Be A Mindleader

Several years ago, we made a commitment to focus more on mental health and get the conversations out in the open. Now, we are recommitting as part of the AdventHealth for Children and Heart of Florida United Way Be a Mindleader campaign (BeAMindleader.com) to spark more conversations around mental health. The goal of the campaign is to get curated, expert information into the hands of kids, parents, caregivears, coaches, mentors and teachers, and help facilitate life-changing conversations about mental health between children, teens, and the adults in their lives.

As a kid who was labeled moody, I knew something was not right by the age of 9. However, I did not know how to discuss what I was experiencing so I would just hide in my room until I felt better. As I have shared before, when I was a young mother, I was terrified I would lose my children if I ever sought help. And even now anxiety often rules my world. I mistakenly thought it would get easier as I aged, but the pandemic taught me that it can get worse.

Even with my background, I did not discuss mental health with my children. I would worry secretly if they showed any signs of distress, hoping they would not be like me. But I never had critical conversations. And that is a huge regret.

A Story Update

In our last issue we recognized several prominent cover stories, and we got one very wrong. We mistakenly reported that Sarah von Braun had lost her cancer battle. However, she graciously shared her current status with us: “I am happy to still be seeing my children with metastatic Stage 4 breast cancer! Every day is a gift! With METS Stage 4, I have survived way past the median life expectancy of 3 years. I’m at 5 years with the help of a great doctor (David Molthrop, MD) and his nursing staff. I have had several brain tumors radiated and bone procedures. I was expected to be in a wheelchair by March of 2021. Now, with a new chemo — no more brain mets! With continued chemo treatment every 3 weeks, I plan to love, support, and annoy my kiddos as long as I can.” We wish Sarah and her family many more opportunities to make memories.

The Florida Prize in Contemporary Art Is

a WINNer

One of the Orlando Museum of Art’s most popular and diverse exhibits celebrating nine years, the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art is organized to bring new recognition to 10 of the most progressive artists in the State of Florida. Each year, one artist receives a $20,000 award generously underwritten by local philanthropists Gail and Michael Winn.

ARTISTS RANGE FROM EMERGING TO

MID-CAREER, often with distinguished records of exhibitions and awards that reflect recognition at national and international levels. In all cases, they are artists who are engaged in exploring significant ideas of art and culture in original and exciting ways.

Gail and Michael have supported the event since 2017 and underwrite both the Florida Prize in Contemporary Art Award ($20,000) and the People’s Choice Award. It all started when they were approached by former museum director Glen Gentele.

“He asked us if we would like the opportunity to look at it. We did and got excited about it. We consider it our claim to fame here as we [the museum] are known statewide for the Florida Prize. Our curator is also known statewide for this. We were impressed by the whole concept of awarding deserving artists and then having an award that the people choose. Each year we really look forward to it so much, and we are so proud that we can show our friends in the community that we are doing this. We love the museum,” Michael says.

Gail adds: “And also support the art world. Mothers and grandmothers come up to me who have special needs children and they say to me, ‘Thank you so much

for doing this. It was so fascinating for my child.’ We are not huge art collectors but we just like the feel of the exhibit. And then reading about the works you really get an understanding about the artists’ thought processes, whether it’s about religion, political views, color favorites, or a passion for photography. The background of their creativity is so eye opening, literally.”

The selected artists present multiple works from recent years or large-scale installations created on-site that give visitors a fuller understanding of their vision and accomplishment. As a survey exhibition, the Florida Prize always brings together artists of diverse backgrounds and varying practices. It is a snapshot of the State’s cultural vitality seen through some of the most compelling work being done here and now.

This year’s artists include: Akiko Kotani, Amy Schissel, Cara Despain, Denise Treizman, Elliot & Erick Jiménez, Magnus Sodamin, MJ Torrecampo, Peggy Levison Nolan, Reginald O’Neal, and Yosnier Miranda.

It’s a very intense process where the museum’s curators spend a year visiting and interviewing artists. Some artists inquire directly, and others are found through connections with art schools and other entities. “They carefully select a vari-

ety of art — not just things to fill the walls. People will see there are all different types of art here. They also get the artists’ background stories. And they are not all young, struggling artists. Although for those who are, the idea that we can help start a career is really fulfilling,” Michael explains.

And the process is not only lengthy but prestigious as well. Curators from other notable museums are brought in to make the final winner selection. This year the curator is from the Crystal Bridges Museum of Art in Bentonville, AK, and last year the curator was from The Whitney in New York City.

The highlight of the show is the opening night Preview Party (held June 2) where 600 guests experience food and drink from area restaurants and caterers who present unique dishes inspired by each of the Florida Prize artists. It’s also an opportunity for guests to mingle with the artists, explore the art, and immerse themselves in the best social and cultural mix. Gail and Michael agree that one of the most emotional moments is when the artists are given the opportunity to speak and thank the patrons.

