President’s Corner I feel good! Let me say that again: I feel good! A lot of things have occurred over the last month that when reviewed, make me feel very optimistic about the coming spring and summer. For example, my family and I have gotten fully vaccinated, and it’s a positive feeling to have this protection. I sincerely hope that those who desire the vaccine can get it in the next couple of months as we continue to take precautions to protect ourselves. The general feeling is that things are getting better. Our Region is opening up and the Social and the Events committees are planning several events for the membership to enjoy. I just caution those who are interested in an event not to hesitate in registering promptly in order to insure your participation.

The Gulfstream Region had their first rally and it was a great success. Gulfstream is now up and running and will be holding other events in the near future. In addition, Gold Coast and Gulfstream will be working together to create some joint events that will be mutually enjoyable. APRIL 16TH to APRIL 18TH, MOUNT DORA. A contingent from our region will be making the run to Mt. Dora, Florida for a weekend of scenic tours, great dining and fellowship. That event will be followed on April 24th by our traditional Stone Crab Drive. This event really sells out fast so be forewarned and register promptly. Porsches and Pancakes is rolling right along with more members participating each month. If you have not attended one

Peter Olliviere, President

of these, be sure to flag the first Saturday of the month on your calendar and attend the hosting restaurant closest to you. In addition, the Thursday Night Socials are held on the third Thursday of each month at a location near you. Also noteworthy is the coming of a goody store, where you will be able to purchase PCA and GCR gear directly. Other things the Board is working on include a new members’ event and additional tours. Autocross is back with a bang and DE will follow soon. Bottom line, it’s going to be a busy Porsche summer!

Editor’s Notes Not only is the weather reminding us why we live in the great state of Florida, but it also seems like we all have a spring in our step as we get back to the PCA events that we are used to. The 48 Hours at Sebring club race was a huge success even though many of our activities were restricted. Many of the chairs and vendors are already planning ahead for 2022, when we hope our format will be back to normal. Another good example of this spring effect was the recent DRT event in Miami. The location was changed from downtown South Miami to Schnebly Winery in the Redlands as our PCA members came out to support the event. The large turnout was another indicator that we all want to get out of the house and enjoy our Porsches and extended Porsche family. One of my favorite automotive artists, David Chapple, displayed his artwork for the first time at the DRT event. His artwork was well

Roger Fabel, Editor

received and David is planning on a return engagement next year. A track experience was added to the event this year and many Gold Coast members who have enjoyed our DE program were able to exercise their cars on the Homestead Motor Speedway. Many of our board members who enjoyed the track experience took time during the weekend also to educate new members about our programs. Along with providing T-shirts from the 48 hours at Sebring race, members learned about volunteer positions that are available to support the race. The Porsche Juniors program was also a popular topic that helps to get the younger members involved in the club, another reason the club continues to grow. Many of you have missed our tech articles that were a monthly highlight for so many years. After Pedro Bonilla transferred to Suncoast region, we were unable to replace his talent. Pedro is back by

popular demand as our Technical Writer and will once again be providing monthly articles in the Kassette Tech Corner. Welcome back Pedro! We have missed your great tech articles. The Sebring 12 Hours race was attended by many Gold Coast members last month. How many of you know the history of Sebring? Check out the great article on page 14 by Mike Tarter. We are very lucky to have two historical race tracks in our backyard. Our Thursday night socials have become very popular and we have a new flyer that shows the meeting details for Gold Coast and Gulfstream regions. Every Porsche has a story, often with several chapters from different owners. But the cars can’t speak for themselves, so share your stories! If you have an idea for a new article, please email me. This also includes tech articles.

DRT 2021 In 2015, I learned about a Porsche event called “DRT”—not affiliated with PCA or GCR—that would take place in downtown South Miami at Sunset Drive by Red Road (57th Ave) where the Bakery Center is located. I currently live in northwest Broward County and since this event was taking place in the part of Miami where I grew up, I was intrigued and signed up to enter “Shadow,” my early 1985 944 into the People’s Choice competition.

by Christy Spangler, Director

When I arrived, I learned that help was needed with checking in the participants. So I volunteered with another GCR member to assist checking in all of these amazing Porsches. I spent the rest of the day spectating and visiting with Porsche owners. Since then, I have attended every DRT Main Event and it seems to get bigger and better every year. Additional events have been added including a track day, cocktail party, and cars and coffee, expanding DRT to multiple days.

