POST-WORLD CUP FARE AWAITS YOU!

Everyone in Qatar was so caught up in the exhilarating ride that was the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 that the aftermath was always going to posit questions about how to get back on our feet, so-to-speak. After all, for any host at this level, it was going to be an event of a lifetime. And so it was — and by most counts — the best ever delivered, which of course, makes us all very proud. But business apart, who can complain about the absolutely wonderful cool climes we have experienced, of late, in Doha. We have had plenty of rain and chilly nights that made January as nearly memorable as December last year! A month and a half later, finally, the hangover is giving way to activities that promise to keep us engaged and enthralled. Beginning this month, we have the annual National Sport Day, which never fails to provide the necessary impetus to prioritise a healthy lifestyle. At the risk of repetition, we strongly urge our readers to get out and about — not just on the dedicated day, but to embrace the regimen 365 days a year.

At Qatar Happening, we are pleased to offer you plenty of food for thought every month.

Qatar ExxonMobil Open and Qatar Total Open will also hog the limelight in February as the world’s top tennis stars make a beeline for the Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex to vie for the men’s and women’s trophies.

This will be followed later in the month by the Legends League Cricket — an exciting new venture that Qatar — home to legion of fans with a subcontinental base will be keen to lap up. Stars from India, Pakistan, West Indies and Australia will be hosted by the Qatar Cricket Association. Find out about this and more in this edition and keep us posted with your feedback!

PSG VS RIYADH ALL-STAR XI

BLOCKBUSTER CLASH PROVES TO BE A RIVETING SHOW FOR FOOTBALL FANS IN SAUDI ARABIA AND THE REGION

BLOCKBUSTER

A BLOCKBUSTER CLASH INVOLVING WORLD CUP QATAR 2022 HEROES AT THE KING FAHD INTERNATIONAL STADIUM IN FRONT OF 60,000 SCREAMING FANS ON JAN 19, 2023 CLEARLY HIGHLIGHTED THE ENVIOUS FOOTBALL CRAZE THAT IS PREVALENT IN THE MIDDLE EAST

When Riyadh All Star XI captain Cristiano Ronaldo, 37, walked over to Neymar Jr. for a quick handshake and a hug, it was the start of a PSG sequence that was hard to ignore and even harder to miss for the football fans. Soon afterwards after his greeting with Neymar, Ronaldo - looking supremely fit - turned to PSG striker and French World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe who smiled at his childhood hero and the two quickly embraced warmly. A fraction of a second later, Argentina’s World Cup winning hero Lionel Messi also hugged Ronaldo as two the lights of global football acknowledged each other’s presence before the kick-off of the friendly clash that saw a mad rush for tickets prior to the game. In one fan moment that was hard to match from every football fan present at the King Fahd International Stadium, Saudi real estate Mushref Al-Ghamdi won a ticket bid worth a staggering $2.6 million to watch Messi and his PSG giants play the friendly against a Saudi select XI including Ronaldo and his teammates from Al Nasr club and their arch-rivals Al Hilal. To whip up a fan frenzy prior to the match, Turki AlSheikh, the chief head of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority (GEA), announced a charity auction for a ticket that would allow the highest bidder the chance of taking photos with players and access to the locker rooms. After Al-Ghamdi clinched the ticket auction, the GEA chief - who is also an advisor to the Royal Court - tweeted:

“Congratulations, you deserve it, and may God reward you with good.” The entire amount was handed over to a charity, officials said. On the pitch, there was less camaraderie among the players but plenty of adrenaline boosting moves and goals that thrilled the packed King Fahd International Stadium. A ninegoal thriller was clinched by Messi and his PSG team-mates, thanks to a strike by Hugo Ekitike in the 78th minute. Messi and Marquinhos were quick to find the net for the visitors but a Ronaldo brace delighted the packed house at Saudi’s biggest football venue. Sporting black and gold kits, PSG hit the ground running with their moves in the first half. In the third minute, Messi produced a deft finish for his side’s first goal. After a cross from Neymar, Messi sent the ball past goalkeeper Mohamed Al-Owais with slick ease. Shortly afterwards, Ronaldo converted a penalty to level the game. Despite Bernat being shown the red card, 10man PSG scored through defender Marquinhos. The lead didn’t last long as Ronaldo leveled again on the verge of

February 2023 | QH | 5

halftime. After the break, Ramos found the net in the first 10 minutes, but South Korea’s Jang Hyun-soo made it 3-3. A clumsy handball by Ali Al-Bulaihi gave the Ligue 1 giants a penalty, which was expertly converted by Mbappe. It was Mbappe’s last move as the French star was taken off shortly after along with teammates Messi and Neymar. Ronaldo also was taken off a little later. Ekitike then extended PSG’s lead to 5-3 with a slick move. Anderson Talisca reduced the deficit for the combined XI in added time.

Soon after the final whistle, the 60,000 fans present at the venue and the ones watching on TV around Saudi Arabia and the region were treated to a spectacular fireworks show. Turki AlSheikh, who accompanied Bollywood

icon Amitabh Bachan at the opening ceremony, said in an interview that Saudi Arabia is just getting started to bring more envious sport action and entertainment to the country of 32 million. “This was a big match but this is nothing (compared to) what will happen with Vision 2030,” Turki Al Sheikh said in an interview with AFP. In recent years, Saudi Arabia has hosted boxing fights involving heavyweight star Anthony Joashua twice, F1 race in Jeddah, and the Dakar Rally the last three years. Saudi Arabia has also bankrolled a new golf series - LIV Golf - that has attracted

major winners Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau, and Phil Mickelson. The LIV Golf series is fronted by former World No. 1 Greg Norman. In the coming years, Saudi Arabia will be aiming to host the AFC Asian Cup but are assured to stage the 2034 Asian Games in Riyadh. The Asian Winter Games in 2029 will also be held in Saudi Arabia on ‘artificial’ snow. “My leader will surprise the Saudis with much more,” Al-Sheikh told AFP. “We are ready to fulfil his demands at any time. But what’s coming is much greater.” Saudi Arabia, in recent times, have openly declared their desire to host the FIFA World Cup in 2030 with Egypt and Greece. During the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, the Saudi sport minister said hosting the Olympics also remained a goal.

With Ronaldo signing up for Al Nasr for a $200 million-a-year deal, Saudi Arabia is clearly getting ready to bring about further enhancements in its vibrant football culture. Saudi Arabia has featured six FIFA World Cup tournaments, having played in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018 and 2022. Their best performance was in 1994 when they reached the round of 16. The clash at King Fahd International Stadium on Jan 19, 2023, is likely to be a turning point in all its sporting endeavours. n

mates and rivals. I am looking forward to a competitive season.” The world’s highest wicket-taker Muthiah Muralitharann said in another statement: “I look forward to playing another season with even more enthusiasm and fun.”

Legends League Cricket Masters is the international league from the house of Legends League Cricket comprising three teams, namely India Maharajas, Asia Lions and World Giants. A total of 8 matches have been scheduled at the Asian Town Cricket Stadium, a venue that has hosted a number of international matches involving Afghanistan and the Netherlands in the men’s game. Pakistan’s women’s team and that of South Africa have also played at this venue over the years. In recent times, QCA has also hosted a number of international events including the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifiers, the ACC Twenty20 Cup and the ACC Women’s Twenty20 Cup.

“Players like Sehwag, Harbhajan, Muralitharan and Chris Gayle, you can see them playing seriously in one country and at different venues. It has been fabulous,” said LLC Commissioner Shastri. “They have taken this league to a different level and we have to thank them for this because the reach of this series now is unbelievable. When you have legends like Shane Watson, Ross Taylor, the Pathan brothers, Gambhir and Sehwag, It’s tremendous fun,” he added in a video released by LLC.