The exhibit will continue through August 2 7. omart.org/exhibitions/2023_florida_ prize_ in_contemporary_art/

CENTRAL FLORIDA VOCAL ARTS OPENS SEASON WITH A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC

With beloved musical numbers including “A Weekend in the Country” and “Send in the Clowns,” Central Florida Vocal Arts launches its 11th season with Sondheim’s romantic comedy A Little Night Music, with performances scheduled for August 18-20 at Alexis & Jim Pugh Theater at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

Recently named Company, Artistic and Stage Director Eric Pinder will lead a cast of the finest local performers in this piece that asks what happens to love when it is tarnished by time and man’s foolishness? He shares his excitement: “This is one of my all-time favorite musicals. It has not been produced in Central Florida in over a decade and even then, not with a full orchestra [Space Coast Symphony Orchestra].”

This season’s offerings are presented under the banner “where the voice takes center stage.” According to CFVA Executive Director Theresa Smith-Levin this tagline is meant to shine a spotlight on what the company does best — offer compelling vocal performances that inspire audiences. centralfloridavocalarts.org Photos by Gontran Durocher

ORLANDO SHAKES’ 35TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

Central Florida’s largest professional theater company, Orlando Shakes in partnership with UCF, kicks off its 2023-2024 season in August with Million Dollar Quartet; the true story of the day Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash and Carl Perkins jammed together at Sun Record Studios in 1956.

In September, Shakespeare and comedy lovers alike will be transported to Mardi Gras in New Orleans for a fun-filled take on Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors, followed in October by Boulevard of Bold Dreams, a dynamic story about the night Hattie McDaniel made Hollywood history by becoming the first Black artist to win an Oscar. In December, Orlando Shakes’ holiday tradition A Christmas Carol returns to warm the hearts of the entire family. orlandoshakes.org

“For 34 years, Orlando Shakes has entertained Central Florida audiences with some of the best comedies, dramas and musicals ever written,” says Jim Helsinger, who will be entering his 29th season as artistic director with Orlando Shakes. “To celebrate our 35th season, what better way to do so than to produce world-class work that makes you want to laugh, makes you think, and makes you feel.”

ORLANDO BALLET’S 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

Orlando Ballet’s 2023-2024 season reflects its 50-year history as well as its future as Central Florida’s premier professional dance company. Reflections is the celebratory launch of Orlando Ballet’s 50th season and offers a look back as well as ahead in terms of how the organization has evolved from its very humble start to become one of Central Florida’s leading performing arts organizations.

In December, Orlando Ballet will premiere a reimagined production of The Nutcracker. Supported by an elite dream team of designers of sets, costumes and lighting, this production will stay true to the traditional story of a young girl’s love for her favorite Christmas gift bestowed by the town’s toymaker. Artistic Director Jorden Morris pairs Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s classic musical score with entirely new choreography to create a fresh and whimsical experience, complete with giant snow globes, fancy mice, and a few highflying surprises.

Other performances scheduled for 2024 include Christopher Stowell’s The Sleeping Beauty; Director’s Choice featuring Heath Gill World Premiere: Stephanie Martinez’s “Dos Lados” and Jorden Morris’ “Deverell;” and Kenneth Tindall’s Casanova — U.S. Premiere. orlandoballet.org

Spa Invitational X: Less Pace, More Grace

A sellout event with little to no advertising, Spa Invitational is a fundraiser that keeps attendees entertained and engaged with an entire day of relaxing and pampering. This spring’s take on a golf tournament marked the 10th time since 2011 women have come together in support of Grace Medical Home.

Iam so proud to see Spa Invitational harness the power of so many fabulous women in our community to benefit an amazing charity like Grace Medical Home. An idea that started as a fun golf parity has now raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for women, children and families here in Central Florida,” says founder Sherry Magee, Senior Director, Community Relations, KPMG Lakehouse.

Her idea to take a traditionally male charity outing and tailor it to women with 18 holes of spa-inspired activities — plus wellness and arts sessions — was a winner from the start. Since the beginning, the Spa at Hyatt Regency Orlando has served as host and donated a day of services. But Sherry and the volunteer committee wanted it to be more, so they invited local vendors to set up for what they call

shopportunities, planned an inspiring luncheon, and ended the day with a 19th hole (in Rocks Lounge) wrap-up reception.

By the numbers it’s been an impressive 10-time run: 342 volunteers; 1,276 players; 10,000 nails polished; 1,300 massages given; 1,050 feet soaked; and 67 pop-up shops. For Grace Medical Home, it’s been a vital resource providing more than $400,000, which translates into 4,000 patient visits. It has also served to introduce community leaders to Grace’s mission. The organization that provides continuous, comprehensive primary care to the uninsured has seen 137,179 patient encounters with a value of care equaling more than $58 million.

According to Stephanie Garris, Grace Medical Home CEO, Spa Invitational has filled an important funding gap since the organization ended its own fundraiser, Let’s Say Grace, several years ago when it

relocated. “It was our only event, but when we moved it wasn’t feasible. And then we had the pandemic. What’s incredible about Spa Invitational is that it is just shy of what we netted from Let’s Say Grace,” she explains.

Most of the money raised is from sponsorships — Orlando Health is the presenting sponsor — foursomes and silent auction items. But this year a live auction and an ask were added at the luncheon.

