Demystifying the Power of Crystals
SUMMER 2022
6
T
he power of crystals goes back to the legends of the ancient civilization of Atlantis, where crystals were an integral part of healing, treating, and diagnosing people’s health. People were taken to a temple made of crystal and with the use of solar power, they were not only concerned with healing the physical body, but also the “etheric” or energetic body that surrounds the physical body and holds the memory of the disease. Tribal shamans around the world hold a strong belief that quartz crystals are considered the strongest power object for healing. Marcel Vogel, who was an IBM scientist for nearly 30 years, concluded, “The crystal emits a vibration which extends and amplifies the powers of the user’s mind. Like a laser, it radiates energy in a coherent, highly concentrated form, and this energy may be transmitted into objects or people at will.” Quartz crystal bowls vibrate at frequencies that produce powerful sound waves. These tones are the energetic manifestation of the crystalline structure of the bowls themselves. The sound of crystal bowls permeates our system and resonates with our essence; thus, inner chaos, conflict, and dissonance seems to almost immediately be transformed into harmony. Alignment with the tones of the crystal bowls is one of the most dynamic forms of sound healing found today. Benefits include reducing stress, boosting the immune system, balancing the chakra system, re-energizing the auric field, promoting deep relaxation, and increasing mental and emotional clarity.

Maui Aui–The Complete After-Sunburn Natural Remedy
I
t’s summertime and you know someone is going to get burned. Then what? Aloe is great to cool the damaged skin, but what about the pain and itching? What about the skin repair? Why leave the job half done? Now you have the ultimate natural after-sunburn remedy available. It’s in a gentle spray so you don’t have to rub painful sensitive skin. It’s soothing and gentle enough for kids and strong enough for anyone. Yes, it contains aloe vera, but it doesn’t stop there. The first phase of sunburn is pain. Lots of it. With the natural analgesic action of white willow (from which they derived aspirin) and Arnica montana, Maui Aui sprays on comfort with a cooling mist that lasts for hours. These herbs are in an aloe vera base to treat your skin right. Instead of feeling helpless when your kids come back from the beach red as lobsters, you can do something to make them feel better immediately. The next day, that pain will turn to itching as the damaged nerve endings in the skin continue to complain about the overdose of sun. Maui Aui contains Calendula and St. John’s Wort to calm irritated nerves and stop that itch. If it doesn’t itch, you won’t scratch, and if you don’t scratch, it won’t hurt. Additionally, Maui Aui contains natural tropical oils to protect the dried skin as new cells emerge to replace those killed by excess sunlight. The remaining work to be done is to repair and replace damaged skin. This is greatly enhanced by comfrey and Arnica, the “wonder duo” of tissue repair. Continued spraying of Maui Aui reduces the healing time and increases your vacation comfort. It represents the most holistic approach to dealing with after-sunburn treatment you can buy, anywhere and at any price. Even though you brought sunscreen, you know someone will get burned. It always happens. Now there is something natural you can use. Don’t leave home without it. Visit https://www. mynaturesrite.com/product/maui-aui/ to learn more.

esearch increasingly shows there are very deep connections between brain function and “body” issues. Ildi uses these connections and applies neuroanatomy to re-educate sensory systems like vision, equilibrium, and proprioception to help create safe and pain-free movement and promote overall well-being. The brain is an incredibly complex organ that adapts to, reacts to, or is the starting point of everything we experience in life, including pain, balance issues, physical injuries, cognitive problems, memory loss, attention disorders, and anxiety. Ildi (Ildiko) Varhelyi, founder and owner of Neurocentric Health and Fitness (NCHF), recently relocated her business to Naples from Boston, MA. She brings over 20 years of experience helping people with balance, dizziness, vertigo, and chronic pain issues. “Our physical, cognitive and emotional health are all controlled and guided by our brain health. When there is a disconnect in our brain, our overall health suffers. My job is to find the disconnect in the brain and/or the nervous system by assessing how a person walks and moves to help them to reset the brain, so all systems can work in harmony and produce optimal health,” says Ildi. People generally don’t know that with proper breathing and conscious activation of our senses—sight, hearing, smell, touch, pressure, taste—we can reset underperforming systems and create a healthy brain and body. There is no better time to start building your optimal health! Use code 50POFF to get 50% off your first consultation.

erman Health and Wellness is a Functional Medicine and Wellness Center that helps individuals reach their goal weight and optimize their gut health, while avoiding needless medications and achieving the highest quality of life imaginable. Berman Health and Wellness’ goal is to treat the problem, not the symptom. We work with clients to maximize their health by evaluating their metabolism, gut health, and blood work, then we are able to treat each individual aspect of the client. Berman Health and Wellness focuses on optimizing blood sugar and hormones for proper weight loss, energy, and improvement in sleep. By evaluating blood testing, we can develop personalized meal plans, exercise, and/or supplement recommendations to augment the client’s progress. Our clients work one-on-one with our Medical and Dietary Team to optimize their plan and achieve high-quality, long-lasting results. The follow-up, support, and guidance by the team is priceless for the client’s success. Berman Health and Wellness specializes in improving autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Hashimoto’s, psoriasis, migraines, and more. Since our gut is essentially our “second brain,” it is important to fully evaluate the internal gut health while working to improve overall inflammation and the symptoms resulting from the inflammation. Many times, clients have food sensitivities (not always allergies) that are leading to an inflammatory response within their body, resulting in headaches, skin abnormalities, gastrointestinal dysfunction, joint pain, swelling, and more. It is vital to treat the individual as a whole—treat the problem, not the symptom, while avoiding needless medications. Nina Azwoir, First Vice President of Investments, Wintrust Wealth Management
N
ina Azwoir is a Financial Advisor for Wintrust Wealth Management with over 20 years of experience, 17 spent as a licensed financial advisor.
What sets you apart from other financial advisors?
The main reason I got involved in financial advising was to help hardworking individuals plan for and achieve their financial goals. Having a financial goal goes well beyond just planning for retirement and can involve education, dream vacations, starting a business, saving for a new car, and so much more. The vast scope of complex problems to solve makes this job interesting to me, as no two situations are the same. My team and I stand out by providing exceptional service to our clients, being more than just an advisor but almost like another family member. This feeling of treating all like family comes from my experiences of both culture and adversity growing up in Iraq and having to flee to stay alive. I was initially born in the north of Iraq and lived there until about the age of five when my family escaped from the Iraqi Ba’ath regime. We spent 3 days and nights making the trek on horseback to get across the border into Iran to escape persecution. In the short time we spent in Iran, many families treated my family like their own. Less than a year later we had to flee Iran and were given emergency refugee accommodations in Canada. Until we could make our way to North America, I saw and met beautiful strangers from different worlds take us in with loving kindness and grace It is experiences like these that instilled the drive to be the best version of myself each day. This drive allows me to stand out in a sea of advisors.
What is the best memory you have about being a financial advisor?
A client who I helped with his first business savings account 18 years ago. He wanted to take advantage of his wife’s expertise as a nurse and they opened up their first assisted living facility in Texas. We started with a financial plan and promised to check it every year. In 18 years, we have wished his kids off to college and welcomed his first grandson. I have watched their business grow exponentially to create a life he imagined. We have grown together to get through market ups and downs, and yet whenever we see volatility we always reach for the center and make sure that little old plan we check every year is on track. It makes me proud to see the people I care about grow and spend time with family. That is the reward that keeps me motivated to keep doing what I do. It is my way of life to help guide others as I have been guided. Nina Azwoir, First Vice President of Investments, Wintrust Wealth Management nazwoir@wintrustwealth.com 239.687.5204

