Peter Olliviere, President
Help Wanted Ad WANTED Drivers Education Chairperson. PCA Membership is required. Knowledge of PCA Drivers Education procedure. Must be organized and have a high tolerance for pain. The chosen candidate will have participated in PCA Driver Education events and have obtained a level of driving proficiency as recognized by the PCA. Compensation for this position is competitive with other PCA regions. (Zero, Volunteer Position.) Please contact Peter Olliviere at President@ goldcoastregion.org. All kidding aside, we are in need of someone to head up the Gold Coast Region Drivers Education Program (DE). This program manages the club’s on-track driving events that are held at Homestead Raceway, Sebring Raceway, and Palm
Beach International Raceway. PCA is built around three basic disciplines that allow members to enjoy their cars in three distinct ways - Social, Concours, and Drivers Education. Due to the pressures of raising a family, our current DE director had to give up the position he has held for several years, leading to our need to find a replacement. The successful candidate for this position would be responsible for scheduling and managing two DE events a year. This would include negotiating track rentals and securing volunteers to work the track on the days of the events. This position also entails working with the other committee chairs in terms of safety, insurance, budgeting, advertising, and working with the other regions to secure the participation of their members. If you are interested or know of someone that could fill the position, please contact me at my email address.
Are you prepared to ESCAPE? The Escape to the Cape event, scheduled in 2022 on August 20th and 21st, is open on Club Registration. Those of you who missed this fantastic event last year now have a chance to join the fun. Last year was a knockout success, and everyone who attended enjoyed it. But that was last year. This year will be an even better event. You need to sign up for this before it fills up!

This will be a fun and worthwhile event, with proceeds going to the Memorial Cancer Institute. If you don’t play golf, you can still participate in the fun by signing up for lunch. Zonefest hosted by Suncoast Region, Memorial Day weekend, Melbourne Lots of events are planned, including a Concours, autocross, a day at Mark Pieloch’s American Muscle Car Museum, and dine and drives. GCR Afternoon at the Movies presenting Top Gun: Maverick, June 4th,
Cinemark Theater off I-75 and Sheridan Street - We will have the theater all to ourselves for a private viewing. Space is limited to 100 participants. Second Annual Escape to the Cape, August 20th, Cape Coral - You thought last year was fun? Just wait until you see what we have in store for this year’s event! More socials and events are in the works and will be announced by Ian Gerada via “enews.” You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at https://www. goldcoastregion.org/calendar/ and on https://clubregistration.net/ for new events and updates. If you are interested in volunteering or have an idea for something fun, contact me at socials@goldcoastregion.org.
It’s not too early to start planning for the 2023 holiday parties. If you noticed, I said parties - not party. The Board of Directors has authorized two parties this year. One in the Broward area and the second party in the Miami Dade County area. Keep your eyes on your email for updates as the planning comes together for these events.

Christy Spangler, Social Chair May is a special month and a time to celebrate our mothers. On behalf of PCA Gold Coast Region, I would like to wish a very special Happy Mother’s Day to all of the Porsche Moms, including all those who baby their Porsches and fuel the passion for Porsche within their families. We hope you enjoy your special day! We also observe Memorial Day this month, the unofficial start to the summer season, as we honor the personnel who have died while serving in the U.S. military. GCR has some great events planned for this month! Registration is now open on https://clubregistration.net/ for the following: F1 Viewing Party at Hagerty Garage + Social, May 8th, Delray Beach - This event includes a pop-up people’s choice car show, various refreshments, and the ability

