Patients throughout the Rio Grande Valley rely on the general surgeons at South Texas Health System® Clinics to treat a wide range of diseases and conditions. The surgeons are involved every step of the way, including during pre-operative care, which determines whether a patient is a candidate for surgery or whether there is a less invasive, more suitable alternative. They are also trained to use minimally invasive methods, when applicable, which may result in faster recovery times and decreased risk of infection, among other benefits.

Individual results may vary. There are risks associated with any surgical procedure. Talk with your doctor about these risks to find out if minimally invasive surgery is right for you. For language assistance, disability accommodations and the nondiscrimination notice, visit our website.

MISSION FESTIVAL OF FRIGHTS

Photography by City of Mission

The City of Mission hosted its Annual Halloween Festival of Frights, and it was a huge success. Thousands of little goblins, ghouls, and superheroes joined the city for a howling good time at the Mission Event Center.

“This was an amazing event for our community,” Mission Police Chief Cesar Torres. “Safety is always our top priority in Mission, and this was a great alternative for families. There were free hot dogs, free candies, and raspas, and it was just a great outing for citizens.”

The event was free and open to the public. Kids got to roam through a haunted house, enjoyed carnival rides, and prowl through the trunkor-treat area! There were also moon jumps, carnival games, and FANG-tastic music and entertainment.

The Nutcracker, with its beautiful costumes, dreamlike score, and delightful roles, has enchanted audiences for over 130 years. The classic Christmas story is a fairy tale ballet centered on a family’s Christmas Eve celebration and a toy soldier coming to life. Alexandre Dumas Père’s adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s story, “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King,” was set to music by Tchaikovsky and first choreographed by Marius Petipa premiering a week before Christmas 1892 in St. Petersburg, Russia. On Christmas eve of 1944, this magical ballet debuted in the U.S. with the San Francisco Ballet. Doria Avila, the founding director and choreographer of the Rio Grande Valley Ballet, first staged this holiday classic in 1972 for Valley audiences.

RIO GRANDE VALLEY BALLET
MEMORIES Rio Grande Valley Ballet celebrates
Anniversary performance of the Nutcracker

Deborah Case entered the RGV dance scene as a principal dancer in 1976 and, with Avila’s retirement in 1993, became the RGV Ballet’s second artistic director. Case is a classically trained dancer and received her education degree from Texas Christian University. She teaches in the Vaganova (Russian) dance method and holds an official ballet certificate from the Bolshoi Ballet’s Academy. For 43 years, Case has dedicated her artistic career to dance and dance education in the Rio Grande Valley. This year, she celebrates the 50th-anniversary performance of the RGV Ballet’s staging of the Nutcracker with some very special additions.

“For more than 30 years, I’ve dreamed of the dancers performing with a live orchestra,” Case beamed. This year, that dream has come true through the orchestra that Dr. Norman Gamboa has put together. Gamboa, director of orchestral activities at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and conductor of the Rio Grande Youth Symphony, contacted Case in October 2022 about conducting an orchestra for the Nutcracker. “I couldn’t believe it,” Case mused. “This has all come together magically and with so many blessings.”

In addition to the live orchestral performance, Carol J. Brown, director of Colibrí children’s choir, will bring to life the snow scene with the Colibrí Alumni Choir. The original score for the Waltz of the Snowflakes in Act I includes a wordless chorus. “There are 18 measures of snow singing in the original Nutcracker,” Case stated. “This is going to be really special.”

Along with the live performance, live orchestra, and live chorus, Case has also brought new choreography and costumes to this 50th-anniversary production. Working with German choreographer Alex Ossadnik, there will be a new staging of the mouse battle and the Arabian dances, among other scenes. “The new choreography is spectacular,” Case stated. “There will be more people on stage. He’s [Ossadnik] really good at filling the stage with interesting scenarios.”

While some of the costumes may be new, they are still in the beloved tradition of the classic Nutcracker— Clara’s flowing nightgown, the toy soldier’s uniform, the magical sugar plum fairies, and of course, the adorable Mother Ginger.

Hundreds of dancers have performed in the Rio Grande Valley Ballet’s Nutcracker. To celebrate them, Case is holding an alumni reunion for all former Nutcracker dancers on December 10th at 1:30 PM at the McAllen Performing Arts Tower Lounge. Yloy Ybarra, New York-based dancer/ choreographer and RGV Ballet Alum will be staging a new overture starring the Nutcracker alums. “This is an exciting reunion for us all,” Case said. “Most of our alums have never performed in the Performing Arts Center, so this will be a magical moment for them, too.”

