Escape to the Cape as of this writing is made, haveIDpreparations.intoteamandthearoundcornertheisdeepfinalbadgesbeen car show trophies have been ordered, t-shirts have arrived, a hospitality suite has been organized, car show registration documents have been printed, restaurants have been coordinated, and starting locations for each Region have been sited. And a small army of volunteers have been recruited. All I ask is that as you enjoy the event just remember that small army of people that came together so you can have a good time.

FIRST TURN

One of the biggest requirements for event planning is thinking months in advance. As an example, the Board of Directors has just locked in the venue for the 2022 Holiday Party. The location will be—drum roll, please— Margaritaville Resort in Hollywood, Florida, on December 3rd. The event theme will be “Holiday in Paradise” and dress will be resort casual.

Peter Olliviere, President

Here it is early August, and I’m thinking about the full schedule of events we have coming up through the rest of the year. The majority of our 3,000-plus members have no clue as to how much work and planning must go into the simplest of Club sponsored events. When an event is proposed it first must be approved by the Board of Directors. The Board is mainly interested in determining whether the event is possible in the first place. And secondly, whether it falls into the guidelines and framework that is established by PCA National. For example, could we hold an event of bull riding? The answer is no; our insurance would not insure it. Any event put on by Gold Coast Region must meet the guidelines established by Porsche Club of America and its insurance partners. Before final approval of the Board, a budget must be submitted outlining what the expenses will be for the event and what income is expected. When the budget is approved volunteers are assigned to the event committee with the job of pulling all the parts together. The committee must address things like, insurance, parking, cost of venue, number of people that can be accommodated, food, marketing, registration, and volunteers needed. Depending on the type of event several other items come into play. As you can see, for even the smallest event several things need to be accomplished for the event to be successful, but even with all the work we pushingkeep out great events. Why am I Becausethisbringingup? I am oftoyoubroughtareeventsteamdirectorsproudextremelyofourandthethatbeingtofromnowtheendtheyear.

Information about the event will start appearing as soon as the various aspects are locked in, so keep an eye out for information. We also have the New Members Picnic scheduled for September 17th, and Octoberfest scheduled for October 8th

All of this leads up to the Gold Coast Region 60th Anniversary Celebration. This will be a year-long celebration that will be recognized in just about every event in 2023, culminating in the gala event at the end of the year. The calendar is full—and this does not include our regular events such as Porsches and Pancakes, and the Thursday Night Socials. As you can see, we have a lot planned and every one of these events have had to go through the approval process mentioned earlier. So, as you enjoy these events, remember to put gas in the Porsche, and remember to thank the people that make all this possible. Peter

Christy Spangler, Social Chair

The social committee is working on events for the fall so stay tuned for upcoming announcements about these events via emails from the GCR “enews.” You can also check the calendar on the GCR website at goldcoastregion.org/calendar and on clubregistration.net for events and updates.

Roger Fabel, Editor I hope you had an enjoyable summer and were able to put some fun miles on your Porsche. The Kassette cover captures a group of PCA members preparing their cars for a Concours event. The question about this not so recent photo is, where was it taken? You can send your answer to the editor with a subject line of COVER. Now that I have your attention about the magazine cover, we receive the lowest number of photos from our members as possible cover submissions. The majority of photos are taken in landscape format, not portrait – and portrait is the preferred format for our cover. Most of our cover photos relate to our monthly articles. We also look for photographs of high resolution that will provide great art to the reader. With this knowledge, please consider some of your future photographs for the coverwe might just use them! We have been writing about the need for volunteers for the past few months. We’ve also explained how to participate in supporting the club. Many of our members who have been volunteering and working to support different events have decided to get more involved. Some of these members are participating in our 2022 GCR election. Board and Director position elections are held every two years. You may already know many of the candidates. Still, to help you learn more about them, we are publishing a “Notice of Election” and the Bios of each candidate. You will notice that we have a mixture of new members and members who have served the club for many years. The entire slate of candidates consists of members already serving in different roles and supporting the club. SUMMER WINE TASTING

By Christy Spangler, Social Chair

Organized by Kevin Jones On a warm Wednesday in mid-July, forty Gold Coast Region PCA members enjoyed a refreshing summer wine tasting. We were hosted by the Union Kitchen & Bar in Wilton Manors. The tasting included several fresh hors d’oeuvres that were selected and prepared to enhance the flavor and bouquet of the wine, and the evening.

