A year on from the launch of her online business, The Atelier World, we reconnected with Michelle Payne to chat about her dedication to all things designer and discover the magic (and investment power) of pre-loved As a seasoned buyer and seller of pre-loved luxury, Michelle knew that she could utilise her marketing communications and customer service experience to create this exciting female-founded venture and provide a pre-loved portal that not only delivered the designer goods (at competitive prices) but served up an unbeatable, boutique-esque customer experience and created a unique community where connoisseurs of luxury could share the label love. North-West-based Atelier allows people to buy, sell and even swap luxury designer items from an endless list of iconic names and labels. It’s a veritable sartorial candy store – a feast for the eyes and filled with delicious fashion treats. We couldn’t wait to find out how this one-stop shop for exquisite bags, shoes, clothing and accessories was developing... Hi, Michelle! How’s the first year of business been? We’ve grown so quickly! Our client base has skyrocketed and we now have buyers and sellers from right across the globe. Client relationships seem very important to you, this isn’t just a ‘click, buy, goodbye’ service? Most def initely not. For me, it's about giving people the best experience; everything from initial communication and payment through to wrapping items beautifully and building lasting client relationships. Is there a typical Atelier customer? There really isn't! We have everyone from first-time buyers to serious collectors. What’s been lovely is the creation of a community of Atelier friends, people who are so incredibly passionate about luxury items, and not in a ‘status’ or ‘show-offy’ way – they just appreciate their beauty and have, until now, had nowhere to share that excitement and enthusiasm. Pre-loved fashion is big news right now, your timing was impeccable... Definitely the right time, the right place! In the past few years, I think the whole perception of the pre-loved industry has completely changed. Now, those who buy pre-loved really own it, people are proud to

say, ‘I bought this pre-loved’. A recent article in Forbes stated that in 2019, the secondhand/consignment market ‘expanded 21 times faster than conventional apparel commerce did’. Covid has had a big, big impact too. I think we are becoming more conscious of how we’re spending. People are also realising that designer items, when cared for well, can prove great investments for the future. In fact, our tagline is ‘luxury doesn’t have a timespan’. How quickly can items rise in price? I bought a Hermès Kelly handbag in Christmas 2019 and could sell this on the resale market for significantly higher (not that I would!). that are really rare, a part of fashion history. More importantly, everything has a story and that’s something me and a lot of others are so passionate about. For example, we’ve just had a big consignment from a very famous ‘90s supermodel. Can I tell you who she is? Sorry, no! We sign non-disclosure agreements with many of our clients. Confidentiality and trust are so important to us.

We love how enthusiastic you are about the stories behind the styles... Oh, I really am! Recently, a lady sold the first Chanel handbag she ever bought (she’d had it twenty years) to a girl buying her first-ever Chanel handbag. I just love that! It’s really special. And, of course, pre-loved is great news for the planet? Pre-2020, there’d been such a rise in fast, throwaway fashion. According to charity Wrap,

around 140 million pounds’ worth of clothing is sent to UK landfills every year! That’s astonishing. But now, there’s a distinct shift away from such high levels of consumption, people are seeing that investing in quality fashion works out less cost per wear. We’ve got a long way to go, but we’re moving in the right direction. We’re about to launch a campaign #ShopYourWardrobe – people pledging to wear nothing but clothes they already own for a week. We also work with a charity called Smart Works, which repurposes fashion in a very positive way.

Finally, can you share what’s new for 2022? We’ll be growing the team, developing the buying side of the business and investing in new technologies... there’s a lot of exciting stuff on the horizon! Watch this space.

Variety, the Children’s Charity, Legends of Industry Awards honour and celebrate people who have achieved outstanding success in their chosen field of business and industry whilst raising crucial funds to support sick, disabled and disadvantaged children and young people. In the UK, there are more than 1.3 million disabled children and young people and nearly 4 million children living in poverty. Variety, the Children’s Charity, is dedicated to improving the lives of these children. The charity’s help includes grants for specialist disability equipment and wheelchairs that aren’t available through statutory services; adapted, accessible transport for SEND schools and other non-prof it organisations through its Sunshine Coaches programme; and memorable day trips through its Great Days Out programme.

