Contents This summer is already proving to be much different than summer 2020, and that’s great news. While the temperatures are just as hot (and we’re just getting started!) and people are still clinging to AC, they’re also going on vacation, dining out at restaurants and enjoying the many activities around town. If still staying close to home this summer, we’ve got desert dwellers covered with ways to stay cool this month. Those who enjoy a good road trip should consider a quick trip north (page 65). There’s plenty to see, do and eat in cooler climes just a one- or two-hour drive away. Cool off from the inside out thanks to local bars and restaurants serving up icy cocktails (page 96), and delicious homemade ice cream by Valley icon Sweet Republic (page 97). As usual, the local resorts and shopping centers have created programming geared toward locals and visitors alike, including soothing spa services (page 58), a program to promote joy (page 55), pool day passes and events, a surprising pop-up dining series, and themed splashpad events for the kiddos (pages 56-57). Looking to feel like you’re on vacation without getting on a plane? Visit one of the many themed venues around town (page 60) or make a reservation for your taste buds to visit the surrounding areas of the Mediterranean Sea via delicious local menu items (page 100). If planning a trip out of town, we’ve got the scoop on some luxe accommodations and programs, including Carmel (page 94) and the Waldorf Astoria Jet Program (page 90). Last but not least, flip to page 36 to meet Aisha Marshall and Des Dickerson, co-founders of Creative Label and seen on our cover. By the end of the article, it’ll be clear as to why we’re calling the pair “the dream team” as they band together to support brands and create change in the community. Whether you’re headed out of town or staying right here, stay cool!

Abby Murtagh is directing the ultimate dance in the desert at the recently reopened Arizona Biltmore Abby Murtagh believes that true leadership is the ability to seamlessly direct a team to the performance of their lives, and then to do it again the next day, but even better. “My parents were the first directors in my life, running a 36-acre farm outside of York in Pennsylvania,” Murtagh says. “The
farm was a dance of sorts, and everyone had their parts, from feeding the pigs to milking the cows to cleaning the stalls.” Murtagh’s position of choice was making lunch. “I was always the first to volunteer for the jobs inside that had creature comforts while being a nice distance from the actual creatures.”

Pulse UP CLOSE Learning the Biz The business-minded Murtagh soon realized the lack of supply and surplus of demand for cooking in the town, so she opened a catering service at just 14. Within a few months, she was catering teacher luncheons and hosting tastings in her home. She also worked as a busser in a local tavern once old enough, solidifying her love for hospitality. “To take my love for this people-pleasing dance to the next level, I decided to pursue a college degree in the industry, setting my sights high,” Murtagh says. “I made a portfolio with sample menus, profit-and-loss statements and even comment cards and used it to apply to Cornell University, where I was accepted and graduated in 1992.” Her first job was a doozy. “It was as the restaurant manager on the Spirit of Philadelphia, a ship that takes passengers along the Delaware River. Five stars, it was not,” Murtagh says. It was at this first job that Murtagh learned a big lesson about leadership. “Most of our staff was on parole. It was a rough crowd but finding a way to listen to their needs and get along with them taught me that in order to lead anyone, I had to speak their language, not the other way around,” Murtagh says. After successfully avoiding being thrown overboard for a year, Murtagh moved on to Hotel Hershey in Pennsylvania and then Hershey Lodge and Convention Center. “After a few years, I learned another big lesson. If I wanted to continue moving up the ranks in the industry, I needed to get out of my comfort zone and be open to moving, even cross-country,” says Murtagh, who first moved to Washington D.C. and then San Francisco, making a name for herself with several brands, including Kimpton.
The Road to GM As her career progressed, and as she became more adept at learning and speaking the many languages of team members, Murtagh doubled down her commitment to moving as needed, taking a leadership role at a management company that required regular travel to hotels and resorts nationwide. “Somehow, between moves, I also found love. And I found it more or less next door,” says Murtagh, who met her now-husband Tony in the early 2000s while doing rideshare in Virginia to cut down on the often horrendous commute to work. The two married in 2004 and made a home in Florida. By 2006, the couple welcomed their son, Patrick, and their daughter, Caroline. “I was actually taking time off to care for the kids when I got a call with a life-changing proposition. I was being recruited to be the food and beverage director at the Hilton Waikoloa Village, which would mean moving the family 7,000 miles away but would also mean leading a $30 million operation, which felt like the ultimate challenge,” Murtagh says. The family loved the Big Island, especially Murtagh, whose commute consisted of jetting down the side of a mountain for 10 minutes in a Jeep with no doors. Soon, however, they sought a means to move back to the mainland.

So Scottsdale! July ‘21
“The opportunity to come back came in 2012 thanks to the New York Palace, which was undergoing a massive renovation,” Murtagh says. She took a job leading the culinary team and moved her family to New Jersey, effectively adding three hours to her Hawaiian commute. All those hours in the car paid off quickly. After three years, the one-and-only Waldorf Astoria in New York came calling with a lofty management position, which she took and excelled in in short order. By 2015, there was only one role Murtagh had yet to earn: general manager. “The general manager of a resort is the true director and choreographer of all operations on any property,” Murtagh says. “In 2016, I got my first opportunity at the role via the Hilton Salt Lake City, a position I took sight unseen.” She remained at the resort for several years, including through COVID-19, which – outside of working with the parolees – was the hardest time in her career. By the end of 2020, she began talks with Arizona Biltmore. “The entire industry has been buzzing about the Biltmore and its multimillion-dollar renovation for a year,” Murtagh says. “The responsibility was great, but one I worked toward my entire life.” In May, as general manager, Murtagh led the reopening of the iconic property after a 15-month property-wide transformation. “Originally opened in 1929 and beloved for its Frank Lloyd Wright and Albert Chase McArthur design, our team worked meticulously with Wright devotees to respectfully restore, repair and ultimately celebrate the resort’s storied legacy while elevating the guest experience for visitors from around the world,” Murtagh says. “I think what we’ve created here is the greatest production of my life.”

PAD Impacts Everyday Living BY GREER BANKS
he need to stop and rest after walking a short distance because of a leg cramps, numbness in the feet or leg pain could be more than normal aging or adjusting to increased activity. While the inclination may be to think it’s just part of getting older, these symptoms may be caused by vascular insufficiency. Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is one of those conditions that is sometimes easy to dismiss. “If you find yourself needing to rest because your leg cramps when you walk even a short distance, or at night you need to stand up to relieve a cramp in your foot, that’s your legs and feet telling you they need help,” says Dr. Joel Rainwater, chief medical officer of Comprehensive Integrated Care (CiC). “PAD is often called the silent killer because you may have it and not even know,” says Rainwater. Its diagnosis is often delayed and not identified until it has progressed. “It’s not normal to have difficulty walking to your mailbox, it’s not normal to have constant leg pain or cramping,” says Rainwater.
It’s also interesting to note, that the symptoms of PAD and neuropathy are very similar. They include difficulty walking without taking a break, burning, tingling, numbness and/or pain. “When I see a patient who has been told they have neu-
“PAD is often called the silent killer because you may have it and not even know it” ropathy and they’ve been maximized on medication that’s not working, I know there may be something else causing it and one of the big, notorious offenders in that scenario is PAD,” says Rainwater. PAD is caused by the buildup of fatty material inside the arteries. This build-up occurs gradually and hardens into plaque inside the artery restricting blood flow. Without an adequate blood supply, the body can’t get the oxygen and nutrients it needs to maintain healthy legs and feet.
“This is something we can fix,” explains Rainwater. “The good news about PAD, is that there’s hope. There is treatment and it’s excellent, it’s been one of the biggest success stories in all of medicine.” Patients are able to get back on their feet and everyday living with almost no downtime, no stitches and no overnight hospital stay. Medicare as well as most insurance plans will cover treatment. “I’m here to tell patients that there are options, all they have to do is ask. They might have to ask a different doctor, but they don’t have to live with the idea that they’re going to suffer for the rest of their life,” says Rainwater. His best advice, “Go look for answers.”
Joel Rainwater, MD is a board-certified endovascular specialist with more than 23 years of experience. He has focused his medical career on educating the public and his fellow physicians to recognize PAD and start treatment as quickly as possible. He can be reached at 480-860-6455.

