From The Board of Directors Our mission as the SCOV Board is to lead in maintaining and enhancing the quality of life in Sun City Oro Valley as an active adult community. All Board minutes, agendas and reports are available online and in the SCOV Library. Board meetings are open to residents.

Board of Directors howardschulzscov@gmail.com Renovation of SCOV Facilities by Howard Schulz What’s next and how do we fund renovations? When I joined the Board three years ago, we challenged the SCOV General Manager (GM) to bring the Board revenue-generating ideas. This resulted in the Board and community voting on a proposal from Comcast that will translate into revenues of over $1M during the 10-year life of the agreement. In addition, our GM and controller acquired a Paycheck Protection Program Loan (over $600K) which was forgiven during the Covid pandemic. This helped fund the early purchase of the SCOV solar panel system with forecasted electrical cost savings of over $100K per year. We shouldn’t forget the work of SCOV’s past Board president John Wilson and Mark Wade to leverage the purchasing power of 2,488 homes and negotiate a three-year trash removal contract well below market rates. As a Board and community member, I supported these efforts. The Board has chosen to direct the Comcast monies into our Capital Fund. I was pleased to see that the community reviewed and approved a plan to renovate the 30-plus-year-old Activity Center ($4.5M) without a homeowner assessment. Many thanks to the tireless efforts of committee members to bring projects forward. There are other SCOV facilities that will also need improvement considerations as we go forward. Our track record is pretty good. In the past, SCOV has upgraded and renovated a number of facilities, (restaurant, Pro Shop, Desert Oasis, Catalina Vista, bocce ball courts, pickleball courts, Aquatic & Fitness Center (assessment was voted and accepted by community) and others. Future Boards will be challenged to balance the wants and needs of residents versus the availability of funds for the many requests coming forward. There may not be sufficient funds available to do all the requested projects, and they may not be able to be done as quickly as wanted. Yes, we should continue to evaluate projects to maintain SCOV’s attractiveness to future home buyers, but in a measured and fiscally responsible manner.

Thanks to the many SCOV residents for their support over the past three years.

General Manager - Mark Wade mwade@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8080 Thank a Staff Member I want to congratulate the winners of the SCOV Board of Directors election. It is quite an honor to be selected by your community to be their servant leaders. By receiving the requisite votes to represent SCOV as a Board member, this community has demonstrated the belief and trust that this group of residents will lead the community with vision, dignity, respect and integrity. This is the standard here at SCOV and has been since before I became the General Manager. I’m proud to say that the Board members I’ve served with have the best welfare of the community in mind when they make all their decisions. This is also a good opportunity for me to brag a little on the staff who I’m privileged to work beside. Over the past two-plus years, this group of hard-working people have been some of the golden threads that are woven into the tapestry of history here at SCOV. During a worldwide pandemic when others were part of the great resignation, these loyal employees came to work to cook your food at the restaurant and serve you (after the restaurant was able to reopen). Some of the servers drove lawn mowers or worked in other ways in other departments to help out. The golf course maintenance team kept working day in and day out. They and the facilities maintenance team arrived before the sun came up and worked hard into the heat of the day. Our staff was here working, keeping the multimillion dollars worth of assets viable, rather than taking advantage of the temporarily increased unemployment benefits. These employees have a true sense of duty and loyalty to you, the residents. Some worked from home when we closed the Welcome Center. Their hours did not diminish, and they developed many new programs that can be accessed online by our residents to do such things as submit Architectural Review applications. We did not miss a month of this magazine, and routine “This Week In SCOV” communications continued. My entire team adapted to the challenges of the day and came out on top. It is an honor for me and for you to have such dedicated individuals working here at SCOV. If you see them before I do, please tell them thanks for me. Oh, and they would love hearing a thank you from you, too.