Union Kitchen Managing Partner Roberto Columbi, a certified sommelier, or wine steward, poured a selection of five wonderful wines for the group. His wife, Chef/Owner Christie Tenaud, whom he met when they worked at a restaurant together, prepared and offered the unique appetizers. They joined lives and founded and operate the Union Kitchen & Bar. Their wine and food pairings were selected with care for our members to assess, evaluate, and most certainly to enjoy. The venue featured a spacious area within the Kitchen & Bar that commanded half of the indoor space. Additionally, the Porsche group was able to expand into an adjoining patio which was accessed through a set of opened French doors. The ambiance of the location, coupled with the wine and food pairings, made for a rich and pleasant evening. Members from around our Region, ranging from Port St. Lucie to Miami, came out to socialize and enjoy the tasting. Gold Coast Region offered a door prize raffle. Our winner was given a bottle of wine, their choice of those varieties and vintages sampled during the event, and two wine glasses. Congratulations to Iryna Rodionova, who won the raffle at the first GCR PCA event she attended. Iryna was accompanied by Jason Laffrey. Iryna and Jacob recently joined PCA and traveled from Miami to the event in Wilton Manors. After sampling the excellent food and wine, a number of Gold Coasters extended the evening by staying for a delicious dinner. Thank you to Kevin Jones for organizing this successful Porsche social gathering. We are looking forward to having you plan additional evenings in Dade and Palm Beach ShouldCounties.anyonebe interested, or wish to add a few of these wines to the home cellar, those we sampled were as follows: Spumante Millesimato Ca’ Delle Rose, Vento – Italy; Cinsault Rose Mont Gravet Pays D’oc – France; Berdicchio Cesaroni, Marche – Italy; Nero D’avola Ramisella – Sicily; and Cabernet Sauvignon Excelsior Robertson – South Africa. GCR GOES FULL LUMBERJACK

By Christy Spangler, Social Chair

Concurrently with active axe heaving, we enjoyed sandwiches and snacks brought from Publix. For liquids, soft drinks, beer, wine, and even mead were available. It was a singular kind of event. Some of the GCR participants did quite well—natural axe chuckers perhaps—while others not so much. The axes we generally threw were small, more hatchet-like. Later, the coaches allowed us to throw a longhandled axe just for fun. Needless to say, a good time was had by all. Thank you to Rick V. for organizing this unique event.

Organized by Rick Veingrad In a truly unique setting, and most likely a first-time event for everyone, GCR PCA took up a new sport at GAME OF AXES in Boca Raton. A total of thirty members of Gold Coast met in late July on the far western end of Palmetto Road to take aim and fling axes at wood targets. We arrived shortly before 11:00 am for our two-hour throwing party. Quickly signing liability waivers (required with good reason) and receiving demonstrations on safety and technique from two coaches, we split into three groups of ten. Each group was stationed in an axe throwing lane. The jocularity and axe tossing began forthwith. The coaches remained with the groups for some time to provide throwing tips and scorekeeping rules. While tossing axes may seem similar to darts—tossing a sharp object at a target—the similarity ends there. Throwing a short-handle axe requires refined technique and concentration. These axes are a bit heavier than a little bitty dart after all. Having some arm strength is helpful, but not required. Listening to the coach, the drill is: relax, look at the target, and follow through – easy? Not!

