It sure feels good to be back! After taking five months off to welcome a little boy into our family, I’m happy to return to all that is So Scottsdale: the events, the people, the food. It’s so exciting to get reconnected to our community and all that it offers – even in the summer! While many people flock to cooler climes during July, there’s still tons of things to keep busy with right here in the desert, from cool cabanas at local resorts (page 60) and water activities for the fam (page 55) to indoor workouts (page 62) and frozen sweet treats (page 102). SPREADING HER WINGS Adriane Grimaldi educates and inspires at Butterfly Wonderland

“Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” So the saying goes, attributed to many different people, including Mark Twain. But no matter the author, the sentiment rings true: work doing what you love, and it will seem more like play. That’s certainly the case for Adriane Grimaldi, the

director of education at Butterfly Wonderland, who has turned a lifelong passion for butterflies and more than 20 years of experience as a teacher into her dream job. Grimaldi’s childhood home in Southern California housed a tree that was a host for mourning cloak butterflies. As a child, she

Pulse UP CLOSE would gather the caterpillars, put them in jars and feed them during their metamorphosis. When the chocolate-colored butterflies, adorned with blue spots, would emerge, she would name them all. “However, as an 8-year-old trying to come up with a hundred different names, I became incredibly stressed,” she says. “Instead, I decided to name them all ‘Buttercup.’ If I saw one flying in my yard, I would say, ‘Look, there’s Buttercup!’” Shortly after graduating from Arizona State University with a journalism degree, she went on a butterfly tour in southern Arizona with Jim Brock, a longtime lepidopterist (the official name for someone who studies moths and butterflies) and author of several books about butterflies. On that trip, Brock shared something that has stuck with her. “He said, ‘When we see a butterfly, we are seeing a survivor. There is something at each stage of a butterfly’s lifecycle – egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and adult butterfly – that can prevent it from going onto the next stage. Butterflies are fragile yet resilient; when we admire their beauty, color, or species, it’s important to appreciate all it took to get there.’”

Career Metamorphosis Butterfly Wonderland (www.butterflywonderland.com) is the largest butterfly conservatory in America, where thousands of butterflies fly freely in an indoor rainforest setting. The one-of-a-kind center also features interactive exhibits, a butterfly emergence gallery, a 3D movie theater and more. There, Grimaldi works with a staff of six education employees, plus interns and volunteers, who serve as resources for visitors as they share facts and show them how Butterfly Wonderland receives and cares for more than 1,200 chrysalises each week from butterfly farmers around the world. She also handles school and tour groups, educational programming, workshops, and events. “The beauty of my role is that I never stop learning or taking away new experiences about butterflies and the rainforest – and the creatures that call it home,” Grimaldi says. “Through these incredible opportunities and experiences, I can be the best educator to the visitors at Butterfly Wonderland.” Most of what Grimaldi has learned about butterflies came through reading books, and attending classes, seminars and conferences with other butterfly experts from around the globe — and simple observation of her butterfly garden, which has attracted 25 species to her own backyard. She has built about 30 similar butterfly gardens in cities and schools, giving lectures about butterflies and how to cultivate the gardens. She is a teacher at heart, having designed Butterfly Wonderland’s school field trip curriculum so that it meets Arizona science standards “To be able to share my knowledge with others is what I love most,” she says. “I get to talk about butterflies to students and guests each day. I love seeing the expressions on students’ faces as they see the butterflies at Butterfly Wonderland and watching the guests’ eyes light up in amazement when they realize those butterflies are born in our facility and released into our conservatory that day.”

She visited Mexico to see the monarchs over-winter in the Oyamel fir trees and went to the butterfly farm in Costa Rica where Butterfly Wonderland gets their Blue Morpho butterflies (the large, gorgeous iridescent blue butterflies that are most popular with guests). “This position with Butterfly Wonderland has presented me with amazing opportunities that have been extremely memorable, and impactful,” she says. “It puts in perspective their journey from that farm in Costa Rica, as merely a chrysalis, to their arrival at Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale where they eventually emerge as beautiful butterflies.”

