Peter Olliviere, President
.
“LET’S GET INVOLVED”
Happy New Year to all of you and I hope you have had a good holiday season. This “President’s Corner” marks the end of my first year of what is a twoyear term as President of the Gold Coast Region. For that year I must ask myself if I achieved the things, I had set out to do twelve months ago. If I am to be honest with myself and all of you, I would have to say, “No”. Not that this was not a successful year; I just feel that I have could have done better in setting a tone for the Club. With all that said and done, I will still proclaim 2021 as being a successful year and expect 2022 to be even better. A few weeks ago, the Board held a planning session to lay out the calendar for 2022. This was done in a manner that allowed anyone who had an interest in a specific activity for the Club to take part and to express that to the Board and get the event placed on the calendar. It also encouraged a new group of members to
Christy Spangler, Social Chair Happy New Year! We closed out 2021 with a fun Mystery Poker Run event in Miami and a wonderful Holiday Party at the Colony West Country Club. I am humbled and honored to have received the President’s Award from Peter Olliviere; a big congratulations to all of the award winners. The Third Thursday Social was our last event of the year. Now that 2021 is in the rearview mirror, we can rev up for 2022. The social com-
volunteer to help bring these events to life. The meeting was well attended and produced a surprising number of new events that we have not done in the past. Besides the normal Porsches & Pancakes, Virtual Cocktail Parties, and Picnics we will be doing several special events and enhancing some of our “old faithful” events. In January we will be doing our Dine-and-Drive to the Keys, followed in February by a Valentine’s Day Dineand-Drive. But the fun doesn’t stop there; every month has a premier event associated with it. It will be the type of event that holds center stage and is a “must attend” event. In May we are planning our first charity golf event, whether you play golf or not. Porsches by the Bay will return this year with a couple of surprises to enhance the image and prestige of this long-standing event. For those who enjoyed The Escape to the Cape, well, it will be back in August, with several new features to increase the fun. I could go on, but you get the idea: we will have something going on every month of the coming year. Gold Coast is going to rock in 2022! Although our Community Service and Charity efforts have been good, we have not been consistent. We need to “step up our game” and will do so this year by the creation of a committee whose sole job will be directing the Club’s efforts in this area. We were rewarded for our efforts in
2021, so let’s try to do better this year. The AutoX Program will continue to be strong with four events scheduled for the year, along with what we hope will be two Driver Education events. Tours will continue with a North Carolina trip scheduled this year, along with some shorter overnight events. None of these things would happen if Gold Coast didn’t have as strong a group of volunteers as we do. No one here is paid for their efforts; we pay the same fees to attend events as the general members do, even as we are putting on the event. This mighty group of volunteers is what makes this club work, but we always need more people to get involved. There are several areas where you could get involved. There’s the Social Committee, if you like to help put on social events. If you’re into driving fast, AutoX and DE would be right up your alley. All you must do is pick an area of Club involvement that applies to you and get involved. Let’s make that the slogan for 2022: “Let’s Get Involved!”
mittee had a successful 2022 calendar planning session, and we will be bringing back some favorite events as well as new ideas for socials and activities. We are excited for what is in store for the new year! Thank you to the social committee volunteers who were able to attend and commit to bringing and facilitating great ideas and to Porsche West Broward for hosting our planning session. Our first event of the year is a club favorite: the Dine & Drive to the Islamorada Fish Company on January 8th. Sign up asap on clubregistration.net! For the golfers in our membership, I am excited to announce that we are planning our first ever GCR charity golf tournament. Save the date for May 14th! More details to come.
Check out the 2022 calendar on page 9 . More socials and events are in the works and will be announced once we get confirmation from the various venues. Be on the lookout for emails from Ian Gerada via “enews” with more information on upcoming and current events. You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at goldcoastregion.org/calendar and on clubregistration.net for event updates. If you are interested in volunteering or have an idea for something fun, please contact me at socials@goldcoastregion. org. Let’s make 2022 a great year for the Gold Coast Region!