Business leading lights and celebrities from the worlds of TV and radio broadcasting, dance, music, comedy, the culinary arts and elite international sport were in Manchester to receive their Variety, the Children’s Charity, Legends of Industry Awards. This year’s honours list included commercial property entrepreneur Richard Ainscough, New Strictly Come Dancing judge Anton Du Beke, Grammy-nominated music industry hit-maker Mike Chapman, restaurant and hospitality innovator Karina Jadhav (Menagerie, Manchester), music and TV personalities The Nolans, veteran broadcaster Tony Blackburn, charity champion and first-ever recipients of a Local Legends of

Industry Award, Manzoor and Aiysha Ali, and James Martin. Paralympian rower Lauren Rowles MBE and comedic alter-ego character Keith Lemon also received a Legends of Industry Award, but were unable to attend the evening. Variety, the Children’s Charity, Development Director for the North West, Lyn Staunton, said: “We are deeply honoured to bestow awards upon some of the finest people who achieved so much in their chosen careers. from Andalucía Absolutely loving my new life in Andalucía Especially as Christmas seems to have come rather early for me this year When we moved to Spain, I was sure my happiness would come from waking up to blue skies every day and discovering all that this amazing country has to offer. But I cannot lie. My new-found bliss is down to two things. Two rather buff, ripped, young things. Their names: Juan and Javier. Bad Lady Muck. Allow me to explain. Remember when I mistakenly rented 2,500 square metres of land near Casares? Yep, that cock up. One of my most impressive, even if I say so myself. Turns out that’s rather a lot of land. Three and a half football pitches, to be

exact. Something Lord Muck has found hilarious; even more annoyingly, he has refused to help, opting instead to head to Finca Cortesin for a round of golf most days. So, what’s a girl to do? Hire help, obviously. Young, buff, ripped, tanned help; my landlord’s great-nephew Juan and his equally gorgeous amigo Javier. Both 25-year-olds are trying to make it big as kite surfers in Tarifa, but as they grew up on farms, they leapt at the chance to earn a bit of extra cash three afternoons a week working for La Extrana Dama Inglesa aka ‘The Strange English Lady’. A little arrangement I seem to have somehow forgotten to tell Lord Muck about. Oops. Much to his Lordship’s puzzlement, for the past month, I have stopped nagging him to help. Instead, on the days when the boys are due, I leap out of bed with a spring in my step, hopping into my ancient VW and singing my little heart out as I wind my way up to my land. I spend the morning merrily picking pomegranates and dates, weeding my zanahorias (carrots), tending my newly planted espinacas (spinach) and sowing lechugas (lettuces), but all the time, I’m watching the gate,

waiting like a giddy schoolgirl for my kite surfers to arrive at 2pm. And weirdly, quite a few of my girlfriends have suddenly got hooked on grow-your-own too, joining me most days now, lip glosses at the ready as Juan and Javier’s campervan comes up the drive. It really doesn’t help that with temperatures still in the seventies, the first thing the guys do is take off their t-shirts, then get to work, wielding their tools, bare-chested, Poldark-scything style. Which leaves us sad, old birds weak at the knees, hearts racing, fanning ourselves under the shade of my avocado trees as we proceed to drool particularly unattractively. And I have to say, they have done a fine job. On the land. Not just on our libidos. One football pitch has been cleared, ready for my grapevines to be planted, the stone compost areas are built and the hedgerows pruned. And his Lordship is none the wiser. Or so I thought. But through my binoculars, that’s definitely his Range Rover I spy coming up the mountain. And he appears to have that suspicious look on his face, the one he wore when he’d rumbled that my sudden interest in swimming coincided with the men’s water polo team’s training sessions. Right. Must dash. Need to get them back into their clothes at least…

