Sheringham Nursery School and Children’s Centre says farewell to Dr Julian Grenier

Trying to summarise Julian Grenier’s impact at Sheringham Nursery School in a few sentences is – to put it rather bluntly – impossible. However, looking back at Julian’s tenure over the last decade, there are a few things that stand out.

Julian was recently awarded a CBE for his contribution to early years education in the UK, which has spanned three decades. His expertise as a practitioner, researcher, school leader and inspector has helped the school to secure three ‘outstanding’ judgements from Ofsted since 2013. Through their work as a Research School with the Education Endowment Foundation, Julian and his team have

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTERISSUE 69 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE 2 NEWS

established a thriving hub of evidencebased practice, which in turn has seen the school recently win a bid to become a Stronger Practice Hub. While these are huge achievements, providing high quality early years education for the children at Sheringham is always at the forefront of Julian’s thinking and decision making.

Julian’s calm and thoughtful leadership was crucial in enabling the school to navigate the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic. While, for many, the world of work seemed to slow down during this time, the work of the nursery school

increased tenfold. Not only did the school remain open, supporting some of the most vulnerable children and families in Newham, but families at home were also provided with helpful videos to support them to continue with children’s education, while staff delivered materials and resources to people’s doors. Julian and his team demonstrated both innovation and unwavering determination throughout this time, serving as an anchor for the local community.

The sector-wide celebratory response to Julian’s CBE award reflects his reputation as a key national expert in early years education. The school was also recently acknowledged with a Civic Award from Newham Council, to recognise the role it played in the community during the pandemic. While there are many other examples of accolades and achievements that could be listed here, it is Julian’s unwavering positivity and his ability to get the best out of people – whether that be children, families, or colleagues – for which he will be fondly remembered at Sheringham. We know that he will make a huge impact in his new role leading early years curriculum at Ofsted and wish him all the very best for the future.

Newham Schools Making the Stars of the Future

The Education Act 1981 was the first major steps to developing the amazingly inclusive schools we see today. None more so than the brilliant schools in Newham.

By creating environments where everyone can succeed, we open up opportunities for everyone to follow their dreams. I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Ellen Goodey, to hear how being part of mainstream education in Newham helped shape her story.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTERISSUE 69 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE 4 NEWS

Ellen was part of the first generation to be able to attend any school of their choice. Ellen attended St Stephens Nursery and Primary, Plashet Secondary School and NewVic.

At that time, Newham schools were leading the way for inclusion with some of Ellen’s friends leaving other countries, such as Holland, specifically to come to Newham schools.

Throughout our conversation, Ellen talks fondly of her time at school, attending the same school as her brother and her friendly

and kind nature ensured she quickly made friends for life. Ellen met Shannel at primary school at the age of nine and was very proud to have been her maid of honour when Shannel got married in 2015. Ellen recalls always

enjoying school getting involved in everything and always felt the schools she attended were friendly, open and proud to have Ellen as a student.

From a very young age Ellen had a passion for drama and acting. One of her fondest memories of school was being a part of the Oliver Twist production; this was, however, just the start of the acting bug for Ellen.

Ellen met her now husband, Allan, at the Blue Sky Actors organisation, just one of the many extracurricular groups that Ellen belongs to.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER5 ISSUE 69 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE NEWS

Ellen has a huge amount of acting experience, including performing in a play called My Move, which ran for three months; she co-wrote, co-produced and codirected The Princess of the Graveyard Palace with her father and even performed

it at our very own Stratford Circus. Ellen performed at Queen Elizabeth Hall with her dance company, Corali, and has also taken to the little screen and appeared in a number of television programmes.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTERISSUE 69 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE 6 NEWS

It’s not just the arts that inspire Ellen, it’s also the chance to give back to the community which has helped and supported her. Ellen worked at Tunmarsh School, one of Newham’s PRU’s, supporting children with special needs; she has worked at MENCAP, the national learning disability organisation, for 10 years, supporting people to help them build a happy life. Ellen became the face of a MENCAP advertising campaign in 2019.

Throughout my conversation with Ellen three things really stood out, Ellen’s love and gratitude for her family’s support, her amazing friends (and social life) and her fond memories of her time at school. Ellen provided me with a wonderful

presentation about her life, reflecting on many things including the Olympic torch passing right under her flat. On the subject of “How Did I Get Here” Ellen credits being

included in mainstream school and colleges, her amazing support network, and her loving family as part of the reason she has made it to where she is today. I suspect she was always destined for stardom the support just helped push her there a little quicker.

My conversation with Ellen made me proud

to be even a small part of the difference schools make on a daily basis, whether a teacher, a governor, a support service, an admin officer or a teaching assistant, everyone plays their part in ensuring the next generation can go on to bigger and better things than the last regardless of their circumstances. If it were not for the amazing levels of inclusion within our schools perhaps Newham would have one less superstar to count among its alumni.