I attended the track experience and meet for the first time this year at the Homestead Motor Speedway. Several packages were being offered including the Porsche Corral, Lead & Follow Drives and Novice, Intermediate & Advanced Hot Laps. I signed up for the Porsche Corral pass that included a t-shirt, lunch, and a parade lap around the track. The parade lap was a lot of fun; all the cars that were participating were lined up on the track for a group photo before the parade lap started.

Track experience participants staged for the group photo on the Homestead Motor Speedway. It was a laid-back day and I enjoyed walking around, checking out the Porsches, visiting with the other participants and spectating the hot lap sessions. Due to the circumstances surrounding the pandemic this year, for the first time, the DRT Main Event was held at the scenic Schnebly Winery and Miami Brewing Company complex in the Redlands. We were instructed to park in the side lot at first, then once the gates opened, we were ushered through for the red carpet treatment that included a photo op, then directed to our respective parking areas. Once again, I had brought Shadow for display and was parked next to a late 1985 944.

Track experience - ready for the parade lap.

I enjoyed checking out the two cars to see the differences between the early and late models. Come to think of it, I don’t think I saw any two Porsches that were alike! They all seemed to have their own personalities. During the day, participants mingled, sampled the wine, beer and food and enjoyed visiting and viewing the Porsches. Not only are many beautiful cars driven in by attendees, but DRT also curates several cars for display. This year there was a Spyder and a 917 included with some of the other classics. There were a couple of artists that displayed their Porsche-related art and there were several vendors there to talk about their goods and services.

Christy’s early 1985 944 (left) and a late 1985 944 (right).

I volunteered at the GCR table on both days where many members stopped by to say hello and we gave out information to potential new members. It was nice meeting members and catching up with ones that I already know. This past year brought many challenges to in-person events and just when I thought DRT was not going to happen, I got the notification that registration for it was opening on February 2nd. The event itself was to start on February 19th—only 18 days away! I was surprised by this and am impressed that the organizers were able to put this together in such a short amount of time. I look forward to DRT 2022!

HISTORY OF SEBRING RACE TRACK AND HENDRICKS FIELD STORY BY MIKE TARTER, PHOTOS BY COLOUR TECH SOUTH

In 1999, the Sebring pits, tower and viewing suites that we utilize were under construction. So, the Sebring Club Race that year was held in the Green Park area within turns 4 through 12. While walking around between sessions, I noticed a drainage manhole cover. Cast into the rusty steel was some identification writing: “Mclean Iron Works Palatka Florida 1941”. What?! Wow, that’s old. I marveled over this old steel, and then realized I was looking at a part of the origi-

14

nal airfield built during World War II. I’ve been driving at Sebring track events since 1983, and I sort of knew the racetrack had originally been configured on an airfield, but I hadn’t really thought about the history of the track. I later looked at aerial photos and recognized that some that we enjoy today is remains of that airfield. I was intrigued; I got reading. It goes back to 1940. War had been raging in China and in Europe for several years. It was likely the U.S. would be at least an indirect participant. We were already supplying equipment to our allies via the LendLease program. Sebring city leaders foresaw the US would need training bases. They proactively bought 9,200 acres of sandy, palmetto-covered, marshy, Florida prairie land about seven miles southeast of the city of Sebring. This larger than immediately necessary area was then offered to the U.S. War Depart-

Kassette | Apr 2021

ment, with a 99 year lease at $1.00 per year. After inspections and considerations for power, water, weather, rail service and road access, on June 13, 1941 the War Department announced that this site was to become a Basic Flying School. By the end of 1941 there were 2-3000 workers building around the clock. They built a complete town, from the ground up. It started with drainage, access roads, rail spurs, electric power, water and sewage systems, telephone and telegraph lines, more roads, then 150 foot wide runways, and buildings. Everything – barracks, repair and training shops, mess halls, offices, warehouses, a fire station, huge aircraft hangers, a control tower, hospital, a chapel, PXs, Post Of-

fice, recreation halls, motor pool, a water tower, fuel and ammunition depots, and a swimming pool or two. Plus paved roads, widening the runways to 300 feet and adding taxiways and aircraft dispersal points around the perimeter of the runways. In July 1941, before the U.S. was officially at war, we sold 20 B-17C bombers to Great Britain. A contingent of US Army