Exploring
the Role of Muscles in
Better Health By OsteoStrong
Larger muscles are often stronger muscles, which leads to improved daily functioning in most individuals. Muscle is metabolically active and affects the way the body handles nutrients. For instance, people who are more muscular (especially combined with lower body fat), typically have better insulin control. From a health perspective, advancing age is associated with a loss of muscle mass, better known as sarcopenia. Preserving muscle mass can preserve strength, and strength is a predictor of survival as one ages. Muscles consist of long, slender muscle cells or fibers. Each muscle cell is a bundle of fine myofibrils, the cylindrical filaments whose name derives from the Greek mys, meaning muscle. The development of a muscle cell’s mass, density, shape, and function is called hypertrophy. An example of adaptation, hypertrophy allows the muscles to meet stress caused by exercise and/or function. Within the world of hypertrophy, there are two key types of muscle growth:
•
Myofibrillar Hypertrophy (also called functional hypertrophy): Enhances muscle
density by increasing the number of myofibrils within the muscle cells, as triggered by osteogenic loading. Sarcoplasmic Hypertrophy: Triggered when lifting weights, increases muscle size by increasing the volume of sarcoplasmic fluid within the muscle cells.
Declining Strength, Reversed
It’s not just bone density that decreases with age. According to the American College of Sports Medicine, we lose roughly 10% of our muscle mass by age 50. Through our 60s and 70s, our muscle strength will drop by about 15% per decade. By the time we hit our 80s, what’s left of our muscle strength will decline by 30% each decade thereafter. But rather than resign us to less than golden later years, these statistics should serve as a powerful call to action. Because here’s the most important fact of all: osteogenic loading can reverse this decline in people of all ages.
Muscles and OsteoStrong
Many doctors refer their patients to OsteoStrong due to its amazing benefits and capabilities. Spine specialist Dr. Rikin Patel has this to say: “With OsteoStrong, improvements can be seen in balance, posture, strength, and athletic performance for any age group.” Whether you suffer from muscle loss, osteoporosis, joint pain, injury, or simply want to improve athletic performance, OsteoStrong may be the solution you’ve been looking for. •

hen we run, speak, breathe, or engage in all the other physical activities that get us through our day, we do so through the contraction of our skeletal muscles. ur bodies are designed to be resilient! Our immune system is our number-one defense to help protect us from disease. Developing a powerful immune system involves a complete lifestyle strategy, including detoxification, super foods, super herbs, and healthy lifestyle choices. Leaning
on the traditional medical system to “fix” you after you have been “broken” is a backward approach. We need to be educated on what we can do to be proactive to support our own body’s ability to heal, become stronger, and live longer.
The Basic 7
1. Sleep 2. Hydrate 3. Nourish 4. Exercise 5. Manage Stress 6. Self-Detox 7. Mindfulness Practice These are seven things you can do daily that, over time, will make a huge impact on your health. Although all these areas are important to focus on to help improve your health, when it comes to what is on your plate, improving your overall health can be fun—and delicious! The following are some functional foods to optimize your health, become more resilient, and nourish with the most function out of your food.
Sea Vegetables
Broccoli Sprouts
We know that broccoli is one of those beneficial cruciferous vegetables we should eat daily, but did you know that the baby sprouts that bud from the seed are bursting with nutrition? This delicate stem contains a concentrated amount of sulforaphane, a cancer-battling compound that helps reduce inflammation, detoxifies the body, and fights free radicals. One cup of broccoli sprouts has double the fiber as the same cup of fully grown broccoli, plus contains 60% of your immune-building vitamin C. Broccoli sprouts can easily be grown on a windowsill, and they bloom in a matter of days. You can also find them at your local farmer’s markets or grocery; however, they are best eaten the same day they are picked to maximize the nutrients. It is easy to sprinkle them over a salad or add to a wrap, and they make the most beautiful garnish on top of any dish! They are also available in supplement form.

The miracle of mushrooms! These fungi are one of the most important gateway foods for ultimate health. The mycelium makes up the mushroom and this is where the enormous number of enzymes, antimicrobial agents, antiviral compounds are found. The web of mycelium that reaches far beneath the earth is the cellular foundation to creating rich soils—so mushrooms are not only nourishing our body but are nourishing Mother Earth as well. Mushrooms are composed of vitamin D and polysaccharides that are rich in B-glucans, which are anti-tumor, immuno-modulating, microbiome building, brain building, mood balancing, and gut healing, among many other properties. There are many varieties of mushrooms, and mushroom farming has become a new industry. Some of the favorites are reishi, turkey tail, lion’s mane, shiitake, and chaga, but there are over 1,020 edible mushroom species out there, not to mention the psychedelic varieties that are becoming famous for their mental health benefits. And best of all, mushrooms add a delicious, savory flavor to any dish. •
“From algae, kelp, dulse, and nori to spirulina, wakame, chlorella, kombu, sea greens are bursting with nutrients that land vegetables can’t compare to.”
ESSENTIAL Naples
If you think a kale salad is the healthiest of the green vegetables, you may be missing out on the veggies of the sea! From algae, kelp, dulse, and nori to spirulina, wakame, chlorella, kombu, sea greens are bursting with nutrients that land vegetables can’t compare to. Think about it: These veggies are being nourished from the rich sea minerals, compared to the mineral depleted soils and dirty reclaimed water that is sprayed on the fields—they don’t spray crops of sea greens with pesticides and chemicals like they do our fields. These sea veggies help support detoxification from heavy metals and other toxins we breathe and eat. They are a great source of iodine, which is critical for thyroid health, and are abundant in antioxidants, which protect the DNA from damage as well as protecting against free radical damage (the aging process). Because they contain more fiber and prebiotics than most fruits and vegetables, they support and feed the gut microbiome. Not only that, but they are also rich in vitamins and minerals—in fact, sea greens are higher in copper and iron than spinach! If you are looking for plant-based omega-3s, look for sea algae. After all, that is what the fish are eating that makes them rich in omega-3s. From sea to table…how do we eat more sea greens? Thankfully, they are available in flakes, powders, or tablets that can easily be sprinkled on a salad, added to soups and smoothies, or taken as a supplement. However, because they are naturally
absorbent and can pick up contaminants and heavy metals, it is important to source organic sea vegetables.

t’s hard for us to know just how good our posture is…or isn’t. We don’t always have good perspective on this since we can’t see ourselves from a 360º angle. The best way for us to really see our own posture is in a mirror or a photo. Have you ever noticed your posture in a photo? Not always flattering!

When we’re texting, Googling, emailing, or reading from our phones, we’re often slumped down, shoulders rounded, belly out, head forward. This posture is becoming very common. In fact, the head-forward position has become much more frequent since we started using cell phones. There is even a new term used to describe the head-forward posture: text neck. Tilting the head forward to use devices directly affects the spine. Angling the head forward to 15 degrees places about 27 pounds of force on the neck and becomes incrementally worse the further
forward the neck moves. This positioning can change the curvature of the neck and often results in cervical and shoulder pain, headaches, and excessive curvature of the thoracic spine. This changing posture is a significant concern for younger people, as they tend to spend much more of their time on a device. Muscles like the trapezius, rhomboids, and shoulder external rotators often become weak, and the tension this posture creates can cause suboccipital muscle tightness, leading to headaches.
Avoid Text Neck
Being aware of this is a good first step toward correcting the problem. Think about your posture when you are using your phone. Try to bring your phone to eye level. Make sure you aren’t spending an excessive amount of time on your phone. Choose to do some of your web surfing on a computer that is at eye level. Be aware of laptops, too. Bending forward to look down at a computer on your lap can create similar issues.
One of the most beneficial things you can do for correcting posture is to lengthen the muscles in the front of the body. Our everyday activities such as cell phone use, computer time, and even driving cause the muscles in the front of the body to contract and become shortened. These shortened muscles, especially the large muscles like the psoas and pectoral muscles, cause tension as they pull on bone structure and back muscles.

