A BRENTSVILLE BICENTENNIAL COURT DAY CELEBRATION Ages 2+ As the 4th seat of Prince William County from 18221893, Brentsville was a bustling community full of business, agriculture, trades, and more. Every month during court days hundreds and even thousands would come to the courthouse to socialize, conduct business, purchase supplies, be entertained and more. For the 200th Anniversary of Brentsville Courthouse, join us for a historic Court Day where you can experience what Brentsville was like during its days as the courthouse of Prince William County. Activities will include mock trials, historic tradespeople, militia muster, markets, music, food, demonstrations, children’s activities, and more. Apr 30 / 10a-4p
BEN LOMOND HISTORIC SITE COOKING A TRADITIONAL ST. PATRICK’S DAY MEAL Ages 10+ Many 19th century Prince William County citizens traced their roots to Ireland. The meals they prepared reflected their Irish ancestry. Participants will be able to prepare and taste traditional Irish dishes in the historic slave quarter at Ben Lomond. 19TH CENTURY WOMANHOOD AT THE HAISLIP-HALL HOUSE Ages 6+ Join us at the Historic Haislip-Hall House for a day of living history to learn about what life was like for women in the 19th century. Learn about many aspects of the home that women oversaw from the daily household chores, education, medicine, and more. Participate in cooking demonstrations, sewing, and other household activities that women had to complete daily without the benefits of electricity or running water. Even take a little bit of women’s history home with you!
The Pringle family farmed Ben Lomond from 1855 to the end of the Civil War. Their farm included a large herd of Merino Sheep. Visitors will learn how farmers sheared wool in the 19th century and what farmers did with the wool. Please dress for the weather.

When the Brentsville Schoolhouse was in use between 1929 and 1944, one of the skills taught to students was penmanship. Have you ever wanted to improve your handwriting skills or be able to make your own invitations? Join historic preservation staff at the historic schoolhouse for a beginner’s introduction to the art of calligraphy! During this 2-hour workshop you will learn about the historic importance of writing forms, a few basic traditional calligraphy styles, have the chance to try out your own new calligraphy skills, and learn some history along the way. Advanced registration is required.
