President’s Corner As I write this President’s Corner for June, I am feeling surprisingly good. It seems that the region is coming back to life. activities are ramping up; participation is increasing and seems to be an air that people want to get back to having fun. As more and more members received the Vaccine, many feel safer safer in attending events, thus the increase in turnout. Along with that good news, there are signs that caution is still necessary. We need to continue following the guidelines that have been set out relating to Social Distancing and keeping yourself and others safe from Covid. Looking at events that you should take note of for August. “GOLD COAST REGION ESCAPE, TO THE CAPE” which will be August 21st and 22nd, at the Westin Cape Coral Resort at Marina Village in Cape Coral Florida. Your Board of Directors along with the Social Committees try to make these events new and fresh so that you always have a good reason to attend. In this case, the location is new and considered one of the best resorts in Florida. The Westin organization is bending over backwards to ensure that our members have a great time. On the drive over on Saturday, we will be stopping at the open air and on the water Tiki Bar & Grill in Ft. Myers for lunch, At the Resort for dinner, we will enjoy a Prime Rib Surf and Turf meal at the hotel Waterfront Bar & Bistro. As you can see, this is going to be an event that you do not want to miss! For members who remember our Conchy Joe Drives to Jensen Beach, and Sanibel Island runs, you know how great these events were. Be aware that the events sell out fast. For the first time we are making it a inter region event where we will be seeing and socializing with our friends from other regions, so if you want to attend, do not delay, sign up as quickly as possible, because once the event is filled up registration will be closed, and you will have missed your chance. One last point, all the region’s events are coming back strong; Drivers Education, Auto Cross, Socials, Touring, all arears are doing well except for Concours. To correct that we will have a Wash & Shine Car Show Saturday evening with awards given out at dinner.
As most members know, we use Clubregistration to register people at all our events, I have been asked why we need to go through the added complication for local or smaller events. The answer is simple, we have been directed that everyone attending any PCA event must sign a Covert Wavier. In the past we have tried to have this documentation done on the day of the event, but this only led to confusion and unsigned waivers. Using clubregistration makes sure that these documents are signed, and we are within PCA insurance guidelines. In addition, all affiliate members attending an event, (Wives, Kids, or Significant Others) must also sign the Waiver using clubregistration keeps track of this process.
Peter Olliviere, President
In order to better serve the membership and to avoid confusion about Club Event Badges we have simplified the process for getting these name badges. New badges can be ordered through the website badges are available on the Gold the Gold Coast web site. If you should need a new badge just place your order, there. By the time you read this we will be halfway through the year, and it is time to start thinking about the Gold Coast Holiday Party. My question is what type of event you would like to have.? Please send me an email at polliviere@gmail.com.

Editor’s Notes
As this month’s cover shows, Gold Coast is starting to get back on track. The cover photograph was taken by staff photographer Alejo Menendez at our Sebring autocross. As you read this issue another autocross will have occurred at Sebring, attended by Suncoast and Gold Coast region PCA members. Attendance is increasing and our regions partner well to provide a great autocross event for our members who are ready to get back to the track. More events are planned for 2021 so keep tuned for upcoming dates in our monthly “Autocross Update.” The DE team has a Drivers’ Education event planned for October 2 and 3 at PBIR. The Gold Coast DE events are very limited so sign up as soon as the registration flyer is released. Not all of our events are at an autocross track or a race track like PBIR, Sebring, or Homestead. Turn to page 10 and see our first Poker Rally. The event was planned by Steve and Dottie Kidd after the Boca Parade. As you can see our members were ready to get back to our normal Porsche
Roger Fabel, Editor
lifestyle and this event was a home run. Registration was limited to 52 teams so sign up early for next year’s event and don’t miss out on the fun. I would also like to thank our loyal sponsors who advertise in the Kassette and are always there to support the club by opening their shops and providing us with Porsche-style hospitality. Another annual event that was put on hold last year is our drive to the west coast organized by director Rick Veingrad. This year the event flyer is on page 14. “Escape to the Cape” will take us to a new location on the west coast. The event is very popular with our members so come join the group and be prepared for a fantastic weekend in Cape Coral. Staff writer Mark Johnson has created a new section in the Kassette to interview members both seasoned and new. This month’s “Member Profile” is on page 15. Mark has taken an old section, the “Members Spotlight,” that we ran years ago to a much higher level. We have over 3000
members so we hope this new section will help you to meet your fellow PCA members. One of the challenges to produce the Kassette is content. Not everyone is a writer so my in-basket is not always full of articles each month. I am blessed to have some talented staff writers and photographers and a few chairs that provide great material. Our president, Peter Olliviere, who provides an informative “President’s Corner” each month has a passion about his cars and has written another article to follow last month’s “Confessions of a 4-Cylinder Junkie.” A special thanks to our tech writer, Pedro Bonilla, who has moved to the Suncoast region, for continuing to provide a fantastic tech article each month. Articles from you our members, are always welcome. Enjoy getting back on the PCA track.