Does size matter?
For the past few years, I have been a judge in the annual PCA newsletter contest. Each region is placed into different classes from 1 through 6, depending on the number of members in their region. Class 1 contains smaller clubs, and Class 6 houses the largest clubs. Gold Coast has over 3,000 members, putting us in Class 6, the largest class. I have judged newsletters for Class 5 over the past few years, though this year I judged Class 3. With a maximum of 300 members, Class 3 is only one-tenth the size of the Gold Coast Region. Of the newsletters I judged this year, I witnessed various skill levels. One region, however, really stood out. If you think that the quality of the newsletters in smaller regions can’t compare to those from larger regions, you’d be wrong.
The quality of this particular newsletter certainly matched that of newsletters produced in regions that are ten times their size. So, with this example, size did not matter. It was the time, quality, and passion that the judges could see that had gone into developing the newsletter. It’s no wonder it was voted best in class in a small region. This month, on page 14, we have a very insightful article about Volunteering. When members join PCA, they often have two questions: What are the activities? How can I get involved? Though we have lots of articles on the activities, we have more articles planned at Die Porsche Kassette to help members find out how to become more involved. The foundation of PCA is built on volunteers. If you think about the size of our region, with over 3000 members, you can imagine that we
are constantly seeking volunteers to help with all the great activities we have planned. One of our favorite sayings is, “It’s not about the cars. It’s about the people.” Who are the people we are referring to? You - the member and, hopefully, a current or future volunteer. To answer the question, “Does size matter?” Well, it does matter. More specifically, when the question refers to the number of volunteers we have supporting the region’s activities, size matters. Come join our volunteers, such as the writers, photographers, editors, and graphic artists who put together the Kassette every month, and help the Gold Coast region continue to grow. See you at our next event,
Roger

It Was No Trick -
It Was the Gimmick Rally at Everglades National Park AJ Moffitt, Staff Writer
Andrew Moffitt, Event Photography
On March 12th, and what turned out to be a beautiful Saturday, members of the Gold Coast Region of the Porsche Club of America met down in Everglades National Park to enjoy the fun of the Everglades Rally and National Park Tour. Not only was I able to cover this event for the Kassette as a staff writer, but my husband, Andrew, and I were fortunate enough to be able to enjoy the festivities as participants. This was our first rally, also known as a gimmick rally, and I am certain it won’t be our last! Organized by the club’s own Dottie and Steve Kidd, the gimmick rally had two take-off times – 9:00 am and 10:00 am. The fee for registration was $15.00 per car. Once registered, participants received a confirmation email instructing them to meet at the Coe Visitor Center at the front of Everglades National Park and to look for Dottie, Steve, and the multitude of Porsche flags. Upon arrival, participants checked in as either drivers or navigators. They were given a wristband to identify their participation, and they could get bottled water, sunscreen, and bug spray. This was a necessity since the event was in the Everglades, after all. In short, a gimmick rally is very similar to a scavenger hunt. You are given a list of questions or tasks to complete, with each item being worth a certain number of points. After driving around the designated area and answering the questions, you submit your responses to be tallied. In the case of a tie, the team with the shorter time would place higher. Fifteen minutes before each of the two start times, Steve held a brief meeting explaining what the rally entailed and giving participants an opportunity to ask any last-minute questions. Once questions and answers were over, the navigators grabbed their clipboards containing rally questions, final instructions, and a pen. Andrew and I were scheduled for the 10:00 am departure, so we arrived on-site just before 9:30 am. As we traveled from North Broward County, the first stop we made was to the restrooms. As we approached the buildings, we saw many of the 9:00 am participants looking at the signage and seeking answers to the rally questions. Some teams seemed to be more competitive, keeping their answers secret from others. Other teams, however, were more open with their responses and would share what they found among each other.

