GGR GROUP, NO.1 FOR LIFTING SOLUTIONS, HAS ANNOUNCED THE LAUNCH OF THEIR NEW MULTI LOADER WEBSITE FOR THE SALE OF TRACKED CARRIERS AND TRACKED LEVELLERS.

This new brand came with the recent increasing demand for Multi Loader products in the industry. Versatile and designed for transporting loads on job sites this product has proved an asset to both everyday and unique projects.

Originally introduced to GGR Group’s extensive fleet in 2018 the Multi Loader is representative of GGR’s eye for innovation and a product’s potential in construction. Officially partnering with AlmaCrawler in 2021 GGR Group became the UK dealer partner for the Material Handling Multi-Loader Line. Through years of hiring in the region, Multi Loaders have become essential to any job site handling heavy materials.

The launch of the Multi Loader website was the natural next step as a lifting specialist aiming to bring innovative and valuable products to the UK market.

By bringing a spotlight to the Multi Loaders on a separate website their use can be highlighted as an essential partner for working alongside plant machinery as well as their efficacy independently.

With the fresh and user-friendly design of the Multi Loader website, there are products not previouly seen on the GGR Group Tracked Carriers page. You will see the addition of the Multi Loader 3.0 Tracked Leveller, the T-Crane 1060, and Multi Loader 3.0 FX attachments such as a Multiframe and Dumper Kit.

Daniel Ezzatvar, Marketing and Special Products Director at GGR Group, said: “The launch of the new Multi Loader website comes at an exciting time when tracked carriers and tracked levellers have taken the construction industry by storm. This unique piece of technology offers a way for users to safely transport materials across rough terrain and

inclines but is still suitable for indoor lifts due to the Multi Loader’s low ground bearing pressure and producing zero emissions.

“This project is a collaboration of efforts from the marketing team who really have a passion for innovation and what it means for the industry as a whole. The products on this new site will hopefully pave the way for more practical and safer material handling throughout the UK. We also hope to develop more uses for these already multifunctional machines in the years to come.”

MACHINE CONTROL HALVES SUDS POND COMPLETION TIME

Working with connected site specialist SITECH® UK and Ireland, Caledonia Water Alliance (CWA) has been able to complete a sustainable drainage pond for Scottish Water in half the time using Trimble® machine control systems.

The British Metals Recycling AsThe project near Glasgow is the first SUDs system the team at CWA has worked on, and forms part of a six-year infrastructure investment program by Scottish Water to alleviate flooding and carry out upgrades throughout Scotland. It is also the firsttime CWA has used machine technology, trialling it on this project to assess how it could improve efficiency, productivity, and site safety.

SITECH, who provide tailored hardware, software, and training in Trimble technology, provided on-site calibration, base station set up and ongoing project support to CWA.

CWA Construction Manager Robert Borland said: “The increased safety and efficiency the Trimble technology brings has opened people’s eyes within the business to the benefits of using machine control.

“As a former machine operator, I’ve used GPS on projects before, so I knew it was the right choice for this site where we needed to dig a big hole in a very tight space that was also on a slope. Any overcut or requirement to re-dig would be challenging to remedy and have a big impact on extending the timescale of the project.

“This area in Glasgow was on the flood register as being a combined sewer stormwater run through.

However, the sewer didn’t have capacity to cope with anymore water, which was coming up from the manholes. Our job was to split the pipelines and channel the stormwater into this holding pond before it can be discharged into the canal.

“Our relationship with SITECH has been great throughout the scheme and the feedback from our leadership team and operators has been extremely positive.”

While it was originally estimated that digging the pond would take around four weeks, with machine technology the team from CWA were able to complete it in just two weeks minimising disruption to the local area and nearby residents.

Robert adds: “We hired two different sized excavators from Blackwood Plant Hire and the team from SITECH ensured the kit was calibrated correctly for both. If we had dug this pond out without the assistance of machine technology, it would have required three men on site working with the machine. Using the Trimble GPS system therefore has radically improved the efficiency of carrying out this part of the project, and has the advantage of improved site safety, with no engineers required near the heavy equipment during operation.

“We had a banksman, but he was 20 metres away reversing wagons to the excavator. There was no one in the excavation itself putting string lines on batter rails because the machine was digging to the model on the Trimble® Earthworks system so that was a big positive from our team.”

The site will be further enhanced with aquatic plants and tree planting around

the area by Scottish water to help improve the local environment.

SITECH regional sales consultant Liam Payne explained: “We’re delighted this project has gone so well with CWA, as while initially there can be concerns about the cost of renting machine control systems, this SUDs system shows how much it can deliver in terms of increased efficiency and safety.

“Our team ensured we provided support to get CWA up and running from the moment their machines arrived and continued to assist them, so everything ran as smoothly as possible. Now they’ve experienced the efficiency, safety and reduced carbon footprint Trimble technology can offer we’re confident we’ll be working with them again very soon.”

Last year marked the first ever NFB Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Awards. It was the start of real change for the industry, showcasing women in the sector to make female and nonbinary role models more visible and accessible. Its purpose was to make the change and build construction as more inclusive together with plugging the skills gap.

For the second year running, Balfour BFollowing on from the success of the first awards in 2022, the NFB have brought the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Awards back for 2023. The categories for this year include Local Heroes, Influential List, Allies, One to Watch, and Woman on the Tools.

Bethany Holroyd, UK Health and Safety Business Partner at WSP in the UK and North East Unsung Hero winner of 2022, comments; “Following the awards last year, I have made so many new connections, of which several have become not only business connections but great friends too. Everyone I met was genuinely inspiring - and we all regularly connect with each other almost a year later!”

The NFB also offers the Top 100 Legacy Programme, a year-long programme of training and support available to those that have nominated or been nominated which includes mentoring, virtual and in-person networking events, master classes, pathway support, and much more.

This program offers guidance in cultivating a personal brand, utilising expert social media advice and training. It helps people to define clear goals, strategise actionable steps to achieve them, overcome imposter syndrome

and self-limiting beliefs, and builds confidence in conversations with others.

“Since this programme I have done TV, radio, podcasts, internal TV and photographed more times than ever before! Which, as someone who is always behind the camera by choice, is a massive step!” Gail Farley, Head of Customer Experience at HMS Works and nominee of the 2023 Awards.

The National Federation of Builders (NFB) represents builders, contractors and house builders across England and Wales. As one of the UK’s longest standing trade bodies, it was created to represent the building profession and to promote conditions its members need to thrive and contribute to the economic success of the UK.

Positive representation can motivate and inspire the next generation of female workers to pursue construction-related careers. When young girls and women see successful female role models in construction, they’ll be more likely to consider careers in the industry. Awards like these contribute to the advancement of the industry by recognising diverse talent and encouraging new perspectives.

Siu Mun Li from Multiplex Construction Europe, who has been an Awards nominee both years, has some advice for anyone thinking about getting involved in the programme; “Don’t just consider it, go ahead, take the plunge and get involved. It’s an opportunity to develop both professionally and personally whilst meeting amazing, inspirational and very supportive people along the way. Be part of something bigger, get involved and help steer the construction industry to where it needs to be. The NFB and the legacy programme don’t just talk the talk, they walk the walk so

be part of the change you want to see.”

The NFB also hosts Construction Awards of Excellence which are highly prized awards, recognising individual and team excellence. The awards are truly independent, owned by the sector for the sector, across all of the British Isles, designed to recognise those individuals and companies that set the gold standard in the construction sector.

Danny Clarke, Commercial Director for the National Federation of Builders comments; “We launched the Top 100 Most Influential Women in Construction Awards last year in order to celebrate the amazing women and their allies that are doing wonderful things throughout the Industry. Whilst it’s undeniable that we need to bring more females into the industry, we also need to recognise the amazing people we have already working within it.

Unlike many influential lists that focus purely on senior individuals, the NFB’s Top 100 Women in Construction is fully inclusive and crucially showcases all the role models in our industry from Trainees and Apprentices right the way through to the boardroom.

Our Legacy programme also helps to support individuals to develop skills necessary to make the change and lead our industry in the years to come, showcasing what’s possible for people within our wonderful industry.”

GEM PLANT SALES SUPPLIES

A VERY SPECIALIST WACKER

NEUSON EW65 WHEELED EXCAVATOR TO THE UPPER MEDWAY INTERNAL DRAINAGE BOARD

GEM Plant Sales, a long-established construction plant and equipment supplier based in Kent, has delivered a very specialist Wacker Neuson wheeled excavator to The Upper Medway Internal Drainage Board. This customised EW65 will be involved in some pioneering works on watercourses this summer.

The Upper Medway IDB is a statutory body set out under the Land Drainage Act to ensure adequate drainage and water management within set districts around the country’s main river catchments. The Board, comprising elected landowners and appointed councillors, is tasked with the oversight and control of ordinary watercourses that lead to the main rivers which are then controlled on their behalf by the Environment Agency.

While conventional tooling is used for maintenance work across its network, a specialist machine is required by The Upper Medway IDB to carry out tasks such as weed clearance and desilting operations, while also being suitable for both on and offroad use, given that travelling can be involved as well as roadside working operations.

Typically, a large, tracked machine would be used to carry out these tasks. While they represent a vital and effective tool, they are naturally confined to site and often can’t provide high efficiency, especially given the Board’s geographical spread of watercourses. The decision was taken to seek a more flexible tool for its major excavator works, which led to the use of a wheeled excavator.

The requirement was for a smaller profile machine, with large reach, and a double- jointed boom section, which while being more compact in size, did not compromise the ability to reach far sides of the banks.

In 2022 the Board’s Works Supervisor, John Davis, began speaking with GEM Plant Sales about what Wacker Neuson could offer and was immediately impressed with the build quality, backup support, technological and technical scope, and the attention to detail from both the manufacturer and Graham Mortimore, the founder of GEM Plant Sales.

After several site visits to the see both the larger wheeled offerings and the tracked variants, it was decided on the 6.5 tonne wheeled excavator with a double boom, extended dipper, and additional STEELWRIST omni-hitch.

FOR FURTHER INFORMATION

For more information on the Wacker Neuson Product Range including this machine please contact: Tel: 01622-910074 email: sales@gemplant.co.uk

To compliment the bespoke machine, the Board also requested several unusual implements which led it to conversations with West Country attachment specialist, EXAC-ONE. They were able to provide a menu of specialist arborist and pioneering equipment to suit the Wacker Neuson. After demonstrations at their site in Swindon, the Board also opted for the tree shear and the mulcher head.

The tree sheer can cut up to 300mm and retain cuttings using a unique gripping arm. The mulcher head features a fixed teeth drum that activates on the use of the rotational circuit, allowing for high impact debris and brash clearance and excellent control during minor tree grinding.

Completing the order was a 2m Bradshaw type bucket from FLAILS DIRECT to allow for weed and reed clearance works to be carried out. Due to the system requirements of the bucket however, additional low flow circuits had to be installed, representing a technical challenge to the build as it required multiple settings, hook-ups, and limiters.

With the knowledgeable support of the team at GEM, they were able to install a system that allows this vital piece of equipment to not only be used but to be easily swapped out and changed depending on the tasks at hand.