New Zealand’s retired pacer Mitchell McClenaghan tweeted after his participation at the previous edition held in India: “Thoroughly enjoyed the @llct20 tournament this year - was great to get around a lot of the greats of the gamehave some fun but play some awesome cricket too! LOVED IT!”

Sri Lanka’s Farveez Maharoof tweeted: “Was a great honor playing alongside many greats & most importantly winning the tournament for capitals. Had a fab time in the @llct20 which was organized very well! Looking forward to the next few days to recharge & recover from the injury I picked up!”

Ireland’s top all-rounder Kevin O’Brien said in a tweet: “What an amazing few weeks in #IncredibleIndia. Thanks to all the fans who came to the games, the @llct20 organisers and of course the super management team and players. Until next year.” n

Ticket details and match updates will be shared by QCA closer to the action day.

The game of cricket became popular way back in Doha in 1977 in the parking lot of the Khalifa International Stadium. At the time only 8 teams featured in the Qatar National League. In 1980, 12 major teams decided to form the Qatar Cricket Association (QCA) under the Presidency of Mr. M.A. Shahid, and Late Mr. Saifuddin Khalid, as its General Secretary.

Cricket popularity soared with each passing day and the game developed quickly through the contributions of the business communities in the country. The QCA President and players decided to form a council under the umbrella of the Qatar Cricket Association in 1987. The prime objective was to improve the level of cricket by bringing it to a national level and to gain recognition of the local sport controlling body by aligning QCA with the local clubs. The QCA, under the leadership of Mr. M.A. Shahid, quickly evolved and expanded. With the sincere efforts of the President, H.E. Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabor Al Thani consented to become its Chairman and Mr. Fahad Hussain Al Fardan as Vice Chairman. His Excellency the Chairman made a tremendous contribution to cricket’s development by setting up two additional grounds outside the Khalifa International Stadium bringing the total number of grounds over there to seven. In 1996, the QCA was given legal authority by the Youth and Sport General Authority (YASA) through Resolution No. 13/1996 issued by H.E. the President of YASA. As per the resolution, the QCA Executive Board was formed with H.E. Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassim Bin Jabor Al Thani, Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, State of Qatar, as its Chairman. Cricket across schools in Qatar progressed rather rapidly. The game is played in accordance with the regulations of the International Cricket Council (ICC). The QCA was accepted as an Affiliate Member of the ICC in June 1999. The QCA was also accepted as an Associate Member of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) soon afterwards. His Excellency the Chairman, keeping an eye on the growing interest in cricket among the residents, allowed a ground near the Doha Golf Course for use of league matches and other annual fixtures. QCA has been associated with the Qatar Olympic Committee who also make arrangements to send Qatar’s national teams in various age brackets to participate in cricket tournaments organized by the Asian Cricket Council. The QCA is receiving training/coaching facilities from the Asian Cricket Council. QCA now has around 20 qualified umpires and 12 coaches.

The QCA has formed national teams meeting the criteria of the ICC and ACC through schools cricket to form Under-15, Under-17, Under-19 teams and subsequently the national squad. These national teams have participated in all the tournaments organized by the ACC and the ICC. Qatar won the Under-15 ACC Challenge Cup in 2007.

In 2007, QCA generated a huge amount of interest among girls and the women’s game was launched with a lot of fanfare among the residents. Cricket became popular among women and the Qatar national squad featured in the ACC Under-19 tournament in Dec 2008 when they finished an impressive 5th out of 12 teams.

QATAR PREPARES FOR TENNIS EXTRAVAGANZA

IF YOU WANT TO WATCH THE WORLD'S BEST PLAYERS ON THE MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TOURS OVER A PERIOD OF 14 DAYS, THEN HEAD TO THE ICONIC KHALIFA TENNIS AND SQUASH COMPLEX TO REALIZE YOUR DREAM

12 | QH | February 2023 QATAR OPEN

This February, the Khalifa Tennis and Squash Complex (KTSC) will have a different feel to it when the world's best players descend on Doha. For the first time since the inaugural Qatar Open held in 1993, the iconic KTSC will be a beehive of activity for two successive weeks when the Qatar ExxonMobil Open and the Qatar Total Open will be jammed together over 14 days of non-stop tennis. The Qatar Total Open will be held from Feb 13 to 19 whereas the Qatar ExxonMobil Open will be staged from Feb 20 to 25.

It will be 14 days of non-stop excitement for the tennis fans in the country and the region, not to mention the ticket holders flying from around the world. For almost two decades, the Qatar ExxonMobil Open launched the new tennis season at the start of January every year but because of the COVID-19 pandemic around the globe, the dates had to be changed in the 2021 season and last year. With the sport world in general and tennis family in particular returning back to its original

dates for 2023, Doha has agreed to stage the two events back-to-back after the induction of new tournaments prior to the Australian Open last month. With two weeks of non-stop tennis buzz at KTSC, fans in Qatar have developed an envious affinity with the ATP Tour events (since 1993) and the WTA Tour tournaments (since 2001). From the time Boris Becker beat Goran Ivanisevic in the final of the inaugural Qatar Open in 1993, tennis popularity in Qatar has only seen an upward graph in fan following. Grand Slam stars like Stefan Edberg, Petr Korda, Jim Courier, Marcelo Rios, Roger Federer, Andy Murray, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic have won the Qatar ExxonMobil Open titles on more than one occasion. Edberg, Federer, Murray and Djokovic, in fact, have won titles in Doha twice each.

Eight years after staging the first ATP Tour event in Doha, the Qatari

capital became the first destination to welcome the WTA Tour family for the first Qatar Total Open. Starting from Martina Hingis winning the title in 2001 until last year when Polish giant Iga Swiatek emerged as the champion in Doha, the Qatar Total Open has been a major hit with the fans for the last 22 years years. The WTA Tour event came to Doha for the first time in February 2001 at the KTSC. The tournament was welcomed by a lot of enthusiasm and cheer from the local fans eager to witness the top women’s players in action in Qatar. In the first Qatar Open in 2001, players like Hingis, Mary Pierce of France, Sandrine Testud of France, Barbara Schett of Austria, Iva Majoli of Croatia, Rita Grande of Italy and Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand arrived in Doha. Hingis beat Testud to win the tournament and bag the prize money of US $ 27,000. A year later, multi-Grand Slam winner Monica Seles of the US beat Tanasugarn to win the tournament. Seles came back to defend her title in 2003 while Russia’s Myskina beat Elena Likhovtseva to clinch the title in 2004.

