Trying to get past Covid is a tough job. Every month I look forward to writing about exciting things that are happening in the Region, and each month I must include information about Covid. The virus we thought was passing into history keeps insisting on changing and coming back at us in different guises, and weather we acknowledge it or not, it influences the planning and coordination of region events. But even with Covid lurking in the background we must press on with the calendar while exercising as much caution as possible.

the Bay but in a new location. To support or concours initiative in 2022 we will need judges. So, we will be reviving the Concours Collage training sessions. Several years ago, this program was created to train members in how to judge a PCA Concours event. We had great success with this training because it not only taught you how to correctly judge a concours, but it taught you how to be a better competitor. If have an interest in concours this training is for you. Further information about this training will be forthcoming.

With that said we have some exciting events coming up. We will be holding a major Concours event this spring. The event will be in the spirit of Porsches by

Christy Spangler, Social Chair This year got off to a great start with the Drive-and-Dine to the Islamorada Fish Company on January 8th, including nearly 80 amazing GCR Porsches from all corners of our region joining the drive. I would like to say thank you to Cynthia Fluhart-Diaz, who not only volunteers as our club’s Secretary, but who is also on our Social Committee and organized this popular event. I would also like to thank Steve Kidd, Rick Veingrad, Ed Kohly, and Mike Del Pozo for volunteering at the Kristoff’s Cafe and Snapper Creek Turnpike Plaza meet-up points to help with

By the way, even if you don’t play golf, we will still need volunteers to make this event a success. This President’s Corner was written in early January, and I must apologize for it being so short but since Christmas I have been dealing with a loss in my family that has occupied the majority of my time. The only solution is to keep working and not be pulled down by circumstance. With that said let’s look forward to a spectacular 2022.

the check-in and with the group drive to Islamorada. This is the fourth year Cynthia has organized this event and due to the overwhelming response, she included some suggestions of things to do after lunch including the Florida Keys Brewing Co. and Gilbert’s Resort Tiki Bar. The Tech Sessions are back this year with the first one being held at Dr. ColorChip in Lake Park, FL on February 19th. This session will include a tour of the facility, a paint touch-up seminar and time to socialize. Sign up on club registration.net. I am excited to announce that the date for the popular Escape to the Cape has been confirmed. Be sure to save the date for August 20th. This event is still in the planning stages, so more information will be announced in the coming months.

More socials and events are in the works and will be announced once we get confirmation from the various venues. Be on the lookout for emails from Ian Gerada via “enews” with more information on upcoming and current events. You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at goldcoastregion.org/calendar and on clubregistration.net for event updates. Our PCA year is off to a great start. The Drive to the Keys was very well attended and the weather was beautiful. The autocross event one week later was a repeat of perfect weather and great attendance. We have provided several photos from each event for your enjoyment. Our Kassette staff continues to grow with the addition of staff writer AJ Moffit. AJ provides a very educational and enjoyable article about the autocross event. Many of the photos at the PBIR event were taken by AJ’s husband, Andrew. Team Moffit also provided lunch delivery while Dottie and Steve preformed their “A team” duties. Gold Coast region is run by volunteers so if you want to get into the PCA fun zone, come to an event and get involved.

By the time you receive this issue of the Kassette, the Rolex 24 will have finished and we will be racing at the 48 hours at Sebring. This year we have twice as many volunteers as 2021 and we have a great field of racers who are looking forward to our southern hospitality and warmer weather. The March issue of the Kassette will provide full coverage of the largest club race in the world for which our region is co-chair with Suncoast region. Once I volunteered to work this event I have returned to help for fifteen years. My wife and I celebrate our anniversary each year with hundreds of PCA friends. We have received favorable feedback about the new format and header changes. In this issue we are making a modification to make your readability easier. Please

continue to provide your feedback so we can continue to improve your magazine. If your family has a PCA Junior member, the flyer below is for you. The Juniors program is a great opportunity for our younger PCA members. Dottie and her team have a great day in the park planned for early March. Save the date. March 12 is the date for the Everglades Rally and national park tour. Enjoy your Porsche,

Roger

The Porsche 2022 Lineup – My Favorite Models According to the Chinese, 2022 is the year of the tiger. I think that it could very possibly be the year of the Porsche. Despite COVID, chip shortages and Tesla, sales in 2021 were strong. Clever product design means that Porsche (more than ever) is perfectly positioned to compete with the market at large. Let’s take a look at four models that emphasize this, along with where we think Porsche could be headed. Continued on page 23