Traditionally, it has been difficult to stretch those large muscles after they have contracted; they are resistant to manual massage or stretching. However, an innovative technology is greatly aiding in this process. Robotic muscular therapy uses a computer-aided robotic arm to apply static pressure to a muscle to relax fibers. The sustained gentle pressure the machine applies allows these large muscles to soften and release. In this process, the muscle tissues relax and return to their natural state. As these muscles lengthen, pressure is taken off bone structure and joints, resulting in improved posture and therefore, tension in back muscles is also relieved. With less muscle tension and improved posture, range of motion improves. Greater flexibility and reduced pain are experienced. Everyday activities can cause an imbalance in our muscles, not to mention what repetitive motions or injuries can do to the body. Robotic muscular therapy can help to correct these imbalances, resulting in reduced pain and greater mobility. Clients routinely report less pain, recovery from injuries, increased range of motion, and a general feeling of well-being. Call us today to find out how Precision Robotics Muscular Therapy can help you! •

Drink Less and Be Better Hydrated By Kenny Lu

“You can drink less with Spring Aqua, yet be better hydrated.” —Gina Bria, Founder of Hydration Foundation
C
lean, hydrating water once flowed freely on our planet. It is a gift from Mother Earth and at Spring Aqua, we believe Mother Earth got it right. According to the Hydration Foundation, a leading research organization focused on actual cellular hydration, 99% of the molecules making up your body are water-based. At Spring Aqua, our goal is to provide water nourishment that is clean of toxins and is hydrating and life-promoting for your body. Several world-famous mountain springs attract millions of people annually because of the healing properties of the water. The Netflix documentary Down to Earth features Zac Efron’s and Darin Olien’s visit to one of them, Lourdes Springs in France. Lourdes Springs is home to one of the most celebrated healing shrines in the world, with 4–6 million visitors a year, most of whom seek cures from drinking or bathing in the water. Since the late 1800s, scientists have studied these springs, hoping to unlock the mysteries generating the miraculous results noted by visitors. Through mimicking the rock layers, geology, and other properties outlined in scientific studies, We at Spring Aqua have developed our own version of the Lourdes water. As a result, we have created what we call the “Ecosystem in a Box”—completely clean water and hydrating technology, the way Mother Earth intended it.
Rediscover Real Hydration
There are many ways to treat drinking water, such as reverse osmosis, distillers, filters, and
bottled water, all ranging in cost and quality. Most focus on purification but overlook an essential quality: the ability to sufficiently hydrate. This is because at the cellular level, the water is not being absorbed as nature intended it. Studies have shown that being just 10% dehydrated can lead to chronic illnesses, and being as little as 2% dehydrated shows a measurable cognitive loss. Real hydration, then, is the fountain of youth and the foundation to health. New research is showing us how the health of our cells is directly tied to the structure of the water inside of them. We’re all familiar with the three phases of water—liquid, solid (ice), and gas (steam). The discovery of structured water introduced a fourth phase, in which water takes on a thicker, plasma-like form. Structured water is only 10% denser but substantially more organized, leading to measurably higher water concentration at the molecular level, allowing for faster and more effective cellular absorption. Research shows the amount of water we drink isn’t the real issue. Anthropologist Gina Bria, Founder of the Hydration Foundation and author of the book Quench, discovered that people living in deserts were often better hydrated than the average American, because they were eating plants to hydrate themselves. How could that be? The water in the plants is structured by nature. Spring Aqua has successfully replicated the process by which plants structure water. The result: One glass of Spring Aqua water may be equal to two or more glasses of typical filtered water in hydration value.
Spring Aqua Unique Technology
Our Ecosystem in a Box turns your tap water into water that is clean of toxins and chemicals, hydrating, and life and wellness promoting. Our filters remove all the harmful chemicals and contaminants, but that’s only the beginning. In addition to properly structuring the water, we boost its power by adding dissolved molecular hydrogen, which is stabilized, unlike tablets and ionizers.
Structure. Hydrogen. Ionized Minerals.

You may notice the similarity between the terms “hydrogen” and “hydration.” This is because hydration is all about getting hydrogen into the cells. The dense, organized molecular structure of structured water is what effectively creates this absorption enrichment. Hydrogen-enhanced water is a powerful antioxidant as well. With our system, one liter of water can be equal to consuming 750 bananas, 35 carrots, four bags of spinach in antioxidant value. An important element missing in most filtered water systems are important life-enhancing minerals that get stripped out during the purification process. Spring Aqua replenishes them in a bio-available ionized form. We call our system “WET Technology.” It is an award-winning, eco-friendly product, recognized by WIIPA (World Invention Intellectual Property Associations) and certified by SGS, the world’s largest provider of inspection, verification, testing, and certification services. Our filter certification data is publicly available. WET Technology uses no electricity and no plastic bottles, fits under your sink, and wastes no water. Spring Aqua is the perfect solution for your in-home, healthy water filtration system. •

Our Gut Is Our
Second Brain
SUMMER 2022

“If we have less good bacteria and now we have an increased amount of bad bacteria into our tissues and bloodstream, the immune system is constantly fighting.” —Jenni Berman, PA-C, CPT, CNS
O
ur intestinal lining can make or break us. If we have strong intestinal lining, we are keeping food particles in the intestinal tract that then get absorbed or expelled appropriately. When this happens, we absorb proper nutrients, have proper vitamin levels, and lower inflammatory markers. This is a perfect scenario but unfortunately, it is very rare.
The Major Problem of Gut Permeability
The intestinal tract has villi, fingerlike structures that aid in absorption of our nutrients. These villi can be damaged, reducing our ability to absorb nutrients and vitamins and leading to vitamin deficiencies and malnourishment. Our intestinal lining covers more than 4,000 square feet of surface area. The intestinal lining has tight junctions that are supposed to stay tight so that particles do not get outside of the intestinal tract and into the tissues underneath it. When the gut is unhealthy, these junctions get holes or cracks in it, allowing
bacteria, food particles, and toxins to get through and penetrate these tissues. This is called leaky gut or gut permeability. The penetration of these particles into the tissues stimulates the immune system to react. Our body sees these particles as foreign bodies; thus the immune system gets to work…and then goes on overdrive. Gut permeability leads to a slew of problems. First, with the intestinal villi damage, we are not absorbing nutrients properly. Then, with the holes in the tight junctions, the good bacteria leak out and bad bacteria begin to develop. With this, the environment of our intestinal tract changes, increasing growth of bad bacteria (which also then gets into our bloodstream and tissues) and decreasing the good bacteria in our intestinal tract.
How Bacteria Make a Difference
We know that we need good bacteria for gut health and that bad bacteria can lead to infections. Think about it, though: If we have less good
bacteria and now we have an increased amount of bad bacteria into our tissues and bloodstream, the immune system is constantly fighting. What is this doing to our body? The immune system is starting to react at a heightened state due to the foreign particles and toxins in our tissues and now in our blood. The immune system will start creating antibodies (inflammatory markers—think of them as little red ants) that are then going around to our entire body. These antibodies attack our organs, leading to autoimmune diseases.

