Peter Olliviere, President

As you read this, we will be completing the first half of 2022 and start plunging headfirst into the second half. Looking back on the first half of the year, the club has had a very active calendar. The beauty of it is that the activities don’t stop. Because of the commitment of the Board of Directors and various Committee Members, the second half of the year will be just as full as the first half. For example, on June 4th, we are going to a private showing of Top Gun: Maverick. Then from June 12th to 18th will be the Porsche Parade in the Poconos Mountains. On August 20th and 21st is Escape to the Cape, and at the end of August is our Annual North Carolina Tour. When you add in the regularly scheduled socials, like the monthly Porsches and Pancakes and

3rd Thursday Dinners, you have a full calendar. I want to take a moment to talk about Escape to the Cape. Several people have asked what the event is and why they should attend. To understand the importance of Escape, you need to know the history of the event. Escape to the Cape was first proposed to be a standard dine and drive. These events are when members gather at a starting point and drive as a group to an interesting location for lunch. Today we have held several dine and drive events like these, including the Stone Crab Run and the Drive to Islamorada. These events each took place over the course of one day and were always very well attended. The Escape began as a dine and drive event called Conchy Joes Run. Conchy Joes is a Caribbean-style restaurant on the water in Jensen Beach, Florida. That first run took place in September of 2014 and had about one hundred and ten people in attendance. In 2015 and 2016, the event changed. Several people stayed overnight at the Sheraton Hotel on Hutchinson Island.

We had dinner at Conchy Joe’s, partied after dinner, and headed home the next day. In 2017 and 2018, the event morphed again when we moved away from Conchy Joe’s, and it became the Sanibel Island Run. PCA Gold Coast Region took over the Sheraton Resort on Sanibel Island, where we dined and danced the night away. Attendance at these events was each over one hundred and fifty PCA members having a good time. We didn’t have an event during 2019 and 2020 due to COVID. The event returned in 2021, now called Escape to the Cape since the destination changed to the Westin Resort in Cape Coral, Florida. In 2021, there were one hundred and fifty Gold Coast and other PCA members from six Regions converged at the Westin Resort. We all had a great time. Also, at the 2021 event, it was the first time a car show was held at the resort as part of the event. That Sunday morning, 62 cars were entered and judged. A raffle was held that raised four thousand dollars for a charity. The raffle also allowed members to win great prizes, such as two Porsche Experience Trips to Atlanta and two complete Porsche Golf Bags. So that’s the history. But what’s the goal? The intention of the Gold Coast Region Board of Directors is to turn this event into a multiple region event that people look forward two each year. The event might move to different resorts from year to year, but its identity is that it is a Gold Coast Regional event. If you are considering attending the Escape this year, you need to register quickly. We already have over two hundred people registered for this year’s event. If you want to be part of the fun, make sure to register soon.

Summer is here. That may be funny

to say, as we live in South Florida and experience an ideal climate year-round. In the Porsche world, summer also means Zonefest and Parade. I hope you will be attending one or both of these traditional gatherings of Porsche friends from across the region and the United States. As you are traveling to Porsche events, or even when creating your own Porsche magical tour, send us your story and photos so we can share them with our members. Speaking of tours, check out page 33 for a very special travel tour. Gold Coast members have been enjoying various social events as a result of our hard-working social team. We just held our first Annual Charity Golf Tournament at the Country Club of Coral Springs. It was a great success! The idea for this began at one of our planning meetings earlier this year. Events like this one are

the result of members stepping up and volunteering their ideas, time, and support. If you would like to get more involved, contact Christy Spangler, our social chair, at socials@goldcoastregion.org. The club is always looking for fresh ideas, volunteers, and member support. A big shout out to all of our sponsors who have always been there to support the club with their ads and events. We are able to provide a printed newsletter to our members with the revenue from their ads. Some regions only provide their newsletters every other month or quarterly. There are many regions that are unable to provide any printed newsletter to their members due to the cost of printing and mailing each newsletter, and these regions only publish electronic versions. As prices for almost everything has increased, the Kassette has made a small

increase to our ad costs. This is something that we try to limit, with our last increase having been about seven years ago. Our printer has also seen an increase in their costs and, starting with this issue, the Kassette printing costs have increased. We are committed to continuing to print on a monthly schedule. A step we are taking to keep our production cost in the black is to reduce our mailing circulation by five percent. To do this, we are presenting an option to our members to OPT-OUT of receiving a printed copy. Members who opt out will still be able to access the online electronic version of the Kassette. To opt-out, log in to https://pca.org, select MEMBERSHIP, MY PCA ACCOUNT, and MANAGE COMMUNICATIONS. Under PCA COMMUNICATIONS SETTINGS, select OPT-OUT OF PRINTED REGIONAL NEWSLETTERS. Thank you for your help.

