed harvesting, which will have a negative impact on rural

A delegate from the Icelandic Business Council said he was looking forward for possible collaboration in art, culture, tradition and technology. Pointing out that those were the possible avenues for collaboration, he expressed the hope that the State would be able to exploit its potential.

A delegate from Canada expressed his country’s desire to invest in the State’s renewable energy sector. He however mentioned that his interest had sifted to tourism and textile industry after only a few minutes of being in the State and appreciated the traditional welcome.

Most delegates expressed their desire to

invest and get involved in sectors such as tourism, technology and agri and allied sector. They also acknowledged the warmth and hospitality of Nagas.

They also expressed their willingness to visit the State again as tourists and not as business delegates, while appreciating the scenic beauty and colourful tradition of Nagas.

It has been learnt that around eight VVIPs had arrived during the day, even as many foreign delegates cancelled their trip.

Meanwhile, it was reported that several student leaders held a brief demonstration near Chathe bridge (Kohima road) holding a banner to draw the attention of the G20 delegates, that arrived on Tuesday, on their way to Kohima.

sales. The year will also witness high electric vehicle (EV) penetration which will eat into the internal combustion engine (ICE) market share.

“Overall, FY’24 will be a year of consolidation for the India Auto Retail Industry with an overall single digit growth over previous year,” FADA said. Looking back at the fiscal that went by FADA President, Manish Raj Singhania said, “FY23 was the first full year without any impact of Covid after a gap of two years. Consequently, overall retail sales during the year experienced double-digit growth of 21 per cent. Similarly, all categories except for tractors saw double-digit growth, with two-wheelers, three-wheelers, passenger

vehicles, and commercial vehicles growing by 19 per cent, 84 per cent, 23 per cent, and 33 per cent, respectively. Tractors, however, only grew by 8 per cent.”

The two-wheeler segment fell to seven years low with total retails of 15.9 million during the year. EV penetration in this category during the year was at 4.5 per cent. The three-wheeler category maintained its impressive growth rate of 84 per cent year over year. Electrification in this category reached 52 per cent, primarily driven by the e-rickshaw segment. The availability of finance, along with the availability of alternative fuels and state subsidies, has contributed to the growth of this segment.

Singhania said the retail sales of passenger vehicles reached a record high of 3.6 million vehicles, growing 23 per cent YoY. The previous high was in FY’19 when retail sales were 3.2 million vehicles.

Govt removes windfall tax on crude oil production, cuts for diesel

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (IANS): The Central government has slashed windfall tax on crude oil production to zero from Rs 3,500 rupees per tonne, which became effective from today, according to an official notification. The windfall tax on diesel has been slashed to Rs 0.5 per litre from Rs 1 per litre earlier.

There is no windfall tax on petroleum and jet fuel or aviation turbine fuel (ATF).

Windfall tax is levied by government on unexpectedly high profits earned by companies.

It was levied in July 2022 as high energy prices had led to high profits for oil producers. Since then, windfall taxes for crude oil have

declined from Rs 23,250 per tonne in July 2022 to Rs 3,500 per tonne as of March 21 this year.

Senior IS commander killed in Syria: US military BEIRUT, APR 4 (AP): A drone strike carried out by the American-led coalition in northwestern Syria has killed a senior member of the Islamic State group who was in charge of planning attacks in Europe, the United States military said Tuesday.

The man killed Monday in the strike was identified by a U.S. military statement as Khalid Aydd Ahmad al-Jabouri.

The military statement added that his death “will temporarily disrupt the organization’s ability to plot external attacks.”

Monday’s strike was the latest by the U.S. military to kill a top official with the extremist group that once controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria, where it declared a “caliphate.”

Finland joins NATO, dealing blow to Russia for Ukraine war

BRUSSELS, APR 4 (AP)

Finland joined the NATO military alliance Tuesday, dealing a major blow to Russia with a historic realignment of the continent triggered by Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

The Nordic country’s membership doubles Russia’s border with the world’s biggest security alliance and represents a major change in Europe’s security landscape: The nation adopted neutrality after its defeat by the Soviets in World War II. But its leaders signalled they wanted to join the alliance just months after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine sent a shiver of fear through Moscow’s neighbours.

The move is a strategic and political blow to Putin, who has long complained about NATO’s expansion

EU lashes out at China for support of Russia in Ukraine war

BRUSSELS, APR 4 (AP):

invasion of Ukraine last year, Finland, which shares a 1,340 kilometre (832 mile) border with Russia, applied to join in May, setting aside years of military non-alignment to seek protection under the organisation’s security umbrella.