It’s 2022, the New Year! A time to look toward the fresh promise that January 1st brings each year. At the Kassette, we have been stepping up our game and working to provide the Gold Coast Region newsletter an improved look, pertinent articles, and simple enjoyment for our readers. We shared a few of these upgrades in the past couple months. This month we are introducing the balance of our new “headers” for those messages from our key officers and for the regular monthly columns. Look for these as you read through our January issue. They are: FIRST TURN – The President’s Message -- The first corner in any automobile race is crucial for those in the first 2 to 3 rows. You can’t win the race in the first turn, but you certainly can lose it! As such, it is important for our President of GCR to offer his or her thoughts and encouragement for the month ahead. Hence, our President is offered the “FIRST TURN.”
START YOUR ENGINES – New Member Column – The Membership Chair provides the GCR’s welcome to our new and transferred members. They provide insight into the Region makeup and presents a bit of interesting insight into all things Porsche. SHIFT INTO SOCIAL – Social Committee Message – We’ve been using this header already, and the goal of “Shift into Social” is a quick look at the recent past and coming events for the current month. KEYSTROKES – Editor’s Notes – Read the “Editor’s Notes” and gain a quick glance at what is inside. Learn how our team is working to bring everyone the news and photos of our membership. FINDING GOLD – Member Feature – Our Gold Coast Region members are interesting and diverse. We provide a profile of one or two members each month and of their lives with Porsches. TECHNICAL WIZARDRY – Pedro’s Tech Corner - Basically all Porsche knowledge shared by a Tech Wiz, Mr. Pedro P. Bonilla!
AROUND THE CONES – Autocross Updates – A brief synopsis of Autocross schedules and results, including a tip or two to help you get around the cones faster, for next time. CLASSIFIED ADS – This section is self-explanatory; it is a forum to sell Porsches and Porsche stuff. A PHOTO FINISH – This regular feature was added in 2021 to offer a cool picture of a member’s Porsche every month. The pics have been STUNNING! Look for the new column headers, new layouts, new feature articles; about YOU, our valued members! The 48 Hours at Sebring Club Race will be held at the beginning of next month, 3-6 February. Don’t miss the largest Porsche club race in the world. Volunteer positions are still open: sign up at www.48hoursatsebring.com for a great racing experience. See you at the track,
Roger

The saying “he’s had his chips” just got an entirely new meaning in the post-COVID world. Coming off the back of GM’s recent announcement to suspend production at 8 of its 15 U.S. plants for the next two weeks, I couldn’t help but wonder . . . . Why? Understanding the shortage stems from the time-worn demand and supply equation. Unlike the common misconception that COVID caused production to stagnate, it was in fact the opposite. The sudden spike in people working from home had a knock-on effect, pushing the demand Continued on page 12

CHRISTMAS CARDS from GCR Mark Johnson, staff writer, with contributions from Dottie and Steve Kidd , Christy Spangler Certainly, one holiday great tradition is sending and receiving “Christmas Cards”. Did you send yours this year? Gold Coast Region of PCA did, but in a substantially different way – with POKER CARDS! What? Wait, Huh? Yes, GCR PCA held a “Poker Rally” on Saturday December 11th to benefit the kids at the Nicklaus Children’s’ Hospital in Miami, FL. A total of 52 Porsche automobiles, with driver and navigator/passenger, and a few extra in-car ride along peeps went on a poker run to collect their best 5-card poker hand. One of the key stops was made at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. Each Porsche brought a toy for the kids to deposit at the hospital. The event had 116 in-car participants of which 24 of the driver/navigator teams acted as GCR volunteers who met the vehicles at the start, intermediate stops, and at the end of the rally. They organized check-in, parking, dealing the playing cards, and other necessary administrative efforts. The event was also supported by 12 PCA Junior members who joined in the fun. The whole she-bang was conceived, mapped, and organized by Dottie & Steve Kidd.

