WOMEN’S HEALTH WEEK KICKS OFF ON MOTHER’S DAY

A Timely Reminder for Women and Girls to Make Good Health a Priority

With National Women’s Health Week fast approaching, it’s the ideal time for women of all ages to talk to their doctor about regular health screenings, preventive medicine and what you can do to focus on your health and wellness. Taking Action Against Breast Cancer Early detection is a key factor in winning the battle against breast cancer. This all-too-common disease can typically be detected earlier, when it is more treatable, through breast self-exams, physical exams by a trained healthcare provider and recommended annual mammograms.

Women and Stroke – When Every Minute Matters According to the American Stroke Association®, women are at higher risk of stroke than men. Women should be aware of additional risk factors unique to women, including pregnancy, preeclampsia (high blood pressure that develops during pregnancy), migraines with aura and birth control pills.

22

SOCIALIFE

Comprehensive Close-to-Home Heart Care According to the American Heart Association®, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both women and men in the United States. Unfortunately, because heart attack symptoms vary between men and women, women may be less likely to recognize the signs of a heart attack and could delay seeking much-needed emergency care. Know the symptoms. These are just a handful of the many healthcare services available at South Texas Health System. Women’s health matters. It is never too early, or too late, to start thinking about yours.

WHAT THE!~

ETIQUESTIONS Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa

I am super excited because I have several graduation ceremonies to attend this Spring. What is the proper attire for a commencement ceremony? It is graduation season, and such a good question! A good rule of thumb is to dress business casual or as you would for a religious service. For women, that means a dark dress, skirt, or pants, a light-colored blouse, and dark shoes. For men, well-ironed khakis or dark trousers with a dress shirt and possibly a tie. Avoid wearing shorts, jeans, tennis shoes, or sandals.

I love to meet my friends at the coffee shop, but I am always surprised by how rude some patrons can be. What is your advice for talking on the phone in the coffee shop? I see it happen all the time. Unless you expect the call to last under a minute, it is a good idea not to take a phone call while you are in a coffee shop. People may use these spaces for work while other people use these spaces for relaxation. If your phone rings while you are in a coffee shop, 1) answer and ask if you can call the person back, 2) take the call outside, or 3) pack up your things and move on.

I am new to playing golf, and I want to understand the basic golf etiquette rules. What are a few things I need to consider? Golf is a courteous game. Most golfers appreciate the rules and established etiquette on the course. First, avoid being the slowest player. Assess the pace of your play frequently. Second, don’t lose your cool. Never throw a club, use profanity, or sulk around a course. It’s extremely bad etiquette. Finally, be reliable. If you have a golf date, keep it.

Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa, Ph.D. is a wife, mother, and educator living in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. She is a graduate of Our Lady of the Lake University with a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies. In addition, she holds an Associate of Arts degree in Education from McLennan Community College, Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Texas – Pan American, and a Master of Arts in Educational Supervision from the University of Texas – Pan American. Dr. Baggerly-Hinojosa’s current research is focused on servant leadership, gender issues in leadership, and leadership communication. www.leadershipempowermentgroup.com

COMMUNITY HISTORY

Letters and Letter Writing at MOSTHistory

by Francisco Guajardo, CEO at MOSTHistory

The Museum of South Texas History holds veritable treasures in separate collections of letters .

from one of the salt lakes as they marched from Corpus Christi into the challenging terrain of South Texas.

The collection of letters from Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Sgt. Freddy González is such an example, as the Edinburg native wrote more than 150 letters to his mother from Vietnam. The museum also holds a collection of letters from Mexican American War Captain Charles Henry Chapman, who wrote letters to his wife between 1846 and 1847.

In a letter from March 27, 1846, Chapman wrote, “Many a poor fellow was sadly disappointed when on leaving the column and running hastily to these ponds and dipping up a cup full, would find it as salt and brine.”

The museum featured three Chapman letters at a conference on the history of the Mexican American War. In one letter, Chapman ruminates on his thirsty soldiers who mistakenly drank

46

SOCIALIFE

On May 2, 1846, Chapman described his Mexican adversaries as “these cowardly scoundrels” who were “wiling (sic) to commit murder upon one or two defenseless individuals but dare not face a body of men prepared to fight.” When Sgt. Freddy González arrived in North Carolina for basic training during the

summer of 1965, he promptly began his letter-writing campaign. He wrote five letters to his mother, Dolia, in his first week away from home. Sgt. González’s letters persisted between 1965 and 1968, shortly before dying during the Tet Offensive at the Battle of Hue. In his penultimate letter, Sgt. González mourned the passing of

his childhood friend, Victor Espinoza. On Jan. 24, 1968, Sgt. González wrote, “Mother, I was shocked to hear that Victor got killed, but it’s things that will happen in war...I hope all the people back home remember Victor cause he didn’t die for nothing.” The museum has used Sgt. González’s letter to engage local teachers and

students in the art of letter writing. The response has been positive and enthusiastic. One teacher noted, “We need these kinds of historical documents to inspire our students to write.” It is clear the museum must continue its role as the preserver and presenter of regional history and heritage.