The following year, it was Myskina again as the Russian beat compatriot Svetalana Kuznetsova in the final. In February 2005, tennis diva Maria Sharapova of Russia walked away with the top prize of US $ 94,000. Sharapova emerged winner again in 2008 while Russia's Nadia Petrova bagged the trophy in 2006. Justine Henin (2007), Vera Zvonareva (2011),

Victoria Azarenka (2012 and 2013), Simona Halep (2014), Lucie Safarova (2015), Carla Suárez Navarro (2016), Karolína Plíšková (2017), Petra Kvitová (2018 and 2021), Elise Mertens (2019), Aryna Sabalenka (2020), and Swiątek have also picked up the winner's trophy in Qatar. Myskina, Sharapova, Azarenka and Kvitova are the players to have won two trophies each in Qatar. Swiatek, who beat Kontaveit in last year's final, said after lifting the Falcon Trophy: "I'm pretty happy that I was composed and I stayed in the same shape I was for the whole tournament, because playing finals is a different feeling. It's always a little bit more stressful. I knew that Anett is going to play well, because she's shown consistency throughout the whole six months, I would say. I needed to put pressure on her, and I'm pretty happy that I did that well today. It's so nice to have these kinds of matches where you don't actually have problems with keeping the pace and with staying aggressive, because right now I'm a more aggressive player, and I really love it, because it's giving me a lot of confidence on and off the court. It's just making sometimes life on court easier." Swiatek added: "I want to thank Tournament Director Saad Al Mohannadi, the WTA and all those who make this tournament possible. It's been great. I love it here. This is my second time. I'm always going to remember the memories of this week. The support that I got here was amazing and even though I've been on tour for like three years now, it's

THE KHALIFA TENNIS AND SQUASH COMPLEX

The venue was inaugurated by His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al Thani, the Father Emir, in 1992. The stadium had an initial capacity of 4,500 seats but it was later expanded and refurbished in 2008 to seat the current capacity of 7,000 spectators. The year 2008 also saw additional renovations to the set-up of the venue with the addition of new stands, VIP boxes, Lower, Middle and Upper sections and the VIP Village, Public Village and the Food Court. The Public Village, VIP Village, and the Kids Zone have been spruced up and the venue has been transformed into an interactive, entertaining home for tennis fans. Currently, the venue has one Centre Court, four show courts and 20 outside courts. This makes the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex the ideal setting for one of the greatest sporting events on the women's and men's Tours. Tickets are available in shopping malls across the country in addition to the ticket kiosks located at Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex. You can also get your tickets online through www.qatartennis.or

place,” the Doha winner said. Bautista Agut, who beat Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-4 in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open final to win his first ATP Tour title since 2019, was pleased with his performance in Doha. He said: “I am very happy. It has been a while since I lifted a trophy. I have been working very hard to reach another final and to get the chance to win another title. It was a big dream for me to win a title and I have now won twice in Doha. It is very special for me and I am very happy. It was a really tough final. This year we played without wind, which was much better for me. It was not easy to recover after a really tough battle yesterday, but I think I did a good job today. It is my 10th ATP Tour title and I am very happy.” n

NATIONAL SPORT DAY: A DAY

TO CELEBRATE

SPORT AS A WAY OF LIFE

AMIRI DECREE NO. 80 OF 2011 DESIGNATED THE SECOND TUESDAY OF FEBRUARY EACH YEAR SHALL BE A NATIONAL SPORT DAY IN THE STATE OF QATAR WHERE EVERYONE IS ENCOURAGED TO PARTICIPATE IN SPORTING ACTIVITIES WITH FAMILY, COLLEAGUES, FRIENDS AND COMMUNITY MEMBERS LIVING IN THE COUNTRY.

This year will be the biggest Qatar National Sport Day in the history of the initiative that was launched with an Amir Decree in 2011. The Amir His Highness Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani will lead the activities planned across the country. The government organizations, the private corporations, the academic institutions, the sport federations working under the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), shopping malls and sport clubs in Qatar will also take active part in the day’s activities. It is a day of engaging with the young and old in the country with sport activities, events or tournaments that not only bring out the competitive edge among those pursuing sport seriously but help the ones who want to break a sweat for a healthy heart, mind and soul.

Last year, HH the Amir walked around the Al Bayt Stadium Park’s walkway in the company of dozens of school students. The day’s event kicked off to raise

THE GOOD SPORT

awareness among young people on the importance of sport and encouraging them to adopt healthy lifestyles and take care of physical fitness. The Al Bayt Stadium Park has green spaces surrounding the entire venue which hosted the opening match of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 late last year. The Park also includes sport facilities, tracks for running and cycling, in addition to horse riding track. The park is one of the most prominent projects that is considered a legacy that will be used after the World Cup. National Sport Day was established in 2012 with the aim of uniting the nation in a shared celebration of sport and inspiring people to lead active and healthy lifestyles. Qatar is one of the few countries in the world to dedicate a public holiday to sport and the number of people that turned up to join in activities in the past years show how it continues to be a huge success. “We are proud that Qatar is one of the few countries in the world and the first in the Middle East to dedicate a public holiday to National Sport Day,” President of the QOC, H.E. Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, said. He continued: “Once again, National Sport Day will provide a unique platform to inspire and unite our nation through sport and share the Olympic spirit in one

place. Qatar is committed to putting excitement and enjoyment at the heart of all the sporting activities on offer. We are determined to see an increase in physical activity in our country, not simply on the basis of the number of people taking part, but because of the wider value it will have for our collective health, wellbeing and happiness, as individuals and as a society.”

Speaking about National Sport Day last year, Secretary General of the QOC, Jassim Al Buenain said: “We can’t wait for National Sport Day! This year promises to be bigger and better than ever with all federations organising activities that will give everyone the opportunity to have a go at sport. When we say everyone we really do mean it! This is a day for all ages, all abilities and all our people to come together and enjoy the thrill of being active.”

He added: “Whilst festivities like this are rooted in a desire to provide a fun and informal environment for all those who want to take part, they are also extremely important if we are to nurture our next generation of superstars. That’s why this year we will also be joined by Team Qatar’s very best athletes who will show the way and support everyone who puts their hand up to give a sport a go.”

Last year, football icon David Beckham attended the launch of a new Generation Amazing Community Club on Qatar National Sport Day. Located in Lusail – the city that hosted the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™ final on 18 December – the club provides sporting and educational activities for young people. It also teaches key life skills like communication, organisation, teamwork and leadership

while aiming to promote gender equality and inclusiveness. Beckham, who represented his country at three FIFA World Cup™ tournaments, was the special guest at the opening and took part in a host of football activities and observed literacy classes and art workshops. “Community clubs like this one have the potential to change young people’s lives,” said Beckham. “It is great to be here today to see the valuable work that Generation Amazing are doing. I have no doubt that this facility will help young people achieve their goals.”

Qatar Foundation also celebrated National Sport Day 2022 with an array of community-focused activities and events – including the launch of an inclusive football tournament. The activities, which were sponsored by Ooredoo and ranged from fitness classes, Sport competitions, and exercise challenges – such as Zumba, boxing, and yoga – reflect Qatar Foundation’s (QF) commitment to encouraging healthy, active living, which it supports through year-round sport programs.

Qatari swimmer Nada Arakji said: “I am very excited for Qatar National Sport Day this year. It is an opportunity for everyone in the country Qatar to participate in

sport, and it is such a great honor for me to be here in QF, especially as I am a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University in Qatar. It is so nice to be back and I am honestly very excited.”

Qatari taekwondo athlete Kaltham Al Mutawa said: “Sport has a major and important role in my life, and has helped me learn many things. NASSER SALEH AL ATTIYAH DEFENDS DAKAR CROWN IN STYLE

QATAR’S FINEST ATHLETE CONTINUES TO AMAZE WITH HIS DAREDEVIL RALLYING AND THE IMPRESSIVE RESULTS THAT HE KEEPS CHURNING OUT

MOTORSPORT
20 | QH | February 2023

Qatar's greatest motorsport hero by far is Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah. A decorated athlete - he's a bronze medal winner at the 2012 Olympic Games in skeet shooting - Al Attiyah last month won the Dakar Rally title for the fifth time in 20 starts, a staggering achievement by the 52-year-old from Qatar. From battling the rough desert terrains across the world to the calm and concentrationdriven game like skeet shooting, Al Attiyah is a sport package that is hard to find in the modern era. Al Attiyah maintained his lead over Sébastien Loeb and Fabian Lurquin to take his 5th Dakar victory in Saudi Arabia after 14 gruelling stages. He now holds more titles than Ari Vatanen of Finland and is second only to Frenchman Stéphane Peterhansel with 8 titles. A revered figure in his country, Al Attiyah - behind the wheels of Toyota Gazoo Racing and Overdrive Racing - was thrilled to win the Dakar crown in the company of trusted co-driver Mathieu Baumel from France. "Still I am not feeling that I have finished as a winner. I am really so happy. I want to thank (co-driver) Mathieu (Baumel), my team and all of my sponsors," Al Attiyah said. "We just finished and I'm so happy. It was a difficult Dakar for everyone. It's crazy to manage to defend my title. I'm very happy to win five times, and Mathieu four… Sorry, Mathieu! I respect Ari enormously, he's still my idol. I always want to win more

and more, now I want to defend my world champion's title. We didn't have to attack like crazy. We managed to get through the second week and win the Dakar at the end, that's what really matters," he added. Al Attiyah's previous titles came in 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2022. The affable Qatari sport star also finished runners-up in 2010, 2016, 2018, 2020 and 2021.

