From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.
Board of Directors amashburnscov@gmail.com What I’ve Learned After 10 Months on the Board by Allan Mashburn Kathy and I have a wonderful time living in SCOV. We have met many wonderful people and experienced their hospitality and warmth. Between the two of us, we are members of and serve in a number of capacities for various clubs. We are busy and having fun and have been doing this for seven winter seasons. In addition, I have served on the SCOV Board for the past 10 months. The clubs and Board have a lot in common. They exist so that we, the residents of SCOV, can have enjoyment, a sense of purpose and commonality. To make all of this work, it takes people. I am amazed at the quality of people in our community and the willingness that they have to provide their time, knowledge, experience and abilities to make our community function now and in planning for the future. Like any community, we don’t always agree with each other. We are rarely like a team of horses that pull the wagon in a common direction. There are those that envision a different path. And we, as a community, need to listen to them, because we don’t have all the answers, and there is a lot still to learn. It is incumbent on all of us to be approachable and listen with a sense of openness. As Stephen Covey once said, “The biggest communication problem is we do not listen to understand, we listen to reply.” While Kathy and I owned our bookstore we always stocked Robert Fulghum’s All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. If you haven’t read it in a while, it’s worth reviewing. There are lessons that we learned early in life that are important throughout life. As Robert Fulghum said: “Think what a better world it would be if we all–the whole world–had cookies and milk about three o’clock every afternoon and then lay down... for a nap... And it is still true, no matter how old you are–when you go out into the world, it is best to hold hands and stick together.”

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Support Our Board Members In the arena of community management, we see many different types of people. That is neither good nor bad, just different. The past couple of years we have watched the world change. It is no longer strange to see a person wearing a mask in a bank. We no longer have shelves completely stocked in the grocery store. The cheapest piece of 2x4x8 foot framing lumber I could find is now $6.25 compared with $.98 a few short years ago. People have gone from being so concerned with Covid that they worked from home and rarely went out, to going back out on a regular basis even though the nightly news reports increasing amounts of Covid cases and deaths. Yep, it is different. In these difficult times, I am thankful for those who choose to be different by stepping up to the plate and running for the Board of Directors. These people are like firefighters who run into the burning building. Board members are loved, hated, ignored, chastised and supported. They make the difficult decisions that guide our community in the best of times and the worst of times. They go through the fires and emerge a shining example of different. Our Board members only want what is best for the community. Sometimes the road of what is best is easily determined, while other times, navigating that road is like driving through a blizzard in whiteout conditions. It can be slow going. The driver’s hands hold tight to the steering wheel and show white knuckles, their grip is so tight. In our HOA the stress caused by many situations leaves our Board of Directors with white knuckles, as it were. Despite all of this, they don’t run away, they hold fast and lead with noble hearts. Yes, they are different. May I encourage everyone in our community to be supportive of one another and especially of our Board and those running for the Board. After all, they are different in a very good way.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 Check the Website–Hot Topics The Hot Topics web page will be mentioned many times this month, because it’s where you can find information about what’s “hot” in SCOV. Even though it’s February, there are a lot of hot topics out there. Hot Topics can be found on the home page in the top navigational bar. From Hot Topics, there is a Vote 2022 web page, where information can be found about the candidates and the voting process. There is also a page about the Activity Center Remodel with updates from the Board president, overview drawings on the project and a place to ask questions. Also in Hot Topics, you can ask questions about the community. More people are using this section this year to get information about what’s hot in SCOV and staying informed.

I am asked, “Do you think we can have our event next month?” Sadly, my reply is, “I don’t know what protocol will be tomorrow.” Between Covid and the Activity Center renovation, changes seem to happen almost daily. I know the patience of many is wearing thin, and we all want to get back to being more active. I ask for everyone to please keep up-to-date on everything by reading “This Week In SCOV” and the Tipster. If you aren’t currently receiving news emails from SCOV, now is a good time to sign up, and you can choose the information you want to receive. Go to www.suncityorovalley.com/ news-info/e-news-sign-up/ and select the lists from which you want to receive SCOV news.