Commenting on behalf of the Board, Oliver Pantrey said: “The machine will see its first outing on the watercourses this summer and the Board would like to thank John, Graham, the staff at GEM PLANT SALES, WACKER NEUSON, Andrew and Doug at EXAC-One, FLAILS DIRECT, and the team at STEELWRIST for their expertise, patience, and quality service to deliver this incredibly diverse product.”

RUST PREVENTION!

AVOID THE CORROSION ATTACK AND SAVE TIME & MONEY

Rust is one of the most damaging phenomena that can happen to our vehicles, equipment and machinery. Rust is the result of a natural process where the iron in metals encounters oxygen and water, causing it to corrode and deteriorate.

It is not just unattractive to look at, it also causes metal to decay, becoming flaky and weak. This means metals are transformed from being one of the strongest materials on earth to one of the weakest. It can also create brittleness, causing the metal to break under the pressure of operation which intern results in both costly failures as well as a safety risk to users.

Repairs due to rust and ultimate replacement of components, can be

expensive. In some cases, the rusty component may be entirely unusable, meaning costly new parts and machinery must be purchased. Help is at hand though – as lubricant manufacturers the Witham Group knows a thing or two about oils and lubrication and keeping machinery and vehicles operating to maximum performance.

Witham Group has launched a new range of rust prevention products for a variety of applications – including the latest leading biodegradable options made from unique non-toxic and noncarcinogenic ingredients. These products are the ideal essential for any vehicle workshop, offering a variety of savings with some easy maintenance tips.

VEHICLE CHASSIS

Water, mud and salts from roads will corrode a vehicle’s undercarriage if it is not properly protected. Corrosive damage will weaken the vehicle’s structural integrity over time, making it extremely dangerous for drivers and their passengers, particularly if a road accident occurs. In winter, when roads are regularly salted and gritted, vehicles are even more susceptible to corrosion and rusting from the severe conditions.

Witham Group has recently launched its ‘Prolan Extreme Grade Lubricant’ as part of its impressive rust prevention range of lubricants, which is a powerful natural rust preventer on a daily driven vehicle and machinery under pressure from tough operating conditions. Acting as an impressive cavity wax, it can even be cold pressure washed without removing the coating itself. This product was recently described as “Nature’s Secret Weapon” by a customer and has won awards at many industry levels. Witham Prolan is a high performing, biodegradable lubricant made from lanolin found in sheep’s wool.

SPARE WHEELS

Rust and corrosion can often seize up the mechanism holding the spare wheel on vehicles as many are located on the rear or underneath, making it impossible to remove. This can be avoided by applying either the long lasting Witham Prolan Medium Grade Lubricant or Prolan Extreme Grade Lubricant to the nuts and bolts of any vehicle as part of its ongoing maintenance.

18 august 2023 PLANT PLANET news witham group

Witham also offers a solvent water displacing corrosion inhibitor – Qualube Rustarest – which provides long term protection to all metals and surfaces and is particularly useful to cover outdoor storage areas, protecting against rust with its excellent water repelling properties.

RUST PREVENTION SAVES TIME AND COST FOR AGRICULTURAL & OFF ROAD MACHINERY

Agricultural machinery and plant and off-road vehicles are often exposed to many elements, tough conditions and highly corrosive chemicals. Using Witham Prolan Medium Grade Lubricant in aerosol spray throughout the year will ensure complete protection to all working parts, including rear hydraulic pipes and rear linkage components.

Towing trailers, diggers, transporters and every type of work horse vehicle can also last so much longer if simple maintenance is carried out.

ELECTRICAL COMPONENTS

Often missed, batteries and electrical components on vehicles are susceptible to corrosion from moisture and dirt. A lubricant spray such as Witham Prolan Medium Grade Lubricant aerosol is easy to apply and is kind to sensitive electrical wiring systems. Some lubricant products can attack and break down the old insulation wires so using Prolan Medium Grade Lubricant which is non-conductive and incredibly long lasting is really worthwhile.

Witham Group MD Nigel Bottom comments:

“As a long-standing manufacturer of lubricants and greases, we understand the importance of protecting equipment and vehicles from corrosion and avoiding costly breakdowns. Our expertise in the plant and off-road sector as well as agriculture and commercial vehicles is second to none and we are proud to offer a range of rust prevention products suitable for just about every type of application, including our award winning, food safe and biodegradable Prolan range of rust preventative products, which have been reviewed with outstanding results and are of the highest quality.”

REMEMBER TO PROTECT ALL YOUR PREMISES & EVERY TYPE OF EQUIPMENT

Corrosion and rust on chainsaw blades, lawnmowers decks and hedge cutters can not only stop the mechanics working but can also be a safety hazard, as the metal parts corrode and breakdown. Regular maintenance with quality and easy to use products such as Witham Multi-Ease Spray or Prolan Light Grade Lubricant or Prolan Lubricant, help ensure smooth operation and more accurate precision.

There are many other everyday items, such as bike chains, chain locks, gears, key locks, door hinges, folding ramps and gates, that the build-up of corrosion and rust causes problems for. If untreated, the unsightly appearance, creaking and ultimately seizing up will cause issues. Keep all your equipment safe, lasting longer and in tip top condition and see how Witham’s lubricant expertise and award winning range of rust prevention products can help your business.

THE NATIONAL DRAINAGE SHOW, WATERWAYS MANAGEMENT SHOW AND FLOODEX WILL RUN AGAIN, AT EXCEL LONDON,

ON 22ND & 23RD NOVEMBER

The show is gaining far more traction and now, with the support of Canal & River Trust, for the Waterways Management Show, this opens up all kinds of possibilities.

The response to the 2022 event has been fantastic, with many companies rebooking their space and a big increase in new companies enquiring about exhibiting and sponsorship.

The event ties in with the NADC’s National Drainage Awards and the organizers of the National Drainage Show are the Wine Sponsor.

Waterways Management Show, alongside the Drainage Show offers great opportunities to those who manufacture, sell and hire plant and equipment, designed for working on the land and banksides of our waterways, as well as urban drainage projects, from hedge trimmers to excavators.

Canal & River Trust Property Development

By taking an active role, the property development team champions sympathetic yet contemporary waterside development, involving both residential and commercial schemes. The income they generate from this goes straight to help maintain the historic waterways, enhance local environments and reinvigorate the canal and river network.

The Trust will have a major presence, with a working model, on the show floor.

Today they are involved in over £11 billion of waterside regeneration projects nationwide, reinvesting the profits from these schemes to help fund the waterways for future generations.

Canal & River Trust is a major land owner with a unique portfolio of land and property throughout the UK, worth over £500 million. Their team undertake land assembly and prepare their otherwise redundant property for regeneration by progressing it through the planning process. *

Event director, Jon Irwin said: “We are delighted at the response to the new setup, which creates a more holistic approach to water level management and contingency planning, by getting the relevant stakeholders together, with overlapping interests and helping to counter silo thinking and planning.”

The National Infrastructure Commission (NIC) will be presenting either their new recommendations to the government, or an update on what the government has done since their last report. In the 2022 report the NIC recommended stricter controls on new property developments. They said that nearly £12bn of investment in drainage infrastructure over the next thirty years will be necessary to stop thousands more homes and businesses from flooding, due

to inadequate drainage. Hopefully, the new report will be available, by the time the show comes around and will make for an interesting presentation.

A welcome is extended to the Water Jetting Association (WJA) who, for the first time, will be supporting the show and have a presence with a stand on the floor.

National Drainage Show Sits Perfectly Between two Other Events

There is a lot more to come for the National Drainage Show, which has the added bonus of being sandwiched between the Homes UK show and Futurescape, the commercial landscaping event, both of which will attract their fair share of developers, planners contractors and local authorities, who will then be welcomed to come into the event, if interested.

DEVELON MARKS PLANTWORX DEBUT WITH BEST LIVE DEMONSTRATION AWARD

Develon, formerly known as Doosan Construction Equipment, has underscored its very successful debut at the Plantworx Exhibition by winning the Best Live Demonstration Award from the organisers, recognising the best overall use of outdoor space and best stand set up. The Best Live Demonstration Award is one of the onsite awards for those exhibitors at Plantworx who made a big impact on the onsite judges who assessed companies’ stands and demonstration areas. The awards were presented at the Exhibitor’s Reception on the first evening of the show.

The Best Live Demonstration Award category was judged by Nick Drew (Earthmovers) and Peter Haddock (Content with Media) – who were unanimous that this prize should go to Develon. Their statement about the Develon stand read as follows: “There was a lot of thought and preparation that went into this stand – it really had the wow factor. The stand and the demo area have a really nice feel and flow and the whole stand was not just a ‘tent in a field’ but a truly impressive stand.”

Kevin Lynch, Marketing Communications Manager for Develon, said: “We are delighted to win The Best Live Demonstration Award, especially with the transition we are making with the Develon brand and making its first appearance at Plantworx. The excellent Demo show on the stand carried out by our operators, Nigel Horton and Alex Humpage, brings across the high performance, innovation, versatility and durability of Develon equipment in an exciting and very watchable way.”

The Demonstration area on the Develon stand at Plantworx featured the new DX250WMH-7 material handler being launched at the show. Joining the DX250WMH-7 in the Demonstration area was the Develon DL80-7 compact wheel loader, the DX55R-7 5.7 tonne

mini-excavator, the DX225LC-7 23 tonne crawler excavator and the DL420CVT-7 wheel loader.

The DX250WMH-7 was one of several products on display being seen for the first time in the UK. They included the new DX63-7 6 tonne mini-excavator and the new 14.6 tonne DX140LC-7K crawler excavator in the Static section of the stand.

New Develon Excavators

Together with the DX62R-7, the DX63-7 is one of two new 6 tonne mini-excavators from Develon, completing the roll out of the next generation of machines from the company, with a new shared global styling design. Both models are powered by the D24 Stage V compliant diesel engine providing 44.3 kW (59.4 HP) of power. Despite offering an 8% increased torque of 26.5 kgm/rpm, the D24 engine still provides a 7% decrease in engine fuel consumption. Like all of Develon’s new generation mini-excavators, the DX63-7 is designed to offer maximum performance, optimum stability, increased versatility, enhanced operator comfort, controllability, durability, ease of maintenance and serviceability.

The new DX140LC-7K 14.6 tonne crawler excavator, replaces the company’s successful DX140LC-7 model.

Whilst the performance and working range are the same as the DX140LC-7, the new machine incorporates many improvements that enhance safety and convenience both for the operator and for working on site, together with a better operator experience, particularly from a maintenance point of view.

The upgraded serviceability of the DX140LC-7K includes better access to the DEF tank and the fuel refilling hose. This is combined with a much easier approach for the operator to the engine compartment via new anti-slip steps and handrails positioned behind the cab. The DX140LC-7K also has a new flattened engine cover design that has reduced the

maximum height of cover components on the back of the machine from 1285.5 mm and 1320 mm down to a uniform 1070 mm across all of the back of the machine. This now offers much better visibility for the operator both to the rear and to the right hand side of the machine.

