spring color trends
in your step Put a with the season’s hottest
2020 was, of necessity, all about low maintenance colors, but now it’s time to start having fun with your hair color once more. 2021’s hottest spring trends are all about leveling up your lockdown look, according to Rodney Gentry of Scottsdale’s Saachi Studios. “Spring’s hair colors are showing that it’s time to come out of hiding and start enjoying the world once more,” he says. “From rich, all-over color to fabulous tones for highlights and lowlights, it’s time for your color to be bright, bold and beautiful.” For all-over color, expect plenty of red tones this spring, as well as lighter browns that leave the darkness of winter behind and carry hints of the summer sunshine that’s yet to come. Social media has been awash with influencers framing their faces with bold streaks of color, also known as e-girl streaks. Reds, along with a whole spectrum of other colors, are expected to make an appearance in e-girl streaks this spring. This season, this trend will be taken further, with two-tone streaks and some dazzlingly bright colors. “While e-girl streaks look fabulous set against dark hair, they can also look stunning with blonde locks, making this a versatile and accessible style for everyone to experiment with this spring,” Gentry says. In terms of techniques, balayage will continue growing in popularity over the course of the spring. The hand-painted style produces beautiful, natural-looking color in all tones, while it’s also ideal for pastel colors, for a truly fresh spring look. More traditional coloring techniques also remain popular. “Both highlights and lowlights will continue to remain popular, even as a growing number of clients try out balayage,” Saachi Studio’s Gentry says. “What’s different this spring is that clients are going for brighter highlights and richer, deeper lowlights. 2021 really is the time to celebrate color in a wide range of ways.”
Full-service designer and hair color specialist Rodney Gentry can be reached at Sachi Studios in Scottsdale, AZ. Call 480.639.2000 to make an appointment or visit www.rodneygentry.com for more information.

Contents This issue – our annual “man issue” – was extra fun to plan as we skipped it last year due to COVID-19. While our 11 other issues each year tend to skew on the feminine side, with women’s fashion, makeup and more often highlighted, we dedicate the month of June to the guys. As such, we tried to think a little outside of the box and showcase things we may not normally pick, such as a roundup on local cigar lounges (page 78) and a page all about men’s hair products (page 86). You’ll find the best Valleywide spots for barbecue (page 114), and some winning whiskies to wash the delicious meats down (page 110). Prefer to take the grilling into your own hands? Check out all the necessities needed for a summer barbecue (page 88). In the way of fashion, start things off by flipping to our Men of Style feature, where you’ll find five prominent men you likely recognize from TV, sports and more sharing their style secrets (page 44). And for those in need of a present for upcoming Father’s Day, take a look at wallets (page 92), a luxe waterproof timepiece (page 85), and gifts for all guys (page 90). For the dude who puts the pedal to the metal, we’re also featuring a pretty unique car by Bugatti (page 101) and giving the lowdown on the new 2021 Audi R8 (page 102). And speaking of going full throttle, we are highlighting Mark Grossman, who is a Valley native and a rising star on The Young and the Restless (page 40). We caught up with the actor about his road to stardom and what lies ahead. To all the dads, grandfathers and father figures out there, happy Father’s Day! May not just June 20 but the entire month of June be a celebration just for you.

THE ACCELERATOR
Ray Damm navigates local nonprofit at warp speed while expanding services to the Middle East Though just 35 and colorblind, Ray Damm has certainly led a colorful life. His story starts in 1986 at a Navy base in Pensacola, Florida. The second oldest of four children, Damm grew up in a military family, notably with a fighter pilot father and Marine Corps grandfather.
“We moved about every 18 months with the Navy, so I had already lived in more than a dozen cities across Florida, Arizona, California, Texas, Virginia and South Carolina before I could even drive,” says Damm, who spent his early childhood dreaming of following in his father’s footsteps.
So Scottsdale! June ‘21
29
Pulse UP CLOSE Although a good student, there was only one subject in school that gave him trouble. “In third grade, I was mastering multiplication tables and memorizing state capitals with ease, but when the teacher took out a color wheel, I was at a loss,” Damm says. Among his struggles were discerning pastels, bold colors, greens, and browns from black and white. In short order, Damm was diagnosed with color vision deficiency, a subset of colorblindness where an individual is unable to distinguish certain shades of color. “I was a pretty upbeat kid but learning it would preclude me from becoming a fighter pilot like my father was a bit of a blow,” Damm says. Instead, he shifted his interests to sports, becoming an adept football punter and kicker while maintaining a high GPA. His talent earned him a full athletic and academic scholarship at The University of Virginia’s College at Wise in 2004, where he studied business and graduated in three years. Just prior to earning his degree in 2007, Damm spent his spring break interviewing for jobs, ultimately earning a position at a company in Miami that turned out to be more door-to-door sales than a first step in a career. “Through it, however, I ended up knocking on the door of a printing company, which led me to meet the owners of a magazine who offered me an opportunity to go into publishing. I took it, and it ultimately led me to New York in 2008,” Damm says.
A Philanthropic Path Admittedly being somewhat sheltered from growing up on tightknit military bases and in sports teams, experiences in both Miami and New York opened Damm’s eyes to a world well outside his comfort zone, especially when it came to the homeless population. It was while in New York and he began connecting oneon-one with several members of the homeless and low-income population that Damm decided to change course in life. “In the span of a year, I went from attending a private Prince concert for 50 to working with men coming out of prison and homeless shelters,” says Damm, who quit his publishing job and joined a nonprofit called The Doe Fund in 2009. “Our mission was to break the cycles of homelessness, incarceration, and recidivism by providing holistic services, housing, and work opportunities. And it was exhilarating.” The position not only helped Damm find his calling, but his true love as well. “I met my now-wife, Christiana, while we worked together at Doe,” Damm says. He was also inspired to earn his master’s degree from New York University while at Doe, buoyed by a client who successfully transitioned from prison to working both a full-time job and earning his degree simultaneously. “Christiana is a Valley native. Her mother Connie Fletcher Laird – today Connie Fletcher Harrington – was the CEO of a nonprofit called ACCEL, which provides educational, behavioral, therapeutic and employment programs to individuals who have special needs.” The two were married in 2013, and moved to Arizona in

2016 to be closer to family. “I was honored to accept the role of chief financial officer at ACCEL that same year,” Damm says. When his mother-in-law retired after more than 25 years of service to the organization, Damm was humbled and honored to be chosen by his peers to accept the position of chief executive officer of ACCEL in 2018, knowing he had very big shoes to fill. Damm has also had the privilege to expand ACCEL internationally in recent years. Just prior to the pandemic and in partnership with Saudi Aramco, ACCEL opened the Ajyal Center for Comprehensive Education and Life Skills in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in late 2019. The center is the first of its kind in the region to provide high-quality therapeutic and educational services to children who have special needs. “Our goal was to put the foot on the gas pedal – or accelerate – our impact worldwide. Despite the unique set of challenges since COVID-19, we are firing at all cylinders,” says Damm, noting their operations in Arizona and worldwide are open, operating under all CDC guidelines. “Serving the members of this community and beyond who live with special needs and helping them to develop the necessary skills to work and live successfully with dignity and independence, gets me out of bed daily with a sense of purpose and such pride.” Looking ahead, Damm sees continued acceleration both in Arizona and abroad the rest of the year, literally. “When not traveling to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and United Arab Emirates to be of service, my wife and I are physically accelerating along the I-17 to our newly acquired second home near Mormon Lake, which we’ve been updating by hand for the past year.”
FOOT HEALTH
RIT for Foot & Ankle Pain BY GREER BANKS
I hate to hear that foot pain is keeping someone from their everyday life,” says Dr. Kerry Zang, podiatric medical director of CiC Foot & Ankle. Just because you’re on your feet all day or are getting older, doesn’t mean your feet should hurt. Another big reason why people live with chronic foot pain, is because they didn’t get relief from prior treatment and are not aware that there may be other options. “The thing that excites me most about being a doctor is finding new ways to help my patients. Regenerative medicine is the latest answer,” says Zang. “It doesn’t matter if you are suffering from arthritis, an old injury, Achilles tendonitis, heel pain or plantar fasciitis, pain after surgery, the list goes on and on. Regenerative medicine may be able to help.” Regenerative injection therapy (RIT) uses growth factors to help repair and restore tissue, ligaments, and joints. Until recently, anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections, like cortisone offered the best chance for relief. But, these options just reduced the symptoms. “While cortisone stops the swelling and
pain, it can also interfere with the healing process and more damage can occur,” explains Zang.
“While cortisone stops the swelling and pain, it can also interfere with the healing process and more damage can occur.” Now, doctors are able to deal with the underlying problem that is causing the pain. RIT helps the body initiate its own healing response, where the body replaces, repairs, reprograms and renews diseased or injured cells. “Sometimes the body just needs a little boost to encourage the regenerative process. The growth factors in RIT do that,” says Zang. A recent patient of Dr. Zang’s has seen wonderful results from RIT. A patient had been suffering from ankle pain after an injury and surgery three years
ago. Cortisone injections, physical therapy and pain medications did not help. He needed to wear a brace because his ankle was unstable and painful. “I couldn’t recommend additional surgery because while it may have addressed his ankle problem, I believe it would have just transferred the pain further up his leg, and most likely affect his knee,” says Zang. “I felt his best option was a growth factor injection.” Dr. Zang recognized that the patient was skeptical, and explained, “I’ve seen excellent results with ongoing pain after prior surgeries, and believed he had on opportunity to benefit as well. I advised him it could take a bit of time, but it may offer the relief he needed.” A few months after the injection, the patient noticed the pain was nearly gone. Soon after, he realized, “I [haven’t] noticed any pain…this is an unbelievable outcome so far, and I thought this could never happen. The shot works!” Dr. Kerry Zang, a Diplomate of the American Board of Foot & Surgery, is the Podiatric Medical Director at CIC Foot & Ankle and can be reached at (602) 954-0777 or azfeet.com.

