Your Financial Wellbeing A Brew and a Chat with

Annabel and Tarnia from

TP Financial Solutions Tell us a bit about yourselves. We live and work in the lovely seaside town of Heysham and enjoy everything our local community has to offer. We love exploring the coastline with our two daughters and working in our family run business. Why did you start TP Financial Solutions? Having worked in financial services since 2007, we have

6

seen the good, the bad and the ugly of this industry and felt sure we could offer something different. We are focussed on empowering clients to achieve their goals, whatever they may be. What are the main reasons people get in touch with you? Often, the first question asked is the hardest for the clients. Generally, people have been putting off picking up the phone

but when they do the most common thoughts are ‘I know I have pensions but I’ve no idea what they are’ or ‘When will I be able to afford to retire’ and ‘Can I make my money work harder for me’. Pensions tend to be viewed as a complicated beast, so we try and break it down and make it easier, and understandable. How do you help your clients? We take our time chatting to them about what they have, what their future plans are, and what their ‘ideal’ retirement looks like, and see how achievable it is. We call it your ‘Brew and a Chat’ appointment, you talk, and we listen. We work off the basis that no question is a ‘daft’ question, and you can get as much information as you need from us. We help our clients with all aspects of financial planning from pensions to investment and protection (insurance) so you really should feel like you’ve made progress, even by the end of the first appointment.

Roots of Life Wellness Magazine www.therootsoflife.co.uk

Your Financial Wellbeing If people are thinking of seeking advice but haven’t yet, what would you say to them? It’s not as scary as it seems, and we aren’t scary! We don’t assume that you know anything more than you tell us and we give you plenty of time to talk through what you want to achieve. We will help decode

the jargon and help put everything in terms that relate to you personally. Nothing is one size fits all, and we understand these conversations take time, which is why we don’t charge for initial appointments, so that you can feel comfortable without worry of cost. You’ve got nothing to

lose, apart from a bit of time, with a friendly professional over a cup of tea.

Testimonial: “I can't thank Annabel and Tarnia enough for sorting mine and my husband’s pensions out. We both had different pensions all over the place, small amounts and large. We only had limited information on all the pensions. But it didn't cause a problem to this company they sorted everything in a relatively short time. They are very friendly and explained everything to us fully making sure we understood everything. Due to lockdown everything was done by Zoom meetings with Annabel, but it still felt like we knew her. I have no hesitation in recommending them and we wouldn't use anybody else now to deal with our pensions.” Julie - Carer.

Your Lifestyle

Love your Sun-kissed Skin this Summer Deborah Monshin

S

ummer's nearly here! We're all looking forward to getting out and enjoying the sunshine. Whether you walk, bike, swim, kayak, or lay on the beach getting a tan, it's vital to protect your skin. It's easy to forget that our skin takes time to acclimatise to the sun, especially if those lillywhite legs have been hiding in trousers all winter. Even if you are blessed with quick tanning skin, all skin types need to be protected.

Enjoying the sunshine means you need to take unnatural measures to keep your skin safe, and using sunscreen or sunblock is the best way to stay protected if you are active outdoors.

After Exposure to the sun:

Before Exposure to the sun: Sunscreen/sunblock: adds a barrier to the skin to reduce harmful rays from damaging the skin. Nothing protects your skin one hundred percent, so don't be complacent. Reapply as instructed, particularly if you are in and out of the water. And do consider taking a break in the shade if you can.

8

UVA light is associated with premature ageing of the skin. UVB light is associated with sunburn and damage to the skin. Protection against both is crucial.

Moisturiser: always shower off seawater or chlorinated water before applying a rich hydrating moisturiser. Apply overnight for extra hydration. Ooops – I've burned! Sunburn is severe dehydration of the skin. Sunburn is serious, as it may kick-start skin cancer. Being sensible is always the safest option, but if the worse happens, treat it as soon as you can. Aloe Vera Gel is the best natural product for burns. Its cooling properties instantly soothe. Keep applying the gel until it stops soaking in. Slather on another layer, which will create a seal on

top of your own skin, adding extra protection. Aloe Vera replaces moisture lost by over-exposure to the sun. It's always a good idea to keep an Aloe Vera plant in the kitchen for any burns. If you are away from home, go for a natural, unscented Aloe Vera Gel. One aspect you may not have considered is the harm that a cheap moisturiser or sunscreen/sunblock can do. Your skin is your largest organ, and it's the most porous part of your body. Everything you put on your skin enters your bloodstream. That's a scary thought. Some cheap skincare products contain ingredients that you really don't want to be absorbing.

Evil Ingredients:

Top Tips:

Oxybenzone: is linked to endocrine disruption, organ system toxicity, contact allergies. Sometimes called benzophenone-3, not to be confused with benzophenone, another common sunscreen ingredient. Octinoxate: A UV filter that protects from UVB rays, but not UVA sun rays. It may be listed as OMC, methoxy-cinnamate, or ethylhexyl methoxy-cinnamate. It's linked to endocrine disruption and reproductive toxicity. Researchers have detected this chemical in breast milk, urine, and blood. Homosalate: absorbs only UVB rays to prevent direct skin exposure. It's linked to hormone disruption and may also enhance the absorption of pesticides and enhance the penetration of other harmful ingredients found within the formulation. This ingredient does not break down in the environment. Nanoparticles: these can be 1000 times smaller than the width of a human hair. In sunscreen, they're most commonly found as nanoparticle titanium dioxide of zinc oxide. Because of their infinitesimally small size, nanoparticles may be fast-tracked into the body. Most of these ingredients are harmful to aquatic life and the environment. Also, avoid aluminium, DEA, MEA, and TEA, DMDM hydantoin & urea, Mineral oil, parabens (Methyl, Butyl, Ethyl, Propyl), PEG, phthalates, propylene glycol & butylene glycol, -siloxane or -methicone, 10

• Go for the highest protection sunscreen you can afford • Aim for an organic or natural skincare product • Wear UV blocking sunglasses • Read the label to avoid the above ingredients • Store it according to the instructions as this can impact the product's effectiveness.