Because you weren’t here, you had no idea how prolific the weeds were. Following Kate Cusumano’s “Great Reads” event highlighting several authors appearing at the Tucson Festival of Books, we have added several of these authors’ books to our collection and are on the pre-order list for their new releases. There are some great new titles coming this spring. These will be highlighted in “This Week in SCOV” as soon as they are available.
Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Shorten Your Workouts A lack of time is one of the main reasons for not sticking with exercise. A growing body of research suggests that so-called high-intensity interval training, or HIIT, can greatly reduce the amount of time you need to exercise while producing benefits that are the same as–or even greater than–what you get from conventional moderate-intensity cardio workouts. HIIT involves going hard for, say, 30 seconds, then easy, hard, then easy, and so on–as opposed to exercising at the same intensity for 30 minutes or more. A wide array of exercises, from walking to biking, can be adapted to HIIT. Studies show as little as 10 minutes of HIIT (including rest intervals) can be beneficial, so if that’s all the time you have, lace up your sneakers and go. The decreased time commitment, along with the fact that breaking up exercise into intervals can make it less boring, increases the odds that you’ll keep at it. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, February 8, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, February 9, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and reopen the following morning at the regular time.
Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash
All SCOV trash and recycle pickups take place on Monday. Don’t forget: Republic Services picks up between 6 AM and 6 PM on Mondays. You must have your trash and recycle bins out at 6 AM or you risk a missed pickup. SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues, rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing. Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic accepts in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check when you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the Report Missed Pickup tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM
Over the past year, the Architectural Review Committee has received a large number of applications to modify or add walls or fences. When contemplating such a modification to your property, it will be helpful to review the governing documents. For your convenience, the following are excerpts of what our governing documents state about walls. Master Declaration, Section 4.19 (5th Amended) Development Standards, Section 2.3 (c) “Rear yard, side yard, patio and Courtyard Wall surfaces shall be masonry or stucco. Wall surfaces shall be finished on both sides by the property Owner erecting the Wall. Wall materials shall reflect the character of the home and subdivision. Maximum height shall be measured from the finished grade of the Lot on which the Wall is built (not including Landscaping material) and shall not exceed 3’6” in the Front Yard within 20’ of the front property line or 6’ in other areas. No Wall of any nature of height greater than 5’ shall be built within a distance of 15’ of the rear property line of a lot bordering the Golf Course.” These are just a few of the requirements to get you started. Consult the online governing documents on our SCOV web page under Members > Documents > Master Declaration > Development Standards. For questions, please contact us at arc@suncityorovalley.com.

The SCOV community directory is completely separate from the administration’s HOA database. Here are four ways the SCOV community directory is used. 1. Paper phone book: Includes names, addresses, phones, occupations, and hometowns. Omits emails, units, and lots. Residents are listed by name, street and hometown. Updated annually. 2. Online directory: Located in the nonpublic area of the SCOV website. Includes emails, units, and lots, plus incremental search. Updated monthly. 3. Posse: Gets an updated phone list each month. You can be unlisted in the directory but still provide your phone number for just the Posse. 4. Party planners: Can request contact information for all listed residents in their unit, state, etc. New owners are unlisted by default. To be listed in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

The purpose of our committee is to develop and recommend to the Board a rolling 5-to-10-year plan to maintain and further enhance the quality of life for current residents, while ensuring SCOV remains competitive in attracting additional active, involved people to our community. Committee documents, past agendas, minutes and our Request Project Consideration form are available on the SCOV website. Our meetings are open to all residents.
Did We Get Our Winter Rains? Our rains in the past couple of months are mainly the cause of all the unwanted growth in our yards: weeds and grass. Putting pre-emergence down in your yard will save you from having so many weeds appear later, and it is well worth the cost and time to do it. If you choose not to use preemergence, you need your yard maintained monthly during the summer growing season. Even with pre-emergence, yards need to be cared for, at least every other month. If you leave our community for cooler climates for a few months each year, it’s not too soon to line up a landscaper to take care of your yard while you’re away. We live in the desert, but grass, weeds, bushes and trees grow profusely during our summer monsoon season, and do need attention. Rain brings growth, summer and winter.

I hear people say they are interested in joining the Posse but can’t because they don’t drive at night. Another reason is they don’t have anyone to go out with. Also, I hear the reason is they go to bed early. Be flexible. The Posse has drivers willing to pick you up and take you home before and after a shift. We have other singles willing to go on patrol with you. Take a nap the day of your tour, then stay up later that night. We’re only asking you to commit to two shifts a year. The benefits outweigh your concerns. You will meet new people and will be helping your community. The Posse needs you. Your community needs you. You can do it. Call chair, Linda Simōn, for more information.