Beyond Butterflies While butterflies are her main calling, Grimaldi is an accomplished long-distance ocean swimmer, and is currently working on an inspirational book about her swims, which have included the Alcatraz swim, a 5.2-mile swim from one Cayman Island to another, and an upcoming 3-mile swim in Puerto Rico. She was also a foster parent for 10 years, which inspired her to establish the Sewing Project, where volunteers make kidfriendly backpacks out of pillow cases and give them to foster children. “The sad reality is that when children are taken out of the home due to neglect or abuse, they are given a trash bag to carry out whatever personal items or special belongings they are taking with them,” Grimaldi says. “To me, that felt so harsh and sent such a negative message to these kids, who are already going through so much.” Through the project, more than 75,000 pillowcase backpacks have been made and donated to foster children all over Arizona and across the country.

CONTAGIOUS KINDNESS Francine Sumner connects local youth to the resources they need

Francine Sumner is on a mission to shatter the stigma that surrounds mental health. The founder and CEO of Kid in the Corner (www.kidinthecorner.org) created the nonprofit organization in 2017 after she lost her youngest son to suicide. “The loss of Zach was certainly the catalyst but knowing that we could not change Zach’s story but had potential to change future stories was the true motivation to start Kid in the Corner,” Sumner says. After reflecting on Zach’s story, it was clear to Sumner that stigma played the starring role. By starting frank conversations, Sumner and her team are able to provide youth with the skills, tools and resources they need to reach out to others, take care of their own mental health and be a safe and caring person that others can talk to. Sumner’s background in training and education comes in handy when spreading awareness. As a previous owner of an award-winning jewelry design business, she knew what it was like to build a brand from the ground up. “It is all about having a vision, staying true to your mission and building a great team,” she says. Kid in the Corner started around her dining room table with friends and family that knew the tough conversations with youth that needed to happen. Sumner has reached thousands of youth, changed stories and saved lives with her Penny Pledge Program. “When someone completes the program, they receive a penny with a drilled hole and then they take the Penny Pledge, an individual call to action that reminds them to reach out to the kid in the corner. To date, over 30,000 people have taken the Penny Pledge. This year, Kid in the Corner will reach upward of 5,000 youth, host four community events and begin work on an app that will complement its current programming of providing critical resources, tools and other information. “Every time I hear that a youth has come forward, advocated for themselves and have gotten help, I know what we are doing is working,” she says. “Changing and saving one life at a time makes all that we do worth it.”

When Robert Rossi recently relocated his talent management agency from California to Arizona, he brought some of his Southern California style with him. Most days, Rossi walks into his office wearing a tailored button-down with a blazer and vintage loafers. His signature look is a blazer paired with G-Star pants and Gucci sneakers, but he does rely on surf culture fashion on the weekend. “You’ll usually find me wearing shirts and shorts by Billabong, Quicksilver, O’Neill and always wearing Vans slip on shoes,” he says. Over the years, Rossi’s style has become much more tailored. “I am a slender, lean guy and buying off the rack can be challenging. When I dress, it is all about the fit,” he says. “As far as colors, patterns, styles, and trends, I find it fun and adventurous to mix and layer color and patterns on top of colors and patterns.” The one thing Rossi is sure to have on hand at all times is a nice watch from his collection that he’s curated his entire life. “My earliest memory as a 5-year-old boy is asking Santa for a watch. And he delivered. A Popeye Timex! Today, I never leave the house without a watch, my favorite being a vintage Rolex,” Rossi says.