Tyler Smith is serving up positive vibes one beer at a time at Kitsune Brewing
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
In Japanese, kitsune translates to “fox.” In Japanese culture, however, kitsune are often seen as a symbol of a good omen. “For me, kitsune means all things good vibes, and maybe being smart like a fox, too,” says Tyler Smith, Kitsune Brewing Company founder. Smith, a Scottsdale native who graduated from Paradise Valley High School in 2004, first learned about brewing during a house party while studying journalism and marketing at University of Arizona. “I went out that next week and purchased my own brew kit. One led to two, and two to about 200 over time,” says Smith, whose beer became the unofficial beverage of Meritage Homes’ company parties during his time on their marketing team after graduating from college. When the real estate market crashed, Smith was recruited to Portland to work for Nike in 2010, a job that required travel to Japan. In between having two children with his supportive physician wife and traveling, he still brewed when he could, perfecting his recipes. “As I was starting to burn out on travel, I kept coming across kitsune shrines in ramen shops across Asia. I took them as a sign,” Smith says. “When I went to get a tattoo once back home and the artist had just completed a kitsune-themed art show, I knew in my gut if I followed my heart that good omens would follow.” As such, Smith and his family moved back to Phoenix in 2019 to launch Kitsune Brewing Company. “My wife gave me two years to make my dream come true, and the clock did not stop when COVID19 hit,” says Smith, whose initial brewery plans were thwarted by the statewide shutdown in 2020. Smith took the setback in stride, partnering with Simple Machine Brewing Company to do contract brewing, and investing in two large-scale fermenters to assist with production. His first formal beer, a hazy IPA, hit the market in September 2020. It sold out in two weeks, as have subsequent releases. Feeling blessed, Smith is eyeing late 2021 or early 2022 to open his own shop. “And yes, plans are already in place for a kitsune shrine in homage to the ones that first inspired me,” Smith says. “Good omens and great beer for all!”

Entrepreneur Michael Zalle’s sunny outlook on life allows him to help others on and off the clock
BY ELIZABETH LIBERATORE / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Some people in this world bring extra light into it. Whether it’s their positive mindset, infectious vibes, humanitarian heart, or a combination of all three, these individuals are the ones you want in your corner. California-born Michael Zalle, a new North Scottsdale resident, is one of them. Zalle achieves his mission to have a positive effect on the world in his professional and personal life. Regarding the latter, Zalle, who was born with one hand, has been a lifelong member of the Amputee Coalition of America. He has worked with many scared parents and youth amputees over the years, providing them hope, support, and the realization that they are enough. “I teach the power of ‘you may not do it like everyone else, but you can do almost anything,’ including hanging on the monkey bars, which was a big moment for me,” Zalle says. He is also involved in the Scottsdale-based charity Neighbors Helping Neighbors and his company, YellowBird, has a volunteer program that actively gives back to the community. “It just feels good to help others,” the entreprenuer says. Professionally, Zalle is doing very similar work. He has been creating new concepts and disrupting industries through innovative technologies for 25 years. His discoveries have built companies from the ground up that focus on positively impacting others, especially those in the Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS) sector – which is where his latest venture YellowBird comes into play. Founded in 2019, YellowBird (www.goyellowbird. com) is an online gig economy platform that quickly matches EHS professionals with businesses nationwide for short-term projects. Without staffing fees or long hiring processes, EHS professionals arrive on-site and ready to work as fast as the next business day. YellowBird also allows experienced and credentialed EHS workers, many of whom are approaching retirement, to work on-demand jobs beyond retirement age and provides a soft landing for those who have been laid off or are changing careers. Like its CEO and founder, YellowBird’s mission is to help others thrive. “I wake up every morning and can’t help but feel grateful for what I have and the people around me,” Zalle says. “My family, my team at YellowBird, and my friends are the best part of my life.”

MAN ON THE MOVE Ryan Powell delivers more than just an athletic style
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Founder and CEO of Eat Clean Phx, Ryan Powell describes his style as having “casual athletic vibes” – an expected response from someone who spends his days on the go. Running the local meal delivery service calls for a combination of athleisure wear and athletic staples that are sharp yet functional. As such, Powell’s signature look is Lululemon from head to toe, with the exception of his company’s branded T-shirt. “I love that you can find everything from gym attire to slacks and a button-down shirt in the Lululemon store,” he says. As for color palette, you’ll typically find Powell in an ensemble of mostly black, white, gray and blue. “Solids have always been my thing. I’ve never been much of a pattern guy,” says Powell, noting he adds a clean pair of white shoes to complete any ensemble. When he’s not delivering healthy meals or curating new recipes in his flagship kitchen, Powell trades his athleisure look for items from Ted Baker and styles inspired by fashion icon David Beckham. “He can pull off a white V-neck with jeans or a three-piece suit,” the father of two says.
What is your most prized possession? I’ve got a pair of limited-edition self-lacing Jordan’s that I’ll hold onto forever. If someone looked in my closet they would say “this guy loves shoes!” How do you transition your look from day to night? At work I am in a fast-paced kitchen making meals for the Valley. It tends to get messy. Cleaning up, doing my hair and putting on some fresh clothes always feels good when the workday ends! What is your fashion advice for other men on the go? Don’t overdo it. Sometimes less is more.

THE DESIGNER DENTIST Danielle Masserman’s bright, joyful ensembles will put a smile on anyone’s face
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Born and raised in Scottsdale, Danielle Masserman spends most days at her pediatric dental practice, Affiliated Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics. But when she ditches her dentist uniform, it’s all about stylish yet functional outfits. Brands like Rails, Cloth & Stone, and Madewell are among her favorites for the hot Arizona summer, and she depends on Frame or Mother jeans throughout the cooler months. “I also love a good pair of Golden Goose sneakers – they add a fun element to any outfit,” the mom of two boys says. Masserman loves to make a statement, often opting for a chic animal print or wearing pops of color, like pink or yellow. “A trend I like is wearing a shirt tucked in the front or a bodysuit with jeans and a nice large logo belt,” Masserman says. “It’s always great to invest in a few accessories as well, like a trendy hat or headband – small things that can really elevate a basic outfit.” A fan of athleisure wear, Masserman stocks her closet with a variety of fun Nike and Adidas sneakers. “Colorful and animal print sneakers transition well to the weekend as they make my athleisure a little more interesting,” she says.
What is one must-have item in your closet? A simple black cocktail dress that I can accessorize with different shoes or bags to change the look but wear multiple times. How do you transition your look from day to night? Full outfit change after a shower. Due to the pandemic, we wear scrubs and head cover but scrubs have come a long way. Figs is an amazing scrubs brand and I feel great in my scrubs – the bottoms are a fitted jogger style and the top is also fitted. Blue Sky Scrubs has cute and trendy hats. How has the pandemic affected your style? As we have started to go out more, it has been nice to give my closet a refresh with flowy floral dresses. It has made me realize that I should invest in classic pieces like nice belts, bags, shoes, and jeans that are neutral.

Soon after Mark Grossman moved to Scottsdale in the mid-1990s, he met his first true love: a dirt bike. “A friend had a quad, which we used to explore all the great desert trails,” says Grossman, a Maryland native who moved here in third grade from Illinois. “Eventually, we got so into it that we decided to visit a real racetrack near Wickenburg with all sorts of motor sports, and I was immediately transfixed by dirt bike racing.” Though only about 10 at the time, Grossman begged his parents for his own dirt bike. After what felt like a solid year of pleading and producing report cards littered with A’s and B’s, he got his wish. “After that, with the exception of taking part in chorus and a few school plays, riding – and eventually racing – became my life,” says Grossman, who was known during his four years at Cactus Shadows High School for landing in the hospital annually, sometimes biannually, as a result of biking mishaps. Grossman poured blood, sweat and tears – quite literally all three as he broke no less than six bones and bruised a dozen or so ribs while racing throughout high school – into his bike. He also invested nearly every penny he earned working at his afterschool jobs (first at Harold’s Cave Creek Corral and later at Cold Stone Creamery and then Barro’s Pizza) into gear, gas, entry fees and medical bills to keep up with his expensive hobby. “When I have a passion, I tend go at it 100 miles an hour,” Grossman says. “I, unfortunately, knew in my heart I just wasn’t at the level it took to make it professionally.”
Switching Gears
After graduating Cactus Shadows in 2005 and continuing his education at Paradise Valley Community College, Grossman was at a crossroads – sadly one without professional dirt bike riding roads. He weighed investing in additional schooling before making the move to get his insurance license, though he quickly found the career path was not a fit. In fact, he worried whatever desk job he found may never feed his soul. “What would be the seeds of my career as I know it today began in my 20s, when a friend was looking to get into fashion photography,” Grossman says. “I sat for him a few times and ended up sending the So Scottsdale! resulting photos to the FORD/Robert Black Agency in Scottsdale during a casting call for new talent.” FORD/Robert Black signed Grossman in 2012, and he began going on local modeling auditions, earning several gigs along the way. Fairly early into the process, his team began sending him opportunities in the acting realm. “While I used to make short movies about dirt bike racing for my friends, being in front of the camera was a whole new world,” says Grossman, who until then had only acted in a few elementary school plays, and never on camera. “It took all of an hour into my first audition, which I funnily enough didn’t get, when I realized I’d found my second great love.”

Always one to go full throttle, after some local film roles, notably a small part in Durant’s Never Closes loosely based on the life of Durant’s founder Eddie Durant and featuring Tom Sizemore and acclaimed The Young and the Restless actress Michelle Stafford, Grossman sold his dirt bike for gas money and moved to Los Angeles in 2013. He quickly learned that without a manager or agent, booking gigs in Hollywood was rough, so much so he slept on an air mattress in a studio apartment for a year and then came home to assess what to do next. “At first I was overwhelmed – and certainly a little disappointed,” Grossman says. “After a few months, I treated what felt like a setback in the way that I would
treat getting into an accident on the track. I rested, regrouped and saved money to better equip myself for another go.”
Full Speed Ahead
Armed with a plan, and additional savings, Grossman moved back to Los Angeles in 2015 with a renewed sense of purpose. He also came armed with an agent this time around, thanks to said agent seeing him in an obscure horror movie called ABCs of Death 2 on Netflix. “It was sort of kismet. I knew securing an agent and/or manager would be my top priority after finding safe housing once back in LA,” Grossman says. “Out of nowhere, I got a call from an agent two weeks before I was set to move. Turns out, he initially

watched the movie – which I do not recommend – as he had a client in it, and he saw something in me.” The support helped push Grossman back to his usual 100 miles an hour, but this time in a far more strategic way. He would snag both modeling opportunities and small roles during his second time around in La-La Land, including a six-episode arc on Famous in Love on Freeform, before being asked to audition for a soap opera. “From casting to screen tests, I was feeling exceptionally good about the work I did to earn the part,” Grossman says. “But, I didn’t get it.” Because he had been through the process, however, when the opportunity to audition for The Young and the Restless – the No. 1 daytime drama in the country for 30 years – Grossman approached each meeting and screen test a bit more relaxed. He was asked to test with multiple stars of the show. Funny enough, while he did not test with the aforementioned Stafford in her role as Phyllis Summers, he did test multiple times with fellow Daytime Emmy Award winner Sharon Case’s character, Sharon Newman, Summers’ chief rival for the better part of 20 years. Perhaps even funnier, he had no idea the role for which he was auditioning as the casting department kept it under wraps throughout the entire process. “Turns out, it was the role of a lifetime, and I got it,” Grossman says. In May 2019, Grossman made his first appearance on The Young and the Restless as the often-devious, always-entertaining Adam Newman, which was last played by Justin Hartley. “All of the actors who’ve played Adam – who many think of as an antihero of sorts on the show – were hugely popular, and I’ve had some pretty big shoes to fill in the hearts and minds of our fans,” Grossman says. Now with just over two years under his belt, and a 2020 Daytime Emmy nomination for his work, Grossman is feeling more at ease with both the fast-paced environment of daytime television and his growing fame. Despite COVID-19, he has also been able to come back to the Valley a bit, most recently taking his mom to Sicilian Butcher and finally visiting Durant’s in person. “I know, I know. It is crazy that it took me so long to visit the restaurant that in
an odd way helped jump-start my career,” Grossman says. “The steak was perfect, by the way.” Looking ahead, Grossman is focused on continuing to win over both new and veteran soap opera fans with his portrayal of Newman. He also has his heart set on rekindling an old love. “I’ve had my eye on buying a dirt bike,
wondering what it would be like to hop on after so many years,” Grossman says. “I know what they say about riding a bike and hoping the same applies to a motorized one.” He is also looking forward to more time here in the Valley. “Genoa City – my fictional residence on TV – is great. So is LA, but Arizona is and always will be home.” So Scottsdale! June ‘21