Celia Waddington and Kim Gouch team up to develop a mixology subscription box
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
When Celia Waddington and Kim Gouch met at a local advertising agency in 2001, it was love at first bite (and sip). “We became fast friends thanks to our shared love of all things food and drink,” says Waddington, who worked on the creative side of the business while Gouch was on the client-facing side. After a year, and several Cadillac margaritas at Chevy’s downtown, the two left the firm to consult as a team, primarily focused on hospitality brands ranging from Marriott to Diageo, one of the world's largest spirit producers. The team’s reputation for imaginative menu design and forward-thinking brand strategy spread in the industry, earning them national and global clients, so much so in 2010 they formalized their partnership with the launch of their own creative services company. “In 2020 as COVID-19 hit, we found many of our bar and restaurant partners were at a loss for how to drive revenue,” Gouch says. “With laws on to-go beverages different state to state, we started bundling bottled spirits with cocktail recipes, tutorials and garnishes to help clients as well as consumers stuck at home.” Inspired, the business partners soon formed the idea to do their own bundle of sorts, melding over 20 years of experience with their irreverent personalities and favorite recipes. “Mixology is a science, which can be intimidating,” Waddington says. “So, we set out to develop a product that could turn the science into more of an easy-tofollow and very sippable art project.” In April 2021, Box on the Rocks was born. The retro-themed, colorful monthly subscription box features three different cocktail recipes – one traditional recipe, one unique idea and one mocktail – and all the ingredients to make over 10 drinks. It also offers recommendations on which spirits to purchase for optimal results and a link to video tutorials of each drink being made. “Each month, we also include one new bar tool, so subscribers can build their collection of professional mixology instruments from jiggers and shakers to stirring spoons and muddlers,” Gouch says. Subscriptions start at $40 a month, and the July box theme is the amaretto sour. This fall, they will also launch experiential products, including a s’mores and bourbon bundle and a wine tasting-themed offering. For more information, visit www.boxonthe.rocks.

POSITIVE PODCASTING
Jessica Leila Adnani and Kendal Macumber help nonprofits spread their mission and increase donor reach BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY CLAUDIA JOHNSTONE
Podcasts are having their moment and the appeal of the media format is as strong as ever. Jessica Leila Adnani and Kendal Macumber, owners of Personalized Solutions, wanted to celebrate a decade in business in a unique way which led to their Philanthropy United podcast (www.philanthropyunited.com), a production that spotlights the work of nonprofits nationwide. After connecting at a networking event in Scottsdale, Adnani and Macumber knew they were meant to become a dream team for their future clients. “The balance of mindsets we have on our team really leads us to astounding results,” Macumber says. “We are so passionate about what we do.” When they’re not crafting digital strategies and creative events, the women behind the boutique consulting firm aim to spread positivity to the community by giving nonprofits a voice to tell their impactful stories and expand their network of donors. “As a team we are motivated by knowing that the work we do for our clients helps them execute their mission and those missions are life-changing to so many,” Adnani says. With 24 episodes under their belt, the upcoming season of Philanthropy United – launching Sept. 1 – is geared up to be the most impactful yet. New episodes launch live every Wednesday on all podcast platforms, including Spotify, iTunes, Pandora, Audible, Amazon Music, and YouTube. “The vision is so much bigger than us, so much bigger than making money, it’s about making our world a better place to be,” Macumber says. Past featured local philanthropies include The Baller Dream Foundation, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Arizona, and Amanda Hope Rainbow Angels, among others. “Even if each nonprofit gets one new donor from the episode, it was well worth it,” Adnani says. Adnani and Macumber are constantly open to learning about nonprofits that may benefit from appearing on their show and encourage their listeners to submit suggestions. “We bring a lot of energy to our work and we are constantly looking for ways to improve, learn and adapt,” Adani says. “The world is moving faster than ever and we know what worked last year, might not work this year.”

CASUALLY CONFIDENT Wayne Goshkarian maintains a laid-back style that stands the test of time BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Wayne Goshkarian, president of Dylan Consulting, LLC, sports a classy, refined and confident style. With a clean and comfortable fashion sense inspired by no one but himself, Goshkarian prefers to create his own looks rather than follow in the footsteps of others. “I enjoy planning outfits that coordinate with my significant other. I ask my girlfriend what we are going to wear so we complement one another,” he says. During the height of the pandemic, Goshkarian spent most of his time in his favorite athleisure brand, Lululemon. Now, much of his workday is spent in his office at the Scottsdale Airport – a location that’s convenient as Goshkarian has had his pilot’s license for a few decades – where the dress code is very low-key. “When I travel, I like Vineyard Vines. When I am out, I wear Brunello Cucinelli from Neiman Marcus,” he says. With in-person events starting to take place once again, Goshkarian looks forward to dusting off his black-tie looks to attend nonprofit events but remains loyal to his love of activewear. “My must-have item is quality sportswear because it’s simple, easy and conformable,” he says.
What is your most prized possession? I love aviation and my most prized possessions reflect that including a chronograph watch, also known as a pilot’s watch, that my dad gave me when I was 18. These watches feature a stopwatch that pilots used for precise timing and to make quick calculations. What are your favorite colors and patterns? I’ll wear a variety of styles like stripes or plaid and alternate to bold solid colors for a classic look. How does your career influence your style? I fly all over the U.S. to meet with clients, so I dress for the occasion. If I have a meeting in Boise, Idaho, I’ll wear jeans to be more causal. When I’m in New York City, I’ll change into my suit to coordinate with my client’s higher-end style.

Pulse HER STYLE
FASHIONABLE FROM WITHIN Creating stunning looks is second nature for photographer Shelley Wolfe Franklin
BY MANDY HOLMES / PHOTO BY BEVERLY SHUMWAY
Award-winning fine art portrait photographer Shelley Wolfe Franklin rocks a bold style behind the lens. “My style is definitely feminine but never girly,” she says. Due to the nature of her career, Franklin moves around a lot, making comfort a top priority for her wardrobe. To achieve this goal while still creating a polished look, Franklin often throws on a blazer over Commando leggings and a T-shirt. In the evening, Franklin’s ensembles still carry a feminine vibe with an edgy flair. She incorporates leather or faux leather for their alluring appeal and always chooses a dress over a skirt. “For dresses, nothing beats the way Retrofete fits the curves of a woman’s body,” she says. Though Franklin once turned to others for style inspiration, she now looks inward and trusts her instincts when deciding what to wear. “As I near 50 years old I’m happy to say I don’t feel influenced by anyone else’s style, which hasn’t always been the case,” Franklin says. “Now I wear what I feel good in and choose my clothing based upon my own daily activities and current mood.”
What are your favorite colors to wear? Currently I’m loving pops of color. Anything blush looks great with my hair color and I really enjoy wearing jewel tones. Has the pandemic affected your style at all? It did for almost a year. I think I went a full year without wearing heels! My feet were not prepared for the shock of them after that, but in spite of the initial blisters, I love to wear heels even though they make me well over 6 feet tall. How do you transition your look from day to night? My go-to items are simple, knee-length Michael Stars dresses. They are fitted but forgiving with a bit of ruching on the sides. They look great with flats for work, but I can throw a heel on and accessorize to go out and are just formfitted enough they look professional but a little bit sultry!