Asst. General Manager - Robin Coulter rcoulter@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8070 You Won! Explorer’s Best of the Northwest Awards There was a great response to vote for Best of the Northwest 2022, evidenced by the winning outcome. The Views Golf Club took first for Best Golf Course. This is the ninth year in a row for the golf course to win this distinction! We are happy and proud of the team at TVGC! Sun City Oro Valley won Best Active Living Community, and we agree that SCOV is more than living, it’s a lifestyle enjoyed by those who live and play here. In the Food and Beverage categories, The Views Restaurant was reader recommended for Best Live Venue (the terrace, the patio, the mountain views!) and received Honorable Mentions for Restaurant Curbside Pickup, Happy Hour and Oro Valley Restaurant. It’s nice to share the good news about SCOV, The Views Golf Course and The Views Restaurant with Northwest Tucson. The recognition is well and good, but the real winners are each of you who make this a vibrant, healthy community. Thank you for all you do to make SCOV a wonderful place to live and play.

Program/Facilities Director - Pam Sarpalius psarpalius@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8077 Hello Spring We are happy to have an outdoor movie on the driving range on Thursday, April 14. Join us for Belfast, which has been nominated for seven Academy Awards. Look for more information in Coming Events. Many of our seasonal residents have started to leave and we wish them safe travels. As the reopening of the Activity Center nears, please know that I have been making arrangements for new shows and events starting in January. Some local talent may provide entertainment if the renovation is completed before year-end. Once all is complete, we will be so happy to see the remodel and all that it brings to the community.

Sun City Oro Valley Tipster, April 2022

Community Services - Katy Mosier Architectural Coordinator, Katy Mosier scoroval@ciramail.com 520-917-8058 Making Changes to Your Home Rule of thumb: If you are thinking of a project that would change the exterior of your home or lot, it will probably need some sort of HOA approval. If you are not sure this is needed, please check with the Architectural Coordinator at scoroval@ciramail.com, and she will verify which kind of approval is necessary and help you through the process if necessary. With so much remodeling going on, some homeowners feel compelled to make quick decisions in order to secure a vendor and bid. Get HOA approval first before you sign a contract or make a down payment. Practice due diligence in getting references before signing contracts and being very careful about how much money (if any) one should give a contractor up front. Be wise when dealing with salespeople who are pushy or insistent. If you are alone when making a major decision about signing on the dotted line or giving advances to vendors, ask a trusted friend or relative to review the situation with you or assist you at a meeting. Fear of sharing your financial information with someone looking out for you should not stop you from being extra careful when dealing with vendors.

New titles just added include: The Gum Chewing Rattler, Guess Who is in the Desert, and Cactus Hotel. Recreation and Fitness - Lonnie Davis ldavis@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8073 Slowing Muscle Decay as You Age Your whole life, you probably heard that age-related muscle atrophy, also called sarcopenia, is inevitable. Yet you have probably seen people well into their senior years who have incredible muscle mass and strength. How is that possible? The truth is that while some muscle atrophy can be expected over time, anyone can improve muscle agility and response. This includes a great-grandmother in her 70s, as well as a college student in his 20s. In fact, everyone needs to learn how to slow sarcopenia because having strong, reli-

able muscles is important for a healthy, long life. The key to keeping muscle atrophy at bay lies in a structured exercise program, not a haphazard one. Though lifting weights occasionally is better than never lifting at all, people need to systematically engage in strength training if they want to see long-term benefits. Special Note From the Aquatic and Fitness Center (AFC) Contact Lonnie Davis, AFC Coordinator, to discuss questions or concerns with the AFC. Hours of operation for the AFC and Desert Oasis are on page 2. Tuesday, April 12, the AFC pool and spa will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time. Wednesday, April 13, the Desert Oasis pool will be closed for cleaning and shock treatment and will reopen the following morning at the regular time.

