Adopting older children and siblings
When people think of adopting, they often imagine a baby becoming part of their family. And sometimes that will happen – if the circumstances are right for the child and the adopters. But at an early stage of your adoption journey, you will get asked if you would be willing to adopt an “older” child or a sibling group.
Children aged 4+ nd it harder to nd families willing to adopt them. They may have spent a long time in unstable environments or in di erent foster placements - and we are looking for families that
there still would be so many rsts ahead - all those rsts with you as a family.
Sibling groups can also wait longer to nd an adoptive family. Finding the right home for a child is so rewarding, but it can be di cult; nding the right home for two or more is even harder. Adopting siblings can truly be amazing: a new family unit is built in one go – of course, with work and patience and love. You aren’t just adding to your family, you are keeping a family together.
If you think you could adopt an older child or a

SUPPORTING THE HOMELESS IN SALFORD
Emmaus Salford, located in the heart of Salford, is a charity that supports people who have experienced homelessness.
Our work is centred around our residential community, where people who have experienced homelessness come to make a home for as long as they need.
People who join our community, known as companions, commit to working to the best of their ability in our community including our shops, food pantry, school uniform hub, and the running of the community itself cooking, maintenance, driving and gardening.
Work is an important part of the Emmaus ethos as it provides a focus and purpose each day, as well as an opportunity for personal development, plus allowing companions to directly contribute to supporting the running of our charity.
Whilst at Emmaus Salford, people access support, training and personal development to gain the skills and resilience needed to move forward positively in their lives.
The charity is not religious but has kept the name because of its symbolism. The biblical story which, describes how two men saw the resurrected Jesus on the road to the town of Emmaus, and so regained hope.
How to pronounce Emmaus, eh-MAY-uhs.
Want to get involved? We are always looking for reliable volunteers who can provide a minimum of four hours support per week, this includes driving, gardening, supporting our shops, upcycling, food pantry or school uniform hub.
We also welcome donations - monetary, food, furniture, clothing, or by fund raising.

SWINTON HERITAGE TRAIL
Many places have heritage trails, including a number of areas in Salford. Some are very prominent and hard to miss but when I speak to people about ours in Swinton, very often they are unaware of its existence. The reason for this is probably because the eleven bronze plaques that make up the trail are at ground level and people tend to walk over or past them without even realising they are there.
The trail was conceived by the Swinton Heritage Task Group, which is a community group of council representatives and local historians who currently meet quarterly online. Financing the trail was down to Section 106 money from Asda. When they built a car park for their new Swinton store, which opened in 2014, their development included building on the site of the burial ground of the former Unitarian Chapel that had been on Swinton Hall Road and for the privilege they were required to provide 106 money for community use.
Although people might overlook the plaques, there is a very prominent pink notice board near the Lancastrian Hall facing Salford Civic Centre that shows the locations of all the eleven plaques on the trail.
The plaques are located at the sites (or former sites) of:
Swinton Industrial School
St. Peter’s Church
Swinton Public Gardens*
Station Road Rugby Ground
Unitarian Church
Swinton Hall
St. Augustine’s Church
Clifton Hall Tunnel Collapse (Temple Drive)
Victoria Park
White Lion Pub
Chorley Road Rugby Ground
*The Swinton Public Gardens plaque is at the Garden’s entrance, which is on Chorley Road on the opposite side to the Police Station.
In the Gardens is a memorial to Noah Robinson (1826-1907) who has been referred to as the “founding father” of modern Swinton in a local history pamphlet written by Derek Antrobus, a member of Swinton Heritage Task Group. Noah, who occupied a number of key posts in our area, including being a Poor Law Guardian, a Chairman of Swinton Local Board and a Churchwarden at St. Peter’s Church, is also commemorated in several features of that church, including on its Lych Gate.
Sometimes there are opportunities to undertake guided tours of the trail, when further information relating to each of the locations can be shared, although each plaque has su cient information on it to encourage people to start to research our local Swinton heritage for themselves. There will be an opportunity for people to learn more about the heritage of this area, prior to its incorporation into the City of Salford in 1974, when Derek Antrobus mounts a free exhibition entitled “Celebrating Swinton and Pendlebury’s Story” at Swinton Gateway. This will commence 24th June and continue for about three months.