• Use a hydrating moisturise and use liberally • Keep a tube of Aloe Vera Gel with you • Avoid the strongest sun between 10 am and 2 pm • Preventing sunburn and associated problems means you can have longer enjoying the summer but care for your body and hair the best you can. Have a fabulous summer!

Your Inspirational Poem A Silent Goodbye If you have a friend that walks away and you don’t understand why, Don’t judge them for this but say your silent goodbye.

The Earth is a place where the spirit can return and beautifully grow, It is a place where every soul is tested and can silently go.

It doesn’t mean that they don’t care: they may be hurting deep inside, Unable to express their feelings, perhaps they really have tried.

Would life not be a little easier with a friend by your side?

To share the heavy load deep within the heart, is not always an easy task, But you are not responsible for my friend if they never ask. To ask for help is not a weakness, that’s what friends are for, To share with one another their pain and love like never before. But to punish your friends with silence doesn’t help them understand, For this pushes away their understanding as you push away their hand. It is easier to walk away and not face those shadows and fears, But sooner or later the things you have not faced will strongly appear. The door must always be open for those that do silently walk away, Don’t feel sadness in your heart don’t force them to stay. For when they return back home and the door opens wide, You will be standing head held high and say that you have always tried.

To give you strength and courage with so much pride. How sad would your life have been with no one to hold your hand? Silently pushing away as you said “they don’t understand”, But if you have never opened your heart and spoken how you feel? How could they have ever known if nothing was ever real? Sometimes a friend may need to go away to learn things knew, And in time they will appreciate that they always had a friend in you. For a friendship is never lost and doesn’t mean you don’t care, But understand this my friend it is not your burden to share. Don’t feel guilty when friends silently say their goodbye, Don’t shed a tear for them don’t ever question why? For one day when the sun appears, you shall all again come together, Holding your hands so tight in friendship lasting now forever!

Your Mind Rewiring your brain to support your health The Lightning Process (LP) was designed by Dr Phil Parker PhD 22-years ago. At first it might seem a little unusual, because it is a training program to promote your ability to influence your own health. A mind-body approach to deal with health issues might be an uncomfortable idea for some and will not be the most appropriate solution for everyone, but I believe that the LP can be a game-changer for conditions where there seems no clear path ahead, and where conventional medical approaches offer no solution. The foundation of the LP is the concept of psycho-neurophysiology – using our mind to influence our neurology, which in turn influences our physiology which may have become stuck in fundamental ways. The most effective way we have to exert influence over truly physical symptoms is to simply use our mind in more ingenious ways than we may have been doing. We know, for example, how damaging the stress response is to our health and our life. When we have tools to switch off the stress response, 16

the brain starts to rewire and form new neural connections that switch the body’s natural healing systems back on. The LP teaches empowering skills and a series of carefully crafted steps to help you influence your brain-body connection in new and life-changing ways. Simple to learn, the LP promotes the effortless expansion of your comfort zone, through the consistent and appropriate use of the LP tools as needed. It does not involve pushing through or forcing yourself. We do our very best prior to the training to ensure that everyone is in the best possible place to get the full value from the LP. Initially we ask people to listen to a pre-course audio that covers some of the key ideas behind this approach to healing. I also encourage people to speak with a number of practitioners, so that they can

find the person that they will be most comfortable communicating with throughout their journey. The final step is an informal chat to ensure that the LP is a good fit, and this is the right time for someone to commit to a program like this. The LP seminar itself involves three consecutive half-days of training, either individually or in small groups, each day building on the knowledge and skills of the day before. The seminar is designed to be interactive and engaging, with coaching tailored to the needs of each individual client to help them achieve success. Materials and post training support are also included with the training.

Your Mind

Do you Suffer from Brain Fog? One of the more common issues that people deal with every single day is brain fog. This is a condition where a person cannot think clearly about everyday matters. Though this is a prevalent condition it isn’t widely recognised as an illness in many medical or psychological writings. What is Brain Fog? Brain Fog has been described as a feeling of mental confusion where the individual lacks mental clarity. It’s as if there is a loss of focus, and a sensation of “so close and yet so far”. The term “fog” is used because it feels as if a cloud comes over your thought process that reduces your ability to think clearly. Some common signs of brain fog There are a number of indicators that can show if you are experiencing the symptoms of typical brain fog and the most common are: • Sudden occurrences of memory loss with a noticeable and sudden decline in your short-term memory capacity. • An inability to navigate familiar spaces and places with a natural ease. • General feelings of fuzziness and a marked inability to think coherently and clearly.

