FIRST TURN

Well, my friends the “Escape to the Cape” event has passed into the books as another great event put on by the members of Gold Coast Region. The amount of anticipation that surrounded the event was unbelievable, but as it turned out, well justified. By the time you read this you would already have seen the articles both in the Kassette and online on the Club website. So, I won’t go over the same grounds that those sources have covered, I just want to touch on a couple of facts.

I believe the final registration for the event was close to 370 people. With about 140 Porsches on property. Over 220 people attended the banquet and the raffle generated over $8,000 dollars for charity. The car show was a big success with all types of Porsches being shown. From my prospective the most important thing I noticed that we had very few issues pop up to spoil the fun. Everyone seems to have enjoyed themselves and would be willing to do it again.

you to the members that volunteered to help. The members of the Board worked their tails off to make sure people got items created for Escape Swag. I’m told that the T-shirt has become a collector’s item. None the less, a lot of responsibility for the success of the events fell on the shoulders of those that volunteered to help and

thus the amount of time available to them to relax was less. I would like to express a thank you from the Board of Directors to all those heroes.

I’ll announce now, that next years Escape will be bigger and better. First it will grow to a Friday to Sunday event. We had almost 100 members come in on Friday even through that was not officially part of Escape. By increasing the event to officially three days allows us to better arrange the existing events and add new ones. Making a better event for everyone. Here’s to a bigger and better Escape next year.

As we move towards the end of the year it also signals the end of the current Board of Directors. It is imperative that when your ballet arrives that you vote and return it as soon as possible. This club relies on the dedication of those that choose to step up into leadership positions to give of their time and energy to chart the club’s direction. By voting you make your feelings known and drive the direction of your Club.

I have had the honor of being President for the last two years and would like to think I have had some influence in the resurgent’s of the region during and after the effects of Covid. Yes, I am running for reelection, but that’s not the point of this message. We have a great slate of candidates that are running for a position on the Executive Board or as a director. You will find their biographical information in the Kassette and online. Please take the time to look over the information as you form your choices.

I do have to give a special thank
Peter

SHIFT INTO SOCIAL

Football season has begun, schools are back in session, and it seems like all signs lead to the fall season except our won derful warm South Florida weather. At the time of this writing, I am looking forward to the Rock, Blues, & Brews event at the Black Flamingo Brewery organized by Mike Del Pozo and then the North Carolina trip organized by Ed Blair. Maybe we will feel some of fall-ish weather in the mountains at the Topoco Lodge and on the Tail of the Dragon.

In September, the board of directors and committee chairs welcomed our new members at the new member picnic in Tradewinds Park. It was nice to have at the opportunity to welcome everyone to our region and talk about what we have to offer. Thank you to our Membership Chair, Ian Gerada, for putting this event together.

The popular Oktoberfest event will take place on October 8th at the Biergarten in Boca Raton. This year it will be back in full swing with a pig roast and some fun Oktoberfest games. RSVP is open for that on clubregistration.net. There are more events in the works for October and November, so stay tuned for upcoming announcements.

This is also the time of year when our attention begins to turn to the holidays. December 3rd brings our Holiday in Para dise Holiday party at Margaritaville in Hollywood. More information will be coming out about that soon.

In 2023, Gold Coast Region will be celebrating its 60th anniversary. The anniversary committee is at work planning a num ber of events to take place throughout the year, marking this milestone. We are looking for a great 60th anniversary tagline and are holding a contest where the winner will receive $75.00 on clubregistration.net to go towards a future event. More information about the contest is in an ad in this issue.

Stay tuned for upcoming announcements about these events via emails from Ian Gerada via “enews.” You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at goldcoastregion.org/calendar and on clubregistration.net for events and updates.

If you are interested in volunteering or have an idea for something fun, contact me at socials@goldcoastregion.org. Christy

Working with our professional staff of writers, copy editors, graphic artists, and photographers is a privilege. At our monthly staff meetings, we start with a review of the previous magazine and ask the question, “What improvements can we make?”

Reviewing the layout before writing my column, I paused and analyzed the content. I hope you have noticed the changes we have been gradually making and are enjoying each issue. You are in for a great adventure!

This month we start with a Porsche drive thru an 11-mile tunnel in Europe. What could go wrong, you ask? We learned about this adventure from one of our GCR members at a recent event at Champion Porsche. Our Copy Editor Tom Goodmann wrote about how you meet the nicest people in a Porsche. This is very true!

When my wife and I first joined the club, we noticed how helpful the members were in ensuring we got involved and enjoyed all of the events that PCA offered. At our first Zonefest, after being members for only 2 weeks, a member from another region offered to wax our Boxster. At the same time, I witnessed a GCR member repairing a tire on a competitor’s car. Those two experiences told me we had joined the right club.

Each month we get to meet one of our members in Mark Johnson’s column, Finding Gold. The column is a great way to learn about some of our Gold Coast members. This month’s column is about Alexander Lozev.

We also have a great article about Escape to the Cape from Rick

Veingrad, with the layout done by graphics artist Melissa Hyland.

Photographs were provided by Christy Spangler, Mike Del Poso, and Andrew Moffitt. Another one of our writers, AJ Moffitt, has written a few articles about volunteering and our upcoming election. We want to help you get better involved. The candidate’s bios are provided for a second month with one addition on page 24 that was nominated at our September meeting. Make sure to read the Notice of Election on page 21 and review all of the bios. You will receive an e-mail when the election opens on October 15th. Please vote to support your leadership selections. Electronic voting ends on November 15th.