The solar energy systems installed at various SCOV buildings during 2016 continue to produce electricity, reduce the Association’s utility costs and reduce our community’s carbon footprint. The project, valued at $1.2M in 2016, was developed and installed with no cost to SCOV. The Association purchased the systems in November 2021. The lower utility costs resulting from SCOV’s ownership will repay the purchase price of $664,413 in approximately six years. The Properties Committee unanimously supported the purchase of the solar systems. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. Please see the calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Don’t forget that the Tipster submission deadline is the 8th of the month. We understand this is early, but the process for producing a print magazine requires it. Readers like newsy, informative articles, so try submitting something other than “same as last month.” Surely, there’s something that people outside of your club or committee don’t know but would find interesting. We understand that many meetings and activities have been in flux due to the pandemic. Please submit your article by the deadline and, if something changes before the Tipster goes to press, we’ll update your information if we can.

John Balaco Why do you want to serve on the Board? I believe the Board’s primary responsibility is to serve SCOV residents. The Board needs to reconnect with residents and focus on their needs. I will work with fellow Board members to engage with residents, encourage them to speak out and provide input to the Board. Our Board needs to be more transparent. The Board needs members who are experienced in business, customer service, and have an understanding of finance. I will provide the Board with a fiscally conservative voice to help steer our community in a direction that serves current residents and provides for the future while maintaining our strong balance sheet. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? Specifically, I will closely monitor the Activity Center project and keep residents informed of the progress. Bringing this project in under budget is critical as it will release funds for other future projects. I will continue to assist management to maintain The Views customer service while minimizing operating losses. I will focus on finding ways to build new pickle ball courts without reducing the tennis courts, fund the new fitness pool, and keep residents informed as to planned future projects as they are being developed instead of waiting until they are finalized and voted upon. What knowledge, skills and experience do you bring? I have an MBA in Finance and Marketing, For 10 years, I was Finance manager at a Fortune 100 company. For the past 30 years I’ve been self-employed having built, owned, and operated a hotel and several food/beverage establishments. I’m an active Florida Real Estate investor and licensed Florida Realtor. Since 2005, I’ve served as Board Chairman of a chemical processing company in Chicago Heights Il. I also serve as the Secretary and Treasurer of a Florida condominium association.

Sun City Vistoso Tipster, Febraury 2011
I have a lifetime of business experience that qualifies me for the Board. I will work with Board members and provide fiscally prudent analyses of current and future projects. I understand the importance of actively engaging with others and balancing what is wanted with what is fiscally reasonable. I pledge to always be available to residents. We may not always agree but I will listen. I appreciate your considering me for a position on your SCOV Board.
Elaine Deeter Why do you want to serve on the Board? I feel it is important to be a part of the community that I live in and to serve that community to the best of my ability. We have good strong people leading us and I hope to be a part of that and see it continue. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? I want to see our community continue to grow wisely and remain financially secure as it has been since first buying here. We need to take care of our investment here and make sure that we have plans in place to take care of what is needed to do this. Things change over time, and we need to be on top of change and act prudently when making decisions. What knowledge, skills and experience do you bring? I believe coming from a sales and customer service background I have good people skills. I know how to listen and evaluate what it is people want. I know difficult decisions must be made at times and that not everyone will be happy with some of those decisions but being kind and truly listening is an important factor. It serves no purpose to ignore important questions. What is important to others deserves answers. I try not to take things personally.
Rocky Gedrose Why do you want to serve on the Board? I have chosen to run for the Board to help continue the work of Board members who have come before me. I would like to see the community continue in its current direction. If SCOV is to remain a premier active adult community it is critical that we continue to upgrade and enhance our existing facilities. We must also provide amenities that appeal to an ever-changing demographic. However, equally important, if not more so, is to maintain our financial strength. This is a key factor for many prospective home buyers, and of great importance to our existing residents. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? I have no personal agenda, but I would like to see communication between the Board and the residents improved. As a Board member I feel it is critical to listen to the members of the community and be a voice for all residents. What knowledge, skills and experience do you bring? I served three years on our HOA in Georgia. I was President for two of those years. I served on the board of a men’s golf association for five years in Acworth, GA. I currently serve on the board of Views 18 Hole Men’s Group. In my working career I spent 32 years in the corporate world of commercial finance. Most of my career was spent