We live in a beautiful part of the world. Here's some ideas for getting outside and exploring it

BOULDERING FOR BEGINnERS A British winter, even the milder ones we tend to get round these parts, may not seem like the ideal conditions for outdoor rock climbing, however, climbing relies a lot on friction and when the temperature is colder, the friction is better, so even a beginner can get out on the rocks. Bouldering is a great way to get into the sport. Given that it usually involves heights of less than 20ft, it doesn’t require as much technical equipment as rock climbing and is safe, provided you learn how to fall onto crash mats correctly. Here in the North West, we are never far from an indoor climbing wall, club or specialist shop where you can find experts for advice on where and when to get outdoors. Ellis Brigham on Manchester’s Deansgate is a good start. Staff there are friendly and knowledgeable and can tell you the best spots less than an hour from town and when groups are heading out.

FOREST SCHOoL

I’ve always been determined to bring up my three daughters to be wild and adventurous lovers of the outdoors and I’m delighted to say that even before school age, they are all hooked on camping, exploring and getting mucky in all weathers. For that reason, we’re all big fans of Forever Wild Forest School, whose highly trained and fully insured leaders hold sessions at Didsbury Sports Ground and Wilmslow’s Pownall Hall School. Since my kids were old enough to walk, they’ve been attending these gatherings regularly throughout the year and enjoying the really well-thought-out menu of nature activities, ranging from foraging and crafts to shelter building and (highly supervised) making campfire snacks. Forever Wild also does birthday parties and having held one for a toddler one crisp, clear winter’s day, I can confirm that every child and parent finished the day a Forever Wild convert.

Why family values are Gemma’s personal motivator to give her clients the best possible service It was the unplanned birth of her son, Josh, at the age of 18 that changed Gemma’s life forever “Sadly, the relationship with my partner had broken down,” explains Gemma. “Fortunately, my mum stepped in, initially supporting me financially and emotionally, helping me to cope with this abrupt change to my life direction. It meant I was able to complete my education while Josh was happily ensconced at nursery.” By 2004, at the age of 23, Gemma had taken the first step of her career, joining Northern Rock as a trainee mortgage adviser. “My choice of a career in financial services came from a time when I’d helped a friend who was heavily in debt; on credit cards and loans, all with really high interest rates. I worked out a way for him to consolidate everything onto one loan and save a significant amount of interest. It set me off on my career path. I’d really enjoyed the process; it gave me a great boost to think I’d turned it around. He still had the debt, but it was far more manageable.” Gemma says bringing up Josh as a single mum, while financially supporting them both, wasn’t easy. “Josh was diagnosed with the neurodevelopment disorder ADHD in primary school, which meant managing his behaviour was challenging to say the least. His inability to focus, alongside occasional bizarre, impulsive behaviour, meant attracting unwanted attention from those who made me self-conscious about the fact I was such a young mum.” She continues: “I must admit to feeling paranoid at times, believing people were constantly judging me for what I perceived to be thought of as an irresponsible young mum. This gave me the determination to succeed and provide Josh with not just a safe, loving home, but also a secure financial future.” Gemma’s career notched up a gear when she joined RBS as a financial planning manager in 2006. Caring for Josh meant she’d been unable to go on to university, so she was determined to become chartered. The next five years was spent studying in her spare time, taking exams while simultaneously gaining hands-on experience across all areas of wealth management. “I left RBS in 2011 to join Wesleyan,” says Gemma, “initially specialising in offering comprehensive financial advice for lawyers, including

