On the cover is a woman who needs no introduction to South Florida: Lois Pope. She’s a person that comes along once in a century and can only be measured by the impact she has had on our community. Her fascinating life is a mission of love for others and her feature in this issue is a small testament to her life-long efforts.

THE WORLDS OF FINE ART AND FINE VEHICLES became one during a private Sunday brunch event at Braman Bentley Palm Beach. This past January, the doors of the exquisite showroom located at 2801 Okeechobee Boulevard were opened for guests to enjoy a curated buffet provided by Sandy James Fine Foods, and browse works of art—both automotive and otherwise—from noon to 2:00pm.

The distinguished luxury vehicles produced by the Bentley Motors facility in Crewe, UK. are often compared to works of art by Club Braman members.

The elongated swooping fender lines, high-quality craftsmanship, and literal billions of bespoke combinations owners may elect mean each and every Bentley is a venerable self-portrait of its driver. Of course, the fit with hand created pieces of artistry was a natural one.

Five local artists’ work was on display, as well as historic selections from the Fine Arts Conservancy restoration lab. As Club Braman invitees tickled their taste buds with bagels and lox, mini honey-chicken waffles, lobster rolls, and top round roast beef sliders, their eyes

took in masterworks produced by Mehri Danielpour, DUAIV, Carol Calicchio, Peter Hansen, and Melissa DelPrete.

The soft soundtrack throughout the event came courtesy of pianist Mark Bornfield, and the requisite brunch bubbles available through the open bar included Charles Heidsieck Brut Reserve champagne, CrossBarn by Paul Hobbs Chardonnay, Sonoma Coast 2020, and Tolaini “Vallenuova” Chianti Classico 2019, curated by Master Sommelier Virginia Philip.

Bronze sculptures, abstract and impressionist paintings, and photorealistic landscapes were all on display throughout the showroom, juxtaposed with Bentaygas, Continental GTs, and Flying Spurs of all colors. Attendees could meet with the artists themselves to discuss their personal history and inspirations, as well as choose which new Bentley would look best in their driveway. Between the wine, delectable bites, gorgeous artwork and peerless motorcars, guests were treated to an inimitable experience which undoubtedly set the tone for the rest of the coming year.

IT HAS LONG BEEN HUMAN NATURE to protect the world around us. Ours is one full of interlocking relationships— from the photosynthesis process taught in elementary school to the bond with house pets cherished as fullfledged members of the family. Because of this, there remains a constant need for some to speak for the voiceless flora and fauna that cohabitate the planet. For the past 13 years, that responsibility has been embraced by Dr. Robin Ganzert, President and CEO of the country’s first and oldest humane organization, American Humane.

Under her direction, the organization’s mission of ensuring science-based, ethical treatment for animals has flourished like never before in its long, illustrious history.

Having already built a career in social work, Dr. Ganzert was personally recruited to head up American Humane in 2010. While the group’s prestige intrigued her, it was meeting with the late Betty White—and the close friendship that continued until her passing—that convinced her to take the helm. From the moment of her appointment, Robin dedicated herself to the 24/7, on-call duties the position requires.

American Humane’s efforts extend far beyond fundraising and supporting local animal shelters. Robin has directed rescue efforts in the wake of natural and man-made disasters. On the heels of the Fukushima nuclear plant accident, American Humane funded three shelters for affected pets in the area, with Robin braving potential radiation poisoning to personally direct the effort. This past year, she led the charge to save as many animals as possible from the catastrophic flood waters of Hurricane Ian.

Robin’s hands-on commitment embodies American Humane’s mission, dating back to its original founders saving and caring for war horses fresh from the battlefields of World War I. However, she has also expanded awareness of these objectives by helping produce the award-winning documentary Escape From Extinction, narrated by Dame Helen Mirren, and the Pups4Patriots program uniting Wounded Warriors with loyal service dogs.

Robin’s lifetime dedication to service found a natural match at Braman Motorcars. She recognizes that the staff across the Braman Motorcars campus are representing something much larger than themselves—characterized by a recent flat tire experience. One call to her service advisor resulted in a quickly-arriving, pet-friendly car and driver for Dr. Ganzert and the three cats she happened to have in tow. Her vehicle was picked up, delivered to the dealership, and she was back on her way within an hour’s time.