Emails to… (Letters to the Editor)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hi Roger, Hope this finds you well! As always great job on the Kassette. I laugh when I think about what it was in the early 80’s. I took it over and we went to a glossy coated cover with artwork by Shelby Goode. You certainly have taken it well beyond that! Just a thought or suggestion as I read cover to cover on club activities. In welcoming new transfer members, would it be possible to have what region they are coming from? I have been unable to break the code of GSR, EGS, MNY without a lot of research. It is bad enough trying to figure out Roadrunner or Big Sky Region. Sending a shout-out for a job well done and recognized! All the Best, Ken Fengler (Ed: Thanks Ken. We will start providing the full region name instead of the abbreviation. And GSR = Gulfstream Region; EGS = Everglades Region, MNY = Metropolitan New York Region) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hey Porsche Brothers! (Originally sent to Ian Gerada, and forwarded to Roger Fabel, Editor) Please tell Roger Fabel what a great issue of Die Porsche Kassette he produced. It is definitely first class. I would have phoned him to tell him personally, but I didn’t see his phone number. When you are in touch with Pedro please tell him I said hello. He is an excellent mechanic with reasonable rates, and a treasure to the Porsche club. He did extensive work on my Boxster, and it ran like stink. Sincerely, Jim Guarino (Ed: Thanks Jim! We have a great team that continue to make improvements to the Kassette. We’ll pass along your well wishes and thanks to Pedro Bonilla. We totally agree!)
In my opinion our club not only represents amazing people but also amazing cars. I call it the club with “No Boring Cars!”. Whenever I attend one of our many events, I, like many others always try and get to the venue about half an hour early, why? Well as I have to explain to my wife all the time – I want to check out the cars and chat about them too 😊 it is a part of Gold Coast Region life that I really enjoy. I certainly hope you would to, next time you decide to go to a breakfast or an after hours social, try it – arrive about 30 mins early and see how many members are right there in the parking lot simply chatting about our cars.
Remember, if you’re the primary member, you can register a co-member. * Co-members are welcome to share in your PCA experience at no additional cost. Additionally, they’re invited to all PCA events and receive their own user account on www.PCA.org. *Co-members must be at least 18 years of age to register. Did You Know We have quite an active Facebook Group with just over 30 members , please join fellow members for discussions and
general Porsche chat by requesting to join the group at www.facebook.com/ groups/gcrgroup/ you will need your PCA membership number to join as this is a private group only open to PCA members, hope to see you online. Please take your time to follow our Instagram page where we will be featuring a lot of our event photos – you can follow us on Instagram by following goldcoastpca (https://www.instagram. com/goldcoastpca/) Drive safe,
Gold Coast Region Golf
We Tee It Up for Charity Contributions by Die Porsche Kassette Staff
On a Sunny Saturday morning in midMay, members and friends of the Gold Coast Region PCA held our first golf tournament. GCR players took to the Country Club of Coral Springs for a golf outing where all profits from the event went to Memorial Cancer Institute in Aventura, FL. GCR PCA member, Mike Del Pozo, organized the golf outing for the club following a suggestion at a club social committee meeting earlier in the year. Once the golf event was proposed it was off to the Porsche races so to speak. A committee was formed with Mike DP as chairman, a budget was approved, and plans moved along quickly. In keeping with our charitable giving history, it was recommended that proceeds from the event be donated to the Memorial Cancer Institute to honor Mrs. Laraine Olliviere, President Peter Olliviere’s late wife who had been treated for cancer at the Aventura facility. Nearly fifty golfers attacked the Coral Springs course for a great round of hitting and chasing a little white ball. The presenting sponsor was FRONT ROW THEATER. FRONT ROW is a south Florida company with over 15 years of experience installing home theaters and smart home equipment. Our Gold level sponsor was TUNERS, the independent Porsche service and repair shop on Wiles Road in Coral Springs. Besides supporting their Porsche service facility, they brought several Porsche vehicles for display at the entrance to the golf clubhouse. Impressive vehicles, each Porsche 911 highly desirable. Additional “Friends of the Tournament” Sponsors are Country Club of Coral Springs the host facility. DP Window Cleaning, Connectica, Davis Cigars 1276, The Vintage Ice Cream Guys, and Black Flamingo Brewery were in attendance with support for GCR and the
Memorial Cancer Institute. For those so inclined Davis Cigars had excellent cigars for many of the players, to chomp on throughout the day. The Vintage Ice Cream Guys offered all you could eat ice cream for the players as they came through the clubhouse turn. Perhaps the golfer favorite was the free beer! Black Flamingo Brewery brought two kegs of suds, ice cold, and quite consumable for those needing a bit of “swing oil”. As the day arrived, we had a few folks who signed up to play but had to back out for one reason or another. To a person each let their “contribution” registration fee ride. With open spots in the foursomes, ever thinking Chairman Del Pozo invited a total of six special guests. Four of the guys were US service veterans. They played as a group and did quite well for military folks. The additional two guests were also retired military, Commander Tom Melville, and Corpsman Tony Spina. Each are US Navy veterans of Vietnam era; both having served for our country. Tom was assigned to ship carrying rapidly deployed Marine, Navy and Navy Seals by boat and helicopter. Tony was a Navy corpsman assigned to a US Marine Recon group. And they could both play! Being the first golf outing event for GCR PCA it was not without a couple hiccups. Mike Del Pozo wandered through multiple challenges. Unfortunately, we did not draw as many golfers as anticipated. None of this deterred Mike’s team, the generous sponsors, nor the golfers. And it was a great event to build on for our next round. With the assistance of volunteers and sponsors each participant received a golf towel, swag bag, and a great lunch. It was great fun for our first effort at diging up turf while whacking golf balls. It was made great through the efforts of many, and the simple fact that the Memorial Cancer Institute will receive a nice contribution