After using the facilities, Andrew and I headed back to the checkin area. I had an opportunity to speak to other participants and find out about their adventures. The first group that I spoke to was Herman Duran and Carmen Molina from Kendall. It was their first PCA event, and when I asked about the experience, Herman’s reply was overly positive, “So far, it’s awesome. We’re meeting some people. We’re having fun. It’s a great time of the day to be out here. I’m not an early bird, but I made it out here because I wanted to hang out with some Porsche enthusiasts. This is my first year and my first event, and I’ve already met four or five people who are as excited about Porsches as I am, and it’s just a great event to meet like-minded people.” We spoke for just a few minutes because they were still at the beginning of the rally, and they needed to complete the next set of tasks. Andrew walked around taking pictures before the start, so I went and found a seat on a bench, where I sat next to Peggy Raben, a 15-year member. Peggy and her husband, Paul, live in Fort Lauderdale and own a 2002 996 Twin Turbo, a 1986 930 Widowmaker, and a 1964 356 with removable hardtop. The two have done many events, including gimmick rallies, before. In addition to being PCA members, they also belong to the local Florida Owner’s Group, also called FOG, which is unaffiliated with PCA but aimed at 356 owners. She loves being in groups that are as helpful as PCA and explained to me, “Joining both the clubs has been a treasure-trove of information for us on repairs – who does the best job. And then my husband likes to work on our cars himself, so he gets a lot of details and clues and tips from other owners. It’s been wonderful.” I chatted a bit more with my bench mate until it was time for the 10:00 am group to get our instructions. Steve had us gather close, where he told us what we would need to do, and he had his sense of humor in tow. “It should be a lot of fun today.
Park Signage
You’re going to be starting here. And you’re going to start by walking in that direction. If I see anybody hop in their car and head that way, I’ll be here watching and shaking my head.” We all chuckled. Steve finished giving us the information we needed, and we were on our way.
The view behind the Coe Center
Groups headed towards the nearby signage where some of the first questions could be answered. Questions included, “Where was the bronze partner statue made?” and “What number would you call to report violations?” It was necessary to go inside of the Coe Visitor Center to answer some of the inquiries. If you had flipped your page over (as Andrew and I, unfortunately, had not) you would see that bonus questions included getting stamps from four of the locations we would be visiting. Let me just say, “Oops.” If you do get a chance to visit the Coe Visitor Center at Everglades National Park, make sure to exit through the back and take a moment to appreciate the scenery. There are two rocking chairs and some benches that you can sit on and take in the gorgeous weather and breathtaking views. After finishing our answers at the Coe center, we headed to our next stop, Royal Palm. Along the way, more questions plagued us, including, “What is the speed limit at .1 miles after you go past the entrance booth?” Arriving at Royal Palm, we noticed a car with a blue tarp over it. Thinking it it must be broken down, we steered clear of it as we parked our car. Soon after, we noticed Vultures...who knew? the sign. “WARNING. Vultures May Damage Vehicles. Vultures in this area are attracted to the rubber around windshields, sunroofs, and windshield wipers. Use provided tarps to cover vehicles.” I guess the car wasn’t broken down, after all. We knew we wouldn’t be there too long, so we didn’t bother to grab a tarp. Instead, we reviewed the area to answer a few questions and unknowingly missed the second opportunity to get a passport stamp. Might I say “oops” yet again?
Upon completing the answers at Royal Palm, our next stop was the Nike Missile Site. Andrew was excited to take a picture of our Boxster in front of the buildings. “When else would I have an opportunity to take a picture of my car in front of a Nike site?” he joyfully said as he snapped away. There were two buildings to visit containing Nike missiles, and by this point, we had noticed the four empty squares on the back of the page. At the first building, there was a stamper – so THAT’S what those squares are for! I applied the stamp, realizing that we were already down 10 bonus points, as each stamp was worth 5 points. It’s a good thing we were just there for fun! The next and final stop of the rally was the Flamingo Visitor Center. While there, we met a lovely park employee, Roxanne Zastrow, who was happy to assist us in answering some of the questions. This wouldn’t be considered cheating, would it? We again got stamped (two out of four isn’t bad) and finished answering the rest of the questions. Steve and Dottie, along with some participant volunteers, were just outside scoring the submissions. After you answered all that you could and turned in your sheet, you had an opportunity to grab a soda, water, or snacks, plus you had a chance to peek at the answers. Once done submitting answers, many opted to head to Schnebly Redland’s Winery & Brewery in Homestead, whose website tells us they are the southernmost winery in the United States (https:// schneblywinery.com/.) We were seated in the Grand Tiki Ballroom, though some participants arrived earlier than others and opted to dine at Schnebly’s brewery and bar. Jorge Martinez and his wife Margarita, who joined PCA in 2017, had gotten to the restaurant earlier than some, so they sat and ordered some luscious entrees before joining the rest of the bunch. PCA members continued to trickle in until we had four tables filled up. Before the food arrived, Steve and Dottie went to the front of the restaurant to announce the first, second, and third-place winners. In third place, with 56 points, were John and Celia Layzell. Second place went to Christy Spangler and Russ Karnap, who had met