Welcome to Fall

What has happened to 2022? We are now in the final stretch of this year, and down here is South Florida, this must be my favorite time of the year. The weather hopefully cools down (ever so slightly) the humidity drops, and we can enjoy our cars even more. Before you know it will be 2023 with a whole new year ahead of us.

I follow quite a few online Porsche forums, I always smile when I read about our northern Porsche enthusiasts who start of posts by saying something like, “My last drive this year with my Porsche, then its off to winter hibernation” Us South Floridians know little about winter hibernating our cars. Personally, I see fall and winter as the ideal time to drive. Let’s get out and drive.

Adventure in the St. Gotthard Tunnel

My wife, Silvia, and I spend parts of our summers in Europe. We were both born and raised in Germany, so we travel “home” to visit family and friends and to explore new places. Two years ago, we bought a 2009 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 in Frankfurt, Germany after years of bad experiences with car rentals. When it is not being driven the 911 rests in Freiburg, Germany in the Black Forest, where we have an apartment.

Last summer we decided to partake in a tour of Italy. Leaving home in Freiburg we traveled south to meet with PCA members Alessandra and Guido Trussardi and their Porsche 993S. Our meeting point was Lago Maggiore. The route to Lago Maggiore is a beautiful drive from our home to the lake on the south side of the Alps. “Lago” is the largest lake in Switzerland and the second largest lake in Italy. The northern head of Lago Maggiore is in Switzerland and the southern portion in Italy.

Our German housed 911 Carrera 2

What makes this trip to Lago Maggiore interesting is the St. Gotthard Tunnel. The tunnel runs through the Swiss Alps from Göschenen in Canton Uri to Airolo, Canton Ticino, all in Switzerland. The tunnel is 11 miles long with 2-lane traffic and serves more than 1,500 vehicles per hour. The tunnel is part of St. Gotthard Pass, which is one of two main north-south routes through the Swiss Alps.

While this 11-mile-long tunnel is dark and a bit daunting, the mountain pass is filled with beautiful scenery and adds a short delightful hour to our trip.

Allowing a few days at the Lago in beautiful places like Verbania, Canopio and Ascona, Switzerland we headed further south to the ocean side of Liguria, Italy. Here we stayed a few days in Celle Ligure right between Nice and Genoa enjoying the Italian countryside and cuisine.

Ready to complete our tour, Sylvia and I drove 200 miles north from seaside Liguria back to Switzerland on the southern side of the Alps. It was our intent to retrace our outbound route back through the St. Gotthard Tunnel and St. Gotthard Pass. North to south or south to north travel offers equally stunning scenery. This road is meant to be driven in a Porsche.

On our trip back North, and not long after entering the St. Gotthard Tunnel, Silvia enjoying the view above Lago Maggiore

I noted a battery and alternator warning message in the dash. “Oh, great!” I thought. “This couldn’t happen on the 200 miles open highway we drove all morning. No; it had to happen now in a busy and packed tube.” With no emergency bay in sight, we couldn’t stop. Behind us there was a long line of vehicles comprising hundreds of cars, buses, and huge trucks. I didn’t have the opportunity to finish that thought when the whole dashboard lit up like a Christmas tree. Vehicle coolant and oil temperature were climbing, with coolant temp soon in the red. Fortunately, by the time the red-light flashed, an emergency pull-off bay was in sight. I turned into the area and safely stopped the car, taking several deep breaths.

A beautiful chalet along our drive

Diagnostic: the bolt for the belt tensioner broke. The repair could not be made at this shop as they only worked on VWs, Fords and Opels. So, we contacted our auto club, ADAC. They arranged a rental car and paid for the $500 tow to transport the Carrera back to Freiburg, a trip of 200 miles. How long it would take to get the car to FVD Brombacher in Freiburg was the next question. The repair shop owner said forever—and he was not kidding. It was vacation season and thousands of stranded cars required transport north. After four weeks our 911 finally arrived in Freiburg and was fixed by FVD Brombacher, our favored Porsche shop. Unfortunately, we had already left for Florida before the repair was completed. Our 911 Carrera now must wait for another adventure, perhaps northward this time.

I needed those breaths as once I exited the car as I was hit with 100ºF temperature and exhaust fumes that made me dizzy. Fortunately, an emergency phone was found behind two automated steel doors, so I made the call for a tow. I got back into the car and a short 10 minutes later we saw the flashing lights of the tow truck approaching. The tow truck stopped traffic so we could push the 911 to a position where the Carrera could be safely loaded. With our Porsche on the flatbed, we rode the remaining 9 miles to the end of the tunnel. The tow driver dropped us at a nearby car repair station.

Loading up in the tunnel, not a fun event

You meet the nicest people . . . in a Porsche

Some of us are of an age (ahem!) to remember the slogan of a famous magazine and TV ad campaign, first run in 1963 for the Honda 50 Super Cub and soon used across the product line. “You meet the nicest people on a Honda,” the ads claimed, an effort to change the image of motorcyclists from that of Brando-like “bikers.”

It worked. In 1963 alone Honda sold 100,000 Super Cubs—nearly sixteen times the number the company imported in 1959—and soon gained half the U.S. market in scooters and motorcycles.