What Causes Brain Fog? Brain fog can have many different causes but in the majority of cases, it is brought on by nutritional, metabolic, hormonal, and biochemical imbalances that stem from a variety of factors. The neuroendocrine system is the primary conduit of memory function. Dysfunction of this 20

• The constant feeling that your mind is moving through a thick fog or haze. • A reduction in the ability to pay attention and focus on detail. • Loss of overall mental sharpness and brain performance. • Difficulty concentrating or a lack of focus when talking to people or when watching a film or reading a book. system is the most common cause of brain fog. There are many conditions that can be associated or act as a trigger of brain fog. Brain fog can be a symptom of a nutrient deficiency, sleep disorder, bacterial overgrowth from overconsumption of sugar, depression, or even a thyroid condition. Other common brain

fog causes include eating too much and too often, inactivity, not getting enough sleep, chronic stress, and a poor diet. These are some of the most common causes of brain fog. Hormonal changes Hormonal transitions are common throughout your life, whether during pregnancy, post-partum, menopause, or just unexpected

Roots of Life Wellness Magazine www.therootsoflife.co.uk

Your Mind changes in your environment and lifestyle. Often these periods leave your brain feeling fuzzy and confused—one study found that 60 percent of women have difficulty concentrating during menopause. In some cases, changing mood or sleeping habits could be contributing to your foggy head feelings, but it could also be due to the fluctuating hormone levels while your body tries to restore balance. Impaired sleep Poor sleep hygiene, like an irregular sleep and wake time, getting less than seven to eight hours of sleep a night, or blue light exposure before bed disrupts your natural circadian rhythm – that is your internal body clock. This contributes to brain fog in a few different ways. In the case of blue light exposure close to bedtime, the blue wavelengths decrease the hormone melatonin that is essential for deep REM sleep. Both REM and non REM sleep is required to consolidate and process memories from the day. During the hours of 10pm and 2am is when your body and brain detoxify the most, so remaining in an active state during this time disrupts the body’s natural detoxification process and can contribute to fogginess.

Diet deficiencies and food sensitivities Vitamin B12 contributes to the formation of red blood cells and the maintenance of your central nervous system. It’s why a deficiency in B12 is sure to impair your energy levels and elicit an overall feeling of fatigue. A vitamin D deficiency can also be behind brain fog as decreased vitamin D levels are associated with impaired cognitive function. An unidentified food intolerance can also contribute to the foggy head feeling you’re experiencing. For example, gluten intolerance can lead to cognitive dysfunction via inflammatory pathways. Stress Though stress may seem like a common and relatively harmless term, chronic stress can wreak havoc on your body. When your body perceives a stressful situation, it activates the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), or the fight-or-flight response. This response triggers the release of epinephrine, also known as adrenaline, and norepinephrine, and ultimately diverts energy away from your body’s typical functions and towards the stressor. Depression and Anxiety Depression and anxiety have been shown to impair cognitive function, affecting executive function, attention, and memory.

Research suggests that this could be linked to either the loss of energy and motivation associated with mental health conditions, or physiological effects on the brain that make it difficult to function properly. If you struggle with depression or anxiety, talk to your healthcare provider about treatment options. Covid-19 Brain fog is now also recognised as a condition associated with having had Covid-19. Many people who have recovered from COVID-19 have reported feeling not like themselves: experiencing short-term memory loss, confusion, an inability to concentrate, and just feeling differently than they did before contracting the infection. How to clear brain fog To get to the root cause of any issues and resolve brain fog, Claudia, your Health Care Professional at BioMed will initially carry out an overall health assessment through in depth consultation, with the option of Computerised Health Screening. This comprehensive information enables Claudia to develop a Personalised Health Plan based on your individual specific requirements.

Your Body Yoga: A natural sleep remedy I

f anyone had told us as children -arguing about our early bedtimes, (or was that just me?!) - that a full night of good-quality sleep may be one of things we most crave as adults I’m not sure we would have believed them! Sleep is so essential for our health and wellbeing, as well as playing a crucial role in our cognitive processing and memory consolidation. Our physical body needs rest and the time to replenish on a cellular level. Sleep deprivation is considered torture for a reason- it is simply a non-negotiable part of being human. So why then do so many of us currently struggle to settle down to sleep, and what can we do to help ourselves? The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic has led to many experiencing increased levels of stress and anxiety amongst all the uncertainty; those whose livelihoods have been significantly impacted face financial concerns, and the repeat national lockdowns left many of us feeling isolated and cut-off from our friends and family. Well, the good news is that Yoga can help! Yoga is so much more than just stretching: it is the union of the mind, body and breath, and can have a beautifully soothing effect on our nervous system. It can take us out of our “fight, flight or freeze” sympathetic nervous system mode, and transport us to our “rest and digest” parasympathetic state, ultimately reducing our heart rate, blood pressure and stress hormone levels, among other physiological benefits. It can help us to turn down the volume of our often-relentless internal monologue, otherwise known as the “monkey mind”, creating space in the mind, balancing emotions, and relieving tension in the body. The more we practice relaxation on our yoga mats, the easier it can become to relax when we really need to, such as going to bed to prepare for sleep.

As if all these benefits of Yoga aren’t enough, did you know that there is also a style of yogic sleep? Known as Yoga Nidra, it is a practice of deep, guided meditation connecting you to the 5 layers of the body (Pancha Kosha): our physical, energetic, mental, intellectual and bliss bodies. Unlike other styles of yoga involving movement, Yoga Nidra is done with students lying down for the entire practice- perfect for those needing more rest! Additionally, 1 hour of Yoga Nidra has been proven to be as restful and effective of 4 hours of normal sleep, due to theta and delta brainwave activation. What are you waiting for? If you’re new to yoga/nidra you can try a variety of online classes for free on the VetYogi YouTube channel. From soothing Yin yoga, to balancing Hatha and energising Vinyasa, the classes range from just 5 minutes to 60 minutes so there is something to suit everybody! However, if you have any physical or mental health conditions it is always best to consult your doctor first. Stay safe, and sleep well!