The same sense of confidence and security is also found in her beloved Porsche Panamera; in which she never hesitates to transport any of her four-legged companions. Robin makes it a priority to patronize businesses that share her personal and professional values, and counts herself lucky to have found that in Braman Motorcars and Porsche West Palm Beach. The alignment between Braman and American Humane is demonstrated with the selflessness and forethought carried out with each of their clients. It is–to put it simply–in their nature.

2023 Drive to Provide Shelter & Security

SOUTH FLORIDA RESIDENTS ARE PROUDLY FAMILIAR with the declarations of envy from professional connections and family members who are new to our little corner of the globe. The endlessly gorgeous water views, litany of leisure activities, and lack of freezing temperatures leave little to argue over. It’s little wonder that Palm Beach County has only attracted more transplants and tourists over the past half-decade—with no sign of slowing.

The increased popularity has given rise to new businesses, customers, capital, and cultures that will shape the cityscape for decades to come.

However, it has also brought complications both expected and unforeseen. While downtown’s streets have welcomed thousands of new neighbors, they have also turned into de facto domiciles for unhoused people. Though the reasons behind this are varied and complex, the undeniable end result is a rise in homelessness in one of the wealthiest areas of the country. Fortunately, local action can have direct, positive effects; and this is the core mission of Gulfstream Goodwill Industries (GGI). Recognizing this, the Gulfstream Region of the Porsche Club of America chose to partner with GGI to host a celebration and fundraiser this past January for the Region’s 2nd anniversary, dubbing it the Drive to Provide Shelter & Home Security.

Considering many of the Region’s members count themselves as Porsche West Palm Beach clients, Braman Motorcars leadership stepped up as headline sponsor of the event, which took place on the front lawn of The Ben Hotel on a beautiful evening in downtown West Palm Beach.

In addition to offering marketing and support, Braman Motorcars and Porsche West Palm Beach provided a $25,000 check and a brand-new 2023 Porsche Macan as the grand-prize for the corresponding sweepstakes. Ticket sales to attend the event and win the Macan directly benefited the shelters and work programs GGI provides throughout the County.It all added up to a sold-out event of over 150 attendees, two dozen member Porsches on display, a wildly successful live auction featuring an 8-hour fishing charter and 3-day stay at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, and almost $250,000 raised in total!

During the latter half of the evening, guests were treated to video testimonials from their fellow community members who had participated in GGI’s programs. One gentleman in particular, Branden, shared his life-changing story of tragedy, hope, and triumph as he transitioned from homeless shelter to a work program; ultimately becoming a full-time member of GGI’s staff.

Braman Motorcars is immensely proud to have been an integral part of such an event, and wish to extend our congratulations to Robyn Dickerson—winner of the 2023 Porsche Macan—who took personal delivery of the SUV at the Porsche West Palm Beach Showroom.

TRADING A 401(K) FOR A 501(C)

ASK 100 PEOPLE HOW THEY ENVISION RETIREMENT, and a majority might describe a life surrounded by water—be it sailing around the world, making a semi-permanent home on a cruise ship, or simply having access to their own ready and waiting leisure vessel.

If Lee Rosenberg happened to be among that sample, his answer would be rather unique. Lee has spent his post-career years helping to study the expanses of the world’s oceans, and the creatures that call them home, through the establishment of the ANGARI Foundation—a 501(c)(3) which promotes marine and environmental science research and education.

Lee and his wife first became avid boaters in the early 1980s. Their two daughters Angela and Kari were common passengers, riding along in car seats secured to the family ship. As both grew up, their love of the water only matured. Angela holds a masters degree in marine geology and geophysics and currently serves as the foundation’s President. Kari is VP Original Content, Action Adventure at eOne in Los Angeles. She also leads the production of award-winning films for the Foundation on coral reef and shark research using cutting edge 360-degree camera techniques.