Christy earned her Bachelor’s at Jacksonville University and Master’s from East Tennessee State University. She is an engineering graphic designer and visual communicator and has specialized in technical and engineering for 20+ years. Art, science, engineering, and technology, inspires her creativity, curiosity, and desire to both continue learning and help others. It’s her education and work experience that’s given her the skill set necessary to be a strong, active, and heavily involved leader for PCA.

If you match people to jobs that they love, they excel, for example, our Social Chair, had to be convinced to take on the job, but once in it she has done a great job. Ian Gerada, Membership Chair is an outstanding addition to the Board. Ed Blair, Touring Chair, Rick Veingrad, Sponsorship Chair, Mark Johnson, DE Admin. All are doing terrific jobs for the Region, and I believe are among my greatest successes.

From those that a lot has been given, a lot is expected. And Gold Coast has given more to charity than ever before. Not only have we given through our regular recipients, Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, Nicholas Children’s Hospital and Ronald McDonalds House, but we addressed more direct giving community-based outreach. For the last two years we have given 400 Turkeys each year at Thanksgiving to the needy, followed by similar outreach with Christmas food baskets. Those efforts were recognized by PCA National with a third-place national award for Outstanding Service to the Community and Charity. The first time Gold Coast has been so recognized.

Election Bios - Officers

PETER OLLIVIERE for President Christy Spangler joined the PCA in 2001 and became active in 2005, volunteering and contributing to the Potomac Region newsletter. In 2012, Christy returned to Florida and transferred to the Gold Coast Region. She continued volunteering at various events and contributing to Die Porsche Kassette. She also hosted the popular Jazz-Blues Potluck Social for three years. In 2020, Christy was elected as a GCR Director, and she started the PCA GCR Goodie Store. She was appointed Social Chair in 2021 and has enthusiastically committed to the region’s events. Currently residing in Tamarac, Christy owns a 1985 944 that she enters in various PCA car shows and autocross events and a 2000 996 Carrera that she enjoys driving to social gatherings. Christy enjoys visiting different parts of the region, meeting and socializing with the members. Always ready to lend a hand to PCA, she has volunteered at Werks Reunion, Parade, Zone Fest, 48 Hours in Sebring, and various other PCA events.

When I became President, I immediately had to negotiate the creation of a new Region from what was the Northern part of Gold Coast original territory. I’m happy to say that although the birth of the Gulf Stream Region was not without its drama and pain, the net result has been a thriving sister Region to our North and a Gold Coast Region that is larger in membership and more vibrant than before the split. Those that preached disaster were wrong, and we can celebrate that.

If elected President of the Gold Coast Region, Christy Spangler would build upon the region’s successes and evolve them. She recognizes the need for more diverse activities and programs to engage the different interests of members. She is committed to supporting the team of Directors, Committee Chairs and our general membership while strengthening relationships with our sponsors to make Gold Coast Region a success.

I have been a Gold Coast Region member since 2000, and over those 22 years have served as Concourse Chair, Sponsorship Chair, Director, Vice President, and President.

Sep 2022 |

The 2002 Boxster soon made its arrival in 2013, and inspired Debi to acquire a 911 soon after. (If you are trying to keep track at home, that makes a total of 8 Porsches in the family at that moment!)

18 Die Porsche Kassette | Sep 2022 Porsches in her family? They’re everywhere!

Unfortunately Cara’s first Porsche, the ’02 Boxster, only lasted six months before the car was totaled. Being a Porsche family, everyone quickly took up a second search and found Cara a silver 2005 Boxster S. Uncle Brad upgraded the car with ceramic brake pads, a new radio, and painted the center console in silver to match the exterior. Cara was living in Missouri at the time and the ’05 Boxster was shipped from NC to MO.

After the drive with the senior Gibson, she was totally hooked on Porsche. With two uncles owning two Porsches, two grandparents with Porsches, and Cara’s mom, Debi, being a previous Porsche 912 owner, the entire family was quickly on the hunt for Cara’s first Porsche.