their personal and business planning. Later, I added to my specialisms by providing advice to doctors working within the NHS and in private practice. I also worked as an adviser at both Towry and Prudential to gain more experience. "After so many years of head-down working, studying and caring for Josh, you can’t imagine the sense of pride and achievement I felt when I was able to move out of our flat and buy my f irst detached house in Manchester for us both. “In April 2018, I founded Darcy Financial Planning Ltd, with an amazing team behind me. My focus is on financial lifestyle planning and guiding my clients towards their financially secure future. “This year, I hit the grand age of 40 – and Josh, 22 – with the financial goals I set for myself all those years ago now achieved. We’ve come a long way together, Josh and I, much of the journey at times difficult and challenging, but I am so very proud of the young man he has become.” Gemma continues: “What I’ve gained from the experience has been extremely beneficial. It’s shown me just how people's lives can take them down a vastly different route to the one they envisaged, but that it’s not the end of the world.” Having experienced so much throughout her journey so far, Gemma loves that she is now able to empathise and relate one hundred percent to whatever her clients are going through: “I derive so much pleasure helping my clients find solutions that work for them so they can look positively into the future.” And what about Gemma personally? “Well I have, of course, set myself new financial goals, this time with built-in flexibility to enjoy a healthy work-life balance. I now give myself space to breathe, to do the things I love and to spend time with my family and friends. After all, planning a quality lifestyle is crucial.”

The event, which has taken place at the Concorde Conference Centre for a number of years, was made up of two separate experiences. During the day, the charity hosted an inspirational fashion show accompanied by an exquisite afternoon tea before the venue was transformed to deliver a glamourous gala dinner in the evening. Both events were headlined by the charity’s ambassador, Rick Astley, who performed alongside his full band in the evening. Following the event, Margo Cornish, the event organiser, said: “We were so pleased with the organisation and quality of the service provided at our Maggie’s on the Runway events. It is no mean feat producing two large events back-to-back on the same day at the same venue, but the support we got f rom the team was excellent. Charlotte in particular provided great communication and customer service from start to finish. Supersonic Sunday October 2021 Utilising The Hangar’s generous floor space and easy access, the Supercar Driver Dinner showcased several supercars at their Supersonic Sunday event, including the McLaren F1. A delicious two-course meal was served underneath the Concorde’s wings and a stage was set up by the front wheel, which featured an interview with the original 'Stig' from BBC’s Top Gear. In addition, an exhibition area was set up for Berry’s Jewellers as well as two racing simulators and a retro Scalextric track set up for guests to test their speed! A Christmas dinner that’ll steal the show Food editor, stylist and author Angela Boggiano and her photographer husband, Craig Robertson, owners of At The Kitchen in Cheadle Hulme, share their Christmas menu A delicious sharing menu that still has all the flavours of Christmas but cooked and prepped differently. A light and crunchy salad starter, herby, garlic-filled rolled turkey breast, simple sides and a great alternative Christmas pudding. This is the perfect menu for those looking for something a little different this year. 4. To assemble the salad, arrange slices of beetroot between four serving plates along with the red chicory leaves and grapefruit segments. Scatter with the crumbled Cheshire cheese and toasted pecans and drizzle with the balsamic juices from the roasting tin.

Roast Tuscan turkey with herby garlic filling A great alternative to the usual Christmas turkey roast. Ask your butcher to butterfly the turkey breast.

Roast beetroot, ruby grapefruit and Cheshire cheese salad with candied pecans Keep it light and tasty for starters with this delicious salad, which has a wonderful combination of textures and flavours. Serves 4 400g fresh beetroot, washed 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 100g pecan halves 2 tbsp caster sugar 1 ruby grapefruit, cut into segments 2 heads red chicory, broken into separate leaves 150g Cheshire cheese, crumbled

1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Place the washed beetroot in a small roasting tin. Drizzle over the oil and balsamic and a sprinkling of salt and ground black pepper and cover with foil. Place in the oven and bake for 45 minutes until completely tender when pierced with a small, sharp knife. Set aside to cool completely. 2. Whilst the oven is on, place the pecan halves on a baking tray and sprinkle with the caster sugar and a pinch of salt. Toast in the oven for five to eight minutes until crunchy and toasted. 3. When the beetroot is completely cooled, remove the skin and slice thinly.