Autoimmune disease is when the body starts attacking normal cells. The immune system is supposed to attack foreign cells like viruses and bacteria. When the body has a leaky gut and foreign bodies are entering our tissues and blood stream, the body has more circulating antibodies to fight these off, and those antibodies continue to fight and attack our healthy organs, leading to these autoimmune diseases. Autoimmune disease affects more than 24 million people in the United States alone. There are many blood tests, diagnoses, and treatments for autoimmune disease and their symptoms. But what isn’t talked about enough is actually identifying the cause of autoimmune disease through your gut health and treating this problem to reduce the effects, inflammation, symptoms, and progression. If you are experiencing some of these symptoms you may have abnormal gut health. Gut permeability doesn’t just affect your bowel movements or abdominal symptoms. It doesn’t just affect your joint pain or headaches. It can increase your risk of prediabetes, diabetes, or other metabolic dysfunction in which your body is not able to metabolize food efficiently, affecting the rate of your metabolism, sleep, energy, and brain function. Your gut health is systemic. Treat it from the inside out. •

n this new world, when every time we turn around there is another crisis, is anxiety really something to be concerned about? Especially these days, everyone may feel a little anxious at times. Anxiety is the mind and body’s normal reaction to stressful, dangerous, or unfamiliar situations. It is the sense of uneasiness, distress, or dread you feel before a significant event. A certain level of anxiety helps us stay alert and aware, but for those suffering from an anxiety disorder, it feels far from normal—it can be completely debilitating. The most common form of anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder (GAD),
consists of persistent worry and the stress and tension that accompany it. Some of the symptoms of GAD are: • Restlessness or being keyed up or on edge • Being easily fatigued • Difficulty concentrating or mind going blank • Irritability • Increased heart rate • Sleep disturbance (difficulty falling or staying asleep or restless or dissatisfying sleep) • Quick, shallow breaths • Increased adrenaline • Impending doom
• Increased muscle tension • Light headedness • Chest pains

The anxiety, worry, or physical symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. The intensity, duration, or frequency of the anxiety and worry is out of proportion to the actual likelihood or impact of the anticipated event. Anxiety differs from fear in several ways. Fear is a response to present danger. It is usually highly focused, attached to a very specific object or circumstance, and is meant to mobilize fast action. Fear is contagious, marked by widened pupils, pale skin, and signals others to be afraid. Anxiety does not require an external stimulus— it is a response to a real or imagined future threat, thus the need for constant vigilance in anticipation of some calamity. It is the name we give to the internal sensations of warning generated by the body’s reaction to an alert to protect us from danger. Without waiting for us to make a conscious assessment of the danger, chemical (cortisol, adren- Anxiety across Genders and Races aline) warnings are sent to the various organs. Is the Risk of Statin Medications
Greater than the Reward? By Dr. Melissa MacVenn, MD

hen I start talking with patients about optimizing their heart health, the conversation will often turn to statin medications, prescribed to fight artery-damaging cholesterol. It almost feels like assembling a jigsaw puzzle together—there are lots of unique pieces to consider, and finding the right place for them can take extra time and careful thought. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for adults across all genders and most racial and ethnic groups in the United States. That’s a good reason to focus a little more on statins—this powerful
yet controversial class of medications. There are several brands, each with subtle differences in action and side effects—Lipitor, Zocor, Pravachol, etc.—and tens of millions of people take them. I often counsel patients who have concerns that statin medications are overprescribed. Those concerns have some foundation.
Risks, Benefits, Evidence

Diving into those risks and benefits takes time, patience, a strong relationship with your doctor, and a sense of the alternatives available for you to solve the heart health puzzle—alternatives that go well beyond simply whether to take statins. There must also be a focus on how lifestyle changes can significantly reduce cholesterol and therefore may limit the need for statin medication. This healthy lifestyle/heart health connection is no secret. The American College of Cardiology’s guidelines emphasize that even for younger

patients or those with no evident risk factors, lifestyle optimization is central. Medical practitioners can prescribe pills, but they can also prescribe, and help you achieve, a program of more physical activity, better nutrition, weight loss, and blood pressure and cholesterol control. When your risk factors have been carefully calculated by your doctor and the most reasonable lifestyle alternatives are considered, then statins— their effectiveness and potential side effects—may well be part of the picture. disease to get much protection from them, and the side effects of the statin may outweigh the benefit. While side effects are rare—the most common being muscle pain, digestive issues, headaches, and sleep problems, which often go away if medication is changed or reduced—the rarer side effects, such as an increased risk of developing diabetes, can be harder to reverse. But many other studies have concluded that the side effects are negligible, especially when weighed against the effectiveness of statins in preventing heart attacks and strokes in those at risk. One line of research, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, even concludes that given the prevalence of heart disease and the drugs’ effectiveness, statins are heavily underprescribed. The study suggests that most side effects can be dealt with by having a thorough conversation with your doctor, so the right drug and the right dose is prescribed based on an individual’s lifestyle and medical background. Evidence-based research is extremely important for broad-scale public policy. But for individual patients who need to work out a plan for their heart health, it can be a confusing and frustrating discussion. There is no one-size-fits-all solution when it comes to statins. There is one important aspect the latest studies agree on: Doctors and patients need to spend more time discussing the benefits and risks of statin drugs, paying particular attention to a patient’s individual health concerns.

Why You Need a Biological Dentist By Dr. Josephine Perez, DMD
SUMMER 2022
22 “We have known for quite a long time that there is a mouth-body connection. Bacteria from the mouth travels through the blood stream to the organs.” - Dr. Josephine, Perez, DMD
A
biological dentist seeks the safest, least toxic and most conservative way to accomplish modern dentistry that is safe, functional, durable and esthetic. It is interesting how the term “alternative medicine” refers to a new holistic, integrative and functional approach to health… yet it has been in existence for thousands of years and “modern medicine” is about 100 years old. Most people discover alternative methods because of a personal medical condition that has not resolved. Others are already well versed in holistic methods and live by them. We have known for quite a long time that there is a mouth–body connection. Bacteria from the mouth travels through the blood stream to the organs. As a biological dentist, my mantra continues to be: A healthy mouth is a healthy body and a healthy life!
How Do You Find a Biological Dentist?
Ask questions! Most dentists today are mercury free; however, very few are mercury safe. Being mercury safe means you protect the patient from harmful mercury vapors while removing them. Specialized equipment and strict protocol are necessary. A practice also needs to be S.M.A.R.T. certified, which entails rigorous training and examination to minimize harm to patients and staff. Our office protocols have always had universal precautions, but our S.M.A.R.T. certification provides even greater precautionary measures than a traditional dental office. Our office is already biological and we have practiced these protocols for years, so we do not need to play catch
up to the new normal. Here are a few of the stateof-the-art offerings we have in our practice.
Compatibility Testing
Every person is different and every person’s toxic level is different. This is why the most important variable is finding the root cause. We encourage compatibility testing with everyone. It is extremely important to determine each person’s compatibility and only then do we choose the appropriate materials. We all want to enjoy quality of life, so I strive for finding root cause so patients can know their own bodies and can live, play, travel, and dance to their heart’s content. It all begins with good food, and food is medicine.
Air and Water Purification Systems
We have state-of-the-art air and water purification systems. Our AC has always had MERV14 or better filters. Our air is surgical grade that traps and kills bacteria, VOCs, mold spores, off gassing, parasites, and other toxins. We have specialized evacuation systems for aerosols, which we are using on every patient even if it’s just a cleaning. This aerosole EVAC system has silver impregnated activated carbon and an electrostatic filter. We have invested in specialized UV-C filters (222 nm–254 nm) that are left overnight. Our ozone machine is producing fresh ozonated water all day; in fact, this ozonated water runs through our systems so that no biofilms are formed in any of the water lines. We have specialized PPE made to order and our masks are P100 respirators.