B-17 pilots volunteered to help train the Royal Air Force pilots. Among them was a West Point graduate, 1st Lieutenant Laird Woodruff Hendricks, who had grown up here in Florida. He arrived in Great Britain on July 25. Three days later, Laird and a crew of six British airmen were to conduct a high altitude test. The flight took off from RAF Polebrook and crashed less than 30 minutes later. Laird was buried in Arlington National Cemetery. On January 14, 1942, the airfield was named Hendricks Field in memory of Laird Hendricks. By March the base was training complete combat crews; pilot, co-pilot, navigator, bomb a r d i e r, r a d i o operator, aerial engineer, and 4 air gunners. Hendricks Field was one of numerous training airfields in Florida. Near Fort Myers Buckingham F i e l d was dedicated to training aircraft gunnery crews. The Boca

Raton airbase trained radar bombing, mostly B-24 bombers. The airfield near Orlando was a fighter training base (now it’s Orlando Executive). Another field was at Immokalee. As an aside, over the years, I have autocrossed at each one of these. The Avon Park Bombing range, about 30 miles away, was constructed in 1942 and is still in use. By mid-1942, this was now a small city but a major airfield, with four 5,000 foot long by 300 feet wide concrete runways and huge parking ramps. A note here - I’ve heard that because steel was in critical demand during the war, much of the airfield concrete was poured without reinforcing bars. It’s amazing that it has held up this well so long. Late in 1942, the base mission was changed again. It became a specialized training school for four-engine pilots. Thousand of single and twin-engine pilots were transferred here to transition to four engine aircraft, including B-17, B-24 and B-29s. During the war, Hendricks Field trained over 10,000 aircrew. At peak, there were over 120 B-17 bombers based here and more than 1.2 million takeoffs and landings. Hendricks had one of the best safety records, but there were casualties. There were eight B-17 crashes, with 45 men killed. Most of the B-17 aircrews went to Europe. The loss rate for the 8th Air Force in Europe was about 20-30%; thus it’s probable that thousands of these men (women did not serve in combat aircrew in WWII) perished. As noted, this was a major training airfield, for ground crew as well; navigation, meteorology, radio and aerial engineering. Take a look at the aerial photo of the base. In the photo to the right, compare the ratio of the 5000 foot long runways to the width. It was a small complete city. There were over a hundred marriages performed, numerous babies born in the base hospital. The base had a newspaper and published a yearbook documenting achievements. After Germany surrendered in May

Apr 2021 | Die Porsche

Kassette

15

1945, and Japan in August, the airfield was already winding down. The thousands of service men and women stationed at the base were understandably eager to return to their homes and lives. The base was officially closed as an Army Air Field on December 31, 1945, and turned over to the City of Sebring on May 1, 1946. By the way, remember that nationwide housing shortage? There was some scuffling over those unused fairly new buildings all over the airfield. I found a few references to buildings ‘vanishing’ after the war. By 1950, the airfield was largely abandoned and getting derelict. An aeronautical engineer, Alec Ulmann saw the long run-

16

Die Porsche

ways and paved roads as an opportunity for a road race. He organized the Sam Collier 6-Hour Memorial Race, held on December 31, 1950. This is reported as the first sports car endurance race in the U.S. It utilized two of the runways, much of the parking ramps and some of the base paved roads. In 1952, he organized the first 12-Hours of Sebring race, on March 15, 1952. See the course diagram above, compare it to the base photo (top) from 1944. There is a great photo of the start of the 1966 12 Hour race (next page). That nice wide staging area, with the pits to the left and track to the right – that was a small part of the bomber parking ramp. The track configuration changed several times over the years, in order to not have the race shut down air traffic (see the photo on the right). The present track, the 12-Hour course that we drive, uses some original concrete of Hendricks Field. The long back straight from turn 16 to 17 – that is part of what was a runway. When I first drove here in 1983, the

Kassette | Apr 2021

weeds growing up in the concrete expans i o n cracks had to be mowed d o w n because the track was so disused b a c k then, before DE’s. From Turn 17 along the front straight past Turn 1 was parking ramp for B-17s. As we head towards Turn 1, the concrete goes way to the left, to the infield, and to our right over to the pit structures. That is mostly all original 1941-42 concrete. This track that we blast around has seen some amazing events and history. Two of the original four runways and a hangar are still used, albeit improved. By the way, I can heartily recommend the restaurant in the new terminal building. There is a memorial to Laird Hendricks in that building. Now, each time I go to the Sebring track, I somberly recall some of that history. One other thing astonishes me still; that manhole cover has been there since 1941, continuously exposed to Florida weather. It has surface rust, yet the casting is still readable. What absolutely amazing cast iron or steel. I wish my 1968 911 (my first Porsche) had been made with such corrosion resistant good steel.