Cara Wolf’s family loves Porsches, lots of them! This long list includes parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts (well, they probably ride with the uncles or vice-versa), and even Cara’s boyfriend, who is becoming a Porsche Car enthusiast. Originally from North Carolina, Cara moved to Ft. Lauderdale in January this year. Her baby, a 2019 Boxster wrapped in a custom blue hue (similar to Miami Blue), came with her. Leaving North Carolina for South Florida in January 2022; we need not wonder why. Cara’s Porsche affinity started with a grey 2002 Boxster when she was in college. This was shortly after several family members had purchased Porsches, a family trend inspired by her uncle Mark and his 993. Visiting home one summer break, her other Porsche-owning uncle, Brad, allowed her to get behind the wheel of his Boxster. It was that drive that started it all. After this first spin at the wheel, Cara talked her way into the driver’s seat of her grandfather Jim Gibson’s first of several Porsches, a 911. She suggests that this memory is probably one of the fondest in her Porsche Thishistory.was only her second time at the steering wheel piloting a Porsche. She clearly remembers grandpa exclaiming, “What are you doing shifting so soon? You gotta get it up to at least 6,000 RPM before you shift!” And then Grandpa Gibson added, “Why are you slowing down? You never slow down in a turn, that’s when you give it more gas!” Gramps obviously understood the skill it takes to command a Porsche 911, and Cara was learning fast.

FINDING GOLD

As luck and fate would have it, mere months after receiving the silver ’05 Boxster Cara was rear-ended by a small pickup truck traveling at 30 mph. It had been a glorious and beautiful day to drive, then bang! A second Cara Wolf Boxster totaled through no fault of her own. Just being in the wrong place at the wrong time; two great cars lost to inattentive drivers.

CARA WOLF

Grandpa’s 911 andMember912 Feature by Mark Johnson

The

Boxster

While Cara was driving the Passat, cousin Grant drove a Boxster, brother John owned a 944 and her dad, Bill, finally joined the Porsche club with the Cayenne in 2016. It was during the fall of 2018 that Cara’s many Porscheowning family members attended Oktoberfest with their respective Porsches. Without a Porsche Cara was left out and immediately she “wanted back in”! With her mom’s car-finding talent, a 2007 Boxster was located at a small NC Ford dealership. It was yet another grey exterior, but this one had a tan interior. Cara was not originally excited about the color combination, but her mom was. Off they went together, not clothing or jewelry shopping, but “car shopping.”

The car is truly an exceptional vehicle; Loading up for Octoberfest in 2018 2019 718

fresh from “wrapping”

Cara took a break from Porsches, perhaps fearing the loss of a third; she simply did not want that experience again. A VW Passat was bought for transportation. Although the car was certainly not nearly as exciting or enjoyable as a Porsche, she drove the Passat for the next four years. As with a sweet siren song, the Porsche passion kept calling her and her family members to have Ms. Wolf back in the fold.

The ’07 Boxster 987.1 was a real looker in person. They examined everything, then eventually started it. Hearing the exhaust note, a quick glance was exchanged to which both Cara and mom simply said, “It has a nice growl,” Cara knew absolutely that she would not leave the Ford store without this Porsche. She drove the ‘07 Boxster for two years, and its story did not end with bang, crash, or total–fortunately. However, the Boxster did require a substantial amount of maintenance, uncommon for the brand. Following a round trip to Key West from NC it was determined that this ’07 would be replaced by a newer model. Dad found the next one. Yay, Dad! Support from the Gibson-Wolf clan is immeasurable; we should all be so Thefortunate.’19Boxster 718 was unwrapped in pristine condition. It was grey with black interior and a six-speed manual transmission. It was acquired with less than 1,000 miles on the ODO in 2021. It is the fourth Boxster for Ms. Wolf, each one of them a varied shade of grey. Not wishing to drive yet another grey Boxster, Cara had the car fully wrapped in the Miami Blue hue to take a personal break from the past three monochrome Boxsters. It was time for a change and Miami Blue in Florida is a natural.