Once called the Bird Estate, the place had already been an establishment for lodgers in the past. It wasn’t until 1948 when the Smith family bought the property and named it Winvian—a combination of the names of Winthrop Smith and his wife, Vivian Smith. A lifetime, eighteen luxury cottages, and a suite later, Winvian Farm has become the wonderful getaway that it is today, where the body can rest and the mind is free to play. At the threshold of the woodlands there are 18 individually designed, resort-style cottages and the luxurious Hadley Suite, each promising a whole new experience for guests. Winvian Farm: Made for Romance
Indeed, those meticulously and charmingly designed cottages of ours ensure a vacation like none you’ve ever experienced before. Take the Helicopter cottage, which comes by its name literall—your well-appointed lovers’ nook in this case encompasses a restored 1968-vintage Sikorsky Sea King Pelican HH-3F Coast Guard chopper. Or bask in each other’s company in the Litchfield
Hills canopy courtesy of Treehouse, where you’ll reawaken the boundless imagination of childhood while luxuriating in such very grown-up pleasures as fireplaces (one for each floor), a jetted soaking tub, steam shower, full bar, and king-size bed, all cast against the sylvan backdrop of the arboreal cottage’s 35-foot-high vantage. Or perhaps you’ll choose Stone, that slate-roofed stonework refuge that seems to rise out of the very ground itself, or the New England lighthouse recreation of Maritime, or the perpetually summery haven of Greenhouse. From classic New England country retreats to whimsical fantasylands, there’s a Winvian Farm cottage suited to just about any taste, mood, or occasion, and despite their diversity, each one comes imbued with genuine warmth and a first-class inventory of luxury amenities.
Our Cottages • Artist : An entire bungalow of charming arts and crafts contrasting the Connecticut woods and meadows. It has three airy rooms, all connected with arched doorways, and an area of 890 square feet that comes with a wood-burning fireplace, a hot tub, and a steam shower.
• Beaver Lodge: A two-story cottage made of wood and stone built beside Beaver Pond. The cottage is all made of interlocking sticks with a master bed, a spiral staircase, and a table for two. It has an area of 1,250 square feet with a wood-burning fireplace, steam shower, and waterfall hot tub.
• Connecticut Yankee: Using Twain’s classic as an inspiration, this cottage has a New England clapboard theme on the outside and is filled with rich fabrics, stunning antiques, and a herringbone fireplace that makes it feel like a king’s chamber on the inside. The bathroom has slabs of rock that make the surroundings of the bathtub look like Stonehenge. This 950-square-foot royal domain also has a hot tub and steam shower, and is dog friendly.
• Golf: As the name suggests, this 900-squarefoot distinctive clubhouse is the golf lover’s choice. It has a great view overlooking the meadows, lush carpets of green that complement the living room’s wood-burning fireplace, and a bathroom with a steam shower and a hot tub. • Greenhouse: This 1,050-square-foot cottage makes every season feel even more amazing. There’s wicker furniture and a fireplace in the living room, and going through the glass doors leads to the patio, which in turn leads to the forest. The cozy bedroom also has a fireplace of its own.

Eliminate Pain and Balance the Body By Dr. Diane Hayden, PhD
I
n our Spring issue I interviewed Mindy DiPietro, owner of Aesthetic Treatment Center, to discuss the fascinating field of bioenergetics and the extraordinary new technology called the NES Bioenergetic System. She is the first practitioner to bring this technology to Naples, and I was excited to be one of her first clients to have an assessment and experience a treatment in her center. The article discussed the basics of Bioenergetics and an introduction to the NES System. This follow-up article expands on the NES Infoceuticals, proprietary liquid remedies that correct information in the body’s control system to support its self-restoring abilities.

these scores after just one Infoceutical protocol. Each Infoceutical is imprinted with specific bio-information to support various organs or systems of the body. Their success lies in resonating with healthy aspects of the body, guiding anything unhealthy back to a more ideal state through the power of resonance. The secret to correcting the body’s control system lies in the information imprinted in these remedies. Infoceuticals contain filtered water and microminerals, and they’re imprinted with specially modulated photons and magnetic fields under a high-voltage electrostatic charge. This sets up specific resonant qualities to support improved function in the body.

mental confusion in older people, poor sleep due to melatonin deficiency, degeneration of tissues, and X-ray exposure. It was recommended I take the following Infoceuticals: Liver 2 and 3, Circulation, Chill, and COH. The Liver Infoceuticals was an obvious recommendation; however, when Circulation came up it was referring to ligaments, tendons, and joints, because of my ongoing knee pain. I’d also been having trouble sleeping and had been under some moderate stress with my business, so it was no surprise that Chill was recommended. COH was a surprise to me as that relates to toxicity in your environment. However, living in an older home in Florida, it wouldn’t surprise me if there were some mold or water issues going on. After taking the Infoceuticals for two weeks, I noticed a definite improvement in my sleep and reduction in stress. After the treatment Mindy had given me previously for my knee when I had already noticed immediate improvement, I’m happy to report that I’ve had no further issues with it—very likely due to the support of the Infoceuticals. It was refreshing to me to see a technology that truly works with the body’s energy systems and observes energetic effects within the body. Life starts with information, which guides energy, which then becomes organized matter. This technology, therapies, and philosophy take all of this into account, to measure and correct fields that drive physiology and encourage lifestyle choices that support good health. • Mindy DiPietro has been CEO at Aesthetic Treatment Centers, in Naples, FL, where she led the development and execution of the spa’s business strategy and ever-growing vision. She is now the first practitioner to bring the NES Health System to Naples. She utilizes this innovative technology and nutritional support to naturally increase your quality of life. Mindy guides you to reestablish trust in your body and helps you to unlock your body’s natural healing abilities. e live in a world full of chaos and commitments. Overtime, busy schedules, long work hours, family obligations, financial and health concerns, traumatic events, and varying life circumstances can lead to burnout and stress. It is no surprise that anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the U.S., affecting 40 million adults in the United States age 18 and older, according to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America (ADAA). Chronic stress and anxiety, if not managed, can send our bodies into a constant state of fight, flight, or freeze, causing
the sympathetic nervous system to release high levels of stress hormones such as adrenaline and nor-adrenaline. In this state of hyper arousal, breathing becomes rapid and shallow, heart rate is elevated and muscle tension increases. This elevated response is useful in times of extreme danger, but not in our everyday lives. In addition, chronic stress and anxiety can negatively impact relationships, cause sleep disturbances, health issues, and lack of focus, among many other symptoms.