Scott Conant Chef and Restaurateur Much like the perfect dish, a good outfit requires balance. For chef Scott Conant, this means pairing casual and luxurious elements, a philosophy that mirrors his affinity for cuisine that blurs the line between rustic and elevated. “In Italian, it’s called ‘sprezzatura’ – the art of making the elegant look easy. Even if an outfit is thrown together, it’s thrown together with intention.” He’s most often found in jeans and a well-pressed button-down (Ermenegildo Zegna is his time-honored favorite). Top it off with comfortable shoes and Conant is equipped for a day of taking his daughters to school and attending meetings at Mora Italian and The Americano. While he tends to reach for Jordans or cowboy boots most days, his shoe collection also includes footwear by Salvatore Ferragamo and Bruno Magli. And when he’s not traveling to film a show for Food Network – an occasion that often calls for a Zegna suit – Conant is usually in the kitchen, where he always reaches for one of his classic Bragard aprons. Of all his favorite meals to cook for his family – many of which are featured in his upcoming cookbook, available later this year – his mother’s cast-iron chicken with potatoes and onions is his go-to on a busy weeknight.

Demar Jackson Program Director at The Madison Growing up in Southern California imbued Demar Jackson – who you may recognize as a contestant on the last season of The Bachelorette – with a passion for practical style choices that experiment with colors and patterns. As a spin instructor at The Madison Scottsdale, Jackson can frequently be found in athleisure – quarter-zip pullovers and athletic shorts are typical, and a cup of coffee (or two, or three!) is a must for the early riser. Another essential? A nice pair of running shoes. Off the clock, Jackson – a supporter of the maxim that you can never have too many shoes – regularly reaches for a comfortable pair of Vans, an essential component of his quintessentially West Coast style. His first choice for grabbing dinner or drinks with friends is a neutral shirt with patterned pants from Zara, PacSun or H&M. A believer that fashion is an art that allows people to draw inspiration from those around them, Jackson hopes that his style choices, like everything else he does, will imbue others with a feeling of positivity and energy. And while his favorite accessories include his karma bracelet, a gold chain and mini hoop earrings, the most valuable thing Jackson owns can’t be found in his closet. “My most prized possession is my peace. It’s intangible, but it’s always going to be worth a lot.”

Jakob Chychrun Arizona Coyotes Defenseman For Jakob Chychrun, any outfit is really just an excuse to wear a great pair of shoes. The ice hockey player – who currently leads all NHL defensemen in goals after nearly 300 games with the Coyotes – has a shoe collection that would strike envy in the hearts of any sneakerhead, with a focus on limited-run collabs like Nike x Off-White. Other favorites include tried and true brands such as Gucci and Louis Vuitton, up-and-coming labels like John Geiger and a few well-loved pairs of Converse, but his most-worn pair – Air Jordan 1 Flights – puts a more modern spin on the classic high-top. For a night out, Chychrun often matches them with black jeans, a T-shirt and a bomber jacket, a simple yet refined look. Chychrun cites department stores like Saks Fifth Avenue and Neiman Marcus as convenient one-stop shopping destinations, and before a game he enjoys showcasing his personality through a Hugo Boss suit from his extensive collection, which features a wide range of colors and patterns. “I like being a little different and wearing stuff that most guys wouldn’t usually wear. There are so many different tastes and trends, but it’s about what makes you feel good – confidence can make any outfit come together.”

Scott Pasmore Good Morning Arizona Anchor A familiar face to those who start their day with Good Morning Arizona, Scott Pasmore prefers clothing that’s as easygoing as he is, whether he’s reporting as a member of Arizona’s Family or hitting the green after work. While on-air, Pasmore’s go-to is a suit and tie with a squared-off pocket square and monk strap shoes or dress sneakers. He shops for suits at everywhere from Nordstrom to Nick’s Menswear, stating that while more expensive pieces have their place, you can often find something that looks good for a great deal. Pasmore cites an early obsession of his as his fashion inspiration – GQ Magazine. “I never missed an article or picture! Now, I watch what other guys are doing and go with what I think looks best on me without copying others.” When not working or dropping by the site of his latest housing project – Pasmore builds and remodels homes on the side – the seasoned pilot enjoys spending time at his airport hangar or on the golf course, where he always gravitates toward apparel by TravisMathew. And though the Kansas-raised farm boy loves anything and everything outdoors, there’s one thing Pasmore will never be seen wearing – cutoff shorts.

Jae Crowder Phoenix Suns Player Star athlete Jae Crowder bases his fashion choices on how he feels on a given day. “My style is mood-based. I dress according to my vibe! It all depends on how I feel when I wake up.” But his two fashion rules never waver: always wear socks, and don’t mix navy blue and black. His look is also incomplete without a stylish toiletry bag for traveling, a pair of glasses and jewelry, typically a gold necklace and a watch from his prized collection. When he’s not sporting a Phoenix Suns uniform during game days, Crowder varies whether he dresses up or leans more casual depending on his destination. On off days, he prefers to spend time with family or relax by watching a movie or playing video games – a reflection of his desire to dress comfortably no matter what the occasion. Crowder’s no-stress approach to style is also evident in places he shops – he keeps an eye out for pieces from any brand, frequenting a variety of boutiques across the country like Patron of the New, The Webster and Maxfield. Crowder’s love of fashion also inspired him to start a company of his own, BO99MANN (www.bossmann.com), a comfortable streetwear brand launching later this year.

Commercial Broker Extraordinaire Market knowledge is key to Bob Lundstedt’s success.
A
s a long time, Arizona resident and seasoned commercial real estate professional, Bob Lundstedt is experienced, talented, and an expert in the North Phoenix commercial real estate market. While he grew up in Chicago, Bob explains that his love for Arizona started at an early age. His older brother played for the Chicago Cubs and was in SCOTTSDALE during the spring for spring training. Bob and his family would take annual road trips to see him for Easter. Bob describes the lasting impact these trips had on him, stating, “At 12 years old, I had a paper route, and I was always checking the Arizona weather while rolling my papers, in anticipation of our trip. Upon our first arrival, I planted in my head; palm trees & mountains, I’m moving there someday.” Bob’s childhood dream became reality, and he has now been a valuable member of the community for several decades. Bob has been in the commercial real estate business since 1981 where he has focused his efforts exclusively in the
I-17 Corridor and has represented tenants, users, investors, and landlords for Land, Office, and Industrial properties. He’s spent that time building an immensely successful career. He explains, “I have specialized in the I-17/ Deer Valley submarket for 40 years, completing land sales, building sales and leases for multiple product types varying from office, flex, industrial, storage & multi-family.” His experience in the Deer Valley market is one-of-a-kind, making his services even more valuable to clients as Deer Valley properties skyrocket in demand. Bob explains that with the number 1 busiest general aviation airport and several Fortune 500 companies in the area, Deer Valley has long been a desirable location. With the recent news that TSMC, the world’s largest computer chip manufacturer, has purchased over 1000 acres of land in the area and plan to build a multi-billion-dollar manufacturing plant, demand has gone up even more. Because of this, Bob has a straightforward, confident answer when
asked what makes him a Man to Watch in Arizona. He states, “If you want to be in Deer Valley, you will be calling me. I have sold over 200 land sites with transactions in excess of $3 billion. It’s a very tight market, so my client relationships and market knowledge will be of great value.” Bob credits his family for motivating and inspiring him to achieve the success he has in his career. He has been married to his wife Michele for 31 years and has two children Lulu and Lawson. Outside of real estate, Bob is an active member of his community, and is involved in giving back through organizations such as Boys Team Charity as well as the Boy Scouts of America. Both Bob & Lawson have earned the highest rank of Eagle Scout. All in all, Bob Lundstedt is a long-time community member who offers unique skills and experience to his clients. Dr. Goyle has created a first-of-its-kind medical practice.
D
r. Ashu Goyle treats acute and chronic pain using a multimodal approach. He blends traditional medical treatments with diet and lifestyle plans and alternative therapies to empower patients to achieve the best quality of life. Dr. Goyle’s practice, Integrated Spine, Pain, and Wellness combines cutting edge interventional treatments, and regenerative and aesthetic medicine in a community that is essentially opioid-free. Having witnessed how the opioid epidemic devastated families and communities, he is determined to provide effective non-narcotic treatments. At Integrated Spine, Pain, and Wellness, Dr. Goyle sees patients from a variety of lifestyles dealing with everything from sports injuries to normal wear and tear discomfort. His practice offers minimally invasive, non-surgical treatments while maintaining the goal of patients regaining prior levels of function. “My practice takes a fresh and comprehensive approach to helping people return to the
healthy and active lifestyles they desire,” he shares. Modalities include minimally invasive spine and joint procedures, supplement testing and guidance, and diet and lifestyle counseling. Many of his patients come to him seeking alternatives to traditional medications and procedures. “I believe that when people are living with acute or chronic pain, they may lose a part of themselves and overtime this adversely affects their wellbeing and overall quality of life,” Goyle says. And Dr. Goyle is involved in treatment from start to finish with the exception of aesthetic treatments. But rest assured, he selected the best aesthetician, his wife, for those treatments. Afterall, when you look good, you feel good. Dr. Goyle treats patients as if they are family. He believes in developing long-term connections and it’s why he left corporate medicine to develop fresh, comprehensive individualized treatment plans for clients.
“My passion for medicine grew out of my passion for music,” he says. The doctor taught himself to play guitar at only thirteen years old, having grown up with his parents exposing him and his sister to several different genres. While volunteering at a local hospital his freshman year of college, Dr. Goyle would play guitar for patients for several hours. Navigating the Pandemic U-Turn Shahe Koulloukian — Mazvo Auto Car Care Center.
I
t’s been an unprecedented year, and the impact of the pandemic has affected nearly every business in some way. But for Shahe Koulloukian, owner of Mazvo Auto Car Care Center, that only strengthens his commitment to keeping customers educated. From staying on top of the latest technologies and trends in the auto industry to understanding how they affect consumer patterns, Koulloukian is firm in his belief that the more knowledgeable he is, the better he can assist — and empower — his clientele. In Mazvo’s 25 years of business, Koulloukian has seen many changes in the way people buy, drive, and care for their cars, but especially during the last year. “Covid-19 arrived like a head on crash that swept across the economy, causing what might turn out to be permanent changes in car ownership,” he says. The forced reliance on our Internet connections shifted our perception of what can feasibly be done via computer. “Everything got done online across the board; that major shift
resulted in a big performance boost for technology and huge changes in behaviors have accelerated,” Koulloukian explains. Car buyers, he says, are now more than ever visiting dealerships and gaining information from the comfort of their couches. Used car sales are up substantially as people grapple with financial uncertainties. Automakers and dealerships are rolling out incredibly attractive deals and incentives to sell more new cars. And concern over the safety of ride-sharing and public transportation means that more people are preferring to use their own vehicles lately. It’s a whirlwind, but even despite the sweeping changes brought about by Covid-19, some things remain consistent: namely, Mazvo’s cornerstone philosophies of ethics, transparency, accountability, and quality. Upon these things, Koulloukian has built Mazvo’s rock-solid reputation as the Valley’s premier provider of not only auto care and maintenance, but empowerment as well. Koulloukian feels a deep-rooted
responsibility to be honest and forthright with his customers, encouraging them to learn about their vehicles by asking questions — and telling them exactly what they need to know, in terms that even an automotive novice can understand. He sees himself as a consumer advocate rather than the stereotypical predatorial mechanic, and is determined to change the perception around “shady” car repair businesses through education, no matter what the pandemic throws at his industry. Helping Mazvo’s customers navigate both the ins and outs of their vehicles and the inevitable industry changes is an incredibly valuable service. Koulloukian’s work involves so much more than ensuring vehicles are in proper working order. He doesn’t just want to fix cars, he wants to fix auto repair – and for his clients, knowledge is power. Glo Medspa stays ahead of the curve.
C
harles Small, Founder of Glo Medspa, combines innovative technology and years of working as a critical care nurse to offer a comprehensive menu of services from body contouring, to facials, lasers, and advanced cosmetic injectables. A long time Arizona resident, Charles became interested in a change of pace from his hospital days and wanted to focus his extensive expertise on further refining the modern medspa. He was introduced to Aesthetic Medicine by a friend and instantly fell in love with the field. As a Man to Watch, the forwardthinking professional has brought together a team of medical, beauty and wellness professionals that understand key drivers and motivation for their clientele. Providing personalized experiences, Charles and his team offer the latest advances for full face and body rejuvenation. Glo Medspa is an accomplished medical aesthetic spa and has won many accolades and awards including the
Best of Scottsdale in 2020. Consistently ranking as one of the top providers in injectables, Botox, and several other areas, Glo Medspa is continually adding new treatments to their long list of services. With such a wide range of options, there is truly something for everyone. Those interested in a facial, for example, can choose from a foaming enzyme treatment facial, exfoliating clear skin facial, or photo facial just to name a few. When asked what he feels sets him apart from other similar businesses, Charles says, “In the world of aesthetic, I stay ahead of the curve in the latest trends.” A quick look at his current and upcoming ventures confirms this is the case and makes it clear that Charles is not only talented at his work, but is also a driven and inventive individual. For example, one new service that truly sets Glo Medspa apart from their competition is that they are one of the few places that offer QWO, an FDA approved cellulite treatment. Charles describes Qwo’s
effectiveness by explaining: “The results are permanent, and may start to be seen even after the first treatment.” This sets QWO apart from the already scarce FDA approved treatments for cellulite, as many other current treatment routes are far more invasive or not as long lasting. Another new and exciting venture on the horizon from Charles is the “Glo Aesthetic Training” program- a program geared towards offering training for medical professionals such as doctors and nurses in injectables. Additionally, the program will offer training, advice, and tips on how to start and run a successful business. With all of these novel plans in process or upcoming, it would only make sense to ask Charles what motivates him. “Making people happy is a big motivation for me. I definitely have the best job ever,” he says. Contact at glomedspas.com or 480.245.6881, 10505 N. 69th St. #1000 Scottsdale, AZ 85253.

