GLOBAL DESIGN AWARD WINNER

THE MOST LUXURIOUS CHAISE IN THE WORLD: AUTOGRAPH CHAISE

Luxury is in the details. The architectural aesthetic of the award-winning Autograph Chaise will be the finishing polish on your most prestigious projects. The Good Design Award is similar to the Academy Awards of product; it is one of the most distinguished accords in product design. This accomplishment recognizes over 10 years of in-pool furniture design and partnership with builders, designers, and tradespeople like you.

As we move into the fall season, it’s always one of my favorite times of year. The weather begins to cool a bit, our children go back to school (always a blessing), and we can begin to decompress from the frenetic, “full steam ahead” pace of the summer. For me, this is usually a time for reflection on what went right and what went wrong. After all, we spend so much time planning how our spring and summer are going to go, but it’s often difficult to analyze how effective our efforts are, especially while we’re deep in the trenches of trying to get work done.

Analysis is a good thing. As business owners, we live and die by our numbers. This is why it’s imperative that every so often we take a moment to catch our breath and take a step back to evaluate how effective our efforts are. It pays to look at things through an objective lens. Often we look at our business goals through rose colored glasses that help us paint a prettier picture than the one we’re really looking at.

I know this year has been more difficult for some than in years in the past. For industry newcomers who came in during the height of the pandemic and saw a taper in volume this year, this is to be expected after the largest swell in demand our industry has ever seen. For you industry veterans who wonder what’s next after the unprecedented spike we saw, the answer is simple. Analyze, adapt, and adjust. Winners find ways to win, and use the data in front of them to help their organizations thrive.

It’s my sincere hope that as we move closer towards 2024 our industry finds it’s next growth spurt around the corner. With that in mind, I believe in a saying my father was always fond of, “never take a victory lap while you’re still running the race.” I’ll continue to keep my eye on the prize and my foot on the accelerator. It’s my suggestion that you do the same. I hope this issue finds you well and that we get the chance to connect at one of the many trade shows happening through the fall and winter months. The first big one coming up soon will be the PSP Deck Expo in Las Vegas. I hope that we see you there.

America Is Losing Public Pools AT AN ALARMING RATE

Once the symbol for summer fun in urban centers around the nation, public pools have been disappearing with regularity and cities aren’t building new ones.

Public swimming pools have been a central part of American culture for over a century, offering a space for people of all backgrounds to come together, cool off, and enjoy the summer. These pools were initially built with the aim of providing recreation and hygiene to urban communities, regardless of race or class. However, a complex history of segregation, suburbanization, and funding challenges has resulted in a significant decline in public pools, depriving many communities of vital recreational spaces.

In the early 20th century, public pools were bustling hubs of social interaction, boasting unique designs that catered to the delight of the masses. In major urban metros, these pools provided leisure and fun for large segments of the population. Unfortunately, as the civil rights movement sought to integrate these spaces, racial tensions escalated, and many cities officially segregated their pools. The subsequent surge of private pools and suburbanization further perpetuated the decline of public swim facilities in urban areas.

Today, the disappearance of urban swimming culture represents a significant loss for city dwellers. Not only did these pools foster a sense of community and social cohesion, but they also provided an opportunity for children, particularly African-Americans, to learn to swim—an essential life skill. As public pools vanished, swimming disparities widened, with many low-income families and minority groups lacking access to affordable swimming opportunities.

8 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

According to Jeff Wiltse, the author of Contested Waters, during the early 20th century, there was a significant rise in public swimming facilities primarily established for bathing and hygiene purposes. These municipal pools gained immense popularity, but they were segregated by gender due to concerns about potential sexual impropriety. Moreover, similar to many other public facilities of that time, these new pools were disproportionately concentrated in white neighborhoods.

An alarming number of public pools continues to evaporate each year and the problem appears systemic all over the United States. The city of Louisville, for example, serves as a glaring example of the decline of public swim spaces.

Once home to ten public swim facilities, the city now has only four and this summer only two are open. This leaves thousands of residents, predominantly Black and lower-income households, without easy access to water during sweltering summer months. Even efforts to renovate existing pools or allocate funding for YMCA passes have fallen short of the ideal solution—an indoor swimming center accessible year-round.

To put the problem into perspective, in 2009, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission estimated there were 600,000 public pools in America. Today, the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance estimates there are 309,000 public pools currently in operation and that number continues to decline.

Restoring public pools to their former glory won’t be easy. The heyday of building public swimming facilities was fueled by government initiatives like the New Deal in the 1930s, but current budget constraints make it challenging for cities to build and maintain new pools. Additionally, changing societal dynamics, such as scheduled summer activities and the perception of public pools as dingy and unsafe, have contributed to the declining interest in public pools.

Profiles: One-On-One With MIKE COLLINS OF TENJAM

When it comes to creating an inviting and comfortable poolside environment, Tenjam is fast becoming a leading choice for consumers shopping for high-quality pool furniture. The firm has carved a niche for itself by seamlessly blending functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability in its designs. With a commitment to creating durable and stylish outdoor seating and lounging solutions, Tenjam has become a go-to choice for resorts, hotels, waterparks, and homeowners looking to elevate their aquatic spaces.

To learn more about how Tenjam

has been making a splash in the pool and spa sector, we spoke with owner and CEO, Mike Collins, on the Pool Magazine podcast.

PM (Pool Magazine): When did you launch Tenjam and what first motivated you to start this company?

MC (Mike Collins): I launched Tenjam in 2013. Back then at the time our focus was soley on outdoor education furniture. And through that, we ended up getting into roto-molding and launched our first roto-molded products in 2015. We launched our product line called the Splash Series back in 2020 and have been off to the races in the inpool furniture market ever since.

PM: There are some negative connotations in the minds of consumers about plastic furniture, but your products are very different. Can you talk a little bit about what differentiates your product line?

MC: It’s funny you bring that up, because our dealers will say, ‘Hey, you guys make plastic furniture’, and they’ll put a sample in front of somebody, and they’re always just blown away by how robust it is. The look on their face when they actually sit on it or grab a hold of it, they’re like, ‘Oh, my gosh, this isn’t just plastic furniture. This is just industrial toughness.’

10 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

If you go to the store nowadays and you see a really high-end cooler - that Yeti might be $300. Well, you can also find you can go to a discount store and find a cheaper blow-molded cooler that you can buy for $30. There are plenty of Styrofoam coolers you can get for $6. But like anything else, you get what you pay for.

With our roto-molding manufacturing process, we’re making ultra-strong products, with real wall thickness. We also integrate top-of-the-line UV color stabilizers into every color we make. These extra things are what make roto-molded products more expensive just in general.

PM: We like this tagline about your products. ‘Bring on the salt water, the sand, the sun, the rain, and snow. These products can take it.’

MC: We’ve thought this through extensively in our product line. What happens if it snows on your product? Do I have to put this in storage during the winter? In Florida, consumers get a lot of airborne salt and sand. Is that going to affect it? What’s the sun going to do to the product? What’s the rain going to do?

We’ve thought through the materials and processes we use and have come to market with products that can take on the sand, the salt, the snow, the rain, and anything you’re going to throw at it. We had every confidence in the material and knew it could handle salt water and chlorinated pools with incredible performance.

PM: Can you walk us through your in-pool furniture and outdoor living furniture product line?

MC: So we have the Splash Series, and in that series are all the products that can live and work 24/7/365 days a year in the pool. Those are all engineered to work on tanning ledges and sunshelfs. Each product has its own depth rating.

We also have the Session Series, which was our original line of roto-molded products that can go in an outdoor living environment and stay there through all the seasons.

With the Splash Series, dealers told us they wanted to see products that were easier to get in and out of the pool. They’ve had experience with furniture where you need to remove plugs, and turn them upside down.

Other brands of furniture were difficult to get in and out of the pool. You’ve got to sink them and then try to get the water in the core. Then you put the plugs back in and the furniture becomes ultra heavy and near impossible to move.

Our furniture is designed so you simply just pick it up, put it on the tanning ledge or sunshelf, and then when it’s time to take it out of the pool, you lift it, it automatically drains itself and you can use it again on the patio. And really that’s what dealers and consumers both wanted. Pool furniture that’s easy to take in and out of the pool and still looks great on the patio.

Then we have our Moon and Mibster chairs with armrests and cup holders. Those have been huge for us. You can easily set them up in the pool. It takes about 10 seconds for them to sink down into the pool and about 10 seconds to pull them out of the pool. It’s super easy. We also have a lineup of tables that do the exact same thing.

PM: Where can builders, distributors, and suppliers learn more about Tenjam?

MC: We have five rep groups that cover the entire United States. I think the best solution would be if people were to contact us at customercare@ tenjam.com and just let us know what they’re looking for. We’ll connect them with a local rep, give them training, go through pricing, and everything they need to get set up.