Republic Services scov@republicservices.com www.suncityorovalley.com/members/services/trash

All SCOV trash and recycle pickups take place on Monday. Don’t forget: Republic Services picks up between 6 AM and 6 PM on Mondays. You must have your trash and recycle bins out at 6 AM or you risk a missed pickup. SCOV has a dedicated customer service representative with Republic Services. Many of you are aware of the labor challenges the country is currently experiencing, and Republic Services highly encourages residents to email any service issues, rather than telephone, in order to receive the best service. Our representative can be reached at scov@ republicservices.com. This email is listed on the Republic magnet you received in your annual dues mailing. Visit our web page where you can find the following information: 1) Recycling: View a video and web page on what Republic accepts in their recycling bins. Glass is accepted for recycling. 2) Holiday schedule: Check when you need to shift setting your bins out due to a holiday. 3) Report a problem: Missed pickup? Bin damaged? Click the Report Missed Pickup tab, fill out our form and Republic will receive a copy.

Architectural Review Kris Ahlstrand 510-693-5502 ARC@suncityorovalley.com Zoom meetings Second and Fourth Tue., 2 PM

The Architectural Review Committee (ARC) meets on a regular basis with homeowners about their plans for expanding the footprint of their home. In the recent past, we have been made aware of a few contractors asking for a large deposit before the project has been brought before the committee. If you are planning an exterior home improvement project, please be sure to contact the ARC before spending money or signing a contract. ARC members at arc@suncityorovalley.com are here for you. You can also consult the SCOV Consumer Referral List for a reliable vendor. Ask your neighbors to give a recommendation on work they had done, or talk to residents who have completed a project similar to the one you are contemplating. These are other ways to make sure you are getting reliable contractors. Remember, buyer beware.

Artisan Center Renovation Task Force Chair Tim Kelley tkelleyscov@gmail.com See SCOV calendar for meeting dates, time and location

The Artisan Center Renovation Task Force (ACRTF) meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month as needed. The SCOV website will have current meeting notices. Community Directory Chair Lisa Collins 812-344-4773 scov.community.directory@gmail.com www.scovaz.com/members/services/directory

SCOV pays nothing for the paper directory: The publisher finances it with ad revenue. Now, most people use the Internet, so fewer businesses buy ads in directories. Let the advertisers know that you appreciate their ads and keep your fingers crossed for next year. If the publisher can’t continue, we will need to decide if we want to pay for a paper directory ourselves. Did you know our directory is also on the SCOV website? Find your neighbors’ names, or all the people from your hometown, or whatever you seek. The incremental search box will display results as you type. Are you included in the directory? New homeowners are unlisted by default. To add or update your listing in the directory, the preferred method is to complete the online form “Change your directory listing.” Otherwise, you can fill out an orange card at the Welcome Center.

The purpose of our committee is to develop and recommend to the Board a rolling 5 to 10-year plan to maintain and further enhance the quality of life for current residents, while ensuring SCOV remains competitive in attracting additional active, involved people to our community. Committee documents, past agendas, minutes and our Request Project Consideration form are available on the SCOV website. Our meetings are open to all residents.

Neighborhood Pride Co-chairs Anita Nisonger and Janette Simister Questions, 520-917-8079 scoroval@ciramail.com Third Tue., 2 PM, WC3 Spring Has Arrived It’s time to make sure those empty pots in front yards are filled with living plants, cactus or flowers. With all the rain we had early this year, weeds are popping up everywhere. When weeds are small, they are easy to remove. Wildflowers are allowed in our community until after they finish blooming, at which time they, too, need to be removed. Trim any trees that block stop signs, or shrubs that overhang the sidewalk or street, as they also grew during our winter rains. Remember, no artifacts of any kind are allowed in front yards including the painted rocks that lifted our spirits during lockdown. Winter residents should be sure that someone maintains their yards during the summer months, so the home looks cared for while they are away. Do notify the Administration of your summer address in case they need to reach you. Continue to take pride in your property even when you are not on site, so that it will look just as nice upon your return as when you left.

Why do we have the Posse? It creates greater awareness of crime trends and helps reduce crime in our area. It also serves as a warning to criminals, and makes it harder for them to operate in SCOV. The Posse increases effectiveness of law enforcement, because it’s better to work with officials to investigate suspicious activity before, rather than after, a crime has occurred. It reduces the risk of becoming a crime victim and in turn reduces the physical, financial and psychological costs of crime and the Posse increases surveillance in our area by providing an extra set of eyes and ears. Call Linda Simōn for more information.