Joining the DX63-7 and DX140LC-7K in the Static area of the Develon stand was the DX27Z-7 and DX85R-7 miniexcavators, the DX100W-7 wheeled excavator, the DL80TL-7 compact wheel loader and the DL280-7 wheel loader.

New DX250WMH-7 Material Handler

Equipped with an MG22 Sorting Grapple, the new DX250WMH-7 25 tonne Stage V compliant material handler were demonstrated by Develon for the first time in the UK, for use in the solid waste, recycling, demolition and forestry industries. Designed to carry out the toughest tasks, the DX250WMH-7 is built with front and rear stabilizers, and a boom and arm specifically designed for material handling tasks. A standard feature is the hydraulic cab riser, which gives the operator better all-around visibility of the attachment and work area.

The DX250WMH-7 material handler is easy to operate with ergonomic joysticks and a steering wheel. The machine comes equipped with two-way auxiliary and rotate circuit hydraulics to improve efficiency. The operator can use buttons on the joysticks or an optional foot pedal to control auxiliary attachments. The new DX250WMH-7 material handler is powered by the 6-cylinder, turbocharged Develon DL06V water-cooled diesel engine, providing an output (SAE J1995) of 141 kW (189 HP) at 1900 RPM.

HELICOPTER FLIES LIEBHERR

CRANE

INTO CITY’S OLD TOWN DISTRICT

When a conventional tower crane assembly by mobile crane isn’t possible, Liebherr customers have other options available: in the Slovakian capital of Bratislava, experts from Liebherr dealer Kranimex rose to the challenge by using airlifts. A helicopter transported the 40 LC topslewing crane into the city centre. The Liebherr machine is set to assist the construction of new apartments there in the coming months.

The 40 LC is at work in the centre of Bratislava. A new build project without direct road access is underway in an up-and-coming area there. To deal with the projecting edges of neighbouring buildings, a normal assembly of the Liebherr crane via mobile crane would have needed a large machine with a minimum lifting capacity of 350 tonnes plus a jib extension.

But the real problem lay in the fact that the 40 LC’s assembly would have necessitated suspension of public transport, with trams running every five minutes, as well as the costly dismantling and subsequent reinstallation of tram power lines. An assembly by helicopter, in collaboration with heavy haulage specialist Tech-Mont, proved to be the right solution for the experts from Liebherr dealer Kranimex. Tech-Mont has more than 25 years of experience in the market.

Helicopter transports heaviest crane part without a problem

The challenging assembly took a total of two days. The MI-8T helicopter used had a maximum lifting capacity of three tonnes. This meant that the helicopter was able to transport even the heaviest crane part, a 2,750-kilogram slewing platform, without a problem. The helicopter picked up the crane components, including tower sections, jib, and counter jib, at a temporary storage location by the Danube and flew them over the city’s rooftops to the construction site. Eleven flights were needed to deliver all of the crane parts. Experienced service fitters from Kranimex took delivery of the air-lifted components before assembling the top-slewing crane.

“Strong and reliable teamwork was the key factor for this exceptional assembly,” says Patrik Šeba, service fitter from Liebherr dealer Kranimex. “This was our third assembly with Tech-Mont so we knew we could rely on each other.”

Narrow tower system and foundation anchors

The Liebherr 40 LC crane is working on site with a hook height of 30 metres and a jib measuring just under 25 metres. It offers a maximum lifting capacity of 4,000 kilograms. To save as much space as possible, the crane has been mounted on foundation anchors and the narrow 63 LC tower system, which features external

dimensions of just 1.2 x 1.2 metres. The top-slewing crane was built in 2006 and continues to provide reliable service, which is testament to the high quality and durability of Liebherr machines.

It is expected that the crane will continue working on the residential project in the centre of Bratislava until the end of 2023. Its dimensions allow the Liebherr machine to access all parts of the site with ease and to assist with various lifting operations, including the movement of bricks and concrete. Once the crane has finished its work, it will be dismantled by helicopter and flown back over the rooftops of Bratislava.

SMT GB SHOWCASE THEIR OPTIMISTIC VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY AT LYDDEN HILL

With great enthusiasm to support a broad range of sustainable initiatives, SMT are proud to be one of the main sponsors of Volvo CE’s fully electric WRX World Rallycross Championship team.

When the WRX World Rallycross Championship visited Lydden Hill during the penultimate weekend of July for the UK instalment of the series, SMT were proud to welcome visitors to view Volvo CE’s full current range of electric construction equipment products.

Despite an initial incident the day before the races were due to commence, all visitors to Lydden Hill over the course of the race weekend were able to visit the team in the Volvo Activation Area, which offered all visitors their first glimpse of Volvo’s next generation of electric machines, including the mighty 23-tonne EC230 Electric excavator, and L120H electric conversion wheeled loader. Additionally, the L25 Electric wheeled

loader and EC18 Electric excavator were also displayed in the Volvo Activation Area, and visitors were invited to try out the ECR18 Electric excavator for a timed operator skills challenge.

Built on proven technology, the EC230 offers all of the benefits of going electric, with none of the drawbacks. Thanks to the machine’s powerful electric motor, operators benefit from low noise, lower vibrations and more responsive hydraulics.

Additionally, the L120H conversion turns this strong and versatile workhorse into a fully-electric powerhouse, offering zero tailpipe emissions, near silent operation and a much more comfortable work environment.

Making their debut last year, SMT’s compact range of fully electric Volvo machines offer customers the flexibility and versatility to operate in any environment at any time, due to their low noise and zero tailpipe emissions. A Volvo fast-charger provided power for all of the

electric machines displayed on the SMT GB stand, which can charge any of the machines in the Volvo electric range from 20% to 80% in as little as one hour.

Commenting on the race weekend, SMT Director of Strategic Accounts Phil Battle states: “We were thrilled to see so many people enjoying the race weekend with their families. It was a great feeling not only to talk through SMT and Volvo’s vision for the future, but to showcase the products and solutions available today. The atmosphere all throughout the race weekend was absolutely electric, and we can’t wait for the WRX Championship to come back to Britain next year.”

RISE IN SALES OF CAT® GC RANGE AS COMPANIES SEEK ECONOMICAL SOLUTIONS

Finning UK & Ireland, the world’s largest dealer of Cat® machines and equipment, has last year doubled its sales of Cat GC, which provide reliability and fuel efficiency at a lower cost per hour as customers seek to balance sustainability with affordability.

George Ionescu, Product Manager at Finning, said the GC machines remain a popular option for plant hire companies looking for equipment with low fuel consumption following escalating charges and which are simple to use with a level of in-built tech features to get everyday jobs done.

He said: “We’re seeing a 50/50 split between customers opting for our standard GC models and those using the performance models with embedded technologies which are very much needed on infrastructure projects such as HS2, where the latest technology is driving safety improvements, optimising productivity, and reducing the carbon footprint.

“This trend is driven by sustainability and the current economic climate, together with the benefits of current technologies within the plant hire market.

“The GC models are ideal for the plant hire business and the Cat 313 GC has become one of the most popular choices in this segment because of its versatility, lack of DEF sage and exceptional fuel consumption.

The rise in sales of Cat GC machines is set to be boosted further this year when Finning launches the medium class 22-tonne Cat 966 GC medium wheel loader into the UK market offering low operating costs, durability, and load sensing hydraulics with the same level of access to the quality after-sales support Finning has championed for decades.”

He added: “At the other end of the market Caterpillar is also developing premium technologies and electric powered machines which will help reduce carbon emissions, but these are

in the development stage and will hit the market in several years.

“Again, as a customer there is a balance to be struck between the cost in investment of these new technologies – as an electric machine could cost five times as much as a similar diesel powered one – and the number of hours the machine will be used and the type of jobs that these machines will be performing. With the current economic climate and market challenges, the question is which sustainable solutions are best for each of our customers and is why Caterpillar offer a broad range of products to meet these differing customer needs.”

KENTEC TOOL HIRE WASH WITH A TRIME X-WASH

Following their move into larger premises, Tonbridge-based Tool Hire Company, Kentec Tool Hire has invested in a Trime X-WASH wash bay ready to clean their fleet of diggers, dumpers, and garden machinery.

Representatives of Kentec first spotted the X-WASH at Coventry’s Executive Hire Show, and then followed up their interest directly with Trime.

Commenting on this investment, Kentec’s Lee Batson said, “We had been looking for a plant cleaning system for some time, and we were very impressed with the X-WASH when we saw it at the Show. Now it has been installed our teams are really pleased with the X-WASH as they hardly have to do an extra cleaning up after using it!”

“The X-WASH looks great, it doesn’t take up too much room in the yard, and its water recycling attributes are good for the environment,” added Lee.

The X-WASH is an ecological, flexible cleaning system for most types of plant and machinery. The X-WASH will help to prevent soil pollution and contamination of drains from oil, grease and other chemical contaminants commonly associated with the regular cleaning of site equipment. The cleaning area is connected to the rear solids collection tank section, which recycles the water through a system of filters, which means that all heavy solids are safely contained and easily removed. From here the dirty water is pumped into the filtration tank where a series of filters removes smaller solid particulates, hydrocarbons, and oils. Easy access to both the solids collection tank and filtration tank ensures all contaminates are disposed of properly.

Kentec Tool Hire Ltd has been established for over 30 years providing plant, tool, and equipment hire, training, and safety products to the commercial, industrial, construction, and domestic

markets. They offer a wide range of tools and equipment, including access, power, excavators, and cleaning machinery. They also have a tool repair service.

Kentec Tool Hire is based on the Ton100 Business Estate, Tonbridge.

Trime is a leading manufacturer, of environmentally sustainable products for the rail, off-shore, event, construction, and rental markets. The company also has a vast range of lighting towers, and dust suppression equipment. Trime UK is headquartered in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire; their manufacturing plant and main offices are based near Milan, Italy.

ELECTRIFYING CASE ROADSHOW RETURNS TO THE UK IN SEPTEMBER

CASE Construction Equipment is bringing its hugely popular machinery Roadshow to the UK. The event, which has already welcomed hundreds of customers and dealer partners at sites in Germany, Italy and France this year will take place at Wild Park Derbyshire, on September 14-15.

The CASE Roadshow provides existing and potential customers and equipment users with the opportunity to try a wide range of the company’s latest models in actual working conditions, including a first chance for many to see some of the firm’s 100% electric compact equipment. Keen operators will also be able to take part in the UK round of this year’s hotly-contested CASE Rodeo operator competition, putting their skills behind the controls to the test against the best in the business, in a series of exciting and technically challenging trials.

Equipment on show will include models from the recently introduced E-Series

wheeled excavator line-up - WX140E and the WX160E. There will also be a chance to get behind the controls of the new C-Series grader, complete with its innovative electro-hydraulic systems that bring a new level of control to moldboard and machine steering operation.

A range of machines from the new D-Series mini excavator line-up, along with larger E-Series crawler models, will be available for customers to try. Providing a glimpse of a zero-emission future, customers will also be able to see the recently-announced CX25EV in action.