The public image of Porsche people, of course, needs no such rehabilitation, but something similar is just as true: you meet the most positive people in Porsches. Come to any Porsche gathering and you will find plenty of proof.

Just two stories will serve, drawn from several conversations enjoyed at the “Cars & Coffee” event, part of the DRT weekend bridging April and May this spring. That mild Saturday morning saw a mix of sun and clouds looking down on a couple of hundred Porsches lined up along the roadways and parking places in the Waterford Business Park just south of Miami International Airport. The afternoon forecast called for rain; the morning called for revving engines.

Dynamic Duo Outlaws

“She’s a mess, but she’s mine.”  Chris Bolton had driven down to DRT from Jacksonville in his 1975 911S—

well, that’s what “most of it is,” he allows.  It was a “project car”—a common euphemism in the collector community—that his friend found for him six years ago in Zephyr Hills.  The two of them trailered it home and began what Bolton calls “a resurrection” of the car, purchased for 20K.  The car had a 1993 964 motor in it when he bought it, worth more than what he paid for the car! “It was a piece of junk but had a lot of potential.”  These days it sports a rebuilt transmission, new suspension, brakes, wheels, and tires, and wears some replacement fiberglass body parts.

His advice to others is to shop around for Porsche factory parts online which, he finds, needn’t always be

expensive.  Chris has also added an electric AC unit made in the UK by Classic Retrofit, including a second condenser to deal with Florida’s humid climate. While a stock AC was available in 1975, it would not likely be up to the challenges of our hot and heavy summers. “The CR unit,” says Chris, “is transformative.”  Eventually there will be a repaint too to match the color of the fuel cap, which wears the car’s original color, Gemini Blue.  Chris did the interior himself: “The car is my therapy.”

This is not his only Porsche, all the same. Chris also has a 2001 996 Turbo and a 1989 911 Carrera Silver Anniversary Edition, one of only 240 coupes made.  He prefers these older, lighter, smaller cars over

Chris Bolton and his outlaw 911S

Continued the more recent ones with larger dimensions.  And he continues a family tradition, for his dad got him started in Porsches.  Chris’s father purchased a 356B from racing legend Lake Underwood (no less!) It was a Super 90 Roadster, which Bolton senior sold, all the same, to buy his fiancé a wedding ring.  Now, that’s love!  When Chris saw one go for sale at close to half a million dollars, he asked his father what his 356 had been worth.  “Priceless,” said his father, “because without it, you wouldn’t be here!”

And who was the friend who found Chris Bolton’s resto-rection project?  That would be Chris Cusimano, who has a talent for locating unloved Porsches to bring back out on the road. He drove his Porsche down from Jacksonville with his friend.  Along with a valve job, his ’86 Carrera has been repainted in its original white, the work done

professionally with the glass out, along with a red interior that Cusimano installed himself, producing a contrasting color combination that is his favorite. Like his friend’s father, at one point this Chris also sold a Porsche to purchase a ring for his bride. An avid cyclist, just over a year ago, he was hit by a car on his way home with a friend from a group ride. “I’m happy to be here,” he reflects. Four months in a wheelchair and a back brace gave him plenty of time to think, though it was evident from visiting with these two guys that their priorities—family, friendship, and Porsches (and cycling)—have been clear for a long time.

A Restorative Covid Year

“Inspired by the great reflection in life—COVID” is how Marc Willard, a technology entrepreneur, explains the rerouting of life for him and his wife, Stephanie, in the past year and more

from one coast to the other, including his hands-on restoration of a standout car.

As soon as we arrived on the scene, my eyes sweeping over the twin lines of Porsches queued up and stretching north toward the lakes and the airport, the ’73 911T caught my attention.  It was that livery, of course, the famous Gulf blue color from the very period of the car’s manufacture.  Inside the car were Stephanie and Marc Willard, lately of Sarasota, the driver sporting a narrow-brim Panama hat.  But that’s not where the story of this car begins.

The couple were living in Southern California when COVID began to change the shape of life for millions, and to end many lives around the world. Marc’s response was to reflect, and step back from his role as a F500 executive and take up restoring and modifying this wonderful car.  A few friends with lots of experience working

Bolton’s beautiful badge Chris Cusimano in his ‘86 Carrera

on Shelby cars taught him—at times by sitting and watching Marc learn by doing the work himself across a year.  He never read a manual.

Technically the car is now an outlaw, as it has been modified from a T to an ST in body form, along with changes to the engine.  Out back is a hotrodded 2.5-liter boxer six, enlarged from the stock 2.3-liter engine, revving with mechanical fuel injection and race cams. This engine build was meticulously completed by the renowned Porsche racer, Wayne Baker. The steel fender flairs are custom— “bespoke” as the British say—and the whole body was taken down to base metal, after which a filler primer was applied, but no filler.  Then the car was shot with single-stage paint, followed by ten hours of color sanding, and finished with three coats of clear coat.

Further touches taking the car away from stock and toward an elemental custom cool include a backdated dash with no glove box or ashtray, in the style of ‘60s-era 911s.  The value of the original restored Recaro sports seats approaches the price of a solid early 996; Marc had the seat upholstery done professionally, the only element of the exterior and interior that does not show his hardearned skills in handiwork.  Another change is where the rubber meets the road: Marc has switched the stock 15-inch Fuchs for 16-inch 930 Fuchs wheels, upgraded the suspension and brakes to period 911 S specification, yielding more tire choices and improved handling. The drive to Miami for DRT was just the third trip for this Gulf blue beauty.

