Wheelin’ & Deelin’ at the GCR Poker Rally by Christy Spangler, GCR Director I had a great time volunteering at the Mystery Poker Rally held on May 8th. I volunteered at the last stop, the Hagerty Garage and Social building, not only did I get to deal cards, I also had my 1985 944 on display with some other really nice Porsches for the PCA Juniors judging activity. At the first stop, the volunteers got the poker players checked in, and assigned the team numbers. The poker players then lined up in groups to get the address to the next stop. The volunteers were in the advance group so we could get to each stop ahead of everyone to get set up to greet, deal the cards and check in the poker players. After the cards were dealt, there was time to mingle and talk to the sponsors of each stop. Each sponsor was very gracious in opening their facilities for us to wander around and look at some cool cars and learn more about what they do. Once the next address was handed out, my navigator, Phil, took care of the GPS part on his phone and off we went to the next stop. It was a surprise each time of where we would end up which is what made this event so much fun. The entire drive was under 60 miles - a nice way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Phil, and I got the final stop early to get the 944 situated in the Hagerty Garage and Social building - then off to the check in area where Phil stood at the entrance to welcome the poker players and I dealt the cards. Once everyone was checked in, Phil and I joined the group, toured the facility and enjoyed some cocktails and hors d’ oeuvres. It was nice to meet members and visit with members that I had not seen in a while. As for my team’s poker hand - well, we had nothing worth reporting on that. I would like to say thank you to the sponsors who were all very gracious: MGM Motorsports, Foreign Affairs Motorwerks, KMW Motorsports and Hagerty Garage and Social. Thank you to the members who also had their cars on display: Brandon Roth, Bjoern Marek, Steve Bamdas, Terry Cohen. I would like to thank the PCA Juniors who participated in the judging activity, and by the way, they are very tough judges: Agustin, Anthony, Dominick, Grace, Sacha and Timmy. Cheers to my fellow volunteers: Chris Apone and Lila, Pam & Howard Behar, Dominick & Heather DiGangi, Charles & Ana Foschini, Edwin Lorse, Noemi & Nester Sanchez, Phil Randall, Lee Walton & Carolynn Ditrichs, Adam Weiss & Joaquin Samper. Thank you to all the poker players who came out to the event - it was nice to see such a great turnout. Finally, a big thank you to Steve and Dottie Kidd who organized and put on this fantastic event! I encourage you to volunteer and help out at an event. It is a lot of fun and it is a good way to get to know other members. If you attended an event that you enjoyed, consider submitting an article about it to the Kassette.