The start of the run was located at ParkHaus1 in Miami. The 50-plus cars were separated into four groups. At the start each Porsche was handed their initial poker card and sent off in a group with a set of directions to find the second location. Three more stops followed with cars gathering playing cards at each location along the way. At the final stop each Porsche showed their best hand to determine the poker ‘winner’. Intermediate stops were at Matheson Hammock Park (#2), First Class Auto (#3), Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (#4), and the final stop at Wheels Boutique (#5). ParkHaus1 provided coffee and Cuban pastries at the start. Participants received drinks, snacks, and a photo-op at First Class Auto. We dropped the toys at Nicklaus, and Wheels Boutique had fruit and finger sandwiches for all at the finish. From a 9:30 am start to the 2:30 finish it was a great fun day of driving and giving. The route to each location had been scouted and run several times by Steve & Dottie to ensure correct directions were given and allow sufficient time for the entire run.
| Jan 2022
Photography by Christy Spangler and Ania Krumenacker The route and stops were sufficiently difficult to allow most everyone to get lost at least once. So, who won? Everybody, from participants, to volunteers, to our sponsors! It was a beautiful day for all drivers, navigators, passengers and volunteers who each had a superb time driving through several unique and beautiful roads in Miami-Dade. The biggest winners were the kids at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital with the new toys GCR delivered during the run. And the best poker hand? ‘Three Kings’ (seasonally appropriate of course) won by Rob Cohen and Julia Dance. Thank you ParkHaus1 for hosting the start, First Class Auto for the snacks and photo op, and to Wheels Boutique for the great sandwiches and desserts at the final stop of the event. Your individual support for our Club during the vehicle stops was much appreciated. Special thanks to Steve & Dottie Kidd for setting the route and organizing the entire event. You each truly represent the “Porsche & People” spirit of Gold Coast Region PCA. There are quite a few kids at Nicklaus Children’s Hospital who are happier because of your efforts.

(continued from page 8) for new tech through the roof. Folks all over the world suddenly found their older hardware putting limits on their creativity, while others were forced indoors and turned to gaming for (excuse the pun) consolation? Automotive manufacturers, on the other hand, dialed back their production and so didn’t place chip orders. In the blink of an eye, their usual share was simply absorbed by other manufacturers desperate to meet the increased demand. Then, and suddenly, taking the bus with Joe Covid (oops, sorry, we meant Bloggs) wasn’t cool and people went back to buying new vehicles. This left automakers neatly checkmated. Producing a car is a complicated dance of suppliers, workforce, and demand coordination. Microcontrollers are woven into the very fabric of automotive construction, and it is frankly impossible without them. It doesn’t help that most microchips used in
vehicles come from one of two factories in China. This is why production has ground to a halt. How? Now that we have a good idea of the reasons behind the current crisis, we may ask, how is Porsche dealing with it? Fortunately, it has the backing of VAG (Volkswagen Audi Group), which has helped somewhat to dissipate the effects of the shortage. It got this right by favoring the production of the higher end of the group, prioritizing the more expensive brands in favor of higher profit margins. In doing this, VAG was able to post record profits for the first half of 2021. The outlook isn’t all rosy though. Porsche CFO Lutz Meschke warns us that, “In spite of all this success, we are welladvised to keep both feet on the ground.” The third quarter, which we have just broached, is crunch time. Audi cautions that “in view of the continuing shortage it is not expected to be possible to compen-
sate in full in the course of the year for lost production.” Since Audi are the biggest profit contributor to the group, it looks like Porsche is in it to finish the race to the end of 2021 on a good note. (Albeit not a totally triumphant one.) Where? Where does this leave us? In our opinion, we are going to see VAG push to maintain a high production rate of Porsche since it pays dividends. This will mean that although there won’t be an oversupply, an excessive shortage is also unlikely. Ironically this means it’s neither a good time nor a bad time to buy the 911 GT3. Unless of course, you were planning on getting a Mustang instead . . . . Until next time, friends! Drive safe,