His Excellency Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC), was quick to congratulate Al Attiyah's grand win. The QOC chairman said in a tweet:" The second successive win is an indication of courage and confidence that is the hallmark of our great sport hero. We are proud of your achievement and congratulate Nasser Al-Attiyah on winning the Dakar Rally title for the fifth time."

The Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) president Abdulrahman Al Mannai hailed Al Attiyah as a 'national hero'. "Nasser Saleh Al Attiyah is a role model for all Qatari youth, not only for those in motor sport but every sportpersons who want to go after sporting achievements and raise the name of Qatar high at all international forums," he said. Al-Mannai said that al-Attiyah gave a distinguished performance in the Dakar Rally this year after he followed a carefully planned strategy in the early stages and led the rally by a comfortable margin and then fought the rest of the stages with the aim of

maintaining the lead and not taking risks.

Al Attiyah, who has won the Middle the East Rally Championship (MERC) title a record 18 times - has a clear path in front of him - he wants to continue racing as the Qatari star has intentions of stopping just yet.

"It's an amazing feeling to win (the Dakar Rally title) for the fifth time. We need more (titles). We just need to keep going. To win Dakar was very important for me," Al Attiyah said last month in Saudi Arabia. "My happiness is indescribable. We wish to taste success in the upcoming stages of the World Desert Rally Championship “RAID-2023.” Winning the Dakar Rally title did not come out of nowhere, but it was a result of fierce determination and perseverance from me and my team. I want to thank all my fans and brothers in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the region. Everyone who supported me deserves a 'thank you' from us. We are thrilled to be racing in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia," Al Attiyah said. Loeb admitted Al Attiyah was difficult to beat. Loeb said: "It's good. After the first week we had, we couldn't have hoped for much better. It was impossible to beat Nasser head-on. He had a great race and made no mistakes. We have to be happy with what we got. Our second part of the rally was amazing, with a terrific comeback. We're tied for the championship. We're levelling the playing field." n

The 45th edition of the Dakar came to an end in Dammam after 14 stages that saw dramatic turnarounds in every category. Nasser Al Attiyah's victorious campaign did not come as a surprise, but his first successful title defence earned him the fifth triumph of his career and the distinction of winning by the widest margin seen in the car race in 20 years. Second at 1 h 20, Sébastien Loeb bent the knee to the Qatari, but he also added his name to the Dakar record books with a string of six consecutive stage wins (seven in total).

The scenario that unfolded in the motorbike race was even crazier. In a first for the category, Kevin Benavides seized the lead on the very last day, knocking Toby Price from the top of the general standings to prevail by 43 seconds, the narrowest winning margin ever in the Dakar. Similarly, in the SSVs, the youngest Dakar entrant ever benefited from a massive plot twist in the last stage, as the leader, Rokas Baciuška, surrendered the top spot to the 18-year-old Pole Eryk Goczał, who will share the podium with his father, Marek, in third place. A family that races together stays together.

In T3, victory went to Austin Jones, who had already brought the T4 trophy home last year, while the truck title went to Janus van Kasteren, the first Dutch winner of the race since Gerard de Rooy in 2016.

The winners and all the other competitors who showed their resolve to complete this gruelling route will be feted this evening at the podium ceremony in Ithra, at the cultural centre built by Aramco to mark the 75th anniversary of the company, which joined the Dakar as a major partner this year.

235 of the 355 vehicles that started the 2023 Dakar have made it to the finish: 80 motorbikes (out of 121), 10 quads (18), 46 T1 and T2 cars (67), 38 lightweight prototypes (47), 39 SSVs (45) and all 22 trucks, along with 80 out of 88 crews in the third edition of the Dakar Classic, the regularity race for 20th-century vehicles.

QMMF SET FOR REVISED QATAR INTERNATIONAL RALLY IN FEBRUARY

The Qatar Motor and Motorcycle Federation (QMMF) will host round two of the 2023 FIA Middle East Rally Championship (MERC) for the second successive season on February 16th-18th.

Officials at the QMMF have laid on a slightly revised three-day format that offers 13 timed special stages and 209.69km competitive kilometres in a route of 618.52km.

The Sultanate of Oman will arrange the opening rally in the six-event series on January 26th-28th and the Qatar event will then be followed by further rounds in Kuwait (March 16th-18th), Jordan (May 18th-20th), Lebanon (September 1st-3rd) and Cyprus (September 22nd-24th).

Scrutineering facilities and the media centre will be based at the LCSC Karting Academy for the first time. After technical checks on Wednesday and Thursday (February 15th and 16th), the event will get underway with the traditional pre-event press conference and ceremonial start.

The competitive action fires into life with a new floodlit 3.27km super special stage at the LCSC Karting Academy from 20.00hrs on Thursday evening. The demanding Qatar deserts will then play host to two days of competitive action. Two loops of three specials are planned for Friday (February 17th) with competitors tackling the challenging Al-Khor special and revised gravel tests at Ras Laffan and Al-Thakira in the north of the country

Two passes through a new stage at Waab Al-Mashrab and similar stages to last year at Al-Waab and Umm Birka are on the agenda for Saturday (February 18th) before the post-event press conference, prize giving and ceremonial finish take centre stage from 18.30hrs onwards.

The rally will be held under the chairmanship of QMMF President Abdulrahman Al-Mannai, senior committee member Abdulrazaq Al-Kuwari and the QMMF’s Executive Director Amro Al-Hamad. Portugal’s Pedro Almeida will work as the Clerk of the Course alongside his deputy, Rashed Al-Sulaiti. “After the success of the Qatar International Rally in 2022, that attracted several exciting names from the world of rallying, we are particularly excited about hosting the 2023 event,” said QMMF Executive Director Amro AlHamad. “Our team has made slight revisions and improvements to the format, made the route even more compact and introduced tweaks to polish what is already viewed as one of the leading rallies in the region.”

The QMMF has also announced a series of generous concessions for international and GCC competitors keen to tackle the Qatar event. International competitors (cars and T4 entries) will be given a $6,000 shipping allowance, with GCC entrants receiving $3,000, subject to vehicles passing scrutineering and administrative checks. g

CASHLESS PAYMENTS SURGE IN QATAR

QH ON THE RISE OF CONTACTLESS PAYMENTS AND WHY IT MAKES BUSINESS SENSE

Today’s consumers are becoming increasingly reliant on technology to make payments, and businesses need to adapt to the changing market. Investing in cashless payment systems is a smart move for any business looking to keep up with the latest trends and provide customers with a convenient and secure payment option. The number of contactless card purchases made worldwide will increase by an average of 23% a year and reach a total of more than 522bn by 2026, up by more than 370bn on the 149bn recorded in 2020, according to a forecast by Retail Banking Research. Lloyds Bank data shows that consumers in the United Kingdom use contactless payments in nearly 90% of face-to-face payment transactions — a massive increase prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the bank’s findings 65% of face-to-face payments were made using contactless debit cards in June 2019, in the early stages of the pandemic – but by June 2022, this had reached 87%. The bank said that in June 2020 the proportion of face-to-face payments made by contactless debit cards was 72%, and in June 2021 it was 83%.