Dr. Chloe Hannigan BVetMed MRCVS Chloe is a RYT-500 qualified yoga and meditation teacher, is registered with Yoga Alliance Professionals and splits her time between teaching yoga classes, speaking at conferences, and working as a vet. She also runs her business, VetYogi, with the more inclusive branch VY Tribe offering a range of yoga props, clothing and home fragrance items. 22

fter experiencing a chronic back injury in 2003 James found that conventional healthcare had nothing to offer, while complementary treatments had astonishingly positive results. With his curiosity awakened he consequently trained in Indian Head Massage, Swedish Massage, Reflexology, Reiki, Lomi Lomi, and ultimately

Integrated Myofascial Release with John Barnes. He has found Myofascial Release to be particularly effective and has focussed his work on this since 2009. In 2009 James qualified as a Temple Style Lomi Lomi Practitioner on Kauai, continuing his training in 2011 and up to the present date.

In November 2010 he graduated as a fully certificated Myofascial Release Therapist. He regularly goes to America to continue training with John Barnes and his areas of expertise include: • MFR (Myofascial Release) for the Spine and Sacrum

• MFR for the TMJ (Tempomandibular JointJaw)

• MFR for Breast Health (useful pre and post surgery)

• Unwinding for the whole body

• MFR for abdominal scar tissue and adhesions.

Myofascial Release is a physical therapy which works with the muscles (myo) and connective tissue (fascia) to release tensions caused by physical or emotional trauma. Myofascial Release is a safe and very effective hands-on technique that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the Myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion. This essential “time element” has to do with the viscous flow and the piezoelectric phenomenon: a

• Advanced Myofascial Therapy

low load (gentle pressure) applied slowly will allow a viscoelastic medium (fascia) to elongate. The connective tissue, or Fascia envelops all the other tissues in the body with a web-like living lattice. Imagine what happens to a string shopping bag when a heavy load is put in one corner the whole web is pulled out of shape - this is what happens to the fascia in the body, when a tension is present in one area the whole system is pulled out of alignment.

• Cervical -Thoracic MFR (neck and shoulders) • Myofascial Rebounding • Women's Health • Fascial Pelvis

By using focussed stretching and pressure on the muscles and fascia the whole system can be realigned, resolving long established discomfort. This physical therapy is a valuable tool in relieving chronic pain in the back, neck and shoulders, headaches, jaw pain, frozen shoulder, sciatica, PMS and many other common ailments. It is also very beneficial pre and post surgery.

hamanic Healing is one of the oldest practises and traditions in the world. It is thought to originate from the indigenous peoples of the Eveny and Evenki, Tungus speaking tribe in Siberia. Shaman translates as, `one who sees in the dark` or, `one who knows`. This ancient system stems from our ancestor's deep connection to Mother Earth and belief in animism which is the belief that everything contains spirit and is alive. They respected and honoured all of life knowing that we are nature not seperate and connected by an invisible web within the vast consciousness within the universe. Also, we can carry unhealed ancestral wounds that have been passed down, these can show up as unhealthy patterns, habits and beliefs and can affect our behaviour in this lifetime. Through my own individual and personal experiences l have found that Shamanic healing is an invitation to come back into balance, wholeness and to live a more fulfilling, joyful and purposeful life. It supports our own personal development and empowerment and guides us back to our true nature. This can be measured by a sense of inner peace and contentment with life. Your Season's Crystals A

s the days get warmer and the light stays longer, we tend to feel a sense of freedom that the Summer imbues upon us and as I walk along the hedgerows and begin to forage, I feel a gathering, a heightening of energy. This is the time of plenty, the Maiden transforms into the Mother. Her belly swells with new life from the growth that Spring poured forth. The Earth is green and lush to emulate this growth and fruit begins to form. This is a time to DO, represented by the Rune, Dagaz, a time to be busy, take opportunities, be active and socialise, sharing your energy with others. Be aware that you need to keep a balance in this energetic time and that being outdoors, and Earthing is extremely beneficial, as you can tap into the Earths energy and feel sustained not drained. My suggested crystal companions to support you at this time and assist you in staying energetically balanced are Sunstone and Carnelian, as well as any other red or orange gemstones. Keep them close by wearing them as jewellery or in your handbag/pocket, on a keychain etc. However, I don’t recommend you place them near your bed as they may interfere with your sleep patterns. Remember also to cleanse the crystals you use regularly, running water is fine for most crystals but always check if you are unsure.

Spring - The Earth yawns & Stretches Summer - The Earth smiles Autumn - The Earth laughs & sings Winter - The Earth sleeps Fast approaching is the Summer Solstice that marks the Midsummer, at the time of the longest day, 21 June in the northern hemisphere. It is traditional to gather flowers and herbs on Midsummers’ Eve as it is believed that this is when they are at their most potent. The entrance of your home is then decorated with these as it provides protection and invites in good fortune. So this Solstice bring the outside in as part of your celebration.

Carnelian is a warm and energising stone great for invigorating the mind and body. It boosts energy and promotes creativity and self-esteem. Carnelian helps to keep you energized during summertime when creative energy is at a high point. It aids us to be grateful for the blessings in our lives, as well as for those you are creating.

Crystals that Resonate Sunshine & Creativity

Take time each day to savour life itself and be kind, to yourself and to all sentient beings. Sending only the Warmest Wishes and Brightest Blessings your way!