A Second Life by Ryan Partin, GCR member If you were a kid growing up in the late 80s and early 90s and crazy about cars you had a poster of one of the three iconic cars at the time. Surprisingly, mine was a red Italian. I would laugh later in life about that childhood decision. My mother’s car would be my first experience with a Porsche. I was so young when she had that 1972 red 914, but I can still remember every spot of rust on it like it was yesterday. Being a blue collar family, my parents couldn’t afford the “nice Porsche” but my father, being a mechanic, did his best to get her a Porsche. Over the years her Porsches would evolve from that red 914 to a bronze 1977 924 that always smelled like gas, to a yellow 944, which was made from two cars welded together and spun out every time it rained. Let’s just say none of these cars would win a concours show but she loved them as if they could. Fast forward twenty-plus years and a lot had changed. My parents divorced and I followed my father’s footsteps into auto racing. My mother also followed her passions, building a career and finally buying
2002 Porsche just purchased that “Nice Porsche”: a two-year-old 2002 986 Boxster. I was proud of her never giving up on her dreams and on owning that Porsche. The purchase of that car marked an important achievement in the second chapter of her life. In late 2020, I got a call from my mom asking what she should do with her beloved Boxster. For the last 16 years the car lived outside in the South Florida weather and time had taken its toll—seriously taken its toll. The car was at a local German auto repair shop for the third time in a year; it wouldn’t start, and none of the electronics worked. The estimate would start around $5,000 to diagnose and repair some but maybe not all the issues. My mother didn’t want to part with the car but asked me if she should sell it;

sensibly, was it worth repairing again? I told her I would come get the car and dig into it as I wasn’t racing with Covid going on and had the time. I knew my mom didn’t want to part with her Boxster, for it symbolized so much of what she had been able to achieve in the second chapter of her life. So I hooked up the race car hauler and headed south to see if I could be my mom’s hero. Boy; I had no idea what I was getting myself into! I’ve worked on a lot of different types of race cars, but nothing of the German sort. I didn’t even know what a “Frunk” was or how to get the thing open. After a couple weeks and learning what a Frunk was, I figured out that the Boxster suffered from the dreaded convertible top drains being clogged. This had led to some serious corrosion. After about 45 days I sent my mom
Boxster in car hauler
a video: the Boxster was running, windows working, the central alarm working, everything working. But now that the car was running, my mom asked if I was ok with her selling it; being an older car, it needed constant TLC that she couldn’t give to `it. To be honest, I didn’t want her to sell the Boxster. I became attached to this machine—probably like mom was with that yellow 944 back in the day. Well, maybe not that one, but the other ones. I was bitten by the Porsche bug. This couldn’t have happened at a better time as I was considering after 25 years of amateur and professional racing everything from dirt track cars in Oklahoma to Endurance racing at Sebring that it might be time to call an end to my racing career. Now what would I do? I have spent every day and night of my life centered on racing, whether in the race shop or on the track, as a child with my father and as an adult. Going fishing or stamp collecting isn’t really my speed. A couple days later I got a call from my mother saying there is a FedEx letter coming and to let her know when I get it. When I opened it up it was the title to the Boxster with a note saying, “I hope she brings you as much happiness and joy as she did me. Promise you won’t turn her into a racecar. And when can we go shopping for my next Porsche?” Just as the Boxster was so important to my mother in the second chapter of her life, it would now be the same for me, no longer racing. Oh—remember that poster on the wall when I was a kid earlier? Now it’s one that I’m truly passionate about, a German from Stuttgart, not the red Italian. What about shopping for the next one? Well, we did go shopping together and my mother found a black 718S that she adores. I have always been passionate about cars, but they were always tools: something that was built to compete with and then on to the next one that’s faster or more capable of winning. I now understand why, after all those early Porsches my mother had, she is just as passionate about her new 718S as she was with her first 914, because that’s how I feel about my Porsche Boxster. PS: If anyone knows why a 2002 986’s fast flashers come on randomly for no reason, I could really use the help. lol -

Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair Thanks to all the competitors that supported out 2021 AX program! Thanks Dottie and Steve As most of you know, our December AutoX at the PBIR Kart Track was rescheduled by those at the track to January 15th, 2022. While we were disappointed about the date change, we are happy that PBIR is still open, and we have not seen a hard closing date for the track. This will be our first event run under the new format including two smaller events in one day. Event # 1The Morning event—for the early birds 7:45-8:45 Check-in /Tech/track walk 8:45-855 Driver meeting 9:05 First car out 12:00-1:00 Break, afternoon group should start arriving
Event # 2 The Afternoon event—for the late risers 12:15-1:15 Check-in /Tech/track walk 1:15-1:25 Driver meeting 1:35 First car out 4:35-? Finish of competition runs and possibly start fun runs, time permitting
Whats New: A two-event structure that won’t take up your entire day. You will have either the morning or afternoon to drive AutoX and the other half of the day to volunteer or watch the racing and socialize. Hardcore competitors may run both events. Pirelli has furnished some really nice hats for the Men’s and Ladie’s FTD. In the works: an AutoX school on Friday February 4th is also scheduled. Stay tuned for more details about the school.

Mark Johnson, staff writer
It’s a KREZY New Year With the start of 2022, the year is full of promise, opportunity, and without a doubt much fun expected. While the promise and opportunity are a bit more traditional, fun can arrive in many forms or fashions. This KREZY year will begin with a story about a wonderful Porsche and its family connection. Joe Scalia Jr. owns a 1984 Guards Red 911 Turbo (930) that was aftermarket converted to a “slant nose” and upgraded with a substantial engine modification, performed by an authorized Kremer shop. According to Wikipedia, Kremer Racing, based in Cologne, Germany, is an international race shop known for building exceptional upgrades into Porsche engines. This Porsche is truly a beast, but the best part is the back story. Joe Scalia Sr (dad Scalia) originally purchased a 1981 Turbo 924. Senior Joe drove the car for many years, with young Joe Jr. enjoying a multitude of miles with Pop Scalia. The 924 was the Porsche Jr. grew up in. Once Joe Jr. reached his senior year in high school, he drove the 924 Turbo. How many fathers would allow that today? “Get your own Porsche!” Or perhaps, “I’ll help you get one, son.” All that time Joe Jr. had been a fan of the slant nose Porsche, ever since he was 9 years old. With the 924 in Joe Jr’s hands, Senior acquired their first 1984 930 slant nose. Joe Jr’s passion for Porsche was stoked. Unfortunately, this ’84 MY 930 slant nose was lost in a fire in the new millennium, year 2000. The current 1984 911 was bought in 2001 to replace the fire-totaled vehicle. We understand that 930s were a bit easier to find back in the early days of this century than they are today and most certainly more affordable as well. Eventually, the 924 was sold, and as Joe Sr. aged the ’84 Porsche languished.
18
Die Porsche Kassette
In November 2017 about a month before his father passed away Joe acquired the 930 slant from his dad. The engine needed revitalizing; the interior was covered in mold. (When you open the door and breathe in, you can still enjoy the musty odor which is part of the car’s “character” and exceptional charm.) There were several dents on the left side of the car, and much of the electronics required attention. Each of these items was addressed methodically by Joe Jr. The left side of the car received a repaint, the interior was cleaned, and other areas of need were addressed, specifically with the engine being brough back to life. With the car now his, Joe Jr. took exceptional pride in bringing the car back to former glory and driving pleasure. He was performing what he calls a Krezzurection! The effort began in November ’17 and continues to the present day.
KREZY, sitting in a forlorn garage, waiting for Joe Jr. to begin the Krezzurection. It was Dr. Joe Scalia Jr’s intent to fully restore the vehicle. As progress was made, the car became drivable. At this point Joe made the decision to keep the 930 Kremer in working fashion (warts, bumps, non-matching L/R sides – more on that in a moment). He put plates on the car, a personalized Florida tag reading “KREZY!” As to why he selected the Miami Heat background; well, you may ask him. With the Porsche tagged and insured, the full restoration was delayed allowing Joe and his son Joey (9 – great age) to enjoy the Kremer KREZY together. The left side of the 930 as repainted did not match the right, being new-smooth-fresh, especially without the period correct decals. OK, so what? Additional character!