While his daughters’ involvement and subsequent successes stand as Lee’s proudest accomplishment, he is equally passionate

about the scientific work the 65’ yacht-turnedresearch-vessel R/V ANGARI has afforded to researchers from FIU, FAU, UM and other groups. The vessel has also supported both Shark Week and Sharkfest programs on the Discovery and Nat Geo channels. Lee particularly enjoys how ANGARI’s Coastal Ocean Explorers program brings local area middle and high school students aboard to benefit from a hands-on learning opportunity that had previously never been possible.

Naturally, Lee’s travels away from the water are also defined by comfort and luxury. His current “land yacht” is a brilliant graphite-overpiano-black Bentley Flying Spur—this one an exact replica of the original he purchased from Braman Bentley Palm Beach a little over four years ago. Originally considering a Rolls-Royce, Lee almost left the dealership empty-handed as his wife wasn’t enamored by the vehicle he had his eye on. Then, the gleaming paint of the Bentley caught her eye. They ended up loving the car so much, Lee insisted his newer version mimic the original in every way.

Of course, thanks to the unrelenting evolution of luxury and technology, this 626 horsepower, 200+ mph-capable model provides a superior ownership experience in every way. The best part for Lee however, is simply valeting the car. Upon pickup, he requests the most beautiful vehicle in the lot—and is always reunited with his beloved Bentley.

Lee is certainly one in one hundred—and probably far more—not because of how he’s spent his retirement, but in what he’s achieved for his family and our world. Coming soon is the in-person return of the ANGARI Foundation’s immensely popular supporter appreciation event. The celebration is provided for those individuals and companies that have helped further the organization’s goals over the years—to which Braman Motorcars has proudly contributed.

CULTURE COMES FROM WITHIN

IT’S NOT UNCOMMON TO ENCOUNTER

CLUB BRAMAN members who have remained loyal to Braman Motorcars for years—or even decades. These clients are the lifeblood of our dealership, and guaranteeing an unmatched experience every time they visit provides every staff member with a sense of purpose behind their job.

What many of these same clients may not realize is how the Braman Motorcars culture is experienced from the other side of the sales or service desk. The commitment to customer service first and foremost requires visionary leadership; the kind that can only come from a similar long-term commitment to our brand. A perfect example of this leadership is Director of Service, Megan Wall.

Megan has counted herself among the Braman Motorcars staff for more than 17 years, dating back to her first days as a service advisor. Her dedication to service and natural work ethic—often pushing her to personally handle her customers’ needs—earned her the opportunity to open the Braman BMW Jupiter service center, before moving onto Porsche West Palm Beach; and ultimately her current position, in which she oversees the 200-member staff– including 85 technicians, 112 service bays, 6 Service Managers, and 35 Service Advisors–under the Braman Motorcars service department banner.

Ironically, while her desire to personally assist with customer requests paved the path of her success, it is the one aspect that must be relinquished in favor of providing a guiding hand across each department. Through this delegation however, Megan is able to implement her vision from the top down. By personally coaching her managers in her methods, she can still leave her personal imprint on the customer experience–even across the 4,000 or more repair orders completed each month.

The delivery of a top-notch experience is baked into the daily and monthly goals she sets for her departments. That means going beyond receiving a vehicle and notifying its owner once it is ready to be picked up. Modern luxury and sports cars are technological marvels, requiring extended diagnostics, repairs, and explanations. Consistent communication with the client is key to establishing trust that the work will be completed efficiently, and to the highest manufacturer standards. With each member of her team focused on a common goal, Megan admits she is able to accomplish far more for her clients than could be done individually.

This vision and execution results in hundreds of thousands of loyal Club Braman members year after year, and it all generates from Braman Motorcars lifers, like Megan.

POR-SHE PARKING ONLY: WOMEN’S ONLY FORUM

SPORTS CARS DON’T DISCRIMINATE. It matters little who guides their Alcantara-trimmed steering wheels; or whether the feet performing a perfect heel-toe downshift are wearing sneakers or heels—though the latter is arguably more impressive. The thrills that these cars provide are open to all who dare to explore them.

It was a bit overdue then that this past November marked the first women’s-only forum hosted by Porsche West Palm Beach.