Going forward, the Qatar payments market is likely to see a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.21% between now and 2027. Interest in digital payments has seen robust growth in the region, where a number of faster payment initiatives have taken hold

In the context of Qatar, contactless payments were a growing trend even before the pandemic. However, since the pandemic, almost all sectors — from healthcare to finance to education and retail — were compelled to shift to a digital-first realm as a safety measure. The Covid crisis spurred digital commerce way ahead of time, leading contactless and other digital payment options to emerge as speedy and efficient alternatives to cash safety measures aside.

Even the recently held FIFA World Cup offered a slick example of how this system does wonders in terms of safety, security, convenience and reach.

TRANSACTIONS

The country hosted more than 1.4 million visitors during this time and their arrival was preceded by a massive logistical challenge for the banking sector: how to seamlessly and safely process payments despite the huge increase in payment traffic volumes. To meet this challenge, a number of banks worked under the supervision of the Central Bank to provide a digital banking platform ensuring all vendors had cashless payment capabilities and visitors conveniently used their international cards for payments. The logistical challenges of this plan were huge. But it was met with speed and efficiency and a good example was outfitting thousands of taxis with virtual POS machines so people didn’t have to pay cash.

Going forward, the Qatar payments market is likely to see a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 14.21% between now and 2027. Interest in digital payments has seen robust growth in the region, where a number of faster payment initiatives have taken hold.

The move towards a cashless economy has seen the Qatar Central Bank (QCB) employing electronic wallets to harness the cashless payments. To this effect, QCB has also issued a unified QR code specification and standard. For

instance, users can pay by scanning the QR code with their mobile phones at retail stores or on public transport. E-commerce in the country is bound to gain ascendancy as more consumers get their goods and services provided digitally, seamlessly, and speedily. As a result, companies all around us want a pie of the e-commerce payment spend. This will certainly augment the payments market in the future, particularly in the services sector. Ooredoo, Qatar’s leading telecom, introduced a digital MasterCard via Ooredoo Money app that could be had in just a few taps. The Digital MasterCard is available as a virtual card in Ooredoo Money app and can load the card as per need. It can be used for safe, convenient and secure online payments anywhere in the world where MasterCard is accepted online. Last year, Vodafone Qatar’s Infinity Payment Solutions (IPS) also launched iPay, Qatar’s first licensed e-wallet. Licensed by Qatar Central Bank, iPay is a secure e-wallet developed by IPS in partnership with Commercial Bank of Qatar, Gulf Exchange and Paytm. iPay offers customers direct access to instant local transfers to all banks and wallets under the Qatar mobile payment network as well as international remittance and merchant payments. n

WHY BUSINESSES SHOULD INVEST IN CASHLESS PAYMENT SYSTEMS

Increased efficiency: Cashless payment systems help businesses streamline the payment process, which reduces the time it takes to complete a transaction. This can lead to faster customer checkouts and a more efficient operation overall.

Reduced risk of loss: Cashless payment systems eliminate the need to handle large amounts of cash, which can reduce the risk of theft or loss.

Improved security: Cashless payment systems are more secure than cash, as they provide an extra layer of protection from fraud and other security threats.

Lower transaction fees: Credit cards and other cashless payment systems typically have lower transaction fees than cash, which can help businesses save money in the long run.

Access to more customers: Cashless payment systems can help businesses reach a wider audience. Customers who prefer to pay via credit card or other cashless payment methods will be more likely to patronise a business that offers this option.

Greater convenience: Cashless payment systems are more convenient than cash, as they allow customers to pay quickly and easily. This can help businesses attract more customers and increase their sales.

Improved customer service: Cashless payment systems can help businesses provide better customer service. By eliminating the need to wait in line to pay with cash, customers will be able to complete their orders quickly and easily.

The benefits of investing in cashless payment systems are clear. Not only do they help businesses save time and money, but they also provide customers with a convenient and secure payment option. For businesses looking to stay competitive and meet the needs of their customers, investing in cashless payment systems is a smart move.

QATARENERGY’S NEW $6B JV TO HERALD SUPER EFFICIENCY

QH REVIEWS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF RAS LAFFAN PETROCHEMICAL COMPLEX AND ITS LEADING EDGE IN THE REGION AND GLOBALLY

“The (project) will not only facilitate further expansion in the downstream and petrochemical sectors in Qatar, but will also reinforce our integrated position as a major global player in the upstream, LNG, and downstream sectors”

SIGNING

THE DEAL AT A GLANCE

• The $6 billion Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Complex is expected to be the largest of its kind in the Middle East.

• The complex includes an ethane cracker with a capacity of 2.1 million tonnes of ethylene per year.

• It will boast two high-density polyethylene derivative units with a total production capacity of 1.7 million tonnes per year.

• QatarEnergy will hold a 70% stake in the venture and Chevron Phillips Chemicals 30%.

• Qatar’s ethylene production capacity will double after it becomes operational. Local polymer production will also surge from 2.6 million to 4 million tonnes per annum.

QatarEnergy and Chevron Phillips last month announced a joint venture to build a $6 billion petrochemicals complex in the Ras Laffan industrial city. The complex is set to be the largest of its kind in the region and will raise the country’s overall petrochemical production capacity to nearly 14 million tonnes per annum.

HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy Engineer Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi and CEO of Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) Bruce Chinn signed the Final Investment Decision (FID) deal to build the facility.

The largest investment ever in Qatar’s petrochemical sector will see QatarEnergy holding a 70% stake in the venture with CPChem sharing 30% under the agreement.

The project underpins how the region’s oil producers are expanding further into petrochemicals to move into new markets and find new sources of income beyond exporting crude oil and natural gas.

The Ras Laffan Petrochemicals Complex will comprise of two separate plants, each producing petrochemicals such as ethylene, propylene, and polyethylene. The two plants will also be equipped with a range of advanced technologies and processes that are

designed to maximise energy efficiency and minimise environmental impact. Notably, the complex will have an ethane cracker with a capacity of 2.1 million tonnes of ethylene per annum, making it the largest in the Middle East and one of the largest globally.

The project is a major investment for both QatarEnergy and Chevron Phillips and it will help to drive economic growth in the region. It is expected to create thousands of new jobs in Qatar and help diversify the country’s economy. It will also provide a boost to the local manufacturing industry as the petrochemicals produced by the complex will be used in a wide range of products.

February 2023 | QH | 33
HE Minister of State for Energy Affairs, President and CEO of QatarEnergy Engineer Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi with CEO of Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem) Bruce Chinn during the announcement at a presser.

Engineer Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi said: “This marks QatarEnergy’s largest investment ever in Qatar’s petrochemicals sector and the first direct investment in 12 years. It will double our ethylene production capacity and increase our local polymer production from 2.6 to more than 4 million tons per annum and place the utmost emphasis on sustainable growth and the environment.”

“There is no doubt that this cornerstone investment in Ras Laffan Industrial City marks an important milestone in QatarEnergy’s downstream expansion strategy. It will not only facilitate further expansion in the downstream and petrochemical sectors in Qatar, but will also reinforce our integrated position as a major global player in the upstream, LNG, and downstream sectors,” the minister noted.

Kaabi felt this would be further enhanced once the new world-scale petrochemical project in Orange, Texas, in the US comes online in partnership with CPChem, executed by their joint venture Golden Triangle Polymers Company.