Sunstone is a stone of good will and optimism. Having invigorating energy, sunstone was once considered a magical talisman that attracted prosperity and good health. Sunstone invites in enlightened male energy, abundance, solar energy, stone of leadership. It was apparently used by the Vikings as a navigational device.

Your Local Food and Drink Producers

Supporting Local Food Producers Deborah Monshin With restrictions on travel and many businesses closed, our dependency on supermarkets is at an all-time high. But now could be the perfect opportunity to support our local businesses as they adapt to click and collect, takeaway or delivery practises in the struggle to survive.

I

t's certainly easy to sit in a cosy chair, click a few dozen buttons, and by the miracle of modern technology, our food rolls up in a chilled van a few days later. Hurrah! I'm all for simplicity, but what is the price on our health and local economy? It's time to give something back to our community, support the local shops, farm shops, and produce markets as much as possible and continue to support them when they open as usual. I have been very disappointed with the quality of supermarket fruit and veg for some now. A classic example is a Savoy

32

cabbage. The large deep dark green, vitamin-rich outer leaves are perfect steamed, served with a little salted butter and black pepper. But wait, when did you last see a Savoy cabbage at a supermarket with the large dark green leaves? I can’t remember. What passes as a Savoy cabbage, nowadays, is a pathetic pale leaved little thing. So what's happened? The sorry little cabbage in the supermarket is old, so the dark green vitamin-rich leaves have been removed as they've deteriorated, leaving the heart of the cabbage. It's not news that the fruit and vegetables in our supermarkets have been

sprayed with wax, injected, chilled, and buffed to keep it 'looking' fresh and inviting (and to a lesser extent, fish and meat). But the glossy looking apples are just a show. The only benefit of buying fruit and veg from a supermarket is that we have access to foods outside our seasonal varieties, and everything is under one roof. But supermarket produce is often picked before they are ripe, which results in a loss of nutrients. Produce has travelled halfway around the world and is kept in cold storage long before it appears on the shelves, which is appalling for the environment. So much edible food is rejected to conform to strict size and

Grow your own

So what can we do? shape regulations. Why buy your produce from businesses with so little regard for the environment, waste, or your health? Buying local supports small businesses, creates employment, and your money stays local to be reinvested in the company and the community. Communities thrive with a variety of small independent retailers, but they need your support to grow. The produce is fresher, with reduced time between farm and plate (so lower carbon emissions, which is good for the environment), and food hasn't been preserved post picking. The fruit and vegetables have been picked at their optimal ripeness and thus retain most of the vital nutrients we need. If you can afford to buy organic, even better, farmers will have used no pesticides during growing.

Farmers Markets / Farm Shops / Street Markets

shrimps yum!), high quality, and free of added water and preservatives. Mostly the fruit and vegetables are from local farms. I love carrots and potatoes still covered in soil; taste trumps looks, you may get wonky two-legged carrots, and how fantastic is that! Eggs are as fresh as they can be. With large poly-tunnel enterprises, even 'exotic' fruit is starting to be grown in the UK.

Veg box schemes

If I had a smallholding, I would love to do this! Unfortunately, we don't all have acres of fertile land at our disposal, but it's worth contacting your council regarding the availability of allotments. But, fruit bushes grow very well in pots, and some types of fruit trees now produce a lot of fruit on a compact tree. Salad vegetables, potatoes, carrots, peas, green beans, courgettes, tomatoes, strawberries, and herbs are all easy to grow, in borders or pots. So what could you grow this year? It is easy and convenient to buy food from supermarkets, even when we know that much of the fresh produce is not as fresh as we would like. So, how about taking steps to buy at least some of your fresh food locally? You really will notice the taste difference, and you'll get a happy buzz knowing you are supporting the hard-working food producers in your local community.

Not all schemes are equal. There's at least one veg box company that hauls their produce the country's full length, so don't assume they provide local produce; ask where they source it. Expect seasonal vegetable products and some imported fruit.

Meat and fish will usually be locally sourced (Morecambe bay 34

Your Therapies My experience of Angelic Healing W

hen Debs initially asked me if I would be interested in experiencing angelic healing with Jennifer Bowns and then writing about it afterwards, I was both nervous and excited at the same time. The latter because I love anything to do with healing, and any excuse to lie down and relax. Nervous because I hadn’t written anything like this before, and since recently turning 50 my brain function isn’t quite what it was, so here goes. On the day of the Angelic healing, after being given very clear directions to Lindal-in-Furness (a quaint little village just past Ulverston and before Barrow), I found her house with ease. When parking I was met by a stunning house, something you normally see on a picture postcard, surrounded by beautiful big hedges and trees. As I approached, Jennifer was walking from her house to the bottom of her garden where I saw she had the most amazing garden therapy room nestled neatly inbetween trees and foliage. It looked so idyllic, and I couldn’t wait to get in. With its little wooden steps and cute windows letting in plenty of sunshine I was greeted by Jennifer’s beautiful smiling face and calming voice. She instantly made me feel at ease. I mentioned how wonderful the garden therapy room was and she explained that she and her husband had built it together and loved every minute. Jennifer is an Angelic Usui Reiki Master, and I was there to receive