Serves 6 30g salted butter, softened 25g flat leaf parsley 2 tbsp fresh sage 2 sprigs fresh rosemary 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 tbsp fennel seeds 1 pinch chilli flakes 1.2kg turkey breast, trimmed & butterflied 12 slices smoked bacon rashers 2 tbsp olive oil 200ml white wine 300ml chicken stock 150g black grapes 1. Place the butter, herbs, garlic, fennel seeds and chilli in a bowl with a pinch of salt and ground black pepper and mash all together well. 2. Lay out the turkey breast skin-side down and spread the herby garlic butter over the surface. Roll up tightly and wrap the smoked bacon rashers evenly around the outside of the roll and secure tightly with kitchen string. Place in a roasting tin and drizzle the top with the olive oil. 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Pour the wine and chicken stock in the bottom of the roasting tin,

RECIPE cover with foil loosely and roast for about one hour. Remove the foil and roast for a further 30 minutes until the bacon is golden and crispy. Add the grapes 15 minutes before the end of cooking. 4. Transfer the joint to a carving board and leave to rest for about 20 minutes covered with foil. 5. Slice the turkey into thin slices and serve with the pan juices and roasted grapes.

Celeriac & potato gratin This is perfect served alongside the roast. Simply place in the oven at the same time as the rolled turkey and both will be ready to serve together. Serves 6 420ml double cream 300ml milk 1tbsp Dijon mustard 600g waxy, red-skinned potatoes, peeled & thinly sliced 1 small celeriac (about 500g), peeled & thinly sliced 100g mature Cheddar cheese, grated 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Mix together the cream, milk and mustard in a large jug with a pinch of salt and ground black pepper. 2. Place a layer of potatoes in a 1.2-litre, ovenproof gratin dish. Pour over a little of the cream mixture and then sprinkle with some cheese. Top with a layer of celeriac and then repeat with the cream mixture and cheese. Continue until all the potatoes, celeriac and cream mixture are layered up.

beautifully with the Brussel sprouts. Serves 6 500g Brussel sprouts, halved 2 tbsp olive oil 1 large red onion, finely chopped 150g fresh cranberries 2 tbsp balsamic vinegar 1. Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil and cook the Brussel sprouts for just five minutes. Drain well. 2. Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the parboiled Brussel sprouts and cook for 10-15 minutes, tossing occasionally until lightly browned. 3. Add the cranberries and cook for a further five minutes until they burst and soften. Season with a pinch of salt and a sprinkling of ground black pepper. Drizzle with the balsamic vinegar and toss well. Serve immediately.

Spiced sticky ginger and apple cake with salted toffee sauce This is a warm, sticky ginger and toffee cake, which makes a great alternative to Christmas pudding – the whole family will love it.

Serves 6 200g butter, softened 200g soft brown sugar 275g plain flour 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp ground ginger 3 large free-range eggs 300ml milk 6 tbsp ready-made salted toffee sauce 2 eating apples, cored & finely sliced 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C/fan 160°C/gas 4. Grease and line the base of a 23cm square cake tin. Put the butter in a large bowl with the sugar, then beat well with an electric whisk until light, pale and creamy. Add the flour, baking powder, ground ginger, eggs and milk and mix well. 2. Drizzle the base of the tin with four tbsp of the toffee sauce. Then lay the sliced apples over the top in the base of the tin. Pour the cake mix over the apples and then bake for 35-40 minutes until golden and cooked. To test, insert with a skewer and if it comes out clean, it is cooked. 3. Allow to cool slightly, then turn out so the apples are uppermost. Peel off the paper, cut into squares and then serve warm with the remaining toffee sauce and scoops of ice cream.