THE DRE AM TE AM Aisha Marshall and Des Dickerson, co-founders of Creative Label, are on a mission to support brands and educate the community
The story of how the masterminds behind digital consulting agency Creative Label met has been told to death – with plenty of additions and revisions on both sides. The setting: a lecture hall at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. The characters: Des Dickerson, a bored college student with dreams of becoming a reporter, and Aisha Marshall, a recent transfer to ASU, who, as Dickerson jokingly (and lovingly) says, was friendless and a little bit nosy.
“For Black people – and I’m sure it’s true for every other minority – you walk into a room in higher education and are usually the only Black person,” Marshall says. “But anytime there was another Black person in class, I would sit next to them. I didn’t know them, but it felt like we were the same in a room of people who didn’t look like us.” So, in one of her classes at ASU, Marshall gravitated to the only other Black woman in the lecture hall. “She was always on her computer. We’d been in class for a few weeks, and occasionally I’d look over So Scottsdale! July ‘21

and think, ‘Oh, this girl’s on Facebook again,’” says Marshall, who realized one day that she recognized one of the photo albums the woman was scrolling through. “It was a costume party of me and my friends at San Francisco State, which I attended before transferring to ASU. I was dressed as a giraffe, so it was easily recognizable. So I asked, ‘Hey, how do you know them?’ And she looked at me like, ‘What are you doing on my computer?’” “Anytime Aisha tells the story, take the exaggeration back three steps,” Dickerson says. “From my perspective, I literally thought she was stalking me! Why was this girl being so nosy?” But Dickerson, who went to high school in California with the people in the photos – and felt she needed to be welcoming to the transfer student who didn’t know anyone at her new school – invited Marshall to a party she was throwing that night, and the rest is history. “It sounds cliche, but we were inseparable after that,” Dickerson says. “We meshed right away – I don’t remember that she ever went home.”
FINDING FULFILLMENT After graduation, Marshall and Dickerson pursued separate career paths. After a college internship with the Dr. Phil show, Dickerson began a stint in TV production, eventually working as an associate producer for multiple shows on HGTV and Lifetime. Marshall, on the other hand, decided to pursue a Juris Doctor. “Law school really helped my stamina and taught me how to be both right and left brain,” Marshall says. “But I realized that while I enjoyed it, it wasn’t a passion of mine. It became a battle between being good at something and doing something that fills your cup.” Dickerson, exhausted from her career in production, found herself in a similar position. “Aisha was feeling unfulfilled in her legal life, not knowing what to do but knowing she wanted to be in the creative space, and I really wanted to own something of my own. If I’m going to work 90 hours a week, I would rather work for myself than somebody else.” This thought led to the formation of a small business on Etsy, selling custom Snapchat geofilters for events like baby

showers and weddings. They handled every aspect for their customers, from designing the filter to getting it live, making little to no profit while they both balanced demanding work schedules and, in Marshall’s case, law school. From monitoring the exponential growth of the social media industry, they knew that custom experiences like the one they provided were here to stay. When Marshall graduated from ASU’s Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law, the pair expanded their business model to include social media management and haven’t looked back. Over nearly five years, Creative Label (www.itscreativelabel.com) has evolved into a full-service digital consulting agency specializing in branding, public relations and marketing. The Creative Label team prioritizes problem-solving, accountability and over-communication to create compelling original content that brings each client’s dream to life.
EXPERIENCE IS THE BEST TEACHER Today, Dickerson helms Creative Label as the vice president of public relations and digital marketing alongside Marshall, the vice president of branding and digital marketing. While Marshall’s legal background helps the team bridge the gap between idea and execution, Dickerson’s production experience, especially at CBS, prepared her to build strong relationships with clients and partners. “It made me unafraid to go after things for fear of being told no,” she says. “If they do, it doesn’t mean no forever, it just means not right now. We’d heard no for a long time, but it’s never stopped us from constantly going after everything we want.” And it’s this propensity to dream big that helped Marshall and Dickerson earn one of their biggest achievements to date – a spot on the Forbes 30
Under 30 list. But the journey hasn’t all been smooth sailing. “When we first started, people were super stingy with information,” Dickerson says. “We had to do a lot of research and a lot of teaching ourselves. Because of that, we made a commitment to always give back and educate our community.” One way they make good on their promise is through their podcast, The Label. Each weekly episode provides updates on the world of digital media, from recent news to expert advice on everything from Instagram stories and multilevel marketing to creating clear, concise and consistent branding. “Our mission has always been to give value. Des and I ascribe to an abundance philosophy, that you get what you give. For us, it has poured back into us tenfold,” Marshall says. “And people love our banter, but this is not just a show, it’s every day between the two of us.” Marshall and Dickerson’s podcast also serves as a safe space for their predominantly white audience and clientele to ask questions about how to support others in a time when people are opening their eyes to a variety of injustices and microaggressions. Past discussions include how to be an ally in the workplace, how to support creatives of color and how to frame your message as a white person wanting to help the Black community. “We talk in length about how companies can show up and take action, as well as what kind of diversity efforts they should be running,” Marshall says. “Inclusivity does bring more money into your business, but it’s not just to check a box off – it’s to be more representative of the world.” At the end of the day, Creative Label is more than just a company – it’s a testament to the power of tireless work, communication and a friendship that will always triumph over any obstacles in its path. “I’ve never had a relationship like I have with Des,” Marshall says. “We’re like sisters – we’ve had toxic habits, fought tooth and nail and then gone to our favorite lunch place five minutes later. It took a lot of time and hard conversations to get to where we are today, but there’s always going to be hard conversations – that’s part of growing. If you throw it away every time, you’ll never become your best self.” So Scottsdale! July ‘21