Pool Techs Cashing In On New HAYWARD PROGRAM

Hayward®, a leading manufacturer of pool products, has launched an enticing new program called “Get Paid to Upgrade,” aimed at pool servicers, technicians, and builders. The initiative rewards these professionals with a $50 payment for each installation of a qualifying Hayward product, replacing a competitor’s pump, heater, filter, or other select equipment. The campaign not only benefits pool contractors by providing an additional revenue stream but also demonstrates Hayward’s commitment to supporting pool repair companies.

Hayward’s “Get Paid to Upgrade” program has been designed to be effortless and efficient for pool technicians. Participants can access the program website, www. Promotions.Hayward.com, through any mobile device or desktop.

Pool techs are required to enter their email address, upload before and after installation photos, provide the new Hayward product’s serial number, and answer a few questions. Once the verification process is approved, Hayward offers a

choice of a $50 digital reward from a variety of partner options, ranging from food and home improvement to electronics and outdoors.

The “Get Paid to Upgrade” campaign encompasses a broad selection of Hayward’s pool products, including pumps, filters, heaters, sanitization systems, water features, lighting, and more. This extensive lineup offers contractors a range of options to upgrade their customers’ pools, while simultaneously earning rewards for their efforts.

A Win-Win For Pool Contractors

Pool contractors like Scott Reynolds, owner of Purpose Pools in Las Vegas, have found the “Get Paid to Upgrade” program to be a boon for their businesses. Currently, his firm ranks second in the nation for submissions to the program. Reynolds described the initiative as a “no-brainer”.

“It’s an opportunity to generate some additional revenue and also to serve our clients,” said Reynolds, “what we do is take the rebates and use them as bonuses for our team members. At times, we’ve also used that bonus to discount certain Hayward products for seniors on a budget. It’s a great representation of how well Hayward supports pool repair companies like ours and of course, the clients that we serve.”

“We’re working together with Hayward on our local community outreach program,” said Reynolds. “We make donations regularly here in the Las Vegas area to local charities and nonprofits. Specifically, there is this one initiative called Project 150, where we’re helping underprivileged high school students get ready for this upcoming school year. Hayward was quick to jump in and get involved and are matching a large donation that we’re making to help some kids out before school starts,” explained Reynolds, elaborating on ways his firm is collaborating with Hayward at a local level.

Reynolds certainly isn’t the only one leveraging the rewards offered by Hayward. Pool companies like his are taking advantage of ways they can boost team morale by using the earned bonuses to incentivize their technicians. Moreover, companies are also passing these rewards on to homeowners, enabling them to offer discounts to those homeowners in need.

The success of the “Get Paid to Upgrade” program reflects Hayward’s commitment to supporting pool repair companies. By offering rewards for upgrading customers to their premium pool products, Hayward helps pool technicians expand their offerings and enhance customer satisfaction. The program not only strengthens business relationships but also fosters a sense of collaboration between Hayward and pool contractors.

Hayward’s “Get Paid to Upgrade” program is proving to be a popular program for pool contractors, providing them with an opportunity to earn additional income while delivering topnotch products and services to their clients. The program’s ease of use and broad range of eligible products make it an attractive proposition for pool technicians looking to upgrade their customers’ pools.

Moreover, the rewards earned through the program foster goodwill and enable contractors to support their team members and provide discounts to clients in need. As pool contractors continue to cash in on this beneficial campaign, Hayward’s commitment to supporting the industry remains unwavering, further solidifying its position as a leader in the pool products market.

With a wealth of experience under his belt, Kevin has been directly and indirectly responsible for the design and construction of thousands of new swimming pool projects and remodels, earning him a well-deserved reputation as a visionary pool designer.

From the very outset of his career, Kevin immersed himself in every aspect of the pool business, donning various hats and acquiring an unparalleled understanding of the industry. His journey has taken him

through every role imaginable, allowing him to amass a comprehensive knowledge of pool design, construction, and management. As a result, he stands tall among the industry’s experts, armed with insights that can only be garnered through years of hands-on experience.

Today, Woodhurst is a Design Consultant for Claffey Pools, one of the most prominent and highly regarded pool construction firms in the nation, where he continues to push the boundaries of contemporary pool design and construction. His knowledge and experience in the various aspects of the pool business make him an invaluable asset to the company.

Recently, we had the opportunity

to chat with Woodhurst on the Pool Magazine podcast. We discussed how he got his start in the pool industry and why he’s still passionate about designing pools after three decades in the game.

PM (Pool Magazine): We were hoping that you could talk about your background a bit and discuss how you first got started in the industry.

K W (Kevin Woodhurst): I fell into the industry and I kind of like to use that as an example of what happens to designers. One of the things that I say pretty regularly is you can check in any time, but you can never check out.

14 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

About 30 years ago, I purchased a home and decided that we needed to have a pool and reached out to a few pool builders in Phoenix, and lo and behold, I landed somewhere and that started it all.

I had a pretty extensive construction background and mechanical background while serving in the military for about 13 years. I spent a lot of years drawing and designing things, so it really came pretty natural to join the industry.

PM: We saw you mentioned once that working in the pool industry has enabled you to build a career that really reflects your truest self. Can you share what initially drew you into this industry and why you stayed passionate about it over the years?

KW: I think a big part of it is there’s a certain build-up and excitement in meeting with potential clients and helping these people visualize not only verbally, but in some sort of media, some sort of format.

Years ago, when I first started, we used a pencil and paper, onion paper, and sat at people’s dining room tables designing projects.

It’s a little fascinating to me that we were able to sell pools that way because the modern technology now is so good and there are so many options for it that it seems so weird that people bought pools that way. But, yeah, it’s been a fun experience watching this industry grow and mature from what it was.

PM: You have a diverse background in design and construction and project management. How was your experience in these areas influenced your approach to

designing pools?

KW: I had some good mentors along the way and one of them very early on convinced me that it was important to really apply myself to the trade and to the craft. He encouraged me to go through the certification programs and get actively involved with the industry. That’s been a big part of it.

I enjoy engaging with the industry. Whether or not it was the trade shows or the associations. I had some good experiences with NESPA very early on and had some influences from some of the “godfathers of the industry” that are no longer with us, like Al Rizzo and John Romano, both of whom were legends in the pool industry.

Certainly, that would be my suggestion to anybody that’s new in the industry - to get out there and meet some of these people. To find a mentor and the guys that are shaking it up and making it happen out there.

There are a lot of truly good guys who are going to share. They want to increase the knowledge base out there and want to see our industry continue to grow and mature.

PM: Can you tell us a little bit about how collaboration has helped shape your career and the benefits it’s brought to the design and construction process you employ today?

KW: I’ve spent a lot of time out in the field working with the trades and really understanding what they were doing. I think part of that is I just have this engineer’s mindset where I need to know how stuff works before I can design it and ultimately be able to explain it in a way that homeowners can

We all have to remember, they just see pretty pictures. They don’t understand what’s going on in the ground, under the ground, the piping, the structural aspects of pools, how turnover works and how filtration works, and how all these mechanical systems ultimately function.

PM: You charge for design services rather than using them solely as a sales tool. What led you to make this shift and how do you communicate the value of your design work to clients?

KW: I’ll tell you, it was a hard transition. I only say that because, at least in the market that I was in, so many people said that it was just impossible. No one’s going to pay for plans. But the reality is there are people that will.

You’ve got to be able to pick and choose who your clients are and learn when to be okay with not getting a particular job.

I think people that really understand the complexity of swimming pools understand that it is a major investment in the property. They’ll pay for plans. But at the same time, you’ve got to be able to produce a set of plans that they can look at and go, well, that was worth the money.

For those out there that have gone through a lot of the training, whether it’s through Watershapes University or the Genesis program or any of the associations, you have to value your time before you can expect anyone else to.

understand.
POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3 15

PM: How does being selective with the projects that you take on contribute to a better client experience and outcome?

KW: Well, you have to know your limits. You have to know what you’re capable of. I find that to be a very valued trait of someone is knowing when a job is too big to tackle on their own.

Knowing your limitations is a big part of it. But also consider, there are plenty of other people out there in the industry that can help you. You may pay for their time, but that’s just part of that learning process many years ago. Almost 20 years ago, I took on a million-dollar project, and we ended up doing a cost plus on it because it just didn’t make sense for me to put us in that sort of position.

I got some help from within the industry on that project. Building out the hydraulics, et cetera. But knowing your limitations is a really good thing and it just sets a bar for you and a point of reference. ‘Okay, here’s where I’m at and I want to continue to get better, so I can move forward and get to do some of those bigger projects.’ There’s nothing wrong with that.

PM: During the construction process, how do you ensure that your clients are well-informed about the ins and outs of pool ownership and what that process is going to be like?

