06 | AUTUMN 2022 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK HIP | JUDGE JERRY'S TOP TIPS Check out these handy competition top tips from HIP LOY Head Judge, Jerry Whiteley, CIPHE.

Read any documentation that’s been sent to you a few weeks before you set off. It might require you to bring signed paperwork

8

4

Prepare your tools the day before, oil your tube cutters and clean off spirit levels. Charge power tools

Get a good night’s sleep the night before so you feel fresh and can concentrate properly on the day

3

2

Arrive a little earlier than the start time so you can adjust to the atmosphere to calm nerves

5

Practice pipe bending. In particular, crossovers and offsets, with the standard 15mm or 22mm air gaps. Use recyclable tube, such as Tectite, instead of using expensive copper

7

Check what the competition PPE requirements are and bring them, including a good kneeling pad to help prevent aches and keep you feeling fresh

6

Practice soldering. Soldering must be seen all around the joint with a one touch point. Only flux the pipe, not the fitting, to reduce residual flux. Have a damp cloth to wipe off flux, only once the joint has cooled otherwise the solder may turn a dull grey from cooling too quickly and you’ll lose marks

Q What products will help improve a customer’s experience in their bathroom?

THE EXPERIENCEECO-SMART

08 | AUTUMN 2022 > WWW.HIP-MAGAZINE.CO.UK HIP | ECO-SMART SHOWERING

A With energy bills rising and consumers becoming increasingly aware of their impact on the environment, recommending products that will reduce the amount of water and energy a consumer uses can be advantageous for installers. However, there may be concerns that reducing the amount of water a shower uses will make it less powerful.

By mixing air along with our special flow limitations, Hansgrohe has developed EcoSmart technology –which can reduce the amount of water that a shower consumes by up to 60%. With various styles available, incorporating EcoSmart ensures that customers won’t have to sacrifice shower performance to be more eco-conscious in their bathroom.

For more information, check out the dedicated hansgrohe website for www.pro.hansgrohe.co.ukinstallers:

“DIFFERENT SHOWER HEAD SPRAY PATTERNS CAN PROVIDE YOUR CUSTOMERS WITH A LUXURIOUSEXPERIENCE”SHOWERING TECHNOLOGYECOSMART

Here, Keith Dyson, National Technical Sales Manager at Hansgrohe UK, answers questions for installers on how to create an at home spa experience.

With the advantage of micro spray technology, PowderRain is much finer than conventional shower jets; with six ultra-fine outlets per nozzle, spray is transformed into thousands of micro droplets, designed to envelop the body in a gentle cocoon of water.

Taking inspiration from wellness retreats and spas to create a dream bathroom has been a long-standing trend amongst consumers.

A Shower heads that incorporate different spray patterns can provide your customers with a luxurious showering experience, without breaking the bank. Over the years, hansgrohe Group has put significant investment into spray technology development, and key to this is the renowned and industry acclaimed PowderRain.

Q What products will help my customers reduce the amount of water they use?

HOW THEY WORK

An air vent releases air from a system that is being filled with water, and automatically isolates this air - preventing water loss, damage and wastage from the Withinsystem.theair vent is a float, which controls an automatic venting mechanism. Some air vents, such as the Caleffi 5026 Robocal®, are also anti-rotational and antivibration, thus preventing any loss of performance from external movement.

IT’S WHAT’S INSIDE THAT COUNTS!

TOP TIP AIR VENTS SHOULD BE FITTED IN PLACES THAT ARE EASILY ACCESSIBLE, WHERE THERE IS NO RISK OF FREEZING. “MAINTAINING THE QUALITY OF A SYSTEM RELIES ON MAINTAINING THE QUALITY OF THE AIR VENT” For more information go to:airRobocal®www.altecnic.co.ukvent INSTALLATION An air vent such as the Robocal® can be installed in various ways, ■■■■■vertically:onairseparatorsonhydraulicseparatorsonmanifoldsonrisersand, generallyinpartsof the system where a concentration of air pockets is expected.

When a set quantity of air has been expelled, the water fills the chamber again, which pushes the float upwards thereby closing the air vent.

One of the key features of the Robocal® is that it shuts off the water supply when the valve is being removed, thus allowing for much faster, easier inspection and maintenance.

When enough air collects inside the chamber, the air replaces the water and lowers the float point. This causes the automatic valve to open and the air to be releasedout of the system.

Air vents are fitted on almost every system, but what makes a good

Maintaining the quality of a system relies on maintaining the quality of the air vent.

THE V iCARE THERMOSTAT

Additionally, you could select an internal load compensating ViCare Thermostat which would also modulate boiler flow temperatures and reduce energy usage. At a list price of less than £160, the cost would pay back within less than one year at today's prices.

We recommend customers optimise their heating schedule to fewer programming settings, avoiding the central heating warming up and cooling down on a frequent basis. Instead, they can allow their heating system time to heat up and maintain that desired temperature. The temperature can be set back at night, to a minimum of 12°C.

“THE COST OF INTRODUCING THESE CONTROLS WOULD BE PAID BACK IN A MATTER OFDIDMONTHS”YOUKNOW?

The Vitodens 200 range comes with a weather compensation controller as standard.

All Viessmann boilers contain weather compensation software as standard and only require the addition of an outside weather compensation sensor, costing around £30. Used in conjunction with the free ViCare app, the cost of introducing these controls would be paid back in a matter of months at today's energy prices and go on to comfortably deliver savings of 15%.

WHAT IS SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY (SHC)?

SHC is the amount of energy required to raise 1kg of a substance by 1°C, i.e. how much energy it takes to heat something!

■ There are 1000 joules in a kilojoule so we can write this as 4.186 kJ/kg°C

■ It takes 4186 Joules of energy to heat 1kg of water by 1°C

You can’t get a 5.2325 kW heater, so move on to Step 3!

USE

To work out the temperature rise required, take the lower temperature away from the higher temperature. i.e. 55°C - 10°C = 45°C. THIS CALCULATION: Litres x Temp Rise x 4.186kJ in your numbers: x (55-10) x 4.186 x 45 x 4.186 it takes 18,837 kJ to heat 100 litres of water by 45°C. 32

Divide this by 60 to give minutes and you get 52 minutes and 19.5 seconds. That’s how long it will take to heat the water to 55°C.

This means a 1kW heater would take 5.2325 hours to heat the water cylinder.

2.Answer: If

We could also say that to heat the water up in 1 hour the heater would need to be rated at 5.2325 kW.

Well done! You can now look at the capacity of a cylinder, work out how much time different size kW elements would take to heat water up and then select the correct one! Using the calculations above, how long will it take to heat up 150L cylinder, with a cold supply of 11oC and a target temperature of 60oC? you install a 4kW element, how many minutes will it take to achieve the target temperature?

100

You have a 100 litre cylinder and it is filled with water at 10°C and you want to heat it up to 55°C.

Next, to calculate the amount of power (Kilowatt hours) required to heat the water in one hour, you need to divide the answer by 3,600 (the seconds in one hour) 18,837 ÷ 3,600= 5.2325 kWh

Once you have an employer in place who has agreed to offer you an apprenticeship, they can find a training provider to support you with the training element of your programme.