Dr. Alexandra Mayer is a Naturopathic Physician with a specialty in Medical Aesthetics and Women’s Hormones. Her love for healthy, glowing skin and all things aesthetics stem from her personal experiences growing up. She draws inspiration from her aunt, who owned a high-end spa based in Canada and showed her how to best care for her skin. In 2014, Dr. Mayer received her Naturopathic Medical Degree from the Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine. She co-founded Ethos Integrative Medicine in 2015 to bring patients quality, integrative care that balances immediate improvement with long term results, and gets patients feeling great in their skin and great in their overall health. The best treatment plan is tailored to help her patients achieve their aesthetic goals while getting their hormones balanced and energy back so they can “confidently perform well at work, meet their personal goals, and level up in their life!” With her “skin-first approach” in mind, she provides treatments for skin laxity, wrinkles, acne, hyperpigmentation, rosacea, and hair loss. Botox injections are a popular treatment for patients looking to erase fine lines, correct undesirable facial movement, and achieve smooth skin. Dr. Mayer understands that a little goes a long way, so she strives to maintain the face’s natural movement.
For patients looking to lift, tone, and tackle the core of aging, RF Microneedling is a great option! Dr. Mayer calls it the ultimate skin-tightening treatment that boosts collagen and elastin production and targets skin laxity, deep wrinkles, and unwanted scarring: “Our patients LOVE it because there’s virtually zero downtime and it results in brighter, tighter, and firmer skin.” A treatment would not be complete without a solid skincare regimen to maintain that rejuvenated, natural glow. This year, Dr. Mayer launched her own exclusive Ethos Skincare line: “My patients know that I’m the pickiest person when it comes to skincare, so they trust me to curate quality products that get them lasting results.” The line’s HA Mineral Defense sunscreen continues to sell out as soon as it’s restocked! If you’re looking for a fantastic lightweight sunscreen that’ll protect the skin from the Arizona summer sun, you can stop by Ethos to pick one up. As cheesy as it may sound, Dr. Mayer says that her patients inspire her to keep striving in what she does as a doctor and businesswoman: “I love that I have so many badass female patients who run their own businesses and show up as their authentic selves.” Her passion for helping patients inspired her to launch her own YouTube Channel: Dr. Alexandra Mayer. Her goal is to educate women on health, hormones, and aesthetics, and empower them to be their best selves. Contact at www.ethosscottsdale.com or 480.360.0115, 7054 E. UGLOW
Krista Kutac specializes in delivering dramatic results After opening 31 medspas (and overseeing nearly 100) in the last 16 years, across the country for national companies, Krista Kutac took the plunge and opened her own luxury medspa, UGlow, in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale. “We’re proud to be a local, women-owned and operated business!” she says. With over 16 years of experience in the aesthetics industry, Kutac is proud to provide unique treatments that deliver glowing results that no other practice in Scottsdale can match. Clients visit UGlow with a wide range of skin concerns. Many are interested in anti-aging technology and permanent fat loss or body contouring. Kutac and her team offer exclusive treatments that deliver dramatic, youthful results for patients of every skin type and nearly every skin concern. Different than many med spas in Arizona, UGlow offers medical grade PRP (Platelet-Rich-Plasma) treatments. Unlike test tube PRP, which often has a platelet count too low to provide significant results, medical grade PRP has a higher platelet count which regenerates tissue, increases collagen production, and increases cell turnover. The regenerative properties in PRP make it a naturally, highly effective treatment to reverse the signs of aging and as well as stimulate hair growth. UGlow has also recently been recognized as a Center of Excellence by InMode, a leading provider of innovative and award winning technologies, UGlow is the only facility to achieve such recognition in Arizona.
UGlow recently added stem cell hair restoration (for both men and women) as well as Morpheus8 radio-frequency microneedling. Their other services include laser resurfacing, Botox, fillers, non-surgical facelifts, custom infusion facials and chemical peels. In the near future, UGlow will offer a uniquely advanced awake-liposuction procedure to permanently get rid of unwanted fat and performed by a board-certified surgeon. According to Kutac, experience was the best teacher she could ask for. “It taught me what people truly want as well as which technologies work and which don’t,” she says. To remain a leading med spa, Kutac only invests in the most cutting-edge technology and highest quality equipment. As a small business owner, she is passionate about entrepreneurship and carving out her own path in life. Opening medspas for large companies across the country meant more time travelling and less time with family. During the pandemic, she realized just how much the road warrior life was taking her away from her children. So, she and her business partner opened UGlow with one focus: providing real results for real people. Establishing her own practice also allows her to spend more time with her two children and dedicate time to some of her favorite charities including Child Help, a non-profit organization dedicated to preventing and treating child abuse. N. SCOTTSDALE LASER & SKIN Treating skin is our specialty
For Briggette DeRienzo, providing premium aesthetic treatments is a family affair. De Rienzo is the owner of North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care, a full service medspa offering a wide range of services including Botox, fillers, facials, Coolsculpting, laser treatments, and more. With an emphasis on creating incredible skin, De Rienzo settles for nothing short of the best medical grade skin care, such as SkinMedica and ZO by Zein Obagi. One of the things that sets North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care apart is the team’s understanding of how the Covid19 Pandemic has negatively impacted many people’s self-image. “Everyone is so much more aware of how they look thanks to Zoom calls,” De Rienzo says. De Rienzo has always valued patient input, and shares that “We’re in the business of making people feel more confident in their own skin and want to give that feeling to as many people as possible!” Besides the variety of treatment options, DeRienzo believes that her customer service sets her brand apart. She wants every client to feel like part of the North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care Clinic family and calling it a family isn’t figurative. DeRienzo’s daughter, Nicole, is a licensed medical aesthetician and laser technician and serves as the clinic’s in-home Coolsculpting expert. Not only is she her mother’s right hand, but she also keeps the practice up to date with innovative, fresh ideas and a new perspective. DeRienzo considers the rest of the team at North Scottsdale
Laser and Skin Care her family as well. With their Medical Director Dr. Jessica Anderson, Naturopathic injectors Dr. Robert Ruiz and Dr. Sandra Olic, 1 doctor that specializes in hormones and the rest of the team, DeRienzo has herself an unstoppable team with over 150 years of combined experience. For more than a dozen years, North Scottsdale Laser and Skin Care has evolved based on client feedback, emerging technology and special training for staff members. In 2021, the clinic is focusing on additional body sculpting services with a brand new Coolsculpting Elite machine. DeRienzo remains dedicated to her community with close ties to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Twice a year, she facilitates a clothing and canned food drive and offers discounted pricing on Botox for patients who donate food or clothes to St. Vincent de Paul. All of DeRienzo’s hard work has paid off and she has been at the helm of getting the clinic recognized as an Allergen Top 250 Volume Customer in the United States. In the near future, DeRienzo looks forward to some in-office renovations (patients aren’t the only ones refreshing their Zoom Face), and finally in-person events again. CUTTING EDGE AESTHETICS Nicolle Goyle focuses on making clients feel their best
Nicolle Goyle discovered her passion for aesthetic services early on and became a licensed cosmetologist in 2007. After working alongside her mom at her family’s salon for more than 9 years, Goyle pivoted her focus and now specializes in regenerative aesthetics and permanent makeup while simultaneously holding certifications in PRP microneedling and hydrafacials. Her husband Dr. Ashu Goyle is a double board-certified anesthesiologist and interventional pain specialist. Nicolle and her husband opened their clinic Integrated Pain, Spine, and Wellness for those seeking medical treatments, aesthetic procedures, or both under one roof. The purpose of regenerative treatments is to heal tissue and restore functions that have been lost due to aging, something the Goyle’s are passionate about. Their patients range in age and typically visit Pain, Spine, and Wellness for skin concerns and individualized plans to help them look and feel their best. “We created our Regenerative Aesthetics portion of the practice, to help men and women not only feel great but also look their best,” Nicolle says. By offering PRP (platelet-rich plasma) skincare treatments including hydrafacials, and permanent makeup including microblading, powdered brows, powdered eyeliner, and lip blush, she is able to ensure patients have an overall sense of well-being. One of the most in demand services include hydrafacials- a
monthly maintenance treatment that reduces brown spots, shrinks pores, and leaves skin bright and clean. This treatment is also great for anyone suffering with acne. Another popular service is Skin Needling with PRP thanks to the transformation it can make in the appearance of your skin. “We want people to be able to feel their best after seeing us,” Nicolle says. She and her husband consider the clinic their home away from home; and her patients are her extended family. Because patients are members of the family, Goyle and her husband are highly selective about the products they keep on hand. The duo does extensive research before bringing in products, after all, Nicolle firmly believes that “our body is our temple, and that we must nurture and nourish it.” Drawing inspiration from other entrepreneurial women, Nicole credits Marie Forleo’s NYT bestselling book Everything is Figureoutable. The book helped her realize that no goal is truly out of reach and that anything is attainable. In her spare time, Nicolle is dedicated to her food blog @nikkisgreattastes. Here she focuses on providing clean, organic, gourmet recipes that followers and patients can create in their own kitchens. In the near future, she sees herself offering free recipes to clients so they can maintain a healthy lifestyle. “Food is thy medicine,” she says. CURV BODY LOUNGE Jennifer Hall speaks your body language
Located in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale, CURV Body Lounge is an innovative body contouring center unlike anything Arizona residents have seen before. Since opening in April 2021, the team at CURV has blended European and South American techniques to create their own CURV method and at the helm is Jennifer Hall, a local entrepreneur and seasoned veteran in the cosmetic surgery industry for more than 20 years. Growing up, Jennifer was surrounded by male entrepreneurs including her brother Dr. William Hall, Infini Cosmetic Associates, a prominent valley cosmetic surgeon and always found gratification in helping people. Armed with determination and ambition, Jennifer combined her experience and expertise to create CURV Body Lounge. Here she offers treatments that focus on obtaining optimal health for anyone looking to detox their lymphatic system. “CURV is not a med spa, we are a boutique body lounge that invites clients to come in and stay awhile,” Jennifer says. Using advanced technology and techniques mastered by licensed professionals, treatments at CURV help clients achieve ideal levels of confidence and body bliss. Whether you are in the recovery stages post-surgery or are looking to decrease bloat and increase energy- the services at CURV drive out toxins and smooth, strengthen and tighten your skin. With the support of numerous surgeons in the valley, CURV was established to bridge the gap in quality post op care and recovery. Since CURV is a concierge style facility, clients receive
top tier service in a beautiful clean environment. Some clients visit CURV after surgery or pregnancy to combat swelling and some clients are simply looking to feel lighter and refreshed in their everyday life or before or after a special event or vacation. Every service at CURV encourages a healthy lymph flow through a series of specific strokes and patterns along the lymphatic system, which in turn reduces swelling and purges the body of harmful bacteria. The most popular treatment? The 60 minute Body Contouring Detox + Sculpt, a body contouring technique that stimulates your lymphatic system and drives out toxins, giving your body a chance to release lymph while cinching your waist line. Another popular option is the Pre/Post Op Lymphatic Drainage where the specialized pre and post-operative lymphatic drainage technique helps remove excess fluids, reduce scar tissue and decreases swelling. A few benefits for CURV’s post surgery patients include faster healing and regained mobility. “Seeing people that are moving slower a few days after surgery and watching them gain mobility rapidly is inspiring,” Jennifer says. She often assists and fits post op clients with their second stage garments. Typically, CURV clients visit a few times per week or month and take advantage of the multi service discounted packages offered and Jennifer recommends regular sessions to prevent the lymphatic system from becoming overloaded. ARIZONA SUNSHINE COMES WITH A WARNING: PROTECT YOUR SKIN
T
he summer days begin sooner and end later here in the Valley of the Sun, and that means it’s even more important to protect your skin. While many travel – or even move – to Arizona because of the abundant sunshine, it’s important to remember the hazards of exposure to excessive ultraviolet radiation. “While many skin cancers may be easily treatable, some like melanoma that are caused by sunburns can be deadly and there is no amount of skin damage that is safe,” says Samuel Ejadi, MD, Chief of Medical Oncology at Cancer Treatment Centers of America (CTCA), Phoenix. “Tanning occurs after the skin is damaged. Protection from skin damage caused by excessive ultraviolet radiation in sunshine that can lead to premature wrinkling and skin cancer is vital for everyone. While those with darker skin may not get a sunburn from overexposure, that does not mean their skin is not being damaged just the same as someone with fair skin.” With nearly 3.5 million cases diagnosed each year, skin cancer remains the most common cancer in the United States, and government officials estimate that one in five Americans will develop some form of skin cancer in their lifetime. The good news is that skin cancer is largely
preventable and reducing your risk of sun damage is easier than you might think. Here are some tips to help protect your skin this summer, or any time of the year: • Avoid the sun, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Don’t be fooled by cloudy days. The Skin Cancer Foundation estimates that up to 80 percent of the sun’s damaging UV rays can penetrate the clouds. • Follow the shadow rule and teach it to your kids. If your shadow is shorter than you are, the sun’s rays are at their strongest, and it’s time to seek shade. • Wear protective clothing. Tightly woven fabric that you can’t see through when you put it up to the light provide the best sun protection. Wide brim hats protect sensitive areas like the back of the neck. • Get sunglasses with UV protection that absorb up to 99 percent or 100 percent of UV rays. • Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher daily on sun exposed skin, even when you’re running errands or driving around town. This will protect skin against both UVA and UVB rays. When planning outdoor activities, be sure to apply generous amounts to
your face and body—and lip balm. And reapply throughout the day, especially after sports or water activities. • Need a reminder on when you’ve had too much sun? There are a number of wearable gadgets—from UV-measuring wristbands to smartphone apps that draw data from sun patches on your skin— that alert you when it’s time to reapply the sunscreen or get out of the sun. • Avoid tanning beds. • Examine your skin from head to toe once a month and go to the doctor if you notice any irregularities. Be sure to enlist a loved one or hairdresser to help examine those hard to see places like your scalp or behind your ears. • See your dermatologist once a year for professional full-body skin exams. Whatever you do, the key is to avoid excessive ultraviolet radiation as much as possible. Your genetics and UV light are the main factors linked to squamous cell carcinomas and melanomas of the skin, and likely the majority of basal cell carcinomas. The second stop, Grey Hen RX, is inspired by the 1800s apothecaries in New Orleans, serving hand-selected fine spirits and elevated cocktails. Though the oldest of the bunch, Undertow recently moved from its first home just next door to the Century Grand building. Known for tropical cocktails, the immersive atmosphere brings guests on a journey in the belly of a spice trader’s turn-of-the-century Clipper ship. www.centurygrandphx.com. Buffalo Chip Saloon What started as a small feed and bait shop in 1951 has since turned into a Valley institution. Located in Cave Creek and drawing both visitors and locals alike, Buffalo Chip is a quintessential Western saloon. Don your cowboy getup and head in for a truly unique, authentic experience. Highlights include live bull riding, live music, and dancing lessons. After working up an appetite, indulge in traditional barbecue meats and all the fixings one would expect. www.buffalochipsaloon.com. Hula’s Modern Tiki Travel both back in time and to a land far away with this modern twist on the classic Tiki bars of the ’50s and ’60s. The tropical design will transport diners to a luau and the menu features a fusion of island and mainland flavors. Highlights include the loco moco, a Hawaiian specialty; and a jerk pork plate, served with Jamaican Johnny cakes. Those looking to take their “vacation” a step further should head into the Uptown location of Hula’s, where The Captain’s Cabin is found. Open Thursday through Saturday starting at 6 p.m., guests are invited to step through a porthole door and explore the late-’40s Tahitian sailor’s bar serving craft cocktails. The Captain’s Cabin, along with the private themed Tiki Rooms at both Uptown and High Street locations, are available for private events. www.hulasmoderntiki.com.