once, and only briefly, before the event, but got paired together for the first time at the rally. Though they also had 56 points, they completed the rally in a slightly shorter time. First place went to Maria Armas and Julie Jones, who unfortunately were not at Schnebly’s to receive their trophy, but they had an amazing score of 59 out of a possible 60 maximum points. Julie, who hails from Pensacola, had suffered from COVID in Jan, and experienced a slow recovery—it’s as if all of the stresses of life have affected her. Maria gave her an excuse to visit, and Maria explained, “I called her and said I need a navigator, so she came down. We went to the event and it was so much fun— it’s the type of event that is low-stress, and you can get out of your head by concentrating on what you need to do. Life’s little problems have no opportunity to sneak back in. It was the perfect respite for both of us. It gives you some clarity of mind. You can see other problems in a different light. It was great.” As the parties finished dining, the rain was heading in, so many finished eating quickly to beat the downpour. It was a great day full of fun and friends, and Andrew and I are excited to participate in the next rally. And next time, we’ll certainly do better and look at the questions on both the front AND the back before we begin! If you’re interested in joining future gimmick rallies or other great club goings-on that require pre-registering, visit https:// clubregistration.net/. Also, check your email or right here in the Kassette for information on things you don’t need to register in advance for. For example, Porsches and Pancakes, held the first Saturday of each month, or the Thursday night socials held the third Thursday of each month. Both events have multiple locations available, so feel free to try one or try them all! 2nd

IN MEMORIUM Jack Fuller, a long-time member of the Porsche Club of America Gold Coast Region, passed away on April 14, 2022. Jack joined GCR on August 1, 1966, which placed him among our longest-standing and well-respected members, having been with GCR-PCA for nearly 56 years. Jack frequently drove his 356 with many of our friends, in particular, Lee Wood and Stan Pearlman. He had a great love for sports cars, especially Porsches, and spent countless hours organizing and participating in events for Ecurie Vitesse Sports Car Club, an Autocross Club in the lower Florida Keys, and Porsche Club of America. He was the driving force behind one of the longest-running events in the history of the Keys, the Bay Bottom Crawl, which ran on Loop Road on Sugarloaf Key each year for 57 years. Jack and his wife, Bettie Jocelyn (BJ), retired in 2016 and moved to Sebring, Florida. BJ passed away on May 27, 2021. Not long after, Jack’s health declined, and he returned to Key West to be closer to his children. Jack was a long-time Key Wester, as his father passed away when Jack was young, and his mother brought him to Key West in the 1940s. As recently as 2021, during the 48 Hours at Sebring, Jack came to the autocross course with his golf cart and helped to spread and pick up cones. While Jack might not have been a GCR officer, he was an active and valued member of the Gold Coast Region, and he will be missed.