20 Die Porsche Kassette | Sep 2022 Cara enjoys everything she does with this 718—from driving to detailing, looking at it, and talking to anyone and everyone who is willing to listen. Cara has been a PCA member since 2012 when the ’02 Boxster was first acquired. Her membership was transferred to Gold Coast Region in January 2022 commensurate with the move to Florida. She attends multiple cars & coffee meetings and as many PCA events as time allows, either accompanied by her dog or her boyfriend, Blake. Driving the car is the best. Living in North Carolina there are almost limitless different two-lane roads of curvy nature to enjoy. Cara would frequently solo these and the many back country opportunities to savor the acceleration, handling, and joyous driving of the mid-engine Porsche. Arriving in South Florida, she found the roads aren’t quite as thrilling, and she has to borrow a driveway for her detailing efforts. Yet the South Florida Porsche community offers an abundance of PCar happy hour meets and Sinceevents.being south she has made a few trips down through the Keys, and an Everglades tour (with straight roads and a bit slower speed, so it’s about the scenery). This fall the plan will be to get back north to western NC and visit the Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, and the many exceptional twisties in the area. Top-down Boxster driving in western NC during the fall is special! Cara also owns a 2016 Cayenne in white. She likes horses to go with her Porsches, and the Cayenne is a super vehicle for towing the ponies. The Cayenne was purchased from her dad late last year. He owned the Cayenne for roughly four years before selling it to his daughter. The Cayenne replaced a RAM 3500 that was used on the farm, which Cara sold, prior to the move to Florida. With no need to own the RAM, she finds that the Cayenne is a much better and substantially more fun choice as a tow vehicle. For the record, Blake currently owns a Mercedes G-Wagon; however he is most often sporting around in Cara’s Cayenne for its practicality and Besidesversatility.her love of driving her favorite marque, Cara works as an independent travel agent, booking trips for a group of clients and variety of suppliers all over the world. She books her own travel of course, the best part of her job. Her favorite Porsche model? Any of the Spyders. Briefly obsessed with the Spyder, she almost pulled the trigger and purchased one a few years ago, but the timing wasn’t right. Zeroing in on the Spyder, Boxster/Cayman it is the 987 model she favors. As for the Gibson-Wolf family they count 24 Porsches owned at one time or another. The current family inventory includes 11 Porsche vehicles. This number does not include an allocation for yet another new 911. It started with Debi Wolf (mom) and her 1968 912, followed by Uncle Mark Gibson, Karen and Jim Gibson (her grandparents), Uncle Brad, cousin Grant Gibson, Bill Wolf (dad), John Wolf (brother), Janelle Huey (aunt), and Uncle Jim Wolf. We’d love to list each Porsche by family member, but we simply don’t have room! Notably, all the 911s, 912s, and Boxsters have been manual transmission. THEY ARE DRIVEN! On a personal note, I am a 53-year resident of South Florida. I grew up in Hollywood and currently reside in Cooper City. My wife Dawn and I have two terrific sons; Brian who is currently a third-year medical school student and Scott is a computer programmer living in Tampa. Professionally, most of my career was spent in the petroleum industry. Along the way I have owned a candy store in the Aventura mall, a private investigative firm, and currently I own a building inspection firm, hold a real estate license, and I am a property investor. I have served as the Chairman of the Broward County Local Advocacy Council working for the rights and protections of people within state care. I also volunteer some my time with the Dania Lions club.