The Chalk Creek wash is the largest wash in our community. In the past, heavy storms caused damage to the wash and golf course and threatened homes. As a result, a program was established to maintain the wash and minimize the threat from heavy storms. A key element to the ongoing maintenance of the wash is a series of inspections to determine the condition of the creek and identify potential threats to surrounding properties. The Properties Committee, together with HOA staff, will conduct an inspection during April. The Properties Committee works on a variety of tasks like this during the year. Our recent meetings have been in person and via Zoom. Please see the committee calendar on the SCOV website for scheduled meeting dates, times and meeting format.

Director of Golf - Rick Price rprice@theviewsgolfclub.com 520-917-8086

Spring is finally here as the weather warms up and the Bermuda grass is starting to grow. Again, we appreciate and thank you for understanding how important it was not to overseed this winter season to allow for the improvement of the long-term health of the golf course. You will certainly see the dividends in course conditions during the transition this spring, summer and into next season. The Cure for Cancer event last month was a huge success, and thank you to all who participated and donated to the cause. We raised well over $40,000 for the University of Arizona Cancer Center. The Men’s 18-Hole Member Invitational is scheduled for April 8-9. All leagues are wrapping up their main tournament events this month, and we all look forward to the construction project with the Activity Center being completed next season to allow for meeting space and luncheons. Our Chip & Putt event on Thursdays continues through this month on April 14 and 28, starting at 4:30 PM. You can play up to six people per group. The entry fee is $15 pp for golf, prizes, and dinner on the terrace. Sign up online through the reservation system or call the Pro Shop at 520825-3110. This month’s Yappy Hour will be Thursday, April 21, from 4-5 PM, on the driving range tee. There will be drink specials

and treats for the dogs. Social dogs with up-to-date shots are welcome and leashes are required. The driving range will close at 3:30 PM for a clean pick of all the range balls in the wash and desert areas. Volunteers are appreciated in helping us collect the balls. Next month we will announce our new rates and membership plans for our fiscal year starting July 1, 2022. We look forward to enjoying the golf course conditions this spring and thank everyone for their support in playing golf.

Superintendent - Michael Kropf scvgolf@suncityorovalley.com 520-917-8063

There were many agronomic reasons for not overseeding the fairways this season. Controlling persistent weeds in fairways is difficult when overseeded with winter ryegrass, and the biggest reason of all is to give the underlying Bermuda grass a break from the ryegrass competition. More time was also spent on other projects like drainage and desert clearing around tee boxes, For over twenty years, most of the fairways were overseeded each fall. The exception was one year when we skipped overseeding as part of the two or four-hole rotation. The constant overseeding is very tough on the Bermuda grass, especially when it is irrigated with reclaimed water that introduces large amounts of salts. Combined with the surface competition of the ryegrass for sunlight and nutrients, the salts have a negative impact on the Bermuda grass roots. This year the Bermuda grass will not have any thin or bare areas in early summer and will be much more dense than previous summers. However, even though the fairways will be in very good condition, they will still require the usual maintenance practices that are performed each summer. In June the fairways will be aerified and topdressed. During the later summer months, the fairways will be verticut several times to maintain thatch levels and improve growth patterns. Growth regulators will be applied to slow the growth rate and prevent excess clippings and scalping from mowers. Not overseeding was just another part of the yearly maintenance of the golf course. All the other maintenance practices are still required to continually improve the health of the course.