What are your most prized fashion possessions? A vintage pair of Carrera Porsche design foldable sun glasses and matching leather case I found at a vintage store in the Hudson Valley and my Tom Ford blue suede satin twill lined jacket. Both pieces are showstoppers and when I wear them, people always stop to ask who and what I am wearing. How does travel inspire your style? Visits to Italy always influence my fashion. I am Italian and the fashion I see in Italy, especially in the Northern Tuscan area where my family is from, is something I find inspirational and familiar. What are your favorite brands? Wearing pieces and outfit combinations that never go out of style ensures Elisabeth A. Pickle never looks like she’s trying too hard. Effortlessness is key for her timeless style. Hailing from southern Maine, Pickle’s closet has evolved from housing mostly black and gray items that could withstand a harsh East Coast winter to versatile layering pieces in vibrant hues reminiscent of Scottsdale sunsets. “I live in color!” she says. Pickle favors midcentury modern prints and patterns from designers including Trina Turk and Orla Kiely, as well as wide-leg pants, oversized white shirts and structured blazers. As a trusts, estates and intellectual property attorney, a power suit in white or a pop of color is her signature uniform. Influenced by designer Diane von Furstenberg, Pickle incorporates the designers iconic wrap dresses. “There is still no wardrobe that is considered complete without [a wrap dress],” says Pickle, adding she is also inspired by Stevie Nicks. “Her freewheeling style of chiffon skirts and billowing velvet sleeves appeals to my gypsy loving soul.” To top it off, Pickle’s wardrobe includes a modern denim jacket in every color. “You can throw it over everything,” she says.

As a model, Tanisha Harper has been featured in hundreds of magazines, advertisements and runway shows, but her new role as Jordan Ashford on General Hospital may be her most exciting gig yet. Growing up, Harper was known for her love of fashion. “Every summer when visiting my grandmother, I’d show her all these outfits I liked from the magazines,” she says. “We would recreate the looks and I’d go to school in all these crazy, avant-garde outfits.” One day, when Harper was watching a fashion show at Scottsdale Fashion Square mall at age 14, she was approached by a woman who asked if she was interested in modeling. Harper immediately said no – she wanted to be a fashion designer. But Harper and her mom visited the woman’s agency at her insistence and found a warm, welcoming environment. The woman later said she’d sent a photo of Harper to Nike, who was asking if she would join a campaign promoting their newest collection. “When she told my mom how much money it was, my mom was like, ‘OK, where do we sign?” Harper, who started her career with the Ford Model Agency, felt right at home. “I loved it. In Arizona, there weren’t many Black models at the time, so I was working like crazy. It allowed me to be independent – I had my own money and could save for college and go shopping to buy clothes, which was what I really wanted!” But it took a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Harper to realize this wasn’t just a side job. About two years after she began modeling, she entered a national competition to be on the cover of Cosmopolitan – and made it to the top four out of thousands of entries. She was flown to New York, featured on the Today show and The Oprah Winfrey Show, and shot test covers with world-renowned photographer Patrick Demarchelier. “That was a pivotal moment, when I really thought this could be a career for me,” says Harper, who had already decided that being a designer wasn’t the best fit for her. Though she didn’t win the competition, her feature in the magazine exposed her to an array of high-profile clients. Today, Harper’s resume includes names like Vogue, Ralph Lauren and L’Oréal Paris. A SHOWSTOPPING ACT Eager to see where her career could take her, Harper finished high school and college early, studying media arts and marketing at the University of Arizona. After graduation, she moved to Los Angeles, where she booked her first acting gig on The Bold and the Beautiful. She enjoyed it so much that when a friend mentioned she was auditioning for a different soap opera that was looking to cast a Black model who could act, Harper’s interest was piqued. “Rule of thumb is you never crash an audition you weren’t invited to,” she says. “I was apprehensive, but figured it was worth a shot.” When the casting director saw Harper and asked if she’d auditioned yet, Harper said she was just waiting for a friend – but they handed her a script anyway and thrust her into the metaphorical spotlight. “Funny enough, my girlfriend didn’t get the role, but I did – a series regular on an American telenovela called Desire.” Harper credits the series for giving her a crash course in acting, sparking a love affair that led to her booking roles in a variety of shows and movies, including Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Dear White People. But she was still modeling fulltime, traveling frequently and sometimes missing out on important auditions. And at a time when retouching photos wasn’t as widespread, the pressure of being perfect started to catch up with her. “You couldn’t show up with a scar or bruise because it took time out of the production schedule to cover them up. If I got a pimple, I could lose a job. That was tough for me as a teenager, and as I got older I started to get insecure. I needed to remember that this was supposed to be fun, that you’re supposed to love what you do.” When it came time to choose between the two career paths, Harper bowed out of the modeling industry and decided to pursue her passion for acting. But Harper credits her modeling experiences for helping her hone her persistence. “In both modeling and acting, you’re rejected every day, people constantly looking at your photos or audition tapes and saying yes or no,” she says. “It’s hard not to take criticism to heart. With modeling, I built a tough skin – you just have to keep fighting.”