Coverage with Care
Insurance Agent, Jeremy Mueller is there when you need him.
A
ccording to business owner and insurance agent Jeremy Mueller, “you are what you eat” doesn’t just apply to food. “What you feed your mind becomes you. If you feed your mind negatively, you will become negative,” the Scottsdale native believes. Mueller is a licensed insurance agent with State Farm. He owns and operates two agency locations. After twenty years in the business, he understands that insurance can be expensive and confusing and believes in providing all the affordable coverage a client needs while making the process smooth and easy to understand. And how does he make the insurance process easy? Simple; by educating the community. He is expanding into podcasts and other non-traditional resources to educate the wider Scottsdale community about their options. His business’s core products are auto, home, condo, renters, and life insurance. However, they also provide coverage for small businesses and Mueller is proud of his
home state’s rapid growth over the past few decades. He considers himself lucky to live in such a premier destination city, and is eager to help new and longtime residents alike. “Whether you're a firsttime renter or a retiring homeowner, my agency is here to serve YOU in all stages of your life,” he shares. And he means it. “One of the things that sets us apart is the response time. In our world , when you need us, you really need us!” he says. When one client experienced a devastating house fire, Mueller beat the Red Cross to the scene. The Phoenix Fire Department’s Chief had never seen anything like it. “Being able to navigate some of life’s complexities at a time of need is a huge advantage we have,” Jeremy says. However, Mueller insists he doesn’t do it alone. “Without my team, the company would be nowhere near where we are at,” he says. The daily feedback of how his employees help clients motivates him. Naturally, you don’t have to look far to discover what impassions Jeremy
Mueller; it’s his own community. Mueller was born and raised in Scottsdale and wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. He attended Brophy High School and then Barrett Honors College at Arizona State University. It was his father and grandfather whose work in insurance helped cultivate his own interest. As a father of two, Mueller wants to create the safest environment in which his kids can thrive. He is active with Streetlight USA, a charity dedicated to helping girls recover from sexual abuse and human trafficking. In his downtime, you’re likely find Mueller jamming out to 70s and 80s rock while working out, or browsing his collection of original comic book art. Contact at Pinnacle Peak, 23341 N. Gerrish MedEsthetics
Dr. Gerrish takes a 360-degree approach to cosmetic regenerative medicine.
D
r. Scott Gerrish of Gerrish MedEsthetics wants patients who are young at heart to have an outward appearance that reflects what’s inside. With a background in both medicine and engineering, as well as over 25 years of experience in providing non-invasive cosmetic treatments, Dr. Gerrish is determined to deliver the most outstanding results in a luxury spa environment. “Regenerative medicine restores the body’s natural healing processes at the cellular level,” Dr. Gerrish shares. “Age, pollutants, sun damage, stress, and genetics all disrupt the body’s natural regenerative processes.” At Gerrish MedEsthetics, he developed a nonsurgical, signature face and neck rejuvenation he calls The Silent Lift. “With advancements in technology and my Signature Treatment Plans, patients will experience outstanding, natural results without going under the knife,” he says. He also offers body contouring services that combine CoolSculpting
ELITE and CoolTone. These processes target body fat without damaging the surrounding tissue, and stimulate muscles to firm the abdomen, thighs, and buttocks. His exclusive, multi-layered, multimodality hair rejuvenation treatment plan repairs blood vessels, promotes cell growth, decreases inflammation, and stimulates collagen production so patients can grow a healthy, lustrous head of hair. Botox hit the scene about 25 years ago, and patients have been demanding more non-invasive cosmetic procedures ever since. Dr. Gerrish understands that there is a real art that involves selecting the right tools from the toolbox rather than just a quick fix. He notes that while “hundreds of doctors have the same bottle of Botox in their office, the results are not equal.” And Dr. Gerrish believes in only using the highest quality equipment and medical compounds. His post-procedure protocol has reduced the recovery period from laser procedures by 60%. For his innovation and unwavering commitment to excellence,
Gerrish MedEsthetics was selected as an Allergen Top 250 Practice, placing him in the top 1% of all of Allergen’s practices. He has also been recognized by the Lutronic Center of Excellence and the CoolSculpting 10,000 club. Baywatch star Gena Lee Nolin attests not only to his incredible skill as a doctor, but also his character. “He is so down to Earth, warm and real.” Unlike at many other practices, where patients don’t even meet the doctor running the spa, Dr. Gerrish sees patients daily. He is such a skilled doctor that, according to a 2018 study by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Dr. Gerrish out-performs other doctors by +400%. Celebrity praise is never a bad thing in the world of cosmetic medicine, but Dr. Gerrish finds inspiration close to home. He cites his wife Jodi, and their two children Jackson and Reagan as his daily inspirations. Contact at 480.651.8110 or www.gerrishmedesthetics.com, 9831 E. Bell Rd, Scottsdale, AZ 85260.
DeFusco Law
Andrew DeFusco cares deeply about his clients and community.
F
or Andrew DeFusco, law is a family affair. Andrew and his wife Bryn are both attorneys who, in 2016, founded DeFusco Law, a referralbased personal injury law/wrongful death practice. The husband and wife duo pride themselves on not being a run-of-the-mill practice that pushes for a quick settlement, but instead provide empathy and closure to persons experiencing lifealtering injuries or grief after losing a loved one in a preventable accident. Andrew emphasizes that DeFusco Law is a referral-based practice and not high volume. He and Bryn take time to get to know clients in order to serve their legal needs in the most beneficial and personalized manner. They owe every client to the sparkling reputation they have garnered through past cases. Because their primary marketing technique is old-fashioned wordof-mouth, they thrive as a low-volume firm providing personalized service to clients often during the lowest point in their lives.
Clients come to DeFusco Law with devastating injuries after accidents. Or, more tragically, the families of victims of fatal accidents come to their firm seeking justice. Andrew feels motivated by clients who have suffered life-altering injuries yet refuse to let the injuries define their future or prevent them from living a fulfilling life. He fondly recalls one client, who suffered a career-ending injury to her dominant arm, telling him, “This will not break me.” Andrew learned as a child to never give up. His parents divorced when he was a boy, and his mother worked as a legal secretary to provide for her five children. “As a child, my mother always told me that I could do whatever I wanted to do in life provided I was willing to put forth the effort,” he says. And the words define his practice to this day. He has distanced himself from what he describes as commercialized law, which means working harder to provide victims with the justice and closure they need to move forward, and live beyond the accident.
As successful lawyers, Andrew and Bryn are dedicated to giving back. In 2018, they established the Scottsdale Unified School District Teacher Stipend Program, which each year provides at least ten teachers in the SUSD with a stipend of at least $300 for school supplies. So far, they have donated nearly $20,000 worth of supplies. They are also active in the charities Arizona Center for Law in Public Interest as well as the New Life Center Domestic Violence Shelter. His wife serves on the boards for both organizations. Passionate about public education, DeFusco Law also supports the Arizona Pet Project, Coronado High School PTSO, and NotMyKid, among others. In his free time, you’ll find Andrew riding his bicycle and spending time with family and friends at the piano bar in his home! Contact at www.defuscolaw.com or 480.970.3000, 6945 E. Concierge Mental Wellness Innovation is at the core of Dr. Shaw’s practice.
P
hysician. Neuroscientist. American Board-Certified addictionologist and preventive medicine specialist. It’s evident from those qualifications alone that Dr. Christian Shaw is highly qualified, innovative, and experienced. After years of practicing addiction medicine, Dr. Shaw became frustrated with the limited medications available for treating individuals suffering from substance use disorders. Relying on his background in research and integrative medicine, he began performing patient case studies evaluating cannabidiol (CBD) as an alternative treatment for mental health disorders. Based on the success of his clinical research, Dr. Shaw co-founded REBEL MD, a cannabinoid therapeutics company offering patient tested, medical grade cannabinoid products as treatment options for mental and physical health conditions. As to date, Dr. Shaw has performed multiple patient case studies using CBD and other cannabinoids for management of opioid withdrawal,
autoimmune disease, insomnia, depression, anxiety, and pain. We asked Dr. Shaw what his professional plans are for 2021. “COVID-19 has significantly contributed to increased mental health disorders, particularly addiction and depression. Many individuals that would benefit from receiving treatment have thus far decided not to pursue it. They either have grown accustomed to the comfort of staying home and self-medicating with drugs or alcohol, have highprofile public or professional reputations that require considerable confidentiality or simply do not want to engage in the interactive group dynamic used by conventional addiction and mental health treatment centers. To address this, I will be offering reservations to a limited and exclusive concierge addiction and mental wellness service specializing in treating patients within the comfort of their own home or desired confidential setting.” Dr. Shaw’s drive helping patients achieve recovery from addiction to reach
mental wellness is evident in his professional educational background. In addition to his American Board of Preventive Medicine certifications in Public Health, General Preventive Medicine and Addiction Medicine, he received training for Integrative Medicine at the Andrew Weil Center and completed his PhD at the Montreal Neurological Institute and Hospital. His clinical training in several countries, including the United States, Canada, England, and South Africa, has provided him with a more global perspective on patient care and medical treatment options. In his own words, Dr. Shaw explains that “there is an increasing shift in patient mindset toward use of natural medicines in place of conventional pharmaceutical medications. To provide the best patient care experience and possible outcome, physicians must be open to using alternative and complementary medical treatments.” Dr. Shaw invites interested parties to contact him by email at info@ rebelmd.com or visit www.rebelmd.com