On a beautiful Sunday afternoon late in the month, a dozen of Porsche West Palm Beach’s female clientele were invited to Virginia Philip Wine Spirits and Academy to share their thoughts on the world’s preeminent sports car brand. Amid a sampling of wonderful wines professionally curated by Master Sommelier Virginia Philip herself, the attendees shared how their Porsches fit into their lifestyles, their personal driving experiences, and opinions on how these cars could entice new owners of the fairer sex.

The meeting was moderated by Braman Motorcars’ Service Director Megan Wall, and Porsche Global Ambassador Emily Friedman. Both remained front

and center throughout the discussion, moving the conversation forward with questions about what each client’s car meant to them, what they expected and wanted from Porsche moving forward, and the industry-wide pivot to EVs.

Over passed hors d’oeuvres courtesy of Sandy James Fine Foods, the women explained how the power, speed, and sporting intentions of their Porsches provided an unmatched package. Many sang the same praises as their male counterparts might have; including a yearning for the old-school feel of a shift lever and clutch pedal. The insights each offered further reinforced not only what makes Porsche so special, but why certain vehicles encompass universal appeal for those who enjoy the drive as much—or more—than the destination.

All participants left with a canvas Club Braman tote bag paired with a set of Porsche enscribed glasses and a bottle of their choice from the wine selections, as well as a deeper understanding of why Porsche continues to remain at the top of so many new car wishlists—no matter which pair of shoes their owners prefer for a night out.

VEHICLES MOST OFTEN COMPARED TO AIRPLANES boast cockpits resembling that of a fighter jet. A low seating position, wide windshield, and an engine providing thrust right behind the driver’s head are the hallmarks. One could be forgiven for assuming a full g-suit would be required before climbing in and jetting off mere inches from the ground.

To date, no Bentley has ever met such a description. The 2023 Bentayga Extended Wheelbase (EWB) does nothing to change this notion; instead, it introduces a novel aeronautical analogy for its passengers—that of a private luxury jet. While the lengthened Bentayga packs a punch for its pilot in the form of a twin-turbocharged 542 horsepower V-8, which can rocket the behemoth to 60mph in around four seconds, the true focus is on those along for the ride.

The changes between the EWB and a standard model are apparent both inside and out. Larger rear entry doors have been added, as well as extra space between the fore and aft wheels. The elegant vertical grille has been cribbed from the new Flying spur. The extra seven inches of interior legroom feel double that—particularly when paired with the optional Airline Seat package, which mimics the ultra-luxurious thrones of a Gulfstream jet. The two rear seats recline up to 40 degrees, provide an automatic footrest, and possess massaging and orthopedic functions designed to both relax and correct the posture of passengers.

Finally, the integrated climate control feature constantly analyzes body temperature and humidity, adjusting heating and ventilation to ensure those being transported arrive to their destinations comfortable and refreshed.

A vehicle of such stature is typically cumbersome in tight city streets, however the EWB benefits from a rear steering system—the first of which fit to any Bentayga—which cuts its turning radius by two feet over its standard-length brethren. While the EWB does retain the dynamic modes available on its stablemates, a purposefully hushed exhaust note helps ensure napping passengers are undisturbed at speed.

The EWB also benefits from Bentley’s full suite of bespoke exterior and interior design options—totaling more than 24 billion different combinations. Dedicate the time necessary, and each new owner can potentially enjoy their own 1-of-1 model.

The newest version of the Bentayga is a bit of a stretch—but those looking for the pinnacle in road-bound comfort and capability won’t have to; the 2023 Bentayga EWB starts at $229,175.

EARNING THE DISTINCTION OF “CONNOISSEUR” can come from total dedication, following the lead of a fellow expert, or simply being surrounded by one’s craft since birth. In all instances, time is required—like the aging of fine wine. True vinos can identify and explain the nuances of certain ingredients and flavors that go undetected by casual imbibers. With vehicles, a connoisseur will choose theirs based not on the flashiest style or numbers on a spec sheet; but on the experience its ownership provides.