an Angelic Healing Therapy Session which she describes as the “channelling of universal energies with divine messages, insights and positive perspectives from the Angels who help us with unconditional love. They are always willing to help and can only do so if we ask.” Each Angelic Therapy Session lasts 2 hours, including 40 minutes of hands-on channelling, history taking, angelic card reading and post session discussion. Each session is bespoke to every individual. We began with discussing my life and in this tranquil environment I found myself opening up and telling her all about events in my life, both good and bad. We found a connection through her previous job as a midwife and my experience of having 3 distressing pregnancies and births over the last 20 years. Her deep understanding resonated and only made me want to fully immerse myself into this therapy session. Just before I made myself comfortable, she asked me to choose a crystal from the windowsill and I was immediately drawn towards an amethyst which is said to be incredibly protective, healing and purifying. Once I laid down and placed the crystal on my heart chakra, I could hear the birds singing outside and the sun was shining through the window. I felt very peaceful and relaxed and ready for my wonderful healing session. The Angelic Healing consisted of her placing her hands just above my chakras starting with my crown at

the top of my head and working her way down through the seven chakras. I was aware of the heat from her hands although she wasn’t touching me and I felt completely relaxed, almost in a sleep like state, but aware of everything happening around me. I could feel the healing energy from her that she was channelling through my body. Throughout the session Jennifer also picked out 3 Angel Cards and described what the images meant. All had a personal meaning to me. After the healing and having a glass of water Jennifer went through what messages and experiences she had received during our time. All of these messages were personal to me and I felt made sense to my life. I would highly recommend Jennifer and Angelic Healing to anyone after my session. If you are anything like me, you will find yourself enlightened, energised, and fulfilled. Written by Kathryn Walker

Do you Struggle to Find Your Yin Yang Balance In Life?

E

ver felt stressed out and out of control in life? This is where there is too much happening in life (Yang) and we struggle to keep up. Ever had times where you’ve coped with way more happening but you’ve felt on top of it all? I can bet it’s because you’ve found a way of getting more rest and restorative time (Yin) between the high stress and activity (Yang). Yin and Yang are a part of each other, Yin creates Yang, which is why sleep and rest (Yin) creates energy for activity (Yang). We cannot know Yin without Yang being there. We would not know what night was, without the daytime to compare it to. This is about balance, the natural world tries to attain balance and so should we. At Tonic Acupuncture in Longridge, we look to observe our patients bodies, minds, lifestyle and diets to help you realise a better sense of balance. Acupuncture, fire cupping, massage, moxibustion and acupressure are just some of the many tools we use to unblock and balance the body, mind, and soul.

Your Family’s Health Supporting children to learn through movement and play

H

i, I'm Lucy, I work as a Rhythmic Movement Training (RMT) Consultant and I am the founder of Yoga on Paper (YOP). I am delighted to share how these can support your child’s well-being and learning.

How can RMT help you and your child? RMT is a primitive reflex integration program, which helps children develop and enhance their learning potential. I offer RMT in schools and 1-1 from my home in Lancaster. RMT benefits all ages from babies to adults. Children I have worked with have made improvements in many areas such as: handwriting, concentration, focus, sitting still, Maths and English, social anxiety, speech and language, communication skills, poor sleep patterns and emotional processing.

he was experiencing had taken over every aspect of his life. We have daily routines which incorporate massage, exercise and stillness. These have instilled an inner calm in him and allowed him to regain control. Physically and emotionally, he looks better. He leaves each session taller and happier (mother).” “seeing Lucy can help you with focusing, concentrating, and sleeping better (9-year-old boy)”

How a reflex can affect learning Primitive reflexes are our automatic survival actions, for example the baby hand grip (palmar grasp reflex). As I am sure you have noticed, babies naturally grip whatever touches their palm. The baby has no say in this! Once this natural grip action has been used many times, it goes to sleep (integrates), allowing the child to use their hands and fingers independently and at will. Watch them throw their toys out of the pram, just practicing! When a child learns to write, they need independent use of fingers to find a pincer grip. If their palm is still sensitive to touch, they may struggle to hold a pencil properly, making it tiring and awkward for them to write easily. RMT remedies this with massage and hand exercises, encouraging the reflex to finish its job. “Since starting RMT we have seen amazing changes with our 14-year-old son. The anxieties 44

Your Family’s Health

I created YOP alphabet cards to stimulate children’s natural cognitive skills, memory, and imagination, as well as their physical and sensory development. Each card contains an image and a letter of the alphabet. On the reverse is a story or verse from the Land of letters, plus actions to help children absorb the letter names and sounds. Making these a playful, complimentary resource for primary schools, early years settings and learning at home.

When we tap into a child’s natural creative talents, they become an enthusiastic learner! “Lucy’s cards have wonderful illustrations, the children especially enjoyed doing the actions, I would highly recommend using them. (Local nursery)”

W

orldwide, in 2018, there were an estimated 800,000 deaths by suicide, which is one person every 40 seconds (WHO, Preventing Suicide Summary, 2019). Many, many more attempt suicide. In the same year, there were 6,507 suicides registered in the UK (on average, 18 per day), (Office for National Statistics, 2019). On 10th October, 2018, World Mental Health Day, the Prime Minister appointed Britain’s first ever Suicide Prevention Minister, Jackie Doyle-Price. £1.8 million has been put aside for suicide prevention. This highlights the huge significance of this issue across the UK. In Cumbria, on average one person dies per week as a result of suicide (Cumbria Mental Health JSNA, 2016). Lancashire and South Cumbria had the 4th highest suicide rate in the country in 2014-2015 (Current Suicide Picture - Lancashire County Council, Sept 2017).

Action for Wellbeing is fundraising to open a respite house within the Morecambe Bay area designed specifically for those struggling with suicidal thoughts and feelings. If you wish to donate, please go our GofundMe page: (https://uk.gofundme.com/f/action-for-wellbeingcheyenne-gardner-crisis-house), or contact us directly via email at hello@actionforwellbeing.uk The Cheyenne Gardner Respite House will be named after a wonderful young woman who tragically took her life 4 years ago. Her family have already raised £6000 towards this project.