KW: It’s a lot of information for a homeowner to try to digest. I think to some degree you’ve got to be able to pare your presentation back to the mindset or the level of knowledge that they do have.

Meeting with a homeowner in their space on their property and spending time asking questions is going to give you a little bit of background of what they’re looking for. It’s not a canned speech for everybody.

PM: Looking back on your own career, what has been one of the most rewarding aspects of being a professional pool design consultant?

KW: Well, I still love it. I’ve been involved in the design and construction of thousands of pool projects. I just still love meeting people and seeing the excitement, especially on a young family with kids and you can see the excitement

in their faces over the probability of having a swimming pool in the backyard. When you can make the connection with people where they get really engaged with the process, that’s a lot of fun.

Of course, I get excited when I go to a multimillion-dollar home and we’re looking at a very high-end, very exotic swimming pool. But most of the satisfaction really comes from taking that design and taking it from conception to completion.

I have a project going on right now out in Possum Kingdom, which is a big lake here in Texas that is a pretty awesome job. It’s a big vanishing edge pool near a cliff and it’s just that kind of stuff that gets exciting.

I’ve spent half my adult life now in the pool industry, and it’s kind of weird when I think back on it, because I’ll be 61 this year and, man, the years fly by. It’s fun. It has definitely had its moments, but when all is said and done - after three decades, it’s been really good.

Florida Swims Foundation Announces SWIM FOR LIFE PLATE

New license plate will generate funds for the Florida Swims Foundation.

The Florida Swims Foundation has unveiled its new “Swim for Life” license plate that is now available for pre-order through the Florida Swims Foundation website in conjunction with the Florida Department of Motor Vehicles.

The Foundation, which operates under the umbrella of the Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA), collaborated with graphic designers at Converge Public Strategies to create the license plate art.

Sales of the plate will benefit the Foundation’s mission to fund swimming lessons for children throughout the state of Florida.

“We are thrilled to share this new opportunity with the public as a

way to invest in the Foundation’s mission of providing education around water to under resourced children. Swim lessons are life changing and every child should have access to them,” said Elizabeth McMurray, FSPA Executive Director.

The license plate is currently accepting pre-orders through a variety of options, which are detailed in the graphic included.

“The partnership between the Florida Swims Foundation, FSPA, and various state regulation agencies is stronger than ever after our collaboration on this important project,” said Dallas Thiesen, FSPA Senior Director of Government Affairs. “We look forward to continuing our work together as we move into the implementation phase with

license plate pre-sales.”

The specialty license plate will be offered to motor vehicle owners statewide once it hits a 3,000 minimum pre-order threshold. Once met, production will begin immediately on the plates and they will be distributed to drivers statewide.

“It has long been a goal of the Florida Swims Foundation to create a long-lasting visual symbol of our mission,” said Ben Evans, President of the Florida Swims Foundation.

“To have the new ‘Swim for Life’ plate be that symbol is the realization of that goal. We are excited to share our mission with Floridians state-wide through this new venture,” explained Evans.

18 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

“The history of the artwork is actually really special to us,” said McMurray, “we have a really great relationship with Converge Public Strategies. They are actually our lobbying firm in Tallahassee. They helped us create some different design options for this plate that speak to the mission, the FSPA, and our goals.”

Coming up with the concept art of what would actually go on the plate was a collaborative effort according to McMurray.

“One of our team members came up with the concept art and Converge was able to leverage that to make it visually appealing.

It speaks to the consumer at large about the lifestyle of owning a pool, but also has the verbiage ‘SWIM FOR LIFE’ on the plate. If you learn to swim as a child, you are a swimmer for life,” said McMurray, “that is a lifelong skill that you carry with you so that your interaction with the water is a positive one. So we think the visualization of the plate speaks to all of those things.”

The Florida Swims Foundation funds swimming lessons for children throughout the state, as well as provides scholarships for dependents of employees of Florida Swimming Pool Association (FSPA) member companies through the Margaret M. Brown Scholarship.

The Florida Swimming Pool Association is a trade association for the pool and spa industry in Florida. There are approximately 750 member businesses in 16 Chapters across the state. Members are required to abide by a code of ethics and to be properly licensed and insured.

FSPA provides the industry with access to continuing education courses, information on current trends and issues, and an arbitration program and government relations representation. FSPA is governed by a Board of Directors.

Keeping your pool cleaner charged and ready for action has never been easier. The Liberty 300 comes equipped with MagneticConnect, non-corrosive inductive charging. This super easy magnetic connection allows for walk-away charging, eliminating the need for manual plugging and unplugging of the cleaner.

Simply guide the Dolphin to the charging station, and the magnetic connection will take care of the rest. The powerful lithium-ion battery ensures you get an impressive 90 minutes of efficient cleaning, guaranteeing a remarkably clean pool every time.

The Click-Up feature is a gamechanger when it comes to hasslefree pool cleaner removal. After the Dolphin completes its cleaning cycle, you can use the Click-Up feature to signal the robot to climb the nearest wall, all the way to the waterline. By simply placing the clicker in the water and giving it a shake, you can effortlessly remove the cleaner from the pool. This innovation saves you time and effort, allowing you to focus on enjoying your sparkling clean pool.

The Liberty 300 takes pool cleaning to new heights with its powerful wall climbing capability. While some pool cleaners may struggle to reach and clean the walls, the Liberty 300 excels at this task, ensuring both the pool floor and walls receive a thorough scrub for an ultimate clean. This feature enhances your pool enjoyment, as you can relax knowing that the

entire pool surface is being cleaned without any additional effort on your part.

Maytronics has been a trusted name in the pool cleaning industry for over 35 years, and the Liberty 200 and Liberty 300 series are no exception to their legacy of remarkable performance and durability. With these innovative robotic pool cleaners, pool owners are empowered with hasslefree maintenance solutions. The Dolphin products not only offer outstanding cleaning performance but also lead to significant cost savings in the long run. By reducing the need for manual labor and optimizing energy efficiency, these cleaners allow you to get back to what truly matters - enjoying your pool with family and friends.

While the Liberty 300 is equipped with a wide range of cutting-edge

features such as Eco Mode, ClickUp, and Cycle Selector, the Liberty 200 focuses on providing essential pool cleaning without these specific functionalities. However, both models share the hallmark cordless design and impressive wall-climbing capabilities, making them efficient and reliable choices for pool owners.

There’s definitely a lot to love about the Dolphin Liberty. One of the things we liked best about the Liberty is the large filter basket that filters down to 70 microns and has removable Ultra Fine basket panels. It’s pretty lightweight as cordless robotic cleaners go, weighing only 17 pounds. The scrubbers are high quality and the large opening on the bottom makes it easy to catch debris. The charging point on the Liberty is also completely sealed which eliminates a potential failure point.

Psuedomonas, An Emerging Threat IN POOL DISEASES

Water, the essence of life, can harbor imperceptible perils in the form of waterborne diseases. Within the United States, a multitude of cases of waterborne infections are contracted annually, imposing a substantial toll on public health. Pseudomonas and the RWIs (recreational water illnesses) derived from them are one concern in particular that swimmers need to be aware of.

Pseudomonas is a type of bacteria, specifically the genus Pseudomonas, which includes various species. One of the species within this genus that is relevant to RWIs is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Pseudomonas

aeruginosa is a common environmental bacterium that can cause infections in humans under certain circumstances. It is known to be an opportunistic pathogen, meaning it primarily affects people with weakened immune systems or those who are already ill.

When it comes to swimming pools, Pseudomonas aeruginosa can be of concern because it has the potential to cause a condition known as “hot tub rash” or “hot tub folliculitis.”

This condition is characterized by itchy and sometimes painful red bumps or rash that develop on the skin after exposure to contaminated water, such as

in hot tubs, pools, and water playgrounds.

The reasons why Pseudomonas aeruginosa can become a problem in swimming pool settings include:

Warm Water:

Pseudomonas bacteria thrive in warm water environments, which are often found in heated swimming pools and hot tubs.

Moist Environment: The bacteria can survive and multiply in the moist environment of swimming pools and hot tubs, especially if proper water disinfection and maintenance practices are not followed.

Insufficient Chlorination: Inadequate disinfection, usually due to low chlorine levels or poor maintenance of chlorine levels, can allow Pseudomonas bacteria to proliferate.

Lack of Circulation: Stagnant water areas or poor water circulation can create pockets where bacteria can grow.

Contaminated Water Sources: If the water supply to the pool or hot tub is contaminated with Pseudomonas bacteria, it can lead to infections among swimmers.

Lack of Hygiene: Swimmers who don’t shower before entering the pool can introduce bacteria and other contaminants into the water.

A revolutionary study titled “Assessing the Burden of Waterborne Infectious Diseases by Exposure Pathway in the United States, 2014” has illuminated the magnitude of this concern, particularly concerning diseases emanating from swimming pools.