The work on the car gave rise to further reflection, and the couple relocated from the West Coast to the

Gulf Coast, as they enjoy sailing.  Like so many such efforts, this 911 T/ST restomod carries layered histories of the marque, of modification, and of owners/drivers. Did you notice that badge? It’s from the RAC—the Royal Automobile Club—and has been aboard every car Marc’s dad has ever owned.  And the shift knob, custommade from birchwood and oak, yields a feel and a look that are a delight to hand and eye.

As to why Porsches, the answer is simple: history.  A UK native, Marc discovered the beauty of the 365 and early 911 as a young teenager,

committing to own one at some point. And to add to the charm, this car shares the same birth year as Stephanie. All in all, Marc concludes, the effort has been “a labor of love and a keeper for life.”

That old Honda ad was a good one, to be sure. We have our own memorable slogan too, invoking a diverse community of passionate Porsche folks: “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” Come out to any Gold Coast Region event, or any PCA gathering across the country, and you’ll learn again how true it is.

DE - CORNER ENTRANCE

The Gold Coast Region is working to re-establish a viable, fun, and safe Driver Education program for our region. There is a need for a fresh approach. We have the time to nurture new ideas and a wider perspective to develop a DE program that is a benefit to our club and the drivers who participate.

When building a bonfire, we need a few base logs, some kindling, and a spark. Once we establish a good, solid flame, we can build it to a great fire. A Driver Education program requires similar basic pieces. We need to know the interest level, that is the number of members who wish to drive in a GCR sponsored DE event. We need instructors, and we need a track, the base logs. We are soliciting ideas from our member on items which will contribute to the overall success of a GCR DE, the kindling. Then, we expect to create the spark through a few off-track “prep meetings” to develop the initial flame.

With these basics, the Gold Coast DE Manager humbly requests your input. Send your suggestions to:

Mark Johnson, DE Manager 954-422-2199 mjsailing@hotmail.com

*Are you interested in driving in a DE event? *Are you a novice at DE, or a seasoned SOLO driver?

*Are you a PCA certified DE driving instructor? *Should there be any off-track events the day of the DE?

*Would you attend a novice course, WHY DE? *Has your Porsche been inspected for driving in a DE?

*Is there any interest to a social event with DE? *Where have you driven, and with what groups?

Gold Coast Region 60th Anniversary Tagline Contest

In December 2023, the Gold Coast Region will be celebrating our 60th anniversary. We will have celebrations throughout the year, but to do this, the 60th Anniversary Committee needs your help!

We are holding a tagline contest to align with the 60th theme. A tagline is a short saying that should be catchy and memorable. For example, PCA's tagline is: "It's not just the cars... it's the people."

Scan the QR code to submit your tagline idea by October 31, 2022. The 60th Anniversary Committee will select five finalists whose taglines will be submitted to the Board of Directors for the final selection. The winner will receive a $75.00 gift certificate to clubregistration.net, which can be used towards any event.

The winning tagline will be announced at the Holiday in Paradise Party on December 3, 2022, and in the December Kassette.

FINDING GOLD

Alexander Lozev

Keeping it simple with Porsche….

Alexander Lozev is a Floridian, born and raised in Miami Beach and Surfside. He currently resides in Aventura but has also lived in Boston and Los Angeles. We suspect it is the beautiful Florida summers that brought him back to South Florida. However, as a commercial real estate broker with his own brokerage firm (The Klapot Group), it is likely the exceptional Florida marketplace and business climate that has kept him in the southern tip of our great state: Hey, it’s Miami! That summer heat and humidity sure as heck aren’t attractive, although the winters are the bomb.

Alexander has been a Gold Coast Region PCA member for a bit over two years, but a Porsche owner since 2008 when he ordered his Cayenne GTS from The Collection in Miami. It took three months at that time from order-to-delivery (OTD), with the order

being placed in February 2008 and the vehicle being delivered in May of that year. This length on OTD feels quick in comparison to today’s lead time, as Porsche models can take anywhere from six to eighteen months, or even longer for a factory production order. Vehicle supply and demand has substantially stretched the length on OTD on a new Porsche as many of our members have noted. The Cayenne was delivered relatively quickly, and it is Alex’s daily driver, but the Cayenne is not his only Porsche.

Alexander was fortunate to acquire a second Porsche in October 2020. This beauty, a 2004 Porsche 911 40th Anniversary Edition (“40 Jahre” or “40 Fast Years” as Porsche named it) in GT Silver, was purchased from the original owner. The first owner ordered the 40th Anniversary 911 new from Braman Porsche in West

Palm Beach. He had driven the 911 for the past 14 years and had only accumulated roughly 27,000 miles – a rate of 2K miles per year. The car was in phenomenal shape and garage kept at the seller’s home in Wellington.

While many folks learn of cars for sale on Bring A Trailer, PCar Market, PCA Classifieds, or even word of mouth, Alexander was fortunate to see this Porsche on “OfferUp.” Apparently this was the only place the vehicle had been advertised and the seller indicated that Alex was only the third person to contact him about the 911 40 Jahre, as it had been on OfferUp for six months! There had been another Porsche collector from North Carolina who had expressed interest in the car, but Alex was local, showed up to look at the vehicle, and struck a gentleman’s agreement with the seller as Alex was serious about the purchase.