Tom O’Shea is a lifelong musician. Tom is a full-time bass player and audio engineer. He performed for an Arizonabased touring act, Corte, in the 1980s. Later, he started his own company, Blue Skye Sound Company. He has worked with artists such as Cyndi Lauper, Gordon Lightfoot, Kris Kristopherson and Smokey Robinson. Tom and his wife, Liza, moved to Oro Valley, AZ in 2020. Easter will arrive on April 17 this year. We will be featuring a plated dinner (price and menu TBD) from 10 AM to 5 PM. To most of us in SCOV, living in a domestic abuse family environment is incomprehensible. The constant turmoil and fear often leaves no room for hope that those victims can ever experience the secure, calm and happy lives we take for granted. Fortunately, there is Emerge Center Against Domestic Abuse in Tucson, which provides critical services of crisis intervention, safety planning and emergency shelter to support families as they rebuild their lives. For the past 25 years, the Charity Works (formerly called SCOV Women’s Auxiliary) Kathy Patterson, president of SCOV Charity Works, Club’s main focus center, with Lauryn Bianco and Ed Sakwa from Emerge has been supporting this very worthwhile organization. Over 200 Sun City residents help raise funds with a spring fashion show and a fall accessory boutique, which has been very limited with the Covid concerns. Your Foundation is proud to partner with Charity Works to support this life-changing (and sometimes life-saving) endeavor.

New technologies come to model making. The farm on our model railroad has a corn field but no corn picker. One member had a model of one, but in a larger scale, that would loom over the corn stalks. Club member Greg Longerich and his 3D printer came to the rescue. Three-dimensional printing works much like your standard computer printer, but instead of putting down one layer of ink on the page, it lays down multiple layers of resin, one on top of another until a threedimensional object is created. The photo below shows the original implement, smaller renditions made using two different types of resin, the final reduced-size version that will go on the model railroad in John Deere green, and several of its component parts. In last month’s Sculpture Club article, the picture showed the beginnings of sculpturing a “head,” which was being taught in a class for new and existing members. The instructor, Aleda Haug asked the class to choose a picture of what they wanted to create. The picture above shows some of the heads that were created. As you can see, there is a variety of characters from whimsical to human. Five of the six figures shown have been baked and are ready for a finish. One person used pre-colored grey polymer for the hair on two figures.

the challenge of converting used bedsheets into crib sheets for More Than A Bed, a community organization assisting foster families with supplies. We put out a call for residents to donate used bedsheets and wow, have you responded. Thank you so much. It is a team effort to convert these sheets. We measure, rip, square off corners of the used sheets before sergers sew on new elastic to make the new sheets. Then the crib sheets are washed and folded and taken to More Than A Bed. Recently Casa member, Carol Myers, distributed 90 completed crib sheets and hugs. She was greeted with shouts of joy when she came through the door. It really is the small things in life that can make a huge difference. Everyone who has donated used bedsheets has helped with this ongoing project. So keep saving those used bedsheets (not used for cactus coverings). Drop them off in the Sewing Room in the Artisian Center.

Spring is here and this is the month that so many of our winter residents begin to migrate back to their second homes. We will really miss all of your smiling faces until you return to SCOV. The month of March brought many hands to work in the Sewing Room during our Cheer Bear creating hours. The machines have been humming and the bears have been marching. We will work on all Wednesday afternoons during the summer, so we hope to keep the room alive with laughter and sharing. Sign in and come join us to complete our tasks. We love to meet new faces each week. One last reminder: We are always looking for flannel donations and polyfil donations to keep our Cheer Bears on the move. Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Spring is in the air, and this is the beginning of the seasonal migration from Sun City to all parts of the country to escape the heat of summer. Seniors for Kids wants to let you know how much we appreciate the time that our members spend with us in the fall and winter. The friendships are precious and the work that you do spills into the entire Tucson community. We wish you safe travels until you return. Our April business meeting will be the last until we meet again in September. Please come and share the breakfast we have planned. Please keep shopping with Amazon and Fry’s so we can get our reward monies. If you are clearing out cloth or yarn from your stashes, Seniors for Kids could use some for the work we do. Thank you again to the entire community for all you do. Looking forward to seeing your smiles again.