“Diaphragmatic breathing helps to stimulate the parasympathetic “rest and digest” response, expand lung capacity, oxygenate the body, improve digestion, lower blood pressure, and inspire a sense of peace and calm.” —Lisa Brown
A great way to help manage and alleviate chronic stress and anxiety is to adopt a consistent yoga practice. Originating in ancient India, yoga aims to bring balance to the mind, body, and spirit through physical postures (asana), breath techniques (pranayama), meditation, and deep relaxation. In addition to promoting physical strength, balance, and flexibility, yoga can also positively impact mental and spiritual well-being. While yoga poses (asanas) can help to move stagnant energy, alleviate muscle tension, and release physical stress, pranayama (breath techniques), mindfulness practices, and meditation can also help. The Sanskrit word pranyama, meaning “increasing or restraining the flow of air or aliveness,” is often incorporated into the physical practice of yoga but can also be used before meditation or as a standalone exercise to cultivate a greater flow of “prana,” otherwise known as life force energy.
Breathe Your Way to a More Relaxed State of Being
While there are many different breathing techniques in yoga, belly breathing—also referred to as abdominal breathing or diaphragmatic breathing—is the foundation of any yoga practice. Diaphragmatic breathing involves breathing deeply into the belly rather than shallowly into the chest. The diaphragm is a large, dome-shaped muscle located at the base of the lungs that helps control breathing. When inhaling, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, creating more space in the chest cavity, causing the lungs and belly to expand. When exhaling, the diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, causing the belly to draw in toward the lower spine as the air is released. Breathing consciously in a way that is slow and controlled can help reduce high levels of fight or flight stress hormones, lower heart rate, and bring the body back into homeostasis. Diaphragmatic breathing helps to stimulate the parasympathetic “rest and digest” response, expand lung capacity, oxygenate the body, improve digestion, lower blood pressure, and inspire a sense of peace and calm. Observing the flow of air moving into and out of the nostrils as well the rise and fall of the belly on each breath in and out increases mindfulness by shifting the focus and attention of the practitioner more fully into the present moment. Diaphragmatic breathing can be done sitting or
lying down. Beginners may want to start laying down on a flat surface (knees can be bent). 1. Sit comfortably, with your spine nice and tall, shoulders, head and neck relaxed; alternately, if you are a beginner, you may choose to lie down on a flat surface. 2. Place one hand on your belly below the rib cage and one on your chest to create a greater awareness of the movement of breath. 3. Inhale slowly and deeply through your nose. The hand on your chest should remain as still as possible, while the abdomen expands or rises toward the hand on your belly. 4. Exhale slowly through your nose or pursed lips and feel the abdomen move in toward the lower spine as you empty all the air out. The hand on your upper chest must remain as still as possible. 5. Repeat for a few rounds and eventually work your way up to 10 minutes or longer as a daily practice. Living more fully in the present moment as a meditation or mindfulness practice, rather than focusing on the past, helps us to be less emotionally reactive and overwhelmed by what’s happening around us, increasing calm and reducing stress and anxiety. • Lisa Brown, founder of Free Flowing Health, is a whole-foods, plant-based chef, certified Institute for Integrative Nutrition health coach, and yoga teacher servicing the SWFL area. Sensory Deprivation— How Floating in the Dark Will Ease Your Mind
By Lynn Brewer
5 Stress-Relieving Benefits of Floatation Therapy
Amongst the many benefits that have been proven over time, here are our top five reasons float therapy is so effective in relieving stress. 1. Floating Improves Sleep Quality: This is largely due to the absorption of magnesium during the float therapy session. Magnesium is an essential macromineral that keeps our muscles and nerves working optimally. It helps regulate mood and stabilizes our sleep/wake cycles. Unfortunately, our bodies do not produce magnesium. Magnesium deficiency is more common than we realize and can result in: • Interference with our body’s enzyme production • Increased stress and anxiety • Lower levels of energy • Disruption in our ability to fall and stay asleep • Compromised musculoskeletal system that makes us prone to injury and pain • Compromised nervous system The weightlessness, the complete and utter silence, and the total lack of sensory
stimulation during a float provide the perfect environment for our bodies and minds to completely unwind. This enhances relaxation, helping us sleep deeper for days following a float session. 2. Improved Cortisol Levels: Cortisol is involved in regulating metabolism and plays an important role in our body’s immune system functioning. Maintaining healthy cortisol levels is key to protecting our mental and physical health. Chronically high cortisol levels are a symptom of stress and often poor sleep. It becomes a vicious cycle—too much cortisol also contributes to sleep issues and other health problems, such as: • Poor regulation of blood sugar • Suppressed immune system • Weight gain, specifically around the mid-section • Gut issues like irritable bowel syndrome • Chronic anxiety 3. Floating Relieves Pain: As floating promotes vasodilation, enabling better oxygenation—better blood flow to the brain, organs, and limbs—it helps to minimize pain caused by tension, stress, and even arthritis. Magnesium is better absorbed through the skin rather than via the normal digestive tract, making it more effective to counter migraines, promote relaxation, and help lubricate muscles and joints. 4. Floating Relaxes Muscle and Accelerates Recovery: Floating helps to relax the muscles and accelerates the body’s natural ability to recover by reducing lactic acid in the body. The zero-temperature, magnesium-saturated water allows the lactic acid to move out of the muscle faster when relaxed, thereby reducing overall muscle stiffness and pain.
“The weightlessness, the complete and utter silence, and the total lack of sensory stimulation during a float provide the perfect environment for our bodies and minds to completely unwind. This enhances relaxation, helping us sleep deeper for days following a float session.” —Lynn Brewer
37 SUMMER 2022
loating, sensory deprivation, and restricted environmental stimulation therapy (REST)— all essentially the same thing with different names—can improve mood swings and sleep regulation after 8–12 float sessions. When floating, your body and mind will go from normal alpha and beta brain waves to transform into theta waves. These waves are usually only present right before falling asleep or waking up. Basically, being in the theta state helps us reach a level of calm we don’t generally experience otherwise during our waking hours. Theta brain waves are much slower than alpha and beta waves, allowing for deeper relaxation and reduced stress.

5. Floating Reduces Anxiety and Depression: According to scientific studies, every hour spent floating can help reduce anxiety and depression by reducing blood pressure, heart rate, and cortisol levels. This in turn eliminates fatigue and stimulates dopamine release, a natural mood enhancer. Floating can induce similar meditative states as well.
Floating Improves Posture to Reduce Stress
The body becomes stressed when it is not functioning properly. The posture of one’s body is important because it determines how the body functions. For example, the lungs are positioned in the ribcage and if the ribs are unable to expand due to restricted movement, then a lesser volume of air enters the lungs. Less air into the lungs means less oxygen into the body, which in turn increases stress on the body. The heart and circulation are also affected by the body’s posture. A “slumped forward” posture puts additional pressure on the heart, slightly limiting the amount of blood moving into the chambers of the heart, leading to impaired circulation. This situation lessens the body’s ability to heal from stress. The most common side effect of poor posture are tight muscles. When the body’s bones are not in proper alignment, some muscles have to work harder to ensure that the body stays upright on two legs. A person with a forward head posture will most likely have tight muscles of the neck or upper back. Other common areas for tight muscles are the low back and legs. Tightness and pain are major stresses on the body. The alignment of the skeletal system is very important. Helping improve the alignment of the bones corrects the body’s posture. which in turn allows for improvements in function and a reduction in the overall stress on the body.