Networking in business. How does this make you feel?
Some business owners really enjoy networking, getting out and meeting new people. For some, just the thought of it actually stops them from attending events...and this is such a shame, as I see networking as one of THE best ways to grow your audience, grow your con dence and grow your business.
Hello there, I’m Janine Friston, founder of the Female Business Network, and I’m on a mission to help people network the right way, and go from “networking-hesitant”, to “networking-con dent”con dent in trying some new things, to challenging yourself and understanding how networking can, and should be part of your marketing and business strategy.
So, whether you’re experienced at networking, or new to this activity, I’d like to share some of my networking tips with you.
Top 5 tips for networking success
1) Don’t sell - if all you do is promote your business and sell, this turns people away. People generally don’t like being sold to. Introduce your business and how you help your clients. If people want to nd out more they can approach you to ask.
2)Have conversations - ask questions, listen, add value and have genuine conversations. This will also help you relax at the event.
3) Take a buddy with you if you’re nervous about attending an event. This will help you with that initial walk into the room. But, make sure that you don’t spend all of the event talking to your friend. Challenge yourself to speak with just one new

by Female Business Network
person at each event, and before you know it you’ll be growing your audience and becoming more con dent.
4) Follow up after the meeting - connect with and message people you’ve met at an event, maybe arrange to have a co ee or a call to get to know each other more. Start to build that relationship.
5) Be consistent - like all things in business, you have to show up consistently. So, make sure you attend as many of the group events as you can. People need to get to KNOW you, LIKE you and TRUST you.
And finally, have fun - running a business is the best thing, so enjoy meeting people, growing friendships, growing your community and growing your business as a result of networking the right way!
If you’d like to join a friendly online networking community, then the Female Business Club membership could be for you. We have members from the local area, as well as across the UK. So, if you want to network with friendly and supportive women in business, and get help in achieving your business plans and goals, then I’d love to welcome you into our community. Selling at auction
Selling at auction can have its advantages, it is a quick transaction with no opportunity for the buyer to negotiate or withdraw. As soon as the auctioneers hammer falls, exchange of contracts takes place.
If you are considering this, you need to think about the costs to you. You need to pay the auctioneer’s fee even if the property does not sell and if it does sell, the auctioneer will charge a commission. Unless a reserve price is stated in the contract, the auctioneer is bound to agree the sale to the highest bidder. This is important to think about and you should seek legal advice on before the auction.
A seller’s auction pack will need to be created and made available for potential buyers to review before the auction.
Buying at auction
You should arrange for your solicitor to review the seller’s auction pack prior to the auction. Your solicitor can inspect the pack and make any necessary investigations before you proceed. It is recommended that you also have the property surveyed prior to the auction as in all conveyancing transactions, it is a buyer beware situation (“caveat emptor”). Once the hammer falls, you are under contract and bound to pay a 10% deposit. Ensure you have nancing available if you are successful as completion is often 20 business days of the date of the auction and insure the property.
The above sets out the traditional method of an auction, but online auctions, often referred to as the
Widdows Pilling LLP
Buying & Selling Property at Auction
“Modern Method of Auction”, are becoming more popular. There are still risks as a buyer.
The modern method allows the seller to set out their requirements for the auction, such as the reserve price, start date and duration, normally 30 days. The seller will appoint an estate agent and as an interested buyer you will submit your o er online, in the form of a “bid”. You can usually bid 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The highest bid wins.
You may have to pay a participation fee, usually refundable. You may be asked to provide evidence that you have the funds to purchase the property should you be successful. Again, the sellers auction pack will be available to view, and your solicitor will check this before proceeding. In most cases you must pay, in addition to the purchase price, a non-refundable reservation fee, usually a minimum of 2.5% + VAT of the price.
If your bid is successful, you usually have 56 days to exchange and complete. The di erence to the traditional method, is that you do have the choice not to proceed, but you would lose out on your reservation fee paid.
In conclusion, if you are thinking of selling or buying at auction, it is best to discuss it with your solicitor before you proceed. At Widdows Pilling LLP, we understand the processes involved with selling and buying at auction and have the experience and expertise to guide you through the process.

Conservatories: Keeping Cool Summer 2023
by Emma Russell
During the summer, people want to make the most of their conservatories, the sunniest part of the home. However, if you have an older conservatory, you may nd that it is several degrees warmer than outside during the hottest part of the day. If it was originally constructed using glass panels or polycarbonate, these materials are now outdated and ine cient. Replacing your conservatory roof is not a cheap process, you will need to do some serious research. Make sure you contact a company who specialise in this type of refurbishment, and get a few quotes before you decide on a contractor.
In the meantime, here are a few suggestions on how to make your conservatory a ‘cool’ environment and enjoy it during the summer months.
Open windows and doors during sunny days to increase the circulation of fresh air. This may seem obvious, but a lot of people don’t like ‘drafts’ and will insist on keeping doors and windows locked tight. As long as you are in the house and keeping an eye on any possible intruders, allowing air to circulate will help cool the room during the hottest part of the day.
Vents could be installed to help control the amount of air coming into the room without leaving your
home vulnerable to intruders.
Blinds can keep out direct sunlight, this brings the interior temperature to a more manageable range. Internal blinds t between the glass panels of the double glazing, so they never get dirty or pucker. If you can invest in something that can be adjusted throughout the day, then you’ll have some control over the amount of sun you allow into the room. These can also be a stylish addition to your home, giving you an opportunity to update your décor and refresh the look of your conservatory.
Adding some cooling lm to your windows can be a cost e ective solution, prices start at around £20 per metre. Applying a thin layer of specialist lm will re ect up to 80% of the sun’s heat and harmful UV rays too. The application is quite di cult, due to the height of the conservatory, so make sure you hire a professional for the job.
A ceiling fan is a great way to circulate the air without compromising security. However, you may not be able to attach a fan to the roof of your conservatory very easily. Any kind of fan will do the job of moving the still air, whether it’s a desk fan or freestanding.
Making your conservatory look a little jungle themed is not just an interior decor statement, plants will absorb excess moisture and reduce humidity. Using a range of sizes and species will add interest to your space and add a little shade.
Finally, make sure your conservatory furniture is light, avoid leather seats and opt for lighter fabric soft furnishings. Add an ice bucket full of refreshing drinks, just to keep yourself cool too!