This piece delves into the pivotal discoveries of the research and spotlights the profound insights shared by microbial physiologist Roy Vore and chemist Jenn Huang in an exclusive two-part episode of the Talking Pools Podcast on July 28, 2023.

Read the entire article:

The study’s staggering figures reveal that in 2014 alone, the United States witnessed an excess of 7.15 million instances of domestically acquired waterborne infections. Tragically, these infections culminated in 120,000 hospitalizations and 6,600 fatalities. Such data underscores the exigent necessity to effectively address waterborne diseases.

A key facet of the study was the meticulous breakdown of disease incidence according to diverse exposure pathways: recreational water, potable water, and nonrecreational non-potable (NRNP) water. Recreational water, encompassing pools, hot tubs, and natural water bodies, constituted the source for approximately 5.61 million illnesses, securing its place as the predominant exposure route.

Potable water, drawn from public systems, private wells, or commercial containers, accounted for around 1.13 million illnesses. NRNP water, employed for non-leisure activities like agriculture or medical applications, contributed to roughly 407,000 instances of waterborne ailments. Acquiring a comprehensive understanding of these exposure routes is pivotal in directing preventive actions and optimizing resource allocation.

The study also underscored the prominence of biofilms in waterborne infections. Biofilms form as thin layers of microorganisms on diverse surfaces within water systems, such as pipes and filters. Pathogens ensconced within biofilms present formidable challenges for eradication, serving as a substantial source of infections.

This digitally-enhanced rendition of PHIL 232 captures a scanning electron microscope (SEM) depiction featuring rod-shaped, Gramnegative Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria. Notably, smaller purple cocci bacteria are also visible within this field of view.

We Asked AI To Imagine The ULTIMATE POOL

In a world where Artificial Intelligence is transforming various industries, the realm of architecture and design is no exception. Through the power of AI, it is now possible to generate stunningly realistic 3D images that allow us to visualize almost anything we can imagine. Pool Magazine recently challenged AI to envision the most beautiful swimming pools in various locations around the world. The result was nothing short of aweinspiring – seven incredible pool designs that rival those crafted by professional pool designers.

AI has made significant strides in various fields, including design and architecture. Designing a swimming pool involves a combination of artistic creativity, engineering knowledge, and practical considerations. AI’s

ability to design swimming pools showcases its potential to assist and enhance the design process, making it more efficient and innovative.

AI-powered design tools use machine learning algorithms to analyze vast amounts of data, learn from existing designs, and generate new concepts. These tools can take into account factors like the shape, size, location, materials, and safety requirements of a swimming pool. They can also consider the preferences of the client or user, optimizing the design to meet their specific needs.

The process to produce these renderings was not entirely perfect but shows incredible promise. With the rapid advancement in technology it may not be long

before AI-assisted pool design software could become a reality

In coming up with the designs for the swimming pools that AI would produce, we gave the software free reign to allow its own interpretation of what the ideal concept would look like. Of course, it did require some basic input to help it along the way. AI is still largely dependent on user input in order to work its magic.

The AI began by analyzing an array of details about the type of pool we wanted to build, along with data about the time of day and climate, as well as destinations to imagine the ultimate pool. We used a list of enchanting locations such as the Grand Canyon, the Hollywood Hills, Paris, Tokyo, Egypt, the French Alps, and even Bora Bora.

32 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

GRAND CANYON - VANISHING EDGE SWIMMING POOL & SPA

AI imagines having a backyard oasis that appears to meld seamlessly with one of the world’s most magnificent natural wonders - the Grand Canyon, where it envisions a vanishing edge pool and spa that blends harmoniously with the dramatic landscape. In this image, it isn’t difficult to imagine swimming in crystal-clear waters with the breathtaking vista of the expansive canyon creating a surreal and unforgettable experience.

PARIS - MODERN GEOMETRIC SHAPED SWIMMING POOL

AI may just be a romantic at heart. It envisions gazing at the world-famous Eiffel Tower right from the privacy of a backyard pool paradise. AI’s imaginative oasis captures the essence of French elegance with its refined design and charming ambiance. The pool’s pristine waters and modern design create an idyllic escape from the hustle and bustle of Parisian life, making it a truly enchanting retreat we’d love to see made a reality.

BORA BORA - MAGNIFICENT POOL, SPA, AND WATERFALL GROTTO

AI’s artistic genius ventures to the tropical paradise of Bora Bora, where a luxurious modern pool and grotto redefine opulence. Cascading waterfalls add a touch of drama to the landscape, while the lush greenery and the sounds of nature transport you to a world of blissful relaxation with an impressive and realistic 3D rendering. This design epitomizes the ultimate poolside indulgence in a captivating island setting.

EGYPT - RESORT STYLE POOL & SPA AMONG ANCIENT PYRAMIDS

Travel back in time with AI’s imaginative concept that places a classic pool and spa beneath the awe-inspiring presence of an Ancient Egyptian pyramid. This daring fusion of ancient history and modern luxury transports you to a realm where time stands still. The pool’s majestic beauty and the pyramid’s enigmatic allure combine to create an otherworldly experience that captures the imagination.

HOLLYWOOD HILLS - POOL & SPA WITH A VIEW

In this visionary design, AI crafted a luxurious freeform pool and spa set against the backdrop of the iconic Los Angeles skyline. The elegant curves of the pool mirror the city’s undulating architecture, while the warm glow of the sunset casts a captivating spell on the water’s surface. It’s a rather contemporary design epitomizing the essence of luxury living in Southern California. Perhaps most impressive is the subtle lighting effect on the raised spillover spa.

TOKYO

AI’s artistic prowess transcends continents, as demonstrated by this serene Japanese-inspired pool paradise. Tucked away in a secluded location, this design draws inspiration from traditional Japanese gardens and pagodas, integrating natural elements and stone. The tranquil waters of the pool invite contemplation, providing an oasis of calm and harmony amidst the fast-paced world.

GEHA, Delaney 37, and Hunt Family Foundation Working To Make a Difference

GEHA (Government Employees Health Association, Inc., pronounced G.E.H.A.) and The Hunt Family Foundation today announced they will jointly fund swimming lessons for children in the hometown of legendary Kansas City Chiefs running back Joe Delaney.

GEHA and The Hunt Family Foundation are each giving $5,000 to the Delaney 37 Foundation. Organized by Delaney’s widow and daughters, the foundation provides children in the community around Haughton, Louisiana, with mentorship and education, including programs for water safety, financial literacy and leadership.

The $10,000 from GEHA and The Hunt Family Foundation will be used to provide a series of weekly and monthly swimming lessons and aquatic safety programs to the community. To provide an equitable experience from start to finish, the funds will also be used for transportation to neighboring Bossier City, Louisiana, which is the closest swimming pool/facility to Haughton, Louisiana.

“If my dad saw a need, he was going to step in and help,” said Joanna Noel, youngest daughter of Joe Delaney and Delaney 37 Foundation leader. “My

father would be proud of the work that is being done in his name by GEHA and The Hunt Family Foundation to make swimming safer for many families.”

On June 29, 1983, Joe Delaney lost his life while attempting to rescue three children from drowning in a pond in Monroe, Louisiana. Despite not being able to swim, he immediately entered the water to help – an effort that resulted in one child being saved.

At just 24 years of age, Joe Delaney’s potential was cut short. Having spent just two years in the NFL with the Chiefs, he showcased his remarkable talent, rushing for an impressive 1,121 yards during his rookie season. With years of football prowess and a promising life ahead, his untimely passing was a stark reminder of life’s fragility.

“As we expand our efforts with The Hunt Family Foundation and the YMCA of Greater Kansas City to ensure that children are safe through the Joe Delaney Learn to Swim Program, presented by GEHA, it is fitting that we extend our efforts to Delaney’s hometown and the programs of the Delaney 37 Foundation that honor his memory,” said Art Nizza, DSW, GEHA President and CEO.

34 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

“With swimming and aquatics water safety programs, we have an opportunity to conquer an unacceptable threat to underrepresented youth today and to address an injustice of the past,” explained Nizza.

According to a 2017 USA Swimming Foundation study, 64% of Black children in the U.S. cannot swim and are six times more likely to drown than White children. This inequity became a reality for Kansas City, Kansas residents following the heartbreaking death of 13-year-old Emmanuel Solomon in July 2021.

GEHA and partners, YMCA of Greater Kansas City, the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/ Kansas City, KS and Kansas City, KS Public Schools, felt the impact of this tragedy and worked to address the disparities in aquatic education by providing 200 students with swim lessons the following summer at Parkwood Pool, the only public pool in Kansas City, KS and site of the tragedy. In addition, GEHA employees provided necessary equipment including a swimsuit, towel and goggles, for each participating child in need.