First-ever GCR Mystery Poker Rally by Steve and Dottie Kidd
As PCA events start gradually coming online again, we decided to try something new and exciting for our region. What we “gambled” on was a fun, family-oriented driving event with an element of surprise and visits to some of our Kassette advertisers in the target area as well as a finish at a really cool location. The idea of a Mystery Poker Rally was conceived and after several months of planning resulted in putting a “winning hand” together. We had been contacted by Hagerty Garage and Social which recently opened its third location in Delray Beach, Florida, continuing its mission to offer collector car owners a place where they not only can store their cars but also work on them and hang out with fellow like-minded collectors. Mike Britton and his team at Hagerty Garage and Social offered to sponsor the final stop with refreshments, facility tours, and a great place to socialize and recognize the various winners as well as award some door prizes. So, you are probably wondering, what was the Mystery???? Well, that proved to be one of the best-kept secrets and here is how it worked. There are 52 cards in a deck, so registration was limited to 52 teams. A team consisted of a driver, navigator, and their Porsche. Registration filled up quickly and unfortunately, we could not accommodate everyone on the waiting list. Once registration was closed, we sent information on the starting location to the “lucky” participants, as well as an outline of what to expect. The plan was to have five stops where participants would receive a poker card at each location. In addition to a playing card, participants would later receive the mystery address of the next stop shortly before
departure time. Thus, a card at the starting point, one at each of the three intermediate stops, as well as a final card at the finish location, Hagerty Garage and Social. Teams were requested to use the GPS feature on their phones for directions to each mystery location. The three intermediate stops were Kassette advertisers in our target area that were excited to help and provide facilities, shop tours, and goodies.

Again, we could not have pulled this event off without these three long time advertisers and their support to make this event happen and keep it a mystery. A sincere thank-you for this and all you do for the club. Once everyone reached the final destination, Stop # 5 Hagerty Garage and Social The event kicked into overdrive at the new Hagerty Garage and Social. Participants were treated to beverages of all types with hors d’oeuvres and tours of the facility. Additionally, we had a special activity for our PCA Juniors in attendance. Five Gold Coast members with older and unique cars were asked to bring their Porsches inside the facility and the Juniors, with the help of Joaquin Samper, were asked to pick their favorite. Listed below are these Porches and their owners:

Thanks again to all five members for sharing their special Porsches with the group, and to our PCA Juniors for making this difficult selection and learning a thing or two about these cars you rarely see on the road. In case you are wondering, the winning poker hand was dealt to team #116, Mario and Lissette Gonzalez, who
profess to have never played poker before. Both Mario, the driver, and Lissette, the navigator. were awarded trophies. Additionally, we offered door prizes and had our Juniors draw numbers. Door prizes included oil change certificates provided by Foreign Affairs Motorsports, shirts, hats and wine glasses from Club Race, and an autographed poetry book recently written and published by one of our members, Dr. Marlene. A very special thanks to all the volunteers who served as card dealers, parking assistants, starters and helpers: everyone knows who you are and appreciates your volunteer contributions. We received many compliments about this event and requests that this event become an annual activity. Do you feel lucky???