in Atlanta Georgia in positions of increasing responsibility. I gained extensive experience in annual budgeting and monthly forecasting. Ultimately, I was responsible for managing an office with receivables in excess of $300 million. I had a staff of between 25 and 30 employees. This gave me a lot of experience in problem solving, conflict resolution, and leadership. In my last five years, I transitioned to Business Development. It was in this role I learned the importance listening. The less I talked and the more I listened I was better able to develop a plan to satisfy the customer’s needs.
Tim Kelley Why do you want to serve on the Board? SCOV is my forever home. Joan and I bought our home here, in an active adult community with many amenities that are attractive to us in our retirement years. SCOV provides us with a community that supports our lifestyle, keeps us physically and mentally active, and socially involved in our retirement. I strongly support, have been proactively involved, and served our community, and I want to continue in service. Is there something specific you want to change or accomplish? I support change within SCOV where change is warranted to maintain our community as a premier active adult (55+) community. As our residents age and change with incoming homeowners, the amenities and interests within our community must keep pace. Change should not be easy. Change should be challenged. Comprehensive understanding of proposed changes should be achieved. This requires examination of the need, cost, and the positive and negative impacts prior to approval. There should be a strategic plan, one that is flexible, one that changes with changing interests of our residents. Continued fiscal responsibility is extremely important for SCOV to maintain the superior fiscal strength among the communities that we compete with in southern Arizona! The amount of annual dues must be competitive. What knowledge, skills and experience do you bring? I am an electrical engineer, trained to identify, analyze, and solve problems. My career included project development and management, business development, strategic planning, financial analysis, and marketing. My SCOV experience includes Board of Directors and Board Treasurer (2017-2020), and service on committees/ task forces: Marketing (2014-2016), Golf Advisory (20152016), Mountain View Plaza Evaluation (2020), Solar Purchase Evaluation (2020), Resident Representative – Greens Reconstruction (2020), Finance Budget (2021), and Artisan Center Renovation (2021). I served as Chair for many of the committees and have a reputation of getting things accomplished. My education, training, and career experiences support and relate to SCOV. My SCOV Board, committee/task force experiences provide a wide breadth of experience and knowledge that will benefit the Board in making decisions.

You may have noticed that we recently received new golf carts. Thirty-four carts were designated for Asset Reserve replacement this year with an estimated replacement cost of $131,300. We have an additional 20 carts that were up in two more years; however, by moving the other twenty carts up two years, we got a greater trade-in amount for those twenty carts, allowing us to get our entire fleet of 54 carts on the same replacement schedule moving forward, for less than the amount we had scheduled for replacing the 34 Club Car carts this year. This saved us roughly $100k–the amount scheduled for replacing 20 carts in 2023. Basically, we had had about $232k scheduled for cart replacement for the next two years, and we were able to replace them all right now for $129,306. The old Club Cars had a four-year life cycle. We will keep the new Yamahas on the same schedule. When the four years pass, we will evaluate if the carts are in need of replacement. If not, we will push them back a year. The new Yamaha carts have maintenance-free batteries, allowing for no overflow and leakage from having to refill the batteries. The real savings in my opinion, was the trade-in value we received from Yamaha on all our carts, allowing us to purchase all fifty-four under budget. Also, we are in the process of budgeting for the fiscal year of 2022-2023. I want to remind everyone that we are including overseeding the course this fall in the budget and have every intention of overseeding. We will reevaluate the pros and cons this spring. We appreciate everyone’s support during the current season that we did not overseed for agronomic reasons.
Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063
The theme for golf course maintenance this winter has been accomplishing projects that have been neglected the last couple years due to lack of staff and time. Normally, the staff is busy mowing, irrigating, fertilizing and detailing overseeded ryegrass. The priority has turned to working on other aspects of the golf course that don’t normally get as much attention. The staff has completed several drainage projects, thinned out big cactus areas around tee boxes, and has removed and trimmed several trees. Another major priority this winter was improving the playability and condition of the sand traps. They were becoming very compacted, thus draining slowly and making it difficult to hit a normal bunker shot. Originally, the plan was to add new sand to the greenside traps. Adding new sand would improve playability and extend the life of the traps until their scheduled replacement in the next few years. However, sand has become one of those items that is very hard to find these days, so that idea needed to be changed. Ultimately, the sand traps have a good amount of sand in the bottoms, but the sand raking machine wasn’t raking
11
deep enough, leading to a compacted surface. The rake attachment was taken off our new machine and replaced with the rake from an older machine to allow for deeper raking. The tines were also lengthened to help “fluff” the sand. Combined with reduced irrigation around the bunkers, this has led to a much softer, playable sand.

