I've always been a big believer that your surroundings play a huge part in both your mental and physical states. Your surroundings can impact your attitude, effectiveness, creativity, stress and energy; even things like your Vitamin D levels. For example, a beautiful bright space can be a great place to start your day or get a workout in, while a dark, quiet space with a comfortable couch can only add to the experience of listening to a quiet record or sipping on a good bourbon. I've always prioritized design in both my home and work spaces and feel the right decor choices and ambiance for your personal style can make all the difference. However, pinpointing your personal style and finding purveyors, builders, and designers who can really bring that style to life is hard to do. So, every year, in our annual Home Issue, we try to help you out by showcasing some of our favorite spaces by Charlotte's top talent. In this issue, we spotlight some of the very best spaces from the areas finest designers and builders. We also showcase Charlotte's best home decor shops where you can find all the best design products. On top of that you can check out the most historic homes in the Carolinas. A conversation with the Charlotte artist Patti Moore.

Patti Moore, a Charlotte-based painter who was born in California, is most often influenced by floral beauty, flowing landscapes, and natural figures. Over the past few years, her work has made a notable splash into the Charlotte art scene. Our conversation with her below was an incredible insight into her artistic mind.

Do you remember when you first felt compelled to start painting and create art?

Several years back, I thought to myself, “what do you see yourself doing in life once the kids have grown and started their lives?” I had this image in my mind of living in a white house, tending to my garden, and painting all day. At that time, I had never even picked up a paint brush. I must have shared

this thought with my husband, Battle, because for Christmas that year he signed me up for art classes at Braitman Studio.

What kind of background or training do you have?

I have always been creative, but never thought I would pursue art as a career. My background is in marketing. I’m from California and spent years in wine marketing and sales. After receiving my MBA from UNC, my husband and I moved to New York where I worked in brand management. In my spare time, I've jumped around in all sorts of fun hobbies and educational endeavors. I'm a WSET-certified wine specialist, I have my pastry chef certificate, and I love to play tennis. People always assume that I am a left brained, creative type and have been an artist all my life. I'm actually a pretty type A person, very organized and deliberate.

I feel like I have a pretty good creative balance, as artists go.

What has been most impactful on your creativity and process of creation?

The people around me have really impacted my creative process. In class, I was always encouraged to try new things, and not sweat "painting ugly" to get to a new creative place. At home, my family has been so supportive since the very beginning. No matter how bad my initial work was, my family always told me it was amazing and to keep at it. This has given me the confidence to try new things and not worry too much about what other people will say. We can be our own worst critic. Keep painting and keep moving forward.

Where do you find inspiration?

I find inspiration everywhere. On vacation, places I've lived, my front yard, local designers, and even from other artists. I love photography and follow tons of talented and creative people, which helps to keep my mind open.

Where can people view or purchase your art?

My art is currently available on my website and through my social media. I also sell work through Art House Charlotte and a few local Charlotte boutiques.

LA ISLA DE TIGRE

A must-see exhibit starts at SOCO Gallery.

This March, SOCO Gallery will open a solo exhibition of new paintings by artist Jackie Milad entitled La Isla de Tigre. This exciting exhibition will run through April 26, 2023.

La Isla Del Tigre comprises twelve new multimedia works exploring the layering of transcultural history in Central American and Middle Eastern architecture and iconography. Milad links a universal topic of cultural layering and documentation with her own multicultural identity by blending what appears to be disparate imagery, icons, and language (graffiti, rap lyrics, popular slang, etc). These layered compositions mimic not only her own mixed Honduran-Egyptian-American upbringing, but also symbolize the way cultures are recorded and monumentalized in remaining fragments over time.

Milad received her BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University, MA, and her MFA from Towson University, MD. She was an artist-in-residence at the McColl Center in Charlotte, NC in 2021.

TThe passion project of Judith Weston Zehmke, Art House Charlotte is a home-operated art gallery centered around local contemporary painting. Alongside her marketing director Jennifer Branham, Judith sells art to fellow enthusiasts, and she lives by the notion that everyone should experience art “in their space.” With a growing list of artists from a variety of styles, Judith makes modern Charlotte art accessible to the casual enjoyer.

Judith works closely with Jennifer Branham who manages all of the social media, website and open art houses. Prior to working together at Art House, Judith sold artwork through many creative means, one of which was her former shop The Boulevard at South End.

“Jen’s creativity and expertise in all things marketing are what get people interested in our offerings,” Judith explains.

Here, Judith shares with us her business history, her beliefs about shopping for art, and what it’s like to run a gallery out of her own house.

When was Art House formed, and what was the impetus?