“What brought tears to my eyes was the paddle raise this year. We had never done that before and to see the women giving to the mission was amazing. We were nervous about doing it. It was very humbling and inspiring to see. It’s transformational and life changing for our patients. I feel the same way about the Spa participants as I do about our patients in that we strive for a relationship with them and want to improve their health through those relationships,” Stephanie adds.

Next year’s event date is already set for May 17 and the committee will be gearing up again soon. “This could not have been done without the leadership of the host committee, and our amazing partnership with the Hyatt Regency Orlando and our presenting sponsor Orlando Health. Together, we dream storm every year to create a unique, fun and inspiring event! We can always use more committee members so if you are looking to make a difference, reach out to us,” Sherry concludes.

Talli Dippold’s Mission: MAKE HATE HISTORY

She’s been on the job as CEO of The Holocaust Memorial Resource and Education Center of Florida less than a year, but Talli Dippold has already made her mark in the community speaking about vital educational programs, participating in crucial conversations, leading a critical social movement, and sharing the vision for the organization’s future museum all in an effort to combat hate and enhance understanding.

TALLI’S EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE, PARTICULARLY IN EDUCATION, includes most recently serving as director of Holocaust Education Fellowship Program and associate director of the Stan Greenspon Holocaust and Social Justice Education Center at Queens University in Charlotte, N.C. Prior to that, she served as executive director of the Levine-Sklut Judaic Library & Resource Center at Shalom Park, where she led a task force that established the Stan Greenspon Holocaust and Social Justice Education Center.

She has learned the lessons of the Holocaust all too well — all four of her grandparents were survivors of the horrific atrocities. “Even though all four of them were Holocaust survivors, no one talked about it. It was just a thing that we were aware of, but we never heard stories from them. We just knew that we didn’t have extended family. They didn’t have parents or siblings,” Talli says.

It wasn’t until years later when the grandkids started asking questions, that some of the blanks slowly filled in. “My grandmother finally told us she had left

testimony with the Shoah Foundation, Steven Spielberg’s project at the University of Southern California. [More than 56,000 survivors have their video testimonies in USC Shoah Foundation’s visual history archive.] Then we started doing our own digging. As happens frequently with Holocaust survivors, they don’t really talk to their children about it, but once the grandchildren start to ask, they will open up,” she explains.

Talli believes this is because the children of survivors don’t want to bring up anything painful for their parents. “One of my grandfathers wrote a memoir, which helped us piece together the puzzle. But it was not because they were eager to speak about it. My mother was named after a sister my grandfather lost. She said they [the parents] have already gone through so much, they wanted to be easy children,” she adds.

Even without the knowledge of her grandparents’ story, she feels she would have ended up in this field in some capacity. “My passion comes from understanding what it's like to experience trauma.

Many of us have grandparents who had past traumatic experiences, whether it is war, poverty or race issues they don't want to talk about,” she says.

The Holocaust Memorial Resource & Education Center was founded in 1981 as the Holocaust Project of Valencia Community College and just as Talli was coming into the role, the Center’s founder and champion Tess Wise — a Holocaust survivor — passed away in October 2022 at the age of 99.

“It’s been a phenomenal 11-month period because this organization was so well known in the community and well-established. It was easy to step into the role even during the leadership transition. I could say I’m here and I’m here for the long run. The reason it’s been so easy is because Tess wrote the mission statement that is so universal, so timeless. Her desire to use the lessons of the Holocaust to fight all forms of hate is relevant. Many organizations have had to readjust their mission or change the way they do things. We have not had to. Our 35-year legacy is stronger than ever,” Talli says.

thelist WOMEN to WATCH
20 orangeappeal.com

And perhaps that’s because in this current cycle of divisiveness with pronounced hateful speech and actions, education, understanding and conversations are the key to bringing people together. “A lot of the hatred is being fueled by online platforms. It used to be if you had something to say, it was face to face. But now there is this entire underbelly that not only allows people to be anonymous but also to find other like-minded people. People turn to these platforms when they are disgruntled, when there are economic challenges, and when they feel democratic ideals are being challenged. Our mission is more relevant than ever,” she explains.

Talli sees education as the primary impetus for change – and that begins with school children. “We have the UpStanders program [a bullying prevention initiative] for them. We also want to help the educators. This summer we have a teachers’

institute to help educators find the best resources for their students. Even further, what we are hearing from the community is how to control how our children are using social media. As a society we are going to have to address some of these challenges,” she shares.

Talli is also overseeing the construction of the new 44,500-square-foot Holocaust Museum for Hope & Humanity on a prime lakefront site — South Ivanhoe Boulevard where the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce was headquartered. The City of Orlando was instrumental in the process of bringing this massive project to life. The museum will be designed around the stories of survivors to engage, teach and empower. The museum is partnering with the USC Shoah Foundation because of the shared mission to tell the story of the Holocaust through the voices of those who lived it.

“We are looking forward to the new museum being more centrally located for better access for students as well as tourists and community members. Downtown Orlando is an incredible gateway to culture, and we feel like we will be a wonderful addition to what already exists. We will always use the Holocaust as the lens through which we view other genocides and historic moments. And everything will be engaging and interactive — we are really building a museum for the next generation. The biggest challenge in building a new museum is operating the existing one — finding the balance between the need to be relevant in the moment and in the future. We want to resonate and be cutting edge years from now, but we are here to address the challenges of today,” she adds.