William Lees-Jones – keeping brewing perfection in the family Managing Director of J.W. Lees Brewery since 2003, genial William Lees-Jones leads the Middleton-based business that his ancestor John Lees founded and built as Greengate Brewery in 1828. J.W. Lees’ cosy, oak-paneled boardroom, originally John’s dining room, has overseen 190 years of challenges as well as lighter moments, including hosting TV location shoots, Julie Goodyear’s casting as Corrie’s Bet Lynch and doubtless many, many more. Surrounded by paintings of their forebears, William and the majority fifth and sixth generation board of directors understand their legacy, their communal responsibilities and their need for cohesion. In fact, it was the fear of dissension that, in 1955, motivated William’s grandfather to buy out the rest of the family. This prompted William’s father, Richard, 25 and midway through his accountancy training, and his chartered surveyor uncle, Christopher, to then join their father. It’s all hands on deck at the family’s amicable, top-down Greengate Brewery. Even aficionados start at the bottom – sweeping up, ‘mashing’ the beer in a kettle-like device and driving the dray. Now in their late 80s, both 1950s’ Lees-Jones recruits were the first Northerners permitted by the London Brewers Company to wear the Master Brewers’ chains of office for their portraits hanging in the boardroom. Ultimately, the clan’s diverse abilities, its mutual support and collaborative outlook have helped maintain product excellence, sure-footed, careful company expansion and ongoing employee care and development. Small wonder J.W. Lees now ranks in the UK’s top ten breweries. Classics graduate William, after 10 years in advertising in London, returned up north in 1994. Married to southerner Ariel, the father of four and High Sheriff of Cheshire during 2012 recalls: “There was no pressure to join the business. In fact, I’d always considered people working for a family firm probably were unable to find a job anywhere else! I knew I had to prove to myself, that I could do this thing called ‘life’ independently before coming back.”

Now approaching its bicentenary, J.W. Lees has reinvented itself over the last two decades. Despite Covid’s devastating impact on the entire hospitality sector, the company, via generous government aid, has avoided closing any hostelries. The business – which incorporates J.W. Lees Brewery, J.W. Lees Pubs and Willoughby’s Wine Merchants – has historically served a predominantly North Manchester clientele, but now owns 146 higher quality establishments throughout the North West and North Wales, from Preston down to Holyhead, employs 1,400 staff and makes two thirds of its promotions internally. Determined to retain its personal family touch, each year, J.W. Lees looks to buy and also sell half a dozen pubs – not ‘en masse’ but one at a time. Topping the J.W. Lees acquisition list are its trio of prestigious hotels –the Alderley Edge Hotel, The Stanneylands in Wilmslow and the Trearddur Bay Hotel on Anglesey. And watch out for the impending Aviator development to be built on the site of Woodford’s former aerodrome. Both William and cousin Michael, a Bass-trained master brewer, work full-time at Greengate. "Family businesses are about the long term and hoping our decisions can stand the test of time,” says William. “We re-opened in April and are moving from survival mode into getting through this winter and resetting the business. Our pubs are clean and safe. I do believe that because people have been cooped up, they are ready and willing to come back to us.” Interestingly, despite the loss of EU workers, product shortages, transport problems, the high price of British wines and lack of French imports, Covid struck even deeper than Brexit. But determined to avoid turning their ‘Dynasty into a Dallas’, William concludes: ‘We’ve always worried – especially during the pandemic – that we’ll be the generation to ‘turn the lights off’.” The innovative, self-aware Lees-Jones family is committed to ensuring nothing could be further from the truth.

What to do if you get injured on the slopes This 2021/2022 ski season, more than a million Britons will leave the UK and head to the slopes to take part in skiing and snowboarding. Whilst these sports are exhilara ng and provide excellent exercise, they can be dangerous and accidents do occur, even when you take all the necessary precau ons. More than a 1,000 UK residents get injured every day during the snow season, with sprains, fractures and breaks extremely common, and OrthTeam consultants regularly provide medical advice to many of these pa ents overseas and expedite treatment once they are back home. I've had my L5S1 (lumbosacral joint) removed via a full lumbar fusion, however, I still suffer from sciatica pain. Do I need a scan? Around 80 to 90% of patients undergoing any form of lumbar spinal surgery for leg pain (sciatica) experience significant improvement in this symptom. Persistent leg pain does warrant further investigation with a clinical examination by a specialist and post-operative imaging such as an X-ray and MRI scan. Following a fall whilst running, I can’t put pressure on my knee, what could be the issue?