Behar Family doing their “jump”! Pam and Howie selected a delivery of this vehicle at the Porsche Experience Center (PEC) in Atlanta. The delivery celebration began with an overnight experience in the Porsche Hotel next to the PEC. Excited, but with no clue of the plans for the GT3 delivery, it became an amazing day for the family. The PEC folks provide a guided tour through the facility and museum on the site, a side trip through the race simulators for the boys and an amazing lunch at Restaurant 356 overlooking the PEC track. According to Pam , they were treated like rock stars! Ultimately, the best part of the day was the unveiling of their new 2018 911 GT3 in Guards Red. This 911 is a 991.2 model grade with a six-speed manual transmission, equipped with a 4.0 liter flat-six, offering up 500 horsepower. The vehicle is a beast—pull the cover off already! Following the immediate gasp for air, both Pam and Howie were each allowed a 45-minute-long track session. Individually, Pam and Howard drove
the PEC road course with a professional instructor onboard, each to enjoy – push – play – and familiarize themselves with their new 911 GT3. Both Cameron and Kyle were surprised with the hot laps around the track. Quite a full and exciting day for certain. Pam prefers that they keep their Porsche vehicles as stock, straight as they come from the factory. However, she does have a classic Nardi Mahogany rimmed steering wheel on the Penelope, while the 930 Turbo sports a Momo Prototipo steering wheel. Simple, classy upgrades. When asked to select her favorite Porsche, Pam quickly responds that it is the Irish Green 356C. It is truly a spectacular car. However, she is also partial to the 550 Spyder as seen on trips to Naples and Revs Institute. Their other PCar interests include local GCR rallies, and multi-day drives to the mountains. They had a good bit of fun
on the GCR Christmas Mystery Poker Rally. During the gathering and start at ParkHaus, we were treated to a look at the 930 Turbo, which happened to be at the shop for a tune. They have been Gold Coast Region members since 2003 when that first Cayenne was acquired. Pam’s daily driver is her 2013 White Cayenne GTS, exhibiting over 100K miles on the odometer. When looking for Pam and Howie, the first places to see them will be the concours events around South Florida. Next, will be a few of the Cars & Coffee locations, or an occasional Thursday evening out in Miami-Ft. Lauderdale with their running buddies. They would like to plan trips to both Rennsport and Luftgekühlt, and perhaps Porsche Parade in the coming years. Irrespective of where you look for them, perhaps the easiest way to identify them will be by finding Speedster, the Golden Doodle. Pam or Howie will be at the other end of his leash! Most likely they won’t be too far from Penelope either.

RUNNING FOR 70 YEARS!!! SEBRING 12 HOURS, 2022 Mark Johnson, Staff Writer
Sebring International Raceway is a magical place. It is a home of legends and legendary sports car racing since the first 12 Hour race in 1952. Porsche as a marque has won the prestigious race a record 18 times between 1960 and 2008. Names like Stirling Moss, Juan Manuel Fangio, Bruce McLaren, and Hurley Haywood adorn the Hall of Legends building at the track. It is a place of racing history featuring such cars as the Ferrari 312, the Porsche 917, the Ford GT40, and including the Porsche Carrera RSR, as well as 935s and 962s. It is one of the “BIG 3” sports car races that includes the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 24 Hours of Daytona. In recent years, five different classes have run simultaneously during the event. This year was no exception with the classes comprising DPI (Daytona Prototype International), LMP 2 & LMP3 (Le Mans Prototype), and GTD Pro & GTD Am (Grand Touring Daytona Professional, and Pro/Amateur divisions). For the 2022 race, Porsche vehicles ran in both GTD Pro and GTD categories. It was HOT! As a spectator, 90+ degree sunny weather made watching the racing and practice/qualifying runs a challenge over the four-day weekend. No doubt it was worse for the drivers, as most of these race cars are not air-conditioned. Drivers wear “cool suits” whereby chilled water is pumped through a t-shirt type of wearable. Once the ice melts in the cooler, however, it gets quite uncomfortable behind the wheel. Besides hot, it was also crowded. Following almost two years of lockdowns and restrictions it seemed every race fan wanted to be in south central Florida this spring. Sebring gates opened on Tuesday (early for the first time) to allow those arriving before
racing teams began to park their motor homes, trailers, or tents in a favorite spot along the track or in the infield. There are some reserved spaces in what is considered the North Paddock area. However, much of the infield is “first come, first served” parking for your tent, car, etc. By Saturday morning of the 12 Hour race, there was hardly a spot to find anywhere along the track or in the Green Park infield areas. What about the fans? Wahoo! While the shenanigans have been toned down since the wild 80s and 90s, the fans are still crazy. We find a group of folks at the track every year wearing milk cow outfits complete with udders. A live rooster is spotted with eggs along the back side of the track between turns 10 and 12. Everyone is wearing some type of racing shirt or car manufacturer’s logo, some over 20 years old or more. A good guess would suggest that the average Sebring attendee has been at the races continuously for 15 to 20+ years. The group encampments range from a simple pop up tent and a few lawn chairs to two- and three-tier scaffolding with flags, lounge chairs and a liquor store supply of beer and booze. The turn 4 crowd had a full set-up of lighted palm trees that easily stretched 100 feet along the fence at the turn, as seen during the race at night on the television production. It is that special. Beyond the annual 12 Hour race, there are multiple other races held throughout the four days. The Porsche Carrera Cup holds two sprint races in the new 992 Cup cars. 45 of these incredible beasts took to the 3.74-mile track in the two race sessions, one on Thursday morning and the second on Thursday afternoon. To see all 45 of these beautiful Porsche Cup cars running, bobbing, weaving for podium finishes was simply wonderful. Additionally, the weekend features the IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge for grand sport (GS) and touring cars (TCR). One of our local Porsche shops, KMW Motorsports in Boca Raton, supports the #5 Alpha-Romero Giulietta Veloce in TCR. The “other” major race of the weekend was the WEC, or World Endurance Championship, run on Friday. This is an 8-hour endurance race that also includes several classes: hyper car (hybrid), LMP2, and LeMans GT Endurance (LMGTE). The WEC was run from noon on Friday until 8:00 pm but was unfortunately shortened due to severe weather and lightning

