Guadalupe County invites public to Veterans Outreach Center grand opening

(Seguin) – Guadalupe County’s appreciation for all veterans will be unveiled this week.

Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says he’s proud to announce the official opening of the newly constructed Veterans Outreach Center this Wednesday. The center is located at the old Seguin Hospital and former Head Start building at 205 E. Weinert St.

Kutscher says for years, the county has

envisioned this facility that will offer specialized services and resources to veterans in not only Guadalupe County but surrounding communities.

“The project really was a conceptual idea that took place around 2018. We had a small group of veterans that participated in some programs in Guadalupe County that actually came up with the idea of just trying to provide

more convenient and efficient services, so we planned for more multiple years, came up with a conceptual design and then started looking for funding and now we finally got to the point of construction and completion,” said Kutscher.

Kutscher says the overall idea was to provide veteran services all under one roof, especially for those who find it challenging to travel out of town for many of these same services. Opening, pg. 3

Burn victim succumbs to injuries

(Redwood) — An elderly woman, who suffered burns in a house fire over a week ago, has died. Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder says 77-year old Paula Cordero died Friday, Aug. 4 at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. On July 29, Cordero and a 53year old man suffered burns in a house fire at their home in the 1900 block of Poplar Street in the San Marcos area. Both tried to escape the structure fire, but were critically injured by the flames. Pinder says while Cordero died six days after the fire, the male victim, who’s name has not bee released, remains in the intensive care unit at BAMC.

Pinder says the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but he says as of this time, the fire marshal’s office has not been able to rule out an electrical malfunction as a contributing factor to the fire.

There appeared to be no working smoke alarms inside

the home. Pinder says smoke detectors may have made a big difference in the outcome of this case, and he says they recommend all homes have working smoke detectors — no matter what type of home that it is. He says that can be the “difference between life and death in a fire emergency.”

In addition to the injuries, Pinder says the fire caused extensive damage to the home and also damaged vehicles that were parked in the driveway.

The fire was reported on Saturday, July 29, with several fire departments responding to the scene. The list of departments includes the York Creek Volunteer Fire Department, San Marcos Fire Department, Martindale Fire Department, Guadalupe County Fire Rescue, San Marcos South Hays EMS, Guadalupe County Sheriff’s Office, and the Guadalupe County Fire Marshal’s Office.

Community invited to help cool off area firefighters

(Guadalupe County) – Despite it being 100 degrees plus, area fire fighters continue to battle massive grass fires. Guadalupe County Fire Marshal Patrick Pinder says firefighters have spent much of the last few weeks if not all summer fighting a series of grass fires countywide.

Firefighters on Wednesday battled a grass fire on Branch Road. A total of five acres caught fire after negligence by a welder. Pinder says a citation was issued by fire marshals for the burn ban violations.

After a hard day’s work, he says fire fighters only returned the

next day to battle a six-acre fire in Kingsbury.

The continued heat, Pinder says, has not made things easy. Requests for bottled water or Gatorades have also come in from area fire departments. One example came from York Creek Volunteer Fire Department which posted on its social media site that water "would be greatly appreciated and there would be a bunch of firefighters that would jump for joy!"

Although from York Creek VFD, all area fire departments say they could use some extra relief.

Residents wishing to donate

bottled water or other needs by a department are asked to reach out to the various fire departments in the area.

Local woman honored as Guadalupe County Woman of Influence

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Area Chamber of Commerce recently recognized the top female leader in Guadalupe County.

Local businesswoman Krista Moreno was named this year's Guadalupe County Woman of Influence. Moreno was introduced by last year's winner of the award Deana Henk, of the Guadalupe Healthcare Network. Henk described all the volunteer work that Moreno does on behalf of this community, which is why she was honored with this award.

“Krista is the epitome of community service. For the past 20 years, she has dedicated countless hours to advocating for the advancement of students and teachers of the greatest Seguin ISD district. She served on the Seguin Education Foundation Board of Directors for 15 years and currently serves as the vice-president of development as well as chair of the Celebration of Excellence Committee. Krista was also the organizer of the Political Action Committees of 2019, 2022 and support of the major bonds needed for the Seguin ISD. These bonds have resulted in new facilities for staff, students, and the

community. Among these are the new Matador Football Stadium, A.J.B. Middle School rebuild and numerous improvements throughout the district. She is also on the board for the Communities in Schools of South-Central Texas which provides basis needs and academic assistance to students. In her spare time, she is an active member of the Four Rivers Association of Realtors and is a commissioner on the city of Seguin Planning and Zoning Commission,” said Henk.

Moreno thanked the chamber for the recognition, and said she loves this community. She says she grew up here and loved raising her family here, and that's one of the reasons why she thinks it's so important for people to get involved in the community.

“We grow as a community

“We are going to have our veteran services officers located in the facility like we had both in Seguin and Schertz right now but then the center has space for partnering agencies to offer new local services that will include professional mental health counseling, claim benefits advising, specialized counseling for combat veterans and overall guidance and direction just to empower veterans and so we do have a handful of partner agencies that are going to be located in the facility along with Guadalupe County Veteran Service Officers,” said Kutscher.