Out one Thursday with the PCar boys, stylish from any angle (kp-photography) This Porsche has an extensive modifications list. We could devote a full page (which Joe sent us), but we’ll leave that part of the story for him to tell in person. He loves speaking about the car, his experience, his dad. You’ll often find son Joey along with him at the many events they enjoy. Joe and KREZY (and Joey) have participated at DRT in Miami, both in 2020 and 2021 and in parade laps at Sebring (’20-’21). Joe and spouse Cari went to Werks Reunion ’21 and are already scheduled to attend the March ’22 event. He’s working on a trip to Porsche Experience Center ATL and expects to join a Rennsport Dragon Rally this year. Most every Thursday evening KREZY/Joe can be found with a few PCar buddies for a drink with dinner somewhere between Miami and Boca. Porsche Bonding! Joey Scalia was a recent participant in a Hagerty Juniors Porsche judging event as hosted by Gold Coast Region of PCA. Joe Jr. has been a PCA Gold Coast member for over 4 years. Beyond PCA sponsored events the Scalia boys attend monthly European car meets/meetings, multiple unique Cars n Coffees, and collaborating with PCar owners of similar vintage (G-body Porsche) and Turbo 930s. Dr. Joe’s favorite Porsche of all time is his 930 slant nose. He understands that he is living the dream with his car—and that’s an “understatement,” he suggests. WE LOVE YOUR PASSION, JOE! Son Joey is not yet fully converted to Porsche, as his fav is a 1970 Mustang Boss 429, in red. Joey is dreaming big! As KREZY is Guards Red, his dad thinks there is a “good shot” of winning over Joey’s heart at some point in the future. A reader might guess that the time will be somewhere around the period that Joey
having trained at Binghamton University and attended New York Chiropractic College in Seneca Falls, NY for his CP degree. He was born in Queens and raised on Long Island. Much of his time in upstate NY was spent enjoying the many picturesque drives through wine country, especially in the fall. Since moving to Florida, Dr. Joe has been a practicing Chiropractic Physician for over 21 years. Joe Scalia is known to his family as Joe-Joe, and with the boys, simply “Joe”
(sounds a bit like Blade Runner 2049). He admits to having a very special connection with his car, and he has always envisioned being able to share his and the Kremer slant nose story with fellow Porsche aficionados. Please don’t rush young Joey. He has plenty of right-seat time ahead of him. Yet we can’t wait to hear how you’ll pass this great Porsche on to him. Thanks for sharing, Joe; we’re honored to do our part to share your KREZY story.
Joe Jr & Joey enjoying a KREZY moment together gets his driver’s license and learns how to manipulate a manual transmission. Hmmmm; maybe Noah Ratner (Kassette July 2021) can help with that: “Both Feet IN!” Joe is married to his sweetheart, Cari, and they have two children, Joey (9) sister Mia (12). They don’t have pets yet, but the family is working on Ms. Mia to convince her that a dog would be a great addition. Joe and Cari have been married for fifteen years and reside in Coral Springs. He is a Doctor of Chiropractic medicine, Slant nose beauty basking in the sunrise, and waiting for many more miles of fun with Joe