Through many years of hard work and industry expertise, David strives to create efficiencies for his clients where they know multiple financial services are being delivered with the highest level of knowledge, fiduciary responsibility, and care. Most people traditionally have a separate CPA and financial advisor, Dobrusin provides several disciplines within one company. “Having the ability to answer client’s investment questions and then also make them aware of the tax implications within the same meeting is what truly sets us apart,” he says. “There are very few CPA, CFP® professionals
within Arizona or throughout the country. In turn, this takes the responsibility of coordinating multiple professionals off their shoulders” he says. With the new administration in place, there will be a lot of changes within both the tax code and how the stock markets will react to these changes. David and his team stay on top of these changes and strategically plan according to the everchanging environment so their clients will be well prepared for whatever lies ahead. “Understanding my client’s tax situation while also managing their investments is critical when making financial decisions.” David notes that the highlight of his career is the people he surrounds himself with. “Growing up in Scottsdale and opening my own practice here and being a part of this community has been truly incredible. Many of our clients have become close friends and anything I can do to help improve their lives gives me incredible joy,” he shares. Giving back to the community
has always remained at the forefront of David’s life. He has been a Board Member of the Phoenix 20/30 club, Board member and Treasurer of the Children in Need Foundation, member of the Suns Charities 88, and is actively involved with EO Arizona (Entrepreneurs’ Organization). Drawing inspiration from his family, David stays motivated by his father’s selfdiscipline and hard work ethic and his wife and children’s willingness to support his dreams. “My dedication to my wife Mara and our three boys, Benjamin (7), Matthew (5) and Zachary (3 months) is the reason I do what I do and why I work so hard,” David says. Real Estate Rockstars
Peter Hall is the protégé of Real Estate power duo, Jack and Raul.
A
s the saying goes, Peter Hall gets by with a little help from his friends. The Bay Area native relocated to Scottsdale to study Urban and Regional Development at the University of Arizona, and in only four years has made quite the splash in the city’s real estate scene. Hall was working in condominium development when he took an opportunity to work directly with Jack Luciano and Raul Siqueiros. He started as Jack and Raul’s Executive Assistant, and has since elevated himself to Junior Partner within Jack & Raul “A Real Estate Group” thanks to his work ethic and loyalty. At J&R, the three men offer clients an elevated real estate experience. They describe themselves as “relationship powered and lifestyle inspired.” The partners dig deep into marketing techniques and closely analyze the demographics and psychographics of prospective buyers and sellers. The combination of social media marketing and buyer examination sets them apart from the competition.
Hall’s goal is to match buyers from all over the world with the perfect luxury property for them. They use a simple three step method to create success for their clients: Analyze, Strategize, Execute. It’s worked tremendously in their favor. Not even five full months into the new 2021 year, they have already surpassed $30 Million in sales volume. And at 25 years old, Hall became the youngest real estate agent in Arizona to sell a listing representing the seller at a price point over $3.5 million. The three men are currently members of the exclusive REALM network, which includes only the best agents in the country. Additionally, Realty Executives has ranked them in the top 3 real estate teams in the world. However, Jack & Raul “A Real Estate Group” has an accepting, open minded approach. The men are unpretentious, and pride themselves on selling a lifestyle that’s inclusive of all communities special amenities and area highlights. They also consider the broker community their network rather
than their competition, and in doing so extend their value and access for clients. “It takes a special kind of finesse to understand the mindset of buyers and sellers, architectural significance, market trends, and local hot spots that encompass the lifestyle we treasure here in Arizona,” Hall believes, “and we have that finesse.” Hall happily acknowledges the guidance of Jack and Raul as part of the foundation of his success, but he also owes it to his own grit and determination. Hall pursued his real estate license while still a junior in college, and has built his own book of success while collaborating with his partners. His eyes are on the future, with the short-term plan to double his business this year as he has every year before. “I am the prodigy of two extremely notable agents in the Paradise Valley and Scottsdale markets and my goal is to become one of the most successful agents in Arizona, in the luxury market, by the time I’m 30,” he shares. The Paleo Cardiologist
Dr. Jack Wolfson’s goal is to bring heart health naturally to the world.
D
r. Jack Wolfson is a board-certified cardiologist and author of The Paleo Cardiologist: The Natural Way to Heart Health. The bestselling author and Midwest native arrived in Arizona in 2002 and established his own medical practice after 10 years working in hospitals. Wolfson founded Natural Heart Doctor, where he takes a 21st century approach to holistic medicine. “Heart disease can be prevented, treated and reversed naturally without medications and surgeries,” he says. Heart attacks, strokes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol can all be helped naturally. Pharmaceuticals are not the answer, according to Dr. Wolfson. “Not many doctors provide the quality of care that I do. Most are stuck in the “pill and procedure” paradigm of sickness care,” Wolfson shares. Heart health, he insists, is achieved with good nutrition, quality sleep, outdoor physical activity, and a positive mental attitude. With the help of a diverse team of doctors, nutritionists and coaches who
practice holistic care, Dr. Wolfson creates unique treatments for individuals seeking to improve cardiovascular health by getting to the root of the problem. “You are built to be healthy. Don’t blame your genetics. Give your body what it needs and remove what it does not. That is the key,” he shares. Wolfson developed his philosophy after tragedy struck. His father was dying and not even the Mayo Clinic could figure out why. And working in hospitals with heart attacks, strokes, and dying patients was no relief. “I saw sickness all around me” he laments. One woman, however, knew exactly what was happening and why there was so much sickness. And that was Dr. Heather, a Doctor of Chiropractic Medicine. “Heather explained exactly why my father was sick and dying. And I listened to her.” Shortly thereafter, The Drs. Wolfson married and now have 4 beautiful children who were all born at home and raised naturally. At Natural Heart Doctor, Wolfson is focused on cardiac longevity. First visits are 90 minutes and follow ups are typically 45
minutes. Using the most advanced testing in the world, he provides a customized plan for the “100 year heart” and beyond. The expert team of nutritionists and coaches that work alongside the doctors develop nutrition and lifestyle programs for sustainable improvement. And it doesn’t stop there. This fall, Wolfson will open the flagship location for Natural Heart Doctor here in Scottsdale. He is also launching Cardiology Coffee, a line of organic coffee that has been tested for mold and other impurities. “Coffee can be heart healthy,” he knows, as long as you’re drinking the right stuff. He and his wife are supporters of ChildHelp, Friends of Honduran Children, and both domestic and international animal rescues. His goal in life is to help others and Wolfson wants nothing more than to prevent others from suffering his father’s fate and provide people with a path to 100 years and more. Helping Arizonans, One Loan at a Time.
R
obert W. Schreyer, CEO of Arizona Home Loan, is changing the way people view home loans by using them as tools to help his clients’ reach their financial goals, including retirement. Robert is a respected leader in the Arizona market and has over 25 years of experience in the mortgage industry. He started Arizona Home Loan with the goal to not just close home loans, but to assist his valued clients to reach their financial objectives. “There are a lot of lenders in the Valley that you can go to for a home loan, but very few will take the time to personalize and plan the best home loan for you and your family to meet your future or current goals, no matter what season of life you are in,” he says. Robert also adds that each person they have the honor to work with is not just another loan unit, but a valued client who deserves the best personal service which comes with mortgage planning. “We spend the time getting to know each client on a personal level and we
pride ourselves on being the trusted mortgage experts to help guide our valued clients through the process,” he says. This philosophy has helped make Arizona Home Loan one of the best boutique lenders here in Arizona. Robert knows that home loans shouldn’t be complicated and his job is to make the process as easy and seamless as possible. Whether you're buying, selling, refinancing, or building your dream home, you have a lot riding on your loan specialist and that is where Robert’s expertise and dedication comes in. Last year was quite the year for the mortgage industry as they worked through the pandemic which forever changed the way businesses operate and saw mortgage rates dip down to one of the lowest levels ever. But Robert saw it as an opportunity to improve processes and streamline the way they do business at Arizona Home Loan, which has helped improved the service level even more to their valued clients.
“There's no secret success, simply offer incredible, personalized service and value, follow through and you will win clients for life”. Robert is a native to Arizona and loves his state and everything it offers. “I would not want to live anywhere else on the planet. The people and weather are great, and our state offers so much to do and explore in this beautiful desert”. When he's not leading Arizona Home Loan or serving his valued clients, Robert spends time with his four awesome kids, volunteering at his church and now that the summer is here, you will find him at the lake most weekends surfing on his boat with friends and family. “To me, success is having family and friends that love you, loving what you do and being able to have an impact on the world one person at a time.” Robert says. From Nothing to Something
Brent Orsuga built his recruiting firm from the ground up.
B
rent Orsuga, or as some call him “The Jerry Maguire of Freight,” has built a seven-figure business in as many years. And he’s here to tell you it isn’t easy, but it is worth it. Orsuga is the founder and President of Pinnacle Growth Advisors, an executive recruiting company focused solely on the logistics and freight industry. What started as an office setup in a bedroom is now a national firm working with billion-dollar companies. Orsuga prides himself on not just talking the talk, but walking the walk. He shares behind the scenes glimpses into his life as an entrepreneur and father of two and wants to make it clear that what he does isn't easy. “There’s a difference between people who “play” entrepreneur on social media and those who actually put the work in,” he says. Orsuga has also figured out how to effectively utilize social media as a marketing tool. Recruiting is a people business, and posting on Instagram and Linkedin allow potential clients to get to
know him and his business. It’s a form of networking that has paid off. Pinnacle Growth Advisors serves customers who come to them seeking the top talent to join their team. Orsuga knows that hiring the right employees is the biggest obstacle many companies face, so his team of scouts, advisors, and partners play “matchmaker” to bring companies the best people out there. And he knows exactly what type of person to seek out. He is interested in high performers who have concrete goals for their lives and actually work towards them, as opposed to just floating around. But he’s not only vetting potential employees, rather than looking out for his recruits. He always does a “sniff test” to ensure that a company has already established an energizing, productive environment and has been known to travel across the country, meeting with clients in person so that he can learn about the workplace culture and leadership before recruiting has begun. “If I wouldn’t work there, why would I send someone else to
work there?” He quotes Zig Zaglar, “if you help enough people get what they want, you will always get what you want in return.” There is no shortcut, only hard work. “Your pay is directly proportional to the value you bring to the marketplace,” he says. “To this day I still invest a lot into myself through coaching and mentoring to be the best version possible.” Orsuga was born in San Jose, California. He attended Arizona State University and never left. Recently, he won the ASU Sun-Devil 100 Award back-to-back. The award honors alumni who have built and led successful businesses across the globe. He is also an active member of the EO (Entrepreneur’s Organization) and lives in north Scottsdale with his wife, Susannah, and their two daughters, Blythe and Blair where they are active members of the DC Ranch Country Club. ARIZONA SUNSHINE COMES WITH A WARNING: PROTECT YOUR SKIN
T
he summer days begin sooner and end later here in the Valley of the Sun, and that means it’s even more important to protect your skin. While many travel – or even move – to Arizona because of the abundant sunshine, it’s important to remember the hazards of exposure to excessive ultraviolet radiation. “While many skin cancers may be easily treatable, some like melanoma that are caused by sunburns can be deadly and there is no amount of skin damage that is safe,” says Samuel Ejadi, MD, Chief of Medical Oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Phoenix. “Tanning occurs after the skin is damaged. Protection from skin damage caused by excessive ultraviolet radiation in sunshine that can lead to premature wrinkling and skin cancer is vital for everyone. While those with darker skin may not get a sunburn from overexposure, that does not mean their skin is not being damaged just the same as someone with fair skin.” With nearly 3.5 million cases diagnosed each year, skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States, and government officials estimate that one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. The good news is that skin cancer is largely
preventable and reducing your risk of sun damage is easier than you might think. Here are some tips to help protect your skin this summer, or any time of the year: • Avoid the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Don’t be fooled by cloudy days. The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that up to 80 percent of the sun’s damaging UV rays can penetrate the clouds. • Follow the shadow rule and teach it to your kids. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and it’s time to seek shade. • Wear protective clothing. Tightly woven fabric that you can’t see through when you put it up to the light provide the best sun protection. Wide brim hats protect sensitive areas like the back of the neck. • Get sunglasses with UV protection that absorb up to 99 percent or 100 percent of UV rays. • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily on sun exposed skin, even when you’re running errands or driving around town. This will protect skin against both UVA and UVB rays. When planning outdoor activities, be sure to apply generous amounts to
your face and body—and lip balm. And reapply throughout the day, especially after sports or water activities. • Need a reminder on when you’ve had too much sun? There are a number of wearable gadgets—from UV-measuring wristbands to smartphone apps that draw data from sun patches on your skin— that alert you when it’s time to reapply the sunscreen or get out of the sun. • Avoid tanning beds. • Examine your skin from head to toe once a month and go to the doctor if you notice any irregularities. Be sure to enlist a loved one or hairdresser to help examine those hard to see places like your scalp or behind your ears. • See your dermatologist once a year for professional full-body skin exams. Whatever you do, the key is to avoid excessive ultraviolet radiation as much as possible. Your genetics and UV light are the main factors linked to squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas of the skin, and likely the majority of basal cell carcinomas. AVIATION & ARTISTRY Jeff Krausert’s life journey of pursuing two passions
BY GABBY LEIGHTON