The second model in CASE’s growing full electric range of compact construction machinery, the CX25EV is equipped with a 25kW electric drive motor and a 32.5kW lithium-ion battery pack, among the most powerful in the class. The battery can be recharged in less than two hours, using an external rapid charger, providing full-day working autonomy in normal mini excavator use.

For those looking at heavier midi excavators, the latest CX75E, featuring a two-piece boom for added operating versatility, will be launched later this year. Benefitting from many of the ground-breaking features of its smaller CX65E stablemate, the 7.5-tonne machine has an Electronic Open Centre (EOC) hydraulic system, contributing to increased productivity and reduced emissions. With a wider undercarriage and longer boom and dipper combination, the CX75E delivers greater stability and increased digging performance.

CASE is not only working with battery electric drivelines in its future mini excavators, as it continues to embrace a commitment to carbon neutrality. The upcoming ePico compact wheel loader, which tips the scales at 3.6-tonnes and boasts a 0.5m3 bucket capacity, is powered by a 23kWh battery pack. With an optional off-board fast charger capable of recharging the battery in just one hour, the machine can deliver 3-6 hours of operating autonomy, depending on the job site.

There will be plenty of interest for business managers and owners less keen to take to the levers, with plenty of experts on hand to discuss the benefits of a wide range of CASE Connected Services. As part of the CASE Service Solutions range, these fleet management systems are designed to boost fleet productivity, profitability and uptime of CASE equipment and provide new levels of dealer support to customers.

“The CASE Roadshows take our machines to the customer, through tailored, localised events that provide a hands-on experience with dedicated field activities,” said Federico Bullo, Head of Europe, Construction Equipment CNH Industrial.

“We have recently celebrated having all of our dealer partners together for the European Dealer Convention and it has been great to see our customers again at our roadshows around Europe.”

The UK CASE Roadshow will take place on September 14-15 at Wild Park Derby, Middle Wild Park Farm, Brailsford, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, DE6 3BN.

FUTURE CONSTRUCTION PLANT STARS HONOURED IN RECORD-BREAKING AWARDS CEREMONY

The UK’s most promising apprentices and trainees in the construction plant sector have been announced at the Construction Plant-hire Association’s (CPA) Stars of the Future Awards 2023.

Just under 100 nominations were received for the CPA Stars of the Future Awards 2023 - an increase of more than 30% on the previous highest ever total. The awards scheme has been running for over 10 years and identifies some of the industry’s brightest up-and-coming talent.

Almost 350 people attended the awards ceremony which was hosted at the Heart of England Conference and Events Centre in Fillongley, near Coventry, by former TV newsreader, presenter and journalist Merryn Myatt. The 11 CPA and industry judges involved described the competition this year as the ‘most fiercely contested’ awards yet, after the record number of entries. Due to the very high quality of nominations, additional sub-categories and special awards were subsequently introduced to recognise the exceptional talent and commitment of the nominees.

The CPA is the leading trade association for the construction plant sector in the UK, with over 1,900 members who supply 85% of hired plant to the construction industry. The awards ceremony was held in association with event sponsors CRJ Services, Flannery Plant Hire, GAP Group, L Lynch Plant Hire & Haulage and Sunbelt Rentals, and award sponsors ACOP Group, Liebherr, M O’Brien Plant Hire, NOCN Group, Plant Planet, Southern Hoist Services, Tower Staff Construction and Wolffkran.

Stars of the Future was originally introduced to recognise outstanding Apprentice Plant Mechanics and Plant Technicians, but the scope of the event has been extended in recent years to reward further job roles in the construction plant sector and recognise new apprenticeships. Nationally, approximately 900 apprentices span the main plant-based occupations and the 2023 awards saw the introduction of two new awards categories at Stars of the Future - Young Plant Operative of the Year and Apprentice Mentor of the Year.

Stu McInroy, Chief Executive of the CPA said: “Having joined the CPA only recently, this was my first experience of Stars of the Future and it was a wonderful experience of excellence. Award winners received some fabulous prizes, including tool kits, training courses, iPads and an overseas trip to visit a Liebherr crane manufacturing plant in Germany, and we would like to congratulate all nominees and winners.

“I should like to thank all our sponsors, without whom we simply could not stage such an event or reward our award winners so handsomely, and of course each of our 11 judges for the time they have taken sifting and assessing the nominations and selecting the winners.”

At the awards ceremony, Stu also made special mention of Kevin Minton, who has recently retired as Chief Executive of the CPA. Kevin originally introduced and developed the concept of a Stars of the Future awards programme to give apprentices and trainees the recognition they deserve and identify those who will be the industry leaders of tomorrow. Within 10 years, Stars of the Future has grown from being a somewhat low-key event (held in a muddy field during one of the plant shows) for college-nominated Plant Mechanics into being the stand-alone national premier awards event that encompasses all of the plant-based apprenticeships and other occupations.

This year, Stars of the Future had a two-tier judging process - the CPA selection panel and a panel of external judges who decided the eventual winners of each category. The external judging panel included Arran Willis of Liebherr-GB, Siôn Morgan Jones of ACOP Group, Kirsty Archbold-Laming of Southern Hoist Services, Leigh Sparrow of Vertikal Press, Graham Black of Earthmovers Magazine, Tim Brownbridge of BAM Nuttall and independent judge Rob Allen.

36 august 2023 PLANT PLANET event preview rwm 2023

All were boundary-pushing products upon their release and this year’s event is guaranteed to feature the newest generation of disruptive, game-changing products.

We are excited to be attending the RWM Event ourselves! Plant Planet exhibited at RWM last year, and we’re hoping to build upon the success we had in 2022. We’re particularly enthusiastic to meet the 10,000+ unique visitors attending the show and talking to them about their careers, interests, and lives.

Another highlight of the RWM event is its pulling power. Major brands like McDonald’s, Tesco, Siemens, Biffa, British Steel, Nestle, and Marks & Spencer are just a handful of A-list attendees at RWM, with a total of 48 countries being represented in 2022. Almost 90% of exhibitors hold buying power, whilst 78% hold senior management positions. If you’re in the recycling industry and wish to make new connections, then RWM really is the event for you.

2022 event a huge success

Those who’ll remember the last edition of RWM will understand why we’re so excited about this one. Highlights of the last edition included the 42 new exhibitors, the live demonstration area, and the bustling atmosphere. This year’s event aims to build upon the 2022 event, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store.

Dedicated Machinery and Equipment Zone

RWM has a dedicated zone for machinery and equipment where the latest industry-leading technology will be showcased. Companies like Sword Engineering, Terex Recycling Systems, CK International, Deltax Limited, Blazequel, Rotospiral, TANA, and Nihot represent just some of the past and present exhibitors here, each one displaying awe-inspiring equipment and futuristic technology.

The variety of the RWM event doesn’t end there, though, as there is also the Collections & Transport Zone, the Recycling Services Zone, and the spacious outdoor area.

Modern issues affecting the Recycling Industry

RWM’s machinery and equipment zone promises to be busy. With the global environment under threat and the safety of our planet potentially hanging in the balance, it’ll be fascinating to see what solutions those in the industry have. The latest balers, compactors, sorting equipment, wheeled handlers, and shredders will be exhibited as manufacturers aim to tackle the issues plaguing the modern environment.

The 2023 RWM event will take place against the backdrop of the ongoing plastics crisis. With global talks recently occurring in both France and Uruguay about the spiralling impact of the material, we’re sincerely looking forward to hearing from the experts.

The role of AI will be another huge talking point. As part of the build-up to this year’s RWM event, a virtual talk hosted by GreyParrot AI was given online. This seminar, hosted on 15 June, covered the role of artificial intelligence in the recycling sector and what impact it could have in the future. Plants are now so busy and so overrun with improperly disposed materials, plastics, and disposable vapes, that it is now time to look for assistance in the form of AI. Just how artificial intelligence can help the industry remains to be seen in its entirety, but we’re looking forward to learning more about it.

In conclusion, Plant Planet is greatly looking forward to the 2023 RWM event and we can’t wait to meet those in attendance.

Site Dumpers: Avoid the Dreaded Incident Report Book

It should go without saying that on any worksite, safety is imperative. No one wants to make the phone call saying: ‘That slope on the side of the site? The one you warned me to be really careful around. Yeah, I just drove off it.’

40 august 2023 PLANT
PLANET feature Site Dumpers

We all know that avoiding death or injury in any workspace is the best way forward, but in an industry that utilises large and dangerous machinery, the risks become greater and harder to minimalize. A lot of these things are easily avoided so long as the risks remain controlled.

HSE reports that “site dumpers are involved in around a third of construction transport accidents, causing many deaths and serious injuries, particularly to drivers.”

There are 5 main causes for dumper deaths:

• Overturning on slopes and rough ground – in fact this makes up for 60% of dumper related deaths!

• Moving when a high-lift skip is in its raised position and collides with something.

• Collision involving a pedestrian being run over by the front wheels of the dumper.

• Driver thrown from vehicle while travelling over uneven ground.

• Driver error due to lack of experience and training.

The law requires that both hirers and operators follow certain legal procedure in order to minimise risk and prevent accidents. Safe systems of work should be implemented prior to start of work, including clear method statements, risk assessments and any required work permits. In theory, as long as drivers adhere to these plans, then the risks remain low.

So, what are the potential risks, and how can they be prevented? They can be categorised under three main headings: Driver Competency, Vehicle Use and Site Management.

Driver Competency

Of course, the number one rule when it comes to operating any kind of specialist vehicle, is to ensure proper training for the driver. Even more so with site dumpers, operators should only be allowed to drive the specific dumper that they are trained in and is required for the job. Nowadays, most worksites use dual view dumpers, such as the Wacker Neuson Dual View Dumper range. Their rotating driver position makes it much easier (and safer) to always have the best view of the job, both in driving and working the machine.

It is imperative to ensure that the driver has specific training for such equipment; without it, the potential risk increases tenfold. The training should include but not be limited to, layout and operation of all controls, stability limits and how to carry out daily vehicle checks.

august 2023 41 PLANT PLANET Site Dumpers feature

Ensuring that the operator is not only up to speed on the general use of site dumpers is imperative, but it is also important that they know the specific limitations and handling patterns of the exact vehicle they will be stepping into. So, it’s not just a case of familiarising themselves with the manufacturers guide, but with exactly how the vehicle moves and handles in every situation. External hazards such as ice or rain can considerably change the braking speed of the dumper, particularly when loaded. ROPS (roll-over protective structures) are all well and good for the driver’s safety, but if they have not ensured use of their seat restraint, it can render that null and void. Even wearing slightly different PPE can change how the driver operates the vehicle. Potential risks are numerous, but staying on top of them reduces the likelihood of the happening.

Vehicle Use

Not only does the driver need to know the ins and outs of operation, but they also need to know what to look out for when carrying out daily checks.

This starts with the site manager knowing that the correct dumper is being used for the correct purpose. The main factors to consider are:

• Size and Capacity – If a dumper is too small for the task, it’s likely to be overloaded, which in turn means overturning becomes more likely. In contrast, a dumper that is bigger than necessary will be more difficult to manoeuvre safely and may have less vision from the driver’s position, even in a rotating platform.

