Taking just a little time can have a big adventure payoff
Can I get a mulligan? What a week. Technical difficulties, deadlines, work piling up....but you know what that is like. In the midst of the chaos, we had some really nice weather and got a little outdoor time in It's all in how you roll with the punches right? Onward!
Things are really heating up around here. The MOORE Momentum magazine I do for Chris at the MOORE Expo is almost finished. Please take a peek at the ode to the overlanding community he shared on page four I am so thrilled to be able to have this opportunity and this community is better because of Chris and his event Good job, man
Getting a huge amount of content out month after month is quite a job (that I love very much) and this month I felt the crunch of both the ice and time There are a few features that did not make it into this month's issue but there is so much good stuff inside in spite of that Look for a return of those features and more next month in our annual travel-focused issue.
If you didn't notice, KOAR tickets are now on sale, that was another fun thing to put together We are so happy to be able to accommodate more guests this fall with the addition of our satellite camp. There are still a few tickets left but you better hurry.
As always, we invite you to check out our events calendar (new events added!) and see the new items in our online store Thanks so much for your support, and please share this magazine with your friends!

"The growth and success of an event is often the result of a strong vision, hard work, and dedication. It requires a deep understanding of the market, a willingness to take risks, and the ability to adapt and pivot when necessary. Above all, it requires a team of passionate individuals who are committed to delivering value and creating a positive impact for all attendees and the broader community.
The joy in planning for MOORE Expo is watching the way it brings people together playing an important role in building and strengthening relationships among individuals and communities. These events provide a platform for people to connect with others who share similar interests, values, and beliefs. They also offer an opportunity to learn about new safety practices, the latest gear and exciting ways to use it. Whether large or small, events that bring people together have the power to create lasting memories and positive change
I am committed to creating the best experience for our attendees by prioritizing their needs, expectations, and satisfaction. I will strive to deliver a high-quality event that is engaging, informative, and enjoyable for all participants. This includes thoughtful planning and execution, clear communication, and attention to detail throughout every aspect of MOORE Expo. I will actively listen to feedback from attendees and make necessary adjustments to ensure their experience is the best it can be. I recognize that the success of our event is measured not only by attendance and revenue but also by the positive impact it has on our attendees, their networks, and the broader community. As such, I will always approach planning MOORE Expo with a peoplefirst mindset and work tirelessly to deliver an exceptional experience for all."
usual, the event will be held in Springfield, Missouri, and there are a multitude of reasons why anyone interested in Overlanding, camping, or the outdoors in general should attend. As someone who has had the pleasure of sneaking around behind the scenes for the last couple of years, I can give you a number of things you can expect to see or experience at Moore Expo 2023.
One of the best reasons to attend the Moore Expo is the opportunity to see and learn about the latest innovations in Overlanding gear and equipment. The event features exhibits from a wide range of companies and organizations, showcasing everything from the newest technology to the most unique new inventions that can improve your trips.
With exhibitors like Midland USA, WeBoost, Blue Ridge Overland Gear, and more, you’ll be able to touch and experience some products that you may have otherwise only seen online.
Pretty much every category of gear is covered in the exhibitor line up from electrical setups, to comms, to camping trailers, to roof top tents, and tons of other things you probably haven’t even heard of before.
Coming to the Moore expo will give you some great opportunities to learn about innovations within the Overlanding space, new gear that’s coming out, and you’ll get to see it all in person. Climb up in that roof top tent you’ve been researching, check out that new trailer or bumper you’ve been considering, and talk to the folks that make or sell those things to see what they recommend to help you make smart use of your “build budget.”
Not to mention that all of the exhibitors are amazingly helpful and great to chat with about this hobby we all love
One of the main things I love about the Moore Expo is the opportunity to network with other professionals in the industry. The event attracts a wide range of attendees, including manufacturers, distributors, and suppliers, which makes it an ideal place to meet new people and connect with others who share your interests and goals.