Action for Wellbeing (registered charity number 1179365) exists to reduce the number of suicides in South Cumbria and North Lancashire, to provide support to those considering suicide, and to those bereaved by suicide and/or impacted by suicide in any way. In August 2018, 100 local people completed an Action for Wellbeing survey anonymously. The results were startling. 76% of the respondents had experienced a mental health issue. 47% had contemplated suicide and 56% had been bereaved by suicide. Furthermore, a staggering 85% stated that there was not enough support in this locality for those contemplating suicide. Action for Wellbeing is unique in this area, as we provide the only local, dedicated 1 to 1 support service for those experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings. Volunteers provide weekly support for at least 6 months and are recruited from the local community. A number have had personal experience in caring for someone experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings. Indeed, this is often a motivating factor in their decision to volunteer with our charity. 48

We are Action for Wellbeing. We believe that one suicide is one too many. We are a registered charity that exists to reduce the number of suicides in South Cumbria and North Lancashire. We provide direct, individualised support to those experiencing suicidal thoughts and feelings, bereaved by suicide, and those impacted by suicide in any way. We have a dedicated team of volunteers and trustees who each have their own unique experience of suicide. 07568 704 638 hello@actionforwellbeing.uk www.actionforwellbeing.uk

Your Animal Wellbeing Keep Your Dogs Cool This Summer

ith more sunshine and warmer weather just around the corner (or so we hope!) it’s important to know how you can keep your canine chums safe as the temperatures rise.

panting, can only sweat from their paw pads, and most are covered in thick insulating furry coats! It’s not a combination that leads to naturally staying cool. Bearing those things in mind, it is crucial -and often life-savingto take extra care with your dogs during warmer spells, as vets up and down the UK see dogs suffering (sometimes fatally) from heatstroke every year without fail. Flat-nosed dogs (also known as brachycephalics) such as Pugs, Boston Terriers and Bulldogs

Dogs have a harder time coping with hot weather than we do for several reasons. Firstly, the average body temperature of a dog (and cat) is 38.5 degrees C- a whole degree higher than human core body temperatureso they already start off warmer than we are. Additionally, dogs can only lose body heat through

(British/French/American) are at higher risk due to the struggles they face with breathing compared with longer-nosed dogs, but any breed can unfortunately succumb to heatstroke.

Awareness and safety tips With a little thought and careful planning, there’s still plenty of fun to be had with your dogs this summer! Here’s a vet’s guide to keeping them “sun-safe”: 1). Never leave your dog in a parked car. Even just 10-15 mins is enough time for your dog to start to overheat, and it is immensely stressful for them. Avoiding longer car journeys is also advisable.

4). Before walking on pavement/road, test the tarmac by holding the back of your hand on it. If it is too hot for you, it is too hot for them to walk on. Paw pad burns are real!

2). Provide constant access to freshwater for drinking.

5). Keep them cool by ensuring they are in a shady spot (avoiding conservatories is recommended), providing a doggy paddling pool or game with the hosepipe, and/or some cooling treats (e.g. a stuffed frozen Kong).

3). Avoid walks during the hotter parts of the day- choose early morning or evening instead.

6). Apply pet-friendly sunscreen to sensitive areas such as bellies, groins, the skin around the nose, and tips of ears. White dogs or those with paler skin under their fur, and hairless breeds, are most at risk. 7). Monitor them for any signs of excessive panting, lethargy, vomiting or collapse. If you have any concerns contact your vet immediately as heatstroke is an emergency situation.

Your Business Business 2021 – 5 tips to Adapt and Survive Online by Deborah Monshin 2020 was a challenging year for small businesses, and 2021 seems to be going the same way. The saying 'hope for the best but plan for the worst' seems like good advice. What's worked for your business in the past may not work this year, particularly in industries like fitness, beauty and therapy. People are shopping online and using social media more than ever before. So what does that mean for businesses? We need to change how we engage with consumers. As a therapist, I usually work one to one. But I have now taken to offering online workshops. As an introvert, it's something I never thought I'd be doing, but I'm having fun!

How you can use the internet to support and grow your business: 1. Get a social media account. Every business should have an internet presence, even if only for advertising. Facebook is excellent for boosting your content, setting your target audience, and for live talks. Zoom is ideal for hosting workshops and demonstrations. Pinterest and Instagram are perfect for visual marketing for creators and artists. There's a lot of platforms, and at least one will suit your business.

3. If you cannot offer your existing products online, it's time to think outside the box.

2. Can you offer your current goods and services online or as a takeaway?

4. Can you create a booklet or E-book based on your knowledge to sell through your social media platform? They can be simple PDF files or published free through Amazon KDP.

Create an Etsy or Facebook shop for your products, and use Facebook Marketplace. Use online workshops for talking therapies, fitness classes, or for crafting and cooking. Group or individual sessions can be online. Either charge per session, consider a membership or run courses.

What aspect of your business can you tweak into an online option? Hairdresser: hairstyling demonstration or hair care product recommendations. Masseuse: a talk on the benefits of different massage oils, or a face massage workshop. Think knowledge sharing and 'how-to'.

5. Gift vouchers. Selling gift vouchers for future use gives people something to look forward to. Sell gift certificates for your online workshops and demonstrations.

