It’s a KREZY New Year With the start of 2022, the year is full of promise, opportunity, and without a doubt much fun expected. While the promise and opportunity are a bit more traditional, fun can arrive in many forms or fashions. This KREZY year will begin with a story about a wonderful Porsche and its family connection. Joe Scalia Jr. owns a 1984 Guards Red 911 Turbo (930) that was aftermarket converted to a “slant nose” and upgraded with a substantial engine modification, performed by an authorized Kremer shop. According to Wikipedia, Kremer Racing, based in Cologne, Germany, is an international race shop known for building exceptional upgrades into Porsche engines. This Porsche is truly a beast, but the best part is the back story. Joe Scalia Sr (dad Scalia) originally purchased a 1981 Turbo 924. Senior Joe drove the car for many years, with young Joe Jr. enjoying a multitude of miles with Pop Scalia. The 924 was the Porsche Jr. grew up in. Once Joe Jr. reached his senior year in high school, he drove the 924 Turbo. How many fathers would allow that today? “Get your own Porsche!” Or perhaps, “I’ll help you get one, son.” All that time Joe Jr. had been a fan of the slant nose Porsche, ever since he was 9 years old. With the 924 in Joe Jr’s hands, Senior acquired their first 1984 930 slant nose. Joe Jr’s passion for Porsche was stoked. Unfortunately, this ’84 MY 930 slant nose was lost in a fire in the new millennium, year 2000. The current 1984 911 was bought in 2001 to replace the fire-totaled vehicle. We understand that 930s were a bit easier to find back in the early days of this century than they are today and most certainly more affordable as well. Eventually, the 924 was sold, and as Joe Sr. aged the ’84 Porsche languished.

In November 2017 about a month before his father passed away Joe acquired the 930 slant from his dad. The engine needed revitalizing; the interior was covered in mold. (When you open the door and breathe in, you can still enjoy the musty odor which is part of the car’s “character” and exceptional charm.) There were several dents on the left side of the car, and much of the electronics required attention. Each of these items was addressed methodically by Joe Jr. The left side of the car received a repaint, the interior was cleaned, and other areas of need were addressed, specifically with the engine being brough back to life. With the car now his, Joe Jr. took exceptional pride in bringing the car back to former glory and driving pleasure. He was performing what he calls a Krezzurection! The effort began in November ’17 and continues to the present day.

KREZY, sitting in a forlorn garage, waiting for Joe Jr. to begin the Krezzurection. It was Dr. Joe Scalia Jr’s intent to fully restore the vehicle. As progress was made, the car became drivable. At this point Joe made the decision to keep the 930 Kremer in working fashion (warts, bumps, non-matching L/R sides – more on that in a moment). He put plates on the car, a personalized Florida tag reading “KREZY!” As to why he selected the Miami Heat background; well, you may ask him. With the Porsche tagged and insured, the full restoration was delayed allowing Joe and his son Joey (9 – great age) to enjoy the Kremer KREZY together. The left side of the 930 as repainted did not match the right, being new-smooth-fresh, especially without the period correct decals. OK, so what? Additional character!

Out one Thursday with the PCar boys, stylish from any angle (kp-photography) This Porsche has an extensive modifications list. We could devote a full page (which Joe sent us), but we’ll leave that part of the story for him to tell in person. He loves speaking about the car, his experience, his dad. You’ll often find son Joey along with him at the many events they enjoy. Joe and KREZY (and Joey) have participated at DRT in Miami, both in 2020 and 2021 and in parade laps at Sebring (’20-’21). Joe and spouse Cari went to Werks Reunion ’21 and are already scheduled to attend the March ’22 event. He’s working on a trip to Porsche Experience Center ATL and expects to join a Rennsport Dragon Rally this year. Most every Thursday evening KREZY/Joe can be found with a few PCar buddies for a drink with dinner somewhere between Miami and Boca. Porsche Bonding! Joey Scalia was a recent participant in a Hagerty Juniors Porsche judging event as hosted by Gold Coast Region of PCA. Joe Jr. has been a PCA Gold Coast member for over 4 years. Beyond PCA sponsored events the Scalia boys attend monthly European car meets/meetings, multiple unique Cars n Coffees, and collaborating with PCar owners of similar vintage (G-body Porsche) and Turbo 930s. Dr. Joe’s favorite Porsche of all time is his 930 slant nose. He understands that he is living the dream with his car—and that’s an “understatement,” he suggests. WE LOVE YOUR PASSION, JOE! Son Joey is not yet fully converted to Porsche, as his fav is a 1970 Mustang Boss 429, in red. Joey is dreaming big! As KREZY is Guards Red, his dad thinks there is a “good shot” of winning over Joey’s heart at some point in the future. A reader might guess that the time will be somewhere around the period that Joey