in the track area. The WEC race is also known as the Sebring 1000, but the cars did not make that distance with the weather curtailing the race at 7:30 pm. As in other years, Porsche ran in the LMGTE group, and as expected they did very well. The #92 911 RSR Team of Estre/Christensen won the LMGTE Pro group. The #91 Porsche GT team 911 RSR took a 3rd place in the same race. And in LMGTE Amateur, Porsche vehicles took 3rd and 4th among 12 total vehicles in the class. In the flagship 12 Hour event, however, it was Cadillac in the DPI Chip Ganassi car as the overall winner. For Porsche vehicles running in the GTD Pro and GTD Pro/Am it was a challenging day. Following the big win at Daytona for Porsche, IMSA required all vehicles in GTD to run with restrictor plates. The air flow restrictors did not negatively impact the big V8 Chevy Corvette, Lamborghini, or Ferrari cars but did have a huge deleterious effect on the Porsches. As a result, Porsche vehicles were simply not as competitively fast in the 12! We surmise the thrilling finish at Daytona 24 Hours was a bit too much for IMSA to acknowledge. Sebring produced one huge “win” for our own Gold Coast Region member, Howard Jacobs. His LMP3 car, #38 Cardio Access Performance Tech Motorsports, fought valiantly and was awarded a 3rd place, podium finish in the 12 Hours of Sebring. Howard Jacobs is working on an article offering a true insider’s perspective on their efforts at Sebring. Look for this article in a future issue of Die Porsche Kassette.

Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair The big news is that here we are in April and have already completed four autocross events! Actually, by the time you read this in early May, we will have completed our fifth Autocross of the season. Although Covid put a damper on everything over the last few years, including AX, it looks like events are returning. Our first four Autocross events were double events (two Autocross events in one day); however, the April 30th event will be just one event at the Sebring Skid pad. Thanks again to our friends at Sun Coast Region for providing us the opportunity to run on the skid pad on the weekends they rent the track. Recently, the PCA parade competition rules (PCRs) committee finalized some significant rules changes, and new Autocross classes, all of which were recently made official. One of the biggest changes in Autocross classes was the elimination of four sets of Autocross classes ( small region, medium region, large region and parade), resulting in a single set of revised classes. The new class structure combines larger numbers of car types, and significantly reduces the number of classes. The GCR Autocross program will start using the new class structure in the 2023 Autocross season since we already have four autocross events using the current classes and it would be difficult to shift rules in mid-season. 2022 Parade attendees can expect to see these new Autocross classes when registering. Rule changes in any form of motor sport are an evolving process. As new cars are introduced, rule makers try to group cars with similar performance potential together. With PCA, in addition to class, there are four general categories based on performance modifications your Porsche has undergone. As cars receive upgrades, they “progress” from stock to prepared to improved to modified class. The rules can be somewhat confusing, so please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions about your Porsche’s class or category. Gold Coast Region, PCA national and many other PCA regions use the PCA Parade Competition Rules (PCRs) for classing cars for Autocross competition.