Regarding making tee times: Some feel 6 AM is too early and would like to see this changed to the evening before or later in the morning. If you agree, please send us an email. The Golf Advisory Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month at 2 PM. In-person meetings (when possible) are for fully vaccinated committee members only, with a Zoom option for all others. If there is a particular question you would like to have answered or an issue you would like addressed, please email it to the committee in advance of the meeting or tell your league representative, and it will be added to the agenda. This will ensure a more comprehensive response.

The first mission statement listed for The Views 18-Hole Golf Club states that we are to “encourage and promote organized golf for all members.” Please be part of our Wednesdays for fun and competition. Fun rule change proposals for seniors: • If a tree is between the ball and the hole, and the tree is deemed younger than the player, then the ball can be moved without penalty. This is so, because this is simply a question of timing; when the player was younger, the tree was not there, so the player is being penalized because of his age. • If a putt passes over a hole without dropping, it is deemed to have dropped. The law of gravity supersedes the rules of golf. • There is no penalty for so-called “out of bounds.” If penny-pinching golf course owners bought sufficient land, this would not occur. The senior player deserves an apology, not a penalty. Have you noticed more animal sightings the past several years? Until recently, deer were rarely seen in SCOV until the Oracle Highway wild game overand underpass crossings were constructed in 2016. Since then, over 65 different species have been identified and over 350,000 photographs of animals have been catalogued by the Coalition for Sonoran Desert Protection, many taken in the Big Wash on the door step of our community. These cameras are checked monthly by a group of Sun City volunteers to monitor wild animal activity and then analyzed by the Coalition. The combination of weathering and an exceptional 2021 monsoon season causing damage meant that many of these cameras needed to be replaced. Your Foundation was Mike Froehner, Sun City volunteer pleased to participate in purchasing new cameras. Isn’t it fun to live amongst the wildlife–the animal kind, especially?

Photo by Tom Prall Modelers love to share the fruits of their labors with the families who come to our four open houses each year as these folks did in December. But, visitors are welcome to come in any time we’re working in the club workroom in the Artisan Center. The history of the prototypes of the models we build is important to us. It adds to our appreciation of the miniature world we are creating and leads to more accurate representations. Presentations at our monthly meetings in Catalina Vista help us learn more about the planes, cars, boats, buildings and trains we build. On February 11, club member Bruce Dewald (USN retired) will talk about the role of the B-24 Liberator (PB4Y-1) in naval combat during WWII. All are invited to join us. This 45-minute talk will begin at 9 AM.

Sculpture Pres. Laurie Lichaa 520-991-9953 Mon., 9 AM-5 PM, Catalina Vista/Art Studio
The Sculpture Club meets on Mondays in the Art Studio in Catalina Vista. If you are interested in becoming a member of our club or learning more about what we do, please stop in on Monday mornings or contact Laurie Lichaa, president. If you would like to see some of our work, we have sculptures in the display cases in Catalina Vista and the SCOV Library. When a sculpture is close to being finished, the piece is often checked by the artist for imperfections. In the picture above, Janet Szumlas is using a flashlight to inspect her sculpture. Imperfections such as air bubbles, fingerprints, small cracks, etc., can be detected by viewing the piece in various lights or turning the piece upside down or side to side. One trick that sculptors use to look for symmetry is to place a mirror next to the work to compare one side of the piece to the other simultaneously.

If you are interested in being part of our group, stop by the Sewing Room on Tuesday mornings or contact Coni Arseneau or Carrie Wiley. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking. People interested in other arts using fiber are invited and welcome to join our group. The photo is a project completed by Carrie Wiley. She used a technique for rug hooking referred to as “Proddy.” Proddy is an old-fashioned British variation on rug hooking. The proddy tool in the lower right in the picture is used to push cut pieces of wool fabric through the foundation backing which makes a three-dimensional design. Here, Carrie used traditional rug hooking for the base of the project and Proddy to give the 3D effect of the holiday flowers. An entire rug can be made just by using the proddy technique.