Contributions to Success

Gold Coast Region PCA 2021 Awards The Gold Coast Region Holiday Dinner-Dance was the location for the annual awards presentation for our outstanding members. President Peter Olliviere made the presentations during the event to recognize several of our valued members for their substantial contributions made this past year. DIE PORSCHE KASSETTE is honored to share the official notice of such winners and acknowledge the efforts they put forth towards the betterment of our club, and enjoyment of all involved. There were three major awards: Enthusiast of the Year, Family of the Year, and Rookie of the Year. Additionally, there were five special Presidential Awards for significant contributions made beyond the three annual awards. Please share your congratulations and thanks to these special members when you next see them.

ENTHUSIAST OF THE YEAR Noemi & Nestor Sanchez – Noemi and Nestor could be found at most every Gold Coast event held in 2021. It was hard to miss them in their sweet Speed Yellow Carrera 911S, with matching seat belts, stitching, and sunglasses. Their participation was second to none, from the Poker Runs, to Cape Escaping, to just being there. We all became “enthused” through their efforts.

FAMILY OF THE YEAR Dottie & Steve Kidd – We would be hard pressed to find members more active than Dottie and Steve. Both are Past Presidents of GCR and do everything within their power to promote the Region and activity among members. From the Juniors Program (Dottie) to Autocross and Club Historian (Steve), two successful Poker runs (both), charitable giving events (48 Hours & Ronald McDonald House), they are constantly and consistently working to the highest level and encourage member participation in any and every Region event.

ROOKIE OF THE YEAR Mike Del Pozo – Mike became quite active this year in establishing a “Thirsty Thursday PCA Club Social” at Coral Springs Country Club, and then working to promote the event. He’s also instrumental in developing the very first golf outing for GCR scheduled for this coming May. Mike always has a great big smile, and welcoming attitude; Rookies are like that!

PRESIDENT’S AWARDS – SPECIAL RECOGNITION Christy Spangler, Ed Blair, Rick Veingrad, Ian Gerada, and Paul Laya – each of these recipients went well beyond their customary 110% effort to provide value to Gold Coast Region and the membership. Christy as Social Chair had huge duties coming out of pandemic restrictions. Ed coordinated a wonderful trip to North Georgia to drive the spectacular roads and enjoy some fall color and has the 2022 (and 2023) scheduled for the next go-around. Rick managed a highly successful “Escape to the Cape” that drew a crowd to the southwest coast of Florida for an amazing weekend. Ian, as Membership Chair, Web and Social Media Chair brought new efforts and enthusiasm to our newest members and region transfers in assisting them with club knowledge and keeping them informed of upcoming events. Paul was simply everywhere, usually acting behind the scenes without fanfare and stepping in as needed to provide assistance to the club and members when and where he could.

All these awardees deserve a hearty congratulations and sincere thanks for their efforts. They provide the spark that drives GCR. They add the inspiration to those around them. They show us all how to be involved with the cars and the people! That’s the PCA way!

Fourth Annual Islamorada Drive and Brunch by Cynthia Fluhart, SecretaryDRIVE & DINE TO ISLAMORADA FISH COMPANY ON JANUARY 8 TH FOUR ANNUAL

The day started out a bit soggy for the drive to the Keys, but the weather cleared up and the temperature and breeze were perfect. From all the feedback of our members, the fourth annual Drive & Dine to Islamorada was a big hit. We set a new record for attendance with over 180 members enjoying the sun, sand and seafood. Due to the big turnout, we had two group departures from both the Miami and Davie locations. We want to give a big thank you to five volunteers who received the waivers for registrants at the meeting points and lead the groups safely to Islamorada. Those volunteers were Mike Del Pozo, Steve Kidd, Ed Kohly, Christy Spangler and Rick Veingrad. Together as a team, members really enjoyed the day. Many of us also went to Gilbert’s in Key Largo to continue the fun and enjoy the live music and drinks. Due to the popularity of the event and for those who wanted to attend but could not, in July we plan to have the event again with the two different arrival times so more members can enjoy the event. Some of us may drive to Key West after lunch for an overnight stay. We will get a date from the restaurant and check on a hotel for a group rate. Within a few weeks, we will post the details on Clubregistration.net. Again, thank you for attending, it was great seeing everyone. Stay happy and healthy!