| June 2022
in memory of Laraine Olliviere. The approximate amount to be presented is $6,000.00. Everyone in attendance won! But there were also real winners in the following categories: Longest Drive; Closest to the Pin; and Lowest Net Score. Ms. Christy Spangler, GCR PCA played with her parents, she also won in the closest to the pin contest for the gals. The big winner of the event was Steve Kidd who received the door prize offered by FRONT ROW THEATER. The prize, a top of the line 55” Sony OLED flat screen television. The FRONT ROW owner Chris Cotter was thankful and appreciative of the charity event. His business partner, Elliot Goldman, had lost his mother to cancer several years ago. They both greatly appreciated the Club’s efforts and advised Mike DP that they would be happy to support our golf event again next year. In review of the event, Mike and Leslie Del Pozo pointed out several key suggestions for our next event. First, you do not need to be a golfer to have fun with the group, just buy a lunch ticket and have fun with the players. Second, all golf skill levels are welcome, we are doing it for charity and a to enjoy the legendary Porsche camaraderie that exists beyond our cars. Third, the tournament is played as a scramble which means everyone hits and the best shot is selected to play from for the next stroke. All together, these relaxed rules give anyone a chance to enjoy the outdoors on manicured fairways and smooth greens. Did we mention all the proceeds went to beat cancer? You bet! Probably the biggest question leading up to the golf tournament, was not how many golfers, or what to wear, but: WILL MY CLUBS AND BAG FIT IN MY PORSCHE? If you ditch your right seat passenger, yes! It was truly a fun Saturday for GCR Porsche Peeps.
Racing to Be Social
at the Hagerty F1 Viewing Party Written by AJ Moffitt, Staff Writer
Andrew Moffitt, Event Photography
On Sunday, May 8th, not only did many members of the PCA Gold Coast Region celebrate their mothers, but they also took time out to celebrate the organized automotive race competition of some of the fastest cars – Formula One, also known as F1. The Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, has been the traditional American home for F1 racing since 2012, except for 2020, when COVID-19 caused a cancellation of the race. Beginning this year in 2022, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino held its inaugural race to start its 10-year deal with Formula One. Undoubtedly, members of PCA are among the most excited to have this race taking place so close to our backyards.
nonparticipants parked on the East. After parking, all attendees went into the Hagerty building, where Travis led three separate tours of the facility. With a building of 50,000 square feet that can withstand a category 5 storm, Hagerty is filling up quickly. Don’t worry, because they are working on enlarging the number of cars they can hold. “Currently, we have approximately 130 cars on the property,” explained Travis, “We’re excited that we have lifts ordered that will enable us to hold an inventory of about 190 to 200 vehicles.” Cars currently being housed
Because some tickets were pricey, it’s no wonder that many F1 fans opted to celebrate race day amongst their peers instead of at the Hard Rock. PCA arranged for a viewing party at Hagerty Garage + Social, located in Delray Beach, where 75 members and friends of the club were able to enjoy the race from the cool comfort of the facility. Hagerty Facility Manager Travis Hanna and his staff were accommodating and gracious at the event. They set up various comfortable seating areas throughout the building where people could mingle or view the race on one of the dozen-plus screens. Upon arrival at Hagerty, attendees signed in and were given checkered flag wristbands to allow them entry. Though checkered flags typically signify the end of a race, these wristbands were quite the opposite as they indicated the beginning of a great time. Those who registered for the car show lined up their Porches on the West side of the parking lot while
at Hagerty’s include an array of antique Dodges and Plymouths but also house Maclaren’s, Paganis, Ferraris, Rolls Royces, and Bentleys. But let’s not forget all of the beautiful Porsches! One Porsche, in particular, really stood out – the 1979 Porsche 928 from Risky Business that recently sold for $1.98 million at auction. Hagerty’s has some exciting news to share. Their newest facility, located at 355 NE 71st St. in Miami, FL, is opening this month! Now you’ll have multiple
locations to choose from for storing your precious automobiles and for their wide array of social gatherings. During the viewing party, Hagerty catered lunch with an assortment of scrumptious subs, fruits, and cheeses, and members were encouraged to go outside to vote for the People’s Choice award. First place went to Joseph “Joe” Solomito and his gorgeous, red 1967 912 with houndstooth seats. Hagerty’s graciously had him select a cap and a t-shirt as his prize for winning.