• Stability – Dumpers need to be sufficiently stable in all possible site conditions. If narrow track or high-lift dumpers need to be used, assess their stability carefully. Consider the use of alternative types (such as tracked dumpers) in locations with significant slopes or poor ground.

With all this being taken into account, daily checks then become essential to know that the machinery is in tip top working order. Daily checks in line with the manufacturer’s guide should be carried out by the driver, ensuring that daily weather conditions and other potential hazards are also included. Log books for both maintenance and incidents are also vital in vehicle upkeep. Knowing that checks are being carried out, as well as when maintenance has been performed, means that everyone is kept informed about the overall safety of the vehicle. On top of this, having a clear-cut method for reporting and recording incidents means both drivers and managers know what risks to look out for in future, as well as any repairs that need to be actioned.

Site Management

Speaking of managers and their role in all this, ensuring an initially safe working environment is an incredibly effective way of minimising risk. Site management for site dumpers mainly falls under traffic routes, and ensuring the path of the site dumper remains safe and useable throughout the job.

• Maintain same routes to minimise obstructions.

• Avoid slopes, including across the direction of travel. If slopes cannot be avoided, ensure the dumper supplied can negotiate the slopes safely.

• Speed should be low on rough ground.

• If routes pass close to the edge of an excavation, embankment or other drop, make sure that the edge of the roadway is supported, and a suitable barrier is provided.

• Position stop blocks a safe distance from the edges slopes to prevent dumpers falling during tipping.

• Ensure the use of high lift skip dumpers is on ground that is substantially flat, level and free from debris.

• Keep pedestrians and site dumpers apart as much as possible. If required, use segregated walkway.

• Ensure that dumpers are not loaded to a level that would restrict driver’s vision.

Regular site visits and checks from managers will help to ensure all precautions are being actioned effectively and keep hazard and risk at the lowest possible level.

Whether you’re new to the game or an old hat, the key focus for any operator should always be maintaining the safest possible environment. Nowadays, H&S is not simply people in high viz and hard hats telling you what to do; it’s the difference between a booming business and a diminishing one. When in doubt, safety first!

GOLDHOFER »STARLINE« FLEXIBILITY FOR UNIVERSAL APPLICATIONS

Premium quality at attractive prices. This was the motto Goldhofer chose for the launch of its successful »STARLINE« family of vehicles. Today the »STEPSTAR« range comprises an impressive and growing variety of semi-trailers.

Today, »STEPSTAR« semitrailers are available with 3 to 6 axle lines and payloads of up to 84 t. The Goldhofer »STARLINE« offers a choice of loading lengths with single or double extenders or the optional »MEGA« gooseneck for optimum utilization of the entire vehicle length as a loading area, e.g. for transporting containers.

Also, these semitrailers are available with one or two pairs of wheel recesses in the loading area for trans-porting high construction machines.

The platform model offers one- or two-piece ramps with an extremely low load angle for loading low-floor vehicles, a long and wide excavator boom recess

in an open design to carry big excavator booms.

All »STEPSTAR« models offer a high degree of safety and make life easier for the driver. Various materials are available for the deck, such as sheet steel with anti-slip coating, wood or the low-wear »TraffideckGO« polymer flooring codeveloped by Goldhofer. This not only saves weight but also reduces loading height and has an outstanding coefficient of friction compared to conventional wooden or rubber flooring. It also ensures maximum safety during loading and on the road. “The »STEPSTAR« is the perfect response to our customers’ expectations: top quality plus intelligent details at competitive prices. Many customers particularly appreciate the fact that the 3-axle vehicles can be used for permitfree transport throughout Europe with payloads of up to 26.3 t and a gross com-bination length of 16.5 m,” says Marco Ceresa, Regional Sales Manager

for Italy. The vehicles can also be fitted with the »CARGOPLUS®« low-profile tyres developed by Goldhofer, which offer the twin advantages of higher payloads and lower loading heights. »CARGOPLUS®« 60 supports axle loads of 10 tons compared with 8 tons with 205 tires, while »CARGOPLUS®« 80 corresponds to 245 tyres and delivers a 75 mm reduction in loading height for the same axle load. This translates into the ability to move taller and heavier construction machinery, which in turn means greater versatility, more flexibility and fewer detours due to height restrictions on the route.

NEW DEMOLITION PRODUCTS LAUNCHED AT PLANTWORX

At Plantworx 2023, Worsley Plant showcased their biggest ever range of attachments on their stand, worth over £2million. Montabert took centre stage this year, but the UK attachment specialist had some great new products from Rotar and a new supplier in Oilquick.

In the Demo area Worsley were also showcasing the latest addition to the range – the Oilquick Quickcoupler–changing between a range of attachment from Worsley’s other suppliers – MB, Dynaset, Remu and Rotar.

OilQuick is an automatic quick coupler system for excavators, which allows hydraulic work tools to be connected and disconnected from the driver’s cab. The operator can change between various work tools within a few seconds, such

as a hydraulic hammer, steel or concrete shears, sorting grapple, hydraulic magnet, compactor, sorting bucket, tilt bucket or tiltrotator.

Rotar had two new pieces of kit on the stand. The RG55 Grab was launched at Bauma and shown in the UK for the first time. It weighs 3,200 kilos and is suitable for 45 to 55 ton excavators.

The RG55 on the stand, was featured with the new integrated head for the Lehnhoff VL400 – the first one ever delivered, ordered by AW Demolition. This Fully Intergrated Quickcoupler features a unique design and was shortlisted for the Plantworx Innovation Awards.

The second Rotar launch was the RSS10, the smallest scrap shear in the RSS range, weighing just 1290 tons ideal

for boom mounted excavators from 9 to 13 ton and stick mounted from 12 to 19 ton, and developed due to customer demand to complete the Rotar range of RSS Shears.

Juliet Perrett, Marketing & PR Manager said: “We had our biggest ever Plantworx this year. It’s good to be back at the show. It’s always one of the key fixtures on our event calendar.

“We had great support from our suppliers, had some fantastic customers on the stand, rung our ‘sales bell’ quite a few times, and met some great contacts to follow up with.

“We even ran our first ever competition to win a Montabert Breaker. It was also great to be able to launch two new products from Rotar for the first time in the UK.”

PLANT PARTS – PLANTWORX SHOW HIGHLIGHTS

Exhibiting at Plantworx for the very first time this year, Suffolk based Plant Parts Ltd. concluded the show was a huge success. Known to many as a supplier of only top-quality parts and components for construction and related equipment, after 30 years in the trade it was a pleasure to meet face to face with customers and associates from across the industry.

“As we have such a large offering, one of the most difficult decisions was deciding on which products to exhibit at the show,” said Richard Finch, Managing Director.

The Komatsu PC400-8 slew ring taking centre stage proved to be a draw for many passers-by, just one of several hundred slew rings that the company stocks. “The cutaway CAT 320 showpiece was an eyecatcher,” said Duncan Vowles, Sales Manager. One of the main reasons Plant Parts Ltd. attended the show this year was to

release their newest final drive offering of aftermarket CATERPILLAR 320-336 Gearboxes.

“We’re so proud to finally be able to offer our CAT after-market range to the open market after such a long time in the making,” said Richard Finch. “Having been in the business of repairing and selling Final Drives for over 30 years, we’re better placed than any of our competitors to recognise the causes of failure and so therefore, we understand the processes needed to manufacture a good quality Final Drive.”

The Gearboxes have been designed in such a way that all parts are 100% interchangeable with CAT genuine parts.

“Plant Parts Ltd has historically only supplied gearboxes that have been certified by major OEM’s so I was hesitant at first to be introducing a dedicated aftermarket range,” says David Finch, Workshop & Product Development Manager. “After visiting the factory in Europe and completing

our internal inspection and testing procedures, we were all delighted with the results.”

Parts and Components

As well as exhibiting a range of Final Drives, Swing Drives, Slew Rings, Hydraulic Pumps and Recoil assemblies, a selection of repair parts were on display to demonstrate the comprehensive service the company offers. Not only does Plant Parts Ltd sell the best product available, they back up each and every product with one of the largest offerings of Genuine & OEM final/swing parts in northern Europe.

Compact Loaders UK

A range of labour-saving mini loaders and dumpers to enhance productivity and safety on any job site.

48 august 2023 PLANT PLANET company profile Compact loaders

The trading name of Ranger Equipment Ltd, Compact Loaders UK established themselves supplying Compact Machinery to niche markets where creative solutions are required.

Sometimes larger machinery is simply unfeasible, which before left projects trying to make do with outdated methods and harder labour.

Compact Loaders aims to enable safe working, enhanced productivity, and increased profitability for these projects.

august 2023 49 PLANT PLANET Compact loaders company profile

The company has a varied history since its start in 1999 as The Spiderlift Company, where it became well known as a pioneer in the sales of specialist ‘Spider-Lift’ Aerial Platforms. This in turn led to the formation of one of the UK’s first hire fleets dedicated to supply of the same. The rental division was sold to Lifterz Ltd, later a division of Speedy, in 2014.

Steve Hadfield, Managing Director, mused, “Hailing from the access industry from an early age in 1987, I was ready for a new direction by 2014. The sale of the Spiderlift Rental Division presented a crossroads and having pioneered with the Spiderlift machines I was ready for a new challenge”.

When considering which direction to focus on, Steve recalled the work of MultiOne Srl - a niche manufacturer from Italy - who had caught his attention many years previously. Since that initial

interest he had kept an eye on their progress. Given the political climate around Brexit and a potential labour crisis looming, there was a definite appeal to becoming involved in MultiOne’s niche ‘labour saving’ MultiFunction Mini Loaders.

“In 2015, after numerous talks with the factory a deal was struck for us to become the UK Importer for the MultiOne range of MultiFunction Mini Loaders. Luck would have it that I’d approached them at a time of accelerated product development and the next generation of Loaders was about to be launched. We didn’t realise at the time how this step was going to catapult MultiOne into an exciting period of growth and development and looking back, it’s been an amazing period to be involved with” recalled Steve.

With this transition came the rebranding to Compact Loaders UK, and today the company has added to its arsenal of LabourSaving Mini Loaders and Dumpers with UK Importer status for SHERPA Mini Loaders (of The Netherlands) and TWINCA Electric Dumpers (of Denmark).

The company takes pride in its mission and ethos, stating “It is our mission to help you transform your work by adding productivity and reducing labour and costs, whilst enhancing Safety and adding genuine value to your profit margins.”

MultiOne

With this year marking their 25th anniversary, MultiOne Srl remains dedicated to the design and manufacture of MultiFunction Mini Loaders.

Indeed, MultiOne offers the broadest range of Loaders, from the diminutive 1 Series, to the Class Leading 11.9K. With 19 models available the range of features is impressive, such as the EZ range with zero emissions 100% electric drivetrain which demonstrates the ability to combine sustainability with service.

Renowned for their ‘cab forward’ design which places the operator in a commanding position, this enables them to look directly down the boom and onto any attachment that may be fitted. This line of site is uninterrupted during steering, as the cab and seating position is mounted to the front chassis of the articulated steering design.

Then there are high flow auxiliary hydraulics (up-to 95 l/min) which combined with a quick connect attachments interface make the MultiOne amongst the most powerful attachments ‘tool carriers’ of their size.