Gcr Autocross A J Moffit, staff writer If you don’t already know what Autocross is, it might be high time you learn. Those who participated in the PCA Autocross events at Palm Beach International Raceway on Saturday, January 15, 2022, can surely tell you what fun Autocross can be. Autocross is believed to have been invented in the late 1940s as part of a club competition in the United Kingdom. In a race against the clock where participants race one at a time through a navigated course, the course is typically mapped out with pylons or cones and is intended to focus on proper driving technique, which most notably includes the driver’s ability to react quickly. Planned by PCA’s own Dottie and Steve Kidd, who have organized Autocross events for over 20 years, these events might seem as if they are aimed towards men. In actuality, PCA events like these target everyone – from men to women to teens. Anyone with a driver’s license and desire to learn can enjoy the closed-track fun. A total of 64 people registered for the

two events, including 32 at the morning session and 32 in the afternoon. Autocross comes with its own set of obstacles, though. Steve explained, “One of our biggest challenges is finding new Autocross sites. We have three available to us, but if any readers can find us a new site, you would be our hero.” The event is more than just racing. It’s a collaborative effort where when you aren’t racing, you are working. Each session of 32 got divided into four groups of eight. Each group was color-coded: red, yellow, green, and blue. Then each group got assigned to race, work, rest, or work again. When attendees arrive at the event, first, they check-in at the front gate, letting the track know they are on the premises. Next, they check in with PCA and are assigned their color group. After that, participants walk the course. They can either walk around the track independently or go as a group with Steve or Dottie. The track walk shows the participants the peculiarities of the course, also noting where each workstation is. New drivers get assigned

an instructor who will run the track with them at least once, including on their first of six laps around the track. The instructor can continue riding along as necessary to ensure the driver feels secure. But remember that participating in the event requires a commitment from the drivers to work. Work assignments include Grid, Timing Tent, Course Moderators, and Finish Line. Each work assignment provides its own enjoyment, as each assigned task has merit and is integral to the fluidity of the event. A car can’t start without knowing it’s their turn to go, so the Grid position keeps the drivers in check, letting everyone know when it’s time to get to the start line. Next is timing, which is responsible for more than just the overall time that it takes a driver to run the course. Timing also subtracts for cones hit, off-course, and other situations that can incur penalties. What about driver safety? Safety is where Course Moderators come in. These workers are placed throughout the course. They reset cones that have toppled over, and radio in any discrepancies, such as when a driver goes off course. But safety doesn’t end there. It’s comforting to know that an EMS and tow truck are on property throughout the event providing peace of mind for everyone’s safety. Fortunately, to date, the EMS has not yet been needed. Everyone has their favorite workstation to partake in. James Stammer enjoys working the grid. “Everybody waits their turn,” he explains, “You tell the racer ‘Okay, you’re next,’ and you keep them in line. The idea is to keep them flowing, so there’s not a lot of downtimes.” What’s the best part of PCA Autocross? The camaraderie and everyone doing their part. James tells us,

“I’ve been to events where members show up, run first, then leave and don’t work. That never happens with PCA. It’s a great group of people.” To prepare for the race, you’ll want to make sure your car is set up for success both before and after the event. Pat Mitchell instructs, “Tires, brakes, and brake pads are the biggest wear items that you’re going to have. Make sure you’re looking at those both before and after you are done to make sure you don’t have too much wear and tear on them.” Once they’ve participated in their first Autocross, some people can’t wait to get back for more. Cone crusher Nestor Sanchez, who, along with his wife Noemi, were named PCA Enthusiasts of the Year in 2021, has partaken in four PCA Autocross events. At each event, he gets to experience something new. “Today, for the first time, I did Start,” he described with enthusiasm. “I love it. I got to see all the cars launch, I got to meet all the drivers, and it’s like I got to do a little interview with them and say, ‘Hey, how’s it going?’ and, for me, I really enjoyed that spot and would love to do that again.” For other people, it’s a time for bonding. Juliana Samper and her dad, Joaquin Samper, have been doing Autocross together for six years. Joaquin wanted Juliana to start Autocross because he knew the value of learning to drive a car properly, especially in tight situations. As Juliana details, the learning never stops. “Every time I learn something new. Even basic skills for when you drive. In fact, a deal I made with my dad when he got me my first car was that I had to learn how to change a tire.” For Dad, Joaquin, he couldn’t be prouder. Some make it a real family affair. Dan Schmidt, his wife Christy, and their 16-year-old son Tyler Davis all participated this year. Though Dan did one Autocross previously, it was the first Autocross event for Christy and Tyler, but