THE EDUCATION SPACE - NEWSLETTER7 ISSUE 69 - PREPARING CHILDREN FOR THE FUTURE NEWS
I’ll leave you with my final thought, life is short, if you can live it with even half the enthusiasm and passion of Ellen then you will have a wonderful life.

Nelson Primary School Wins Outstanding School Musical Department in National Awards

Newham, London 24.02.2023 - Nelson Primary, a highly acclaimed school in East Ham, has been named as having the country’s most Outstanding School Music Department at the prestigious national Music and Drama Education Awards last night.

The awards celebrate the extraordinary contribution made by individuals, companies, charities, schools and other organisations to the lives of others, through the medium of these two key performing arts. Schools were shortlisted from across the UK, with Nelson Primary being the only primary school

reaching the final six. In awarding Nelson the top prize for its outstanding music department. The panel of expert judges were “impressed by the number of musical opportunities available at the school, commenting on the different ways that children can get involved. They highlighted the progression routes available and said that this department is an outstanding example of committed individuals and supportive senior leadership working together to achieve both musical and wider outcomes.”

“Being named the country’s most outstanding school music department is a fantastic achievement that recognises the commitment and passion of Nat Dye, our music leader and all our staff, but also reflects the enthusiasm, hard work and desire to learn, that we see every day in all our pupils,” said Fiona Cullen, Head Teacher. “We are absolutely thrilled, and look forward to building on this success, helping our children achieve their musical ambitions in the months and years ahead.”

Nelson’s annual 5-day music festival offers an inspiring opportunity to bring the wider community together to celebrate music and artistic learning – showcasing all five choirs and 50 piece symphony orchestra. It involves all children across the school, as well as many teachers, visiting teachers and musicians, to

make, create, share and celebrate music, and push creative boundaries. Uniquely, it is the only state school in the world to teach Vina (a traditional Indian instrument). Children from Nelson Primary School also performed at this year’s Music for Youth Proms at the Royal Albert Hall for the third year running, celebrating their musical excellence and also having a mind-blowing opportunity to recognise the power of music to see their future possible selves.

The school has worked closely with Newham Council’s ground-breaking Music Enrichment Scheme for Schools and with Newham Music, the award-winning Music Education Hub for the borough.

Antipodean Professor Helps Teachers in Newham Schools Make Learning ‘Visible’

Newham Learning was pleased to welcome world-leading educational expert, Professor John Hattie to the Old Town Hall in Stratford. The audience of 150 school leaders and teachers from over 50 schools heard him talk passionately about his research into how to make learning ‘visible’. Teachers travelled from surrounding areas, with some even making the journey to Newham from Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Professor Hattie’s work summarises research from across the globe and helps teachers to understand what works best in their classrooms.

Sally Norris, current Chair of Newham Learning said, “Today we

harnessed the power of multiple institutions working together. We explored innovative, evidence based approaches to providing children and young people with rich learning experiences.”

David Bailey, Director of Newham Learning said “It was a pleasure to listen to Professor Hattie. His work has been instrumental in shaping previous projects that have helped improve pupil results significantly.”

One of the other leaders present commented “Professor Hattie was great to see, it was helpful to hear about practice based on robust research. There were lots of aspects that would support teaching in my setting, especially teachers reflecting in a purposeful way, with a focus on the experience of the learner.

Another leader remarked, “It was great to get back to discussing teaching and

learning after what we’ve dealt with over the past few years. It feels like we’ve turned a corner.”

Professor Hattie, originally from New Zealand, has been Director of the Melbourne Education Research Institute at the University of Melbourne since 2011.

Newham Learning was formed in March 2020 and is a collaborative partnership of 41 schools, based in Newham. In the first three years of the partnership they have developed a strong school improvement offer which runs alongside 7 core communities for subject specific networking and support. These include Computing, Science, Languages, SEND and Attendance. You can find more information about the partnership on their website:

We have an exciting opening at our new Connaught Special School for a driven, ambitious and customer focused School Operations Manager.

As one of the first administrative support staff employed at the new school you will play a key role in working with the Head of School and senior leaders to shape the excellent administrative function that will support staff, pupils and parents.

Initially the Connaught school will open at a temporary site at Upton Cross Primary School (Kirton Road site) whilst the permanent site is constructed at its new home on Royal Road (a short walk from the Prince Regent DLR station) during the 2023/24 academic year.

Our ideal candidate will be naturally organised, able to use their initiative but also know when it is best to work collaboratively. The post holder will receive support and guidance from our central support teams in all aspects of the role. Together we will ensure that a highly organised administrative function focuses on the right areas at the right time, enabling the Connaught Special School’s senior leadership team to focus on delivering excellent education to our pupils.

The role will be full time, 52 weeks per year and 36 hours per week.

Learning in Harmony recognises continuous service from other Trust’s and LA maintained schools.

As an employee of the Trust you will have access to our Perbox employee benefits scheme, offering discounts at major high street retailers, and access to an online wellbeing centre.