Treatment for Sinusitis—Without
Antibiotics By Steven R. Frank
I
Glad you asked. The problem is two-fold. First, you are fighting what is a symbiotic relationship of fungus and bacteria with an active agent that kills only the bacteria. Second, the active agent you are using to kill the bacteria kills only some of the bacteria. Those that are not susceptible to your chosen antibiotic will take over the feeding grounds of the ones you have killed, leaving you with a fauna of germs that you cannot kill. Your sinuses are host to many fungi. They thrive on the muco-polysaccharides (mucus) that line your sinus passage and produce exotoxins that irritate the sinus membranes. The fungi act as a platform of insulation upon which the bacteria live and thrive. The bacteria can digest the conversion of the mucus by the fungi and live on top of them. In this manner, they are insulated from your immune system and isolated from the drugs you would take. You need
Natural Remedies to the Rescue
Clinical studies have shown that an enhanced aqueous colloid of silver of 35 parts per million or more can terminate sinus infections in a week or less. What’s more, it can be sprayed directly into the sinuses, so it doesn’t have to be taken systemically. You apply it only where the infection is occurring—in your sinuses. To reach the deeper sinuses, it is best to use a Neti pot. You can fill your sinuses with the solution and then close off your nose with your fingers. Sitting this way for 10 or more minutes will kill more bacteria and fungi than a week’s worth of antibiotics. Since you have a sinus infection, mucosal flow is significant. This will flush the antimicrobial from the area in less than 10 minutes. If it’s not there, it’s not working. It is paramount to the success of this therapy that you spray every 20 to 30 minutes. Using the Neti pot in the morning and evening for 10 minutes is also advised. Bacteria and fungi can double in number every 20 minutes. If you don’t spray regularly and use a Neti pot twice a day, all progress you’ve made each day will have been in vain as they are reproducing faster that you’re destroying them. Once you have cleared the infection, regular spraying and Neti potting can be done to keep an infection from returning. For this prophylactic protocol, you should continue to use the Neti pot once a week and the sinus spray a few times per day. •

What’s a Sinus Sufferer to Do?
an antifungal to attenuate the population of molds (fungi) that inhabit your sinuses. It is also important to choose an antimicrobial that kills all the bacteria. Each type of antibiotic kills only a portion of the fauna, leaving the survivors to take over the sinus tissue that the depleted bacteria have abandoned. You want a broad-spectrum antimicrobial that kills all types of bacteria as evenly as possible, so you don’t just kill the weaker ones.
ESSENTIAL Naples
f you suffer from chronic sinusitis and have been through multiple courses of antibiotics, you know the ills of this approach. Antibiotics may leave you with intestinal problems and yeast infections while only getting rid of the sinus infection for six months or so. The next time it comes back, you have to try a different antibiotic, this one likely costing you more and making you feel worse. Why is this cycle escalating? Why aren’t you winning the war even though you’re frequently winning the battles? Because the antibiotic solution does more harm than good, shifting the fauna and flora of bacteria in your sinuses to those not so easily killed by the antibiotics, leaving you with a more formidable foe after each round. Additionally, the antibiotics are taken systemically, meaning they are coursing through your entire body when you only need them in your sinuses. This distorts all the fauna all over your body and can lead to a yeast infection.

Can CBD Really Help
By Stacy Bull
“The Arthritis Foundation found that people with arthritis who have tried CBD report noticeable pain relief, sleep improvement, and/or anxiety reduction.” —Stacy Bull
C
annabidiol, commonly known as CBD, is a naturally occurring non-psychoactive compound found in hemp plants. Unlike its cousin, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC Delta-9), CBD has no intoxicating effects as we typically see with THC-based products. CBD interacts with the receptors in our endocannabinoid system (ECS), our largest receptor system in the body, that is being studied at a rapid rate due to its relatively recent discovery and identification in the early 1990s. We find that CBD and minor cannabinoids such as CBG, CBN, and CBC are outperforming other compounds and do not produce the side effects that are caused by THC. Inflammation is the process by which your body protects you from infection but, if unregulated, can lead to disease. Symptoms include redness, swelling, pain, and stiffness. Chronic inflammation has been linked to diseases like heart disease or stroke and may also lead to autoimmune diseases.
CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties are involved in regulating various functions in a number of areas that can be associated with sleep, appetitive, pain, and immune system response.

Studies have suggested that CBD has pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory properties, and research shows that when inflammation becomes chronic and lasts too long, it causes damage in your body’s cells and tissues. This can lead to health challenges that often grow more serious the older you get, and in fact, it may even speed up the aging process. The Arthritis Foundation found that people with arthritis who have tried CBD report noticeable pain relief, sleep improvement, and/or anxiety reduction. Products to consider include taking CBD by mouth or on the skin. Since ECS receptors are

found throughout the body, dosing and interaction within the system changes as the form of the product changes. For example, using a topical lotion works best in a targeted area, while an oil-based tincture works best across our entire ECS. CBD that is swallowed, whether in capsules, food such as a gummy or liquid, is absorbed through the digestive tract. Absorption is slow and dosing can be tricky due to the delayed onset of effect (generally one to two hours, but sometimes longer). CBD can be absorbed directly into the bloodstream by holding liquid from a spray or tincture under the tongue (sublingual) for 60 to 90 seconds. Effects can be within 15 to 45 minutes, working much more quickly than a gummy. Since taking CBD by mouth works best across our entire ECS, it can be the preferred method as an overall anti-inflammatory daily supplement for pain relief, sleep improvement, anxiety reduction, and/or digestive issues. Topical CBD products, like lotions and balms, are applied to the skin. Topical applications can give faster effects for pain-relief, anti-inflammatory properties, and added moisturization. Common conditions include joint, arthritic, and nerve pain, dry skin, itching, eczema, psoriasis, and shingles. Given CBD’s potent antioxidant, anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, and anti-inflammatory properties, it’s a perfect ingredient to add to skincare and beauty products. Recent research has indicated the critical role of the ECS in maintaining skin homeostasis and barrier function. CBD could potentially help in various skin disorders like dermatitis, itch, acne, hair growth/loss and hyper/hypopigmentation. CBD users are noticing positive results from CBD skincare products including reduction in wrinkles, managing sebum production, and healing skin cells quicker aiding in healthy and glowing skin. CBD products are not a cure or treatment but are intended to help keep you feeling more like yourself. As always, we recommend starting a conversation with your physician before taking any CBD products, especially if you’re on any medication. •

ue to injuries, mechanical issues, or overuse and aging, cartilage may be damaged or lost, resulting in pain. Even if patients have already had joint replacements and all medical options have been tried, correcting the muscle mechanics and alignment can often give a good amount of relief. And although orthopedic surgeons are brilliant when it comes to joint replacements and other surgeries, they are not usually knowledgeable and would probably even be skeptical of the following natural corrective procedures.
Regenerative Medicine for Cartilage Wear or Tear
• Stem Cell Allograft: In times of injury the body recruits its own stem cells for repair and healing. As we age, our own stem cells become less efficient. The addition of millions of young, potent stem cells from an allograft helps the body heal like it did when it was younger. Allograft is a tissue donation and transplant from one person to another. Connective tissue from one source containing live mesenchymal stem cells may help with inflammation and regeneration of cells in a recipient. Wharton’s jelly is a connective tissue from which umbilical cord stem cells are derived. The allograft has nothing to do with the baby; it comes from the umbilical cord from a healthy birth. The umbilical tissue could either be discarded or preserved for medical benefits. The tissue contains no antigens so there is no rejection and no matching required for the recipient. The allograft is administered with a simple injection and there is no downtime after the procedure.
• Placental and Amniotic Fluid Allograft: While Wharton’s jelly contains 7% by volume mesenchymal stem cells and 93% other growth factors, the placental allograft contains no live stem cells but 100% growth factors. While this application doesn’t work quite as well as the live cells combined with the growth factors, if it is done more than once similar results and outcomes can be obtained. • Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP): Platelets from your own blood draw are concentrated and injected into the site of needed repair. There are many techniques for concentrating the platelets, and your own platelets release growth factors in the area to also assist in regenerative healing. The younger and healthier the patient, the healthier the platelets will be, and better outcomes can therefore be expected. • Prolozone Therapy: A proliferative mix of vitamins, natural sugars, and ozone are combined to cause a reduction in inflammation and stimulate tissue repair. • Viscosupplementation: This process uses hyaluronic acid molecules. There are many hyaluronic acid products available that are commonly used to cushion and lubricate the joints. The natural fluid within the knee joint space is normally high in hyaluronic acid molecules. As we age, the concentration of these molecules is reduced; therefore, the addition of these products can help the joint move better and feel better for a time. Examples of these products are Genvisc, Hymovis, Hyalgan, and Synvisc. These products will do nothing to regenerate or repair the joint, however, and the results are temporary.