Dean Mazzola in a 1987 911 probably not their last. Tyler got more than he expected and described, “It’s just so much different than driving on a normal road. It’s almost the exact opposite of what you normally try to do when driving. And you’re pushing the car as fast as you could possibly go.” Mom, Christy, agrees, “It was really helpful going along with somebody that knew what they were doing. We would do something, and I would be like, ‘Oh, THIS is what you supposed to do,’ versus what I was doing previously.” Autocross seems to have a little bit for everyone, women and teens included. “It’s almost like people don’t know enough about it, but if they come, they will enjoy it,” says Joaquin Samper.

If you are interested in participating in a PCA Autocross event, more events like these are planned in the near future. In April, PCA will be going to Sebring and holding an Autocross there on Saturday, April 30, 2022. Registration is still open, and space is still available. Can’t make it to the PCA event but want to give Autocross a try? Though not affiliated with the PCA, the Palm Beach International Speedway runs Autocross events every other Friday night for a $75 fee. Still not sure if you are ready to race in an Autocross? Volunteers are both welcome and needed, so contact a PCA Officer, Board Member, or Committee Chair and get involved!

The BIG AutoX news for 2022 is a major change in PCA AutoX classing. There will quite a few less classes and no novice classes. As of this writing, the changes are still in draft form but with perhaps one or two exceptions, the new classes will be pretty close to the draft version, which will be available on the GCR website under the 2022 AutoX tab (insert link here). As some of you know, Gold Coast Region and most other PCA regions use the PCA Parade Competition Rules (PCRs) for classing cars for AutoX competition. As new Porsches are introduced, classes are periodically adjusted to try (as best as possible) to group cars with similar performance potentials together. See attached summary of the proposed changes below: Summary of proposed changes: (these are what PCA National proposes. GCR currently use PCRs for midsize regions. We will keep everyone up to date as new information is received). Classes were reduced by doing the following: Stock Classes (reduced from 13 to 9 classes) Combine S01, S02 and S03 into one class (S01). All early cars up thru 1977 911, plus the early Boxster in one class. Combine S11 and S12 into one class (S09). All Cayenne, Panamera and Macan in one class. Combine S10 and S13 into one class (S08). Carrera GT, 918, Taycan moved to class with fastest GT cars. Production Classes (reduced from 10 to 7 classes) Combine P02 and P03 into one class (P02). We left P01 out in this case, but it could be combined as in the S Classes. Combine P06 and P07 into one class (P05). These might be left separate as they will probably grow. Combine P08 and P10 into one class (P06). Carrera GT, 918, Taycan moved to class with fastest GT cars. Improved and Modified classes (reduced from 5 to 3 classes each) Combine I02 and I03 into one class (I02). Same for M02 and M03 (M02). Combine I04 and I05 into one class (I03). Same for M04 and M05 (M03). Lots of questions remain, such as when final approval is expected and whether PCA will have separate classing for small, medium and large regions as they do now. We hope to move to the new class structure as quickly as possible and may keep two sets of results until we have answers to the many questions we have. By the time you read this, our January and February AutoXs will be history and results should be available on the GCR website. With any luck we are hoping to do at least seven AutoXs in 2022. •

He’s been married to his sweetheart, Lee Ann, for 17 years. They have three dogs, of which two are Golden Retrievers and the third is a Golden “wannabe”; all are rescues.

On one day his dad was out of town, and he took the Targa for a spin (out for beer and cigarettes, a very long time ago). Driving through his hometown, Patrick

Ooch is in automotive software and marketing. His father was an automotive dealer in upstate New York and Patrick was introduced to all things automotive at an early age since he lived in a neighborhood with three car dealers (not including his father, who became one later in life). From lot boy to F&I Office, sales, management, and then consulting, he has been influenced by his environment and chose the profession. His father was always a car nut, but quite unsettled, never keeping many personal vehicles that long. One special vehicle his dad owned for an extended length of time was an ’87 G-Body Targa. Patrick’s father would let him drive it in reverse about 12

No longer in the retail end of the automotive space, Patrick is currently involved with dealer computer software and marketing to the top 150 automotive dealership groups in the US. Examples of customers would include the likes of Lithia, Sonic Automotive, Rick Hendrick Automotive, Penske, Larry H. Miller, and the Ed Morse Group. While he’s selling to many makes, as most of the dealer groups hold multiple manufacturer franchises, he is a Porsche guy through-and-through.