So – how did we come to race here? In May 1984, Gold Coast Region held it’s first DE event at the now extinct Moroso racetrack near North Palm Beach. By 1993, Gold Coast and Sun Coast PCA regions had active DE programs, and had been doing some of these at Sebring. I was at the proposal meeting for the first Club Race here. As with our first proposed DE, several people said, “are you kidding? Are you crazy? This will be a disaster.” The first year (1994) or two of the race there was, ahem, ‘austere’, but successful. It has grown ever since.

Photo of the Month

968 With A Happy Ending by Christy Spangler, photo of the month chair

This month’s photo was submitted by Ricardo Arnaldo of his wife, Virginia’s, 1993 968 cabriolet. The photo was taken in their Homestead forest. When Ricardo and Virginia attended a Concourse show, they saw this Amethyst 968 cabriolet with gray leather interior and absolutely fell in love with it. The car won a trophy that day but it was not for sale. A few years later they saw it advertised in Panorama. Ricardo and Virginia had three Porsches at the time but Virginia did not know much about the 968. After much discussion, Ricardo went out to purchase the 968 and gave it to Virginia for her birthday. According to Ricardo, only 22 968s had the Amethyst color. “So this was sort of a vehicle love story with a happy ending!” says Ricardo. This photo gives us a demure glimpse of the 968 although I am fairly certain Virginia’s Porsche is anything but modest and reserved. The Amethyst color really pops where the sun is hitting it between the shadows cast by the forest enticing us further with this peek-a-boo effect. Ricardo used a Pentax K3 DSLR, ISO 400, lens at 22mm open to F 7.1 and a Polarizer to capture the unusual color. I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming! From Merriam-Webster’s adjective syn•thet•ic | \ sin-the-tik : devised, arranged, or fabricated for special situations to imitate or replace usual realities noun : something resulting from synthesis rather than occurring naturally especially: a product (such as a fuel) of chemical synthesis We have used for many years a great deal of synthetic products in our Porsches, from the plastic and composite parts in most areas of the vehicle, to the adhesives that keep them together, to the Mobil1 synthetic motor oil that comes from the factory to lubricate and cool our engines. But we may be using a brand new synthetic product soon: Synthetic Fuel. Well, “brand new” may not be very precise. Audi, Bosch and McLaren, among others, have been talking about working on the technology for years. But further back—to be precise in the late 1930s—Nazi Germany had already developed and perfected the

Synthetic Fuel hydrogenation process to supply the Nazi War Machine its fuel needs by way of synthetic fuels made from its vast domestic supplies of coal. What may be surprising is that technology is still in use today, in particular in South Africa. After apartheid was instituted, many oil-producing nations refused to sell oil to the apartheid regime and a local company (Sasol) was created to produce synthetic gas and oils for their domestic use. The plant is still productive, and since its inception, Sasol has produced over 1.5 billion gallons of gasoline, which is basically no different from the gasoline produced from Texas crude oil. In the last year, Porsche has been talking up a storm regarding synthetic fuels. Even though as a company, Porsche is committed to going full electric across its platforms in a few short years, the managers also understand that older Porsches will be around for many years to come and their owners will want to keep enjoying them as they have in the past. Porsche wants therefore to significantly and independently drive forward the development of synthetic fuels, also known as eFuels. “This technology is particularly important because the combustion engine will continue to dominate the automotive world for many years to come,” says Michael Steiner, Member of Porsche’s Executive Board, Research and Development. “If you want to operate the existing fleet in a sustainable manner, eFuels are a fundamental component.” “We have a team that is looking for suitable partners who want to build pilot plants with us and prove that the entire process chain works and can be industrialized,” says Steiner. eFuels are produced from CO2 and hydrogen, using renewable energy. In terms of their basic properties they are no different from any other fuel produced from crude oil; however, they can ideally be a climate-neutral fuel. Porsche believes in eFuels so much that they are considering entering Formula 1, if the series commits to going greener – specifically with synthetic fuels. Porsche believes that by using eFuel to power an internal combustion engine (ICE) car, emissions can be reduced by 85% and can be as clean as a battery-electric vehicle when wheel-to-well lifecycles are taken into account. The eFuels Porsche is talking about are completely artificial and do not contain unwanted elements, as fossil fuels do, that get converted into pollutants in the combustion process. These fuels could power existing ICE cars without any modifications. A plant in southern Chile will implement a proprietary methanol-to-gasoline process under license by Exxon Mobil. Water will be split into hydrogen and oxygen by electrolysis and CO2 will be filtered out of the air and processed with the hydrogen to create synthetic methanol. Then the proprietary methanol-togasoline work comes into play.