Neil and Tara Empson, proprietors of Italian wine importer Empson USA, undoubtedly fit the bill when it comes to both their drink of choice and personal modes of transportation.

Though Neil has been visiting Palm Beach since falling in love with the island in the mid 1970s, his daughter Tara grew up in Milan before moving the company’s US headquarters to Virginia in 2019. Shortly after, the onset of COVID-19 turned the world on its head—but granted Tara the opportunity to move to South Florida as well. Almost immediately upon her arrival, she followed her fathers’ footsteps to Braman Motorcars.

Neil had been purchasing cars through the dealership group for years; though not just any old model off the showroom floors. A titan in his industry, Neil immediately recognized a peer in Mr. Stephen Grossman and insisted on assuming second ownership of every vehicle that passed through his personal garage. The latest is Neil’s personal favorite—and perhaps most appropriate: a BMW iX M60 in a gorgeous red wine hue with subdued gold trim and emblems. For a dyed-in-the-wool internal combustion fan who has owned plenty of exotic machinery and even dabbled in a bit of amateur racing, Neil admits he is a fan of the all-electric SUV, and will likely stick with EVs going forward—though that depends a bit on Mr. Grossman, of course.

Tara’s silver 911 may appear a bit more pedestrian to the casual observer. This is by design; fellow enthusiasts will instantly recognize the 992 Turbo as the luxurious, immensely capable performer it is. Porsche’s unmatched combination of simplicity and driving experience has led to her being a loyal customer of the brand for years. She likens her current 911 to a favorite bottle of wine only broken out for special occasions— one which always delivers on even the highest of expectations and experience.

THE UPCOMING 2024 ROLLS-ROYCE SPECTRE’S DEBUT will signal the brand’s arrival to the awaiting throne of Luxury EVs. LOIS POPE HAS ENJOYED SEVERAL SUCCESSFUL CAREERS, a loving marriage, and can be greeted each morning by the calming waves of the Atlantic Ocean just outside her front door. Indeed, she has done well in life. However, it could be said that she’s done even more good—an important distinction her parents instilled in her as a child.

Though of modest means growing up, Lois’ mother always saved enough to donate to those less fortunate when the opportunity arose. It was this example Lois would follow into the future, donating millions of her own fortune to a variety of worthy causes.

Growing tired of the cold, gray winters of the Northeast, Lois and her late husband Gene moved the headquarters of their media company, The National Enquirer, to South Florida several decades ago. The pair instantly fell in love with the area, regularly hosting massive Christmas celebrations featuring the then-World’s Tallest Christmas Tree. Though a life of luxury along Florida’s Gold Coast was certainly a dream fulfilled, Lois was drawn to a higher calling.

In 1993, she established the Leaders In Furthering Education (LIFE) and Lois Pope LIFE Foundations, which have since enriched the lives of hundreds of thousands disadvantaged by socio-economic status, neglect, age, abuse, and disabilities across the world. The organizations have hosted summer camps for lowincome children, provided medical school scholarships for students in underserved areas, constructed a clean water system for a Guatemalan village, and pursued numerous humanitarian projects. Most recently, Lois’ Food4Kids program has helped to offer nutritious meals outside of regular school hours on weekends, holidays, and extended breaks. Lois’ Care for Refugees, a special Save the Children program, provides food, water, and health supplies for Ukrainian refugee children, and she has endowed both the Lois Pope LIFE Center, home to the world-renowned Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, and the Lois Pope Center for Retinal and Macular Degeneration Research at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute.

Lois even partnered with none other than fellow Club Braman member Dr. Robin Ganzert and American Humane for the Pups4Patriots initiative to rescue and train service dogs before pairing them with veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury, effectively saving lives on both ends of the leash.

Efforts like the latter, which are focused on honoring those physically and psychologically scarred from combat, and diminishing the number of veteran lives lost to suicide, are the ones in which Lois is most proud. Following her mother’s lead once again, Lois personally donated $10 million toward the apogee of her achievements—the American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial, dedicated on October 5, 2014 in Washington, D.C. The star-shaped fountain and flame, flanked by granite and glass, stands as a reminder to the public and elected officials alike that in war there are no unwounded soldiers.