Patrick can be found driving his Turbo 911 to a myriad of events. He will participate in local car/coffee meets in south Florida, travel to Werks Reunion and Amelia Concours, and enjoy a weekly “Thursday Night Options” with his Porsche car aficionados and buddies. Ooch can also be seen out with Vintage Vices (an air-cooled group from Miami) or doing a local run with our other friend Ruben Fuentes in a Ruben’s Run or two. He’s living the Porsche lifestyle and wanting more. was clocked on radar doing about 85 in a 35-mph zone by the local sheriff. The sheriff, who knew his dad, let him go, as the officer of the law thought it was Ucci the father. His dad came home sometime later and had the occasion to enjoy a cup of coffee with his sheriff buddy. Patrick had not told his dad of the incident. They had a “talk” when dad got home. Punishment was apparently not too severe, as it is suspected that father and son shared some of the same passion for speed. (We should note that neither PCA nor GCR would ever condone such disregard for traffic laws. Plus, it was a different time and place.) Today, Patrick senses his father with him while enjoying his 930 Turbo in local PCA or other friendly PCar drives. Dad is always with him on these events in spirit

| Feb 2022

The 911 Turbo was acquired a few short months ago, 20 months to be exact, after a long and exhaustive search. Patrick was specifically looking for a 930-vintage turbo, but in a non-standard color. The turbo in the non-standard color option was the challenge. He was fortunate to find his car in a highly desirable color, and equally fortunate to have found this Porsche before the values exploded. Once the turbo was acquired, Ooch joined Gold Coast Region PCA. So, he has been with us for 20 months to match the length of ownership. Recognizing the joy of Porsche ownership for both the pleasure of driving and for the people Porsche seems to attract (sound familiar?) and Patrick is on another hunt for his second PCar. This time he’s interested in researching a 356 Coupe, perhaps an “outlaw” –

especially an Emory. It figures as Ooch’s favorite Porsche models are the 959, the 917, and anything that Emory puts on the road. Ooch appreciates “seeing the cars kept as original while taking advantage of the new technologies that are available today. Patrick suggests, “it’s amazing to see what and how the cars respond to things like this. The cars are literally timeless and will continue to be.” Patrick has certainly touched a strength of Porsche, as being timeless originals, and few could argue with that point. Visiting with Patrick on a recent Thursday evening event, we find out that while he’s still hunting for the Emory Outlaw, he is expanding his Porsche collection. The newest acquisition is a ’97 Carrera Coupe, a 993 in Artic Silver. He was fortunate to learn of this car through his friend in Palm Beach, who also connected him to the 930 Turbo. Ooch will be the third owner of a “still-in-thewrapper” 911, which is virtually pristine and has only 30K miles on the odometer. He claims that there is one small oil leak to be addressed.

garage, but LeeAnn’s steed will not be spending any time outdoors. So, it sounds like there may be a four-post vehicle lift added in the not-too-distant future, LeeAnn permitting! The second Porsche in the garage wasn’t the Emory, but he didn’t want to miss a great opportunity on the 993 while looking. The next question might be, where is he going to put the 356 Emory when he finds it? We guess that will be a bridge to build/cross when the right Porsche comes into view. Acquiring another Porsche, as Patrick explains, “is definitely a disease I don’t want a cure for . . . .”

The Ooch Turbo on the road, goin’somewhere.