In addition, the telescopic boom helps maintain the compact nature with class leading dimensions, such as reach heights of up to 3.6m.

Moreover, articulated steering, coupled with 4WD hydrostatic transmission, ensure MultiOne machines are highly manoeuvrable. DBS (Dynamic Block System) and Torque Divider are switchable, allowing for high traction when needed, but also can be set for minimal to no ground damage for delicate ground. With this a MultiOne can be engaged with challenging forestry or agricultural terrain in the morning, and switch to lawn mowing in the afternoon.

52 august 2023 PLANT PLANET company profile Compact loaders

Finally, there is the benefit of low gross weight, which sees many MultiOne owners choosing to transport their Loader by 3.5T plant trailer. This includes the flagship 11 series models which have a gross weight of only 2320kgs and a max tipping load of 3180kgs. In fact, this model offers the highest lifting capacity of any telescopic loader which still meets these transport limitations.

Sherpa

Steve is keen to point out that: “I refer to the SHERPA Mini Loader as our ‘greatest labour saver’ and it’s often overlooked due to its diminutive size. However, these little machines can work almost anywhere, they fit through single doors and gateways, the electric models work indoors and with a range of innovative attachments they reduce manual labour by a massive margin in spaces where machinery can’t normally be used”.

Founded in the Netherlands in the late 1980s, SHERPA Mini Loaders B.V. shares MultiOne’s dedication to innovation and development. Their ethos of ‘evolution, not revolution’ saw

them shift from importing BENELUX of the Opico Skidster, to the SHERPA Mini Loader in the mid-1990s.

“The Opico Skidster of the 1980s was the original Mini Skidster Loader and SHERPA continued that heritage after Opico ceased production in the ‘90s. Often copied, but never rivalled, the SHERPA has remained the Mini Loader of choice across Europe and latterly the electric versions are the market leader in the internal demolition sector in the USA,” says Steve. “With several unique design features, and a build quality and design that is simply ‘bomb proof’, it’s not unusual to see 20+ year old SHERPA and up to 35-year-old Skidster machines still in use today”.

The ‘stand on design’ of SHERPA boasts compact dimensions. From a mere 76cm wide and 150cm length, with 135cm height, these little Loaders can be transported in the back of a van.

As early as 2014, SHERPA were the first to launch an Electric Skidster model, which became a firm favourite amongst internal construction, demolition and soft-strip professionals across the world.

august 2023 53 PLANT PLANET Compact loaders company profile

This is particularly true in countries such as the USA where site labour cost is exceptionally high. Furthermore, the extended battery time of 6 hours continuous use in loading application per charge, allows enhancement with a battery change-over system for multi-shift use of each machine.

In exciting news, the new Z Series is being launched, with some customers already having received their models. This range of ‘premium’ performance SHERPA Mini Loaders boasts enhanced ergonomics, increased lifting capacity, higher torque transmission and much more. It is no surprise that the Z Series designers were recipients of a European Product Design Award in the transportation category, based on a prototype in 2020https://www.productdesignaward.eu/

Twinca

As of 2022, TWINCA was added to the range and swiftly proved the ideal companion to the SHERPA Mini Loader, especially in electric guise. Built in Denmark from manufacturer TWINCA A/S they have proved the pinnacle of innovation.

“For our SHERPA customers looking for the ultimate in labour saving, adding a TWINCA Dumper makes great sense especially for internal applications. For example, an internal demolition or soft-strip team can be clearing the job site with SHERPA Electric Mini Loaders and use them to load the TWINCA. The Dumper can then transport loads of up to 8ookgs swiftly from indoors to outside where their high tipping capability can discharge into skips. Even high-capacity Ro-Ro skips can be reached,” Steve states.

TWINCA matches the SHERPA’s 6 hour extended battery run time. With typical UK shift patterns on site being 8hrs this is ample capacity, whilst re-charge is achieved via an on-board dual voltage charger, which is ‘self-seeking’ from 110v to 240v.

Steve explains, “The TWINCA batteries are sealed, with no maintenance required, other than sufficient charging and are actually quite simple and cost effective, with a replacement costing in the region of only £500!”

The Future

Labour costs are increasing and seem set to do so at an increasing rate. At the same time, site labour is becoming harder to find and retain. As such, Compact Loaders and Dumpers are at a key point to prosper, and the company anticipates rising engagement with the current climate.

In the words of Steve, “Our customers turn to all our brands to help solve a developing labour shortage, but also to remain competitive or become more profitable as labour costs are increasing at an alarming rate. The common response from our customers just a few months after investing in our equipment is along the lines of ‘I should have done this sooner’ or ‘it’s more than paying for itself’. It’s very satisfying for us to know that our equipment is well received and enhancing our customer’s business.”

A revolutionary concept designed from the ground up, REVOTRUCK combines a revolving cabbed dumper with off-road trucking capabilities, making material transport smarter and safer than ever before.

Thanks to its unique chassis and central oscillation, operators can safely receive a load before rotating the entire cab at the touch of a button to face the direction of travel with no visual obstructions.

august 2023 61 PLANT PLANET Mecalac cover story
the new model aims to transform operator thinking when it comes to safety, efficiency and productivity

Powered by a Stage V-compliant 74hp Perkins turbocharged engine, REVOTRUCK delivers 380Nm torque @ 1,380rpm and features a DOC and DPF as standard to minimise environmental impact. The rotation of the cab gives optimum visibility for the operator reducing downtime for tricky manoeuvres, while three steering modes (2-wheel, 4-wheel and 4-wheel crab) and the tightest turning radius on the market make it the perfect earthmoving solution for tight job sites.

While some products in the past, such as reversible site dumpers (which feature rotating driver platforms), have attempted to achieve the same effect, industry research suggests that the cumbersome process means operators often tend to stay in the same position and ignore the technology. After all, turning the heavy consoles can be time consuming and uncomfortable in a tight cab environment. What’s more, with just the internal console moving, mirrors and doors are rarely in the right position, making the machines no better to operate from a health and safety perspective than more traditional forward or swivel-tip site dumpers.

62 august 2023 PLANT PLANET cover story Mecalac
“we’ve already seen huge global demand, with construction professionals looking to invest in future-proof, safety-critical equipment for some of the world’s most innovative construction projects.”

A MECALAC REVOLUTION

Operators of Mecalac’s new Revotruck can now rotate the entire cab to keep their vision and focus on the job and a view of potential obstacles on the site. The exclusive chassis with central oscillation ensures stability and traction in all conditions. The infinite cab positions of the Revotruck open up visibility in all directions. VISIBILITY SAFETY ACCESSIBILITY ERGONOMY MOBILITY STABILITY
mecalac.com

Setting the standards in safety, visibility, accessibility, ergonomics, mobility and stability, REVOTRUCK aims to buck this trend. With complete visibility in all directions, operators can reduce downtime for tricky manoeuvres and drastically lower the chance of incidents. Combining the best of both worlds, REVOTRUCK is a rear dump truck when carrying materials and a highly manoeuvrable site dumper –enabling the operator to face the skip – when loading and unloading.

Thanks to its unique design, operators benefit from unrestricted access to all four corners of the cab. This means you can enter and exit the machine quickly, easily and safely, regardless of the position of the operator station. Two load capacity options are available –a six-tonne and nine-tonne variant – ensuring suitability for almost every job site.

But while the design itself is truly revolutionary, so is the technology behind it. Rather than a manual process, the cab can be quickly and easily repositioned via a multidirectional joystick in seconds. What’s more, thanks to intelligent design, REVOTRUCK automatically adjusts its behaviour depending on cab position. By automatically switching gears and wheel steering, operators don’t need to worry about switching into reverse or mirror steering when travelling backwards.

In June, REVOTRUCK took home gold in the Engineering & Design category at the 2023 Plantworx Innovation Awards. The event celebrated innovative companies, products and services that have made a major industry impact over the past 12 months, with REVOTRUCK recognised as a market disruptor.

Plantworx 2023 A Farewell to Peterborough

68 august 2023 PLANT PLANET
event review plantworx 2023

Glorious Peterborough

This summer saw the return of the highly anticipated Plantworx! Since 2019, the East of England Showground in Peterborough has been bereft of the UK’s largest construction plant event. But no more! Graced with glorious weather, Plantworx, which took place from 13th to 15th June, in every way lived up to its lofty expectations, showcasing industry-leading companies and innovative products.

Even though the 2023 event was, sadly, the last time Peterborough will host Plantworx, it was the perfect farewell from the East of England Showground. Plans to find a new venue are currently underway, but Peterborough and all that it has offered over the years will live on in the hearts of many.

A lot has changed since Plantworx was last in town, with the industry’s focus on sustainable power being as strong as ever. Considering that four years, a global pandemic, and Brexit have all unfolded since the last show, it makes sense that the construction and machinery industry would have different objectives this time around. Plantworx, if anything, served as proof that our world never sits still, and a post-pandemic world has forced everybody to adapt.

august 2023 69 PLANT PLANET plantworx 2023 event review

We were thrilled to return to the event after such a long absence and, from the outset, it was clear that the feeling was very much mutual amongst the eager crowd. The excitement was palpable; everyone ready to see the latest game-changing equipment, forward-thinking technologies, plant hire companies, and much more.

This comeback show saw the return of several major players in the industry including: Prolec, SMT, Manitou, TVH, Magni, Robustrack, Merlo, Develon, Avant, Prolectric, Sany, Mecalac, ABAX, CAT, and Hyundai.

In addition to speaking with several Plantworx exhibitors, Plant Planet met with thousands of attendees during the event, gaining knowledge, forging relationships and experiencing the unique take each vendor had for the construction world.

Prolec Celebrates 40 years In The Business

Plant Planet also had the pleasure of speaking to Prolec, whose stand was one of the most impressive. As Europe’s largest manufacturer of safety systems, their attention to detail, care, and passion for their products was a passion shared by their entire team. Enthusiasm was rife, and it had us in its grip.

The last couple of years have been busy for Prolec, who are determined to maintain their status as the premium brand in their industry. With highly competent and engaging staff, their ethos was clear from the get-go, and their brand strong and secure.

It was a pleasure to speak with Nigel Shaw, the managing director of Prolec: “People are glad to be back at a major UK construction show,” he told us, before he spoke about their PME system, proudly described as ‘the company’s bread and butter’. PME (Prolec Machine Engine) is all about machine control. The height limiter guidance system was designed with the user in mind, championing safety and precision at every turn.

Prolec are, as they have always been, dedicated to user safety. “It’s important that people get home safely,” Nigel said, before adding that technology has a responsibility to not overload users. “You can chuck around as much technology as you want, but the challenge is keeping it simple and not letting it get in the way. We see that as our mission.”

Prolec are celebrating their 40th year this year, and their longevity is certainly not something they take for granted. “We’re always involving. Now, we really want to look after our distributors and customers the same way we would want to be looked after.”

It’s clear that Prolec’s passion is as strong now as it was 40 years ago and their showing at Plantworx was a resounding success. “Overall, Plantworx is more safety focused than ever before, making the show ideal for us to make new connections and develop relationships with existing partners.”