Tech Corner : Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
The Vehicle Identification Number is a unique digital identification for motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds. As we know it today, the VIN is a 17- character identifier which does not include the letters O (o), I (i) or Q (q) to avoid confusion with the numerals 0, 1 and 9. It is generally printed or embossed on a small metal plate on the driver’s side of the dashboard, visible when looking through the windshield from the outside.
VIN Starting from the left: Character 1: Country of manufacture Characters 2 and 3: Manufacturing company Characters 4 -8: Type and size of engine Character 9: Manufacturer’s security code Character 10: Model year Character 11: Manufacturing plant Characters 12 – 17: Vehicle’s serial number Following you can see the two standards (EU and USA) for comparison: Standard
ISO 3779
European Union[7] more than 500 vehicles/year
European Union[7] 500 or fewer vehicles/year
North America more than 2,000 vehicles/year
North America 2,000 or fewer vehicles/year
INSERT: VIN.jpg HERE This is my car’s VIN behind the very pitted 300,000 mile OEM windshield.
The first official VIN appeared in 1954. At that time, the US government requested that automobile manufacturers and the Automobile Manufacturer’s Association develop a new standardized identifying numbering system, which was called the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Up to that time vehicles had been registered according to their engine’s number, but it quickly became apparent that a new system was required because of the common practice of engine replacement. The standardization of the modern VIN started in 1981 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The standard was changed several times since then and now, modern VINs are based on two related standards, originally issued by the International Standardization Organization (ISO) in 1979 (ISO 3779) in 1980 (ISO 3780). Compatible but different implementation of these ISO Standards have been adopted by the United States and the European Union. The VIN is not just a random string of alphanumeric characters. Each digit or group of digits refers to something specific about the vehicle’s manufacturing or design.

Summer Greetings Christy Spangler, Director
Greetings GCR Members - can you believe we are already at the half way mark of 2021? This month we welcome the summer season and our GCR calendar is quickly filling up. It is early May at the time of this writing and we had a great turnout at the May Porsches & Pancakes in the Davie location. It is great to see everyone again. I volunteered and attended the Mystery Poker Run and that was a lot of fun. There is also a birthday party parade that is being planned and an autocross in Sebring coming up. Later this year we have the Escape to the Cape (Coral) and the October trip to northern Georgia. Just a reminder of the regularly scheduled GCR events - the first Saturday Porsches and Pancakes and the third Thursday happy hours. If you a not comfortable with attending one of these in person, consider attending the first Thursday Virtual Drinks via Zoom hosted by Ian Gerada. Stay tuned to the enews email blasts for these and other events that are added to the schedule. This organization is about the members and I would like to hear from you- thoughts, ideas, concerns you can email me at christyspangler@yahoo.com. I also encourage you to volunteer for events and attend the board/membership meetings or watch them via the GCR Facebook group to see what is going on in the club. Hope to see you at an upcoming event soon. Stay safe, stay healthy.

Photo of the Month
Industrial Hideout
by Christy Spangler, photo of the month chair
This month’s photo was submitted by Russell Montgomerie of his 2014 911 Carrera taken by his son, Spencer. Spencer thought this garage in the Mizner Park area would be a an edgy industrial backdrop for his Dad’s car. Russell’s 911 Carrera is a base model with manual transmission and 28,000 miles. In this photo, the sleek design of this 911 really contrasts with the texture of the garage backdrop. It gives an impression that the 911 is in a hideout waiting for the father & son duo to hit the road for the next great adventure. Spencer used his iPhone 11 to take this image.
I really appreciate all the great submissions - please keep them coming! How to submit a photo for consideration: Submission deadline is the 20th of each month. Please include the following information: name phone number information about your car the title for the photo a short write up about the photo what kind of camera or smart phone you used to capture the image Email the above information with your high resolution image attached to gcr.potm@gmail.com