• Mechanical Issues: There are 13 muscles that cross the knee joint. These muscles must work in unison to properly move the joint. Some muscles may become too tight and other muscles may become weak over time. The imbalance of tightness or weakness accelerates wear and tear on the joint. There are very few practitioners who are skilled in diagnosing then lengthening the tight muscles and strengthening the weak muscles. To complicate matters further, there are 12 muscles that cross the ankle and 16 muscles that move the hip. When walking, these muscles also play a role in the mechanics of the knee joint and must also be considered. Four nerves from the low back innervate the muscles that move the knee. Nerve function and back function therefore must also be considered in a complete knee rehab regimen. • Alignment: Many patients with knee pain may have worn out only the inside or only the outside of the knee joint. This happens due to muscle function and the actual alignment of the joint space. The lower bone or shinbone (tibia) may rotate inward, outward, or straight back. The malalignment of the joint causes excessive stress and accelerates degeneration and damage unevenly through the joint. The key is early detection before the malalignment becomes permanent.

Has Your Physician Told You Type 2
Diabetes Can’t Be Reversed?
SUMMER 2022
By Denise A. Pancyrz
“The better we maintain our health, the better we can ward off illness or lessen its effects.” —Denise A. Pancyrz

hen a type 2 diabetes patient hears it’s possible to reverse diabetes and stop all medication, the excitement is palpable. Physicians hesitate to stop or reduce dosages because too often physicians and patients alike see a disappointing outcome when a patient tries to reverse their diabetes but never seems to achieve it long term. A realistic view of reversing diabetes is essential. But does it mean it’s not true? Of course not. To cure is to restore health, soundness, or normality; to bring about recovery. Remission of an illness is a stage during which symptoms are much less severe. The term “reverse,” however, is to turn completely about in position or direction, to effect reverse movement. If a patient can be in remission or cured from cancer, why is it not thought possible to be able to reverse the effects of type 2 diabetes?
happen in life that can take you down a path where you no longer make health a priority. Fighting diabetes is an extremely difficult proposition. Learning to heal changes your journey to reversing type 2 diabetes. To heal takes effort, time, and dedication to bring your body back to or toward optimal health. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic disease. This disease is usually a part of a cluster of health problems: • High glucose • High blood pressure • Abnormal cholesterol or triglyceride levels • Weight gain or loss Consider the journey you embarked on to reverse type 2 diabetes. Were you successful? Did you eliminate or avoid medication as you hoped? Did you achieve success for the first several months only to find yourself back to where you started? Was your doctor right? What went wrong?
The human body is amazing. It has the innate ability to heal when properly treated and cared for. The better we maintain our health, the better we can ward off illness or lessen its effects. But our health is fluid; it changes. Something may
The most common mistake is dieting. Dieting to reverse diabetes is a short-lived action. When we improve and see better results, we tend to go back to our previous lifestyle or were unable to identify the steps needed to remain successful.

HAPPENINGS SUMMER 2022
ESSENTIAL Naples
This is most likely why your physician doesn’t buy into reversing diabetes. Many of their patients just can’t seem to do it. But it may be that following someone else’s diet may not work for you. It’s important to note that your health is unique to you. Therefore, your healing process needs to be just for you. Proper healing from diabetes should not be a food elimination process. One of the biggest challenges that a client shared was, “Until now, there was no roadmap to help me put the pieces together.” Bringing in food that you enjoy and that supports healthy glucose levels and overall health is part of the roadmap to healing. It’s necessary to get your body into a healing mode by implementing small, healthy habits. This takes time and consistency. Getting to know how your body reacts to food, exercise, sleep, and avoiding stress will help you to achieve success. Following ill-advised guidance from someone encouraging you to reward yourself with food that spikes your glucose must be avoided. Giving your body the time to heal and reverse the effects of diabetes is a must to be successful. How long does it take? That answer is different for everyone. It’s very exciting to see better glucose readings. But that is not the time to quit fighting—it’s the time to continue pushing forward. Education and awareness, with the help of the right lab tests, have a place in reversing and healing from diabetes and realize you are working on your overall health as well. The ability to reverse the effects of diabetes is not an issue, because it is possible. Finding success is in the customized roadmap set for you to improve and achieve your health goals. Take it from someone who has done it. •

F
rom the day we are born to the day we pass on, there are many important milestones in our financial lives that are triggered as we age. Here are some of the more important ages to keep in mind: BIRTH: Welcome to the world! An infant can be named as a beneficiary in a 529 account or as the owner of a custodial savings or investment account. Age 18: At age 18, a child is no longer subject to the Kiddie Tax, unless they are a full-time student. Age 21 : If you have a custodial account for your child, this is when your name as the custodian must come off and the child now has the right to manage and access the account. All grown up! Age 24: A child who is a full-time student is no longer subject to the Kiddie Tax. Age 26: Adult child may lose parent’s health insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Age 50: Congratulations! You are now eligible to make catch-up contributions to retirement accounts like your IRA, 401K, 403B, or 457 plans. Age 50 is also the age disabled widows/widowers are eligible for Social Security Benefits. Age 55: You are now eligible for catch-up contributions to Health Savings Accounts, as well as eligible for penalty exceptions for certain withdrawals from retirement accounts. Age 59 ½: What a milestone! After many years of saving, you are now eligible to withdraw from IRAs and possibly other retirement accounts without penalty. Age 60: Survivors are eligible to claim Social Security benefits as a widow/widower (early, at a reduced rate). Age 62: Another noteworthy milestone! You are eligible to claim early Social Security benefits, which will be at a reduced rate. Many individuals choose to wait until their Full Retirement Age – between the ages 66-67 depending on your birthdate.
Age 65: Eligible for Medicare, assuming timely
application. Age 64 and 9 months is the start of the Initial Enrollment Period for Medicare. Age 66: If you were born between 1943 and 1956, this is the Full Retirement Age (FRA) for Social Security Benefits. Age 66-67: For those born between 1955 and 1959, your FRA for Social Security Benefits is as follows, 1955 – Age 66 & 2 months, 1956 – Age 66 & 4 months, 1957 – Age 66 & 6 months, 1958 – Age 66 & 8 months, and 1959 – Age 66 & 10 months. Age 67: For anyone born 1960 or later, this is your Full Retirement Age (FRA) for Social Security Benefits. Age 70: If you haven’t started taking your Social Security benefits yet, now is the time! Age 70 is the age for your maximum benefit amount. Age 70 ½: This used to be the important age in which Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) from retirement accounts needed to begin. The law changed and for those who reach the age of 70 ½ on January 1, 2020 or after, the new RMD age is 72. Age 72: For those born after July 1, 1949, age 72 is the age when Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs) begin. I hope you enjoyed this quick trip through the ages!