SHANNON

GRAVITTE:

Key Communicator and Community Leader

Shannon Gravitte grew up in Fairfax County, VA, outside of Washington, D.C., and dreamed of working in politics on Capitol Hill. She realized that dream early in her career and has since made smart, sometimes risky, career moves that gave her some balance while raising three children and a business acumen that she brings to her current position as Vice President of Government Advocacy for AdventHealth.

I“’ve landed in a place where I can marry all my skill sets to really shape an industry where I feel most at home and alive because healthcare is so critically important to everyone. We must constantly be sharing our stories, our challenges, but also sharing how we want to be a part of solutions in healthcare because it is a very complex industry,” Shannon explains. As a journalism major, storytelling and communication became the keys to her success. “I grew up watching C-SPAN. Most people find that the most sleep-inducing activity you could imagine but I was enthralled by it,” she admits.

At 25, she was hired as press secretary for Congressman Bill McCollum and recalls the exciting work that was mixed with long hours. “After I had my first child, Samantha, in 1997, I was afforded the opportunity to work from home on Mondays and Fridays which at the time was quite rare. That was a game changer,” she says.

When Bill McCollum ran for U.S Senate, he asked Shannon to come to Florida and run the communications for the campaign. After he lost the election Shannon thought she would move back to Virginia but landed a role in government relations and community affairs for Universal Orlando. It gave her a great opportunity to get to know the Central Florida community. This was in the aftermath of 9/11, so

she used her skills to ensure the solvency of the hospitality industry when travel fears were at an all-time high.

During her time at Universal, she had another child — her son, Carter — and again was looking for some balance. She had formed a great relationship with former City of Orlando Mayor Glenda Hood who had been tapped by Governor Jeb Bush to lead the statewide task force on domestic security. Glenda offered Shannon a contract position as a strategic consultant. “I had flexibility to raise my very young children and also lead some interesting and impactful work,” she adds.

After advising Bill McCollum with another political race, she opened the Florida office of Public Strategies (now Hill+Knowlton), where she applied her political campaign prowess to business in the private sector.

Shannon worked there for four years before taking her biggest career risk — running for Orange County Commission in 2008. She lost the election but says, “It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that provided me with the unique perspective of how well-intended elected officials can be disrupted by outside influences and political pressures. That was a monumental shift in my life and my career.”

“I now had my third child, Molly, and opened up my own consulting firm; again,

I was looking for some flexibility but also something new and different,” she continues. But after a while, she realized she was becoming type cast as a political strategist when she wanted to continue her professional growth as a public affairs strategist.

So, her next big leap of faith was into the transportation industry as Vice President of Government Affairs for Mears Transportation during a time when the industry was being disrupted by ride share technology. She had little experience in the industry but understood the critical role government advocacy played in ensuring the sustainability of a business in distress. “While that was something that I never would have envisioned me doing, it was an incredible learning experience. The only thing constant in the world of advocacy is change. If you’re not at the table you’re on the menu — meaning if you’re not at the table trying to shape positive change, others are going to do it for you and you’re probably not going to be happy with the results,” Shannon says.

Her history of relationship building led her to her current position with AdventHealth, where she navigates the intersection of business and politics for one of the largest healthcare systems in the country. “The healthcare industry is heavily regulated, and my role is to ensure lawmakers (one of our key stakeholders) understand

beauty body&spirit

our business as they are passing legislation that impacts not only our business but the patients we serve,” she explains.

Relationships and mentorships were key throughout her career and Shannon pays it forward through formal mentoring with Valencia Horizon Scholars — Take Stock in Children Program as well as mentoring women and men, personally and professionally, within AdventHealth and beyond.

Her best piece of advice: “If you’re good at what you do, honest, not afraid to take risks and learn from mistakes, you’ll go far. Be yourself, lead with purpose, and don’t be afraid to be vulnerable as a leader — this always leads to respect and trust, and nothing is more important.”

Shannon will share more of her story as a keynote speaker at the Orlando Women’s Conference being held Thursday, September 14 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

BITS & BITES

Big Taco Energy

After 16 successful years in Orlando’s food game, Meraki Food Group, the family-owned business behind Taverna Opa Orlando and Tapa Toro, is excited to welcome guests to Kavas Tacos + Tequila. The experience-driven Mexican restaurant at Pointe Orlando features 7,000 square feet, including four event spaces and two patios, perfect for weekend brunch.

“MEXICAN FOOD AT ITS CORE IS SIMPLE AND COMFORTING, AND THE CULTURE EXTREMELY VIBRANT

— similar to the Greeks — which is why we’re most excited to bring this new experience to International Drive,” says coowner Katerina Coumbaros. “Our team is forever on a mission to deliver the perfect balance of amazing food and entertainment. We achieve this by hiring great talent, importing the best ingredients, offering various options to meet our guests’ dietary needs, and creating high-energy environments that allow guests to let their hair down and enjoy life!”