The Grass is Always Greener
by Peter Olliviere, President Last month we republished my short story “Confessions of a 4 Cylinder Junky” in which I articulated my undying love and affection for 4 Cylinder Porsches. It surprises me that, that article was written 6 years ago. Where does the time go; More important is, what happened during that time and have things changed or remained the same. Well, it is no surprise that things have changed quite a bit. The first change was that I added a 1987- 928 S4 to my garage alongside the 968, (Four cylinders to eight, a five liter eight to be exact.) I now had two Transaxle Porsches and I loved both equally. I learned during this time with both cars that the 968 was basically a simple car, and that the 928 was not. The 928 was a complex beast that had received all the technology that was current for that time, but now was several decades old and presented its own set of owner’s issues. The first question anyone reading this should ask is why, I thought you were addicted to the 968 your drug of choice? Well, the answer is simple. The 928 is a beautiful car, far ahead of its competitors, when looked at as a styling exercise, and I loved to look at it. When a black one became available, I could not resist, I had to have it. Now understand I had not abandoned the 968 I just advanced its cause. The 968 engine is the 928 V8 cut in half. It has the same rear mounted gearbox the same long hood short deck styling, just more of it, a lot more. Best of all was now I could inject my drug of choice into both arms. When I purchased the 928, I do not think I realized, just what I was getting into restoring that car to a competitive concours standard was a major project. Over a period of 5 years, the car brought to a standard that allowed it to win its class in several PCA concourse events and a best in show at the Gold Coast Porches by the Bay Concours. Money and time are all you need to create a winner. Around this time, I realized that I was not using the 968, when I wanted to take a Porsche somewhere it was usually the 928. Why? I don’t know; I do know that through both cars were a joy to drive, I spent most of my time in the 928. This of course was detrimental to the 968. Not using a car especially one that is over 20 years old is a sure-fire way to have various systems in that car deteriorate, and you find yourself constantly chasing problems. When the opportunity presented itself to sell the 968 to a good home, I took it, and for the next several years concentrated on the 928. But once again the fun began to run out, you cannot use a showpiece as a daily driver. You do not want to drive it in the rain, you don’t want to park it any were, you basically are a slave to your car, and I was a slave to my much loved 928. It seems that when an idea sets in your mind sooner or later you will act on it, and

that is what happened to me. I found my self looking at Boxster’s and thinking about selling the 928, when out of the clear blue I got an offer to buy the 928. No suspense here, two weeks later a Guards Red 2014 Boxster S PDK was in my garage. The story should end there, the 4 Cylinder Junky finally overdosed and went to six-cylinder heaven with its greener grass but no, the Junkie’s Porsche story is just beginning. The showing is nice, the cleaning and care is OK, and the driving is superb. Next month we will compare the Transaxle Cars to the 4 generation of Boxster’s that came after and how they stand up to the challenge of being the entry level Porsche for a whole new generations of Porsche lovers. We will also talk about why these entry level Porches are really the best bang for the buck in the Porsche family of cars.
Wheelin’ & Deelin’ at the GCR Poker Rally by Christy Spangler, GCR Director I had a great time volunteering at the Mystery Poker Rally held on May 8th. I volunteered at the last stop, the Hagerty Garage and Social building, not only did I get to deal cards, I also had my 1985 944 on display with some other really nice Porsches for the PCA Juniors judging activity. At the first stop, the volunteers got the poker players checked in, and assigned the team numbers. The poker players then lined up in groups to get the address to the next stop. The volunteers were in the advance group so we could get to each stop ahead of everyone to get set up to greet, deal the cards and check in the poker players. After the cards were dealt, there was time to mingle and talk to the sponsors of each stop. Each sponsor was very gracious in opening their facilities for us to wander around and look at some cool cars and learn more about what they do. Once the next address was handed out, my navigator, Phil, took care of the GPS part on his phone and off we went to the next stop. It was a surprise each time of where we would end up which is what made this event so much fun. The entire drive was under 60 miles - a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Phil, and I got the final stop early to get the 944 situated in the Hagerty Garage and Social building - then off to the check in area where Phil stood at the entrance to welcome the poker players and I dealt the cards. Once everyone was checked in, Phil and I joined the group, toured the facility and enjoyed some cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres. It was nice to meet members and visit with members that I had not seen in a while. As for my team’s poker hand - well, we had nothing worth reporting on that. I would like to say thank you to the sponsors who were all very gracious: MGM Motorsports, Foreign Affairs Motorwerks, KMW Motorsports and Hagerty Garage and Social. Thank you to the members who also had their cars on display: Brandon Roth, Bjoern Marek, Steve Bamdas, Terry Cohen. I would like to thank the PCA Juniors who participated in the judging activity, and by the way, they are very tough judges: Agustin, Anthony, Dominick, Grace, Sacha and Timmy. Cheers to my fellow volunteers: Chris Apone and Lila, Pam & Howard Behar, Dominick & Heather DiGangi, Charles & Ana Foschini, Edwin Lorse, Noemi & Nester Sanchez, Phil Randall, Lee Walton & Carolynn Ditrichs, Adam Weiss & Joaquin Samper. Thank you to all the poker players who came out to the event - it was nice to see such a great turnout. Finally, a big thank you to Steve and Dottie Kidd who organized and put on this fantastic event! I encourage you to volunteer and help out at an event. It is a lot of fun and it is a good way to get to know other members. If you attended an event that you enjoyed, consider submitting an article about it to the Kassette.