On the eve of a major European Union diplomatic foray into China, the bloc’s foreign policy chief on Tuesday lashed out at Beijing for its support of Russia amid the invasion of Ukraine, and called it “a blatant violation” of its United Nations commitments.

“There cannot be siding with the aggressor,” Jo-

sep Borrell said ahead of a trip to Beijing by the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron. “There is a clear expectation from a permanent member of the UNSC to stand up in defense of international rules-based order and China as a moral duty to contribute to a fair peace.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, Borrell was unusually blunt in his condemnation of a nation that has increasingly moved from being an EU partner to being a rival on the global stage.

Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, left, shakes hands with United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken, right. (AP) toward Russia and partly used that as a justification for the invasion.

Russia warned that it would be forced to take

“retaliatory measures” to address what it called security threats created by Finland’s membership. It had also warned it would bolster forces near Finland if NATO sends any additional troops or equipment to

what is its 31st member country.

The alliance says it poses no threat to Moscow.

Neighbouring Sweden, which has avoided military alliances for more than 200 years, has also applied. But objections from NATO members Turkiye and Hungary have delayed the process.

“I’m tempted to say this is maybe the one thing that we can thank Mr. Putin for because he once again here pre cipitated something he claims to want to prevent by Russia’s aggression, causing many countries to believe that they have to do more to look out for their own defence and to make sure that they can deter possible Russian aggression going forward,” US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said just before accepting the documents that made Finland’s membership official.

WELLINGTON, APR 4 (IANS): New

Zealand

Prime Minister Chris Hipkins on Tuesday appointed his predecessor Jacinda Ardern as Special Envoy for the Christchurch Call, a Wellington-led global initiative to fight terrorism and extremism after the deadly March 2019 mosque shootings.

The Special Envoy for the Christchurch Call will report directly to the Prime Minister, reports Xinhua news agency. Ardern has declined to receive any remuneration for the new post and will commence her role on April 17, Hipkins said.

“The Christchurch Call is a foreign policy priority for the government and Jacinda Ardern is uniquely placed to keep pushing forward with the goal of eliminating violent extremist content online,” the Prime Minister said.

“Terrorist and violent extremist content online is a global issue, but for many in New Zealand it is also very personal,” he said, adding that the Christchurch Call is part of the response to the March 15, 2019, terror attacks on the two Christchurch mosques which killed 51 people.

The special envoy will serve as New Zealand’s senior representative on Christchurch Call-related matters, working closely with France as co-leaders, according to the prime minister.

The Christchurch Call is a global initiative working across governments, the tech sector and civil society to eliminate terrorist and violent extremist content online.

On October 14, a Russian engineer named Gleb Karakulov boarded a flight from Kazakhstan to Turkey with his wife and daughter.

He switched off his phone to shut out the crescendo of urgent, enraged messages, said goodbye to his life in Russia and tried to calm his fast-beating heart.

But this was no ordinary Russian defector. Karakulov was an officer in President Vladimir Putin’s secretive elite personal security service — one of the few Russians to flee and go public who have rank, as well as knowledge of intimate details of Putin’s life and potentially classified information.

Karakulov, who was responsible for secure communications, said moral opposition to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and his fear

of dying there drove him to speak out, despite the risks to himself and his family.

“Our president has become a war criminal,” he said. “It’s time to end this war and stop being silent.”

Karakulov’s account generally conforms with others that paint the Russian president as a once charismatic but increasingly isolated leader, who doesn’t use a cell phone or the Internet and insists on access to Russian state television wherever he goes. He also offered new details about how Putin’s paranoia appears to have deepened since his decision to invade Ukraine in February 2022.

The year 2023 has been a very dark era for the NSCN/Gp RN-Reformation as it marks a very painful unbearable happenings taking atoll the lives of serving Compatriots of High stature holding high office as well Military Command Leaders in a span of few months, consecutively succumbing to loss of lives. The loss of lives seems like a daily routine which has been continuing to haunt the families of NSCN- Reformation. In just recent times the loss of a brethren of the Chaplee k ilonser Ino k hekato k inimi was very unfortunate, as having to bear the loss of someone from ones family tree would indeed be the biggest sorrow one would incur. Even before tears have dried from the deceased families, tragedy once again struck traumatizing even more, a painful state of loss to the families of the Chaplee k ilonser as they had to face the continual loss of lives, death after death when on the 2nd of April 2023, the youngest son of Ino k hekato k inimi, a promising Son TSUk AMU k k INIMI passed away after succumbing to short span of illness, what is even more painful to the deceased parents is having to bid farewell to their beloved Son after a Sumptuous birthday celebration just few days back. As would any parents dream of high hopes for their children, so did the parents of TSUk AMU k k INIMI, however life’s destiny lies only in the hands of God and so did all their dreams been shattered. The NSCN-Reformation with his Excellency p resident and Honorable Ato k ilonser deeply regret for the loss and stands in total sympathy with the bereaved family as they endure sorrow and anxiety at this very difficult times, may God grant solace and rest the little soul into his heavenly abode.