Porsche says that the eFuel works on everything from the latest-generation GT3 to a classic 911 from many decades ago. In 2022, Porsche will begin trials of the eFuel with production of some 34,000 gallons. By 2026 Porsche says that if everything goes according to plan, we could see a production of 145 million gallons. I guess most of us will still be around to use eFuel in our beloved ICE Porsches. I can’t wait to fill my (300K plus miles)

1998 Boxster with eFuel. I can then drive it another 300,000 miles as guilt-free as if I was driving a Taycan. For more information about eFuels and more, please visit my website: Pedro@PedroGarage.com. Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro Ⓒ2021 Technolab / PedrosGarage.com

Autocross Update

Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair

We get these questions time and time again so this information is worth repeating. Our goal is to increase Porsche/ PCA member participation at our GCR autocross (AX) events. We have run a number of AX events since the Covid-19 outbreak and follow PCA guidelines to insure proper protocols are in place, including but not limited to Covid waivers, social distancing, masks required when not driving, extra sanitation measures, & reduction /elimination of touch points. An autocross is a competitive driving event, in which a car is timed over a course laid out on a paved area (often a large parking lot) and is marked by short, soft road pylons (cones). An autocross is skill challenging, but is always educational and social. No passing is allowed and the cars are to be spread out on the course so as to maintain a safe distance between them. A safety chair will evaluate the course prior to the start of the event. In addition, the course designer will designate worker/safety stations near the course to keep a close eye on each car as it progresses thru the course. Speeds are generally 35-65 MPH and mostly use 2nd gear. Safety is always a top priority. To address the specific questions about the PCA/GCR Autocross events, we’ve put together a simple Q and A. Should you need more information please feel free to contact Steve or Dottie Kidd at 954-946-3196 Q Is Autocrossing dangerous or will it hurt my car? A. While there are inherent dangers to any type of motor sport, Autocrossing is considered one of the safest. At GCR, we pride ourselves on our excellent safety record and keep safety as a top priority. The traffic cones used to mark the course are soft rubber and will not damage your car. Q. Do I need a helmet? A. Yes, however we do have some loaner helmets available for 1st timers. Those needing a helmet are strongly encouraged to bring a helmet sock or liner, Q .Do I need to get my car Tech inspected prior to the event, or do anything special? A . We inspect your car at the AutoX site. Our tech inspection is not as comprehensive as one for a drivers education, however the basics include, but are not limited to, cleaning everything out of your car, no bald tires, proper tire inflation and lug nut torquing, no fluid leaks and firm brake pedal and no excessive steering play. Basically the newer, low mileage cars that are properly maintained should not need any extra work. Generally, older cars may receive a more thorough review . Q. When do events usually start and finish? A. Our events start around 7:30am and typically run till about 4:00pm. We typically have 30-70 Participants at each event. At most events each competitor gets 5-15 runs, with 8 runs being the usual Q. What about noise and safety? A. All vehicles are safety inspected prior to the event and excessive noise is not permitted. With Covid precautions in place a self tech form is in place to eliminate touch points. Q. What about rest room facilities? Food / Water / alcohol ? A. A porta-let is typically delivered to the site, or some sites, like Sebring ,have real restrooms. Competitors are encouraged to bring their own beverage or food. Water may be available, however with COVID precautions, communal coolers will not be available. Alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited during the event by anyone on site Q. What about instruction for beginners? A. Glad you asked! Newcomers are encouraged to get involved and instruction is provided at each event by some of our National Champion instructors. Here’s some of the details about our AutoX instruction that is offered at each event to 1st timers which is designed to get more 1st timers out to the Autox site and watch, participate, and hopefully become regular competitors. In a nut shell, here’s how it works. Potential newbies are identified during the preregistration process. In most cases, e-mails or phone calls are exchanged to help take the edge off for newcomers. A special run group/class is available for new comers called our S/N class for Stock Novice. This means no significant past motor sport experience and a completely stock car. Before the driver meeting, all newcomers meet with the event chair for a special meeting / course walk to make sure all rules are understood. Prior to your 1st run, an instructor is assigned to ride along and assist. In most cases a student will get input from multiple instructors. Plan on a busy day...everyone that runs must also work the course. Work assignments typically involve manning 1 of 4-6 safety stations and re-setting cones that are knocked over & calling in penalties to timing and scoring.

Tentative AX schedule for the remainder of Q1 & 2 Event #3 in the works...A Return to BBT Possible dates are 4/24 or 4/25 Event #4 5/22/2021 @ Sebring: Very similar to event #1or a surprise location...tentative: Please see pictures and sample course map on the next page