Art House was formed in 2009 a few years after I moved to Charlotte. I worked for an art collector, Thurston Twigg-Smith, when I lived in Honolulu, Hawaii. When I moved back to the mainland, I was frustrated that I had hundreds of dollars to spend on art and nowhere to spend it. You could either shop in an antique store (don’t get my wrong, I love vintage art), or you could spend thousands. I only had hundreds and wanted to invest in original artwork. I decided I would create a space for people like me to purchase original artwork for hundreds of dollars. I started with one artist and soon realized there was a good-sized market for original, affordable art.

You have found a niche in offering art that’s not wildly expensive, but is still ‘fine art.” Why do you think this is an important hole to fill?

I think everyone deserves to be able to experience original art in their space, whatever space that may be. That’s why our prices

start at $50 and stop at $3000. I did not enjoy or appreciate the financial barrier that existed between me and the artwork I admired. When I moved to Charlotte, I noticed there was a huge hole in this market for people like me. And I learned that there are a lot of people like me. I also learned that there are a great number of talented artists in Charlotte. They just need a place to sell their work; I try to be that place.

What type of art will we find at Art House? Folks will find mostly local, contemporary art both on canvas, wood panel and paper. Think landscapes, figures, abstracts, still lifes. I also offer vintage art that I curate from all over the U.S. I have a personal obsession with vintage art, and I think that it can function as a way to mix mediums in a space. It’s a constant treasure hunt.

What would you tell someone who's never purchased ‘real’ original art, but wants to? I would tell them not to be intimidated or afraid. I would tell them to trust themselves and follow their eye and buy what they like and want to look at in their space. I would tell them there is no right or wrong when it comes to art and bringing an original piece of art into their home / office is life-changing. Sounds dramatic, but it’s true. It changes the energy in a space and creates a mood.

It’s a cycle that Eloise Hamilton Reeves, founder and operator of Thirty-One Jane, understands well. She had the opportunity to explore the West Village neighborhood in New York for years, learning the nuances and influences of the area’s chic fashion scene.

Then, when she was ready to leave, she let her mother Susan take over her apartment’s lease. Susan, who also had a love of fashion, got to experience the changing neighborhood just as her daughter did.

In honor of their time in West Village, Eloise and Susan decided to open up Thirty-One Jane—a direct homage to their old apartment on Jane Street. Together, they bring out the best in each other as they carefully curate clothes for the Charlotte area.

While they might split responsibilities for day-to-day operations, they always make sure to align themselves with what they want to carry in store.

“We want women to feel confident, cool and sexy,” says Susan. “That’s why we offer a variety of style options to meet the modern woman’s everyday needs—from elevated basics to occasion wear.”

After living in the West Village, Eloise and Susan quickly realized that the chic confidence displayed by the women around them also translated to their homes. By expanding their offerings to home goods and even gifts, Eloise and Susan made

MENSWEAR MAKEOVER

Glen Taylor, Richard Pattison and Lyn Conger opened the specialty menswear boutique TRC, also known as Taylor Richards & Conger, in the era of short shorts, tight polos, and loafers. They established themselves as the premier destination for men’s fashion when they started welcoming customers to their SouthPark location in 1986 and have outfitted Charlotteans in the best of the best in style and fit since then.

“We select every item that comes into our shop from vendors all over the world, and each piece meets our high standards of visual appeal, fit, and touch,” says part-owner Richard Pattison. TRC also offers made-to-measure clothing, which has made it a favorite among Charlotte’s most selective and discerning dressers.

In 2005, TRC relocated its

menswear shop to Phillips Place and expanded its offerings by including women’s clothing in its adjoining TRC W boutique. However, the explosive growth of its menswear business since COVID caused TRC to redirect its efforts. IIt’s always a blow to see a restaurant venture spearheaded by a James Beard-nominated chef turn in the towel, and watching Paul Verica’s Orto do so was no different. However, it softens the blow when the space is then filled with the fresh vibrancy born from brand new restaurants. And Figo36, the Italian restaurant occupying Orto’s old space on 36th Street, is nothing if not vibrant.

Figo36 is being introduced to the NoDa neighborhood by Menagerie Hospitality Group, which is headed by Daniel Weiss and local to Charlotte. Menagerie is responsible for The Wine Loft in South End, an intimate venue with a robust wine collection, small plates, and live music, and The Vintage Whiskey and Cigar Bar, also in South End. Each enterprise by Menagerie is driven by guest experience and Figo36, although the group’s first dip into a full food menu, is no different.