Another highlight of the day was the Peach Bellini’s that were provided to all female attendees as an ode to Mother’s Day. Let’s not forget to mention the raffle for a beautiful orchid that was won by Ann Marie, a guest of member Thurston King. Second place went to Patricia and Bob Walter for their 1990 944 S2, and third place was awarded to Steve and Dottie Kidd, who also were the hosts of the event, with their 1989 944 S2.
All told, it was a glorious day at a great facility, and PCA looks forward to additional events at Hagerty Garage + Social.
SHIFT INTO SOCIAL Christy Spangler, Social Chair Hello, summertime! It’s that time of year when things really heat up around our region (even more than they already have!) To beat the heat, we have our upcoming Afternoon at the Movies featuring Top Gun: Maverick at the Cinemark Theater in Davie on June 4th. We will have the theater to ourselves. What better way to stay cool and enjoy the anticipated summer blockbuster movie than with100 great friends? Happy Father’s Day to the Porsche Dads. You know who you are - the ones who not only play hard with your Porsches, but you take the time to baby and pamper them as well. I know some of you are using cloth baby diapers to polish your Porsche kids. Enjoy your day!
Also, this is the start of hurricane season. Be sure to have a plan in place to protect your home, family, and your Porsche! Thank you to Steve and Dottie Kidd for organizing the F1 Viewing Party at Hagerty Garage + Social on May 8th. There was a great turnout to watch this exciting event. The First PCA Gold Coast Region Charity Golf Tournament was held on May 14th at the Country Club of Coral Springs. Thank you to Mike Del Pozo for heading up the committee and to the committee members for all of your work to make this a success. You can read more about this great event in this issue. Registration is open for the Second
Annual Escape to the Cape on August 20th and 21st. The plans are coming together, and we know it’s going to be exciting. We recently held another social committee meeting and have some new events in the works, as well as some popular repeat events. Stay tuned for upcoming email announcements from Ian Gerada via “eNews.” You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at https:// www.goldcoastregion.org/calendar/ and on https://clubregistration.net/ for events and updates. If you are interested in volunteering or have an idea for something fun, contact me at socials@goldcoastregion.org.
FINDING GOLD His Dad Drove Race Cars Member Feature by Mark Johnson Walter “El Gordo” Sarmiento is a native of Bogota, Colombia. He arrived in the states in 1989 at the age of 27, but his love of Porsche and automobiles started much-much earlier.
safer since 1994. Basically, he is doing his part to keep our Florida roads safe for transport by all vehicles, but especially for our Porsches.
Walter’s father is an architect, who built half of the City of Bogota back in the day. He designed the tallest building in the downtown area among many others. Senior Sarmiento was also a race car driver. He would bring young Walter to the track to watch him race a VW with a Porsche engine. The engine was built by Walter’s dad by his own hand. Per Walter, “Gustavo Sarmiento can be described as a genius. He’s crazy, stubborn, a tremendous professional, and adorable human being! I don’t remember him much as a race car driver, as all I can remember is being in the back of an old white VW and seeing him pass by on occasion. It was similar to watching any race from a single vantage point, the cars travel past quickly - unless it is on TV. But the smell of fumes; oil, gas, smoke is what stays with me. To me he was one heck of a driver!” Walter also shares, “Today, it’s what gets me excited about my 930, the smelly old bastard” (the car not dad, ed.). El Gordo Sarmiento lives in the Embassy Lakes area of Cooper City. He is a CEI civil engineer by training (Construction, Engineering, Inspection) with the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). He has enjoyed an amazing career with FDOT rebuilding roads and bridges in Florida, and our great country. He has been part of renewing our infrastructure, making it more dependable, beautiful, and
18
Die Porsche Kassette
The 930 is Walter’s third Porsche. He’s also owned a red 1986 944 Turbo and a red 1988 928 S4 at the same time, of course wishing he still had both. They were moved to make space for the turbo. In addition to the 930 Turbo, Walter currently owns a ’82 C3 Chevy Corvette and an ’88 560 SL Mercedes Benz. The 930 Turbo is his “all time” favorite Porsche, and he is fortunate to have acquired it back in 2003 after owning the 928 and 944 among many other brands. These days there is consideration of adding to his Porsche fleet by acquiring a Boxster S and perhaps a Panamera. Depending on storage and or garage space, we suspect that the Corvette and Benz will be moved to new owners to make room for the PCar additions.