Jeff Krausert is one of the lucky people to pursue both of his life’s passions: aviation and art. Originally from Minneapolis, Minnesota, Krausert’s love for the arts began as a hobby in middle school. He started with sketching and painting, which then advanced to studying cartooning and oil painting. “I became art editor for the school newspaper as well as the yearbook staff where I designed and sketched my senior yearbook in 1974,” Krausert says. He then went on to major in fine art, pursuing oil painting and studying art history at University of Minnesota. “My biggest influences were Norman Rockwell, and cartoonist Mort Drucker. I find Norman Rockwell's work most compelling and fascinating, and I use his painterly style in my portraits and caricature sketches,” Krausert says. After graduating in 1979, he switched gears to pursue a career in aviation, joining the Air Force in 1980 and serving a successful 20-year career before retiring from Air Force One in 2001. Though he had aviation on the mind, his love for art never faded. “Throughout my flying career in the Air Force, I was continuously producing artwork for various squadrons, high-ranking leadership, the White House, and Air Force One,” Krausert says. “I painted aviation wall murals, designed T-shirts, logos, Air Force One Christmas cards and caricatures for retiring White House military staff personally signed by sitting presidents.” He also won first place in the USAF Artist Craftsman Competition with his Native American wood carvings. Upon leaving the Air Force, Krausert went back and forth between his two passions. He flew for Prince Bandar bin Sultan (Saudi Ambassador to the United States) before retiring from flying in 2005 to open an art gallery in Charlottesville, Virginia. But his retirement didn’t last long as he was soon up in the air again, this time relocating to the Valley to serve as Scottsdale-based Discount Tire founder Bruce Halle’s chief pilot in 2006. His love for two industries finally collided, as he also worked as Halle’s design/portrait artist, producing numerous portraits, illustrations, logos and aircraft paint schemes. “The greatest highlight, and most special part of my career were the years I worked closely with Bruce T. Halle, owner of Discount Tire, who, aside from leading his successful company, was an avid art collector,” Krausert says. “Through the many portraits and design work he commissioned, he personally involved himself in the creative process, guiding me with a focus on quality and attention to detail, helping me produce a body of work I never thought possible.” These days, Krausert mostly does commissioned oil portraits, paintings, sketches, and caricatures. Permanent Make-up
& BEYOND Microblading
BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

One of the most successful racing cars of all time, the original Bugatti Type 35 was brought to fame in the 1920s and won 2,000 races during its career. In 1926, as a birthday present for his son, Ettore Bugatti built a half-scale Type 35, which eventually became an official Bugatti vehicle called The Bugatti Baby and went into production from 1927 to 1936 with only 500 made. To celebrate Bugatti’s 110th anniversary, The Little Car Company introduced the Baby II, a contemporary tribute to the small original, with just 500 cars available. The Baby II is a three-quarters-size replica of the Bugatti Type 35, so it can be driven by adults, and was created using the latest technology. Additional highlights include a plaque displaying its unique chassis number, Bugatti’s signature turned aluminum dashboard and a scale recreation of the Type 35’s distinctive four-spoke steering wheel. $36,500 at www.bugattibaby.com. 2021 AUDI R8 PERFORMANCE The auto roars back into town with power and beauty BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS 2021 Audi R8 Performance
The 2021 Audi R8 is beautiful, powerful and has an incredible roar. It’s powered by a behemoth of an engine with as much as 602 horsepower, depending on the chosen model. After taking a break for the 2019 model year, the R8 returned last year with freshened enhancements. The R8 is powered by a 5.2-liter naturally aspirated midengined V-10 and goes from zero to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds, with a top speed of 205 mph delivered via full-time all-wheel drive quattro seven-speed S tronic transmission. The two-seater is the most powerful Audi production model ever made. The R8 is offered as a coupe and a convertible called Spyder. While previous R8 models were all-wheel drive exclusively, the newly introduced 532-horsepower, entry-level 2021 R8 model offers buyers a rear-wheel drive only option. Now, in order to get all-wheel drive and 602 horsepower, one must purchase the more expensive and more powerful R8 Performance. The interior of the R8 tested here felt luxurious with a sense of classy tailoring. It was refreshingly simple and uncluttered with a beautifully sculpted instrument panel and quilted

Operating instruments are presented and delivered via Audi’s superb virtual cockpit gauge cluster, which displays both the instrumentation and the MMI (Multi Media Interface) infotainment system. The standard navigation is high resolution and can be operated via voice command, through the steering wheel mounted buttons, or with the round mouse mounted on the center console. Standard tech incudes an onboard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Other operating controls are well located, intuitive and attractive. Behind the wheel, acceleration, as expected, is blistering and comes on to the dulcet, thunderous exhaust notes. The chirping and biting of the 20-inch tires only add to driving excitement. Shifts are seamless and when set to Sport mode, the transmission convincingly mimics a rev-matching manual shift transmission. Tenacious flat road course cornering and grip delivers decidingly ultra-high-performance handling. Overall, the experience is extraordinary and the ride is expectedly firm yet comfortable.