His second Porsche acquisition, a low mile 993 Carrera Coupe Good luck with that oil leak. No doubt this newest 993 will be treated with care. Ooch is a car guy with outstanding detailer skills. Once in the garage, Patrick will work on the color correction and ceramic coating for the 993, as he did on the 930. Patrick’s biggest challenge will be car storage. This is a common lament among those lucky few with multiple PCar collections. At home there is a two-car

(Continued from page 8) 1. 2022 Porsche Cayenne This is the car that saved Porsche from going bankrupt. It is a very polarizing model. Whether you belong to the love or hate camp, you have to agree that the Cayenne commands a special place in the Porsche collection. It proved once and for all that sportiness can be combined with practicality. I’ve seen the recent trend of moving away from diesel powertrains affect this segment. Now the base Cayenne is only available in the twin turbo V6 gasoline variant. Looking more closely I’d be inclined to think that the long-term plan with this model is to go fully hybrid, with a view to becoming electric.

the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which practically oozes class and performance in equal amounts.

are yet unable to afford the Taycan, as Porsche may be introducing a cheaper EV. Honorable Mention – 2022 Porsche 718 Making the top 10 list of Car and Driver’s best automobiles is no mean feat, but Porsche managed to pull it off with the 718. This is also the only Porsche available in a 4-pot version, which is rumored to appear stateside this year. If you are looking to get into the Porsche experience, but don’t have the financial clout to box in the 911 ring, this may well be the ticket to ride.

3. 2022 Porsche 911 Just like an parfum, the 911 is the essence of Porsche. It doesn’t make concessions for practicality, luxury, or economy. This is about performance. This is about driving experience. What we love about the 911 range is how Porsche has made the experience accessible to all owners by offering such a wide range of variants. In my mind no top 10 list would be complete without a 911 or two lurking around. I am All Porsche, All the Time of course completely biased and absolutely If all this has left you wondering which Porsche is right for you, I don’t blame love and drive a 911. you. 2. 2022 Porsche Panamera Barely ten years old, this model line is again demonstrative of Porsche’s acute understanding of the dynamic auto market. Can you combine sportiness with luxury? Absolutely. If there was one model that proves that in a Porsche you can have your cake and eat it, too, it would be the Panamera. I love the sumptuous interior and the fact that you no longer need to think twice before taking your partner and kids. My personal favorite in this range is

Why 48? A Driver’s Perspective by Mark Johnson, Gold Coast Region The initial Porsche Club Race in Florida was run in 1994 when the Suncoast Region and the Gold Coast Region of PCA joined forces and held their first co-hosted event in Sebring, Florida. The Club Racing event, now known as the “48 Hours at Sebring,” has become the premier Porsche Club Racing (PCR) event of the year, a Superbowl of sorts, a Daytona 24, or a Sebring 12 Hour. But why? A myriad of reasons leads over 350 cars and drivers, their teams, and friends in their pilgrimage to Sebring in early February each year to “run what you brung.” The reasons? Probably first and foremost is the Florida winter weather that is generally much better than experienced in the rest of the country. There is no snow, abundant sunshine, and warm temperatures. Imagine the Porsche racer in Lincoln, Nebraska or perhaps Chicago with ice, freezing weather, etc. and working in their garage with mittens. Florida orange juice, warmth, & SUNSHINE – yeah, that’s the ticket. Second, hey – it’s Sebring, the home of American endurance racing. The track is simply historic for a ton of reasons, and it is a true test of driver and machine. Sebring is challenging on so many levels and being able to run well here will provide a great boost to one’s ego while proving the ability of your machine to handle the stress of racing. Speed and deft handling are paramount on this flat and bumpy circuit. A driver’s early season skills are certainly honed to a fine edge at Sebring. Third, it’s the competition! Over 350 cars, drivers, race teams, and friends find the four-day race weekend to be among the best challenges in Porsche Club Racing. With cars from all over the country, California to Maine, Washington to Florida, the best of the best come to central Florida in the winter. They whet their appetite, run their new (or old) cars, and see what they have gained or lost over the winter break. The exceptional level of competition at the 48 Hours at Sebring yields very quick feed-