Qatar’s new joint venture with CPChem reinforces a nearly two decade long association with the company capping many successes building and operating plants safely and efficiently. The minister felt that their large and diverse portfolio will not just help meet the world’s growing needs for advanced plastics and petrochemicals, but will also enable balanced growth and facilitate human development in a responsible and sustainable manner.

The project is expected to be operational by late 2026 after work on the site began in June last year. This is an ambitious timeline, but both QatarEnergy and CPChem are confident that the project will be successful. The joint venture demonstrates the importance of collaboration in the petrochemicals industry. By pooling resources and expertise, the two companies have been able to take on a major project that will benefit the entire region — a sentiment echoed by CPChem CEO Bruce Chinn.

“The building of the project would

be carried out using modern energysaving technology while using ethane as a raw material, which is expected, in addition to other measures, to lead to decreasing greenhouse gas emissions compared to similar global facilities,” Chinn pointed out.

In addition to helping drive economic growth in Qatar, the complex will also provide a boost to the global petrochemicals industry. By providing a reliable source of petrochemicals, the complex will help ensure the industry remains competitive in the years ahead. The joint venture between QatarEnergy and CPChem comes on the heels of their decision to implement the $8.5 billion Golden Triangle Polymers Plant on the US Gulf Coast in Texas. The two already collaborate on other ventures in Qatar.

Qatar which ranks as one of the most influential global players in the world’s LNG markets is expanding its North Field gas that will see its liquefaction capacity increase from 77 million tonnes per annum to 126 million tonnes by 2027. n

THE NEW YEAR OLD VIBE

BOOKWORM OR NOT, QH LISTS 5 TITLES TO WATCH OUT FOR

There’s more information out there than we handle, but the saving grace is these writers who take the trouble to go where few would venture to bring us insight, perspective and multi-layered view of the world we live in. We are past January, but it si strongly recommended that one of your New Year resolutions should always include reading more. So here’s a very brief list of our editor’s pick of five for the month – last two of which are due out in March.

BLOODBATH NATION

In this searing work, Auster traces centuries of America's use and abuse of guns, from the violent displacement of the native population to the forced enslavement of millions, to the bitter divide between embattled gun control and anti-gun control camps that has developed over the past 50 years and the mass shootings that dominate the news today.

THE GOOD LIFE: LESSONS FROM THE WORLD’S LONGEST SCIENTIFIC STUDY OF HAPPINESS

The invaluable insights in this book emerge from the revealing personal stories of hundreds of participants in the Harvard Study as they were followed year after year for their entire adult lives, and this wisdom is bolstered by research findings from this and many other studies.

SAVING TIME: DISCOVERING A LIFE BEYOND THE CLOCK

Saving Time tugs at the seams of reality as we know it—the way we experience time itself—and rearranges it, imagining a world not centred on work, the office clock, or the profit motive. Odell masterfully dissects the origins of our many destructive beliefs while also offering a way for us to be free of them.

In this record breaking 416-page memoir of 2023, Prince Harry tells his version of the story about the tragic death of his mother Princess Diana, life within the royal family and his marriage to Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, with remarkable candour and directness.

POVERTY, BY AMERICA

In this landmark book, acclaimed sociologist Matthew Desmond draws on history, research, and original reporting to show how affluent Americans knowingly and unknowingly keep poor people poor.

ESSENTIALS OF GOOD HEALTH: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

HEALTH
40 | QH | February 2023

It is important to remember that there is no one-size-fitsall solution to improving our health. What works for one person may not work for another, and the best way to find out is to try different things and see what works best for us.

Good health is essential to a happy life. No-one knows this better than the health professionals who work every day to keep people healthy. Let’s go over everything you need to know in order to maintain your good health.

What is health?

Health is not just the absence of disease or infirmity. It is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. It is not an abstract concept; it is something that can be measured and evaluated. Achieving and maintaining good health depends on a number of factors, including eating a balanced diet, getting enough exercise, managing stress, and getting enough sleep.

What are the essentials of good health?

There are a few things that are essential to good health and if you’re not familiar with them, you’re at risk for developing health conditions. Here are the essentials:

• Eat a balanced diet.

• Get enough exercise.

• Maintain a healthy weight.

• Get enough sleep.

• Avoid smoking.

• Avoid drinks.

• Avoid drugs.

• Avoid excessive stress.

• Avoid harmful toxins.

• Avoid unhealthy relationships.

• Avoid harmful environments.

• Avoid negative thoughts.

• Seek professional help when necessary.

• Live a healthy lifestyle.

• Take care of your health.

Eat, exercise and rest

As many of you know, there are three essential things that go into good health: eat, exercise and rest. However, many people don’t realise that sleep is also an essential part of good health. Sleep is extremely important for our bodies because it allows our bodies to heal, regenerate and rejuvenate. It also helps us to think more clearly and creatively. Not getting enough sleep can have serious consequences for our health, both physically and mentally. Here are a few examples:

Physical health consequences

• Increased risk of chronic diseases.

• Poor judgement.

• Poor physical performance.

• Increased stress levels.

• Poor mental health.

Mental health consequences

• Increased risk of depression.

• Decreased creativity.

• Decreased focus.

• Decreased ability to think strategically.

• Decreased motivation.

If you’re struggling to get a good night’s sleep, there are a few things you can do to help. First, make sure you’re going to bed and waking up at the same time every day. Secondly, make sure your bedroom is dark and quiet. And lastly, make sure you’re avoiding any screens in your bedroom at least half an hour before bed. n

THUMBS UP FOR RADISSON BLU

AZQA

If you want to take a break from months of hefty routine in the lead up to — and now after — the FIFA World Cup Qatar2022 for a quick weekend getaway, there’s a prime spot right here in the centre of Doha where you can get that much needed rest and holiday vibe.

Emerging proudly as an iconic Doha building, the Radisson Blu Doha is wellknown for its hospitality, great restaurants, deluxe rooms and vibrant nightlife. Don’t we all love traveling, visiting new places and meeting new people? But if your pockets do not allow after a busy football season to hop on to the plane, I would personally recommend a weekend stay in one of the most longstanding hotels in the capital.

Radisson Blu is a go-to option as the hotel is an amazing property with ultra-modern rooms and top-notch facilities, including an invigorating fitness club, swimming pool with a garden view, a lounge to party the night away and numerous international restaurants. A staycation can be very gratifying, so why not embark on a local holiday experience?

STAYCATION
HAROON CHECKS IN FOR THE WEEKEND TO GIVE YOU THE LOWDOWN ON THIS PERFECT METROPOLITAN GETAWAY

THE SUITE

Being a big fan of hotel’s restaurants and lounges I’m pumped to stay for the weekend. After checking into the hotel (which, by the way, is surprisingly fast and easy process), I’m excited to check out my suite. Upon entering the floor, where the suit is nestled, I can’t help but be impressed by the clean, scented corridors. I’m on the 10th floor and cupcakes, nuts, macrons, chocolates await to welcome me. After aweing the heartfelt goodies, I start checking out the space and getting settled. The modern wood-inspired décor is evident from the furniture to the TV and overall ambiance. The suit is tastefully decorated and generously sized. The bed is massive, making it irresistible for me to jump on, and the texture of the pillow and duvet is soft and comfy. There’s a TV set across the room and small wooden desk by the window in case you need to do some work. The spacious bathroom is ornate with a grey glass door, a tub, and a standalone shower. The overall space is well distributed, making it the perfect suite.