Walter Sarmiento on a jobsite, CEI civil engineer for FDOT. With regards to Porsche, Walter owns a 911 Turbo 930 in Charcoal Gray, the “widow maker” in Porsche parlance. This specific model 911 was given its less-than-ideal moniker owing to the vehicles’ propensity to snap-oversteer in certain cornering situations. He acquired this 930 in 2003 and has driven the Porsche continuously since.
As for modifications the 930 is equipped with a 3.4L with a larger turbo system and increased capacity intercooler. Interior wise there are quite a few additional mods which are generally too numerous to mention, but they work! Walter has had the vehicle serviced in a few locations around south Florida, to varying degrees of success. As a result, he has identified his personal favorite shops for key vehicle maintenance:
Posing with the 944 Turbo and 938 S4, both Guards Red in the early 00s.
| June 2022
Kevin Wheeler of KMW Motorsports in Boca Raton and a small independent shop owned by Max Strunc in Davie. Per Walter, they are both great guys and always ready to lend a hand on issues with his Porsche. Walter had driven several different vehicles up at Moroso – Palm Beach International Raceway (PBIR). In previous Driver Education type events at PBIR, he had driven a mercury Mekur XR4ti, and a BMW M3, both solid cars on the track. Then he took the 930 to the PBIR track. His previous seat time in the turbo had been confined to the streets. The Moroso track experience would be new. While not a problem so to speak, El Gordo Sarmiento was able to experience the throttle snap-oversteer that gave the 930 turbo models the nickname of “widow maker:! Flying down the back straight to the bottom turn, Walter experienced the snap-oversteer of the “widow maker” when starting to exit that bottom turn. He thinks he may have added a bit too much throttle – a touch too early - coming out of the turn and WHAM! North, East, West, South, Stalled! The car flipped around faster than a June bug in a tornado. Trembling, he started the vehicle, thanked the Lord he did not wreck the 930 as it would hurt both spiritually and financially, and decided to avoid the track with the car going forward. It was the last time he drove at PBIR with this Porsche, relegating the car to Thursday gatherings and Ruben’s Runs drives. It would be PCA runs for stone crab and other south Florida local Porsche rallies with his Porsche pals. Beyond the automobiles, Walter’s family life is not uncommon. Walter is divorced. He has a 22-year-old daughter, Daniela, who he has not seen in quite a long time, but he adores her. He is the oldest of four siblings with two younger brothers and his baby sister.
The 930 Turbo in the Keys during a recent Air-Cooled Breakfast Club run. Walter “El Gordo” (a childhood nickname from his youth as he was rather chubby at birth) Sarmiento believes that he has been blessed with an amazing life and finds himself very fortunate to be living in the USA, Florida, a grand and beautiful country. He feels welcomed and he is thankful for the opportunity to build a great life that includes knowing an Walter has been a PCA member since the exceptional group of friends he has made 944 was first acquired. However, there was a two- or three-year hiatus taken before through the Porsche community. rejoining Gold Coast a couple years ago. He has traveled to the Tampa area with PCA in the 928, a beautiful resort, with the trip so long ago the name of the facility remains elusive. Additional Walter “El Gordo” Sarmiento with Mom & Dad, Senora Liga trips include two Hernandez & Sr. Gustavo Sarmiento visits to Mount Very fortunately both Mom, Liga Hernandez, and Dad are still living and reside in Port St. Lucie. Walter thanks God for each of them and the lives that they have been given. His thankfulness and appreciation for life is evident in the smile that never seems to leave Walter’s face.
Dora in the 930 with GCR folks. Like many members he participates in social events such as the Second Thursday event at Beat Culture in Miami, and as many long-organized drives as time allows.
He is happy to be part of our group, our Porsche family. Walter, we are very happy you are part of PCA Gold Coast Region and our Porsche community of friends as well.