Many times, artists begin their pieces with an idea of the final outcome in mind and that concept changes until the artwork has been completed. This process is much like Cece Cole’s career as an artist, which has organically transformed since she started. Cole’s interest in the arts began at a young age, thanks in part to her family’s involvement in the creative world. She was first exposed to art at her grandmother’s studio while growing up in Lafayette, Louisiana, and while exploring art museums and wineries when visiting her father in California. “I think that exposure had an impact on my decision to follow a career path in art,” she says. “I studied art in high school and then college. It was something I could do well. I enjoyed the lifestyle and the feeling that I am and always will be learning and making things. Cole went on to graduate with her bachelor’s of fine arts from University of Louisiana, where she focused on mixed media studies. After a six-year academia break, she then attended and graduated University of Iowa with her Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts. Upon graduating, she received a Fountainhead and Virginia Commonwealth fellowship, continuing on as a faculty instructor for a year after the program. Cole then went abroad for a residency and exhibition in Berlin, Germany, before relocating to New York where she traveled to Japan, Mexico, Hungary and Slovakia while working. In 2010, she moved back to her hometown in Louisiana, teaching high school students through Lafayette Public School’s Talented Art Program for four years before moving to Scottsdale. Today, Cole not only still creates art, but she is also an entrepreneur and recently became the curator at Mountain Shadows. “I describe my work as mixed media installation,” says Cole, noting she is currently developing work to show in 2022. Her companies include Cole/Lab (www.colelab.art) and Good Company Contemporary Art and Design (www.goodcompanyaz. com), formed in 2018 and 2020, respectively. “Cole/Lab provides a place to direct clients seeking an informed artist’s perspective on projects big and small,” says Cole, noting her goal in Good Company is to create a financial support system for local artists, designers, and fabricators of all backgrounds. “Good Company Art and Design is a multidisciplinary art and design studio and online directory. Our aim is to create new opportunities for local artists, designers, and fabricators through a direct funding scholarship program.” The newest addition to Cole’s resume is as the curator for The Gallery at Mountain Shadows, where her focus is on displaying contemporary art and new media by local and nonlocal emerging talent. The Gallery is updated every two months and the current exhibit, Recent Work by Matt Magee, will be on display through Aug. 1.

Cool places in Arizona to beat the heat
We are officially in the throes of summer in the desert. Starting now, the humidity is also creeping up along with the temperature as the monsoon season settles in. If seeking a way to escape the Scottsdale heat for a few days, why not consider a trip up north? Less than two hours from the Valley are dozens of cool – literally and figuratively – spots just waiting to be discovered. Here are four worth a trip now.