Harper’s biggest break to date came at the end of last year, when she had the opportunity to audition for a part on General Hospital. She had weeks to prepare for her screen test, working with coaches and honing her character, who she was told was a district attorney. “I’m really drawn to roles of power, and my mom is an attorney, so I knew this was it – I really needed to get this role” Harper says. And her hard work and preparation paid off – Harper got the job. But when she received her script a few days before going to set, she realized she wasn’t playing an

attorney, but an established character – police commissioner Jordan Ashford. “They had kept it hidden because the producer wanted a fresh take on the character. It definitely came as a shock – it was an even bigger role than I thought I was getting!” Harper, who debuted as Ashford this March, says joining General Hospital has been something of a dream job. “I pinch myself every day sitting there in my dressing room. Working on an iconic set with people I look up to and respect – this is what I focused on, what I created. I just can’t believe this is my life.”

CHEERING ON CHANGE Over the past few years, Harper says she’s noticed more roles available to people of color, members of the LGBTQ community and people with disabilities. “Diversity within the industry is always an ongoing battle. My hope is that the rise of inclusivity continues to grow, with more thought-provoking roles for people with diverse backgrounds.” Looking forward, Harper is excited to further her acting career while sparking change in the industry, hopefully making some more forays into producing and writing along the way. “I’ve written several scripts I’d love to

get developed, one of many hats I’ve worn,” says Harper, who once edited a national magazine and wrote for many others. “Writing would’ve been the next step had my modeling career not taken off. It’s such a powerful tool.” Another powerful tool, Harper says, is knowing how to root for yourself no matter what. “We all have those days where we wonder if we’re on the right path, but you have to really believe in yourself to see your goals achieved. During times where I’d do twenty auditions to no avail, it took me loving myself, continuing to work harder

and make sure I was best prepared for my acting jobs, to see it through.” When not caught up in the hustle and bustle of her career, Harper looks to visiting her family in Arizona and reconnecting with nature as a source of peace. Though her life can be hectic, it’s all by design. “At the end of the day, I love a challenge. In these challenging careers, it’s about rising through – as a writer, getting your words out there; as a model, creating an image; on camera, portraying a character the way you feel they should be portrayed. It’s so important to have your voice heard."

I began helping in his office and knew real estate would be perfectly coupled with a Bachelor’s in Marketing, and then and there, the decision to go into real estate was made,” she says. Janelle finds her motivation from the spiritual and earthly realms. “My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Each day, I want my attitude, actions, and success to point to Him, from whom all blessings flow,” she says. “My parents are also a huge inspiration to me.” Because of the volatile and stressful nature of the real estate market, it’s best if an agent enjoys what they do, and Janelle says her favorite part of the job is that she’s able to be a resource for all things,

not just real estate. “Whether it be where to send your kids to school, where to get your hair done, or which restaurants to go to- I love connecting my clients to the best in my community. Having lived in the Phoenix area all my life, I have 30+ years of references to give.” Janelle’s commitment to her clients and the business hasn’t gone unnoticed. shley Krolak is the woman behind the Krolak Group with Russ Lyon Sotheby’s International Realty. She focuses on helping clients create the American dream of homeownership throughout Phoenix and northern Arizona. Ashley was born and raised in Scottsdale and grew up in a family of entrepreneurs. “Growing up my parents owned a variety of different businesses, and have taught me everything I know,” she shares. “I work with my mother in real estate and my brothers work within my dad’s construction company. Tim McBride is making an impact on his community