A Nod to the Neighborhood

When deciding on the name for their new restaurant, the Menagerie team kicked around ideas that evoked “cool,” ultimately landing on the word “figo” which translates to “cool” in Italian. And it seems fitting for Figo36, which calls itself contemporary casual; it’s a place that feels festive but not fussy, a step down from fine dining but a step up from casual dining.

“We went to work building a restaurant that would reflect the neighborhood in its design,” says Darci Frank. To that end, diners will discover lively colors and draping plants that conjure NoDa’s vibrant youthfulness, as well as swaths of graffiti along the bar area that nod toward the grassroots arts scene for which NoDa has been a longtime incubator. All in all, Figo36 exudes the vibe that, if it were a person, it would be fashionably late to every party.

Pasta, Pizza, Pizzazz —

The anchors of Figo36’s menu are the house-made pasta and Neapolitan handtossed pizza. The restaurant’s novelty resides in its decor, preferring to lean on the traditional, with a few Southern twists, when crafting its food menu. Classics like pasta alla vodka, shrimp scampi, and linguini alfredo dominate the pasta offerings. Most of Figo’s pizzas are built on a base of housemade dough that uses super-fine tipo 00 flour, although gluten-free variations are available, as are vegan toppings. We recommend pairing your pasta or pizza with a glass of wine from Figo36’s curated list.

The menu also features a sizable antipasti section with options like whipped ricotta, calamari fritti, classic bruschetta, and fried ravioli. In true Italian style, Figo36 is open until midnight on the weekends, with the kitchen offering up antipasti dishes late into the night, providing a more elevated late snack for the NoDa bar hoppers and live music seekers. So, stop by late in the evening for an antipasti and nightcap created by Beverage Director Rob Florio, like the bell pepper Aperol spritz.

As standard as the menu may be, the creators of Figo36 (with the help of Designbar, a Charlotte-based commercial interior designer) have built an atmosphere of youthfulness and modernity.

“Unlike other Italian restaurants, we wanted Figo36 to reflect the artistic eclecticism of the beautiful NoDa neighborhood while also being a 'cool' place to hang with friends, family, or that special someone,” says Frank.

Jacy Painter Kelly is a Charlotte-based interior designer whose looks fuse together casual living and edgy coolness. Before launching her own business, Jacy worked in retail and preconstruction design for both new-builds and renovations. Below, she tells us about where she finds inspiration, how she designs a room, and more.

What is your process for coming up with a design plan for clients?

I like to start with a meeting in person where I can ask the client questions to better understand their needs. From there, we dig into the design. Every client and project is different, so this process is never really the same. Some clients have a simple space, while others are completely custom builds done over the course of years. Once design plans are finalized, it’s estimated out, and once approved, we get everything ordered, and then we wait!

What inspires your designs and the unique touches you put into specific rooms?

My clients for the most part! I try to get to know them as well as

I can, and pull from them what would make them the happiest in their spaces. I also like to pull inspiration from other spaces: hotels, restaurants, bars... I draw inspiration from places that people enjoy visiting.

What stage of the design process do you enjoy the most and why?

I really love install day. It’s exhilarating to finally see my plans come to life and to hand it over to the clients. It’s usually filled with some problem solving, and these days it’s rare for anything to be installed complete, but the exhaustion at the end makes me feel young again [laughs].

How do you find the right balance between visually pleasing and practical?

A space really won’t last if it doesn’t function well. Yes, I want it to look amazing, but there is almost always a compromise to be found that serves both form and function. Sometimes the simple answer is to distract from the practical necessity with something else in the space, so no one pays it as much attention.

“I draw inspiration from places that people enjoy visiting.”

What room type do you like to design most? Cocktail rooms! I just really love the opportunity to take the traditional sitting room and make it the opposite of your Mom’s sitting room. What once was the space to “look at, but not touch,” is becoming the hip hideaway that people can truly enjoy again. Changing the name and the vibe of a room can add a lot to a home.

What colors or patterns are you personally loving right now that you would suggest we try for our own homes?

Anyone who knows me knows what’s coming… black! I think it’s the best neutral right now because it stands out and blends in at the same time. It’s a rockstar as a solid, and it layers well with all kinds of shades and tones. I enjoy mixing texture: wood tones, leathers, hair-on-hide, and mixed metals. I’m not experimenting with tons of color right now, because it can read “super trendy” pretty quickly, and the neutral game is so strong and long lasting.

THE HOST WITH THE MOST

Traci Zeller lets us inside her own home with this classically chic, beautifully layered dining room. The room changes frequently, Traci says, and here, her home is styled for an event. It’s the perfect reminder that interior design isn’t only about complete overhauls or throwing everything out to start anew. Rather, as this interior designer does in her home, artful touches can be added and removed, over and over, to keep a room fresh and timely… and to fulfill your itch for change.