As we face the healthcare challenges in our area, El Milagro Clinic’s Board of Directors remains committed to continue serving our underserved community’s primary, preventive and behavioral health care needs. OUR HISTORY In 1996 when El Milagro Clinic first opened its doors, it offered services out of a three-exam room facility in downtown McAllen. As the need for medical services for the underserved became more evident, a new facility was built through the collaborative efforts of the City of McAllen, the County of Hidalgo, and the now Texas Department of State Health Services. This new 20,000-square-foot building, located in the center of McAllen’s medical district, represents a community investment of over 3 million dollars. Since then, El Milagro has provided access to affordable primary health care, disease prevention, and behavioral health care services to the lowincome population of the Rio Grande Valley. OUR PROGRAM Our Integrated Behavioral Healthcare model provides primary and preventive health care services that emphasize patient education, nutrition classes, and wellness activities, one that

establishes a medical home and offers affordable services. Some of our services include medical consultations, women’s health, laboratory services, prescription assistance, nutrition education, mental health counseling, diabetes prevention and diabetes management, food distribution, and physical and wellness activities. WHO WE SERVE Our patient population consists of individuals and families that are uninsured, underinsured, unemployed, or marginally employed who cannot access more expensive private physicians. We serve those at or below 200% FPL guidelines. The Clinic provides residents quality healthcare services on a sliding scale fee basis. COVID-19 Since mid-July, El Milagro Clinic has provided access to FREE COVID-19 testing to over 6000 individuals in our community. Our testing site follows the CDC’s considerations on who should get tested and works by appointment only. We believe that awareness is the first step in taking proper precautions, and we are hopeful that together we will beat this virus.

Vote for Greater Opportunities for Our Children!

ELECT

VICTOR PEREZ FOR TEXAS STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION DISTRICT 2

POLITCAL ADV. PAID FOR BY THE CANDIDATE.

MY PRIORITIES FOR SUCCESS: Responsible Management

Ideas are only as good as the funding behind them. Managing the Texas Permanent School Fund in a smart and efficient manner is key to making sure our schools have the resources they need.

Fighting for Teachers

Our Teachers don’t just educate our children, they act as protectors, counselors, friends, and help instill the values of a good citizen in every child they teach. Unfortunately, teachers have been shortchanged for years. I will advocate for teacher pay raises, and the benefits they deserve!

Unity

Communication is the key to solving problems. Over a career that spans over 30 years, the most important skill a public servant can have is being able to reach fair resolutions between people who don’t agree. Victor is committed to unifying our community and proactively navigate through important issues.

Accountability

A public servant is beholden to the public they serve. This is a principle that Victor has practiced in every public office he has ever held. Victor will continue to be accessible to the public in the best and the worst of times.

Transparency

Transparency can only be achieved with the three O’s. Open Door, Open Mind, Open Books. Not only does the public deserve to know how every penny is spent, how policies are implemented, but also to have a say in the decisionmaking process. Together we can shape the Texas Education System into an environment where all can prosper.

“Amidst the uncertainty that our community faces, we need collaborative, fairminded, resourceful and compassionate leaders.”

Vote Victor Perez for Texas State Board of Education District 2! RUN-OFF

On March 1 we VOTED and the people awarded our campaign with the most votes. Come VOTE one more time and let’s finish the job on May 24!

WHAT TO DO…

IQUETTE T E P Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa

I am hosting a party at my home, and I have dogs. What should I keep in mind in my planning? If you have guests in your home and your dog is overly excited to the point of making your guests uncomfortable, put your dog in the other room or outside. Inform your guests beforehand that you have dogs because some people have allergies or fears of pets.

I never know what to do when people approach me while walking my dog. What is the general rule? This is an excellent question because not everyone is comfortable around dogs. Keep your dog close to you and stay alert to others. Your leash should be short enough to prevent your dog from contacting or jumping on passersby. If your dog does something to upset someone (jumping up, barking), apologize to them and take measures to prevent the situation from reoccurring.

What is the number one etiquette rule you want new pet owners to know? Scoop your poop! Pet owners have a responsibility to manage their bet’s behavior and follow certain rules of etiquette. It is very important to clean up after your pet goes to the bathroom. Bring several bags on your walks to be sure you have enough.

Chiquis: Chiquis is a one-year old lab mix who is calm and friendly with everyone she meets. She came to the shelter in April 2022, and since her arrival, staff has noticed that she’s likely housetrained and is fabulous on a leash. She’d be a great first pet for a new family!

Ravioli: Ravioli is a young adult mutt mix who weighs about 30 pounds. He came to the shelter as a stray, but he appears to be great with other animals. We’re still learning all about him, but we know he’ll be a great match for a new family!

Sweet Pea: This two-year old bully breed mix came to us microchipped, but her family never claimed her, so she’s looking for her new perfect match. In the shelter, she has a roommate and gets along well with other dogs, but her favorite time of day is when she gets treats!

G.I. Jane: G.I. Jane is a two-year old Belgian Malinois mix, and true to her breed, she’s looking for a job! She gets along well with other pets and loves to play. If you are looking for a partner to be by your side, check her out!
