ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE... AND WE’RE BACK ON IT Urban Stage opened its doors to our first students in 2003, and 18 years later we are thrilled to say that we are opening a new door. Urban Stage Minis is for students aged 2 - 4 years, running on Tuesday and Saturday mornings. Urban Stage Minis will explore and develop a young student’s creativity and imagination through drama, singing and dancing, as well as being a wonderful introduction to the basic skills of the performing arts. After our enforced absence face to face, we’re also delighted to be back in the rehearsal room with our junior students, ages 5-11 years old, who are rehearsing towards their production of “The Wizard of Oz” and our senior students, ages 11-16 years old,

HUMANISING THE FACE OF HOMELESSNESS Everyone knows the feeling when you get a haircut; it’s a confidence booster, especially if it’s been a while. I’m Jackie McColl, Team leader for the Haircuts 4 Homeless charity in the Manchester area. Haircuts 4 Homeless has been putting smiles on faces of the less fortunate since 2014 when it was founded by veteran hairdresser Stewart Roberts in Romford. I was honoured to be appointed Team leader for Manchester three years ago when the charity expanded to the north of England. There are over 60 projects supported by over 600 volunteer hairdressers and barbers nationwide. We use our hairdressing talents to make a difference. I can definitely say that they are the most satisfying haircuts I do. To see and feel the difference a haircut can make, engaging and building trust, chatting and having eye contact and giving them some dignity and confidence back - it’s amazing.

We work in a variety of projects, shelters and drop in centres for rough sleepers or live-in families who receive support in getting off the streets into their own accommodation. We’ve given over 40,000 free haircuts so far! Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we lost our funding when we couldn’t provide our services. It feels like we are rebuilding and starting again but we will definitely be bigger and stronger as we are inundated with requests from projects that we never knew existed. We need more volunteers to help out in the projects. All profits from the book will help fund the charity to carry on providing our much needed service.

oan Pomfret was born on 13th May in Darwen, Lancashire..At the age of fifteen, her family moved to Preston, where she eventually joined the Preston Poets' Society. Two years later, at age 17, she joined the Lancashire Author's Association. Soon after, she started winning poetry cups and became one of the first winners of the association's Battye Cup. Joan spent a short while in Worsley during the 1930's. Here she met Douglas Townsend, a young architect, and together they went back to Preston, where they married at the Church of St. Jude with St. Paul in 1937. After their marriage, they returned to Worsley. Over the years, she became better known as a dialect poet, helping to bring back the Lancashire dialect at a time when it was slowly disappearing. Peter Jones in his brief biography of Joan wrote: "It is indeed as someone who helped to bring back the popularity of Lancashire Dialect at a time that it was waning that Joan will go down in Lancashire history and that is a wonderful legacy but by no means the whole story." The Manchester Guardian had held a competition to write a poem, lamenting the passing of the 12 ON OUR DOORSTEP

barrel-organ. In its edition of 2nd March 1938, the results were announced. The first prize of two guineas went to Dr. F. R. C. Casson of St. Albans, and the second prize was awarded to Joan Pomfret of 2 Ryecroft Lane, Worsley. She won one guinea for her piece set in Harlem. Peter Jones then says that in 1950 Joan and her husband found a derelict farm in Great Harwood and decided to renovate it, along with another family, into two large cottages. The result was a stunning home with a wonderful view and a fitting place for a writer to live. Stoops Farm is its name and it is situated off Whalley Road, next to Great Harwood Golf Club. Her husband, Douglas, died in 1981, but Joan remained in her cottage where she died on 29th September 1993, aged 80. FROM COUCH TO 5K TO MARATHONS! We are GMCR Salford, a volunteer lead running community based in Monton. Set up by Guy in 2018 after he realised there were no free local running groups for beginners, the group slowly gained members and became more than just a running group. Members who came to learn then stayed to pass on their positive experience, celebrate their achievements and to share their stories, making friends along the way. Now the community is at over 400 members and counting! As our ‘bread and butter’ we offer a 10 week Couch to 5k programme which gradually increases running time and builds fitness and confidence along the way. With lots of friendly faces to offer support,
many of our beginner members have said how they have finally been able to stick at running and achieve their goals! At GMCR Salford, we believe anyone can run and our members come in all shapes and sizes, ages and speeds with nobody left behind on runs. BUYING A HOLIDAY HOME One in ten British adults now owns a second home. For some it’s an investment and provides a rental income, for others it’s somewhere to escape to every weekend. In any case there are important things to consider before you buy. Why might you want to buy a second holiday home? Many people want a second home to be 'mixed-use' – that is they would like to receive rental income and also use it for themselves and their friends and family. How long can you live in the property? UK law does not permit you to live in a holiday home for 12 months at a time – you’ll need to decide what your permanent address is for council tax reasons. Council tax is lower on a secondary residence thus you could be a burden on local services if you were living there all year round. Is it easy to get a mortgage on a second or holiday home? It’s easier to get a mortgage for a second home than it is a holiday let property. Loans for the latter are available, but there’s less choice as you usually need a specialist lender. Interest rates also tend to be higher. Finally, any property that is less frequented than a primary home has a higher risk of burglary. That is why a standard home that is empty for more than 30 days usually requires unoccupied home insurance. Renting out your property can help to reduce this risk, but it is extra important to take precautionary security measures so ensure that you have a specialist holiday home insurance policy in place. “PLACES FOR EVERYONE” Proposed Housing Developments in Mosley Common The highly controversial “Places for Everyone” development plans (formally known as the Greater Manchester Spatial Framework), have released a proposal for the development of 1100 houses on the land North of Mosley Common, land which is currently Green Belt. informing residents through door-to-door discussions and contacting various parties who could provide guidance and advice.
The development's consultation phase (which closed on the 3rd of October) allowed residents to “have their say” on the plans, however after extensive independent door to door dialogue, it was highlighted that residents knew little or nothing of the proposed development plans.
Although the deadline for the first consultation phase has passed, if the plans are approved, residents will still have an opportunity to oppose the scale of development during the second consultation. The volume of objections does make a difference, so it is strongly encouraged that people get involved and have their opinions heard before it is too late.
On Friday the 1st of October, a residents’ meeting was held. Conservative MP James Grundy, Labour councillors Barry Taylor; Paula Wakefield; Christine Lillian; Joanne Marshall, and circa 50 residents attended the event - all party representatives advised that they do not support these plans.