Notably, all children significantly improved their swimming and safety abilities despite only 38% having ever been fully submerged in the water and only 8% having previously received lessons.

Inspired by that success, in October 2022, GEHA and The Hunt Family Foundation collaborated to provide an additional $50,000 in order to expand the program to more neighborhoods in the Kansas City area with similar aquatic safety risks.

Because of this support, 650 additional students will now receive swimming lessons and swimming equipment at five Kansas City metro locations, including the North Kansas City YMCA, the Linwood YMCA/James B. Nutter, Sr. Community Center, the Cleaver Family YMCA, the Kirk Family YMCA and the Parkwood Pool. This expanded program is now recognized as the Joe Delaney Learn to Swim Program, Presented by GEHA, where each student receives a swim towel bearing the Delaney tribute decal worn by the Kansas City Chiefs during the 1983 season.

“The work that the Joe Delaney Learn to Swim Program, presented by GEHA, has done in our community to address water safety and access is truly inspiring,” Chiefs President Mark Donovan said.

“To be able to work alongside our partners at GEHA, as well as Joe’s family, to launch the program with the Delaney 37 Foundation in his hometown and the surrounding areas speaks to the commitment of GEHA and the Hunt Family Foundation and further honors Joe’s heroic actions.”

GEHA is a nonprofit member association that provides medical and dental benefits to more than 2 million federal employees and retirees, military retirees and their families. Offering one of the largest medical and dental benefit provider networks available to federal employees in the United States, GEHA empowers health and wellness by meeting its members where they are, when they need care. Headquartered in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, with approximately 1,600 employees, GEHA is committed to its members and their communities.

One-On-One With KEITH ZARS

Pool Magazine goes head to head with veteran award-winning pool builder, Keith Zars.

For Keith Zars, building pools is in the blood. The veteran pool builder has been a fixture in the San Antonio market for a generation and has established his firm as one of the leading pool construction companies in the industry. Consequently, the award-winning pool firm that bears his name, Keith Zars Pools, has remained a constant for highquality pool construction in the Alamo City.

Recently, we had the chance to catch up with Keith Zars on the Pool Magazine podcast. We took the opportunity to discuss what’s made them so successful and take a look at one of their latest beautiful backyard custom pool projects which has already begun turning heads on social media.

PM (Pool Magazine): Keith, your business has been going strong in the San Antonio market since 1985, is that right?

K Z (Keith Zars): Yes, exactly. Well, it wasn’t that strong in 85, but it is now.

38 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3
POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3 39
Keith Zars has established a reputation as the leading pool builder in San Antonio, TX.

PM: What first inspired you to start your pool company and how’d you get going?

KZ: I’ve been in the business since I was like ten years old. My mom started a pool company, Gary Pools, and I worked there until ‘85. So I’ve been in the industry a while.

PM: You’ve had your share of obstacles over the years, establishing yourself as one of the top builders in your local area. What would you say are some of the biggest challenges you faced as a business owner in the pool industry?

KZ: I’d say my biggest challenge right now is hiring people with the same company culture that we have now. Trying to indoctrinate them is difficult, especially as you hire in the upper end, which is what I’m trying to do at this point. At 78 years old, I’m trying to pass the torch as much as possible.

PM: What is it you’re looking for, people who have the right heart condition or people who have the right experience?

KZ: Yeah, experience is always good, but I’ve got three full-time landscape architects on staff and they do most of the actual design. I’d say what’s more important is if they have a positive attitude and willingness to help others. It’s a team sport. We’re basically looking for people that have great sales ability.

PM: Certainly pool design has changed since you

first started in 1985. How does your firm stay up to date with the latest design trends and technological advancements?

KZ: I actually try to go outside the industry. I’m always looking at home magazines and things of that nature style. Looking at what new home-building styles are emerging. Of course, you look at pools that are being built, too, but I’d say I probably get more inspiration from others than the pool industry itself.

I would say traveling isn’t bad because you get to see how things are built in different parts of the country. But your various magazines that represent a lifestyle, I would say, are probably what I probably look at the most as it equates to what inspires my design process.

PM: You’ve been very successful at establishing Keith Zars as the premier name in the San Antonio market. What advice would you give to someone who’s just starting a pool business going in 2023?

KZ: Narrow your focus to a certain type of market and product. Especially when you start. You can’t be everything to everybody so you need to figure out what your strengths are. That’s important - knowing what your personal strengths are, what you’re selling, and how you’re presenting yourself.

I’ve also found that it’s hard to grow by more than about 10% a year because of cash flow and things of that nature. You don’t want to stretch yourself too thin, and you got to keep control of what’s happening each year.

PM: Is it a different strategy being a luxury builder as opposed to being a production pool builder?

KZ: Yes, I think that’s somewhat true. There’s nothing wrong with being a production builder. They’re trying to control costs, quality, and things of that nature by building a reputation on a mass production item.

Our vision is a little different. We’re in the higher-end market, but you still have to go through a lot of the same routines to get to where you’re trying to go either way.

PM: What would you say are some of the other things that set you apart from other builders in your market?

KZ: I’d say, for one thing, we’ve got, like, 525 employees. It’s hard to have high quality and attention to detail if you’re running different subcontractors. If you’re running it in-house like we do, I feel you can accomplish it a lot better because you want to train the crews on what’s expected of them and how to perform.

My customers all know what to expect from us, so we’re almost obligated to perform at a higher standard.

PM: How do you ensure customer satisfaction throughout the entire pool-building process?

KZ: Well, I’d say that for one thing, and you wouldn’t think this, but it’s our payment schedule. We don’t collect the final payment until you’re 100% satisfied. So that puts the burden of proof back on us as a company to perform. We know we have to perform to meet that customer’s expectations.

PM: Well, you’ve certainly established a name for most of the high-end custom luxury pools being built in the San Antonio market.

We saw some sneak peeks of one of your latest projects and the photos look incredible. What can you tell us about this pool?

KZ: It was actually a very complex pool, but we wanted it to be done in a very simple way, so it reflected

the landscaping and the vision of the homeowner. That pool is more like a piece of art. It’s not as practical as it could be, but we accomplished what the client wanted.

The pool is right on the Pedernales River, and the existing landscaping, we tried to keep intact as much as possible. It’s like a piece of jewelry sticking out there in the middle of the Hill Country.

The vanishing edge all the way around looked really beautiful and gave a nice reflective quality. Then you had the spillover on the far side, so there’s a vanishing edge and a trough on three sides, and then the spillway on the far side, but all of it hooked up together at the bottom.

I love the way we were able to maintain the view and the house. We looked at the house and the architecture of the pool and tried to combine the feel of both. I thought we did a good job on that.

AOP - Advanced Oxidation Process WHAT IT IS & HOW IT WORKS

As pool owners strive to provide their family and guests with a safe and enjoyable swimming experience, the search for efficient and effective water treatment methods remains a top priority. Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) is emerging as a game-changer in the pool industry, offering a powerful and innovative solution for achieving crystal-clear, healthy, and pristine pool water. With that said, let’s delve into the concept, explore some of its advantages, and explain why pool owners should seriously consider incorporating this revolutionary technology into their pool maintenance routine.

What is AOP?

AOP, or Advanced Oxidation Process, is a cutting-edge water

treatment technology that utilizes a combination of powerful oxidants to break down and eliminate organic and inorganic contaminants in pool water. The primary components include ozone (O3), hydroxyl radicals (OH), and ultraviolet (UV-C) light. Together, these potent oxidants work synergistically to destroy bacteria, viruses, algae, oils, and other impurities that may compromise water quality.

“We know that water treated with AOP is better water,” said Steve Berens, CEO of Clear Comfort, a leading manufacturer of AOP systems, “it makes water care simpler and much, much more sustainable. In today’s world, that seems to be a hallmark of good water treatment. Consumers want to know not just how well you can treat the water, but how much use

you get out of that water.”

Clear Comfort is an award-winning firm that is leading the charge in developing revolutionary water treatment solutions. As a leading AOP provider, they have been on the cutting edge of developing advanced oxidation process systems that have gained enormous popularity over the past decade. Berens says he’s incredibly optimistic about the future of AOP technology in the pool & spa sector.

“Bottom line, people don’t want to own a pool or spa and have to spend a whole lot of time taking care of it. Whether you’re a pool or spa owner or a service technician, we all want to have an easier path to manage that water. That’s where AOP really stands out,” said Berens.

Advantages for Pool Owners

Superior Water Quality: AOP offers unparalleled water quality compared to traditional pool treatment methods. By efficiently removing a wide range of contaminants, pool water treated with an advanced oxidation process is clearer, fresher, and more inviting, providing a delightful swimming experience for all.