Kavas Tacos’ menu includes Tex-Mex classics and playful takes on Mexican street fare inspired by the ambulantes (street food vendors) of Mexico City. Guests can kick off dinner with chill bar dishes like Shrimp Coctel and Ceviche, available with pescado or vegan style, and progress into antojitos like Classic Street Corn and Black Bean Empañadas. Next up, you can dip into Classic Guacamole and Queso Fundido followed by plentiful fajita options such as Surf & Turf and main plates including Mezcal Mango Salmon or Chimichangas. Coming in hot with BTE (Big Taco Energy) is a show-stopping 3-Foot Taco Board that includes a guest’s choice of 12 tacos. The menu consists of vegan and vegetarian options and sweets, including Coconut Tres Leches, Cookies + Horchata, and Flaming S’mores Taco. Dishes are available a la carte and family style.

Kavas Tacos’ bar features a wide selection of imported and local wines and spirits, including more than 150 tequilas. Specialty

cocktails include: the Un Poco Coco: coconut tequila, pineapple juice and lime; Saint Kavas: habanero tequila, passion fruit puree, agave, edible shimmer and flaming lime; and Mexican Spritz Tree: a flight of four spritz cocktails, including Mexican Aperol Spritz, Watermelon Spritz, Blackberry Spritz and Spicy Rosé. Boozefree options like horchata and agua frescas are also available.

Inspired by the vibrance and colors of Mexico City, local firm Tina Marie Interior Design used authentic Mexican fabrics, alebrijes and cacti to furnish the restaurant. Multiple private dining rooms and event spaces, named after Mexicana legends like Frida Kahlo and Selena, are available for large parties and meetings. Catering for all occasions and takeout is also available. kavastacos.com

Infused Tequila

AS LEGEND HAS IT, THE MARGARITA COCKTAIL WAS FORTUITOUSLY CONCEIVED AT RANCHO LA GLORIA HOTEL IN 1938. And in keeping with that spirit, distiller Rancho la Gloria added two new selections to its agave repertoire. Pink Lemondade is made with blue agave tequila infused with refreshing flavors of lemon zest and sweet Meyer lemon with a bright citrus finish. And Jalapeño Lime blue agave tequila infused with flavors of freshly sliced jalapeño and juicy key lime with notes of zesty lime peel and ripe green pepper, add the perfect amount of heat on the finish. Both flavors — available locally at Walmart liquor stores — have earned accolades including: San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Denver International Spirits Competition, Ultimate Spirits Challenge, and Chilled 100 Spirits Awards. rancholagloria.com

MAKE A SPLASH AT HARD ROCK HOTEL DAYTONA BEACH

One of our favorite beachside retreats is celebrating five years of rock ‘n’ roll right on the beach. You may have bypassed Daytona Beach in favor of more upscale beach retreats, but Hard Rock Daytona Beach features unbeatable amenities and is just a short drive away.

It was already a wonderful escape, but to commemorate its anniversary, the hotel has undergone some serious updates including a multimillion-dollar renovation with a focus on the popular pool deck, refreshed guestrooms and youth club, and revamped (it was already impressive) memorabilia throughout the coastal-chic retreat. The signature beachfront pool deck was reimagined to increase the overall size of the resort’s heart and soul of excitement and energy. The guitar pool (previously geared to kids) has been converted to a full-sized pool with an oversized hot tub.

Hard Rock Hotels are known for their extensively curated collection, and now the lobby showcases the one-and-only Madonna’s limousine featured in the 2001 43rd Grammy Awards. Other highlights include Elvis Presley’s

fringed vest from his 1955 performance at the Peabody Auditorium in Daytona Beach, and hip-hop pioneer MC Hammer’s sequined outfit from his Club MTV Spring Break performances in 1990 and 1994.

Rock hard this summer with Hard Rock’s sizzling Summer Escape offer. Save up to 20% on room rates for stays through October 31. Enjoy flexible check-in based upon availability. Plan your getaway or learn more at hardrockhoteldaytonabeach.com.

Easy Entertaining: Poolside Pizza Party

Tessa McAuliff | Florals: Shaun O’Dwyer Flowers

Summer entertaining should be as easy as pie. Pizza ovens are so popular now that hosting a backyard pizza party by the pool is the perfect theme for an evening with family and friends.

THE DECOR

• Rustic table decor: Keep things casual with black and white gingham napkins, woven placemats, burlap table runner, place cards with fresh rosemary, and a beautiful green and white arrangement for the middle of the table. If you don’t have time to get florals, big pots of fresh herbs down the table look beautiful as well.

• Monogrammed aprons and pizza cutters for each guest also serve as a take-home gift at the end of the night. Another take-home gift idea is mini pizza oil bottles filled with olive oil and fresh rosemary, which is perfect for roasting potatoes, grilling chicken, or even homemade salad dressings.

• Italian music playing in the background.

• Market lights and lots of votive candles.

• Lots of potted basil, fresh artichokes, tomatoes on the vine, and San Marzano tomato cans.

PIZZA BAR and GRAZING TABLE

• Set up a pizza bar and grazing table so guests can help themselves to antipasto while their pizzas are cooking.