A Holiday Celebration for Gold Coast Mark Johnson, staff writer, with contributions from Peter Olliviere, Ian Gerada and Christy Spangler The Gold Coast Region Holiday celebration was held in “The View at Colony West.” It was a wonderful scene for a special evening for GCR Porsche Club of America. Over 70 attendees were treated to spectacular decorations, a live musician/DJ, and a sumptuous dinner surrounded by the camaraderie of those club members in attendance. In truly festive mood, PCA membership enjoyed a dinner of roast brisket, glazed salmon, or grilled chicken, the main dish in a three-course meal that included a phenomenal cheesecake dessert. Entertainment for the evening was provided by Evan Grushka. He provided a broad selection of tunes to enhance the holiday spirit with a fun beat. The music encompassed the 70’s, 80’s 90’s as well as a few modern-day hits that had everyone on the dance floor. Gold Coast Region Club President, Mr. Peter Olliviere, presented his comments about the past year and our success in events and meetings despite the challenges created by the ongoing pandemic. He also expressed his optimistic insights for a better 2022, with a return to more normal activities. Based on recent Board and Social Committee planning meetings, GCR already has a very active schedule on tap for the coming year. Peter had the floor for perhaps the most enjoyable part of the evening (not to discount the dancing); the Annual Gold Coast Member Awards for the 2021 calendar year. Of note, these awards were presented to
Laura & Bud Harris
the GCR Enthusiasts of the Year, Noemi & Nestor Sanchez. The Region “Rookie of the Year” was won by Mike Del Pozo. The Family of the Year by Steve and Dottie Kidd. Each of these winners exemplified the spirit and passion of “It’s not only the cars, it’s the people” mantra of Porsche Club of America. Beyond these three annual awards, President Olliviere offered up 5 additional “Special President’s Awards” to those club members who jumped in and added value and enthusiasm to our GCR PCA group. These President Award winners are: Paul Laya, Rick Veingrad, Ed Blair, Christy Spangler and Ian Gerada When you next see these recipients, please extend your best wishes for their efforts on behalf of our organization. They make things happen for your Porsche pleasure and enjoyment of all our members and vehicles. We offer our thanks to all who attended and to those special folks who worked to create the magic of the evening. They are Cynthia Fluhart-Diaz, Ian Gerada, Christy Spangler. Cynthia, the very special flower arrangements were in a word: INCREDIBLE! GCR would also like to thank Foreign Affairs Motorsport for the 10 giveaways and for providing the Porsche vehicles on display. It was a beautiful Sunday evening, enjoyed by all. The photos also tell much of the story, all smiles. Make plans to attend the Holiday Party for 2022. We are building on greatness and success.

The 959
part 2
in America In a previous issue we discussed the beginnings of the 959 as well as its technical advances and immediate racing successes. Now we’ll tell you the rest of the story. The 959 was never meant to be a street car and certainly not a California car to be driven on normal city roads. Two years after the Gruppe B appeared at the Frankfurt Auto Show (1983), Porsche announced the introduction of the 959 with a production of 200 cars to homologate the model for competition. Even at the price of $250,000 all of the cars were quickly spoken for. When the U.S. Department of Transportation requested four cars to crash-test, Porsche said no. Without approval from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) the 959 could not be sold nor driven on US soil. Two of the first buyers of the 959 were Microsoft co-founders Bill Gates and Paul Allen. News of the banning of the 959 in America was not well accepted by the pair who decided to ship their cars to the West Coast anyway. Their contraband was soon discovered and impounded and reportedly confined to a California warehouse for more than a decade.