Nestled between Prescott and Coconino National Forest rests Talking Rock Ranch, a private golf community dually inspired by the ruggedly beautiful high desert landscape and the luxuries of a well-appointed resort. Starting this month, however, visitors are now invited to sample them through the Talking Rock Discovery Experience. “In May, we completed our club cabin,” says Bianca Haggenmuller, vice president of marketing and communications at Talking Rock Ranch. “This fully furnished escape from the ordinary is both to allow our residents additional space to host their visiting friends and family as well as to welcome guests unfamiliar with Talking Rock to immerse themselves in our community.” The cabin has four bedrooms, 4 1/2 bathrooms, a full kitchen, a working fireplace, dining and living areas, and multiple outdoor spaces. The tour – whether in person or virtual – aims to give guests a lay of the land, including the opportunity to check out the pool, tennis and pickleball courts; scout for the best hiking and biking trails; and preview the Jay Morrish-designed championship golf course as well as the putting and chipping courses. PHOENIX, AZ (MAY 17, 2021) — Childhelp, the non-profit organization dedicated to the prevention and treatment of child abuse, honored Dr. Stacie J. Stephenson with the prestigious Woman of the World award on Saturday, May 15 at the 17th Annual Drive the Dream Gala at the Arizona Biltmore Resort in Phoenix. “The VibrantDoc,” philanthropist and author of the instant bestseller VIBRANT: A Groundbreaking Program to Get Energized, Own Your Health, and Glow (BenBella; Pub Date: March 23, 2021), joins Oprah, Kathie Lee Gifford, First Ladies Barbara Bush, Laura Bush, and Nancy Reagan, and most recently, Melani Walton, as recipient of this highly regarded honor. Dr. Stephenson and her husband Richard J Stephenson, founder and chairman of Cancer Treatments of America, are longtime supporters of the organization, and have served as chairs at both the 2017 Drive the Dream Gala as well as Childhelp’s 60th Anniversary celebration in 2019. To further kick off this year’s festivities, they arrived at the historic Arizona Biltmore Hotel, an official Phoenix Point of Pride, in a custom horse and carriage. The event drew actors, musicians, and other celebrities in support of Childhelp’s programs and services, which have benefitted 11 million children over more than 62 years. To follow in the footsteps of such courageous women is a privilege, and an opportunity that I do not take for granted.” “The COVID-19 pandemic has made it more important than ever to shine a light on the disturbing prevalence of child abuse and neglect,” said Childhelp Co-Founder, Chairman and CEO Sara O’Meara. “Since the pandemic began, we’ve seen a 46% increase in volume to our Childhelp National Child Abuse Hotline, at a time when it’s harder than ever for mandatory reporters to assist. We are honored to work with The VibrantDoc Stacie J. Stephenson to raise awareness of this issue and fight on behalf of the most vulnerable Americans.” Childhelp Co-Founder, Vice-Chairman and President Yvonne Fedderson added, “Stacie J. Yellowstone National Park offers once-in-a-lifetime wonders amid wide open spaces
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ PHOTOS COURTESY OF YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK
There are a host of wild characters in Paramount’s hit television drama Yellowstone. The first is Kevin Costner’s rugged John Dutton, patriarch of the show’s central family and the sixth-generation owner of the fictional Yellowstone Ranch. Then, there is Kelly Reilly’s Beth Dutton, arguably the fiercest female character on television right now, and Cole Hauser’s Rip Wheeler, the gritty ranch hand and Beth’s true love. But beyond the fictional characters, there is a very real and even wilder character that brings the show to vivid life: Yellowstone National Park. And it turns out that the drama only scrapes of the surface of what the more than 2.2 million-acre park has to offer. Established as the first national park in the United States in 1872 after President Ulysses S. Grant and Congress saw artist Thomas Moran and photographer William Henry Jackson’s paintings and photos of the region, Yellowstone National Park is primarily located in Wyoming, but it does cross the border into Montana and Idaho a bit as well. Given its sheer size, there are five entrances to the park. A best bet is to pick attractions and then choose the entrance closest to said attractions.
North The north entrance, which is located in Montana and open yearround, resembles the entrance to Jurassic Park thanks to its 50-foot Roosevelt Arch, which was dedicated by President Teddy Roosevelt in 1903. This particular entrance offers the fastest route to Mammoth Hot Springs, which features limestone and travertine formations as well as several dozen steaming hydrothermal wonders one may explore thanks to two sturdy boardwalks. It also happens to be the perfect place to start an American safari due to its relatively short distance to Lamar Valley, often nicknamed America’s Serengeti due to its large and visible populations of large animals. Lamar Valley is home to elk, bison, grizzly and black bears, several packs of wolves and a variety of bird species.
Northeast For those who have animal sightings high on their Yellowstone itinerary, there is also a northeast entrance that is even closer to Lamar Valley, open now through about mid-October. While it does not have an arch, the route to this entrance is dramatic in its own way. Called Beartooth Highway, the 68-mile National Scenic Byway climbs 5,000 feet through pine forests, alpine lakes and vibrant wildflowers and offers views of nearly two dozen mountain peaks.

East As with the northeast entrance, the east entrance is only open for part of the year, now through midfall. Water lovers will gravitate toward this Wyoming entrance as it is the path of least resistance (and least distance) to Yellowstone Lake as well as waterfalls as far as the eye can see. Yellowstone Lake boasts 110 miles of shoreline and is the largest body of water within the park and remains cold year-round, notably not even thawing until May or June each year. Given this, swimming is prohibited in the lake, but alternative activities abound thanks to the Bridge Bay Marina and historic Lake Yellowstone Hotel & Cottages. The Bridge Bay Marina offers both one-hour scenic cruise tours as well as boat rentals ranging from rowboats to 18-foot motorized options. There are also fishing boat tours and charters available daily and dock ship rentals for those who towed their own boats as well as kayaks, canoes and more. When on any vessel, it is hard to miss the yellow Lake Yellowstone Hotel nestled along the shoreline. One of the best places to stay in the entire park, the hotel is more than 100 years old but is renovated regularly, giving it historic charm with all the modern conveniences of today. Beyond the lake, the east entrance is also the gateway to copious waterfalls, most right off the main drag of the road. There are almost 300 total waterfalls in the park itself, so this route is a perfect way to take in dozens in short order then plan time to go back to the favorites.
West Speaking of favorites, among many visitors’ favorite attractions in the park is its geysers – especially the Old Faithful geyser. All of the geysers are best accessed through the west entrance, located on the Wyoming/Montana border, also open now through early fall. Named for its frequent eruptions every two hours, Old Faithful was the first geyser named in the park and today is joined by at least 150 other hydrothermal brethren. There are so many, in fact, several are grouped into geyser basins. The largest in Yellowstone is called the Lower Geyser Basin and it includes Fountain Paint Pot, Firehole Lake Drive area and the Great Fountain Geyser.
South Finally, for those who want to do it all, but with the most luxurious of accommodation and dining options, there is the south entrance, open now through late fall and close to the ritzy Jackson and Jackson Hole regions in Wyoming. En route to Yellowstone, many often make a pit stop at Grand Teton National Park along the way. Once in, you will drive about 20 miles until you start hitting the western geysers and then may begin along that route to experience everything else. Whistlepig Piggyback Rye A masterpiece by late founding father of craft distilling Dave Pickerell, this is one of the last recipes he was able to fully realize. Every flavor is intentional, from its aromas of fresh cinnamon and black peppercorn to its distinctive notes of cardamom and cured leather to the taste to its long finish full of vanilla and citrus. $49.99. www.whistlepigwhiskey.com.
Chicken Cock Kentucky Straight Bourbon Full bodied with a creamy – almost buttery – mouthfeel, this 160-yearold brand’s homage to its original recipe showcases dried fruit on the nose, which offers a nice sweetness, then both caramel and vanilla to the taste. The sweeter notes are balanced by rich toasted oak at the finish. $73.99. www. chickencockwhiskey.com.
Old Elk Blended Straight Bourbon Whiskey Using four times more malted barley than traditional recipes, this San Francisco World Spirits Competition gold medal winner is both robust and smooth with a light sweetness. The nose offers a bouquet of vanilla and cloves before woody flavors combined with almond and maple syrup dance on the palate. $54.99. www.oldelk.com.
Standard Proof Whiskey Pecan Rye This premium rye whiskey is aged in American oak barrels, then infused with roasted pecans for 14 weeks. The whiskey is then filtered, rested and bottled, and the result is a spicy, nutty flavor profile so distinctive that it earned a gold medal at the famous World Spirits Competition. $39.99. www. standardproofwhiskey.com.
Four Roses Small Batch Select This non-chill filtered whiskey and Sunset International Spirits Competition gold medal winner debuted in Arizona this April. Made from hand-selected barrels, each aged a minimum of six years, it bursts with notes of apricots, berries, vanilla and light oak and offers a seductively lingering finish. $61.99. www.fourrosesbourbon. com.
Shibui Single Grain 10-YearOld White Oak Made from Japanese Indica longgrain rice and distilled, matured and bottled in Okinawa, Japan, this ultrapremium whiskey that has been aged at least 10 years in virgin European white oak is a collector’s dream. There are flavors here one would never expect, including tropical fruit salad, sea salt caramel and whipped cream, but each one is a welcome surprise. $179.99. www.shibuiwhisky.com.
Makers Mark Cask Strength This is the first cask strength release from the iconic, award-winning brand. Essentially, Cask Strength turns up the volume on the already near pitch-perfect oak, caramel, vanilla and spice notes. It is big, bold and expressive, with an earthy finish of tobacco and leather, making it the perfect pairing for a quality cigar. $53.99. www.makersmark.com.
Blood Oath Pact No. 7 This dazzling blend of three Kentucky straight rye bourbon whiskies aged eight to 14 years is extra special as its finished in casks that once held Sauternes, a sweet Bordeaux white wine. There is a balance of sweetness and spice in each sip, with clear notes of caramel, oak, apricots, honey and peaches. $99.99. www. luxrowdistillers.com.