He provided the seller a serious earnest deposit (cash is king) and examined both the 911 and its meticulous records. This 911 was exceptionally well cared for and Alex knew he would be going home with it. Within a few days, both parties coordinated a visit to a local bank to complete the transaction. As a bonus, a lagniappe, the seller even gave Alex a Porsche mug that he acquired on a visit to Stuttgart from the time he ordered the car. Driving home in the 911, Alex had to negotiate a huge rainstorm, but it mattered not, as he was very excited and pleased with the purchase.

Not one, but two 40 Jahre Anniversary 911’s at Porsche West Broward, Alex’s on right and Roberto of TUNERS on left!
18 Die Porsche Kassette | Oct 2022

Today, the Cayenne has close to 100,000 miles on the clock and the 911 a touch under 32,000 miles. Both vehicles are very well maintained, as would be expected, and each has been upgraded, actually tailored, to suit Alex’s taste and driving style. With these upgrades, Alex prefers to keep the original parts and pieces so the vehicle may be restored to original Porsche spec. The Cayenne has received a 19” OEM wheel upgrade wrapped in 31” all-terrain tires (to help navigate those construction sites easily with clients), front and rear wheel spacers, a front light bar with Hella driving lights and a Porsche Tequipment Roof Transport System, where he will carry either a Tequipment bike carrier, a surf/ paddle board carrier, and/or cargo box depending on the activity. Other upgrades include Euro Amber taillights, two-piece front rotors, upgraded brake pads all around, and Castrol SRF brake fluid.

The 911 has also been so tailormade although from the factory, the 40 Jahre presents more than just a cosmetic upgrade as it came with X51 engine package, mechanical LSD and M030 sport suspension. Having been lowered to Euro spec with Porsche RoW springs and using

Castrol SRF brake fluid, the 911 breathes better with a Speedtech catless x-pipe, modified mufflers from another Anniversary 911, and a 997.1 air box with a BMC filter that does more than “jewel up” the engine bay by enhancing induction noise. Along with an alignment suited to his style of driving, this all amplifies and ties an experience together that now tells a story on each and every drive. A GT3 center console was added but made for some difficulty, as the double-din PCM radio needed to be converted to a single-din radio using an OEM

Becker unit with Bluetooth streaming. The HVAC controls also needed to be relocated to the upper dash and the rare carpet color needed to match. Every piece/part was sourced through Porsche by Alex himself and because he had no desire for Apple CarPlay, there was no need for the Porsche PCCM. There are a few other added items to both vehicles, and again, all can easily be brought back to factory original should that be necessary. The vehicles are each like a fine Savile Row suit, completely matched to Alex’s style and fit.

Ana Carolina and Alexander Lozev in Italy, 2016 40 JAHRE and playmates Alex, Ana and friends in the kitchen - where else would they be?
Oct 2022 | Die Porsche Kassette 19

Beyond Porsche, Alex enjoys domestic and international travel. He and his longtime companion, Ana Carolina, recently completed a trip to Glacier National Park and Yellowstone. Earlier trips have included most of the U.S. States east of the Mississippi River (from Maine to Florida, Wisconsin to Louisiana, and everything in between). Most of the west has been on their itineraries too, from Utah, Montana, Wyoming, and Idaho to Arizona, Nevada, and California. As international travelers, they have seen Italy, France, Spain, Switzerland, Germany, England, Iceland, and Central & South America with the Caribbean Islands sprinkled in for some quick, out-of-the-country trips. Alex has even lived in China. WHEW! Ana and Alex seemingly are always on the move!

Growing up in Miami Beach, Alex was influenced heavily by fancy cars, elaborate architecture, and mesmerizing design, thus attended Design & Architecture Senior High School. He then moved to Boston, MA where he studied at Boston University and the University of Massachusetts for his Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering. He followed that degree with a second BS in Industrial Design at the prestigious Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. Both degrees provided great value and insight in becoming an automotive designer, reasons why he lived in Los Angeles and China for several

years. The very demanding automotive industry, he found, had very little reward however, and thus Alex moved back to paradise, a place where people come to vacation, to start his brokerage firm.

Because Alexander has always been into cars, naturally he enjoys motorsport. Even since a little boy, he remembers watching Senna/Prost battling in F1 on TV to going to the Miami Grand Prix in the 80s back when it was a real street circuit in downtown Miami around Bayside, the Freedom Tower, and Biscayne Bay. Living in Los Angeles, a car culture city like no other on the planet, racing is everywhere. Alex’s commutes often involved going through the tight and twisty canyons we often see on YouTube from people reviewing cars—roads like Angeles Crest, Stunt Road, and Mulholland Drive. Alex also seems to be a natural at driving spiritedly as he does well when karting or taking his heavily track-prepped Audi to Track Day or Autocross events to tracks like Willow Springs or Button Willow in California, and Homestead or Sebring here in Florida.