ED BLAIR for Director MIKE DEL POZO for Director Mike Del Pozo is the owner of DP Window Cleaning. He has been a proud member of PCA Gold Coast Region for 2-1/2 years, joining only a month after purchasing his Porsche Boxster. Mike has been involved with the Club from the onset, attending and volunteering at a number of events. While attending these events, Mike saw a need for a Thursday Night Social for the northwest end of Broward. He secured a new venue, The Country Club of Coral Springs, which is enjoying great success. This past May, Mike also organized and chaired the first annual GCR Charity Golf Tournament, raising $5,000 for the Memorial Cancer Institute. Because of his involvement, he was named the PCA GCR Rookie of the Year for 2021.   Mike is very involved in Coral Springs, the city he lives in. He has served as a Chair or Co-chair on a number of committees including the Government Affairs and the Education Committees. Mike is also on the committee for the Annual Coral Springs Festival of the Arts and has played the part of Santa Claus for the past six years for the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce’s annual toy drive, delivering toys to children at Broward Health Coral Springs. Last year, Mike was elected to a four-year term by city commissioners to serve on the city’s Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). In 2015, Mike was the Recipient of the Coral Springs Chamber of Commerce Small Business Leader Award.   Mike is a veteran and before DP Window Cleaning, he was in law enforcement for 20+ years, where in 2007 was awarded the Florida Medal of Valor. He enjoys reading history books and playing golf. Mike and his wife Leslie have two children, Christina (20) and Andrew (18) and have been Coral Springs residents for over 27 years.

I have happily been a Gold Coast Region / PCA member since acquiring my first Porsche, a 2014 Boxster, in early 2017. As of 2020 I traded the Boxster for a 2018 Carrera S and could not be happier. However, I do miss the Boxster. As many of you know I am currently on the Gold Coast board and serve as a director. I also organize our yearly trip to the North Carolina mountains. There has been one trip to Mount Dora, which I also arranged. Some of you will also find me assisting with the Escape to the Cape this year. I hope to continue to serve on the board and work with other members to come up with more diverse trips and adventures in the coming years.

Ian runs a digital marketing company called Connectica which actively supports the Gold Coast Region club by advertising in Die Kassette and contributing to various sponsorship opportunities at Gold Coast Region events.  He enjoys volunteering and attending the various events our club has to offer and hopes to see you at one of the upcoming events.

Ian Gerada has been a Porsche enthusiast for as long as he can remember. He finally bought his first Porsche in 2012 and joined the PCA/Gold Coast Region in 2013.  Ian loves getting involved with any project he puts his mind to and this has been no different since joining PCA/Gold Coast Region.

Ian is a current Board Member and serves as the Membership Chair ensuring that our members are kept up to date on all our exciting events and news.  He also serves as the Social Media Chair and manages our Facebook Page and Facebook Group as well as our new Instagram profile.  Ian is also the Webmaster for both goldcoastregion.org and zone12.pca. org websites and enjoys serving on the PCA Region Website Committee.

IAN GERADA for Director MARK JOHNSON for Director Mark Johnson has been involved with sports cars since his first vehicle, a 1970 MG Midget. A second British sportscar immediately followed; a 1974 Triumph TR6, purchased new. A race fan from early days he attended quarter midget racing watching Indy drivers mix it up on a ¼-mile dirt track. With age the quality of racing improved attending events at Road America. Mark holds BA in Chemistry from Lewis University in Lockport, IL. Moving to Florida in 1976, he worked with the Florida Department of Environmental Regulation in Tallahassee and then US EPA Region IV for a combined 9 years, monitoring the surface water quality and standards. Changing careers in Atlanta, Mark moved to automotive sales in 1985 starting at a Toyota dealership. In 1987 he joined the Toyota operations in Deerfield Beach, Southeast Toyota Distributors (SET), as a Regional Fleet Sales Manager. With SET Fleet, Mark successfully enjoyed a 33+ year career, selling nearly 500,000 Toyota Fleet vehicles to commercial accounts, rental companies, and government entities. He retired in January 2021. In June 2019 Mark acquired his first Porsche, a 1995 911 Carrera Cabrio in triple black. He immediately joined GCR PCA. He added to his Porsche garage purchasing a Cayman in December 2020. Mark has been active in GCR as a Staff Writer for the Kassette, contributing a regular monthly feature “Finding Gold”. Additional contributions have been made about the 48 Hours at Sebring, Sebring racing, and various Club events. Recently, Mark was asked to support GCR by accepting duties related to our Drivers Education program. Mark is conducting a full study of the program, administration and contracts, and the overall viability of our DE operation. Mark brings organizational and professional skills, enthusiasm, and a simple joy of automobiles, especially Porsche, to our great PCA Region.