ONE THING CLUB BRAMAN MEMBERS KNOW TO COUNT ON is that they’re guaranteed larger, more entertaining events year after year at the finest venues throughout South Florida. This expectation was once again exceeded during the everpopular Casino Night this past January. This particular edition offered attendees a first look inside the recently remodeled and internationally-acclaimed PGA National Resort.

Members were welcomed into the British Ballroom and offered two complimentary drink tickets, as well as access to a cash bar for stronger cocktails. Those with a sweet tooth need not gamble on being satisfied, as gooey caramel-drizzled chocolate chunk brownies and blondies were at the ready, as well as fresh-out-the-oven cookies.

20 gaming tables awaited for blackjack, poker, craps, and roulette players. Those looking to exercise their pulling arms could choose from ten slot machines, and anyone interested in simply enjoying the atmosphere were serenaded by live music from the Bobby G Duo—featuring the pair of singers/guitarists Bobby G and Paulie Granato.

Nearly two dozen couples took advantage of the dinner discounts available at in-house restaurants Honeybelle and The Butcher’s Club, while all in attendance tried to make their $500 of faux money last until their luck ran out. However, winners were welcome to cash in on raffle tickets prior to the end of the evening.

The night’s final game of chance began as Club Braman host Ron Brooks spun the raffle barrel round and round. The most fortuitous left with gift cards to Honeybelle, The Butcher’s Club, and the PGA National Resort Spa; while one lucky winner was granted the coveted Braman Night on the Town Package—featuring a professional chauffeur and $200 toward a meal and drinks at the client’s destination of choice.

THE COMPETITIVE WORLD OF PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES IS CUTTHROAT. A never-ending quest for even the smallest advantage requires attention to detail and constant innovation. Recently, this has manifested in the integration of advanced technology in athletic training, meant to unearth the fractional improvement which could mean the difference between defeat and eternal glory.

This pursuit of cutting-edge techniques has long been expected of basketball, football, or baseball players; but for golfers it has only recently become par for the course—pun intended. However, according to coach Joey Diovisali, aka Joey D., it is no less essential. The success of his philosophy can be surmised from his client list: Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Rickie Fowler; and even fellow Club Braman member Brad Faxon have all subscribed to Joey D’s methods.

Though he now works with professional and amateur clients from across the world out of his facility in Jupiter, Joey’s approach wasn’t always as appreciated as it is today. Even he acknowledges that as little as two decades ago, “golf fitness” was seen as an oxymoron. Weight lifting wasn’t considered beneficial— much less strength training specific to improving swing mechanics. However, in the early 2000s the PGA Tour nonetheless assembled a group of experts to put together a program encompassing both—of which Joey was a part.

Thus Joey helped to not only pioneer the concept, but further refine and perfect it over the past two decades. This has culminated in the introduction of his OxeFit training equipment—the most technologically-advanced training system in the world—complete with customized regimens created by Joey based on each client’s goals.

2023 Porsche 718 Spyder

THOUGH LACKING THE ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY OF THE 911,

the 718—née Boxster—traces its roots back to Dr Ferdinand Porsche’s first designs. The concept is a classic; two seats, a disappearing roof, and a balanced performance. Though the 718 is larger, faster, and leagues more capable than its predecessors, the formula remains the same.

However, the Spyder is no ordinary 718. Paying homage to a style and name of a bygone era, the 718 Spyder turns up the dial in every aspect of the ownership experience. More curves. More power. More passion. More open air, even, as the soft top eschews electricity for manually-operated clips.

The underpinnings of the Spyder are similar to those of the Cayman GT4—perhaps the only model in Porsche’s lineup that could run with higher-end 911s on a racetrack. Even as host comedian Perry Sak took the stage to kick off the festivities, more and more members filed in, eventually bringing the venue to capacity with over 200 eager attendees.

Perry came out hot, loudly declaring his love for the New England Patriots, much to the chagrin and light heckling of the Miami Dolphin fans in attendance. He then introduced featured comedian Lenny Travis. Hailing from New York, Lenny shared his sardonic takes on aging, marrying after 50, and navigating South Florida’s labyrinth of roadways and manners.