The construction industry may change, its trends may evolve, and the highs might become lows, but Prolec are determined and dedicated to safety.

CESAR announces 600,000th protected machine

With beautiful sunshine, Peterborough was the perfect showground for the dazzling debuts of so many vendors, products, anniversaries and more!

CESAR, The Construction Equipment Security and Registration Scheme, was delighted to announce its 600,000th protected machine! The hefty achievement was commemorated with a celebratory plaque. Suneeta Johal had the honour of awarding it to Manitou, the manufacturers of the telehandler that holds the all-important title.

Manitou Pioneer In Sustainability

Manitou remains committed to sustainable development. With an exciting and dynamic product range, helpful staff, and CESAR recognition to boot, Manitou certainly had a fruitful Plantworx. Their dedication to low or even no carbon emissions was proven time and again, particularly with their new machine labelling strategy, ‘Oxygen’, which is all about implementing low emission solutions.

It wasn’t just Oxygen that was the life force of Manitou’s display. They arrived at Plantworx with a host of new and improved products, the most notable being their new 625s, one of their best-sellers. “One thing we’ve done is improved the power supply with on-board chargers. If you’ve got access to a power source, you can charge the machine. We’re passionate about customer autonomy.”

Another of their notable products was the new electrified access platforms. Available in a range of sizes, they endeavour to showcase Manitou’s trademark focus on self-sufficiency, with lead-acid batteries powering these new platforms. Users are reporting a three-day usage after just a single full charge, something the company were understandably proud of:

“We’ll continue to grow our presence in the UK market,” they said when asked about their future. With regards to Manitou’s reputation, the quality speaks for itself, and as always, their mission is to ‘keep getting better.’

It was wonderful seeing Manitou get the recognition they so deserved, not only for their innovative approach to sustainability, but their approach to the world of construction as a whole.

Merlo Approaches 60 years of success

The vibrant lime-green of Merlo’s product range was as attention grabbing as ever and showcased their new DM range to perfection. Plantworx 2023 saw the debut of the new 9-Ton dumper, the DM9. It was the perfect way for the Italian company to return to give into nostalgia, as their first ever product was, in fact, a dumper. Nearly 60 years after Merlo’s first year of operation, it was marvellous to see them take pride in their roots.

Also on-show were products from Merlo’s new Generation Zero range, which aim to bring sustainable energy to the forefront of the industry. Products in this range have several hours of working autonomy and their 2.5-ton telehandler was particularly impressive. “We’re very focused on bringing the customer products they can put total trust in.”

Given that green is so synonymous with the restoration of mother earth, it seems all too right that Merlo’s signature lime was able to fly the flag for sustainability alongside so many other vendors. No wonder then, that Merlo are celebrating 30 years in the UK market, and without a doubt will be here for many years to come.

Mecalac Wins Gold at Plantworx Dinner

The famous Plantworx Innovation Awards Ceremony kicked off the entire event on 12th June, bringing together several major industry players. Hosted by The Chase’s Shaun Wallace, the event certainly did its job in building anticipation for the show.

Develon’s Debut a Delight

Develon will forever remember Plantworx 2023, as the company scooped up the Best Live Demonstration Award by the event’s organisers. This award is given to the company who was judged to have made the best use of the outdoor show ground demo space, as well as the overall quality of the stand itself.

Judged by Earthmovers’ Nick Drew (Earthmovers) and Peter Haddock (Content With Media) both were in agreement that Develon’s stand had the X-factor required to win. Their debut of the DX250WMH-7 material handler was a resounding triumph. Both judges were correct, as Develon’s stand possessed a level of polish and sophistication that was unmatched.

Alongside the new kid on the block, we were delighted to see the DX225LC-7 Crawler, the DX55R-7 Mini-Excavator, the DL807 Compact Loader and the DL420CVT-7 Wheel loader.

Kevin Lynch, Develon’s marketing communications manager was utterly thrilled to have scooped up such a coveted prize, praising operators Nigel Horton and Alex Humpage for their efforts.

SANY UK Impresses

Tucked away at the bottom of the Peterborough show ground was equipment giant, SANY, who showcased their New SW305 and SW405 wheel loaders in full force. They even had a live demonstration zone, where visitors could try their hand at driving one of the company’s excavators.

SANY, who were founded in 1989, have been long known as a trusted and reliable manufacturer. When asked about their brand, SANY stated: “You see our products in China and in America, and if you can break those markets, you know you’re doing something right.”

The company has only been trading in the UK since 2020, but they’ve made serious headway in the British market thanks to their strong reputation overseas, dedicated staff, and penchant for envelope-pushing products. Their mission is to continue to evolve their product catalogue whilst enhancing the customer experience – a philosophy they’ve been perfecting abroad for over 30 years and will continue to do so right here in the UK.

A Show With More to Boast Than Vendors Alone!

Of course, people flocked to Plantworx to see the incredible machinery on display and take the opportunity to meet the people behind their conception, but the show offered far more than just knowledge.

As with previous years, the Peterborough showground was teaming with fun activities, award opportunities and much, much more!

The Operator Challenge

Right at the epicentre of the outdoor show ground, stood the perfectly popular Awesome Earthmovers Operator Challenge. Visitors had the chance to test their skills against the clock for a chance to win prizes as well as glory.

Many high-profile social media influencers were in attendance, including Amy Underwood, more commonly known by her online handle, Digger Girl. Other influencers included Tracklass1, Lord Muck and Ben ‘The Operator’ Wade.

But it was the showdown between Bearded Excavation and Connor the Digger Driver that pulled in the crowds. This ‘rumble in the jungle’ made it all the way to TikTok and saw Bearded Excavation scoop up the gold!

The primary sponsor for this exciting opportunity was Hyundai Construction Equipment Europe, who kindly provided contestants with the excavators for the individual challenges.

Simulation Zone

After its astounding debut at Plantworx 2019, the Simulation Zone once again dazzled construction professionals with its pioneering training platform.

Operators of every calibre were able to develop their skills and learn even more about the control systems in the world of construction. As in 2019, it was a unique and fun filled opportunity that certainly entertained the wide variety of spectators and users alike.

One of the most notable aspects of the Simulation Zone was MachineMax, who showcased their latest collaboration with PLINX, a top safety equipment supplier in the ‘Get Connected Zone’.

Both companies are changing the game when it comes to on-site analytics, and their operator-focused hardware aims to bring the industry to the next level. MachineMax’s innovative solution helps businesses manage their heavy equipment more efficiently. The solution combines IoT sensors, machine learning algorithms, and a cloud-based platform to provide real-time insights into machine utilisation, maintenance, and performance. It goes without saying that with MachineMax, businesses are able to reduce downtime, optimise fuel consumption, and control the risk of breakdowns; something that they showcased to full effect at the event.

A Final Goodbye

It may have taken four years for Plantworx to return, but the show didn’t miss a beat and it certainly delivered on all fronts. Plant Planet was ecstatic to meet with and talk to so many fascinating industry professionals, as well as showcase our June edition which was our biggest issue yet!

It was sad to wave goodbye to the East of England Showground after the rip-roaring success of the show, but we can all expect Plantworx to be back with a vengeance at a new venue in 2025.

Introducing the all-electric RT210-2e and the RT220-2e

The RT210-2e and RT220-2e have been designed to provide high productivity, outstanding user comfort and control with zero emission performance, giving operators the same level of excellence, they’ve come to expect from Kubota machines – without the carbon output.

Both machines feature an extremely powerful, high torque electric motor that can be recharged within 90 minutes when using the optional supercharger, making them a reliable choice for a wide range of projects and tasks. Powered by a 48V system with modular 260Ah lithium-ion batteries as standard, the machines regenerate energy when the machine decelerates or travels downhill, further enhancing their reliability.

Boasting enhanced loading versatility, the RT210-2e’s long loader arm has a reach of up to 2,852mm, while the RT2202e shorter loader arm has an increased lift capacity of up to 1,140kg.

Compact and agile, both the RT210-2e and RT220-2e are highly manoeuvrable with all-wheel steering on each axle, with a pivot steer of 44 degrees, making them perfect for work in restricted spaces. Further versatility is added by a hydraulic quick hitch which is compatible with a host of attachment options.

The machines have been manufactured with user-comfort front of mind, with an ergonomic design that minimises noise pollution and vibrations for fatigue-free operation. Operator safety is prioritised via a unique overheating function and through both ROPS (Roll Over Protective Structure) and FOPS (Falling-Over Protective Structure).

Both the RT210-2e and RT220-2e also have electric/ hydraulic integration that delivers complete multifunctionality for operators, particularly for lifting and the top cylinder. The machines also have optional boom suspension to provide even better retention of load inside the shovel, even at higher speeds.

One of the great features of both these machines is the fact that a Type 2 Car Charger is fitted as standard so the machine can easily be plugged into an electric car charging point. This, in my opinion, is a must for mobile electric powered construction machinery.

august 2023 89 PLANT PLANET kubota feature

Tracked dumpers in operation

Also on operated display was the Kubota KC70 VHD-4 tracked dumper which has a high dump feature enabling it to empty its load up to 1.43 metres high. In addition, it has a dumping reach of nearly 0.5 metre allowing the machine to load towards the centre of a skip and far enough away from the truck edge.

The other fully electric machine on operated display was another tracked compact dumper – the model KC70H-4e which is powered by a large lithium battery pack - 48-volt 120Ah for 4.4 kwh. The battery delivers enough capacity to provide a full day’s work. The machine can be fully charged in three hours and reach 80% charge in 1.5 hours. A UBC (Universal Fast External Battery Charger) is sold with the machine, charging at 3kw from 80 volt to 240-volt power supplies.

The tracks are completely electric motor powered, requiring less energy consumption over hydraulic powered tracks. One of the great safety features of this machine is its conductive capacitance movement controller. The moment the operator removes their hand from this device, the machine stops.

To conclude, Kubota has once again certainly pulled out all the stops in demonstrating innovation in the industry, as it introduces new machines to customers in the UK. The media event was certainly a great day, and one was left with the definite feeling that Kubota is determined to stay “No 1 in Mini Excavators.”

august 2023 95 PLANT PLANET rail live event review

Everything about this year’s event was bigger, and even better. Blessed with gloriously hot weather, it attracted over 5000 rail professionals, spanning all aspects of the rail industry, with an inspiring mix of live demonstrations and innovative exhibits on display together with a packed programme of forums and workshops.

True to theme, visitors were again able to travel entirely by train to Rail Live – a great lead-in to the event, as an ex-Great Western Railway Class 769 tri-mode was operating from Honeybourne Railway Station into the Rail Live show site.

My mission for Plant Planet was to focus on ‘all things Plant’! So, let’s take a glimpse at some of the highlights of plant and equipment that were exhibited at Rail Live 2023.

The SPL Powerlines stand showcased a range of advanced machinery such as the Zech overhead wiring unit, a new long reach MEWP and a Doosan long reach multi-purpose excavator. SPL Powerlines UK operates a large fleet of specialist rail plant and supplies skilled operators.