Enhanced Safety and Health: AOP’s ability to neutralize harmful pathogens and microorganisms significantly reduces the risk of waterborne illnesses and infections. This ensures a safer swimming environment, giving pool owners peace of mind that their loved ones are protected while enjoying their time in the pool.

Reduced Chemical Dependency: AOP reduces the reliance on traditional pool chemicals like chlorine and bromine. While these chemicals are essential for sanitation, AOP’s powerful oxidizing action reduces their consumption, leading to decreased chemical costs and less exposure to byproducts.

Less Chlorine Odor and Irritation: The formation of chloramines – the byproducts of chlorine reacting with organic matter – is a common issue in traditional pool water treatment. AOP effectively breaks down chloramines, reducing the unpleasant chlorine odor and minimizing eye and skin irritation for swimmers.

Lower Maintenance Effort: AOP systems generally require less maintenance compared to traditional methods. The efficient removal of contaminants and reduced reliance on chemicals result in less frequent water testing and chemical adjustments, simplifying the pool maintenance routine.

Eco-Friendly Solution: With reduced chemical usage, AOP contributes to a more eco-friendly pool environment. By minimizing the release of harmful chemicals into the environment, pool owners can do their part in conserving resources and promoting sustainability.

To incorporate AOP into a pool, a well-designed system should be installed, typically working alongside the existing pool filtration system. The AOP system typically consists of an ozone generator, UV-C light chamber, and a control panel to regulate the process. Consulting with a professional pool technician or water treatment specialist is crucial to ensure the system is appropriately sized and tailored to the pool’s specific needs.

AOP utilizes a combination of powerful oxidants to break down and destroy contaminants in the water. The key components of AOP include:

Ozone: Ozone is a potent oxidizer and disinfectant. It is generated by passing oxygen molecules through a corona discharge or UV light, converting them into ozone molecules (O3). Ozone rapidly reacts with and destroys organic matter and pathogens in the water.

Hydroxyl Radicals (OH): Hydroxyl radicals are highly reactive and powerful oxidants.

They are formed when ozone reacts with water in the presence of UV light or other catalysts. Hydroxyl radicals can effectively break down a wide range of pollutants, further purifying the water.

UV-C Light: Ultraviolet (UV) light in the C-band spectrum is used to activate the ozone and produce hydroxyl radicals. The UV-C light also helps to sterilize and disinfect the water by damaging the DNA or RNA of microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce.

AOP is suitable for various pool and spa applications, including residential pools, commercial pools, and hightraffic public aquatic facilities. It is particularly beneficial for spas and hot tubs, where high temperatures can accelerate chemical reactions and increase the demand for effective water treatment. While AOP has numerous advantages, it is essential to note that implementing this technology requires careful consideration and proper system sizing based on the pool or spa’s size, bather load, and specific needs

A Look Back in Pool History: THE SUTRO BATHS

Perched on the shores of San Francisco, the Sutro Baths represented the vision of Adolph Sutro, a self-made millionaire with a passion for natural history and marine studies. Constructed in 1894, the Baths were part of a grand oceanfront complex that aimed to provide an affordable and recreational swimming facility for the people of San Francisco.

This remarkable architectural feat, encompassing a massive public bathhouse and an ocean pool aquarium, captivated visitors with its engineering marvels and artistic details. However, despite its initial success, the Baths faced numerous challenges

and eventually met their demise. Today, the concrete ruins of the Sutro Baths remain as a poignant reminder of a bygone era, offering a glimpse into the city’s rich history and the legacy of Adolph Sutro.

Adolph Sutro, a prominent entrepreneur and the mastermind behind Sutro Heights and the second iteration of the Cliff House, had a deep fascination with natural history and marine studies. Driven by his desire to provide a healthy and affordable swimming facility, Sutro embarked on the ambitious project of creating the Sutro Baths. This multifaceted complex aimed to combine recreation, education,

and entertainment, bringing together the beauty of the ocean and the allure of cultural exhibits.

The Sutro Baths, situated north of the Cliff House, featured a classic Greek portal that led visitors into a magnificent glass enclosure housing seven swimming pools at varying temperatures. With an astounding capacity of accommodating up to 10,000 people at a time, the Baths were a spectacle to behold. Equipped with slides, trapezes, springboards, and a high dive, the facility offered a wide range of aquatic activities, ensuring a memorable experience for visitors of all ages.

The amenities comprised of a total of seven pools, six of which were saltwater pools and one was a freshwater pool. The dimensions of the baths measured 499.5 feet (152.2 meters) in length and 254.1 feet (77.4 meters) in width, allowing them to hold an impressive capacity of 1.805 million US gallons (6,830 m3) of water. Additionally, the facility boasted a range of recreational features, including seven slides, 30 swinging rings, and a single springboard.

The vast complex boasted 517 private dressing rooms, ensuring comfort and privacy for guests. Additionally, the availability of 40,000 towels for rent catered to the needs of the large crowds that frequented the establishment. Furthermore, the facility featured a spacious amphitheater capable of accommodating 2,700 seats, providing space for large-scale events. Additionally, the club rooms allowed up to 1,100 individuals to gather for activities and gatherings.

Despite its initial success, the Sutro Baths faced several challenges over time. Following Adolph Sutro’s death in 1898, his family continued to manage the Baths, but changing times and circumstances gradually impacted their popularity. The Great Depression, reduced public transportation, and new public health codes all contributed to the declining fortunes of the Baths.

In an attempt to revitalize the facility, the owners transformed it into an ice-skating rink. However, these efforts were in vain as the Baths never regained their former glory. Eventually, in 1964, developers with plans to replace the Baths with high-rise apartments acquired the site, leading to the gradual demolition of the structure. The final blow came in 1966 when a devastating fire consumed what remained of the oncemajestic Baths.

In 1980, the National Park Service stepped in and made a crucial decision to purchase the beach and the ruins of the Baths. This acquisition marked a pivotal moment, ensuring the preservation of the site’s historical significance for generations to come.

The Pool Bladder Helps Save TIME, WATER, & MONEY

Renovating a pool is an essential aspect of pool maintenance, ensuring longevity and safety for swimmers. However, the conventional method of draining the pool during renovations can be a cumbersome and expensive process.

Enter the Pool Bladder™ from Kayden Manufacturing, a premium manufacturer of vinyl pool liners and safety covers, who say this cost-effective solution is transforming the way pool contractors approach pool renovations.

To get a better idea of how the Pool Bladder™ is changing the industry, we spoke with Jim Dorsey Director of Sales for Kayden

Manufacturing who gave us some insight as to how this product is enabling pool contractors to save valuable time and money.

What is a Pool Bladder?

“Quite simply, the Pool Bladder™ is a temporary water storage solution,” said Dorsey, who says the product is ideal for use when performing renovations.

”Often times the water is crystal clear and fully chlorinated and the pool just needs a new liner or repairs. Whatever the case might be, the homeowner does not want to lose that water,” explained Dorsey, “water isn’t cheap to have delivered, and neither are the chemicals. So what do you do with 30,000 gallons of water? Where are

you going to put that?”

Why Use One?

Traditional pool renovations often require draining the pool completely, which can be a timeconsuming and costly endeavor. Contractors need to pump out thousands of gallons of water, leading to increased utility bills and significant downtime for the pool.

Not only does this inconvenience the pool owner and disrupt regular pool usage, but it also hampers the contractor’s ability to efficiently complete the project. The need for refilling and balancing the pool chemicals further extends the time and effort involved in the renovation process.

52 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

“I live in the mountains of northern New Jersey where everybody is on well water. I have a well and just replaced the pump a few months ago. My well can’t fill a 20,000-gallon pool. There’s just no way. The pool bladder could definitely be a viable option in situations like that,” said Dorsey.

For those pool owners using a well as their water supply, draining a pool to perform renovations and refilling it can seriously deplete their water supply. The process could leave a homeowner with inadequate water for essential needs. Using a Pool Bladder™ would certainly make sense in this instance as it conserves well water and save the additional costs of hiring a water truck to refill the pool.

Why The Pool Bladder Makes Sense

The product has been a hit primarily with pool contractors who often purchase several bladders to use while performing liner installations. “Installers can double their workload quite manageably with a Pool Bladder™.

Whether you’re pumping the water out and saving it, or you’re staging the water ahead of time when you go to cut out that liner and measure the pool with the homeowner’s garden hose, either way, that water is

going in faster. The liner is getting stretched. The vacs are coming out. You’re getting a check in your hand and you’re on your way to the next job,” said Dorsey.

“A savvy homeowner who is looking at the bottom line thinking, ‘How much is it going to cost me to get new water delivered and rebalance the water as opposed to what might I pay to rent a bladder?’. There’s definitely a cost savings there contractors can pass along to the customer if they have this in their toolkit,” explained Dorsey.

Ultimately the Kayden Pool Bladder™ is an innovative solution that not only benefits pool professionals but also promotes environmental consciousness.