This club provides an enjoyable social evening getting to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking (and eating) interesting food. Our monthly (December-March) themed dinners in individual members’ homes provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g., German) or get creative with more ambiguous themes (e.g., food in songs). Since everyone brings part of the meal, it’s not a huge effort for the hosts. We also have several catered/restaurant events each year. Our January dinner theme was “French Bistro.” Please visit our website to see photos and details. And contact a club officer for more information if you’d like to join the club. Note: Proof of Covid vaccination is required to attend club activities.

Unfortunately, we weren’t able to have our annual dinner again this year due to the recent surge in Covid cases within the community. However, we look forward to scheduling another date for 2023 in the hope that we’ll all be able to enjoy each other and our Scandinavian heritage once again. Look for an upcoming announcement of the 2023 date.

Folk dancing is a wonderful way to exercise both your body and mind while socializing in the company of a warm and welcoming group. We encourage everyone who is fully vaccinated and boostered to join us–no experience, no partners required–to tour the world in music and dance. We review each dance prior to dancing, keeping in mind that the only mistake you can make is not having fun. Bonus: no meetings, no minutes, no dues; just dance, dance, dance. There is even a club website which lists each week’s dances along with a video link to each dance for those who like to watch or review dances at home. Please give it a try. Questions? Come and see. Check out the website or call Raven.

Dancing to music by the band Unwound We had a dance at Catalina Vista on January 7 with Unwound band that was well attended. This month we’ll dance on Thursday, February 10, Catalina Vista, with Clear Country band. Check your email or send a note to KKSCOV@ gmail.com to sign up for the dance; it is pay at the door. We have dances scheduled for Saturday, March 11, and Friday, April 8, Catalina Vista. These are also pay at the door dances. All of the dances at Catalina Vista are planned to be from 6-9 PM. We started a new season of Country-Western dance classes on January 10. They run through March 7 on Mondays. The classes are held in the AFC Studio 1 and 2 (on the right as you go into the pool/fitness area). The Level 2/intermediate class is from 4:30-5:30 PM on Mondays, then 30 minutes of pattern dancing for both Level 1 and 2 followed by the Level 1 class from 6-7 PM. Look for updates from and send any questions to Nancy. Klucking@gmail.com or KKSCOV@gmail.com.
Exercise Aqua Tone Irmel Wheeler 520-334-0957 irmel5596@gmail.com Marcia Polley 520-818-9073 Tue., Thu., Sat., 9 AM, AFC/Pool
Aqua Tone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, 9 AM in the winter, 8 AM in the summer, at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Being able to do a basic swim stroke is very helpful. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band (you’ll need to bring your own). A band can be purchased from Marcia for $5. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help with learning the various movements. You will get a good workout in a fun class.

Arthritis Water Pres. Sherry Olivier sherryolivier55@gmail.com Sec. Melanie Livingston meljean178@yahoo.com Mon., Wed., Fri. 1 PM Oct.-Apr.; 10:10 AM May-Sep.; AFC/Pool
When the air temperature is 77 degrees or higher, our club performs gentle water exercises designed by the Arthritis Foundation to help with range of motion. These are great for those with arthritis, fibromyalgia, replaced joints, etc. Unfortunately, cooler temperatures are hard on many older people or those with muscular and nerve problems. Because January and February in Oro Valley historically have temperatures in the low 60s to 70s, we probably will not be meeting. Paid club members may contact the officers for modified copies of our exercises to be done safely at home. Annual dues are $5 and the next membership meeting to recruit new members will be held in late March. See the March Tipster.
Energetic Exercise Donna Clark 970-946-1048 Mon. and Wed. 8-9 AM, AFC Studio Fri., Feb. 4, 18 and 25, 7:45-8:45 AM, Catalina Vista
Have a heart–happy and healthy. Join with SCOV friends, new and old, as we enjoy a wonderful workout with instructor, Sally Martinez. She really knows how to get us seniors moving. You’ll enjoy the fun variety of aerobic and weight exercise plus lots of balance and stretch moves to help our bodies be strong and flexible. During the remodeling of the Activity Center, we meet at two different locations: Monday and Wednesday at the AFC Studio and Fridays as available, at Catalina Vista. The Energetic Exercise calendar and SignUpGenius both provide information on the locations and times for each class. New members are warmly welcomed–men and women– as long as there is room. We are currently limited to 34 participants in these locations. Annual dues are $3. Punch card for 12 classes is $30.
Fitness Swim Contact: Dave Goodman goodman@sfu.ca Tue., Thu., Sat., 6:45-8 AM, AFC pool
The Fitness Swim Club provides a vehicle for swimmers to participate in a group swim workout. We generally go 2,400 to 3,000 yards per workout, mostly freestyle. Some do more, a few do less. Workouts are suitable for master swimmers, triathletes and those who would just like to participate in swim workouts. Please ensure you have medical clearance to participate in vigorous physical activity prior to joining. We welcome new members.