Attending the event can provide a great opportunity to expand your professional network, learn about new job opportunities, and even make connections that could lead to new business partnerships or collaborations. By attending the expo, you will have the chance to meet and interact with professionals from all corners of the industry, which can be incredibly valuable for anyone looking to expand their career or business
Whether you’re a manufacturer looking for potential distributors or a company that produces or distributes Overlanding gear looking to build relationships with YouTubers and other content creators who can help test and promote your products, there are tons of chances to connect with them all at the Moore Expo
The Moore Expo opportunities fo Overlanding kno workshops, training sessions, and educational seminars These sessions cover a wide range of topics, including everything from first aid, to how to utilize GPS software to plan your trips, to recovery techniques.
Attending these sessions can help you develop new skills and knowledge that can be incredibly valuable for your future trips You will have the chance to learn from experts in each specialty while gaining valuable insights into new strategies and techniques for everything Overlanding related.
Finally, not only will you get to check out the newest gear, meet some great businesses, and see some amazing rigs, but you’ll get to experience the fun of a number of other special attractions that the Moore Expo boasts.
Want to get out and test your rig while experiencing the beauty of the nearby Ozarks? Check out the SMORR 2 MOORE Overland Rally Let area experts take you on an amazing guided tour that was created to allow everyone to get out and explore safely Enjoy this event with your friends and family and maybe make some new friends!
Tired from all the walking and exploring inside the expo center? Then take a load off at the Overland Addict Recovery Room with an adult beverage and some live music. Grab a bite to eat and relax on the comfy couches but watch out for the lazy YouTubers who often take up refuge in this area
Speaking of the YouTubers, there seem to be quite a few folks that you may have seen on the internet talking about Overlanding gear or sharing their trips, in attendance As you walk towards the entrance to the indoor expo center, you’ll see all of the Storytellers’ rigs lined up out front Want to check out your favorite YouTuber’s setup or ask them questions about their gear that you’re looking to purchase? Just say hi and chat away!
If this wasn’t enough to get you excited for the Moore Expo, then believe me when I say I barely scratched the surface of all the amazing things you can experience at this event Don’t take my word for it, get your tickets today and come check it out for yourself! Hope to see you there
grit and grace in the desert
"Looking back at these first memories of falling in love with the outdoors, I realized the common theme The outdoors embraces me and drives me to seek adventure without fear "
The Rebelle Rally is an eight day, all off-road navigation rally for women
The longest rally in the United States, it covers 2500+ kilometers on average, and crosses multiple western states to end in the Imperial Sand Dunes in Glamis, California
The route is unknown to the competitors until the morning of each day, and we do not find out the starting point of the entire competition until just a few months prior And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! There is so much to the competition it’s almost easier just to list it off: off-road, 2500+ kilometers, 8 days, map and compass only, no electronics or bluetooth devices, routes given each morning with about 1 5hrs to plot your checkpoints and decide your route plan, multiple routes across competitors, multiple maps and scales across each day, checkpoints you must find, checkpoints with nothing there, Michelin Star chef Drew Deckman - and that’s as much detail as I can give without giving too much away So, how do you even begin to prepare for something of this magnitude? For me, I realized the most important part was going to be finding a teammate: enter my dear friend Lisa Addington

A look back and reboot of an article from the August 2020 issue.
In a recent All Things Overlanding video about a quick trip to Wisconsin, Fletch defends the idea of an eight hour one-way drive from Indianapolis to the northwoods of Wisconsin for a
weekend trip. We all dream about that epic week or weeks- long road trip but the reality is that most of us are strapped. Strapped for time, money, or by family obligations Don't let that stop the fun Carving out a few hours on a weeknight or a long weekend with friends can satisfy the wanderlust between the long trips Here at Northology Adventures, we are all about adventures of every size Life gets hectic, schedules are full, obligations are many, sometimes a short jaunt is just what you need
The microadventure concept was popularized by British adventurer Alastair Humphreys, who coined the term in his book "Microadventures: Local Discoveries for Great Escapes". Humphreys advocated for people to seek out new experiences close to home or in their own backyards, and to embrace the spirit of adventure no matter where they are or what their circumstances. "Alastair Humphreys is an English adventurer, author and motivational speaker. Over a four-year period he bicycled 46,000 miles around the world. He was a National Geographic Adventurer of the Year in 2012." - Wikipedia
What's so great about a microadventure?