Born to a family of Sicilian immigrants in Venezuela, Nonna Urban Eatery executive chef Gian Franco Brugaletta often showcases dishes inspired by his own life. New to the menu, the Tuna Tataki ($18) is no exception as Brugaletta is both a past Global Sushi Challenge competitor and eight-year veteran of Buddha-Bar Monte-Carlo in Monaco. For the dish, bluefin tuna that has been seared in sesame oil is sliced and plated with cilantro-infused pesto, quinoa, a dot of balsamic vinegar, edible flowers and Brugaletta’s secret ingredient: wasakaka. A common sauce in his native Venezuela that tastes like a guacamole salsa verde, wasakaka is made with avocado, olive oil, salt, pepper, lime juice, cilantro, parsley, onions, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and peppers. The mixture adds creamy acidity to the meaty and smoky yet light dish. Nonna, 7240 E. Main St., Scottsdale; 480.663.3296; www.nonnascottsdale.com. So Scottsdale! June ‘21

SKY BLUE BEAUTY The tropical Cloud 9 at EVO tastes like summer at the beach
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
Many of the dishes on the EVO menu are inspired by classic recipes from central and northern Italy, where owner Nick Neuman would visit his mother’s family as a child. The same can be said for the cocktail menu, which has a smattering of Italian spirits, including Aperol, prosecco and Campari, in several recipes. “Even our cocktails that don’t have an Italian ingredient in the build are inspired in some small way by that region,” says Dominic Scappaticci, bar manager of EVO. “I am also personally inspired by bright, bold colors that make a statement when they come to the table.” The Cloud 9 ($12) is a perfect example of both ideologies in one glass. Its electric blue color transports consumers to the vibrant shores of the Mediterranean Sea. “We use the Platinum Vodka brand as our base spirit,” says Scappaticci, noting it is distilled seven times for exceptional purity and a smooth, polished, crisp finish. “And as one might expect, the hue is thanks to our secondary spirit, Giffard Blue Curacao, which has both bitter and sweet citrus notes.” Adding to this surefire summery cocktail is a hint of Coco Real Cream of Coconut puree as well as a squeeze of lime. “We shake [the ingredients] with ice and strain into a coupe glass before adding toasted coconut sugar as garnish and to bring out the island vibe bouquet,” Scappaticci says. Though the vodka gives the cocktail a bit of heat on the palate, the citrusy Blue Curacao brings a beachy feel while the toasted and pureed coconut add a touch of sweetness. EVO, 4175 N. CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Josh Pickard of Ocean Prime
As the executive chef of Ocean Prime on High Street in Phoenix, Josh Pickard delights in dishing up an impressive menu of seafood and exquisite cuts of steak paired with chic cocktails and a Wine Spectator-honored wine list.
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
What inspired you to cook? Honestly, it was television. I grew up – both in Phoenix and Los Angeles – watching the Food Network and its stars, especially Tyler Florence and Emeril Lagasse. By 16, I made my way into my first kitchen, with my mind set on doing what they did. I never considered anything else. Tell us about your journey to Ocean Prime. I graduated from the Arizona Culinary Institute in 2003, then moved to California briefly for an opportunity before getting my first big break at Talking Stick Golf Club in 2005. Through Talking Stick, I became friendly with Jagger Griffin, who would eventually become the executive chef at Ocean Prime. I moved over there in 2012 to become his sous chef, and after completing the Ocean Prime Young Leaders Program, I was named executive chef in 2020 when Jagger took on the general manager role. Which of your menu items need to be on our culinary bucket list? We are really proud to source our meat from Michael’s Finer Meats & Seafoods in Columbus, Ohio. You can taste the quality in all of our meats as a result, especially the prime rib-eye bone-in 24-ounce steak, which we wet age for 31 days. Also, I am a big risotto guy, so if a dish is accompanied by one of my risottos, you are in for a treat! Any foods you personally don’t like? While I was trained to never limit myself when it comes to food and to try it all, I do not know how people eat raw olives or dried fruit of any kind. Not for me, not even as a garnish. What would readers be surprised to know about you? I once spent 10 days in a burn trauma center (thank you, healthcare workers and first responders!). Though fine now, while cooking on a flattop during a charity event in 2010, a butane canister malfunctioned and exploded, causing a fire more or less all over my upper body. Ocean Prime, 5455 E. ALL Q’UED UP Where to indulge in the Valley’s best barbeque
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Little Miss BBQ
Arguably Arizona’s most lauded restaurant in this genre, Little Miss BBQ was born out of the owners’ love of Central Texas-style barbeque. Named the top spot in Arizona for barbeque by the Food Network and often with a line around the block at the original University Drive location (there’s a newer second location in the Sunnyslope neighborhood), people come from across the country to sample the husband-wife duo’s sliced brisket, chopped brisket, pork spareribs, pulled pork, turkey breast and housemade sausage. On Thursday, lines get even longer as that is the one day a week when the menu features pastrami. The weekend also sees sizeable crowds as beef short ribs are available until they sell out on Friday and Saturday only. www.littlemissbbq.com.
Starlite BBQ
From the team behind the lauded Ocotillo restaurant as well as Chantico and Sidecar Cocktail Lounge, Starlite BBQ is focused on options. The chef smokes, grills and infuses all types of different flavors into his ever rotating menu of meats, including a combination of all four of the main types of American barbeque – Memphis, Texas, Kansas City and Carolina – as he sees fit. The kitchen team also takes great pride in using locally sourced ingredients from Creekstone Farms and incorporates Southwestern flavors by using two of Arizona’s most bountiful crops – mesquite and pecan – to smoke the dishes. www.starlitebbq.com.
Joe’s Real BBQ
An Arizona icon, Joe’s Real BBQ has been known to take things slow – literally. Since opening in 1998, the family-owned business has exclusively used Arizona pecan wood on the grill without any gas or electricity, slow-cooking a variety of meats to ensure the maximum juiciness. Among the most mouthwatering of menu items are the sliced brisket, pit ham, pulled pork and hot link sausage. Diners of the Gilbert legend definitely don’t want to miss out on the 12-plus comfort food sides, especially the braised greens, fresh cut corn and potato salad. www.joesrealbbq.com.
Liberty Station American Tavern and Smokehouse The undisputed king of summer cuisine is clearly barbeque. From smoky and savory to sweet and succulent, here are the top spots in the Valley for fall-offthe-bone, stick-to-your-ribs, grilled-to-perfection, flame-cooked eats.
The secret to Liberty’s success? That would be “Big Poppy,” which is the nickname for the 1,000-gallon, custom-made on-site smoker that uses a variety of woods, including oak and pecan, to elicit the most enticing of aromas and flavors in every bite. All summer long, the smoker is firing up a series of specialty items, notably Texas-style, coffee-infused brisket; Carolina-style pork shoulder with a thick, tangy and subtly sweet Southern sauce; St. Louis spareribs with an authentic Kansas City recipe barbecue sauce; and a combination platter with samples of all three. www.libertystationtavern.com.

of Scottsdale foodies as the owner of Black Mountain Barbecue. Taking inspiration from both his fine dining days as well as down-home cooking with his family, Dooley – who uses pecan wood – smokes out competitors with no-frills, flavor-packed food that would rival any Michelin-starred restaurant. Of particular note are his whole barbeque chicken, black-eyed brisket chili, pulled pork sandwich and whole slab of pork ribs. www.bryansbarbecue.com.
Jalapeño Buck’s
The owners of this funky spot in Mesa describe their menu as new wave Mexican soul food and buzzsaw brand barbeque that is wholly Arizonan. To them, that means smoking meat in an orange grove using oak and pecan wood with just salt and pepper to taste. The 24-hour pork shoulder is hand-pulled; the ribs literally fall off the bone; the sandwiches have a heaping helping of a mayonnaise-based sauce first made by the owner’s mother; the meat can be made into a burrito with ease; and the people are as real as they are warm and welcoming. www.jalapenobucks.com.
Lovecraft
Wes Hansen, Pork on a Fork serves slowsmoked barbeque favorites for those who prefer a more fast-casual dining experience. The restaurant first made a name for itself after impressing the Food Network’s Guy Fieri, who used some of their pork products in demonstrations during the televised, national Celebrity Food Show several years back. In the years since, Pork on a Fork has also been featured on Cooking Channel’s Big Bad BBQ Crawl and was named among the best barbeque spots in town by USA Today. www.porkonafork.com.
Though initially opened as more of a craft beer bar with tapas, the New Mexico-native owner soon fell in love with the concept of combining barbeque favorites with the rich, spicy flavors of her home state. Today, Lovecraft offers a full menu of meats by the pound including 12-hour smoked prime rib, pork shoulder and pulled chicken breast that has been smoked on the bone as well as starters and entrees featuring house-smoked bacon, smoked pork combined with spicy red or green chili sauces, and even barbequed takes on jackfruit and mushrooms so vegetarian and vegan guests can get in on the fun as well. www.lovecraftphx.com.
Trapp Haus BBQ
New York native and pit master Phil Johnson, also known as “Phil the Grill,” opened Trapp Haus in Phoenix in 2018 after participating in the ultra-competitive Kansas City Barbecue Society circuit and running a local food truck. Johnson not only won the grand championship on the Sam’s Club Tour for his cooking but also placed second in its invitation-only American Royal World Series of Barbecue. He is known for shying away from mesquite in his cooking and always glazing his meats using his own rubs and sauces, and some of his specialties include brisket, pulled pork and combination platters. He also delights in dreaming up more innovative barbeque-themed fare, including his Brisket Mac Roll, a smoked eggroll with barbeque shrimp. www.trapphausbbq.com.

A DELICIOUS TRIBUTE The Italian Daughter opens in homage to a local icon
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTOS COURTESY OF MAGGIORE GROUP
Before passing earlier this year, local culinary legend Tomaso Maggiore, who was an integral part of the Valley food scene since the 1970s, imparted several lessons on his children. “Chief among those lessons was that the best meals are not just about the food on the plates and drinks in the glasses,” says Melissa Maggiore, Tomaso’s daughter. “They are, in fact, a combination of food, drink, ambiance and the people both around the table and those hosting the experience.” That lesson permeates every aspect of Maggiore’s newly opened eatery, named The Italian Daughter Cucina + Cocktails. “This Italian daughter is also an Italian mother, and given my own daughter is working with me in the restaurant, this space truly brings life full circle for our family,” says Maggiore, whose family also leads Tomaso’s, Hash Kitchen, Sicilian Butcher, Sicilian Baker and the soon-to-debut Mexicano. The 5,000-square-foot concept boasts a corner stage with a piano where every Tuesday and Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. acclaimed performer Guy Pennachio

croons hits from the likes of Frank Sinatra and Billy Joel. Other nights, local musicians entertain the crowd with classic songs from the Rat Pack era and beyond. Opposite the stage is a chic, wraparound bar that offers an impressive selection of Italian wine, beer and cocktails, including a gelato-infused martini. Notably, there is a section of the menu with a personal note from Maggiore, sharing her family’s immigrant story and offering recommendations for wine by the bottle and glass from her father’s native Sicily. The Italian Daughter also offers more standard California, New Zealand and Oregon wines, domestic beers and cocktails ranging from margaritas to Manhattans. “Our food menu boasts some of my father’s signature dishes, including his braised veal osso bucco and eggplant torte, as well as family favorites and wholly new recipes,” says Maggiore, noting early standouts include the slow braised short rib ($26); chicken and sausage scarpariello with bechamel ($28); and spaghetti picchiu pacchiu ($18), a dish where 100% of proceeds are donated to the new Tomaso Maggiore Culinary Arts Foundation to help fund scholarships for culinary arts students. Happy hour is offered in the lounge and bar area seven days a week from 3 to 7 p.m. and features $2 off all stone-fired pizzas and premium Italian cocktails as well as $7 house wines, $5 beers and a tapas-style menu of shareable bites. There is also a “bottle and board” offering ($28) during happy hour which includes a board with meatballs and creamy polenta and the guest’s choice of select bottles of wine. The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 3 to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 3 to 11 p.m., with plans to launch weekend brunch soon. The Italian Daughter Cucina + Cocktails, 23655 N.