Guess what? It’s already the second month of 2022 and time to consider a new exercise routine. Why not try the SCOV Pilates Club mat classes? They are offered here in the AFC Mondays and Thursdays. The exercises strengthen your core (abdomen and back muscles). You will also notice that you have better balance, more muscle tone and increased stamina. People ask, “Can the benefits from the stretching and strengthening exercises done in class, really develop the body’s core, increase spine mobility and build flexibility?” The answer is a definite yes. We have two very experienced instructors and the cost is only $8/class, with

Board games similar to Scrabble have been around for over 2000 years. Egypt’s King Tut was put to his final rest with various board games so he could play his favorite games in the afterlife. The Ashanti tribe of Ghana is believed to have invented a board game known as “Wari,” which over time, has become known as Mancala. Society evolved and progressed over the years until approximately the 1800s, with a game called “Mansion.” The basis of that game was to reach Heaven before other players. Other games invented over the last 200 years are Parcheesi, Clue, Scrabble, and Monopoly. These are just a few of the most popular games. Chris Haney and Scott Abbott were playing a game of Scrabble when the idea for a new game called “Trivial Pursuit” presented itself. By way of information, Milton-Bradley is one of the largest manufacturers of board games.

Not only do these women have frequent socials with cookies, hot chocolate and pizza, they have an excuse to have fellowship. They also raised $360 for Youth On Their Moon rising over the Catalina Mountains Own this past Christmas. What is most exciting is they experience beautiful sunsets and moonrises. The group was formed in 2013 by Bonnie Baird, who not only saw a need for just women to play causal pickleball, but also mentored those who are just learning the game. YOTO/Northwest Auxiliary Kris Cohen 520-818-2582 krisandearl@msn.com
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) preserves a way to donate money to Youth On Their Own (YOTO) and enjoy tax benefits under the new tax law. Traditionally, people who contribute to charity itemize deductions and receive a tax benefit. Under the new law, people may be better off using the new, larger standard deduction. If you are 72 or older, you can transfer up to $100,000 from your IRA to charity tax-free as a QCD, which counts as your required minimum distribution but isn’t added to your adjusted gross income. And you still get the new, sizable standard deduction against other income. It’s a win-win.

"SHE GAVE ME MY LIFE BACK" Local clinic has a modern, medical solution to treat your Peripheral Neuropathy and is seeing incredible results! "It started out as a normal outing. My wife and I had to run to the grocery store. We were driving down the road casually going over our shopping list when the car ahead of me started to slow down anticipating the yellow light. I started to move my foot from the gas to the brake as any normal person would do when they see brake lights in front of them, but I couldn't. I couldn't feel my foot! The car kept moving forward and I just couldn't get my foot on the brake. And CRUNCH! I finally came to a stop when I hit the car in front of me."
issues as was the case with Dan. "I said I wasn't going to drive again, what if that had been a pedestrian?" It is all too common that peripheral neuropathy and it's debilitating symptoms interfere with a person's ability to live their life. Dan was now reliant on his wife to drive him around. Even simple pleasures like driving to the golf range or taking his wife out to dinner was out of his capabilities. And even more common, Dan's general practitioner and several specialists told him there was nothing they could do besides prescribe pills to hopefully ease his pain.
"I can't lie" confides Dan. "I was skeptical at first. When I was told by specialists that nothing could be done and then there's an Acupuncturist here in town who tells me she can help. It turns out she was right! About 3 months after treatment started I was able to confidently drive myself to my appointments! My wife and I even celebrated by buying a new car! It's hard to put into words how incredible this is, quite frankly Kari Hahn gave me my life back!"