For pool professionals, the cost-saving advantages are evident. Refilling a pool with water delivery trucks or using the city’s water supply can be expensive for both the professional and their clients. By utilizing the Pool Bladder™ to store and reuse pool water during liner replacements, pool professionals can provide a value-added service while being resourceful and environmentally responsible.

Hot Tub Safety TWO TRUTHS, ONE LIE

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted our lives and communities in various ways, including what people have turned to for leisure and recreational activities.

Because many had to cancel vacation plans and limit their activities, people explored new ways to enjoy time spent at home. Buying hot tubs and swimming pools to transform their living spaces into private oases became a popular option.

Hot tub sales have seen a significant increase since the pandemic, as they are a more

feasible alternative to swimming pools. Hot tubs are more affordable, take up less property space and have relatively lower maintenance requirements – but this does not mean they don’t have the same safety concerns.

The Importance of Hot Tub Safety

Although they are smaller and require less maintenance than swimming pools, hot tubs have significant safety concerns that should never be ignored or neglected.

Proper maintenance including

cleaning, water balance checks, inspections and servicing, as well as following safety guidelines and regulations, can help keep those using the hot tub safe while also extending the lifespan of its components.

In honor of the International Code Council’s Building Safety Month campaign, here we address the importance of hot tub maintenance and what you need to know to ensure it remains safe for you, your friends and your family.

Truth #1: Your Hot Tub/Spa Needs to Be Up to Code

54 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

Hot tubs and spas have codes that address their safety requirements and maintenance. The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code® (ISPSC) is a comprehensive code that is coordinated with requirements from other International Codes® (I-Codes) and the Pool & Hot Tub Alliance (PHTA).

This ISPSC sets the minimum safety requirements for hot tub installation, operation and safety. It covers areas such as:

- Proper recirculation rates

- Proper chemical applications

- Ideal pH levels

- Importance of skimmers

- Suction outlet requirements

- Electrical requirements

- UL listed portable spa exemptions

- Safety glazing in accordance with hazardous locations

Work with your local building department to ensure you are implementing applicable and up-to-date codes, standards and regulations for your hot tub. They will be able to assist with obtaining any required permits and may be able to help find a reputable contractor.

Most states don’t have, or require, a pool and/or hot tub contractor license. However, regardless of licensing requirements, obtaining a permit can ensure that the contractor includes the plumbing, mechanical and electrical items on the permit.

PHTA also has contractor certifications, which may be a good way for property owners to ensure that the contractor they are using understands the codes and standards that govern the installation and maintenance of hot tubs.

Truth #2: It is Important to Stay in a Safe Temperature Range

Even though you may be tempted to crank up the heat in your hot tub, staying within the recommended temperature range can both prevent the risk of pathogens and pollutants and reduce the risk of burning or dehydration.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, the safest temperature range for a hot tub is between 100 to 102 degrees Fahrenheit and the temperature should never exceed 104 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Lie: You Can Go Chemical-Free

Chemicals are necessary in hot tubs to kill harmful bacteria and maintain safe water levels. Common chemicals that are used to treat hot tubs and spas are:

When using these chemicals, it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and local health regulations regarding the use and dosage in hot tubs. Improper use of chemicals can lead to imbalanced water chemistry, skin irritation or other health issues.

Chemicals should also be stored in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions and in a separate location from an equipment room. Chemicals can potentially reduce the lifespan of hot tub equipment due to the adverse air quality condition created when storing them.

If you are considering purchasing a hot tub, or if you already have one, it is essential that you ensure it is maintained correctly. The Code Council has several resources and tools available to help maintain a safe home environment that can be found on the Building Safety Month website.

Personal Home Saunas ULTIMATE LUXURY

Convenience. That’s what so many of us are looking for in so many different facets of our lives. Our phones and mobile devices allow us to immediately connect to the people and information we want. Our coffee is ready soon as we walk into a shop. Our lives are filled with instant gratification. The same could be said for wellness. The trend to recreate the luxurious spa vibe right at home, from steam rooms to massage areas to personal home saunas, is readily attainable, not just a thing of the future.

Along that line, whether you work from home or have a busy commute, it makes sense to invest right where you live rather than spend time and money elsewhere. This is why personal infrared saunas have made their way to the top of the home spa bucket

list. And why not? With modular saunas built for simple assembly and plug-and-play use, ownership is easier and more affordable than ever before.

Home Sweet Sauna

Sitting in the sauna at the gym can be incredibly relaxing after a long workout. However, sitting in a public sauna full of other people may not be so appealing. You have no control over noise level or other people’s personal hygiene practices. Moreover, you can’t control the schedule of your gym. When you have an infrared sauna in your home, timing, noise, and hygiene aren’t so much of a concern. In fact, depending on which sauna you own, you can even customize your sauna session times and have it ready to go when you are. What could be more convenient?

The Perfect Complement To Fitness Regimens

Infrared saunas offer a host of health benefits, and none are greater than the next. But if you’re looking for a way to supplement your workout, whether it includes swimming, running, or doing a cross-fit class, the sauna can do double duty, both as a warmup and a recovery tool. Your muscles become more elastic from the increased circulation of oxygen that infrared induces, but you can also enhance your wind down and speed recovery. Infrared helps reduce inflammation as you sweat and detox.

Contrast bathing, also called hydrotherapy, is a purposeful practice that, done repeatedly, can have a positive health impact as well. It treats a host of issues, typically ones related to muscle and joint discomfort. It works by alternating hot and cold treatment, usually in the form of water, in 10-minute increments or so. Using an infrared sauna for the heat portion of your bathing will offer a more intense outcome, since the heat effectively penetrates your core, rather than your skin’s surface.

58 POOL MAGAZINE - VOL 3, ISSUE 3

Personal home saunas can offer a range of benefits after a workout, contributing to both physical recovery and overall well-being. Here are some reasons why using a sauna after a workout can be beneficial:

1. Relaxation and Stress Relief: Intense workouts can leave your muscles tense and your mind stressed. Sauna sessions help induce relaxation by promoting the release of endorphins, the body’s natural “feel-good” chemicals. This can alleviate stress and contribute to a sense of calm after an intense workout.

2. Improved Circulation: The heat in a sauna causes blood vessels to dilate, leading to increased blood flow throughout the body. This enhanced circulation can help deliver oxygen and nutrients to muscles, aiding in their recovery and reducing muscle soreness.

3. Muscle Recovery: The increased blood flow to muscles from sauna use can accelerate the removal of metabolic waste products, such as lactic acid, which can accumulate during exercise. This helps reduce muscle soreness and stiffness, promoting faster recovery.

4. Joint Mobility: The heat from a sauna can help relax joints and tissues, potentially improving joint flexibility and mobility. This can be particularly beneficial if your workout routine involves high-impact activities that put stress on your joints.

5. Detoxification: Sweating in a sauna helps eliminate toxins and waste products from the body through the skin. This can complement the natural detoxification processes of the body, promoting overall health.

6. Enhanced Cardiovascular Health: Sauna use can have cardiovascular benefits, including temporarily raising heart rate and improving blood vessel function. Regular sauna sessions may contribute to better heart health over time.

7. Immune System Support: Some research suggests that regular sauna use might stimulate the production of white blood cells, which play a crucial role in the body’s immune response. This could potentially contribute to a stronger immune system, reducing the likelihood of illness.

Getting To Saun-ahhh

Setting aside time to enjoy your personal sauna session as a personal routine is the first challenge. Once you’ve passed that hurdle, the next is to quiet the hundred thoughts racing through your head, put aside the mental to-do list, or address the ache that won’t let up. How to get into sauna mode?

Along with simply leaning back and letting the infrared do its job, try putting on some relaxing tunes, or even better, download a popular meditation app and sail off to sauna bliss. Some saunas come with Bluetooth features built right in. However, if the Zen zone is not your thing, try a podcast or catch up on that article you’ve been meaning to read. The quiet time inside your sauna provides the perfect moment to focus on something other than daily stressors.

To engage more senses, try aromatherapy. Accessories that use essential oils work with the sauna heat to diffuse calming or energizing scents—be sure to take those deep breaths. In saunas with chromotherapy, or light therapy, you’ll experience the added benefit of color to relax, energize, and more. Different colors provide varied health benefits that supplement those provided by the intense infrared heat.

Saunas Are Four Season Sanctuaries

Even if you’re living in a temperate climate, there will be chilly days when you’ll want to forego that morning jog or evening swim. Instead of cranking up the heat in your home, you could step into your personal home sauna to warm up. In summer months, saunas can help you build tolerance to balmy and humid weather. And any day of the year, a 10–20-minute session is great for helping induce a deeper sleep, especially if you don’t work out. With a personal home sauna, you’ll be steps away from wherever you slumber.