ne wouldn’t usually see a link between the worlds of sports and real estate, but Tim McBride tapped into his past experience to become a top-rated real estate agent in Scottsdale. Before jumping into residential real estate in 2017, Tim spent the previous 12 years working in the sports agency, entertainment and marketing realm. “My career began in Los Angeles, where my dream was to become a sports agent. It didn’t come as a shock to anyone when she decided to make her career in real estate, and after working for other companies, she formed the Guelker Girls group. Alison earned her real estate license while in college at the University of Arizona in 2004, and after graduation, she joined a team of realtors in Tucson. She spent five years in Las Vegas working with a top Vacation Ownership Corporation followed by a promotion that brought her back to Phoenix to lead the Arizona Marketing Team. Misty Soderberg enjoys getting her hands dirty. As an artist, primarily in sculpture, she has a lifetime of experience getting elbow deep into clay. Misty and her sister, Heather, showed an aptitude for sculpting at a young age, each going professional at the age of 2, and being featured in People Magazine, on Paul Harvey’s The Rest of the Story radio show, and national television’s That’s Incredible! Like many who find an early calling, Soderberg had a good mentor. Her father, John Soderberg, is a sculptor known for creating monumental bronzes that are displayed throughout the country and locally, such as the Merlin and Sacajawea bronzes that grace the public areas of Sedona. Spending a large part of her formative years assisting her father on his monumental bronze figures, she simultaneously carved out a niche as an artist in her own right. “Working with my dad was essentially like having a traditional apprenticeship, where I helped him make molds for his sculptures, doing a lot of the grunt work, and learning through experience and practice,” she says. In developing her own distinct style, Soderberg drew on her knowledge of the master sculptors her father encouraged her to study – such as the Renaissance artists Michelangelo and Bernini – while incorporating touches of fantasy and imagination which add a bit of levity to her subjects. “My personal aesthetic is more stylized and looser, while my dad prefers realism,” she says. “For me, my work is more about a feeling, whether through expression or composition. I want someone to look at my work and know what the piece is about without having to understand the back story.” Soderberg’s current work is comprised of figurative and wildlife sculptures, inspired by her love of animals and Native American culture. Pieces like Free Spirit, an American Indian woman finding joy in nature, may be a mere 13 inches high but invokes an unforgettable feeling of freedom and independence. Growing up in Camp Verde surrounded by nature and animals also inspires her bronzes, which include a menagerie of eagles, frogs, horny toads, geckos, and bats. “I love sculpting figurative, but am also drawn to animals. I am really into owls right now,” she says. In addition to sculpting and mold making, Soderberg recently expressed an interest to return to painting, changing the name of her studio to the Misty C. UP UP & AWAY FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS For the last several months valley residents have been ecstatic over our exceptionally fabulous spring weather. Unlike many years, when we seem to only enjoy spring for one brief week, this year’s season was long and luxurious. One of my favorite new disciplines has been hiking Pinnacle Peak Park I have shared this newly favored mountain with out-of-town guests and new local hiking buddies. The wonderful thing about this particular hiking venue is it can be an easy climb up to the first summit or a two-mountain interval training course. Your choice. I have done both and the views are breathtaking, (get it), no matter what. This new discipline has also led to a new discovery. The splendor of our own Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North.. This new

spring ritual became a morning hike followed by breakfast at Proof Restaurant where you can view the beautiful mountain just conquered. The Sunday brunch has the best Lox ‘N Bagel in town, and an après hike mimosa is a fitting reward for your efforts. Also, try Chef Roxy’s seasonal hummus. The Spring’s beet hummus was fantastic. Now for a Summery snack try the citrus lemon. However, now that summer is officially here, the heat is climbing much more than I am so it’s time to talk Staycation! While people are considering gas prices, the road trips of summers past are not first on

The perfect day two is to take on the early morning mountain hike, even the short one-hour climb will make you feel like you have earned that luxury spa treatment that you have reserved. I suggest the Nopal massage which uses fresh Nopal cactus leaves and essential oils to hydrate, leaving your muscles relaxed and skin silky soft. At check in and poolside you are greeted with chilled Oshibori towels offered with tongs from a silver platter. Oshibori is a wet hand towel and these are delightfully scented with sage, a lovely touch of Four Season’s hospitality throughout the day. Just a mountain away felt like a million miles away, and I never left Scottsdale.