Many Valley residents are acquainted with Flagstaff, likely because they have visited to ski in the winter or to tour Northern Arizona University. For those whose knowledge of the cozy mountain town ends there, summer is the perfect time to set aside a weekend and visit. Smack dab in the middle of the world’s largest contiguous ponderosa pine forest, Flagstaff is at an elevation of 7,000 feet. To give perspective, the Mile High City of Denver, Colorado, is at 5,280 feet. The result: weather in the 70s and 80s during the day with chilly evenings. The climate allows for hiking, mountain biking and outdoor concerts. There is also ample fishing, camping, horseback riding and paddle boarding available on the gentle waters of nearby Lake Mary, Grand Canyon National Park, Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Wupatki National Monument, and Meteor Crater, which are all within easy driving distance. Beyond this, outdoor adventurers can ride up Snowbowl via a scenic chairlift to Arizona’s highest point on the San Francisco Peaks as well as try their hands at a sky-high obstacle course with zip lines, suspension bridges and rope swings at Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course. Those looking to wine and dine in the pines are also in luck as Flagstaff has a burgeoning culinary scene, especially in its downtown area. Among the most notable spots is Shift Kitchen & Bar. Led by award-winning chef George Murkowicz, a Scottsdale native who honed his skills at Zinc Bistro, T. Cook’s and L’Auberge de Sedona, the regularly updated menu showcases fresh vegetables and is a playful take on European and American cuisines. Similarly impressive is Brix, a perfect date night restaurant and wine bar also located in the downtown area. Its focus is to source
FLAGSTAFF
ingredients from local farmers and ranchers from the Four Corners region for contemporary American dishes. Rounding out the other biggest “must” restaurants in the area are Tinderbox Kitchen and Pizzicletta. A mainstay in the area for more than a decade, Tinderbox re-imagined its concept amid COVID-19, reemerging in recent months as a finer dining experience with elevated cocktails and wine pairings. And at Pizzicletta, people are known to wait in line for hours for what many call the best pizza in Arizona. Breweries also abound, including several within walking distance from each other such as Mother Road Brewing, Lumberyard Brewing, Historic Brewing Barrel + Bottle House, Wanderlust Brewing Company, Beaver Street Brewery and Dark Sky Brewing Co. As for accommodations, opt for Little America Hotel, which is about a mile from downtown and tucked into 500 acres of pristine Flagstaff forest with abundant hiking trails, a heated pool and multiple outdoor lounge areas and patios. The spacious hotel underwent an extensive renovation in recent years, resulting in enhanced rooms, a modern lobby and a chic restaurant and bar called Silver Pine. Referenced in the famous song Get Your Kicks on Route 66, Williams, located 40 minutes west of Flagstaff and among the most well-preserved stretches of the iconic national highway, has kicks aplenty during the summer months, especially if a lover of nature and wildlife. Though many folks spend the night in Flagstaff and make the drive to Williams for the day, the local Sheridan House Inn has such well-appointed accommodations; an overnight stay at the secluded luxury bed and breakfast is a must while in town. The inn, which is known for its fox, javelina and deer sightings, features eight rooms, each unique in its own way and named for a tree native to the region. Of particular note is the Rosewood Room, which has forest views out of every window, an LED fireplace, a lighted rain shower and both a private hot tub and a furnished pergola. All guests at the inn are treated to daily breakfast with French press coffee, hand-squeezed fruit juices and a menu curated to guests’ particular dietary needs. In the summer months, breakfast is served on the deck surrounded by greenery, almost as if in a treehouse. After breakfast, adventures abound, including private helicopter tours that fly over the Grand Canyon, which can be arranged by the innkeepers with advance notice. If preferring to stay closer to the ground while still enjoying the region’s more natural wonders, Williams is also home to the Grand Canyon Railway. Just five minutes from Sheridan House Inn, the Grand Canyon Railway, whose Williams’ depot is home to the Fred Harvey Restaurant which is notably the best restaurant in town, whisks guests to the south rim of the Grand Canyon and back daily via train. There are several types of cars on the train from which to choose, but for a more
WILLIAMS
elevated journey, opt for the luxury dome or luxury parlor, each of which has plush seating, a private bar and snacks. Along the route, passenges should keep their eyes peeled for animals ranging from elk and mountain lions to bald eagles and condors. Itching for an even grander animal encounter? Then don’t miss Bearizona in Williams. The 160-acre park allows visitors to drive their own cars through more than 3 miles of ponderosa pine forest. During the drive, guests can view North American animals in natural habitats up close and personal, including reindeer, black bears, American bison and wolves. Additional animals can be observed in habitats at Fort Bearizona, a beautiful 20-acre walking area that is home to bear cubs, bobcats, grizzly bears, otters, jaguar, elk, beavers, badgers and more. Finally, any trip to Williams should include an actual visit to Route 66, which has commemorative signage perfect for selfies as well as a host of shops and restaurants along the way, notably Miss Kitty’s Steak House, South Rims Wine & Beer Garage, Mountain Man Mercantile and Cruise’n on Route 66. Adult Disneyland, anyone? Certainly, Cottonwood – a mere 90 minutes north of Scottsdale – has amazing outdoor attractions including Dead Horse Ranch State Park, Blowout Creek and Jail Trail River Walk as well as places of historical significance, notably Tuzigoot National Monument. But the main attraction is its patio-lined Main Street. Tailormade for those who have earned a few days off from “adulting,” Main Street is home to breweries, wineries, cafes and restaurants, each a short walk from one another so neither ridehailing services nor cars are required. The perfect weekend away in Cottonwood starts with brunch on the patio at Crema Craft Kitchen & Bar. The space itself screams vacation as each table is shaded by vibrantly colored umbrellas, complementing the outrageously orange main bar made from upcycled shipping containers, and the menu is bursting with morning cocktails as well as specialties made from scratch ranging from bread pudding French toast to breakfast pot pie. Once fueled up, bar hopping may begin, starting with the newly opened Belfry WoodFired Grill & Brewery and Strada. Open since October 2020, Belfry is a working brewery with its own outdoor beer garden as well as taproom and grill, offering at least eight of its own beers at any given time as well as a lengthy list of specialty cocktails and wines. Strada, which opened in May, is an eclectic extension of the popular Pizzeria Bocce made from eight industrial-sized shipping containers. Steel beams and Edison bulbs up the ambiance, and the cocktails are updated twists on classics with locally sourced ingredients. If hungry, Strada has a menu of shareable Italian tapas and street food, many with ingredients sourced directly from Italy. From Strada, a best bet is to simply head next door to State Bar,
COTTONWOOD
which boasts beers solely made in Arizona and tons of yard games. After a day of drinks and games, a luxury stay on Main Street overnight is possible thanks to the Tavern Hotel. Nearly 100 years ago, the building where the Tavern sits was the town’s grocery store and main gathering place. Today it remains the centerpiece of the town, only now as a fully realized European-style boutique hotel with 41 rooms and suites, a fitness center and a pool pavilion. There are colorfully decorated traditional guest rooms as well as one- and two-bedroom cottages – one designed for those with dogs in tow – and even two penthouse options. After a good night’s sleep, day two in “Adult Disney” should focus on wine, as there is a lot of it on Main Street. Just some of the tasting rooms from which to choose include: Carlson Creek, known for its varietals in the style of Argentina, Chile and the Rhône Valley in southern France; Pillsbury Wine Company, which offers sustainable high elevation estate grown wines; Tantrum Wines, where all blends are made by a female winemaker; and Provisioner Wines, which has a general store in addition to the winery. In the early 1900s when Jerome was a bustling mining camp – and home to more than a dozen bordellos – the city was nicknamed the “wickedest town in the West.” Fast-forward to 2021. It is still wicked, except now it is a wicked cool love letter to Arizona’s colorful past with all the conveniences of the present. Located about 6 miles from Cottonwood and accessible via a paved road up Cleopatra Hill, Jerome is at an elevation just over 5,000 feet, offering not only cooler weather but sweeping views of the surrounding Verde Valley and Sedona Red Rocks. Several historic buildings are still standing, many of which have been modernized and refurbished to welcome guests. Among them is The Clinkscale, which was first built as a mercantile in the 1800s and gained notoriety as the first store Levi’s were sold west of the Mississippi in the 1900s. Lovingly restored and reopened in 2020 as a hotel and restaurant of the same name, the property gives a nod to the past with exposed brick, hardwood floors and brown leather and steel accents, yet it is ultramodern in its furnishings, technology and creature comforts, including flat-screen TVs, plush bedding and walk-in rainfall showers in each of the rooms. The elegant and contemporary vibe continues into the restaurant, which offers American-fusion cuisine with a French flair as well as daily brunch and regular wine pairing dinners. Like at The Clinkscale, history is on proud display throughout the city thanks to a bevy of other attractions, notably the Jerome State Historic Park, Audrey Headframe Park and the Mine Museum. Jerome State Historic Park was once a mining mogul’s mansion and yard. Today, the space is meant to take guests on a journey of Arizona’s rugged past, and there is even a 3D model of the town and its
JEROME
underground mines to help visitors of all ages visualize what life was like back then. Similarly, Audrey Headframe Park showcases what was once a massive, working mining shaft that helped gold, copper and silver make its way down the hill for transport. During its 20 years in operation, the Jerome Historical Society estimates it lifted more than 3.6 million tons of ore yielding at least 320,000 tons of copper, 190 tons of silver and 5.3 tons of gold. The Mine Museum does a fine job of tying these two landmarks to Jerome’s timeline while also accurately depicting the good, bad and ugly of the region in its heyday via saloon, gun and cultural displays and artifacts. Another way in which history comes to life in Jerome is through its wineries. While not the rough-and-tumble saloons of yesteryear, those who wish to imbibe may do so at one or more of the area’s many tasting rooms, including Cabal Cellars, Caduceus Cellars and Passion Cellars. Finally, nestled between the tasting rooms and landmarks are also dozens of specialty stores and galleries, many offering paintings, crafts and jewelry from local artisans. Permanent Make-up
& BEYOND Microblading
BEYOND MICROBLADING As a permanent make up technician and trainer for nearly 30 years I’ve seen many trends come and go. These days one of the first things I hear from people inquiring about services is “I don’t want tattooed eyebrows. I want the soft powdery look that you did for my friend.” This is when I educate the public on the truth about permanent make up and the truth is it’s all tattoo. Years ago when permanent make up was just a fledgling industry in this country many of us worked in the offices of plastic surgeons. We called the procedure micro pigment implantation. Then different techniques were marketed using trade words like soft tap, and recently microblading has been all the rage. Known as the “queen of conservative” My specialty is custom blending colors for each person. Shape, color, technique and science are what create the artistry for beautifully natural eyebrows. Eyelash enhancements. Due to the lockdown most people have lost their eyelash extensions. This is the perfect time to touch up permanent eyeliner before reapplying lashes. I love to create a rich smokey looking lash line rather than a harsh eyeliner look. Safety first. Due to the intimate nature of these procedures safety has always been at the very top of the list. Hospital grade disinfectants are used on surfaces between clients and most importantly all instruments are new, sterile and disposable. Yea! With your safety in mind I will be wearing a mask through your procedure and if you like I will happily provide you with one as well. Because my studio is completely private you need not worry about ever encountering a crowded salon environment.