Whatever you decide to do, have fun with it. Experiment, see what works. Because doing something is better than worrying about the future. Good luck! 52

Your HealthyFood and Drink Strong Immunity - The Key to Wellbeing

I

mmunity is a very hot topic at the moment - one that concerns all of us, however, it is my belief that if we have a fully functioning immune system, viruses and all other infections should not cause our bodies any problem. One of the key systems in the body involved with immunity is the gut - 80% of the immune system is based in the gut. Our

gut wall has a huge surface area which is thin and delicate, it needs to be thin so that we can absorb food through it, however, the downside is that it is easily damaged and food proteins can leak through into the bloodstream alerting the immune system. If the immune system is pre-occupied, it is then not concentrating on infections that may be invading the body. Things that can damage the gut wall are - antibiotics and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, excess sugar, gluten, and other grains, parasites, yeasts, and pathogenic gut bacteria and stress.

FIVE THINGS WE CAN DO TO KEEP OUR GUT HEALTHY 1. Feed the good bacteria eat leeks, onions, garlic, chickpeas, Jerusalem artichokes, sweet potato, chicory, apples. The more variety the better. 2. Eat fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, kombucha, and kefir - to help boost our good levels of bacteria. 3. Stop feeding the bad bacteria which thrive on sugar and refined carbohydrates - try to keep all carbohydrates like bread, pasta and rice as wholegrain as possible - a

high carbohydrate diet tends to feed the pathogenic bacteria. 4. Drink bone broth - this contains easily digestible proteins which can repair our gut wall - it is easy to make but you can also buy very good bone broth from Dr Gus nutrition https://www.drgusnutrition .co.uk 5. Try to be aware of your stress levels - if you are feeling overwhelmed, concentrate on your breathing - when we are stressed our breathing gets

fast and shallow - focus on slowing the breath and extending the out breath, in for 4 and out for 8, this calms the body. Keeping our gut wall strong is one of the greatest defences we have against infection. In addition, I always advise taking three key supplements to support immunity - Vitamin C, vitamin D, and Zinc. If you are interested in the above and want more help please read my book I WISH MY DOCTOR HAD TOLD ME THIS - there is more to our healing than medication.

Your Escape Why Retreat?

O

ur Lake District retreats are waiting to welcome you. Ask yourself, what good does it do a person who is out of balance, to amass a fortune, only to need to use the money to attempt to regain good health later in life? Let’s agree, we should all take time to retreat in order to create personal harmony while restoring balance. We are here to make restoring balance and soulful connection a reality, surrounded by mountains in the heart of the beautiful English Lake District. Being in balance means your health & wellbeing should be your number 1 priority. We know for most people that all too often this is not the case because of the stresses and challenges we face in our daily lives. So think of spending time in charming settings, walking in enchanted woods, with Lakeland views, nutritious colourful food, walks in nature, transformational talks, rejuvenating sessions, and peaceful relaxation. Building balance in your mental, emotional and spiritual life needs to be given preferential

attention, and one way to achieve this is by attending one or more of our retreats. We offer a variety of retreats including meditation, and breathwork, as well as, our total resonance stays. All of our retreats are held in the beautiful Lake District (UK) and are led by Sam and Greg. Each has a unique offering that will help you to enhance certain qualities. Whether you are looking for self-confidence, deep relaxation, stress relief, spiritual growth, or even ways to become

more successful in your relationships or in business, there will be a course for you. The retreats that we offer have been uniquely designed to accommodate a variety of aspirations and individually target the most sought-after skills in personal development.

We look forward to helping you find your place of sanctuary. St Catherine’s Cottage, Patterdale Road, Windermere LA23 1NH Visit our website www.stcatherinesretreats.com or call Sam on 07885 480303 for more details 56

Your Spa Retreat De-stress with a holistic escape at the North Lakes Hotel and Spa

P

erhaps more than ever, the events of 2020 have shown us just how important our health, fitness, and wellness really are. But although the benefits – both physical and mental – of exercise and eating a healthy diet have been widely documented, many of us have been pretty sedentary during the lockdown, especially given the limits around going out, gyms closing and the general stresses and strains it entailed, from working at home to being without childcare and unable to see or support loved ones. However, now things are starting to ease and people have a bit more freedom, it’s the perfect moment to focus on our health and wellness, inside and out. From getting pampered to losing a few pounds, escaping to a spa retreat could be just what you need to get ready for summer. As a working mum with children I only know too well about the stresses of daily living and I was so delighted when I was offered

the chance to go along to the North Lakes Spa for a pamper day. I was totally impressed by the Spa and on arrival my friend and I were given fresh white robes and slippers and taken to a beautiful room where we could chill and relax before our Pamper Experience. I opted for the Caudalie Cranial Massage which incorporated their signature Caudalie (a most beautiful French skincare brand). The therapist used an awardwinning divine oil that combined subtle notes of honeyed ginger, neroli, orange blossom, white musk, and jasmine. The relaxing blended oil with the gentle massage technique helped to de-stress my tired and aching neck and shoulders and stimulated my senses.

Sparkling Summer Spa Offer Experience an unrivalled level of luxury and book your treatment today.

This massage simultaneously stimulates reactions in the whole body, helping to rebalance the energies of the nervous system. The flowing massage worked deep into where I had tension and I left feeling reboosted and full of energy. We then spent a delightful couple of hours in the stunning swimming pool for a refreshing dip. featuring a warming sauna, a bubbly whirlpool, and a steam room for deep breathing. The North Lakes Spa helps to soothe away the stresses of modern-day living and reaping the benefits of taking the time out with their fabulous Caudalie Spa treatments.