When Alexander Lozev is not working, traveling, or going racing, he can be found around South Florida with his Porsche buddies. It is a great mix of air-cooled and water-cooled Porsche owners who meet once a week at various local restaurantwatering holes, including the second Thursday of each month at Miami’s Beat Culture. With business as hot as an August Miami summer day, Alex attends as many of these local events he can. He will also take some time for a long weekend at the WERKS Reunion in Amelia Island or the Rennsport Dragon Run later this month with the running group. He can be found on a Porsche run to Triad’s Seafood or Schnebly’s Winery with Ruben Fuentes on a Ruben’s A&W Run or two, and loves going to DRT every year. With the recently added exhaust upgrade on the 911, we will probably hear him long before we see him!

Enjoying Porsche camaraderie, Porsche’s infinite tailoring, and a simple joy of driving an exceptional marque. That’s Alexander Lozev.

Bios - Officers

PETER OLLIVIERE for President

I have been a Gold Coast Region member since 2000, and over those 22 years have served as Concourse Chair, Sponsorship Chair, Director, Vice President, and President.

When I became President, I immediately had to negotiate the creation of a new Region from what was the Northern part of Gold Coast original territory. I’m happy to say that although the birth of the Gulf Stream Region was not without its drama and pain, the net result has been a thriving sister Region to our North and a Gold Coast Region that is larger in membership and more vibrant than before the split. Those that preached disaster were wrong, and we can celebrate that.

From those that a lot has been given, a lot is expected. And Gold Coast has given more to charity than ever before. Not only have we given through our regular recipients, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Nicholas Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonalds House, but we addressed more direct giving community-based outreach. For the last two years we have given 400 Turkeys each year at Thanksgiving to the needy, followed by similar outreach with Christmas food baskets. Those efforts were recognized by PCA National with a third-place national award for Outstanding Service to the Community and Charity. The first time Gold Coast has been so recognized.

If you match people to jobs that they love, they excel, for example, our Social Chair, had to be convinced to take on the job, but once in it she has done a great job. Ian Gerada, Membership Chair is an outstanding addition to the Board. Ed Blair, Touring Chair, Rick Veingrad, Sponsorship Chair, Mark Johnson, DE Admin. All are doing terrific jobs for the Region, and I believe are among my greatest successes.

Christy Spangler joined the PCA in 2001 and became active in 2005, volunteering and contributing to the Potomac Region newsletter. In 2012, Christy returned to Florida and transferred to the Gold Coast Region. She continued volunteering at various events and contributing to Die Porsche Kassette. She also hosted the popular Jazz-Blues Potluck Social for three years. In 2020, Christy was elected as a GCR Director, and she started the PCA GCR Goodie Store. She was appointed Social Chair in 2021 and has enthusiastically committed to the region’s events.

Currently residing in Tamarac, Christy owns a 1985 944 that she enters in various PCA car shows and autocross events and a 2000 996 Carrera that she enjoys driving to social gatherings. Christy enjoys visiting different parts of the region, meeting and socializing with the members. Always ready to lend a hand to PCA, she has volunteered at Werks Reunion, Parade, Zone Fest, 48 Hours in Sebring, and various other PCA events.

Christy earned her Bachelor’s at Jacksonville University and Master’s from East Tennessee State University. She is an engineering graphic designer and visual communicator and has specialized in technical and engineering for 20+ years. Art, science, engineering, and technology, inspires her creativity, curiosity, and desire to both continue learning and help others. It’s her education and work experience that’s given her the skill set necessary to be a strong, active, and heavily involved leader for PCA.

If elected President of the Gold Coast Region, Christy Spangler would build upon the region’s successes and evolve them. She recognizes the need for more diverse activities and programs to engage the different interests of members. She is committed to supporting the team of Directors, Committee Chairs and our general membership while strengthening relationships with our sponsors to make Gold Coast Region a success.

In my spare time, I like to swim, play tennis, and participate in Gold Coast events. My goal is to encourage new and current members to become active so they can experience the camaraderie and friendships the club offers. I would appreciate your vote so that I can continue to give back to the club, which has given me so much over the years.

However, I do miss the Boxster. As many of you know I am currently on the Gold Coast board and serve as a director. I also organize our yearly trip to the North Carolina mountains. There has been one trip to Mount Dora, which I also arranged. Some of you will also find me assisting with the Escape to the Cape this year. Election Bios - Directors

Since January 2020, Mike has enjoyed working with the Gold Coast board as a Director. He is looking forward to continuing to help the Club grow and maintain member engagement.

He’s been a PCA member for 30 years and loves living and working in south Florida. He contributes his time, efforts and ideas to help make the club as active and enjoyable as possible.

He started out in PCA by attending social events and autocrosses, as well as the occasional DE. His first Porsche was an ’84 944, and he bought his first 911 in ’95 (and it’s still in his garage today). Over the past few years, he’s been fortunate to be able to attend and experience all types of PCA events across Florida and the southeast. Even during the challenges of the past few years, he remained active in Gold Coast social and driving activities, and assisted with as many events as possible. He hopes to continue to work on a variety of fun events and be able to get more people to enjoy volunteering.

Mike would appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve as a Gold Coast Region Director, to help us maintain a fun club that encourages member participation and volunteerism, car education, enthusiasm and giving back to our communities as well.

ANDREW MOFFITT for Director

Andrew Moffitt, PCA Gold Coast Region member since 2019 and long-time Porsche enthusiast, has been proud to be an active member of his local Porsche social club. In his professional life, he is the Chief Technology Officer for a local software development company. He has nearly 30 years of technical, security, and operational experience – almost 20 years with the same company.