Alvaro Rodriguez, or Al as he is known to most, is the founder of DRT which began in Miami in 2015. DRT was initially known as Das Renn Treffen, which loosely translates to “the race speed” in the German language. So not to confuse folks with the PCA national event named “TREFFEN,” the event title was condensed to DRT. What began in 2015 as a one-day gathering has blossomed into a multiple day affair of four separate events. DRT 2022 started with a Track Day at Homestead Speedway on Thursday, March 31st. The weekend affair continued Saturday morning with Cars + Coffee which was followed by a Sunset Kickoff Party at Regatta Harbor Rooftop on Saturday evening, April 2nd. DRT concluded on Sunday, April 3rd with approximately 500 cars and thousands of people attending the Main Show at Regatta Park in Coconut Grove. How did we get here? Where did the idea for DRT begin? About 30 years ago, Al started his personal enjoyment with cars, Volkswagen Beetles to be exact. Sourcing parts and modifying them is how his passion germinated. After a few years, while attending an event in Manassas, Virginia, Al met Dan Jarvie of Peachtree,
Georgia. Dan offered to trade a Porsche of his in exchange for the VW Al was working on. Obtaining that Porsche from Dan provided the beginning of Al’s love for fast cars. Shortly after acquiring that first Porsche, Al began work in the graphics department at local Miami Porsche parts and accessories company. His employment there, and his easy access to parts, quickly enriched his passion for cars. Finding his automotive stride, he and friends started VolksBlast, a car show dedicated to Volkswagen. Sometime around 2012, a Porsche class was added to the VolksBlast show. VolksBlast last ran in 2020 (and should be back soon) but Al’s enthusiasm for car shows, especially with the Porsche marque, continued to move forward. DRT became “The Greatest Porsche Automobile Event in South Florida!” From humble beginnings as part of a VW event, the largest Porsche collaboration was born in South Miami. Each DRT event seems better than the last and that is the overarching goal, continuous improvement, and enjoyment. If Al could have one wish come to fruition, it would be to give back to the south Florida community. “For me,” Al explained,
| June 2022
“I’ve always wanted to give back to South Miami because that’s where the event started. I think we have to stay true to the beginnings of the event.” What else does Al think of the event that he created? “The cars represent a great inspiration and a great goal. I really enjoy to drive them and being around them amongst another enthusiasts is the second-best best feeling. That feeling is intoxicating. Getting people together and talking about the cars – whether it’s someone’s first Porsche or their tenth or even if they don’t own a Porsche – the common thread is the joy and excitement that Porsches bring to the people. Porsche, as a brand, is always pushing the boundaries. Not just from a mechanical perspective, but from a design perspective as well.” Along with his wife, Yordi Garcia, Al has quite a few legacy contributors and volunteers as well as sponsors and vendors which support DRT. Alvaro knows that DRT will be around for a long time to come, and yet he also knows that an event the size and scope of DRT wouldn’t be possible without the help of the community. “Thank you to all my clients and the people that have supported
me. Thanks to the people that respect what we do and have given me an opportunity to do this. It makes me want to keep pushing because I enjoy it so much, and I believe the community does as well. Thank you to the Porsche Club of America, especially the Gold Coast Region, because even though DRT isn’t a PCA event, they have always been so supportive. They understand how much it means for the people and how engaged their members are when they attend.” Gold Coast PCA member Steve Kidd has provided several bits of insight into the happenings of the DRT weekend. • Thursday March 31st: The Track Experience at Homestead racetrack! This could best be described as a DE, on steroids! The driving component offered track time for advanced, intermediate and a lead-follow group. We coordinated the lead-follow drivers and assembled an excellent group of instructors to assist. Many thanks to the instructors and spectacular group of well-behaved followers. Thursday at Homestead also featured car displays, VIP rides, and parade laps. Hungry attendees were able to chow down on some great food from the vendors in attendance. • Saturday April 2nd: Two individual events on this day. The first DRT event on Saturday was Cars and Coffee at a new location, Waterford Place in Miami. This was no ordinary cars/coffee. There were a spectacular group of pristine Porsches and more 992 GT3’s than have seen before in one location ever before in south Florida. This day was about socializing with fellow
Porsche owners while enjoying new and different foods and beverages. Special guests to the DRT Cars/Coffee were Kelly Telfer, (renowned Porsche artwork) and Sean Cridland (Author and photographer) Kelly had many pieces of his Porsche art available for viewing and sale. Sean was selling his latest book Brumos: An American Racing Icon. The second event of the day was held later that evening. Saturday night offered was exclusive cocktail party on the rooftop of the Regatta Club. The Regatta Club provided a spectacular location for the drinks of your choice and friendly conversation about the recent events and opportunities for the big show on Sunday. • Sunday April 3rd: Time for the main event! This year, DRT was moved to Regatta Park in Coconut Grove from the Schnebly Winery in Homestead (2021 location). Regatta Park in the Grove provided an incredible venue for the display and viewing of hundreds of spectacular Porsche vehicles. There were many rare and limited production Porsches, as well as custom builds and super clean show cars. Many vehicles were in a judged and people’s choice categories in addition to the many that were driven to the event as simple commuter transportation It was exceptionally diverse collection of Porsche. Show results and pictures will be available on the web site: DRT-SOFLA. COM. Additional photos taken by GCR PCA members are already posted at the club Facebook group page. Excellent food and beverage offerings were available at the main hospitality tent with the purchase
of a special wristband. A huge group of vendors were available to sell products and answer questions. • A Gold Coast Region hospitality tent was in this area and staffed by several volunteers of our club. At the GCR tent, we had several goals, which were: 1) Thanking PCA members for their support of their club and let them know about upcoming PCA events 2) Recruiting as many new and PCA Juniors as possible. 3) Identifying Porsche owners who are not yet PCA members and letting them know the benefits and fun of being a PCA member. 4) Offering water, snacks, publications, and other goodies. 5) Encouraging everyone to sign up for a chance to win a nice Porsche Basket that GCR provided. We estimated that well over 400 people stopped by the GCR tent to meet, converse, and contemplate PCA membership. What is next for DRT? Planning is starting now for the 2023 event, which will also be held in South Florida. With an expected crowd of thousands, there is no such thing as planning too early. As with a precisionbuilt Porsche flat-6, there are many finely machined moving parts, so the “5P’s” are most definitely being considered (Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance).