Kutscher says the look and overall design of the building was especially important to county leaders and is proud of those results.

“It’s very very exciting for all of us at the county especially commissioners court members. This is something that everybody has been invested in. Standing there, looking at the building now complete – thinking of the front of the building

by working together and I have been blessed to be surrounded and supported by some of the hardest working people in the world and we have done some amazing things for Seguin ISD and our facilities. I believe teachers, staff, and administrators who show up daily to teach and care for our children deserve all our praise and support. Thank you to my family and friends who have helped ride alongside me to make Seguin a great place to live, work and play. I encourage you all to reach out and get involved and become a thread in the fabric that is Seguin. Thank you again for this incredible honor,” said Moreno.

Moreno was recognized during the Texas Women of Influence Gala held Wednesday in the Coliseum. The two-day event, which celebrates and uplifts women, continued on Thursday with its annual conference. The activities included guest speakers and several breakout sessions for attendees.

The chamber also used this year’s event to recognize the Texas Woman of Influence award winner Ruth Hughes. Hughes is the former Texas Secretary of State, who has a strong history of serving the Lone Star State.

from the Memorial Plaza, the flags, the brick work that has been done there, the plaques memorializing individuals who gave the ultimate sacrifice in different conflicts in our history. It has a lot of meaning and a lot of importance so it’s a very very special place. I think it’s going to be something that everybody is going to be really proud of,” said Kutscher.

Kutscher says he’s excited to show off the building and invites the public to this Wednesday’s opening celebration at 10 a.m.

“All of us at Guadalupe County definitely want to extend an invitation to all veterans and community members in Guadalupe County and surrounding counties to attend our opening celebration. We hope everybody comes out, celebrates a very exciting project with us and ultimately providing the best and most efficient services we can to veterans,” said Kutscher.

The opening celebration will include a guest presentation by 12th Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps, Gene Overstreet. Tours and refreshments will follow.

Seguin River Monsters Win TCL Championship as Monkerud Silences Bombers

(Bryan) -- The Segun River Monsters are your 2023 Texas Collegiate League Champions.

Seguin beat the Brazos Valley Bombers 3-1 Saturday night in Bryan in the TCL Championship Game.  Navarro High School grad Jaxen Monkerud started the game, picking up the win by tossing five shutout innings before giving way to three relievers who kept the Bombers at bay as the Monsters earned their first TCL championship in their second season.

Seguin got all of their runs in the top of the fifth. Xavier Arias started the inning with a single. Groundouts by Damian Rodriguez and Connor Kaiser advanced Arias to third base. After a Nyan Hayes walk, Garret Felix would double to drive in Arias with the first run of the game. Alex Gonzalez would follow with a double to drive in Hayes and Felix to make the score 3-0.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bombers got two runners on with one out but Monkerud was able to get a strikeout and a flyout to escape damage and end his night on the hill. River Monster coach Tony Perez would go to his bullpen to preserve the lead. Monkerud finished the game with three strikeouts while surrendering only three hits in five scoreless innings.

Relievers Daelen Caraway, Zach Boyer and Dalton Buckingham combined to go the final four innings in the championship victory. Buckingham, a Texas State junior, threw 2.1 scoreless innings to earn the save for Seguin.

The River Monsters got to the championship game by beating the Victoria Generals in the TCL semifinals, two games to one.

All But 10 States Neglect Maternal Mental Health

(Undated) -- Nearly every state in the country is neglecting maternal mental health care according to a study just released by the nonprofit Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health. The report gave all but ten US states a “D” or “F” grade, and only one state - California - received a grade higher than a “C.” The report used several factors in it’s grading, including access to therapists, treatment programs, and access to maternal screenings. The report was made in partnership with researchers at George Washington University, and is the first of it’s kind released by the group.

Leprosy Cases Rise In Florida

(Tallahassee, FL) -- Cases of leprosy are spiking in Florida. The CDC released an August report saying Central Florida is responsible for almost one-fifth of the nation’s leprosy cases and 81-percent of those detected in the Sunshine State. The CDC clarified earlier reports a travel advisory had been put in place by saying there is currently no advisory for travel to Florida. The disease primarily impacts someone’s skin and parts of the nervous system, causing nerves to become swollen. Scientists believe there are several causes to the infections, including bacteria in soil, armadillos and person-to-person contact.

Rise of COVID-19 Cases In New York

(New York, NY) -- COVID cases are up throughout New York. The State Department of Heath says they’re seeing a 22-percent increase in COVIDrelated hospitalizations compared to last week, and the number of reported cases is 55-percent higher in the same span. Although experts say there is no reason to be alarmed at the uptick of cases at this point, New York’s health commissioner James McDonald is now recommending anyone exhibiting possible symptoms of COVID-19 to get tested as a precaution.

Makers Of Ozempic, Mounjaro Sued

(Undated) -- The makers of weight loss drugs Ozempic and Mounjaro are being sued for allegedly failing to warn patients about the risk of severe gastrointestinal problems. A Louisiana woman filed the suit against Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly Wednesday. The lawsuit says she took Ozempic for more than a year before trying Mounjaro and ended up with vomiting, stomach pain, loss of teeth and hospitalization.