I feel a burning pain down the back of my calf and ankle, is this a cause of concern?

It all depends on the mechanism and severity of injury. A fall with a minor blow to the front of the knee can result in bone bruising or minor cartilage damage to the patella (kneecap). These usually cause pain for a few weeks but then settle. If they don’t, then seek the advice of a knee surgeon.

These symptoms certainly warrant assessment and could indicate a trapped nerve in the lumbar spine and require an assessment by a specialist.

Start a little at a time with something familiar. Try using meat alternatives instead of meat once a week in a main meal. It will taste just as delicious and be better for you and the planet.

Education News Alderley Edge School for Girls receives national award nomination

Alderley Edge School for Girls (AESG) is celebrating after being nationally recognised for its mental health and wellbeing support for students and staff by being shortlisted for an award f rom the Independent Schools Association. AESG has been named as a finalist in the category for Excellence and Innovation in Mental Health and Wellbeing, with the winner being announced in November. This shortlisting came after judges were impressed with the forward-thinking and proactive approach to both pupil and staff wellbeing throughout the last academic

year. Judges were also impressed at the innovative projects implemented throughout the pandemic that helped support pupils and staff to be more resilient, reduce anxiety levels and promote a positive work-life balance.

Alongside these programmes, the whole school participated in Mental Health Awareness Week and Children's Mental Health Awareness Week, supplemented by a challenge to maintain their physical fitness by virtually running from AESG to New York.

These innovative projects were implemented across the school from Early Years to Sixth Form, allowing each girl to benefit from a tailored programme of support. The Early Years Team identified experiences no longer possible outside of school and sought to run them as part of their school day instead. This approach saw the youngest girls take part in ‘Heritage Days’, which promoted family life and aided social interaction, as well as enjoying virtual birthday parties. The Junior School used ‘MyHappyMind’ and ‘Twinkle’ programmes to introduce students to the importance of mental health and wellbeing.

Speaking on the success of the award nomination, Headmistress Nicola Smillie said: “I am thrilled that our school has been nominated for such a prestigious award. At AESG, promoting positive mental health and wellbeing is at the forefront of our minds. As the girls have returned to school this academic year, we have continued with our wellbeing initiatives.”

Senior girls took part in weekly yoga sessions and enjoyed weekly assemblies and time for reflection with the School Chaplin, which allowed everyone to pause from their learning and take time to think about their own mental health and the wellbeing of their classmates.

First Year adventures at Stockport Grammar sporty, musical, dramatic, thoughtful, competitive, curious, caring or creative, there is something to inspire them. Pupils were encouraged to find an activity that they liked and sign up for it. The adventurous pupils then headed off for the SGS annual residential trip to Ilam Youth Hostel in the beautiful Peak District, where they visited Chatsworth House, went hiking around Dovedale and took part in games and activities to develop teamwork and communication skills. First Year pupils at Stockport Grammar School (SGS) have enjoyed an actionpacked start to the academic year, making new friends, getting to know their teachers and exploring some of the extensive co-curricular opportunities on offer. Prior to the start of term, the school welcomed the First Years and their parents for an

Louise Higson Headmistress at Lady Barn House School my career in a boys’ state grammar school and entered the independent sector in Milan, teaching kindergarten children to late teens for three years. Your views and intentions? Education is ever-changing. Nearly 150 years ago, Lady Barn School's founder, William Herford, trailblazed co-education in preparatory schools. I believe that a forward-thinking attitude must be maintained so that each child can embark on their own journey of discover y, opportunity and success. Our curriculum and numerous extracurricular facilities must remain challenging and updated and the children’s voices must be heard, hence our four school councils. Another hurdle out of the way was last week’s long-overdue compliance and educational quality inspection... on 24 hours’ notice! Now, we can get on with all the exciting things we plan to do this year. Looking ahead to next year and responding to demand, we plan to extend our nursery provision and intake so more children can take advantage of our bespoke early years environment.