We know members of the Porsche Club of America feel the same. Ever moving forward, Al works with a plan of continuous improvement with 2023 DRT and beyond. Next years’ event is being organized for growth and expansion to bring additional attendees, more Porsche vehicles, and fresh faces. Alvaro wishes to expand the DRT net to include Porsche enthusiasts from outside of Florida and across the entire US, for a week of Porsche camaraderie in South Miami. DRT from humble VW roots to a world class event. It is all part of Alvaro’s plan!
Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair
Our region AX team hosted the 5th GCR AutoX of 2022 on April 30th at the Sebring race track skid pad. All I can say is we really lucked out with the weather. Rain was predicted, but never happened until after the event was finished and the equipment was packed away in our trailer. The prediction of rain scared away a lot of the seasoned AX veterans, however my hat off to all the newbies that showed, ran, and left with huge smiles on their faces. Of course this event (and all our autocrosses) would not be possible but for the volunteers that help wherever needed. Timing ran flawlessly thanks to Steve, James and Alejandro. Dottie handled scheduling assignments to make sure everyone got some dry runs, and as it turned out, everyone ended up with 8 dry runs on a course that averaged 50-60 seconds. Everyone should know the results are available on the GCR website, however as a sneak preview the fastest time of the day went to Oliver Licul, driving a well prepared Mazda Miata on race tires. GCR allows not just Porsches, but other makes and models. Case in point, see the pictures on the next page that show the oldest car (Steve’s’ 1989 944) and the newest vehicle (Nick’s 2022 Ford Explorer SUV). For those that are wondering, the Porsche family of SUV’s, primarily the Cayenne and Macan, handle remarkably well on an autocross course, and I urge the owners of these Porsche’s to see for yourself how good these suv’s handle. While on the subject of AX cars, the oldest car to participate, the 1989 944, is part of a generation of Porsches that were very popular AutoX vehicles 30 years ago. Today
the most popular Auto X Porsches seem to be the Boxster/Cayman series, which represented a big percent of the Porsches participating in the April AutoX. Just look a the photos for a few of the Boxsters and Caymans participating. On a final note is a picture of Katarina, with her husband Christian. Katarina was presented with a special (of sorts) award for hitting the most cones in 1 run. How many you ask???? The total was 7 cones, most of which were collected in the circular “skid pad’ section of the course. The shirt has a picture of a cone and says “NOT GOOD”. Putting this into perspective, each hit cone carries a 2 second penalty, so Katarina racked up a total of 14 penalty seconds in just 1 run. Katarina accepted the shirt enthusiastically (all smiles I might add) and vowed to be back, but not hit so many pylons I need to repeat an important message. To continue offering a world class AX program, we need a new site. This could be a BIG parking lot, air strip or similar piece of pavement in the TriCounty area to hold our AutoX events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues, and school/government parking facilities, which have no parking bumpers and are reasonably priced. What we need is an “in”.Someone that has a connection to a suitable property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of such a site? Are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954- 292-3915 if you can help finding a new AX site.