back on the condition and speed of the car, and the skill level of the driver and race support team. Doing well at the 48 Hours event can set the tone for the entire year of PCA Club Racing. And it is simply a superbly run event! Suncoast and Gold Coast PCA folks have been working the weekend for over 25 years, and experience counts. These regions are supported by PCR personnel for scrutineering, scoring & timing, actual race administration. At the same time the Region volunteers make certain that paddock space is properly arranged, grids are marshalled, tech inspection is quick and efficient, registration is easy, and so on. Quite often there are more volunteers available from the local regions than places for these folks to work. So, if they can’t work, they watch and enjoy the excellent club racing. There is a tremendous amount of camaraderie that is evident with the off-site dinners between the friendly drivers, and during the catered dinner at the track on Saturday. Often, it will be an evening at Chicanes at the Inn on the Lakes in Sebring where a fine meal is enjoyed between racers and spouses over a bottle of great wine and a bourbon or two. What better way to enjoy a great day of racing? It’s the people, the social side and the relationships that start in the paddock or on the track that lead to evenings of stories and long-lasting friendships. A dinner at Chicanes is a dinner with greatness, as the restaurant is home to photos and stories of endurance racing at the track for 70 years. If casual dining is preferred many of the attendees can be seen at Jimmy’s Greek, the Sebring Diner, or Dimitri’s Family Restaurant. Sebring is “old Florida,” and the charm of the city and track lend to enjoyment of a great weekend to complement the exceptional Porsche-exclusive racing. At the 2021 edition of the 48 Hours at Sebring we had the opportunity to speak with a group of racers who all hailed originally from Memphis, TN. Dr. Mark Reed started Club Racing in 2015 and now will compete in his seventh year at Sebring. He enjoys getting back together with several of his Memphis buddies who now reside in Orlando, or St. Petersburg, FL and other areas of the country. According to Mark, “It is awesome competition, and

just too much fun!” He runs a Cayman S in GTB-1, which is one of the largest classes in the event, with perhaps as many as 25 cars. Another GTB Cayman skipper is Angus Rogers of Sarasota, FL. While Angus is relatively local to Sebring, he greatly enjoys running there. As noted above, the volume of competitive vehicles from all over the country, the weather, the epic history of the track and the skills and speed necessary to do well are what draws him to the 48 Hours. Both Angus and Mark run several Club Racing events throughout the year, having competed at VIR, Road Atlanta, Road America, COTA, and elsewhere, but it is Sebring and the great competition that brings them to central Florida in early February. One of the greatest aspects of PCA racing is the large and diverse number of classes. A racer can choose to enter a car in the competitive and expense level which is most comfortable for them. This works for every member who chooses to go Porsche Club Racing. PCA has 13 stock classes, Spec classes, GT 1-6 formula classes and GTC and GTA for

factory Cup Car groups, for both men and women. There are levels upon levels of competition for anyone so interested. And the wheel-to-wheel adventure is substantially more challenging and enjoyable than driving around the track in your most recent DE event. Porsche Club Racing is a classy organization with awesome people who enjoy driving their cars as they were meant to be driven. It’s the cars and the people at the 48 Hours of Sebring who make the event a winner every year. Welcome to Sebring and the Porsche race party!

How’s all that for the WHY?

Then it was time for the interior. Here I decided to create a unique Wolfsburg edition 986. I searched high and low for the specific material I had in mind and finally found it. The interior was originally full graphite gray leather. I decided that to better integrate the fabric inserts it needed a two-tone leather restoration, so black and gray was the way to go.

Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Updating and got Belted! During the last year and a half (through most of the pandemic) I’ve finally been restoring my 1998 Boxster. She’s 24 years old now and with 300,000 miles on the clock it was due time. I had done a lot of the “invisible” work already: performance upgrades such as fully modified air intake, equal length headers, Pedro Sport Exhaust, ECU tuning, larger brakes, adjustable suspension and drop links, among others. But now was it time for the eye-candy! I decided to restore it to my vision of what I would have wanted the car to be from the factory. That meant some exterior mods (adding side skirts), removing all the dings and doing fullbody paint, but keeping the same Glacier White color. A new convertible top was also now a must. I never liked the small glass rear window, so I kept the original top with the big, clear plastic window, and finally, I added a new carbon-fibre hood with a monochrome Porsche Crest to point the way!

Finally for the “pièce de résistance” I wanted deviating color seatbelts! Obviously, with the interior changes, orange was the obligatory color. Because I am a Club Racing Scrutineer, I am trained to look at every racecar’s seatbelts before every race while doing the mandatory safety checks. In a racecar, seatbelts cannot be more than five years old and they cannot show any signs of abrasion, stretching, or any other type of damage. If they do, the racecar owner must replace them by the next race or they can’t go on track until they do. It’s that important.

My youngest granddaughter really liked them!

Correlating those requirements to my car, I noted that my OEM seatbelts were 24 years old and because it’s a convertible, they’ve been subjected to many hours of direct UV light and probably rolled and retracted close to 15,000 times! (I figure, to be conservative, twice a day times 20 years). So the decision to replace was a sound one.