T HE CHALLENGES OF PLOTTING
by Geo Hamilton, Macmillan Cancer Support allotment volunteer and Acting Chairman of Tindall Street Allotment Group
Winter 2022/23 was a real challenge with the rain and spells of bitter cold, it certainly kept us inside, leaving plenty of plotting and tea time. The upside was in spring when everything, including the weeds, seemed to be determined too shoot up and show us what they are capable of and all our plants bene tted from the extremes of climate, it must have reminded them of how winters used to be.
Our ‘Kara’ potatoes were planted quite early and to our surprise, started showing their haulms earlier than we would expect, we quickly earthed them up, just in case another frost turned up late.
We had left our plum tree unpruned for a year to see if it would blossom and produce fruit and it made a spectacle of itself with the most beautiful oral display. We’ll see what the harvest is like when the annual fruit-fall nishes. Let’s hope the tree is not as ckle as the weather.
An unfortunate attack of vandalism damaged our shed and tools were stolen, but worst was the way our wildlife pond was destroyed by slashing the liner. All our tadpoles and other
creatures were killed overnight so that the only asset saved was our marsh marigold, which we salvaged and split to share with other allotmenteers who have ponds.
When we saw how early our plants were racing up we took cuttings of kiwi-fruit, gs and grapevine for growing-on, in the hope that we can pass them on to other plotholders.
One unfortunate consequence of our gooseberry bushes being attacked last year by ‘saw y’ is that we needed to net our bushes, but two of our current bushes were obstructing the area so we removed them and have now fully netted the gooseberries.
The broccoli, sprouts and various bean types have cropped very well and we now have oregano, hot chilli peppers, basket of re chillis and a whole range of tomatoes. At the moment our onions, garlic and pumpkins are fattening up well and our various types of lettuce are keeping us and our neighbouring plotholders’ chickens and ducks well fed.
This year has been another ‘wait and see’ time with so much uncertainty that we can’t help but enjoy each visit to the plot to see what’s new today.

G et Fit For Summer!
5 EASY STRATEGIES FOR GETTING BACK INTO THE FITNESS HABIT
As summer approaches it can sometimes feel like we’re coming out of hibernation as we peel o the layers of woollies and emerge blinking into the sunlight. The arrival of longer, warmer days can also make us dream of holidays, shorts and ip ops, yet such pleasant thoughts can be tinted with some anxiety over how much weight we may have gained while squirrelled away in our homes as winter storms battered the window panes.
If you’ve been wondering how to kick start your tness regime but the thought of a treadmill or cross-trainer makes you want to dive back under the duvet with a bag of jam doughnuts, then don’t panic. When you look at tness as being a lifestyle choice rather than a part-time hobby or 30-day challenge, your mindset changes and you start to develop behaviours that will improve many areas of your life.
Here are 5 easy strategies to get you into the fitness habit.
1. DON’T CHANGE TOO QUICKLY
And don’t try to do too much too soon, you may just be setting yourself up for failure. Better to make small, incremental changes to your routine and gradually build up by choosing a couple of new healthy habits and practising them daily, such as drinking more water or getting an extra hour’s sleep.
2. FIND SOMETHING YOU LOVE DOING
Consistency is key if you want to get t. This means
you need to nd activities you love doing so you return to them again and again. If you love socialising with others, think about trying a team sport or doing a group tness class like Zumba. If you’re working out for the mental health bene ts, try activities that will help you relax, such as yoga or Pilates.
3. MOVE EVERY DAY
You have more than 600 muscles in your body that need to be worked on a regular basis to stay functional. By moving, you are strengthening your muscles, which improves stability, balance, and coordination. That doesn’t mean a 5k run every day or bench-pressing your own bodyweight. Simple movements like a short walk around the block or 15 minutes of stretching exercises will do the trick.
4. GET OUTSIDE MORE
With the approach of Summer there’s no excuse for staying indoors. It’s always more pleasant to exercise in the fresh air plus being out in nature has brilliant health, tness and mind-boosting bene ts.
5. FOCUS ON THE PSYCHOLOGICAL BENEFITS TOO
Concentrate on how you feel rather than how you look. This might mean being less out of breath when you climb stairs, sleeping better, or being more alert. Fitness is not always only about building muscle tone. Your age or current level of tness doesn’t even come into it, because you’ll nd that even small changes can deliver big results.
Getting t for Summer need not involve gut-busting, no-pain-no-gain routines. Follow these simple steps and although you might not see the melt fat o in one week, they will help ease you into a healthier lifestyle. And, of course, it will help you get tter and slimmer, too.