Mike would appreciate the opportunity to continue to serve as a Gold Coast Region Director, to help us maintain a fun club that encourages member participation and volunteerism, car education, enthusiasm and giving back to our communities as well.

MIKE KOLLER for Director

It is hard for Andrew to remember precisely when his passion for Porsche began. It quite possibly started in the womb. He has always been a fan of Porsche for its heritage, craftsmanship, engineering, and the like. He is a lifelong race fan, including everything from dirt racing to classic 1980s-era IMSA racing up to current racing at LeMans and Formula One.

ANDREW MOFFITT for Director

Andrew Moffitt, PCA Gold Coast Region member since 2019 and long-time Porsche enthusiast, has been proud to be an active member of his local Porsche social club. In his professional life, he is the Chief Technology Officer for a local software development company. He has nearly 30 years of technical, security, and operational experience – almost 20 years with the same company.

Andrew and his wife AJ have been actively participating in PCA events since joining the club. In February 2022, they also joined the staff for the Die Porsche Kassette, the monthly Gold Coast Region publication, as writers and photographers. This involvement has enabled them to take part in various club activities as both participants and volunteers and to share their knowledge of the club. It has also given Andrew a deeper understanding of what it takes to regularly put on the amazing activities that the club hosts.

At this time, Andrew is thrilled to have this opportunity to run for a Director position for the PCA Gold Coast Region.

Andrew hopes he will be elected to be an integral team member that helps continue the improvement of our great PCA region.

Andrew realized a lifelong dream when he acquired his first Porsche, a 981-era Boxster, in 2019. A few years later, he and his wife also purchased a new Macan, and most recently, a classic 944 has joined the garage.

26 Die Porsche Kassette | Sep 2022

He’s been a PCA member for 30 years and loves living and working in south Florida. He contributes his time, efforts and ideas to help make the club as active and enjoyable as possible. He started out in PCA by attending social events and autocrosses, as well as the occasional DE. His first Porsche was an ’84 944, and he bought his first 911 in ’95 (and it’s still in his garage today). Over the past few years, he’s been fortunate to be able to attend and experience all types of PCA events across Florida and the southeast. Even during the challenges of the past few years, he remained active in Gold Coast social and driving activities, and assisted with as many events as possible. He hopes to continue to work on a variety of fun events and be able to get more people to enjoy volunteering.

This PCA multi-regional event attracts over 300 members to Southwest Florida each year. This event includes a drive, charitable raffle, car show, and tech talks. In addition, I negotiated with the hotel special PCA rates with the hotel for our members, selling out the hotel.

Sep 2022 | Die Porsche Kassette 29

After our summer break the GCR Autocross series will resume on Saturday, September 10th at Sebring. This will be event #6 in what we hope to be a 7-event series for 2022. I hope all our regulars and those wishing to learn AX will sign up on clubregistration.net. Remember, we have one on the most user-friendly AX programs for newcomers. Now for this month’s special AX feature, I would like to look back and share some of the AX history over the last 20-plus years and our biggest challenges in continuing an AutoX program: locating AX sites. Autocross sites seem to be the biggest obstacle in regions starting new AX programs and continuing a program, should a site become unavailable. Here is summary of some of the sites used in the past and the current status of these Currentlysites.our main AX site is the Sebring Racetrack skid pad. For the last 5 years this is where the majority of GCR AX events have been held, and we owe a huge thanks to Suncoast Region for allowing us to use the skid pad when they have a DE at Sebring.

The main drawback to this site is the distance from Dade / Broward, which is about 2 to 3 hours each way.