IPL: Gujarat Titans beat Delhi Capitals by 6 wkts

NEW DELHI, APR 4

(IANS): B. Sai Sudharsan slammed an impressive 62 not out while David Miller and Vijay Shankar played crucial roles to help Gujarat Titans defeat Delhi Capitals by six wickets in match seven of IPL 2023 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday.

After Mohammed Shami and Rashid Khan picked three-wicket hauls each for Gujarat to keep Delhi to 162/8 in 20 overs on a pitch which had plenty of pace and bounce, Sudharsan and Shankar played some good solid cricket in their 53-run partnership for the fourth wicket after losing three wickets in power-play.

The duo looked for boundaries while also rotating the strike at the same time. It meant that they were able to keep up with the run rate through riskfree cricket before Shankar fell in the 14th over.

With 46 needed off the last five overs, it was anyone’s game till Gujarat tilted in their favour. David Miller pulled Mukesh Kumar for six, and then lofted over wide long-on for the same result. He then ended the 16th over with a power-

ful drive through cover for four, as 20 runs came off it.

Sudharsan got his fifty in 44 balls with a delightful ramp off Anrich Nortje in the 17th over, followed by a massive swivelled six over fine leg. Miller then uppishly drove off Khaleel Ahmed for four in the 18th over, before finishing off the chase with 11 balls to spare.

Wriddhiman Saha got the chase of 163 off to a flier, punching and lofting

impact player Ahmed for back-to-back boundaries, before ending the over with a superb pick-up shot for six. Shubman Gill welcomed Mukesh in the next over with two exquisitelytimed fours through the off-side.

Nortje struck on his first ball of the tournament, disturbing Saha’s with a scorching nip-backer in the third over, before uprooting Gill’s off-stump with another feisty delivery in

his next over.

Sudharsan wowed everyone with his scoop off Nortje for six, before flicking Ahmed through mid-wicket for four. But the left-arm pacer signed off from power-play by forcing Hardik Pandya to play at a length delivery which he nicked behind to Abishek Porel. Post power-play, Sudharsan survived a caught behind appeal off Kuldeep as replays showed flat line

when the ball went past bat. He joined forces with Shankar, the impact player, to get Gujarat’s chase back on track.

While Sudarshan made full use of width from Mukesh Kumar to drive him through extracover, Shankar produced some eye-catchy boundary shots, like lofting over Kuldeep Yadav’s head, pulling stylishly off Mitchell Marsh and Ahmed.

The 53-run partnership ended when Marsh trapped Shankar lbw and got the decision in his favour via DRS, as the crowd found its voice back. Miller survived an lbw off Kuldeep with replays showing ball missing leg-stump in the 15th over. From there, Miller and Sudharsan took Gujarat home without any hiccups.

Brief scores:

Delhi Capitals 162/8 in 20 overs (David Warner 37, Axar Patel 36; Rashid Khan 3-31, Mohammed Shami 3-41) lost to Gujarat Titans 163/4 in 18.1 overs (B Sai Sudharsan 62 not out, David Miller 31 not out; Anrich Nortje 2-39, Mitchell Marsh 1-24) by six wickets

Hag rues absence of Eriksen, Casemiro in Man Utd midfield

LONDON, APR 4 (AGENCIES): The absence of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro is one of the main reasons why Manchester United are struggling for results in recent weeks as games are “decided in midfield”, manager Erik Ten Hag said on Tuesday.

Danish midfielder Eriksen was ruled out for up to three months in late January due to an ankle injury, while Casemiro is serving a four-match suspension after receiving his second red card of the season.

NEW DELHI, APR 4 (IANS): The 22-time Grand Slam Champion Rafael Nadal on Tuesday announced that he will miss the French Open warm-up tournament, Monte Carlo Masters, as he is still nursing his hip injury.

The Monte Carlo Masters is slated to take place from April 8-16 which will mark the beginning of the clay court season, where the 14-time Roland Garros champion has enjoyed immense success in his career.

“I’m still not ready to compete at the highest level. I will not be able to play in one of the most important tournaments of my career, Monte Carlo,” the Spaniard tweeted on Tuesday.

“I am not yet in a position to play with the maximum guarantees and I continue my preparation process, hoping to return soon,” he added.

Nadal has been out of action since his Australian Open second-round loss to American Mackenzie McDonald, where he aggravated a hip injury.