CRIME PREVENTION THIS WINTER The winter months are upon us and so are the earlier darker nights. We, your local Neighbourhood Policing Team, want to keep you safe by sharing a few simple and inexpensive precautions that can minimise the risk of being targeted by burglars or scammers. Use a timer to switch lights on to give the impression someone is at home. They are available from your local hardware stores. Lock all doors and windows whenever possible. Make sure all valuables in a car are hidden, and don’t forget to lock the car. Keep keys and valuables out of reach from cat flaps or letterboxes. Look out for your neighbours, especially the elderly and vulnerable. Register property free of charge on Immobilise.com, so property can be returned to the rightful owner if recovered.
Work with neighbours to set up or join a Neighbourhood Watch scheme, details can be found at www.ourwatch.org.uk. Alternatively set up a WhatsApp group to keep each other updated.
Top Tips: If possible, have a house alarm and/or CCTV fitted as this could act as a deterrent from your house being burgled. When visited by doorstep callers; remember to always check ID. If something doesn’t feel right, tell them to leave, or call a relative or neighbour for their second opinion. Door Service: Do not buy an item or service at the door, they could be genuine but they could also be engaging on your sympathy to receive money. Good News... Your neighbourhood Policing team took part in Operation AVRO, a highly visible force-wide operation within Greater Manchester. Greater Manchester Police will bring extra resources & specialist officers into a different district each month to launch a major strike on crimes and issues that communities are concerned about. Officers took part in the seizure of cash, drugs, stolen property and even supporting the RSPCA rescuing exotic birds. The Neighbourhood Policing team looked at tackling anti-social behaviour around the Walkden Town Centre. ALLOTMENT UPDATE

THE PLOT This autumn, we had a very pleasant surprise when our apple crop was picked. What we thought to be a crab apple tree produced the most tasty and juicy dessert apples. It had never fruited in previous years, but we now have a firm favourite and will be giving the tree a much needed winter pruning. Unfortunately, we can’t be too excited about our huge fig crop - the figlets have arrived too late in the season to mature and we will probably need to remove all of them as they are too small to use and can’t possibly mature. Climate change has certainly upset that workhorse. However, our sprouts and cabbage plants are loving the weird weather and bubble and squeak with sausages and our own onion gravy is a great winter favourite! The polytunnel has given a great result with our Harlequin peppers - very colourful and delicious on salads, not in the least bit fiery definitely a crop for the future. Our winter onions are settling in trays for planting in the raised beds, probably ready for cropping in spring. Our outdoor experiment with the same onions planted in an outdoor raised bed will tell us whether to grow indoors or outdoors in future.
SALFORD ALLOTMENTS UPDATE Salford Allotment Federation held their first postCovid, liaison group meeting with the City Council in October. It was good to be able to have a face to face gathering, even though our Zoom chats had been useful and maintained some momentum. Many matters needed following up after the Covid delays and several sites have now progressed: Beechfield,Swinton: Bellway have now released the monies for improvements to the area. The Council is planning for works to proceed as soon as possible. 26 ON OUR DOORSTEP
The release of some allotment area and reallocation of new lands is under discussion and the Council must approve the package before contractors can move onto the site. Blackleach, Walkden: All of the old piggeries have been demolished and the site has been cleared. A new management committee has been appointed and a self-management agreement has been made with the Council. The committee is now looking to find a funder to help in the remodelling of the allotment plots. Poorlots, Cadishead: Prices have been submitted for the work planned but this scheme will need major funding and discussions with the National Lottery are in progress. Ordsall: Now has a new management committee and has completed a self-management agreement with the Council. All at the SAF wish the new team every success in their new enterprise. New sites: Some potential new allotment sites have been identified and the Council are in discussion with the Councillors to consider which should be given priority. Hopefully, there will be more plots becoming available in 2022.
JOBS FOR THE WINTER.. Protect tender plants outside from frost and windchill. Fleece, or a sheltered corner, is all you need to keep them from freezing but if you can take them inside, even into a cold greenhouse they will only need a gentle, occasional watering until spring. Check your plant pots for hidden slugs and snails. These pests will sleep anywhere they can, ready to ruin your plants as soon as it is warm enough for them to move. Keep an eye on the weeds, they only stop growing if temperatures are very low and will spurt and seed as soon as they are able. Shield beetles are getting more prolific. Remove immediately as they will eat young tender shoots and ruin plants very quickly. Order your onion sets, seed potatoes and early crop seeds now and ensure your compost, plant pots and tools are ready for action as soon as it is warm enough to start working your crops.