The buzz was palpable toward the end of the brief intermission leading to the night’s headliner. Immediately upon taking the stage, Jimmy Shubert—a former finalist on Last Comic Standing—launched into his trademark aggressive and hilarious observations of the current state of the world; taking aim in particular at everyday household chores, grocery shopping, and the plights of modern airline travel. The riotous crowd roared and offered ovations during the brief pauses throughout Jimmy’s hour-long set.

In terms of both attendance and entertainment, the night undoubtedly set a high bar not only for new Club Braman members, but those who have long enjoyed its benefits.

OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DECADES, PORSCHE HAS MADE A HABIT of proving its doubters wrong. PALM BEACH WATERFRONT, Avocado Grill’s tropical decor, vibrant style, and seamless indoor-outdoor flow more resembles an exotic locale than a renowned dining destination. However, this is no ordinary restaurant; its extensive menu of Caribbean and Florida-inspired cuisine is the masterpiece of French-trained, award winning, lifelong chef, Julien Gremaud. Should one be fortunate enough to spot a menacing slate gray BMW X5M Competition out front, there’s even a chance the proprietor himself will be found mixing it up in the open kitchen area just steps from the expansive bar.

Julien spent his early career in London, Chicago, and as a private chef for several celebrities in the Palm Beach area. However, Avocado Grill’s opening in 2014, followed by Avocado Cantina in Palm Beach Gardens, marked Julien’s foray into his own operation. As a nod to South Florida’s transient population, Julien’s goal was to bring Floridian food to Floridians. This means plates heavily influenced by a multitude of cultures; eschewing butter, cream and flour and substituting options such as coconut milk where necessary. The offerings are largely seafood based, locally-sourced, and include vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. Two perfect examples are the restaurant’s hallmark dishes: grilled octopus, served with fingerling potatoes, chorizo, and paprika aioli, and a zucchini flower with goat cheese, tomato jam, and shallots, both of which have been on the menu since nearly day one.

These and other mouth-watering offerings earned Julien consecutive Judge’s Favorite awards in the Palm Beach Food and Wine Festival Chef Throwdown, among other accolades over the years. Though always true to his original concept, he also enjoys allowing his trusted chefs to cook up ideas of their own. The resulting culinary experimentation means various appetizer and dinner specials offered nightly.

Julien’s most essential ingredient however, is his commitment to philanthropy. He is dedicated to work that feeds those in need through organizations like No Kid Hungry, while also remaining at the ready when disaster strikes. In the wake of 2019’s Hurricane Dorian for example, Julien stepped up to support families in the Bahamas who had lost everything to the storm. Following Hurricane Ian’s devastation of Florida’s west coast, Julien was one of the first to cook and serve hundreds of meals onsite, as well as collect and organize the delivery of supplies to those who had lost so much.

For a man large in both figurative and physical stature, nothing less than the automotive equivalent of a full course meal would suffice. After owning both a Porsche Panamera Turbo S and Cayenne GTS from Porsche West Palm Beach, Julien has found his X5M Competition to be yet another fullcourse meal of a vehicle.

At a height of 6’4”, the headroom and space provided by the BMW have permanently swayed Julien away from smaller vehicles. While working in the kitchen requires precision and discipline, on the road Julien can indulge in the turbocharged V-8s power and aggression. For him, the potential danger is exhilarating.

Fans of Avocado Grill and Avocado Cantina will be heartened to learn that one of the next stops on Julien’s journey is an upcoming third restaurant set to be formally announced later this year. Thus was the theme of February’s Club Braman Champagne Brunch, hosted by Braman Bentley Palm Beach. Amid plates of crab Eggs Benedict and a delectable sushi station, selected invitees browsed creative pieces from two of Palm Beach’s finest jewelry designers: Cameron Patrick Neth Fine Jewelry, and Pietrafesa Palm Beach. The latter’s own Drew Pietrafesa showcased an internally flawless, 6.11 carat diamond valued at over $550,000.