2021 GENESIS GV80 The brand’s first SUV is a modern, luxurious delight BY JIM PRUETER
VITAL STATS 2021 Genesis GV80 Base price: $65,550
Genesis is the luxury car division of Hyundai that most people know very little about. Even fewer know that Genesis joined the crowded luxury SUV market this year with its first offering, the superb GV80. The new GV80 is literally a standout in a crowded sea of luxury SUVs with a striking design that’s nothing short of gorgeous. Car enthusiasts will love the unique, massive, crosschecked chrome grille simultaneously adorned with quad LED lights that flow around to the front fenders. It continues with an uninterrupted shoulder line that sweeps to the rear along with a tapering roofline and scalloped rear liftgate with LED cluster straked tail lamps matching those from the front of the vehicle. Inside, the cabin is equally impressive – Genesis refers to the design as the “Beauty of White Space,” a definite nod to the car’s sumptuous minimalism and visual cleanliness. The finely crafted cabin features a wide swathe of open pore matte finished wood, chrome metal, impeccably stitched leather, and ample amounts of heavily padded surfaces. screen sits atop the tailored dashboard. There’s a click wheel controller mounted on the center console that, while stylish, comes with a decided learning curve to operate. Most GV80 models have two rows of seats, however the Advanced+ model has a third row. It can hold up to seven people, but the third row is best left for children. Powering the GV80 is a butter smooth and impossibly quiet 3.5-liter turbocharged 375-horesepower, V6 engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS Carmel offers intimate indulgences on land and by sea
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
When it comes to Carmel, much like caramel, taking the time to enjoy two – as in two different regions that often share the same name – is better than just one. Located on California’s central coast between Monterey and Big Sur, Carmel-by-the-Sea – often just called Carmel – is the walkable seaside city littered with wine-tasting rooms, restaurants and cozy inns where Clint Eastwood once served as mayor. Carmel Valley is technically a census-designated place that lies inland from Carmel by 13 miles. Warmer and greener, Carmel Valley boasts wide open spaces, dozens of vineyards and sprawling resorts. Both are easily accessible via a two-hour flight from Phoenix, and together they represent the best of the Golden State.

So Scottsdale! July ‘21
Measuring 1 square mile, Carmel’s epicenter looks like a scene from a storybook. Many of the buildings resemble a fancier version of the dwarfs’ cottage from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, and that is no accident. A quaint yet chic escape for artists, authors and auteurs for more than 100 years, the architecture is a cross between Tudor Revival and Spanish Romantic Revival dotted with nearly two dozen actual fairy-tale-inspired cottages designed by Hugh Comstock in the 1920s. However, don’t let the old-world design fool you as Carmel is among the most luxe of vacation destinations in North America. Named among Travel + Leisure’s Top 15 Cities in the United States in 2020, there are more than 40 charming inns in and around the heart of the city, notably The Hideaway and The Getaway. Located downtown, The Hideaway features just 24 rooms and suites with gas fireplaces and cozy nooks tailor-made for romance as well as daily sunset happy hour gatherings. Just outside of the main downtown and steps from the Pacific Ocean is The Getaway, similarly small with just 34 dog-friendly rooms and suites. The boutique hotel offers ample outdoor space, bikes to explore the area and a host of amenities for guests’ four-legged friends including plush dog beds and specialty treats. Each of the city’s accommodations is smart to offer a direct path by foot to Ocean Avenue. The road is aptly named because, if taken west, it ends on the sandy white Carmel Beach. Popular for surfers, one of the coolest things to do while in town beyond hopping on a board or enjoying a quick dip is to walk, jog or ride a bike along the Scenic Bluff Path, a safe garden-lined trail along the coast that offers views of nearby Pebble Beach and Point Lobos. Ocean Avenue also leads to all of the action in the downtown square including historical and art walking tours; dozens of boutiques, antique stores and galleries along cobblestone paths; and more than 60 coffeehouses, bakeries, pubs, bistros and restaurants. Of particular note are Seventh & Dolores, a buzzy

and sophisticated fine dining option where the chefs cook fresh seafood from nearby Monterey Bay and 28-day dry-aged steaks in a glass-encased kitchen; La Bicyclette, an old-world-inspired bistro one might find in the European countryside; and Alvarado Street Brewery & Bistro, which excels at offering California coastal cuisine paired with its own brews. Beyond culinary delights, there are also nearly 20 wine-tasting rooms tucked into the downtown, including Caraccioli Cellars, Holman Ranch, Scratch Wines, Manzoni Cellars, Hahn Family Wines, Albatross Ridge, Galante Vineyards, and Silvestri Vineyards.
Carmel Valley While Carmel has the tasting rooms, Carmel Valley has the vineyards. And though just a 20-minute drive inland, Carmel Valley feels a world away from its seaside sister. In stark contrast to intimate Carmel, Carmel Valley is big and bold with mountain ranges, golf courses and riparian woodlands as far as the eye can see as well as resorts and ranches spread over several hundred acres. Quail Lodge & Golf Club, for example, is set on 895 acres in the heart of Carmel Valley and offers an 18-hole championship golf course, tennis courts, a pool, a fitness center, and a restaurant. Nearby, the all-suite Carmel Valley Ranch sits on 500 lush acres adjacent to the 4,400-acre Garland Ranch Regional Park so guests may enjoy easy access to miles of scenic hiking and explore gardens and other natural wonders bordering the resort’s Pete Dye-designed golf course. Most ranches and resorts are just minutes – albeit via car given the terrain – from more than 20 vineyards and wine-tasting rooms. Among the “musts” to visit while in the area are Folktale Winery & Vineyards and Joullian Vineyards & Winery. Folktale, located on the land that once served as Chateau Julien Wine Estate, opened its doors in 2015. Named because its lauded winemaker Gregory Ahn and his team believe every great bottle of wine tells a story, the vineyard boasts a massive garden, a barrel room, a stage, indoor and outdoor tasting spaces, games, and even a restaurant in addition to the actual planted vines and working vineyard operations. Less than 10 minutes from Folktale, at first blush Joullian looks more gothic cathedral than vineyard. Once closer, however, the rest of the vineyard reveals itself. On-site, enjoy tours, barrel tastings, wine tastings, and self-catered picnics. Joullian also happens to be just a mile or two from a handful of other great wine spots, including Cowgirl Winery and Bernardus Winery. The culinary bar is set just as high in Carmel Valley as it is in Carmel, thanks to Kathy’s Little Kitchen, Corkscrew Cafe, Valley Kitchen, Roux, and Lucia. Clearly a visit to these two regions that share one name has endless possibilities. For more information, visit www.carmelcalifornia.com. So Scottsdale! July ‘21