Carol Guibert 520-404-1462 Second and Fourth Tue., 1 PM, Desert Oasis/Ocotillo Our quilt group meetings are coming to a close until next fall. We have one more month of meetings until September. However, the month is still busy with Pam Dunlap presenting a quilt class on Thursday, April 21, 1 PM, in the Sewing Room. On Tuesday, April 12, there Mary Barr with her winning quilt will be final signups for her class, and we will show the Accuquilt dies and samples made from it. There will be a final meeting on Tuesday, April 26, with a tea and cookie sampling. Mary Barr, a SCOV resident, won our amazing opportunity quilt at our show. If you are interested in being part of our group, stop by the Sewing Room on Tuesday mornings. The group provides materials and instruction for those interested in learning hooking, and people interested in other arts using fiber are invited to join our group. The project in the picture was completed by Coni Arseneau and is a good example of mixing a couple of different fiber techniques to form a finished project. On vacation in Hawaii, Coni visited an art boutique and noticed a piece of art that combined macramé with crochet as the center. Coni used this idea but instead combined punch rug and crochet. Wool yarn is used as the material in the rug and cotton crochet thread was used for the crochet. She used tile in her bathroom, pictured at bottom, as the theme for the design. This piece was designed to hang in the same room as the tile.

SCOV residents interested in joining, please visit the shop and speak to the monitor about scheduling training. The featured artist this month is Rich Rozehnal. This cuff bracelet was a good pandemic project, because it took a lot of time, planning and troubleshooting to complete. He got the idea from a similar piece that his sister bought from a high-end Sterling silver cuff bracelet jewelry store. It started with eight feet of 16-gauge sterling silver wire, followed by cutting, shaping, soldering and randomly rearranging the wires. He then added six bezel cups with four-millimeter Sleeping Beauty turquoise from Globe, Arizona. It is definitely one of a kind, but he hopes to do many similar ones. Please stop by the Silversmith shop windows and see the diverse variety of beautiful jewelry displayed.

Our very own club member, Lee, has just completed this amazing feat: a forty-squarefoot kitchen ceiling. A oneof-a-kind artistic project that Lee Jacobson holding just one piece of a stained glass he and his wife, “skylight “ ceiling Judy, enjoy every day. Congratulations Lee, on fulfilling this awesome goal! Lee joined the SCOV Glass Club six years ago. He loves working with his hands, and thought the studio would be a perfect fit. Lee’s favorite aspect of the studio: it is complete with any kind of tool and equipment necessary for creating with glass. Lee serves on the Sun City Vistoso Foundation board, enjoys golfing and loves giving of his time to local charities. Pertinent information is listed above. Monitors are on duty Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. We encourage you to visit our amazing studio. We promote helpfulness.

When discord in our country, our communities, even within our inner circles, seems more prevalent than ever, club member John Padgett’s poem helps us think about bridging the gaps and why we need: Connection I’ll not speak of love / love is too ephemeral / So what do our souls need? Connection Connection with: Colleagues to share / ideas and experiments / Friends to share / joy and sorrow / Family who share / genes and history If we are open to connection / we appreciate / our colleagues / friends / family / and love them / for how we are enriched Don’t forget strangers / they bring / new experience And with connection they become / colleagues / friends / even family Connection Fighting Covid has cost us both smiles and handshakes, but we’re getting them back and we can still aim to connect by listening respectfully and seeking to find areas of agreement rather than dissent. Reading and writing poetry might help. Join us.

This club provides an enjoyable monthly social evening during fall and spring. Get to know some of your SCOV neighbors who enjoy cooking and eating interesting food. Our four dinners in members’ homes (December-March) provide relaxing fun as we explore various cuisines (e.g., German, Indian, South American) or get creative with more ambiguous themes, such as “Color.” February’s theme was “Songs;” it was surprising how many songs reference foods (cherry pie, anyone?). Since everyone brings part of the shared meal, the hosts can be spared huge effort. Each dining group decides how to translate the month’s theme into menus. We also have catered events and an occasional summer potluck. Visit our website to see more photos and details. Questions? Please contact a club officer.