G.O.S. Tool & Engineering Services Ltd, as usual, had a very impressive stand displaying a range of road rail equipment.

The Lowdown on Loaders

For years, loaders of all varieties have remained a key piece of equipment for construction projects around the world. As the world evolves, so do the projects, and the range of loader options available continuously changes.

The uses of loaders remain highly variable, with many companies such as CAT and Liebherr continuously pushing the limit on what can be achieved. So, what are they about? And what does the future of loaders look like?

august 2023 101 PLANT PLANET Loaders feature

In recent years, the focus has been on how to improve the carbon footprint of this site staple.

Sustainability

The core design of wheel loaders has remained largely unchanged for decades; hydraulic loader arms, supporting a wide bucket proved to be a timeless combination. This practical framework has been steadily developed to keep meeting the challenges of modern projects with strides made in operator safety, usability, and extended service.

In recent years, the focus has been on how to improve the carbon footprint of this site staple. One way of achieving this has been to prioritise fuel efficiency. Liebherr has been at the cutting edge of these developments, limiting unnecessary counterweight by setting their component mounting position at the rear. This in turn raises tipping loads and handling capacity per operational hour in an impressive design choice.

Meanwhile, Volvo have continued to drive towards environmental excellence through their commitment to electric options. They strive for sustainability and success with the introduction of their Volvo L25 Electric option. Matching the classic compact wheel loader platform to battery power has proven that performance can be maintained or even exceeded whilst producing zero tail pipe emissions and reducing sound pollution. When environmental impact plays an increasingly important role in project bidding, these achievements swiftly show their benefit.

Multi-Faceted

Part of why these machines have stayed at the heart of the industry is the fact that they can be highly customized. Particularly with urban construction sites, where there may be issues with space for equipment or operational limitations, an adaptable loader is certainly preferred.

Bucket capacity ranges, fork attachments, grapplers, augers, shovels, brooms, the list of ways that this one machine can be tailored to the situation is truly impressive. However, before getting carried away, it is vital to make sure that you know the details of your attachment system. They are not universal. Manufacturers will tend to have two key styles for couplers: ISO (hook style) and skid steer style. But this can diverge depending on their definition of a wheel loader to include options such as pin-on, fusion, and IT couplers. Each of these in turn creates a variation in breakout force and operating capacity. Before making any decisions be sure that you consider the type and density of materials being handled, as well as whether the attachment chosen could possibly be used by other machines on site.

Nowadays, there are also a range of mini or compact loaders; small versions of the original loader that work for niche markets where larger equipment is simply implausible. Compact Loaders paves the way in the mini market, innovating the world of loader use by bringing the laboursaving technology to the forefront of people’s minds.

before getting carried away, it is vital to make sure that you know the details of your attachment system.

Safety First

Perhaps the most important thing to consider with a wheel loader is the person in control. There has been a greater awareness in the last few years of the role that operator comfort plays in the bottom line. An enhanced environment and integrated technology have become the watch words for improving ease of use and therefore, productivity.

For instance, CASE’s virtual launch in 2021 of the G-Series Evolution was highlighted by the operator cab. Increased forward visibility has been achieved through use of a larger, single curved piece of glass. At the same time, the back received a standard rear grid defroster and optional integrated rear view camera.

DEVELON took visibility a step further with their ‘Transparent Bucket’ technology, where strategically

mounted cameras stitch their feeds to show the operator what is beyond the bucket. Not only do these changes boost efficiency, especially during attachment exchanges, but they also have meant huge strides in safety.

This link between efficiency and safety is echoed across a range of adaptations being rolled out across the market. Object detection alerts are a key feature for improving site safety on a range of heavy machines, with proximity sensors and safety zones becoming an expected standard. Indeed, Zonr have led the way in extending such protection to the individual workers to maximize virtual barrier awareness. No doubt this is an element of design which will continue to be developed to further improve safety standards to the betterment of the industry.

An enhanced environment and integrated technology have become the watch words for improving ease of use and therefore, productivity

In an industry that works long, tiring hours, it’s good to see that not only things such as driver safety are taken into account, but also their comfort as well.

Kubota have launched their new RO70 and RO90 loaders. With their long reach, brilliant lifting power and neat, compact design, they are perfect for a wide range of jobs. They were designed with comfort in mind, maintaining high levels of visibility whilst remaining simple and easy to operate. Their glass cased, spacious cabs are also fully air conditioned, meaning the driver remains content at all times. Such things cannot be overlooked when it comes to safety; a happy operator is far less likely to cause an accident than a tired, frustrated one.

The Future

It is clear to see that over the years wheel loaders have benefitted from a wide range of design and technological

improvements, and there is no sign of that changing. Greater productivity, fuel efficiency and lowering service costs continue to be at the forefront of the future of wheel loaders. More responsive hydraulics systems, more accurate camera vision fields, greater stabilization over varied terrain and so much more.

It is as ever amazing to see what can be done whilst the heart of the machine stays true. Volvo completely overhauled the materials, including a more robust upper centre hinge bearing, updating the frames for the new axels and transmission. CASE integrated ergonomic joysticks, optional multi-lever controls and digital touchscreen displays. Attachment options continue to develop to meet the specific needs of modern projects.

Throughout all of this, the humble wheel loader continues to hold its place as an iconic and vital piece of heavy machinery across industrial sectors. We can’t wait to see what the generation has to offer.

10 good reasons to implement extra filtration alongside condition monitoring

1. 80 to 85% of Hydraulic Problems are attributed to contaminated oil.

2. Micron Size Particles are the root cause of wear and tear of Pumps and Valves. Wear and Tear generates more particles, and the cycle goes on reducing component life.

3. Micron Size particles damage OIL itself; as they work as a catalyst in chemical reactions to reduce oil life through using up its additive package.

4. Replacing the Oil with New oil is not the whole solution; New Oil is not as clean as the International standards of NAS/ISO and the process can just as readily introduce fresh contaminant.

5. Damaged Pump / Valves / Hydraulic Controls directly affect the Performance of the Machines and Production is affected.

6. Excessive Contamination will overload the standard System Filters that have minimal affect to cope with full flows.

7. Contamination damages Hydraulic Seals to result in Internal / External leakage.

8. Internal leakage is a loss of Power resulting in lower production rate. Quality of finished product is not achieved, and rejection rate is increased.

9. Continuing high Contamination levels can result in Catastrophic Breakdown of the machines.

10. Poor Performance of the machine affects the quality of Finish Products, offering rejects and higher raw material costs.

If you recognise any of these issues – KLEENOIL can resolve this

Even the best oils under impeccable operating practices are vulnerable to contamination but can be minimised and controlled by simple and affordable measures.

KLEENOIL is a cellulose depth filter that not only removes particulates – such as ferrous, oxides, airborne contaminants, and fibres, but also water in the same simple application. With a robust system working alongside fixed plant, the added finest filtration will continuously maintain working oils to the best cleanliness levels, and for mobile plant; a mobile filtration unit can be used to routinely cleanse tanks of contaminant and moisture.

HOW SAFE ARE YOUR TEAM?

The waste and recycling sector is a critical part of our economy and plays a crucial role in ensuring a sustainably led future. However, it is also a sector that is fraught with danger and risks. From hazardous waste to workplace accidents, the waste and recycling sector presents a significant challenge for workers and businesses when it comes to safety.

As with any large-scale waste operation, the use of heavy plant machinery and vehicles alongside operatives and ground workers, will always present a safety risk. No site, even with the highest health and safety standards and best practices is 100% free from danger. In fact, between 2017 and 2021, the waste and recycling industry had the highest rate of fatal injuries per year – with 70% of all

fatalities linked to workers being struck by vehicles or through contact with moving machinery.

In a report from the HSE in 2022, they highlighted the increased dangers associated with the waste and recycling sector - between 2017/18 and 2020/21, the waste sector recorded an average of five fatal injuries per year saying: “The waste and recycling sector has an elevated rate of fatal injury [between 2017/18 and 2020/21] compared to the average across all industries: 11 times as high.”

The most common cause of injury or fatality was being struck by a moving vehicle with 37% of all confirmed fatalities. Second was contact with moving machinery at 33%.

Although existing control methods such as physical barriers, warning signs and correct health and safety training for workers are already in place, they

are never 100% effective due to human error, on-site distractions, and other mitigating circumstances.

So, what can be done to increase the control measures already in place to help make the industry even safer and reduce the number of injuries and fatalities?

One way to that you can increase your safety measures is to implement a plant proximity solution. One of the best on the market is the Zonr Plant Proximity Solution. Zonr creates virtual safety exclusion zones that warn your workers when they are getting too close to dangerous or moving equipment. The Zonr system creates a virtual barrier around anything you attach a sensor to, using UWB technology (the same technology found in an Apple Tag). This allows workers and plant operators to have an extra layer of safety protection while on site.

As shown in the picture - 1000 litres cleaned in 1 dayremoving all moisture to 0.01 % along with particulates down to ISO18/1 5/1 0 from what was out of range.

Oil is the lifeblood of a machines performance and so maintaining proper oil cleanliness and dryness is, without doubt, critical to the success of any machine’s reliability.

Oil contamination and moisture can increase the rate of component wear and lead to premature failure - it is well known that oil contamination is linked to the majority of industrial equipment failures and more so in industrial plant where working conditions are so severe.

Even the best oils under impeccable operating practises are vulnerable to contamination ... but can be minimised and controlled by simple and affordable measures. KLEENOIL is a cellulose depth filter that not only removes particulates - such as ferrous, oxides, airborne contaminants and fibres, but also water in the same easy, affordable application.

WINGET celebrates 115 years and that’s in concrete!

WINGET celebrates its 115th anniversary in 2023 and continues to be a leading and highly respected UK manufacturer of concrete machinery.

Founded in 1908, the journey began when British Engineer John Faulder Burn acquired UK rights to a groundbreaking block moulding machine. Many notable innovations followed, including the firstever “Tilting Drum Mixer” in 1915, the forerunner of Concrete Mixers used on building sites across the world today. WINGET’s commitment to manufacturing quality machinery has never wavered.

The company believes in the old adage “if you buy cheap, you buy twice” so all their machines are built to last and backed up by industry leading parts availability; often supplying parts for

30-year-old machines embarking on the second half of their productive life! Today, carbon footprint, resource efficiency and sustainability are vital considerations, and the UK Plant Hire sector leads the shift to greener machines, leaner processes, and less waste. WINGET embraces this, employing energy saving initiatives throughout their factory, appointing local suppliers wherever possible and manufacturing machines with lifelong durability.

In February, WINGET launched their new 100Te, a 110V version of the popular Yanmar diesel powered 100T Site Mixer. Its launch followed demand from contractors working in Low Emission Zones and urban sites restricting the use of diesel equipment. The company has

subsequently added 150Te and 175Te versions, gaining popularity in markets such as Northern Ireland.

The company’s enduring success can be attributed to its global presence. With over 90 years’ experience in exporting mixers to global markets in an industry where longevity and reputation are hardfought achievements. WINGET’s 115th anniversary is a testament to its steadfast dedication to quality, reliability, and customer satisfaction.

Here’s to the next milestone!