Summary of AX class changes: Classes were reduced by doing the following:
Event #6 9/10/2022 @ Sebring in conjunction with the Suncoast Region DE.
Stock Classes (reduced from 13 to 9 classes) Combine S01, S02 and S03 into one class (S01). All early cars up through 1977 911, plus the early Boxster in one class. Combine S11 and S12 into one class (S09). All Cayenne, Panamera and Macan in one class. Combine S10 and S13 into one class (S08). Carrera GT, 918, Taycan moved to class with fastest GT cars.
Thanks again to our friends at Suncoast for the site Event #7 October or November. Location TBA possibly FAU, PBIR or with another PCA region. Most of the above dates & sites are subject to change due to weather, availability, and factors beyond our control.
Production Classes (reduced from 10 to 7 classes) Combine P02 and P03 into one class (P02). Combine P06 and P07 into one class (P05). Combine P08 and P10 into one class (P06). Carrera GT, 918, Taycan moved to class with fastest GT cars. Improved and Modified classes (reduced from 5 to 3 classes each) Combine I02 and I03 into one class (I02). Same for M02 and M03 (M02). Combine I04 and I05 into one class (I03). Same for M04 and M05 (M03). I need to repeat an important message. To continue offering a world class Autocross program, we need a new site. This could be a BIG parking lot, air strip or similar piece of pavement in the Tri-County area to hold our Autocross events. In the past we have used shopping center lots, sporting and gaming venues, and school/government parking facilities, which have no parking bumpers and are reasonably priced. What we need is an “in”—someone who has a connection to a suitable property and can help us get our foot in the door. Do you know of such a site? Are you the person with the “in”? Please call me at 954- 292-3915 if you can help finding a new Autocross site. Tentative AX schedule for the remainder of 2022 Event #5 4/30 /2022 @ Sebring in conjunction with the Suncoast Region DE. Thanks again to our friends at Suncoast for the site

Jay Haylen Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor
I was honored to have been asked by the Kart4Kids Committee to write a piece highlighting Jan Haylen’s career and accomplishments to be published in their 2022 official K4K Program. I was so impressed with Jan’s accomplishments that I though I would share with other Porsche enthusiasts and that’s why we’re publishing it here too. A few weeks before the K4K event, I called him, got his voicemail and left a message for him to call me back at his convenience. Little did I know that he was in the middle of his honeymoon! Congratulations! Sorry for the intrusion. The next day Jan was very gracious to return the call and we had a very nice conversation where I asked many questions, mostly about his career and his early karting life. “I started racing karts at 10 years old, a little late” said Jan, when I inquired about his introduction into motorsports . “A friend of mine had a homemade kart which he would share with me. Sometime later he was able to obtain a real (used) kart which we also shared and that helped me a lot”. About his beginnings he commented that his father and the rest of the family was very supportive of his racing even though no one in his family had been involved with racing before. About a year after his friend purchased a real kart, Jan was able to get his own. “It was used”, he said, “but that was it for me. Every spare moment that I had from that moment on was for racing”. At 15 Jan signed his first professional contract and was able to race against and for the biggest Karting Factory Teams in Europe. “My early background is a bit different than most other young drivers. Everyone wanted to jump into a Formula Ford as soon as they could, but I stayed in karts until I was 20 years old”. One of those that had left early had been Jan’s teammate, Jenson Button. I asked Jan if this had been in his native Belgium and he said that initially, yes, but as he got more and more involved, he was racing throughout all of Europe where 80% of the races were being held.