All dances are taught before dancing to music Folk dancing is a wonderful way to exercise both your body and mind while socializing in the company of a warm and welcoming group. We encourage everyone who is fully vaccinated and boostered to join us. No experience, no partners required, to tour the world in music and dance. We review each dance prior to dancing, keeping in mind that the only mistake you can make is not having fun. Bonus: no meetings, no minutes, no dues; just dance, dance, dance. There is even a club website which lists each week’s dances along with a video link to each dance for those who like to watch or review dances at home. Please give it a try. Questions? Come and see, check out the website or call Raven.

If you are leaving for the summer: be sure to cover or leave running any water feature in your yard to avoid stagnation and mosquitoes.

Aquatone is a toning water workout that incorporates a variety of rhythmic body movements performed in the water. This aquatic exercise class enhances cardiovascular fitness and muscular endurance. We meet at the AFC pool. There is no fee to join the club or the class. The teachers are club member volunteers. Participants should be able to do a basic swim stroke. Items used in the class are buoys, boards, noodles, balls and a fitness band. Most items are available at the pool. We assign an experienced member to a newcomer to help learn the various movements. A great workout in a fun class.

Arthritis Water Pres. Sherry Olivier sherryolivier55@gmail.com Sec. Melanie Livingston meljean178@yahoo.com Mon., Wed., Fri. 1 PM Oct.-Apr.; 10 AM May-Sep.; AFC/Pool

The warm weather has returned so we will be meeting regularly at 1 PM on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. If you have arthritis or stiffness of joints for any reason, our class is for you. Water exercises are easier and less painful than those on the ground because the buoyancy lessens the impact on joints. Membership dues are only $5/year and new members are welcome.

Pilates Mary Ayers 520-638-7916 scov.pilates@gmail.com Mon., 3 PM, Thu., 1:30 PM, AFC/Studio

To get the full benefits of Pilates, a person should understand the basic principles. It takes a little time and patience, as the exercises you perform may be different from others you are familiar with, but they are fun, interesting and challenging. Pilates can even become addictive. It teaches proper balance, breathing, how to focus on your core (your abdomen and back muscles) and movement control. The constant movement from one exercise to another results in your developing more strength and stamina. Even posture is improved. The spine lengthens and joint flexibility and mobility increase. SCOV has two experienced instructors who teach mat Pilates classes and they modify many of the moves for us, if necessary. The cost is only $8/class and annual club dues are $20 pp. Please stop by and watch a class. Call Mary.

At the request of the instructors, tai chi masters Jose Hernandez Rivera and Donna Drazenovich, we are all to wear masks and participate in social distancing. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that involves slow focused movements. Because of the benefits for balance, strength, and improved breathing, it is an exercise especially suitable for seniors.

Scrabble Jan Fischer 520-825-2401 fischer_janice@comcast.net Fri., 1-3 PM, Desert Oasis

In 1933, Alfred Butts, a New York City architect, noticed that ...“there is one thing that keeps word games from being as popular as card games: they had no scoring method.” Butts thought about a game where scores were kept and competition among players changed and Lexiko was born, a scoring game that he refined in the early 1930s and 1940s. Later, this game became Criss Cross Words. In 1948, Butts finally was able to secure a patent, copyright and manufacturer, and changed the name to Scrabble. Today the Scrabble game is found in three of every five American homes.

Tony Masterjohn tmasterjohn15@gmail.com VP Training Doug Brown wizisland@comcast.net Sun.-Sat., 8 AM-9 PM www.scovpb.org The Legend of Carpe Dinkem: Bill Reimbold began pickleballing with SCOV in 2009. One year later, Pickleball Central began purchasing his pickleball jewelry, and in 2019, Bill signed a royalty contract with them, licensing them to sell his Carpe Dinkem pickleball design. Carpe Dinkem is a riff on Carpe Diem, encouraging players to enjoy, celebrate and play pickleball. To protect his Carpe Dinkem logo on shirt logo, nine months ago, Bill started the trademark registration process through the U.S. Patent Office website. They have an application you can submit online, or you can hire a patent attorney, since the process is a little complicated. On February 22, 2022, Bill’s trademark Carpe Dinkem was officially registered. This is a fitting date, as numerologists suggest “2” brings about “a-ha” moments and innovation.