“Most of the room was done years ago, including the window treatments and dining room table and chairs — which proves that investing in classic, quality pieces always provides the best long-term return in decorating,” Traci shares. “The bluepainted chest is the most recent addition to the room, at least in terms of furniture. I purchased it at an antiques fair outside of Paris, during one of my regular trips prior to the pandemic. The paint is original, and the color is exquisite.”

Ashley Smith of Pagoda Event Design is responsible for the gorgeous florals and event decorating, which were added at the time for the holidays.

“To see what she’s able to put together, and how her florals can bring a space to next level decorating for an event, always makes my jaw drop,” Traci says.

“When I’m the client, I get to do exactly what makes my heart sing! This space is a perfect example of that. If I were to redesign the room with what’s on the market today, and as my family’s needs have evolved, I may choose different finishes or pieces, but the feel of the room would be the same. I still love this space, and that’s what I want for my clients — to love a space just as much years after it’s completed (and perhaps after we’ve added more layers with new art or table settings) as they do the day it is installed.”

Design firm owner and principal interior designer Alexis Pawling had ten years to dream up exactly what she wanted her own home to look like and just how she would like it to function for her family of four.

“My goal was to create an airy, bright, happy home that had enough living space for the four of us. [Today the house is] transitional/modern dappled with antiques, vintage and a dash of color and whimsy.”

Slate Interiors

This furniture and art collective collaborates with over 60 merchants and artists to provide a wide array of home furnishings, accessories, lighting, and original art. Cosmic Creativ

Kelly Daniels is the owner and artist behind Cosmic Creativ, a handcrafted business of home goods made with resin art. Rumor Mill Market

In 2013, Rumor Mill Market moved into a former cotton mill located in Davidson, a small college town just north of Charlotte. It has since been featured in numerous local and national publications, as well as featured on HGTV, after more than doubling in size and making a name for itself as one of Lake Norman’s top destinations for furniture and home decor. CAMDEN CHARM

Where historical interest meets southern hospitality.

TThe oldest inland city in South Carolina, Camden is host to a variety of historical places and attractions that an enjoyer of Carolinian culture should not miss. From horse racing to Revolutionary War battlefields, this quaint Southern city is a prime spot for a historically-inspired experience.

Every spring, Camden houses the Carolina Cup, one of the largest steeplechase events in America. The event attracts horse racing fans from all over the world; many consider it to be South Carolina’s rendition of the Kentucky Derby. Spectators often show up in colorful outfits for the occasion. No matter the weather, the spectacle of the historic steeplechase is alive and well in Camden. In

addition to the race, the Carolina Cup also hosts food and clothing vendors, and a contest for those with the most elaborate hats.

For the historically inclined, Camden is home to notable battlefields of the American Revolution and the Civil War. Nearby Boykin’s Mill saw the last Civil War battle fought in South Carolina, and the site is open to the public at all hours of the day. Visitors can pay their respects at the humble obelisk on the site.

history. Visitors from out of town can spend the night at one of the town’s elegant and historically-inspired inns. Old McCaskill’s Farm is a farmhouse with bed and breakfaststyle accommodations. Guests are also welcome to tour the working farm and see how the McCaskill family tends to their animals. The guest rooms are like something out of your favorite period drama, complete with wood-frame beds and an antique sitting area. Naturally, the sitting area boasts a game table and a spinning wheel for good measure. Those with more modern interests should stay at the nearby Colony Inn. Despite the name, Colony Inn features all the modern hotel amenities ranging from a swimming pool to boat and RV plugins to ensure those from far and wide are taken care of.

It would not be the South without antique stores, and Camden is home to plenty. While spending the day in town, be sure to browse any number of local antique shops for that quaint and unique item you didn’t know your home needed. Taste the local flavors at the farmers market, and be sure to come home with at least one local barbecue sauce or produce item.

Enthusiasts of the South will find themselves right at home in Camden, and those who aren’t will no doubt be won over by the classic charm of this little town. HISTORIC HOMES OF CAROLINA

North Carolina has a rich history that precedes its modern reputation as a rapidly growing state. The Tar Heel state is believed to have been inhabited since around 700 A.D. by Native American tribes like those around Cape Fear. In 1729, North Carolina was established as one of 13 royal colonies, and went on to be the setting of five Revolutionary War battles. As a key participant in the Civil War, the state has played an indelible role in the evolution of the United States.