A year ago, the name “Lucid Air” may have brought images of a 70s rock band rather than a luxurious new all-electric vehicle built in a sparkling contemporary factory here in Arizona. Lucid Motors is a multibillion-dollar startup with its sights set as a legitimate alternative to the mega successful Tesla. But the new Lucid Air – producing 800 horsepower – a crazy quick and super luxurious high-end sedan that mixes Mercedes’ elegance with tour de force advanced technology, makes Tesla seem so yesterday. With great fanfare, Tesla recently announced it broke the 400-mile range barrier, a landmark milestone for electric cars. Central California’s Lodi beckons with boutique wineries, recreation and bucolic scenery

Located 40 minutes from Sacramento, Lodi (pronounced “lowdye”) is considered to be the Zinfandel capital of the world. The city’s Mediterranean climate and soil make it an ideal place for wine grape growing, with more than 85 wineries in town. Besides the stellar wineries – many of which are run by families who’ve lived in the area for decades – Lodi also offers sunshine, recreation and rich agricultural heritage.

Sip Stops Walk up a small hill to find the rolling hills of the vineyards at Bokisch Vineyards. In addition to the gorgeous view, Bokisch is renowned for its Spanish varietals. After moving to Spain in 1992, owners Markus and Liz Bokisch fell in love with the country’s food and wine, hoping to bring their experience back to California. Today, the winery produces seven Spanish varietals, including garnacha blanca, verdejo, garnacha, and monastrell. Housed inside a yellow building, Acquiesce Winery is known for its award-winning white wines. Tastings here include curated food pairings. Inside the barn-like tasting room of Lucas Winery, try a handful of craft wines. One highlight is the ZinStar, made from the organically farmed ZinStar vineyard that was planted in 1933. After seeing the beautiful vines on the property, guests are encouraged to head inside to the barrel room and finish up their tour with Lucas’ dessert wine and some dark chocolate. Cypress trees line the driveway on the way to Mettler Family Vineyards, run by a family who has been farming wine grapes since the late 1800s. Escape to the tropics with the Hawaii 5-0 at Hula’s Modern Tiki

As temperatures soar, colorful rum cocktails in a tropical oasis are a perfect cool-down. And if you can’t hop on a plane, a visit to Hula’s Modern Tiki might just be the next best thing. All three locations are designed to transport guests to an island paradise. “It’s an escape to a tropical realm from all the worries of the outside world,” says owner Dana Mule. “We have great food, strong, tasty drinks and amazing customer service.” Settle in for dishes like Island-style poke and luau pork, along with Tiki classics such as zombies and mai tais. “I think we’ve sold almost 500,000 [mai tais] since we opened in 2009,” Mule says. With its ombre of sunset hues, diners are in for a tropical treat with the Hawaii 5-0. Like many of the world’s delicious Tiki drinks, it starts with the Caribbean spirit staple: rum. Forming the foundation is a split base of Bacardi Superior light rum, sweetened with molasses, and Cruzan 9, named for its warm spices including vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, mace, allspice, pepper, and juniper berry. Fruit juices are also key to the recipe. Pineapple, passion fruit and fresh orange juices are used to enhance the combination of rums. To balance this refresher, a splash of cranberry juice is also added to cut the sweetness with its rich tang. “Imagine all your worries left on the mainland,” Mule says. “You’re on a tropical beach with the sound of the waves and the scent of coconut tanning lotion. Morgan Malzahn is the executive pastry chef of Andaz Scottsdale Resort & Bungalows, where she whips up desserts for the property’s events and shares her sweet treats at Weft & Warp, the resort’s signature restaurant.