Personal home saunas are a versatile four-season retreat, offering a myriad of benefits that make them a haven of relaxation and well-being all year round. Regardless of the season, saunas bolster immune support, relieve stress, and contribute to improved health and vitality.

Why Owning a Personal Home Sauna Makes Sense

Owning a personal home sauna makes a lot of sense for several compelling reasons. Firstly, it provides convenient access to the numerous health benefits that saunas offer, such as relaxation, improved circulation, muscle recovery, and stress relief. Unlike public saunas, having one at home means you can enjoy these advantages at your convenience, without the need to travel or adhere to a schedule.

Moreover, a personal home sauna is a long-term investment in your well-being. Regular use can contribute to better cardiovascular health, immune system support, detoxification, and enhanced sleep quality. This can lead to improved overall physical and mental health, making it a valuable addition to your wellness routine.

Relax and rejuvenate in a space that’s entirely your own, without the potential discomfort of sharing a sauna with strangers. The privacy of owning a personal sauna appeals to those who value privacy during their relaxation time.

Ultimately, a personal home sauna is a long-term investment in your well-being. Regular use can contribute to better cardiovascular health, immune system support, detoxification, and enhanced sleep quality. This can lead to improved overall physical and mental health, making it a valuable addition to your wellness routine.

Now that we’ve covered the basics of home sauna ownership and why luxury and convenience are more accessible than ever, consider doing a deeper dive into the science-backed health benefits infrared offers. Check out healthmatesauna.com/sauna-benefits

Making a Splash With Outdoor Lighting PAST, PRESENT, & FUTURE

Once upon a time, pool lighting was… well, not so exciting. White lights, while warm and inviting, used to be the only option for curating a welcoming nighttime oasis. The pool industry has come a long way!

In the beginning…

To understand this evolution, one must look back at the history of lighting in general. Our story begins in 1879 when Thomas Edison created an incandescent bulb that was practical and reliable enough to illuminate homes. The world was forever changed by this innovation, and other big-thinking inventors were inspired by the possibilities lighting offered. As tinkering was underway, new inventions began dazzling the public: arc

lamps, oscillating lights, and even Christmas light strings were soon unveiled.

The American public, while still lighting many trees with candles, were awe-struck by this innovation. Lights brought a new warmth to homes across the nation, including the White House.

In the 1890s, President Grover Cleveland decorated his holiday tree with multi-colored string lights. An awe-struck public watched in amazement as the possibilities of a colorful future sat in plain sight. The Edison Illuminating Company produced the first example of this dazzling multi-colored light show, but each light string had to be wired by hand. As a result, light strings were rather pricey for the everyday consumer.

Nonetheless, this largely forgotten moment in history inched us toward a more colorful future, both inside and outside the home. In the 1920s, the Jazz Age was underway, and a flair for the extravagant became en vogue. It was at this time that Albert Sadacca and his brothers set out to make colored lights more widely available, and the public was downright dazzled by this colorful experience that could be introduced to their own homes.

Diving into well-lit pools

While innovations in lighting were transforming the world as we knew it, the young pool industry was also taking notice. Like lights, American pools were still a fairly young innovation in the early 20th century. Though Roman pools and natural

hot springs had long entertained Europeans, American pools had only started popping up on the East Coast in the 1880s. Those early pools were a hit, and the ensuing century would introduce new swimsuit fashions that made swimming even more enjoyable.

At the height of the Jazz Age, a man by the name of Wesley Bintz began introducing public pools to the Midwest. In the following decade, wet-niche pool lights were introduced, and swimmers everywhere were dazzled by well-lit oases.

Pool lights continued to evolve over the next few decades, becoming better at distributing illumination underwater, maintaining a cool temperature for lightbulbs, and embracing new innovations like fiberoptic lighting. A burgeoning industry was underway, and the concept of the American Dream grew to include a well-lit, welcoming pool. After all, the white picket fence alone wasn’t enough to create a backyard paradise!

Wading into a colorful future.

Of course, the public had already demonstrated a fascination with colored lighting, as it had long been a staple inside homes. Naturally, the next step in the evolution of colored lights was infusing them into outdoor spaces like pools.

Colored lights enabled pool owners to curate a specific mood at their pool, enhancing holiday celebrations and pool parties in a magical way.

Transforming lighting into a light show.

While colored lighting transformed

the pool industry as we know it, the era of innovation wasn’t (and still isn’t) quite over. Creative minds around the world were already pushing the boundaries of innovation, but automation further changed pool lighting as we know it.

Automation allows pool owners to connect equipment like pool pumps, water features, and – you guessed it – lighting in one easy-to-manage control center. In the smartphone era, connected apps like the Pentair Home and IntelliCenter2 app make pool automation as simple as the tap of a finger. Turning on and off pool features and setting schedules is made simple with an automation system.

What is a light show, you ask? Instead of sitting with just one color, light shows cycle through several different colors to create a visually striking scene. Imagine painting your pool in hues of sunset magenta and yellow or creating a Caribbean ambiance with blue and green! Pool owners with colored lights can attest to the majesty of a rainbow-hued backyard oasis.

The shift from incandescent to LED lighting.

Over the last few decades, LED lighting has been replacing older, less energy-efficient incandescent lights. This recent lighting evolution wave has been, in part, due to regulatory pressures from the Department of Energy which has banned certain types of low-efficiency incandescent lights from being sold in the market.

In the pool industry, advancements from incandescent to LED lighting took place in the mid-to-late 2000s. Pentair began utilizing LED technology in backyard poolscapes

with its first LED IntelliBrite large niche light in 2007. After tweaking and improving the design of that initial LED product, Pentair came out with the IntelliBrite® 5G Color and White LED Pool Light, which has been illuminating backyard paradises across the country for over a decade. Now, Pentair will be introducing a new and improved LED lighting product with upgraded optics, power supply, and more.

What makes LED lighting that much better than incandescents?

To understand why and how LED lights are more energy efficient than incandescent lighting, let’s take a deeper dive into the physics behind the light. An LED (which stands for light-emitting diode) is one type of semiconductor that converts electricity directly to light at a more efficient rate than incandescent lights, which actually burns a filament (the wire or thread in a light bulb) to produce light. For every watt of electricity, an LED produces much more light than heat compared to an incandescent, which is why you can change an LED light bulb while lit up – you can’t always do that with an incandescent bulb without burning your fingers.

Looking toward the future...

From the humble beginnings of lighting to its transformative days in early American pools, underwater lighting has come a long way. However, a trend toward sustainability and energy efficiency clues us in on what the future holds for the pool industry.

under the realm of hyperrealism, a genre that pushes the boundaries of realistic representation in art. Hyperrealism is different than other art techniques as it aims to create artworks that closely resemble highresolution photographs, often incorporating intricate details and meticulous precision. Artists in this style strive to capture the essence of their subjects with a level of detail that can leave viewers in awe of the artist’s technical prowess.

To achieve hyperrealism, artists employ various techniques and methods. One key aspect is the meticulous attention to detail. Every stroke of the brush is deliberate and intentional, capturing the nuances of light, texture, and form. Artists often utilize high-quality reference photographs to ensure accuracy in their representation. By carefully studying the intricate details and nuances within the photograph, they are able to translate these aspects onto the canvas.

The use of layering and glazing techniques is another hallmark of hyperrealistic art. Artists build up layers of paint, gradually building the form and texture of their subjects. This method allows for a heightened sense of realism, as the layering mimics the way light interacts with different surfaces and materials.

Additionally, hyperrealistic artists employ techniques such as blending, dry brushing, and glazing to achieve smooth transitions and soft edges. These techniques create a sense of depth and dimension, further enhancing the lifelike qualities of the artwork.

Johannes Wessmark’s hyperrealistic pool paintings are a testament to his exceptional skill and unwavering dedication to his craft. Through his keen eye for beauty and his technical precision, he transports viewers into a world where reality and art seamlessly merge. Whether it’s the intricate patterns of sunlight filtering through water or the glistening reflections on wet surfaces, Wessmark’s skilled hand brings these elements to life.

The artist’s attention to detail extends beyond the subject itself. He pays careful consideration to the surrounding environment, incorporating elements such as water ripples, bubbles, and distortions to further enhance the realism of his compositions. These subtle touches create a sense of movement and atmosphere, inviting viewers to immerse themselves in the scene and experience it firsthand. He understands the power of composition and framing to evoke specific emotions. By carefully arranging the elements within his paintings, he guides the viewer’s gaze and creates a visual story that goes beyond mere realism. Each piece becomes a window into a moment frozen in time.

Wessmark’s dedication to hyperrealism goes beyond mere technical prowess. He infuses his work with a deep sense of appreciation for the beauty he encounters in the world. Through his paintings, he invites viewers to share in his passion and rediscover the extraordinary within the ordinary.