ON OUR DOORSTEP 31 I M P O R TA N T N OT I C E
Welcome to Titivate: My Breast Cancer Blog
A raw, honest and passionate account of my breast cancer journey to help other cancer warriors.
About me
My name is Gemma Fish, I have always been known by my full name since I was a kid and it’s stuck now! I’m the youngest of six daughters to my amazing parents, Linda & Graham, who are my absolute world.
My diagnosis
On the 17th February 2023 I was diagnosed with Lobular Breast Cancer in my right breast. The tumour was 6x8cm, it was classed as Grade 2 and it was Oestrogen positive but HER2 negative. My lymph nodes had also tested positive for abnormal cells - and so began my breast cancer journey.
For the rst time in my life I was so content and then this curve ball hits, but as with everything in my life I decided there and then that I was going to ght this head on. There was NO WAY that anything was taking the peace and happiness I’d nally achieved. It’s been a whirlwind of appointments with my army of consultants, nurses and specialists. In March I had a single mastectomy and16 lymph nodes removed. In April I started chemotherapy, which lasts a few months, followed by radiotherapy after....phew!
All the signs I ignored
Since I'd been pregnant with my daughter, my right boob had not been right, but as with most things I ignored it and fobbed it o as “pregnancy changes”.
As expected in pregnancy my boobs grew... but at very di erent rates and my right boob never caught up with the left. Then my beautiful Rosie arrived and life took on a completely di erent pace - a total whirlwind of bottles, nappies and zero sleep!
As my body started to return to its new normal post pregnancy state, once again both boobs behaved di erently; the right shrunk back to pre-pregnancy size, but the left stayed at its new size which was three cup sizes bigger!
Over time, my right boob continued to change. Each morning in the shower I would look at it and think about contacting my GP, but as with any busy mum as soon as I stepped out of the shower there was a million and one things to do and I promptly forgot until the next morning and repeat for the next 16 months!
FINALLY, in February 2023, on a random Wednesday morning, I rang the doctors and thankfully got an appointment that afternoon. O I went, convinced it would be nothing but with a niggly feeling that it wouldn't be. Once my GP had examined me, I could tell that this was serious. She completed an urgent referral and told me to be prepared...
I ALWAYS want to give something back
The support and care I’ve received from the Bolton Breast Care service has been absolutely amazing since Day 1. My rst task is to help raise money for a garden at the Chemotherapy Unit for patients, families, nurses, sta and volunteers to enjoy. If you’d like to help me fundraise, please visit:

Nectarine Crumble
Preparation time: 20 mins
Cooking time: 35-40 minutes
Serves: 6
Ingredients
For the fruit filling:
• 6 ripe nectarines (approx 800g)
• 50g granulated sugar
• 1 tbsp cornflour
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
For the crumble topping;
• 150g plain flour (or 100g plain flour and 50g ground almonds)
• 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into small cubes
• 75g granulated or demerara sugar
• 50g rolled oats
• 1/4 tsp salt
• Flaked almonds
Method
Preheat your oven to 180°C (160°C Fan) Gas mark 4. Lightly grease a 23cm x 23cm square baking dish.
Prepare the fruit lling: Rinse the nectarines, cut them in half, remove the stones, and slice into 1cm thick wedges. Place the nectarine slices into a large mixing bowl.
Add the granulated sugar, corn our, lemon juice, and vanilla extract to the nectarines. Gently mix until the nectarine slices are coated evenly. Transfer the fruit mixture to the prepared baking dish and spread it out evenly.
Prepare the crumble topping: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the plain our (and ground almonds if using), cubed butter, granulated sugar, rolled oats, and salt. Use your ngertips or a pastry blender to work the butter into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the nectarines in the baking dish, ensuring that the fruit is fully covered. Add some aked almonds for texture.
Bake the nectarine crumble in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the fruit is bubbling.
Remove the crumble from the oven and let it cool slightly for 10-15 minutes before serving. Enjoy the nectarine crumble warm, preferably with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of crème fraiche.
If nectarines are not available, you can substitute with an equal weight of peaches or plums.