Two luxury handbag purveyors were also on hand, displaying distinctly unique wares available for sale right from the showroom floor.

Local designer, Cecy’s Handbags, showed dozens of bags and clutches originating both domestically and from Italy. Her vaunted Beethoven’s 5th Clutch was also onsite, created to raise funds for the Palm Beach Symphony. Only Authentics was also represented—a specialty shop which collects and resells the most rare and beautiful handbags ever produced. Among the dozens of 100% authentic designer bags from brands like Hermes, was a 1-of-1 Braise Red Crocodile Birkin sporting diamond hardware, valued at over $600,000.

Though rare to find an accessory more valuable than the vehicle, such is the experience for Club Braman members.

CLUB BRAMAN EATS: JOHAN’S JOE

AMID THE HUSTLE AND BUSTLE OF DOWNTOWN WEST PALM BEACH it can be hard to find an opportunity to slow down and smell the roses…or lattes. Johan’s Joe, nestled on the corner of South Dixie Highway and Fern Street, provides exactly that. Laura and Matti Klintberg became Johan’s Joe’s proprietors in 2016. The two actually met while working there, before marrying and taking over their beloved cafe. Despite

his years of business experience both in America and in Sweden, running a restaurant was a daunting new task for Matti. Fortunately, coffee is revered in Swedish culture, and his connections helped source the highest quality, fairtrade organic blends available only through the country’s oldest roaster, Lofbergs Lila. The trademark smooth, never bitter taste of their classic lattes and drip coffee is a perennial favorite of customers—even among the litany of flavors, styles, and monthly specials on the menu.

Of course, pairing a cup of choice with any of the various Swedish imported snacks and candies, or unique takes on breakfast

sandwiches—like The Stockholm and The Viking, which features a double helping of, well, everything—is always welcomed. As such, word has spread quickly, even drawing regulars from Palm Beach Island.

In a previous life, Matti owned a dealership back in Europe—which provides him with a unique perspective when it comes to vehicle purchases. THE TEACHINGS OF SUPERBLUE

EVERY HERO NEEDS THEIR MENTOR. Batman has his butler, Alfred. The X-Men have Professor X. No matter how amazing their abilities, even the bravest and strongest need someone to guide and advise them from time to time. For West Palm Beach’s own SuperBlue—a masked, thunderbolt-wielding superhero who draws his power from lightning to protect the city from bad guys and catastrophic hurricanes—that mentor is Valerie Komar.

Out of respect for secret identities, it can only be alleged, though not confirmed, that Valerie is SuperBlue’s mother.

Upon graduating from The Juilliard School, Valerie moved to Paris where she pursued her career as a professional opera singer.

It was here she welcomed her son Adrien into the world. While she loved the Parisian culture and lifestyle, it soon became apparent that the French school system was not ideal for children with autism and other exceptionalities. Summoning her own inner hero, Valerie established KidJam, a musical association focused on music and language education through a neurodiverse environment. At its height, KidJam grew to welcome over 1,000 students each year.

Still, Valerie felt that the best place for Adrien was back in her native United States. Though not without its own challenges, the US education system and resources were far greater than those in Paris, and ABM Neuromovement® practitioners were more easily accessible stateside. With some prodding from her son’s practitioner, Valerie began studying to become an ABM® NeuroMovement® practitioner herself. Though originally meant as a year-long course, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic lengthened her “Class of 2020” studies into a rich three-year long online education. After earning her adult certification in 2022 and thus becoming the first practitioner in South Florida, Valerie began working with infants and children—especially those who had experienced various brain traumas such as cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, and strokes, as well as those on the autism spectrum.

In her practice, Valerie implements an holistic approach which helps to upgrade the brain’s functioning in all its facets. NeuroMovement focuses on creating new connections to overcome pain and limitation, so as to reach new levels of physical and cognitive performance. By meeting the child where they are at in their current abilities rather than “fixing” their limitations, their brains can become the incredible learning machines they were built to be. Valerie insists that acceptance of special needs should not be confused with lowered expectations, as all of us require challenge in order to grow and thrive.

It was through this process that SuperBlue came to be.