20 REASONS WHY

After unpacking, I went down to explore the area followed by dinner. I start my evening taking a tour of 20 F&B outlets at this property — yes, you heard it right 20 and they all have something unique to offer. Let’s share a quick roundup of these around the globe outlets:

Bombay Balti (Indian, Curry House) offers unique Indian style cuisine originating from Birmingham!

Chingari (Indian, Tandoori restaurant) brings genuine Tandoor cuisine to Doha. Dine here in the splendor of the Maharaja whilst musicians sing sweet ghazals.

The Italian Job (Italian restaurant) be entertained by their talented singing servers whilst indulging in traditional Italian cuisine.

Ruby Wu’s (Chinese restaurant) brings you the culinary delights of China.

Sakura Teppanyaki & Sushi Bar

(Japanese restaurant) Enjoy the theatre of their chefs as they put on a show, cooking unforgettable delights.

And the list goes on with Ingenuity, Pool Bar, Hyde Park Coffee Shop, Manhattan, Orion, Palm Garden and Shehrazad Lounge Bar & Terrace.

After the amazing tour I head to the Qube on the ground floor. The Qube has a very distinctive vibe and offers live bands, talented DJ’s. Around 8pm mixed crowd of young people warmingup for a Thursday night out takes over. After some appetisers and drinks at the Qube, it’s time for a romantic dinner at the Bentley’s Grill, the hotel’s classic steak house. I’ve been saving my appetite the entire day just for this dinner – so I have big expectations to match.

Bentley’s Grill is located on the east wing and has a formal setting, offering the finest Wagyu Beef and mouthwatering delights. The restaurant is thoughtfully decorated with brown

interiors and beautiful chandeliers. We tried their lobster cocktail and crab cakes as starters and believe me our taste buds were blown away with the enchanting taste. There’s no doubt their Wagyu Beef can be an instant hit among diners in Doha. After such a filling meal, I’m ready to call it a day and go back to my luxurious suite to properly enjoy it and flick through the many TV channels.

After a restful night’s sleep, breakfast was something I was looking forward to. On offer was in-room breakfast, and the server swayed in with a trolley offering a huge selection of breakfast dishes including different pastries, omelet of choice, fruits, waffles, and juices, among many other delicious treats. As expected, it didn’t disappoint at all!

After a great weekend getaway, I’m sure I will definitely keep coming back here for more. n

SOUQ WAQIF: An ode to history, culture

The name “Souq Waqif” originates from the fact that merchants used to stand at the entrances to display their wares. It is a renowned heritage market and tourist attraction in Qatar. With a history dating back over 250 years, it is one of the most well-known traditional markets in the region. In 2000, Qatar ordered the restoration of the market, which was done in a traditional architectural style to preserve its historical significance. The market features a variety of traditional goods such as spices, clothes and wood. Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities. In addition, Souq Waqif also boasts an array of restaurants and cafes that serve a variety of cuisines from around the world.

Here are some of the highlights of a day’s proposed tour:

Falcon Souq

Located within the confines of Souq Waqif, the Falcon Souq is one of the most exciting places to visit in Doha. Visitors can admire the majestic birds from up close, take photographs and, under the shopkeeper’s watchful eye, pose with a falcon perched on the arm. It has its own entrance with a gilded plaque identifying the location

Falcon Hospital

Souq Waqif Falcon Hospital is the largest hospital for falcons in the world, providing many distinct services and health care for falcons, in addition to its high expertise in surgical operations, treatment of various diseases of falcons, feather splinting and

offering seasonal vaccinations. Currently, the hospital provides clinical and laboratory services to a daily turnover of 130-150 falcons during the peak season and up to 50 falcons daily during the moulting season.

48 | QH | February 2023 DAY TOUR

Camel Area

You can head to the camel pen near the Falcon Souq to see these doeeyed creatures, or wander to the Amiri Stables where beautiful Arabian horses hold sway in between taking the

heritage police on their daily rounds of the souq.

Traditional Police Horse Parade

Watching the mounted police parade through the souq on their beautiful horses is always a sight for sore eyes. You feel transported to an old era.

Bismillah — the first hotel in Qatar

Bismillah hotel was built in the 1950s and is now managed by boutique company Tivoli Hotels. It was originally built in the early 1900s by a wealthy merchant named Abdullah Al Thani. The heritage building location has tiled balconies for people-watching in the souq, and just two large, opulent

private residences. Suitable for families, these apartments are decked out in contemporary Arabesque design, with kitchenettes and lounge areas.

Al Jomrok Boutique Hotel

Al Jomrok is a stylish sanctuary blending comfort, hospitality and casual dining facilities within an atmosphere of tranquil cosiness characterised by cultured style and modern flair. Al Jomrok’s wooden floorings and wall decorations are the hallmarks of the hotel’s sophisticated interior design details inspired by Qatari heritage.

Qatari Pearl Diver

Qatar was once at the heart of the pearl industry. At the pearl shop nestled amid the stores selling handicrafts, you can chat with the owner – a former pearl diver, learn about the lost art of pearling, and see the many varieties of white, pink and grey pearls.

Perfume Souq

The Qatari culture is marked by aromatic substances such as bukhoor for households and open spaces as well as strong fragrances for individuals. The Perfume Souq offers all of these riches in abundance. From oudh and musk to custom-made perfume, kohl, argan oil and henna design stencils, many of the region’s traditional fragrances and cosmetics find a home at the souq.

For the sheer pleasure of the spices spilling out of jute sacks, this is the place to be. From whole or ground spices, indulge exotic Arabic aromatics like saffron, zater, sumac, dried flowers, dried black lemons, and endless varieties of dates, honey, tea leaves and coffee beans.

Craft Centre

This place has been designated to be an integrated centre for handicrafts that aims to preserve, protect, develop and disseminate and present live nontypical shows of the various methods of manufacturing traditional handicrafts. You may find the shop that created the bisht for football legend Lionel Messi that he was presented with after his team was crowned the World Champions in December.

Al Koot Fort

Its name is derived from the house built in the form of a fort by the water, and it was built in 1927 during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani, the ruler of Qatar at the time.

Souq Waqif Art Center

Since Souq Waqif reflects the spirit of Qatari culture with its arts and aesthetics, this centre is considered one of the most aesthetic and popular art centres in the country. It includes many different art galleries to provide the opportunity for artists to perform shows and share their creativity.

The Golden Thumb Statue

It was sculptured to mark the greatest sporting success in the country’s history, which hosted the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

Majlis al Dama

Majlis al Dama, an unassuming coffee shop, is popular among locals for its qahwa helwa, loosely translated as sweet coffee, a mixture of coffee, orange zest, cardamom, cinnamon and saffron; the karak-strong tea with spices and full-cream milk and for its dama (checkers) tournaments.

Souq Waqif Antique Auction

The auction at Souq Waqif Doha every Friday afternoon for antique and heritage items sees big turnout. Time for you to turn out for it as well! n

The day long tour rounds up with a Romantic Dinner at Al Shurfa – QR 300 inclusive of special sharing menu for two.

Be My Valentine!

QH GIVES YOU THE LOWDOWN ON THE SPA AT SOUQ WAQIF HOTEL

The Spa at Souq Waqif boutique hotels by Tivoli is tucked in the welcoming venue Al Jasra Hotel. The facility is popular for its hammam treatments and a relaxing hide out to unwind your worries, disconnect and rejuvenate. The spa is equipped with cutting-edge technology, but with an Arabian twist to its magical décor.

The treatment

Romantic Treat for two. What better gift to offer to your partner than a relaxing afternoon as a Valentine’s treat. Being the spa lovers that we are at QH, we experienced one of the most delightful couple spa treatments Doha could offer to celebrate the day of love.