What is the best part about being a pastry chef? I love making people happy with food; it’s my love language, I guess you could say. There is nothing better than bringing back a childhood memory with a treat or making someone’s day better with a box of goodies. It warms my heart. What ingredients do you like to work with? Ingredients that are local to Arizona, like rosemary, juniper berries, citrus and pinons. It gives my desserts a sense of place, and it’s always fun to learn new indigenous ingredients that I would never have thought to use before moving out here from Michigan. What is your favorite thing about working at Andaz? I love that Andaz means “personal style” in Hindi. They embrace my quirkiness and encourage my funky desserts and I can really let my imagination run wild. What are some of your signature desserts at Weft & Warp? I make daily cakes, called a Slice of Paradise. I find inspiration from my boys, who are ages 8 and 9, and just have fun with cakes like Creamsicle, S’mores and Cookies & Cream. We end up selling out daily, even sometimes going through two cakes a night. I also like to take savory classics and turn them to the sweet side, like It’s A-Maize-Ing, a play on street corn with sweet corn panna cotta, tajin caramel corn, queso fresco lime cremeux, cilantro-lime sugar, and salted caramel sauce. If you weren’t a pastry chef, what would you be doing? I would have loved to be an architect. Now I get to design cakes, desserts, and gingerbread houses! ROCKIN’ RESTAURANT Sid’s Garage rolls open its doors at Desert Ridge

When you think about Idaho, the first image that pops up is likely of potatoes. Thanks to the recent opening of Sid’s Garage, a popular restaurant based in the Gem State specializing in half-pound burgers, boozy shakes and craft beers, potatoes may soon have a run for their money. The 3,269-square-foot, two-story space, located in The District at Desert Ridge Marketplace, is equal parts dining and gaming with a steampunk-style, high-energy aesthetic, oversized shaded patio, private dining spaces for rent, and live music several days a week. There are hanging steel keg-like structures from the ceiling along with industrial light fixtures and exposed brick on the walls. Team members amp up the vibe by wearing what feels like glam-rock costumes, some complete with wigs. There is a modern bar that serves as the centerpiece of the space and popular games like Pop-a-Shot, Skee-Ball and Pac-Mac lining the interior with images of Prince, Tom Petty and other rock gods hung above them. Each of the half-pound burgers on the menu is made from a proprietary combination of Wagyu and Black Angus

beef sourced from Snake River Farms and Double R Ranch but may be subbed for a plant-based patty on request. There are at least 10 burger options on the menu, each piled high with a wild assortment of ingredients. Notable current offerings include: El Jefe, with elote-style corn, mezcal-infused crema, chicharrons, cotija cheese, lime, and cilantro ($12.50); PBB & J, topped with peanut butter, raspberry-cayenne jam, candied bacon, cheddar and lettuce ($12.50); and 2-0-8, which features Granny Smith apples, brie, fig jam, balsamic glaze and spring mix ($13). Nashville hot chicken, grilled salmon and multiple hot dog entrees are also available. In addition to the main offerings, there is also a “nosh menu” featuring starters, sides and shareables for the tables including Bavarian pretzel bites with beer cheese fondue ($9); tempura green beans with basil-siracha aioli ($9); and Bacon & Eggs, which is four pieces of candied bacon suspended on a mini metal clothesline above two flash-fried deviled eggs ($16). The cocktail menu boasts homemade bloody marys, seasonal ciders, and an assortment of standard and rotating craft beers. However, the stars of the liquid show are the milkshakes, which are each available for $12 with the option to add alcohol or up to 25 milligrams of CBD for an extra charge. Currently, there are eight milkshakes on the menu mixed with everything from Fruity Pebbles and Cap’n Crunch to brown butter and toffee. They are then topped with things like full slices of red velvet or dark chocolate cake, lollipops or Drumsticks.