It is hard for Andrew to remember precisely when his passion for Porsche began. It quite possibly started in the womb. He has always been a fan of Porsche for its heritage, craftsmanship, engineering, and the like. He is a lifelong race fan, including everything from dirt racing to classic 1980s-era IMSA racing up to current racing at LeMans and Formula One. Andrew realized a lifelong dream when he acquired his first Porsche, a 981-era Boxster, in 2019. A few years later, he and his wife also purchased a new Macan, and most recently, a classic 944 has joined the garage.

Andrew and his wife AJ have been actively participating in PCA events since joining the club. In February 2022, they also joined the staff for the Die Porsche Kassette, the monthly Gold Coast Region publication, as writers and photographers. This involvement has enabled them to take part in various club activities as both participants and volunteers and to share their knowledge of the club. It has also given Andrew a deeper understanding of what it takes to regularly put on the amazing activities that the club hosts.

At this time, Andrew is thrilled to have this opportunity to run for a Director position for the PCA Gold Coast Region. Andrew hopes he will be elected to be an integral team member that helps continue the improvement of our great PCA region.

RICK VEINGRAD for Director

As PCA Gold Coast member since 2014 and current GCR Board Director, I have been extremely involved in many of the club’s social events. As your GCR’s sponsorship chairman, I have helped raise many thousands of dollars to benefit our club’s many charitable causes. I have successfully attracted new businesses to partner with club activities, as well as increase new business development to benefit club goals.

As GCR’s Escape to the Cape chairman, I have helped create one of the largest PCA socials in the State of Florida. This PCA multi-regional event attracts over 300 members to Southwest Florida each year. This event includes a drive, charitable raffle, car show, and tech talks. In addition, I negotiated with the hotel special PCA rates with the hotel for our members, selling out the hotel.

Professionally, after receiving a business degree from the University of Miami in 1981, I started a chain of Video Stores in Broward County serving the area for over 30 years.

Other organizations I have been involved with include past president of the University of Miami Alumni Band 2018 - 2021, and past President of the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA) trade group.

I am asking for your vote to the GCR Board of Directors because of my continued commitment over the years to helping out the chapter, creating new ideas and programs, and continue to assist and communicate to chapter members.

Thanks for your support, Rick Veingrad

Six months of planning and POOF…

Escape to the Cape 2022 was a great success. For some PCA members, the weekend started early as Friday afternoon. Many of us, including Christy Spangler, Carolynn Ditrichs, Sharon Veingrad, Lisa Koller, Debra Flaherty, Mike Koller, Laura Koller, Mike and Leslie Del Pozo, Trish and Kent Gastineau, Ian Gerada, and Peter Olliviere, set up registration for check-in.

Friday evening, a group of about 30 met up at the nearby waterfront restaurant, Pinchers, for an outstanding dinner.

Early Saturday morning, about 50 Porsche owners met with their cars at Porsche West Broward, then caravanned to travel to the Boathouse Tiki Bar & Grill in Fort Myers. This year, for the first time, we had two other regions, Everglades and Gulfstream, join us in multiple rides to Escape to the Cape. Organizing the group’s sendoff at Porsche West Broward was Dale Huber, with the help of Mark Johnson, Ed Blair, Dan Doyle, and David Higgins.

While at Boathouse or during check-in, members were able to purchase tickets for the raffle that would be held at the evening’s dinner event.

Escape to the Cape took place at the beautiful Westin Cape Coral at Marina Village. After checking in on Saturday afternoon, some members enjoyed poolside drinks or relaxed in the pool.

Later that evening, many attendees enjoyed a dinner buffet in one of the venue’s ballrooms featuring prime rib, chicken, and shrimp. There were additional sales of the raffle tickets. Money raised from the raffle benefitted the Memorial Hospital Cancer Institute.

One of our sponsors of Escape to the Cape, Dr. Color Chip, gave certificates for Road Rash kits. Another sponsor, Tint Haus Customs, also provided a gift certificate for the raffle. Additional raffle prizes were provided by Griot’s Garage, Autogeek, Sonax, Seven Hotel Sebring, CanesWear! Davie, MCarCovers, Adam’s Detailing Supplies, P21S, Suncoast Region DE, and Vertex Auto Miami.

The largest prizes included two Porsche Gift Packs which each contained wine glasses, a golf bag, and balls. Plus, each gift pack also had a luxury watch provided by Fort Myers Porsche.

The grand prize was provided by Princess Cruise Lines, which was a Princess Cruise for two.

The winner of the Princess Cruise was Leslie Machado of Palmetto Bay. On a lucky streak, her husband, Jamie Machado, also was the winner of one of the two Porsche Gift Packs! You might be thinking something suspicious was going on, but there were two PCA Juniors who helped pull the tickets. Another lucky recipient was Bill O’Connor of Bonita Springs, who won the second Porsche Gift Pack.

During the dinner, Bobby Verela of Foreign Affairs gave a presentation. He even

Miki & Eti Moore line up at PWB for their Escape A few early birds in Cape Coral

brought his Porsche RWB Genki to the ballroom banquet floor. Foreign Affairs also provided two raffle certificates for merchandise. These certificates are redeemable for items such as a pillow, sandals, or even a framed picture featuring your own car.

Another sponsor of Escape to the Cape, Trish Gastineau from Trish Travel, spoke to the room about the status of the travel industry.