• Antipasto platters filled with prosciutto, shaved parmesan cheese, marinated olives, roasted peppers, pasta salad, and fresh ciabatta bread. If you can’t make everything from scratch, buy some pre-made items from your local grocery store.

• Pizza toppings for your personal pizza include some of our favorites — pizza oils, fresh buffalo mozzarella, tomato sauce, roasted garlic, pepperoni, sausage and meatballs.

• Add a lemony Caesar salad with garlic croutons.

The Winter Park Road to All Things Design

How A Stretch of Orange Avenue Known as Designer’s Row Delivers Creative Synergy for Consumers and Merchants

From its origins as a horse and buggy byway to its modern-day, design-centric stores, the story of Orange Avenue in Winter Park encapsulates the city’s evolution from a sleepy winter resort town to highly sought-after real estate. Today, this concentration of desirable neighborhoods and designer homes is helping create market demand for professionals, products and services catering to design-minded shoppers throughout Central Florida.

Rebranded as Designer’s Row, today Orange Avenue is home to a wellspring of inspiration and resources for the home, including specialty showrooms, interior design, construction and remodeling expertise, tile, furniture, and home accessories.

Hattie Wolfe, a co-owner of Wolfe-Rizor Interiors, relocated her studio and offices to 935 N. Orange Ave. in 2008. “When we arrived, there weren’t any stores that catered to the design community. Over the years, design professionals opened stores and showrooms, creating a concentration of home decor businesses,” Hattie says. Wolfe-Rizor thrives on the synergy of nearby creative companies and the consumers they attract.

Another longtime business resident of Designer’s Row, Ted Maines Interiors, located at 1030 N. Orange Ave., serves as a convenient one-stop shopping experience for individuals interested in anything

from home improvements to full reno/ new construction design. “As a full-service firm, we get the opportunity to welcome people in to see our showroom and experience our style of design firsthand. It gives us a chance to explain what we can offer to potential clients, answer their questions about the process, and most importantly, make an impression and connection with them,” says Terry Smathers, Senior Designer, Ted Maines Interiors.

“Designer’s Row has matured into a phenomenal resource for both the industry and clients, attracting homeowners from all over Central Florida who want to access the best Winter Park offers in one place,” says Lori Bragg, Marketing Director,

S&W Kitchens. The kitchen and bath design and remodeling company resides near other design-based companies at 955 N. Orange Ave.

“Nearby designers bring samples from one showroom to the next to help coordinate materials with homeowners. Builders can find all their design services and materials on one street. These collaborations also help us identify trends and personalize them for our clients,” Lori continues.

Newcomer to Designer’s Row, Christina Marie Kairis, owner of Tina Marie Interior Design, is finishing renovations at her showroom, TMID Studio & The Atelier Boutique, with plans to open at 919 N.Orange Ave. this summer. The showroom features fur-

nishings, home decor items, window treatments, tabletop accessories, bedding, and gift items. She picked the location for its synergy with other complementary businesses. “I love the community element the most. We source our tile from Trinity with a quick walk across the street, then hang a left to head to Artisan, where they assist us with the most beautiful plumbing and fixtures for our remodels and new builds,” Christina says. She plans to launch a second collection on the website (theatelierwp.com), and has opened up her waitlist to accept new clients and projects. “There is a true love for art and style and design in this town,” Christina says.

Trinity Surfaces, at 958 N. Orange Ave., has a showroom selling tile, carpet and wood flooring. The company’s tile and surface experts serve the commercial and residential construction community.

As the only kitchen and bath showroom on Orange Avenue, Artisan Kitchen and Bath Gallery benefits from client referrals from neighboring businesses.

“Designer’s Row has become the area of Winter Park to shop for anything and everything for your home, be it new construction or remodel. Everyone respects each other’s businesses. We feed off one another. We like to keep the business local on Orange Avenue,” says Kelly McFall, Profit Center Manager at Artisan Kitchen and Bath.

The kitchen and bath showroom at 784 N. Orange Ave. won Best Small Business in Winter Park, presented by the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce. “Our kitchen design entry for Cheval Noir in Parade of Homes Orlando 2023 recently won First Place and Grand Award. And Artisan will celebrate its 7th birthday this October,” Kelly says.

Other design-centric stores along the street include Brianna Michelle Interior Design, a full-service custom design firm with a showroom and store, 1010 on Orange. Located in the iconic financial center on the corner of Orange and Minnesota, Brianna remodeled and conceptualized the space to showcase a curated line of home furnishings in partnership with Verellen that focus-

es on function and aesthetics. Also on the Row, Bespoke Furniture by Morrone Interiors, 784 N. Orange Ave., showcases a mix of custom and designer furnishings, artwork, home accessories and gift items.

While rising interest rates present challenges for the real estate market, home improvement and interior design services are reaping the benefits with an uptick in business. Companies on Designer’s Row see the higher costs to finance a home purchase as a mixed blessing for commerce and consumers.

“Rising interest rates have changed the economics for many clients who now find their historically low-interest rate mortgages are much more attractive than what the current market rates are, and therefore remodeling becomes a better option for them versus selling their homes and purchasing a new home,” Lori explains.