Tentative AX schedule for the remainder of 2022 Event #6 9/10/2022 @ Sebring in conjunction with the Sun coast region DE. Thanks again to our friends at Suncoast for the site Event #7 October or November. Location TBA possibly FAU, PBIR or with another PCA region. Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change due to weather, availability and factors beyond our control. 2022 updates: Everyone is now required to preregister & pre pay for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net… Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. A new helmet rental program will be instituted starting with the April 30th AX. We will be utilizing new/newer Snell approved helmets available for a $20.00 per person charge per event. Helmet reservation/ payment will be available as an event option on Club registration. Please bring a helmet sock, and be prepared to leave your drivers license as a deposit. Your license will be returned when you return the helmet No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. For 2022 please remember to be Covid-19 conscious. This means appropriate safety protocols will be enforced. General Questions? call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196....AX rule questions call Steve 954 292-3915
Are They Really Better? Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
You hear it all the time: “EVs (Electric Vehicles) are significantly better for the environment because they produce zero emissions compared to conventional ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicles and make a lasting positive impact on our planet.” But are they really better? As an engineer, I need to analyze the pros and cons to make a determination. Join me in this search and analysis. Since it’s been globally decided that all cars are bad, this is the new thinking about our future: The best carrelated innovation we have is not to improve the car but eliminate the need to drive it everywhere we go. That’s the mantra. Cars are our modern-day dinosaurs and are soon to be extinct. If you have a nice ICE machine, hold on to it! Let’s analyze: EV PRO - You can save a lot of money. This is a false claim, in my opinion, and here’s why: An electric vehicle uses electricity to charge its batteries and power its electric motor(s). A conservative rule of thumb is that an EV gets 3.5 miles per kWh. The US average cost of a kWh is $0.13. So, driving 10,000 miles per year will need 2,857 kWh, which at $0.13 each will come out to $372 in kWh/year. Driving a 30 mpg ICE vehicle 10,000 miles per year at $4.00/gallon will cost $1,333 in fuel/year. The EV owner gets a savings here of $961/year. Also, the EV owner will save an average of $400/year in maintenance versus the ICE vehicle since EVs do not need oil changes and have far fewer parts than ICE vehicles. But look closely at the actual cost of the vehicles (ICE vs. EV): The ICE version of the 2021 Toyota Rav4, with options comparable to the Rav4EV, is $27,800. The 2021 Rav4EV starts at $49,800 – but for this vehicle, you need to add $1,300 for the LII home charging station and the installation cost of $1,500. So the Rav4EV cost actually comes to $52,600. The difference is $24,800 in favor of the ICE vehicle (and that difference exists with all brands offering both versions of a particular model.) There are tax incentives that you get if you pay cash for the vehicle. Let’s say you do pay cash deduct these incentives from the cost: $52,600 - $7,500 = $45,100. That’s still a difference of $17,300 in favor of ICE.
26
Die Porsche Kassette
| June 2022
Looking at the annual cost of ownership (fuel/electricity and maintenance): Rav4 (ICE): $1,333 (fuel) + $400 (maintenance) = $1,733. Rav4 (EV): $372 (electricity) + $0.00 (maintenance) = $372. The difference is $1361. In order to break even, you would have to keep the car for almost 13 years ($17,300/year divided by $1,733 = 12.71 years). This doesn’t even take into account insurance costs for the EV which are higher than the ICE version simply because of the replacement value of the car. The counter is: But they are way better for the environment! Are they? Really? The 1,000-pound batteries that power EVs have a life of 10 years. What happens after those 10 years? They must be replaced – and they won’t be recycled! The only reason batteries are recycled today is because of the cobalt content. But as batteries convert to non-cobalt content, such as lithium, recycling becomes more expensive than mining, and dumpsites will be a more economical way to dispose of them. Imagine when millions and millions of batteries run their life and are not recycled. Where do they go? Can you say toxic waste dump? Is this better for the environment?
But even worse is the fact that this technology is being touted as renewable energy when in reality, no energy system is actually renewable since all machines require continual mining and processing of primary materials and the disposal of hardware that eventually wears out.
A 1,000-pound lithium EV battery, for example, contains 25 pounds of lithium, 30 pounds of cobalt, 60 pounds of nickel, 110 pounds of graphite, 90 pounds of copper, and another 400 pounds of steel, aluminum, and various plastic components. To obtain those quantities of ores, 500,000 pounds of the earth must be extracted and processed. Averaged over a battery’s life, each mile of driving an EV consumes five (5) pounds of earth. Using an ICE vehicle consumes 0.2 pounds of liquids per mile. Here’s a picture of just one of those open mines to extract rare earth and other necessary materials for EV batteries.
I really do not see the benefit of EVs at all. To me, a much more logical approach to a greener mode of transportation is the Hydrogen-Powered Vehicle. It’s basically a standard vehicle as we know it, which consumes hydrogen (abundant in nature) and produces water vapor as a by-product. There are several auto manufacturers that have taken a hard second look at hydrogen. I hope cooler heads prevail for our own collective good. Some of the other pros of EVs are super acceleration due to instant torque and low noise from the power plant, although a lot more EV owners complain of higher levels of road and tire noise in their cabins. I think these are offset by the cons, such as long battery charging time, relatively short autonomy, difficulty in finding charging stations, higher costs, and the list goes on. Many of these issues will probably get better as time goes by and technology improves, but still, to me, it’s a no-go. Personally, I don’t ever foresee purchasing an EV (and I have driven quite a few, including the Taycan Turbo S, which is an outstanding piece of machinery). I am conscious of our environment and really believe that EVs are the bad choice here. At least I’ll be able to drive my old 1998 Boxster even when fossil fuels become outlawed or impossible to buy because of their cost. If you read one of my previous articles, Porsche will be producing their E-Gas (synthetic fuel) that affords old ICE vehicles extremely low levels of pollution, comparable to the net produced by EVs. We can all do our part to help the environment for future generations, so think this one through before you decide to go all-in.