Here, we’ve rounded up a list of historic homes of NC that bore witness to beautiful eras and people of North Carolina’s history. Wander the grounds or walk into the heart of these homes and step back in time, appreciating a different architectural era, a different way of life, or a moment frozen in time.

Duke Mansion / Charlotte

Located in Charlotte’s own Myers Park neighborhood (which is itself on the National Register of Historic Places), the Duke Mansion is a colonial revival structure that was originally constructed for Zebulon Vance Taylor in 1915. In 1919, James B. Duke, who had purchased the house from Taylor, transformed the house into a mansion. In 1977, the building and its 4.5 acres of landscaped grounds were acquired by the Duke Endowment. Now, the mansion functions as an inn, offering guests modern amenities in a historic setting.

without including the Biltmore. Before it became the popular tourist destination it is today, the Biltmore was the country home of George Washington Vanderbilt and his family. After becoming captivated by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains, he set to work purchasing land in the area so that he might enjoy that view for the rest of his life. Officially completed in 1895, the mansion houses 250 rooms, including 35 bedrooms and 43 bathrooms. It also boasts thousands of acres of perfectly landscaped scenery. Architectural enthusiasts will love seeing the French Renaissance influences throughout the home, while history buffs will enjoy experiencing a bygone era of opulence.

The Palmer-Marsh House / Bath Captain Michael Coutanche built the Palmer-Marsh House in 1751 before selling it to 28-year-old Robert Palmer, a lieutenant colonel in the British army, in 1753. The house passed through the

hands of the next two generations of Palmer’s family, before it was sold to brothers and merchants Jonathan and Daniel Marsh. The Marsh family descendants would occupy the house for the next 120 years.

Bennett Place / Durham

By the time Confederate General Joseph Johnston agreed to a truce with Union General William T. Sherman, the Civil War had been raging on for years already. With Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s surrender already complete and General Sherman’s destructive march still ongoing, the Confederate Army was on a clear path to defeat. To discuss the terms of Johnston’s surrender, the two generals met at a midway point between the two fronts—a house now known as Bennett Place. Home to farmer James Bennett and his family, this simple house would serve as the site of the largest troop surrender of the Civil War. Although a fire destroyed

Duke Mansion

The Allison-Deaver House / Brevard

As the oldest standing frame house in western North Carolina, the Allison-Deaver House represents the architectural shift that was slowly making its way throughout the mountainside. Instead of building a log cabin like most of his neighbors, property owner Benjamin Allison decided to build his house out of a two-story timber frame. In 1830, Allison sold the property to William Deaver, who added more rooms and Charlestoninspired double porches. When the Civil War began and North Carolina seceded, the residents of the town were quite divided over the choice, and the Deaver family was no exception. Visitors who come to the Allison-Deaver House can not only admire the early frame home architecture, but also learn about the Civil War and how such a monumental event impacted families of all sizes.

Tryon Palace / New Bern

Built between 1767 and 1770, Tryon Palace was the first permanent capitol building for the colony of North Carolina. British governors occupied the palace until 1775, and then the building hosted the first sessions of the General Assembly. In the twentieth century, an extensive reconstruction of the palace was completed. Visitors can now tour the palace alongside guides in

period clothing, visit the on-site North Carolina History Center, peruse Tryon Palace museum galleries, and stroll the palace gardens and grounds.

Reynolda House Museum of American Art / Winston-Salem

Katharine Smith and husband RJ Reynolds settled into the 34,000 square foot, 64-room home now known as Reynolda House in 1917. With 1,076 acres at their disposal, the Reynolds family built a post office, greenhouse, smokehouse, power plant, and churches, plus they installed four themed, formal gardens. Now, the grounds are open to the public, and the house displays pieces by artists like Georgia O’Keefe and Stuart Davis.

Blandwood Mansion / Greensboro

This historic home was originally constructed by Charles Bland before being purchased and expanded by Governor John Motley Morehead. By the time Morehead’s renovations were complete, the structure featured a central three-story tower and gorgeous gardens. The new and improved Blandwood mansion was considered a very modern home when it was first built, mainly due to its special architectural style. In fact, it’s now considered the oldest home in the United States to exemplify the Italianate architectural style of the nineteenth century.

The Design: Timeless, elegant with hints of glam.

Primary Goals: To create an open, balanced kitchen that incorporates several appliances that aren’t visually apparent at first glance. The hidden scullery door keeps the cabinetry flowing without interrupting the layout with a cased door opening and conceals a second refrigerator and coffee bar. Incorporating the black/white inset doors into the cabinetry, black “X” ceiling detail and Arabescato marble brought in the wow factor we were trying to achieve.