Experience something new: Whether you're exploring a new trail, trying a new outdoor activity, or camping in a new spot, microadventures offer the opportunity to experience something different and step out of your comfort zone. Connect with nature: Microadventures can provide an opportunity to escape the hustle and bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in nature.
Improve your physical and mental health: Improve your physical health by getting fresh air and exercise Being in nature can also reduce stress and improve your mood
Strengthen relationships: Going on a microadventure with friends or family can be a great bonding experience Sharing new experiences and overcoming challenges together can help strengthen relationships and create lasting memories
Affordable and accessible: Microadventures are a great option for people who want to get outdoors and try something new without breaking the bank or traveling far from home. You can plan a microadventure that fits your schedule and budget, and still have a great time exploring and trying new things.
A microadventure is a short and simple outdoor adventure that is easy to plan and doesn't require a lot of time or resources. It's a way to break up the routine of everyday life and experience something new and exciting without having to take a lot of time off work or spend a lot of money.
"That's too far to travel for just a weekend trip."
Amazing things can happen 4-8 hours from home. Hit the road after work on a Friday and drive off into the sunset. Okay, you may arrive at the campsite after dark, but this is prime time for stargazing, catching a meteor shower or even the northern lights. Have a nightcap by the fire and fall asleep to the sounds of wind in the pines, the loons, the waves or heaven forbid, a long night of seranading by whip-poor-wills.
The Saturday of the weekend microadventure starts with coffee at sunrise and a day of possibilities Should we take that twotrack up that mountain? Should we ride bikes on the beach? Should we try to find that waterfall? Should we go for a swim or a hike or a paddle? Should I just take a nap in the hammock? There are no wrong answers here Pack in as much or as little as you feel like doing Be flexible A rainy day may dictate exploring offroad trails or chasing waterfalls instead of the kayaking you had planned but having the means to improvise and the ability to not get frustrated by unmet expectations can make a huge difference in your enjoyment level
Saturday afternoon is when that feeling starts creeping in that the end of the weekend is closer than the beginning. Now is the time to reflect and cherish the moment. End the day at the campfire with laughter and toast to the new memories made and new places explored. Sunday may be bittersweet as you head home, heart full and travel weary, dirty, bruised, sunburnt but satisfied. Wallow in it, this feeling is what we live for.
Everyone has probably seen that quote by Henry David Thoreau and it still rings true today I believe he was talking about how being in nature can be calming, inspiring and empowering Of course, we can just call it a walk in the woods but in essence, it is the very definition of microadventure, a small measure of time doing something you enjoy in the outdoors Squeeze in a paddleboard session in the early morning. Go for a bike ride with your kid. Take the dirt road to the next town. You might see some wildlife, get some exercise, or strengthen a connection with your friends or loved ones.
Microadventures can take many different forms, from camping overnight in a nearby park, to hiking a local trail, to trying a new outdoor activity like rock climbing or kayaking. They can be done alone or with friends, and can last anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
"I took a walk in the woods and came out taller than the trees."

If you are in the northern Midwest USA and want to view the aurora borealis, here are some tips:
There are various websites that provide aurora forecasts such as the Space Weather Prediction Center. Check the forecast before you go out to increase your chances of seeing the aurora.
The aurora borealis, also known as the Northern Lights, is a natural light display that occurs in high-latitude regions near the Earth's magnetic poles. It is caused by charged particles from the sun, known as the solar wind, interacting with the Earth's magnetic field
The solar wind distorts and stretches out into a teardrop shape on the dark side of the Earth The solar wind collides with the Earth's atmosphere, exciting particles and causing them to emit light
The altitude of the particle interaction determines the shape and movement of the lights The colors depend on the type of particle being excited and the altitude at which the excitement occurs Oxygen atoms emit green and red light, nitrogen atoms emit blue and purple light.