With no way to lawfully enjoy their 959s at home, some wealthy US owners decided that they needed to work on changing the law. was what they’d do. In 1990 a Seattle-based company called Vehicle Technologies, Inc. launched an attempt to import the 959 and have it approved for the USA, an effort that was quickly thwarted. Several year later, a group called The Special Vehicle Coalition engaged initiated discussions regarding proposed new legislation that would allow cars of note that were never sold new in the USA to be imported as individually-owned show exhibits. This costly and lengthy campaign finally paid off in 1998 with the arrival of the “Show and Display” (S&D) Law which permits significant cars such as the 959 to be driven on US roads for up to 2,500 miles per year. S&D however did not exempt the cars from having to be emissions compliant. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requires that vehicles less than 21 years old used on US roads need to meet air emissions standards for the year of manufacture. So, making a 959 compliant was not going to be easy, especially in California. For starters, the 959 never had catalytic converters nor was its Motronics brain programmed to recognize an oxygen sensor (although the car was built with the wiring harness and bung for a sensor). Reportedly a few factory retrofit kits were made available but it’s difficult to know whether that’s true or not. The first company to gain NHTSA and EPA approval for a Porsche 959 under the S&D legislation was G&K in Santa Ana, CA. They partnered with GIAC, a developer of vehicle software, and the first 959 was certified on September 2001. It took almost $50,000 of work to do it. But because the 959 had its engine derived from the 935/76 racecar, a powerplant which later also powered the 956 and 962C to victories at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, there were those who hoped for more from the newly certified 959 than just clean/ green performance. Enter Bruce Canepa, a California racer who became a Porsche fanatic. In 1988 he purchased a 959, which he thinks to this day is one of the best – if not the best – all-around sports car ever made. He also believed that the 959 had some additional potential performance built-in. He figured that it was good for 600 hp, so he set out to modify the 959 to make 600 hp while still hitting the EPA emissions targets. Based in Scotts Valley, CA, Canepa Design changed their 959s from a sequential-turbo setup to a twin-turbo operation using Garrett turbochargers. They installed new engine management systems and new exhausts which included catalytic converters. Two versions were prepared: a Phase 1 making 575 hp and a Phase 2 making 640 hp. They also offered a suspension package with tuned dampers and titanium coil springs, plus a new clutch and pedal assembly to improve feel. The original wheels were modified to accommodate 245/45R17 front and 275/40R17 rear Michelin Pilot Sport2 rubber. Nowadays, however, the 959 can be used in the USA with no certification other than the S&D certificate. This is because the EPA requirements expired once the 959 turned 21 years old. A total of 337 cars were built before production shut down in 2009. Most of the 959s in America were modified to comply with the existing regulations, but after 2010 a few factory-original 959s have come to America.

THANKS - GIVING! Enthusiastic GCR Volunteers Share & Make a Difference Mark Johnson, staff writer Gold Coast Region PCA members were out in numbers to contribute and assist in making Thanksgiving substantially better for many needy families in Fort Lauderdale, FL. It was a warm and happy morning at Carter Park on Sunrise Boulevard where GCR folks assisted Mr. Michael Shorter and his group of eleven HSCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) volunteers provide fresh food and a gift card to more than 300 families in the area. Michael Shorter and the wonderful folks from the HBCUs have been working and supporting the local community for fifteen years. Our PCA Region President, Mr. Peter Olliviere, is a close friend to Michael. When Peter learned of the effort a few years ago, it became an annual giving event for our Region. This year, Gold Coast Region donated over $7500 to the program, which was converted into $25 Publix gift cards that could be used to purchase “the bird”: the requisite turkey for the big day. Families were lined up early. Each drove through the park to receive the food, supported by FEEDING SOUTH FLORIDA. Cars were loaded with potatoes, yams, tomatoes, zucchini, a dozen eggs, a fresh pineapple, a bag of oranges, cucumbers, and the Publix card. A total of roughly 100 volunteers, including some twenty GCR members, loaded backseats, trunks, and the rear storage areas of the SUVs that drove through. The many volunteers offered cheerful wishes of “Happy Thanksgiving!” Many smiles were exchanged, and a fair amount of dancing was enjoyed, as Michael had a DJ with some great music to keep the tempo up and the cars moving! Thank you, Michael Shorter & friends, thank you GCR PCA members. Giving is Living!

No Parking Alex Silva submitted this photo of his 2011 997.2 Ruby Red 911 Cabriolet. He and his wife, Tati Cunningham, enjoy taking short city trips in their 911 that allow them to discover new places and often stopping for coffee or juice. On their way home from one of their drives, they stopped at the Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables to take this photo of their 911. South Florida does indeed have a lot of history and interesting areas to explore. Nothing quite says old Miami like the beautiful architecture of the Biltmore Hotel and all of the history it has seen since it was constructed in 1926. It makes a great backdrop that complements the design of Alex’s Ruby Red 911. Alex took this photo with an IPhone 11 Pro Max. I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming! Submit your photo to Die Porsche Kassette Photo Finish! Deadline: The 20th of each month to be considered for the following month’s issue.