SumoMaya puts contemporary Asian ingredients on ice with its Mucho Grande Umami Martini
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
From drinks to dishes, SumoMaya’s menu showcases the best in modern Mexican and Asian cuisines. This cultural connection makes for diverse drink offerings, including Japanese sake, margaritas, Mexican beers and an array of tequilas. Beyond this, there are also signature cocktails inspired by each region. Though its name is partially in Spanish, the Mucho Grande Umami Martini ($18) is a love letter to ingredients from the far east. “The first step in building this twist on a dirty martini is to sous vide Japanese Suntory Roku Gin with mushrooms,” says Raymond James, bar manager of SumoMaya. “However, these aren’t just any mushrooms. They are the enoki species, which are native to Japan and have this really sweet quality with a hint of salt versus the pure earthiness one expects in most mushrooms.” After 24 hours of being infused, the gin is strained, rebottled and chilled immediately to lock in the flavors. Once the umami is ordered, the gin is combined with dry sake and Pocari Sweat, a Japanese sports drink akin to Gatorade which is known for its abundance of electrolytes. “Rather than simply serve in a chilled martini glass, we pour the cocktail into a glass soy sauce pot and tuck into a wooden plank box filled with granita-style shaved ice,” James says. “We then garnish the box with an olive or two and cauliflower and then bring it tableside with a small, specialty martini glass.” Guests may pour the umami at their leisure, ensuring it stays chilled in the ice until diners are ready to enjoy. Delicate and sweet with a dry finish and the smallest hint of salinity, it is a refreshing take on the classic martini. SumoMaya, 6560 N. Scottsdale Road, Scottsdale; www.sumomaya.com; 480.397.9520.

CHEF CONVERSATIONS In the kitchen with Samantha Sanz of elements and jade bar Samantha Sanz is the chef de cuisine of both elements and jade bar at Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort, where she dreams up farm fresh American cuisine with Asian and Latin accents amidst some of the most breathtaking views in the Southwest. BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ / PHOTO BY DEBBY WOLVOS
What inspired you to cook? I was born and raised in Nogales, Mexico, where my family owned a restaurant, Trocadero, for 60 years. It was my second home, so much so when I was 6 I picked up a skillet and started cooking while my mother’s back was turned. And I never stopped. How did you make your way to elements? In 2008, I moved to Arizona to attend the Le Cordon Bleu College of Culinary Arts and began my professional career as a pantry chef at elements, so this is my second time around here! Prior to coming back in 2020, most folks know me from my time as chef de cuisine at Virtu Honest Craft or for the five years I spent at Talavera, where I earned my two James Beard nominiations. What dishes are you most excited about on the current elements menu? When I first started at elements in 2008, they had the best calamari in the state. The dish is still on the menu, and even better than I remember. At breakfast, don’t miss my authentic Mexican huevos rancheros, and at lunch don’t sleep on the burger. It is so addicting I jokingly blame it for any COVID-19 weight gain. Finally, the tuna crudo, which is a beautiful blend of elements’ signature Asian touches and my Latino ingredient leanings. What’s your wildest kitchen memory? How about my wildest-smelling memory? While looking for something at the beginning of a shift in my early days, I shuffled a pan I assumed was empty only to find it was full of sea bass marinating in miso sauce. The entire contents spilled on me, and I had to work the next eight hours smelling of fish. What would readers be surprised to know about you? I can baile folklorico with the best of them. That is the overall term for Mexican folkoric dancing, and I do it in the full traditional dress and everything. Any foods you personally don’t like? Anything too eggy turns me off. For example, I will not eat anything with hollandaise. Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort, 5700 E. McDonald Drive, Paradise Valley; 855.245.2051; www.sanctuaryoncamelback.com.

Grilled Octopus
KOVO Modern Mediterranean Due to its abundance, octopus is wildly popular in KOVO owner Yianni Ioannou’s home country of Cyprus. Chicken Tagine
Tash at Talking Stick Resort Reminiscent of the sort of dish found at a local restaurant alongside the Mediterranean Sea in North Africa, this one-pot wonder is full of warm Moroccan spices, preserved lemons, olives, and dried fruit. The classic Moroccan stew is cooked in a custom handmade tagine, which is a vessel that functions like a slow cooker to lock in moisture, creating a rich, flavorful and fragrant dish. Tender seasoned chicken is delicately placed in the tagine with slow-cooked vegetables, turmeric, garlic, golden raisins, and more. $22. www.talkingstickresort.com.
Spaghetti Porcini Carbonara
Milk + Honey Espresso Bar and Eatery This creamy pasta is a kosher version of the traditional Italian pork dish. The original carbonara hails from Rome and utilizes cured pork and egg to create a glossy plate of pasta. While most of the recipe – the pasta, egg and cheese – remains true to the classic version, the pork is replaced with porcini mushrooms, which provides the same earthy, nutty flavor and meaty texture. $22. www.milkandhoneyjcc.com.

Gamberi E Feta
Marcellino Ristorante Like Ioannou, Marcellino chef-owner Marcellino Verzino is inspired by his home country of Italy as well as his extensive work and travel across the Med, including to Campania and the Greek Islands. The dish also has a fresh layer of shaved, sweet red cabbage tossed with lemon dressing. $20. www.marcellinoristorante.com.

Salt Springs Mussels
T. Cook’s at Royal Palms Resort and Spa Though the mussels are technically sourced from Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, this dish is 100% derived from the European seaside classic. Here, the mussels are floating in a bath of savory parmesan cream broth with spinach and baby heirloom tomatoes atop spicy sausage that has been soaked in white wine, spices and Pernod, which is an anise-flavored liqueur from France. End NEW IN TOWN
BUON APPETITO! Campo Italian Bistro & Bar opens in Scottsdale
BY ALISON BAILIN BATZ
Nearly a year ago, James Beard Awardwinning chef Alessandro “Alex” Stratta opened Stratta, a fast-casual concept serving nutrient-dense Mediterranean fare. Around the same time, Stratta was also in talks to partner with Genuine Concepts, the locally owned restaurant group behind The Vig, among others. “In early 2021, my longtime friend and fellow award-winning chef Jeremy Pacheco joined the Genuine Concepts family as well, signing on as the brand’s culinary director,” Stratta says. “We jumped in headfirst in the kitchen together, soon realizing that as much as we loved bringing farm fresh Mediterranean fare to Scottsdale at Stratta, our hearts kept calling us to the incredible variety and bold flavors of the rustic Italian countryside.” As a result, the two put their heads together on a wholly new vision for the Stratta space. The concept, partially owned

by Stratta, is under the Genuine Concepts brand and opened June 1. “We named our new baby Campo, which means ‘field’ in Italian in homage to the countryside,” Pacheco says. Campo is a modern Italian tavern offering a menu of shareable antipasti and snacks as well as pizzas, salads, sandwiches, fresh pasta and regularly changing entrees. In order to stay true to the Italian ethos of using only the freshest seasonal ingredients, Campo features local, organic foods from Huss Brewing Co., Four Peaks Brewing Company, McClendon’s Select, Queen Creek Olive Mill, Crow’s Dairy Inc., Sonoran Pasta Co., and more. Of particular note on the opening menu is the Rovey Wagyu Beef Carpaccio ($18) with local pecorino cheese, micro arugula, sherry vinaigrette and sea salt; Mafaldini Pescatore ($32), which is a squid ink pasta with lobster, mussels, clams and shrimp in a luscious tomato broth; and the Marco pizza ($17), with calabrese salami, Schriener’s sausage, mozzarella, parmesan, basil, oregano and red pepper flakes ($17). Beyond local and regional beers and wines, the cocktail menu showcases several American and Italian favorites alike, ranging from limoncello and sangria to infused martinis and margaritas. Among the early favorites on the cocktail menu are the Fricello ($13), which is a cross between limoncello and Champagne; and the Campo Old Fashioned ($13), a take on an old fashioned using Old Forester bourbon, blood orange amaro and orange bitters. With the change in the menu and concept came a change to the 3,200-squarefoot space as well. “We wanted to develop a handful of atmospheres within our four walls to give guests the opportunity to choose their own dining aesthetic, which resulted in textured walls, mixed woods and coppers yet in an open floor plan with community and singular tables alike,” Stratta says. Campo is open Sunday and Tuesday through Thursday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m. Closed Monday. Campo Italian Bistro & Bar, 8260 N. Hayden Road #A102, Scottsdale; 480.597.9195; www.campoitalian.com.