Looking back a little further, most everyone who has been autocrossing a while remembers the 10-year span we had at the BBT Center parking lot in Sunrise. This site was large, very popular, centrally located, and it was easy to run events there. Courses were set up to run clockwise one month then counterclockwise the next month, and runs usually were 60+ seconds for the faster cars. Other than having to control onlookers who wandered over from the Sawgrass Mills Mall, this site was great until the repaving project. The new asphalt/sealcoat at the site put an end to management’s willingness to rent the site for close to 3 years. When the issue was finally revisited after months of attempts, the officials doubled the price, asked we pay a security deposit equal to the lot rent (something we have never been requested to do previously), and sign Steve raincourseworksinorshine

The History of GCR Autocross Sites

AROUND THE

Steve Kidd, Autocross Chair

Other site options involved doing events with other PCA regions. Probably the most notable were a few joint events we held with Everglades Region at the Buckingham Airport in Lehigh Acres. Distance-wise, it’s about the same as to Sebring: 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on where in SE Florida you are coming from. This is the home AX site for Gulf Coast Autocrossers, and one of my all-time favorite sites. What’s not to like about a half-mile long concrete runway, plenty of room, and fantastic course design options? Getting a date there is nearly impossible for any organization that is not established within the hierarchy of government agencies and SW Florida clubs that have first dibs on available dates.

30 Die Porsche Kassette | Sep 2022

Other than the distance, this is a great venue and Suncoast Region offers a track tour at midday (in conjunction with their DE), lots of AX runs, and a very easy-to-design course that has proven to be very safe and easy to coordinate with our friends at Suncoast Region. Also used recently was the go-cart track at Palm Beach International Racetrack (PBIR.) We have used this site several times in the past, and it has proven to be another popular venue and easy to set up as a course. Unfortunately, the track has been sold, and it looks like any type of motorsports events are not in the future. Rumor has it that the site is slated to become a distribution center/warehouse complex. Another site that was used pre-COVID was parking lot #5 at FAU in Boca. This lot was turned into a COVID testing site during the peak of COVID, and remains a possibility for the future, especially if there is a reduced need for COVID testing locations. FAU was one of the easiest governmental agencies to deal with, and the lot rental price was very reasonable. The site was small and course design challenging, but very doable. Hopefully we can return there in late 2022 or early 2023.

If you can help us find that new AX site, please call Team AX: Steve Kidd at 954-292-3915 or Dottie Kidd at 954 562 5919

Thisorganizations!isapartial list of AX sites, and does not include a few that are currently still in the works. Hopefully one of the sites in the works will partner with us for a long-term arrangement such as we had with BBT. Back in the “good old days” securing a site was not a difficult sell. Property managers were happy to make anywhere between a few hundred to a few thousand bucks to rent a parking lot for a day. Times have changed, and hopefully, with someone’s help, we can find an appropriate site that is an hour or less from the core area of Gold Coast Region. run in all weather

Sep 2022 | Die Porsche Kassette 31 a new contract that, as we interpreted it, made GCR responsible for any damage including but not limited to tire marks. The new package proved to be unworkable and as one observer pointed out, it “looked like their way of saying NO.” Prior to BBT, another site that proved to be very popular was Hialeah Park Horse Track in North Miami. There were several lots available, and GCR along with several other car clubs generally used the long skinny easternmost lot that seemed to work best, sort of like a mini-Buckingham Airport. This site was used until casino gambling came along and the organization wanted all available parking spots for their new gambling customers. The same can be said for a number of other former sites such as Dania Jai Alai, Hollywood Dog track, Gulfstream Park, and Pompano Harness Track, to name a few. Other sites such as the former Hollywood Fashion Mall have been redeveloped. Other sites (and the list is long) have said no, don’t return calls, or have proved to be unworkable for a number of reasons. Other possible sites, such as those run or overseen by governmental agencies, make the process so difficult and timeconsuming that it feels like submitting an RFP, and requires approval by a commission body, planning board or other organizations such as the FAA. Looks like we need a full-time grant writer or lobbyist to make productive contact with some of these