Since I’m a one-man-band and a DIY’er, I figured that I would find out the length of each side of the seatbelts, go online and order the two-inch webbing material from the many resellers, pick the perfect orange tone and replace it myself since I have a sewing machine and some strong thread material. Piece of cake . . . well; not so fast. It turns out that the vast majority of the two-ince webbing material sold online (and offline as well) is not intended to be used for seatbelts, but rather as strapping and or towing material. Some of them, including many from China, may even have “DOT

26

Die Porsche Kassette

| Feb 2022

Approved” stamped on them. Anyone not knowing the whole story could think such designation is legit, but DOT regulates tire manufacturing, not seatbelts. Seatbelts are regulated by the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) which are issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Those standards can be very, very complex and very difficult to comply with. Because of those regulations there are just a handful of legitimate seatbelt-webbing manufacturers worldwide. Those regulations require, among others: G-force testing, tilt lock testing, webbing abrasion testing, salt spray testing, tensile test at 10,000 lb., tensile test at 5,000 lb., as well as a retractor cycling test. To be approved, seatbelts must comply with: • FMVSS Safety Standard #209, which specifies requirements for seatbelt assemblies. The requirements apply to straps, webbing or similar material, as well as to all necessary buckles and other fasteners and all hardware designed for installing the assembly in a motor vehicle and to the installation, usage, and maintenance instructions of the assembly. • FMVSS Safety Standard #302, which specifies burn resistance requirements for materials used in the occupant compartments of motor vehicles. Its purpose is to reduce death and injuries to motor vehicle occupants caused by vehicle fires, especially those originating in the interior of the vehicle from sources such as matches or cigarettes. • Society of Automotive Engineers - SAE #J386, which establishes the minimum performance requirements for pelvic restraint systems necessary to restrain an operator or passenger with a rollover protective structure (ROPS) in the event of a machine rollover.

By the way, the OEM supplier to Porsche for seatbelts is the Berger Group, which was founded in 1968 in Alfdorf, Germany by Johan Berger and now has factories in Belgium, Spain, Germany and China. They are also the OEM supplier to Audi, Volkswagen, Lamborghini, BMW, Mercedes Benz, Mini, Ford, Jaguar, Volvo, Opel, Skoda and Hyundai among others.

The FMVSS also regulates the type of thread material used to finish the belt at the anchor points as well as the type of sewing machine used and the pattern of the stitching to finish the belt. It also requires that the manufacturer and the date of manufacturing be sewn in into a tag at the bottom of the belt. After having learned all this I have been carefully inspecting my customers’ seatbelts, especially those that have aftermarket (deviating color) belts. I have found that in every case (8) these aftermarket seatbelts were non-compliant with the FMVSS regulations. None of them had a manufacturer’s label, the sewing pattern was not the approved one, and I’m sure the stitching wasn’t either. I urge you to check yours if you have an aftermarket seatbelt and also if you have an older (20 years or more) vehicle. Look for that label and carefully inspect the belt for abrasions or wear areas. If you find any anomalies, please feel free to contact me and I’ll make recommendations based on your needs. Seatbelts can save your life as well as the lives of those riding with you! Blue Ridge Parkway Sunset Drive

Thomas J Sebastian purchased this 2012 997.2 GTS manual cabriolet on PCARMarket during the Covid lockdown in April, 2020. Thomas says that it was literally in mint condition. This is his ninth Porsche and the 997 series is his favorite of the water cooled 911s. In May, 2021 Thomas and his wife, Angela, went on a road trip with the 997.2 leaving Miami for eight days on the road. Their first stop was in Amelia Island where they participated in the Werks Reunion, followed by the Concourse on Sunday. Then they headed to Asheville, NC and drove on some amazing roads. This scene was captured while the sun was setting on the Blue Ridge Parkway at the Glassmine Falls overlook. Thomas says that “I particularly like this shot because of the sunlight hitting the trees and the wooden fence. It was an overcast day for the most part, but the sun came out at the end of an amazing day of driving on the Blue Ridge Parkway.” To top off the trip, they went to the Tail of the Dragon and he says that they both “truly got to appreciate how amazing my car is!” Thomas took this photo with an iPhone 11 Pro.