The aurora is mostly seen in regions near the magnetic poles, such as Alaska, northern Canada, and Scandinavia, but can also be seen in other high-latitude regions Thanks again to our photographer friends who have shared aurora phots with us over the years, and who I hope will forgive us for sharing these again! Check out the end of the article for attributions and for where to follow them and other favorite content creators for more aurora shots!
The aurora is best seen in a location with minimal light pollution, so try to find a spot away from city lights
The best time to view the aurora is during the late fall to early spring when the nights are longest Also, aim to go out during a new moon or when the moon is not visible in the sky to avoid any interference
It is still really cold up north, even when it warms up during the day, it is cold at night from fall to early spring, so dress in layers to stay warm & comfy during your aurora hunting
A camera with manual controls and a tripod will best help you capture the beauty of the aurora but if a phone is all you got, go for it! Experiment with settings & exposures to get the best shots
Sometimes, the aurora can be faint and difficult to see with the naked eye, so look for subtle changes in the sky such as a greenish glow
In
2023, much of the northern tier of the US was treated to dazzling lights displays. Don't get left are predicted.SARAH MICHALS INFO COMPILED FROM UNIVERSITY OF FAIRBANKS GEOPHYSICAL INSTITUTE, NOAA, SPACEWEATHER COM, GREAT LAKES AURORA HUNTERS AND WIKIPEDIA
Voyageurs National Park: This park is located in northern Minnesota and offers some of the darkest skies in the state, making it an ideal spot for aurora viewing.
Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness: This wilderness area is another location with minimal light pollution and a great place to view the aurora
Grand Marais: This small town on the shore of Lake Superior is known for its dark skies and has even been designated as an International Dark Sky Community
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: This park has some dark skies and also offers stunning views of Lake Michigan
Headlands International Dark Sky Park: This park, located in Mackinaw City, has been designated as an International Dark Sky Park and offers guided aurora viewing events
Keweenaw Dark Sky Park: the Keweenaw Mountain lodge recently became a hot spot for star gazing and aurora hunting There are many places along the Lake Superior lake front (on M26 and US Hwy 41), in multiple county and state parks, and up Brockway Mountain; all of which are just a short jaunt away from the Lodge
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore: This park, located on Lake Superior, has dark skies and is a great location for viewing the aurora.
Newport State Park: This park, located in Door County, is another location with minimal light pollution and a good place to view the aurora
High Cliff State Park: Located on the shore of Lake Winnebago, this park has some dark skies and is a good location for viewing the aurora
Shawn HamachekThe best time of year to see the aurora borealis is during the winter months, from late September to early April in the Northern Hemisphere During this time, the nights are longer, providing more darkness for the aurora to be visible
In addition to the longer nights, the Earth's magnetic field is more inclined towards the sun during the equinoxes (around March 20 and September 23), which increases the likelihood of geomagnetic storms and auroral activity
It's important to note that even during the winter months, the aurora is a natural phenomenon and cannot be guaranteed to occur Other factors such as solar activity and weather conditions can also affect visibility It's a good idea to check the aurora forecast and choose a location with minimal light pollution for the best viewing experience.

USE A TRIPOD
Since you will be using a slow shutter speed, a tripod is essential to keep your camera steady and avoid any blurring
SET CAMERA TO MANUAL MODE
Manual mode gives you more control over your camera settings and allows you to adjust for the low light conditions
USE A WIDE-ANGLE LENS
A wide-angle lens allows you to capture more of the aurora and the surrounding landscape
SET YOUR ISO TO A HIGH VALUE
Start with an ISO of 800 or higher to capture as much light as possible without introducing too much noise into the image
USE A WIDE APERTURE
Open up your aperture to a low f-stop, such as f/2.8 or f/4, to let in more light.
USE A SLOW SHUTTER SPEED:
Set your shutter speed to a few seconds or longer to capture the movement of the aurora Experiment with different shutter speeds to find the right one for the conditions.
USE MANUAL FOCUS
Since autofocus can struggle in low light conditions, use manual focus to ensure sharp images
Shooting in RAW format gives you more flexibility to adjust the exposure and color temperature in post-processing
Take multiple shots with different exposures to capture the full range of light in the aurora and landscape.