The wellness treatment consists of 30 minutes jacuzzi, 45 minutes of hammam and a 45 minutes of the massage of your choice. So we are here to give you the nitty gritty of it all, our experience kicked off with a 30 minute Jacuzzi to unwind, relax and help our pores breathe a little.

Subsequently, we were taken to the special hammam room –a steamy Moroccon hammam. The moment you step into it you feel no less than a Turkish sultan, ready to get pampered and taken care of. We began our hammam treatment, with the trained therapists scrubbing the entire body and then removing the exfoliation with buckets of warm water. The experience is unique and the Spa’s best-seller, it’s like having someone showering you for about three quarters of an hour.

Next, we were escorted to the waiting room while our therapists prepared themselves for our next journey. We were now ready to succumb to a body massage. After what seemed to be forever, we oozed relaxation and stress-free. Up next was a hot cup of green tea and apricots to wrap up our romantically relaxing journey.

The verdict

Our treatment was like a fantasy in which the professionals at the spa took care of us for an unforgettable journey. Centrally located within the Souq Waqif it is begging to be explored. And what better than to make it a day to remember for your Valentine. n

THE SINGAPORE SONG

MAHDIYA FAROOK PICKS UP EIGHT SPOTS TO MAKE YOUR VISIT COUNT, INCLUDING THE COMPULSIVE SHOPPING CENTRES

Singapore is an oasis of Asian culture and hospitality with modern aesthetics. The cosmopolitan city hosts a multitude of activities perfect for a family holiday. Singapore is also considered one of the world’s safest cities. People are friendly and can converse in English. Taxis, MRT (Metro), and public buses are available at all locations. Immediately upon arriving at the award-winning Changi Airport, you will be transported into the urbanised jungle. Here are our top 8 picks that you should take advantage of while in Singapore.

1. Garden by the Bay

Start your trip at ‘Gardens by the Bay,’ a botanical haven for nature and plant lovers. There are several attractions, including a beautiful Rainforest and Waterfall in the Cloud dome, our favourite. Then, take the skywalk to indulge in an overview of the beautiful Flower dome, where flowers never stop blooming. The Garden Pod, the newest addition, offers sustainable accommodation for nature lovers. Do not miss the music and light show outdoors in the evening — ideal for nature and photography lovers. The visit takes around 4-5 hours, and there are many eateries around the area, too.

2. The Singapore Flyer

Fifteen minutes from ‘Garden by the Bay’, you will find the Giant Ferris Wheel ‘Singapore Flyer.’ The massive 165-metre wheel offers the most amazing views of Lion city. The 30-minute ride claims to give you a sneak peek into Malaysia and Indonesia. We recommend taking the flyer at night to witness the breathtaking lights of the city.

3. Clarks Quay

During the evening, head to Clarke Quay. Previously a wharf for loading and unloading goods, it is now an integrated entertainment area during nighttime. Many colourful bars, eateries, and restaurants become a bubbly socialising and gastronomic zone for night owls. We recommend the Jumbo Seafood restaurant for delicious authentic Chinese dishes. After dinner, take a stroll to Waterfront Promenade and Merlion Park.

TRAVEL

and 4D Adventureland. In addition, adventure Cove and the beautiful S.E.A aquarium are home to amazing amphibian species and fish.

Adrenaline junkies can do Mega Jump Bungee jump or Mega Zip, or take a walk at Siloso Beach or Palawan beach. Many options for food and beverages are available and transport to and from different islands in the resort is also free.

7. Universal Studios

Six themes across Universal Studios mean fun for everyone regardless of age. You can spend the whole day at the park. Get ready for high fives with the Minions and a galactic ride with the Transformers. The most recommended rides are the Jurassic slides, and the Mummy Returns 4D roller coaster. Don’t forget to take the fast pass to skip the long queue.

4. Little India

Be mystified by Singapore’s most colourful historical sites when you visit Little India. You are transported to Indian heritage when you walk through the blends of new and old in the streets. With mouthwatering Asian eateries alongside the road, the smell of spices and jasmine flowers that adorn the roadside is genuinely a captivating experience. Don’t forget to visit the Veeramakaliamman Temple, Mustafa Center and Tekka Centre, which offer cheap shopping and thrifts. Our favourite restaurant is Muthus Curry, located in Racecourse; they serve the award-winning fish head curry with steamed rice. In addition, their Singaporean crab is divine and not to be missed.

5. Geylang

In the evening, take a stroll through Geylang and enjoy the most delicious Durians, Rambutan, and lychees. Geylang is named the late-night district but is very safe to go with kids. The durian stalls are open till midnight. Durian 36 is our recommendation.

6. Sentosa Island

Can’t stop talking about the bundle of activities available at Sentosa Island. The best way to enjoy the island is to stay at one of the resorts located inside the island. The most recommended resort is Sofitel Resorts. This haven is adorned with live peacocks that stroll the terrace while you enjoy breakfast.

Transportation inside the island is free, with buses running every 10-15 minutes. In addition, the iconic cable car gives a 360 view of the beautiful island.

My favourite picks are thrilling lude rides and skyline trip back

8. Shopping

Singapore is a shopaholic paradise. You can find the highestend brands to the lowest steals within one hour’s distance. Orchard Road offers a variety of shopping with international department stores and boutiques, offering budget apparel, electronics and high-end fashion labels.

China Town and Haji Lane offer heritage and local trinkets, silks, and brocades. If you love bargaining, hop into the Bugis Street flea market. Alternatively, Lucky Plaza, Far East Plaza, and Mustafa Centre all have pocket-friendly shopping too.

NEW CHINESE OUTLET AT THE MALL OF QATAR

HAN SHI FU IS A DELECTABLE TRIBUTE TO THE FLAVOURS OF CHINA. QH VISITS THE NOVEL EATERY TO SAVOUR AUTHENTIC, REGIONAL CHINESE CUISINE AT ITS BEST

Located at the popular Oasis spot at the centre of the Mall of Qatar, the place is packed, and the air is buzzing with the sound of the cutlery clinking on plates and fragrant with the scent of hot food. The décor is vibrant with wood paneled walls and Asian-inspired artworks.

As we are seated, the waiter arrives and helpfully explains the menu, his advice is most welcome because we are absolutely starving and just want to get on with the eating.

We begin with the shrimp corn soup with caviar, duck salad with Chinese 5 spiced and golden kimchi – all of which are generously portioned and yummy. The duck salad is by far our favourite though; it has a certain taste to it, probably the liberal splashing of Chinese spices which gives the salad a refreshing edge.

Next to arrive, are the pan-fried rib eye beef dumplings and Szechuan spicy prawn wonton, which are out of this world. The dish lasts all of ten seconds as we scoff up the delicate and delicious chows. Next, we try the crispy Sichuan spicy chicken wowwow which are just perfect, not too overcooked, and not overly battered; the marination is richer than standard versions and left a unique spice aftertaste over the buds.

For the mains, we order three items. The prawns from the ocean are first to greet our gurning mouths. Perhaps, the most delicious of the mains, the portion was good enough for two. After we polish off the last of the prawns we turn our attentions to the braised beef short ribs from the farm and short rib-eye noodle soup. Both of these are simply delicious; the meat in both dishes is ridiculously tender, I have no idea how they made it that soft but I’m not complaining. Good work Han Shi Fu.

All that remains now is the dessert, a sense of relief washes over us as we dig into the rustic bamboo steamer. We unveil the lid and a sweet surprise of monster chocolate bao awaits.

The Verdict

From the appetisers to the main course and even the beverages – all are excellent. The food was perfectly prepared and wellpresented. They have a unique taste to their food, which we are confident every Asian food lover will appreciate. n