Then Dr. Marlene, while adorning a Wonder Woman cape, presented her spoken word poem. Her poem:

At the end of the dinner, guests were instructed to check under their seats. The lucky few who had a card taped to their chair were awarded the beautiful flower bouquet centerpiece from their table.

Sunday morning, the car show took place in the covered Westin parking garage. There were four judges, with judging headed by Peter Olliviere. A total of fourteen trophies were awarded. Also, during the car show, two tech sessions were presented, one by Dr. Color Chip and the other by Tint Haus Customs Davie.

For a special treat at the car show, Kona Ice doled out a variety of shaved ice flavors, a donation by the Gold Coast Region.

A thank you to our own Ian Gerada for creating the Escape agenda and creating the Escape to the Cape shirts. Also, thank you to Connectica for sponsoring the name badges and also to Paul Raben for making the badges. Additional thanks are owed to Andrew Moffitt, Mike Del Pozo, and Christy Spangler, who took thousands of awesome pictures at the event. Just in case anyone was forgotten, thank you to all the volunteers who gave their time this weekend to help the Gold Coast Region and the Escape to the Cape.

ESCAPE TO THE CAPE by Dr. Marlene

Escape, a word I know Houdini magic, fast not slow. Lightning speed with a show, the powerful Porsche escape.

Cape, as in my superhero outfit, not an ordinary, plain drape but a magical, mystical cape fluttering in a speeding Porsche.

Wonder Woman flying by, navigator in the Boxster, a well-seasoned youngster, enjoying the escape in my cape.

The Porsche growling, howling, shiny, clean with a gleam, made this drive a dream, easily escaping to the Cape.

Thanks, Porsche Club of America, and the volunteer connections, for this Florida destination, this great Escape to the Cape.

Volunteers make it all happen

TECHNICAL WIZZARDRY

New PCA Member

One of my favorite American racecar drivers became one of us this past weekend. Four-time NASCAR Cup Series Champion Jeff Gordon became a PCA Member!

How did that come to be? you may ask, because in order to be a member you need a Porsche VIN. So, did he buy a Porsche?

If so, which one? A 911, Cayman, Boxster, Panamera, Taycan, Macan or Cayenne?

Well, he bought a 911—but not just any 911. It all happened haphazardly and here’s the back story . . .

Earlier this year, in his capacity as Vice Chairman of Hendrick Motorsports and while overseeing the Hendrick Performance Track Attack at the Thermal Club in Southern California, Jeff Gordon got a chance to drive a Porsche Cup Car that Don Cusick (Cusick Motorsports) had just purchased. He enjoyed himself so much that he decided to buy one. What he didn’t know at the time was that in order to purchase a Porsche Cup Car you must agree to race it.

That’s when everything was set into motion. Jeff called his old friend

and crew chief, Ray Everham ,who immediately agreed to join him for a weekend in the second-year series in which neither one of them had any experience: The Porsche Carrera Cup. Jeff also got to run with his iconic number 24 on the side of his Porsche and they picked the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for this one-race comeback!

During the second Friday practice, as Jeff continued to learn the road course and the race car he was 23rd overall and 14th in class (Pro). He had only had one day of in-car testing at Carolina Motorsport Park and a lot of

iRacing (race simulation) as preparation for the weekend. On Saturday he placed 15th and on Sunday he improved to 11th

During interviews following the race, Jeff said: “All week I’ve been happy I am here, having a great time with Ray and the whole team. I must say that yesterday, I was getting beat out there, and I don’t like that. If I am going to be in an environment like this, I want to be competitive. But today turned the corner for me. So, I hope I get to do another one, one day.” The IMSA-sanctioned Porsche Carrera Cup is one of the most important one-make racing series today. This is so because the emphasis is placed solely on the driver’s skill, since every car competing is identical: same make, model and year, all equally prepared by the factory, all Spec 911 GT3 Cup Cars. Driver talent and team strategy are what will claim podiums. The Series is run in three classes: Pro, Pro-Am and Am.

The series is in its second year (2022) and has a fantastic schedule that includes many of North America’s iconic tracks:

Round 1: Sebring International Raceway, Sebring, FL.

Round 2: Grand Prix of Long Beach, Long Beach CA.

Round 3: Weathertech Raceway, Laguna Seca, Monterey, CA

Round 4: Watkins Glen International, Watkins Glen, NY

Round 5: Streets of Toronto, Toronto, ON Canada

Round 6: Road America, Elkhart Lake, WI

Round 7: Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis, IN

Round 8: Road Atlanta, Braselton, GA This year’s schedule is almost over, but if you get a chance, try to catch one or more races next year. The 2023 race calendar will be out soon.

Happy Porsche’ing, Pedro

Coffee in Wynwood

This photo of “Jellybean” was submitted by Patricia Walters, and it is a car that she and her husband, Captain Bob, both enjoy. The 1990 Porsche 944 S2 has been in the family for 12 of its 33 years. They bought it from John, Bob’s brother, who lives in California; they have had it in South Florida for almost a year. Patricia adds: “. . . and it has been so much fun!”

Wynwood is a popular spot that offers unique backdrops to photograph your Porsche. Jellybean’s Indischrot color really pops against the black and white mural. “Indischrot“ is German for Indian Red, also known as Guards Red, according to rennbow.org.

Patricia took this photo using an Olympus E-M1 camera with a 12-40 2.8mm pro lens.