Whether you’re in the market for appliances, furnishings, fixtures or design services, Designer’s Row aims to be a one-stop destination. Merchants say the synergy benefits both customers and commerce

without cannibalizing each other.

“Each business on Designer’s Row has its specialty. I think I speak for all the specialty showrooms here, that we don’t want to be your one-stop shop for everything for your home. We all want to give our clients the best products and services that each of us knows best,” Kelly says.

“What’s great about the row is the diverse businesses around. Those shopping for services can meet several potential firms and get to know the designers. But for those of us doing the designs, having showrooms for flooring, tile, plumbing and furniture within walking distance offers convenience and time savings. Plus, our relationships with these vendors make the experiences even more enjoyable for us and our clients. It’s one thing to view rendered images of what your project may look like, but it is a whole different experience to see items in person,” Terry says.

FINDSOME & WINMORE

Kelly Lafferman and Kelly Rogers, CMO/ Principal and VP of Client Services, respectively, partner to manage client relationships and lead teams at Findsome & Winmore, a full-service marketing agency based in Winter Park. Their combined marketing experience has seen them work with local and global brands, real estate heavyweights, and even the 1996 Olympic Committee. But their passions outside the conference room have seen them embark on individual quests for professional (and personal) development.

For Kelly Lafferman, this meant heading back to the classroom and earning her MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Rollins College — a passion ignited after an impactful therapeutic experience of her own. This deeper understanding of clinical psychology has strengthened her connection to clients, all while making her a more thoughtful and empathetic leader at F&W and in her community. Kelly Rogers, on the other hand, recognized the critical role physical spaces can play in an increasingly digital marketplace and followed a personal passion to earn her certification in environmental branding. findsomewinmore.com

Their story: In 2018, we both participated in a summer internship in Atlanta. Throughout the summer, I was constantly talking about my favorite ice cream, Jeni’s, and Jack would always mention he’d been wanting to go. The last week of our internship, Jack mentioned getting a group together, but it turns out the “group” was just us. We chatted over ice cream for hours and the rest is history; we’ve been inseparable ever since.

Ceremony and reception: The ceremony was at my childhood church, First Presbyterian Church of Orlando; it was so special with two officiants that we’ve each grown up with. Our reception was at The Alfond Inn, and it was perfect, filled with so many thoughtful details. Favorite things included: the floral chandelier over the monogrammed dancefloor (which was constantly filled with guests dancing to the Buzzcatz), After the Tone voicemail guestbook, Jeni’s ice cream in honor of our first date, a confetti celebration during the last dance, and a football-themed after party. We’d love to give a shoutout to my mom, Jane McLean, the Director of Catering at The Alfond Inn. I know I’m biased, but I think most people would agree that she is truly the best!

Where they are now: We recently bought a house in Smyrna, GA, a suburb of Atlanta. Jack works in experiential marketing and I work remotely for an advertising agency. We have a labradoodle named Stella, who we adore.

Their story: It was the middle of the pandemic when a mutual friend decided Matthew and I should date. I was a new mom and skeptical, but Matt was different – as our friend promised. We both went to the same high school (Bishop Moore) but never knew each other. We hit it off instantly and after he met my daughter, I knew he was the one.

Ceremony and reception: Our ceremony was a beautiful Catholic mass at St. James Cathedral on 10/22/22. The church was decorated with gorgeous florals, and the reception followed at The Country Club of Orlando. Our décor was classic and romantic with white florals and candles. Our band was exceptional, and when my daughter and Matt danced a daddy-daughter dance, there were no dry eyes.

Personal thoughts: Hannah: I felt an overwhelming sense of peace the entire day. We truly had the best team, and I was so happy, grateful and excited to marry Matthew. It was such a gift to be surrounded by all our family and friends. Getting ready with my sister, my mother-in-law, my sister-in-law, and my girls was so fun, and the quiet moments I shared with my mom, my dad and my daughter are forever dear to my heart. Matthew: I felt ecstatic! I was truly on cloud nine all day with my stunning and gorgeous wife! My dance with Tara was super special too, and I am thankful we got to do that.

Where they are now: Matthew works as a payment consultant with Stax Payments in downtown Orlando. Hannah works as a senior recruiter with Shyft6, a business optimization consulting firm. Hannah and Matthew currently live in College Park with their 3-year-old daughter, Tara, border collie mix, Nash, and are expecting a baby, due July 2023.

The Wedding of Sarah Veasey and Devon Orand

Date: December 3, 2022

Decor Linens and Chargers: BBJ La Tavola Furniture: Event Effects and Gala Rentals Band: Finesse Party Band

Dance Floor Wrap: Letz Dance On It

Their story: Devon and I met at orientation of the Disney College Program. He says it was love at first sight for him, but I took a little bit longer to convince. We bonded over our love of theme parks, movies and traveling, and have been inseparable since we met in February 2017.

The proposal: We went on a trip to Disneyland and had an intimate proposal in our hotel room at the Grand Californian followed by a public proposal in front of the castle. Devon knew I wanted the proposal to just be me and him but he could not help himself and spontaneously proposed at Disneyland, Disney World, Tokyo Disneyland, and on the Disney Wish Cruise Ship.