Autocross Update
Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair

any of you who follow GCR’s AutoX program are as disappointed as I was about having to cancel our April AX at BBT. We had patiently waited over 2 years for a return, networking every few months and hoping for break. We were able to navigate thru several obstacles including a significant price increase. However, one challenge that could not be overcome was BBT’s revision to the contract that provided for a security deposit equal to the lot rental and unilateral call as to damage with no cap for things as minor as skid marks. We left with a positive outlook that hopefully things might revert to the contract we used for many years. This brings us back to the quest of finding 1 or 2 reasonably priced, centrally located AutoX sites. We have several new leads provided by members and hoping that at least one pans out. Good news for our Miami members....one site is in Central Dade and the other in North Dade. Please keep the site referrals coming and always provide a point of contact and hopefully an IN to someone who is understanding of what we do. In the mean time, we still partner with Suncoast Region when they do DE’s at Sebring and hope to again utilize FAU when the site is no longer utilized as a COVID testing location. Another timely AutoX topic is the Autocross at this year’s parade in French Lick, Indiana. As some of you know, this is the Super Bowl of Porsche club autocross, where in past years the best of the best compete for great trophies and bragging rights. The Stock Classes seem to have the most entries, while the fastest times are in the improved and modified classes. The Parade AutoX will again be held at the French Lick airport and promises to be easier to navigate than the last AutoX at French Lick in 2015. If you plan to go to Parade in 2021 and want more info on the AutoX, please feel free to give me a call and hopefully I’ll be able to answer your questions. If you are going to parade, please make sure you class your car correctly as protests are quite common. Even if you make an honest mistake, a protest could strip you of a potential trophy if it is upheld. When you check in/register on the 1st day of parade, please feel free to ask the autoX folks for help as this will be the last opportunity to make a class change. Also you will be encouraged to visit the AX site on Tuesday before the competition starts for a guided course walk.. Another thing about Parade AutoX... Make sure your car is in tip top condition because the tech inspection is very thorough...but don’t worry. They give you a copy of what they will be looking at in advance so you can properly prepare your car. Last time PCA had a Parade it was the 2019 Parade in Boca Raton. GCR did quite well in the AutoX and took home lots of trophies, including Fastest Time of the Day (FTD), by our very own Rad Delgado in his modified GT3RS. This is not the 1st time a GCR member has grabbed Men’s or Ladies FTD at a Porsche Parade, and certainly not the 1st time GCR has taken a good number of AutoX trophies. If a miracle were to happen, we would love to have an AutoX in late June at an airport like Buckingham to help prepare for the parade, however the likelihood of that happening is remote. Tentative AX schedule for the remainder of 2021 AX school for 1st time autocrossers May 22 . Event #3 5/22/2021 @Sebring: Very similar to event #1. Summer break Event #4 9/11/2021 @ Sebring or ??? Event #5 10/09/2021 @ Sebring or ??? Event #6 Tentative Mid November. Location TBA Event #7 Tentative early December possibly FAU or ??? Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change due to weather, availability and factors beyond our control. News, reminders and 2021 updates: Everyone is now required to pre-register for any AutoX on Clubregistration.net. Please consult the GCR website and Kassette for all Autocross photos & results. Porsche classes are loosely based on the PCR’s for medium size regions, with minor regional adjustments. The major difference will be the addition of SN (stock car/novice driver) for men and ladies. These classes are strictly for newcomers only. Please see Steve for any car class questions or if you wish to run as a novice. We reserve the right to make additional class/rule changes as needed. Our 2021 series is planned to be 5-7 events, depending on site eligibility. To be eligible for an end of the year award, competitors must run in over half the events in the same class. Each competitor’s top finishes will be calculated and an end of the year class champion and possibly runner-up (depending on class size) will be chosen. In case of a tie, additional events will be added until the tie is broken. Year-end class champion awards may be presented. No passengers except for an approved AX instructor driving or in the car instructing. Again, please remember to be Covid-19 conscious ie, waivers, social distancing, masks and sanitizing, etc. Questions? call Steve or Dottie Kidd 954-946-3196