I commented how we had had similar early racing careers. He asked what I meant and I told him that I had started racing on a home-built kart as well at the age of 7. My Dad had helped me get a used pro kart and that took me from team to team, staying very active till I was 20. But then I realized that God had a sense of humor. “What do you mean”, he said. I told him that God had put Ayrton Senna in my brain but then he gave me a 6’ 1” body which carried over 100 pounds more than the rest of my competitors so I had no chance. He laughed out loud, so I guess he agreed. And what about after karting, I inquired. “In 2000 I jumped into Formula Ford”, said Jan, “slowly because I had a limited budget. I then moved to England, made connections and I ended up racing for a small private team. In 2001 I was the first British Formula Ford Champion to win with a small private team and that gave me the push. A short time later I got a contract with the Mercedes Benz Junior Program AMG/Formula 3”. By the end of 2005 Jan decided to move to the US to do Indy (Champ Car at the time) for 2006 and 20007 where he raced with several teams: Dale Coyne Racing and Conquest Racing. “There was an opportunity for me to do more in open wheel racing, but when the two Series merged, GT was the way to go for me. I have no regrets”. In 2008 he began his North American sports car racing career where he participated in multiple sport car series racing different brands of cars as well. In 2009 Jan signed on to do the Firestone Indy Lights but ended up not racing. In the 2010 Indy Lights season opener in St Pete, he finished second and in 2011 he drove in the 24 Hours of Daytona and made six starts in the European FIA GT3 championship. From 2014 to today, Jan has been immersed in GT cars, mostly Porsches and from 2017 he’s been most actively racing with Wright Motorsports.
2021 was Jan’s banner year. He won the Michelin Pilot Sport Challenge Driver’s and Team Championship. Teaming up with Patrick Long and Trent Hindman for the four endurance races of the WeatherTech Sports Car Championship, they finished second in class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in the number 16 Porsche 911 GT3R and took a fifth place at Petit Le Mans, earning the 2021 Michelin Endurance Cup. For the rest of the season Jan raced the number 20 Porsche 911 GT3R with Fred Poordad, finishing in the top five for all thirteen races. They earned the Driver’s Championship Title and Wright Motorsports the Team Championship Title. The nine championship titles won by Jan in 2021 earned him the prestigious Porsche Cup Award, since 1970, an annual honor given to the most successful private (non-factory) Porsche driver. The cup came accompanied with a brand new Porsche as well. Congrats! At the end of the year, Wright Motorsports announced that Jan would run another full season (2022) alongside Ryan Hardwick, racing the number 16 Porsche 911 GT3R in the IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship.
They started the new season very well indeed. On January 20th, 2022, the Wright Motorsports’ number 16 Porsche 911 GT3R driven by Ryan Hardwick, Jan Heylen, Zacharie Robichon and Richard Lietz took first place in the GTD Class at the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona! During our interview, I asked Jan if he could point out one particular special win during his career that stood out in his mind. He told me that every win had been special in its own way and he couldn’t point to one in particular, but in the same breath he also said that because of his long-time friendship with Patrick Long, winning their Class at the 12 Hours of Sebring with Patrick as a co-driver had been very special for him. He also said: “Winning the Rolex 24 and the Michelin Pilot Challenge had been very rewarding as well.” I could have chatted for hours with him, but I thanked him and let him rest. Godspeed Jan Heylen. Have a great 2022 and beyond. You have a large fan base behind you! Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

GUESS WHO – A GCR MATCH GAME… Here’s a throwback to our youth, and a bit of fun as well! Match the photo to the person! Get them all correct and win a New Porsche GT3RS! You will need to select it from those being off-loaded from the shipping vessel FELICITY ACE, once it is towed and docked, probably somewhere on the west coast of Europe. We hope you enjoyed the APRIL FOOLS game.

“Night Lights” Bruce Margulies sent this photo of his 1988 Carrera taken at Porsche West Broward. He purchased it new in 1988 and says that it is all original, including the paint and interior. You can tell that he has enjoyed his Porsche over the 34 years, since it now has over 144k miles on it. “I will never sell it,” says Bruce. Bruce took this photo using an iPhone 11.