Ceremony and reception: Our ceremony, reception and after party were at the Four Seasons Resort Orlando. We wanted our wedding day to be very welcoming for our guests and it was important that all our events that day were at the same venue. Our reception was truly a winter wonderland with beautiful trees, candles, and navy, silver and white touches.

Personal thoughts: I felt very relaxed and ready for the day! We did not have to rush at all with hair and makeup, even with deciding at the last minute to include a first look before the ceremony. This was one of the best decisions of the day since it helped both of our nerves so much and we could really enjoy ourselves and be present at the ceremony and get to go to our cocktail hour!

Where they are now: We live in Winter Garden with our two pugs, Peanut and Butters. I work at Disney World in guest relations and Devon works at UCF running their film equipment room.

Their story: Connor and I had a modern love story. We virtually met on Hinge (a dating app) in early 2019 and had our first date at M Lounge in Orlando. Connor was already planning date number two while we were still on our first date! We had an instant connection and many trips, memories and laughs later, we were engaged in the fall of 2021.

Ceremony and reception: Our ceremony and reception were both held at The Alfond Inn. The ceremony was on the center lawn and included a Persian ceremony (The Sofreh) as well as a Christian ceremony. It was so nice to incorporate my heritage (I’m Persian) into our special day. Our wedding planner Rae really made my vision come to life and we are so thankful for her! Our colors were emerald green, black and white with a modern but classic twist. Our gorgeous florals from Juan Carlos with RJ Glam made the entire room come to life and felt like an absolute dream! From the floral chandelier that had orchids cascading down to the beautiful centerpieces... it was magical.

Personal thoughts: I truly enjoyed every minute of wedding planning and just had fun with the process. Words cannot describe the excitement, joy, and happiness we felt on our special day and truly something we will forever remember. It was nothing but good vibes, happy tears, many laughs, and a whole lot of dancing!

Where they are now: Connor and I are enjoying married life, traveling lots, and could not be more excited to be welcoming our first baby this fall!

Their story: We met in December 2020, while I was doing makeup on one of my dear clients, Padgett McCormick. She asked me if I was single and if I wanted to meet this very nice man. So off I go on my first date, and that date never ended. We fell in love, and the adventures began… we walked the Camino in Spain, we navigated through COVID, and at age 59, I married for the first time!

Ceremony and reception: We wanted a vintage Hollywood vibe for our wedding, so we chose St. Augustine. The wedding was on November 11, 2022, the day after Hurricane Nicole hit St. Augustine. The rehearsal was cancelled as downtown looked more like Venice — the streets flooded, the Casa Monica Hotel without power, and airports closed. Late in the evening, we had an improv gathering at the Casa Monica with no power, no hot water, no hot food, only a few of our family members, lots of wine, almonds and cheese boards, making the best of it. Then our family from California walked in, the lights came on, the waters receded, and alas we were hopeful the wedding would happen.

Our day was perfect in every way. Our family and friends came from around the world to celebrate this moment. The ceremony at the Lightner Museum courtyard was beautiful and during our vows the koi fish from the pond jumped out with joy. The reception at Casa Monica had a spectacular sunset where we danced, we laughed, and we celebrated.

Personal thoughts: We were exactly where we should be with all our loved ones. In the wake of the hurricane, everyone travelled from near and far. We are truly grateful to all that made our day so very special. The next day we jetted off to Paris for our honeymoon.

Where they are now: Leslie is a professional makeup artist and owner of Studio CARA in Maitland, and after doing hundreds of brides’ makeup over the years, it was finally her turn. William “John” Slot is the Chief Innovation Officer for Lynx and the father of a daughter and son, both students at UCF.

Wedding Trends Industry Experts L ove

Larger live string ensembles (full quartets) again. Also, lighted dance floors.

We asked local industry experts to share some of their favorite wedding trends.

“Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue” added into the table settings for the reception along with handcrafted items to complete the design. This can be anything from family China and crystal to vases, place cards and table linens. Looking into family heirloom pieces to borrow, adding early wedding gift registry China patterns, or renting unique items from private collections adds that unexpected element.

We love it when our brides opt for customization. From pearl clutches with their new initials or wedding date on them to an outfit for every event (bridal brunch, wedding shower, welcome party, rehearsal dinner, farewell brunch, honeymoon, etc.). They’re creating new memories while staying true to their personal style.

Our brides are registering for great, easy outdoor entertaining and dining pieces — they want to use their gifts in their everyday lives!

With wedding trends always coming and going, some of our favorites that we are seeing now are mocktails and craft cocktails that are named after a couple’s dogs or other pets; couples opting out of large multi-tiered wedding cakes for a more fun and lavish dessert display, like our flaming doughnuts or a table of petit desserts and chocolates; and incorporating a family-style dinner service in lieu of a buffet or formally plated dinner.

I have seen a shift toward more color in florals. More brides are opting for colorful varieties over all-white bouquets. Also, LGBTQ weddings are still very strong right now — from large events to intimate affairs.