King's clocks up netball successes After a series of dominant displays in the preliminary rounds, The King's School under-16 team drew on their collective team spirit to bag the extra-time winner against The Grange. Tied 13-13 after normal time in a gripping end-to-end encounter in which no quarter was given or taken, King's looked on their last legs when brave Aimee fell foul of a puncture wound to her knee. However, as she was being treated on the sidelines, Madi took dead aim to score the winning goal. The King's team had been the powerhouse of the tournament, beating Upton 10-4, Wilmslow High 12-3, Fallibroome 13-7, King's Chester 21-2 and Alderley Edge School for Girls 13-7 in the semifinal.

King's netballers brought home the Cheshire County Cup after a thrilling final, which was won with a golden goal from hotshot Madi Baxter, who drew strength from a late injury to her teammate Aimee Venables to bag the win.

With England Netball Roses Academy U17 National Academy star Lydia Hine leading from the front in defence, Loughborough Lightning's Madi Baxter on form in attack and Cheshire County players’ Minty Kight and Aimee Venables to the fore, King's U16 is a formidable unit.

Manchester High School for Girls’ commitment to sustainability encouraging teachers to turn off lights and screens at the end of each lesson. Senior pupils regularly use their wellbeing sessions to investigate environmental issues and last month, students in Year 8 come off-timetable for an Eco Day, during which they debated climate change and planted shrubs to create cleaner air. It is not just older pupils who are passionate about the planet. Last year, children in the Prep Department launched their own Eco Code, encouraging the community to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’. Saturday Night Fever 25-29 January Opera House This was a great movie and it is a great stage show too. It has an amazing Bee Gees soundtrack –including, of course, Stayin’ Alive, How Deep Is Your Love and More Than a Woman – and terrific dance scenes and plenty of drama.

ICONIC IONIQ

The rapid rise of electric vehicles (EVs) has been exciting for so many reasons, not least for the sake of ensuring a future world for our children to inhabit. But as well as the environmental necessity of the change from internal combustion to cleaner alternatives, there have also been massive social and economic changes from this giant industry, which has rapidly risen to take over the car world. But this isn’t an article for The Economist. I write this page about motoring because I have a very simplistic love for the shapes and aesthetics of cars. Like many car enthusiasts, I have always seen cars through the eyes of a child – fascinated by the feelings and experiences they evoke. From that perspective then, EVs are exciting because they have ushered in an entire new design language. The craft and skill of car designers is an awe-inspiring thing. To those of us not in the profession, we might instinctively know a lot about a car just by looking at it, but we might lack the language to explain how. The best example of this is the fact that you can spot most EVs a mile off, just by their futuristic shapes and visual cues. Think about it: Mercedes’ EQ range just looks different to normal Mercedes. They have their own distinctive shapes. Same with BMW’s i Series.

And you don’t need to count the exhaust pipes (or lack of) on a Porsche to tell the electric Taycan from the rest of the range. When I first saw the electric Hyundai IONIQ 5, my jaw dropped. Historically, Hyundai and other Korean brands have been marketed to us Europeans as an affordable, reliable and economical alternative to more expensive Western brands and their visual styling told that story. They looked accessible, unthreatening and the opposite of exclusive. Nothing wrong with that, but it seldom excited the car snob. This, however, throws all that out the window. It screams ‘premium’ from every angle, with bold shapes straight out of science fiction, such as the aggressive slashes down the flanks and the uncompromising square headlamps under the furrowed brow of the bonnet line. As Hyundai has proudly stated, this marks a totally fresh design direction for the brand, and I think it works. The confident visual statement is backed up in every way; the car is winning awards left, right and centre for everything from handling to interior space. Even more intriguingly, we’re told the IONIQ 5 is just the beginning. 6 and 7 are in the pipeline and promise to shake things up even more.