Let’s secure public access to High Rock forever! Together we can help the DNR add 160 acres a critical outdoor recreation corridor to public lands at the tip of the Keweenaw. This parcel contains over half a mile of the Keweenaw Point Trail, almost half a mile of High Rock Bay Road, and more!
Although this land is currently used, there are no road or trail easements in place, and that means at any time those routes could be closed! KORC has worked over the last 3 years to secure a deal with the current landowner. The DNR has some funds reserved for this acquisition, but not enough to close the deal by March 31, 2023. KORC will be pledging funds donated by our members in December, but we still have more to raise to make up the funding gap.
That’s where we all step in and step up! Copper Harbor Trails Club and a private foundation have generously offered to match every donation dollarfor-dollar, so whatever you are able to contribute, your donation will be matched 1:1 by these funding sources!

"Canoecopia is the largest paddlesports consumer event in the world The Alliant Energy Center Exposition Hall is more than 250,000 square feet, and the main hall contains more than 100,000 square feet of kayaks, canoes, stand up paddleboards, outdoor equipment and clothing, with the best selection of the season, make Canoecopia a "must go" place for gear!"
-Canoecopia websiteCanoecopia. The real first sign of spring for paddlers and all the outdoorsy types. Each year dad and I would putter up and down the aisles, dreaming of Canadian wilderness canoe trips, chatting with old friends and making plans for the upcoming paddling season. I started bringing friends along and our yearly excuse to sneak away to shop and dream became a tradition.
I got into the overlanding world and we decided to market our Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat there in 2019. Jerry from Tembo Tusk had a booth and so did a few other car camper's favorite brands. I joked with show coordinator (and Rutabaga owner) Darren Bush about the similarities between canoe camping and overlanding. He said he should just dedicate a row for overlanders.
The pandemic dealt the show an awful blow, with the plug being pulled at the last hour in March 2020. Can't blame Darren for making that decision. I am sure it was a rough patch but it is great to see the excitement build for another run at it Maybe see you there

“Overlanding is driving somewhere remote, to eat something.” So why suffer? We show you how to eat like a king while sleeping in a tent. Jeremiah is back, now in his new studio in Lexington with a continuation of his series focusing on using 10 ingredients or less but using higher quality food to have a better overland camp meal experience These are fun to watch (and even better to be there in person to sample the goods, I know a guy) and great addition to your recipe box.
"From negative temps, to my firepit freezing to the ground, to my ladder frozen solid, there were a lot of lessons learned on this trip. Plus, I got to spend some time with some great friends and lots of laughs were had by all." Fletch visits the Wisconsin Overland annual Snoverland event and gets all he came for and more. From near-catastrohic black ice on the freeway to pizza-kicking festivities around camp (Austin's laugh is what sunshine and puppies are made of,) memories are made and Jason's high-angle drone footage is so satisfying. More, please.
Mark and Merri went to see the new Toyota models at the Chicago Auto Show. "This video shows all the "overland", or adventure buildable models, including the new Trail Hunter Tundra." I know some think that these two cheesballs are a bit much but seriously, their chemistry is undeniable and the goofy antics remind you of a favorite uncle you don't get to see enough. Plus they know their shit.
"the best offroad moab video for relaxing" -no capitalization, no punctuation, just a casual, laid-back approach to the oft-hyped, in-your-face, mashup of hardhitting music and carnage on red rock. What a nice change of pace. Braxton shoots a Gone Moab event, chock full of Nissans, this is Rogue Overland territory after all. This dreamy, soft, dusty rose shorty should be three hours long, you could play it on a loop and get that off-road ASMR experience all dang day.
"In this video I take the Land Cruiser up one heck of a road in a remote desert mountain range and then get buzzed by some advanced military aircraft! " Talk about a fun desert road! Tristan's offroad adventures are usually mild, to put it mildly. True, to get to some of the remote places he explores can sometimes involve some sketchy two-track but he is more likely to hike in an extra mile or five to avoid any perceived uneccessary risk. It was super satisfying to see him excited about completing this journey successfully, and the views are stellar.