Audiences, young and old, will love the 50th Anniversary performance of the Rio Grande Valley Ballet’s The Nutcracker on December 10-11, 2022. Tickets are available at the McAllen Performing Arts Center or on Ticketmaster.com. To learn more, visit RGVballet.com.

Rio Grande Regional Hospital

PROVIDES DIABETES EDUCATION AND SUPPORT

An estimated 76,000 people in the Rio Grande Valley have diabetes, and as many as 3 in 5 of those people will need some form of hospital or emergency services. Providing diabetes education and resources to the communities they serve is a way Rio Grande Regional Hospital keeps its commitment to delivering highquality care you can trust.

Diabetes is a build-up of sugar – glucose – in the blood that happens when the body doesn’t convert the food you eat into energy as it should. Usually, our bodies make a hormone called insulin in the pancreas to help break down food into energy. Sometimes the pancreas stops producing insulin, or the body stops being able to use insulin effectively. That’s when sugar builds up in the blood, causing high blood sugar, which can lead to a variety of symptoms. The first signs of high blood sugar can include:

• Frequent urination

• Being very thirsty and/or hungry

• Weight loss

• Blurred vision

• Feeling very tired

• Wounds that don’t heal

• More infections than usual

• Numbness or tingling in hands or feet

Over a long time, high blood sugar can lead to a wide range of serious complications, such as heart disease, stroke, amputation, and loss of eyesight. If diabetes is detected and treated early with medication, diet, and exercise, the risk of complications decreases, and the chances of living a long and healthy life increase.

ETIQUESTIONS

Handshake Etiquette.  What are the things I need to know to be professional when meeting new people?

First of all, meeting new people is so fun and important.  When shaking someone’s hand, don’t look away. Always make eye contact and give a firm, confident handshake.  Make sure the person knows you are present and interested.

There always seems to be a lot of confusion when it comes to wearing hats inside a building.  What is your suggestion when I am wearing a hat?  Do I take off?  Leave it on? Help.

What a great question.  It is always a good idea to remove your hat when entering a building.  I think the exceptions are when you are attending an event where hats are the theme.  For example, a western attire event or a big hat event.  In those cases, it is ok to leave your hat on since it is part of the event theme. Otherwise, it is best to remove your hat.

Thank you for being a loyal reader. We appreciate your support.  It is always a great idea to excuse yourself from the table and go to the restroom to apply makeup.  Lipstick and face powder should never be applied at the table.

I know you have shared lots of table etiquette before, but I keep forgetting about the rules for putting on my lipstick at the table.  Is it ok, or should I excuse myself every time I need to apply lipstick?

American Advertising Federation RGV is

striking out hungry among college students

That’s the situation many college-aged students find themselves in, an issue increasingly plaguing society, locally and nationally. The Agriculture Department states that some 20 million American college and university students face hunger or food insecurity, defined as limited or uncertain access to adequate food.

Unfortunately, this number is high and rising across the country. Studies show that students who face food insecurity or lack basic needs like housing are more likely to report experiencing poor physical health, symptoms of depression, and higher stress. These same studies show that food insecurity affects students’ academic performance and ultimately impacts graduation rates, which can negatively impact a whole community in the long run.

Fortunately, many colleges and universities in the RGV, from Starr County to Brownsville, provide hunger relief to its student populations through student food pantries. These pantries count on help from grants and donations, even partnerships with local food banks to keep shelves stocked.

This fall, the American Advertising Federation (AAF), an organization made up of advertising and marketing professionals, is taking on the challenge of increasing awareness of this issue and ensuring that students in the Rio Grande Valley don’t go hungry with its “Time to Give,

Grinches” bowling tournament with all proceeds going to food pantries at local colleges and universities.

“This is not a local problem. This is a serious national issue,” said AAF-RGV Chapter President Maria Alvarez. “RGV colleges and universities all have food pantries to help their students, and the AAF is doing its part to help these young men and women succeed at their education goals.”

To help these students fill their pantries and to keep college and university pantries stocked, especially throughout the holiday season, the AFF will host an ugly sweater bowling tournament on December 7 at Flamingo Bowl in McAllen.

Twenty-four teams will vie for bragging rights and help raise funds to fight hunger. Sponsorships are available, and teams of four can sign up for $150.

“It’s a chance to have fun, network with advertising folks, and all for a great cause,” said AAF board member and University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Professor Kimberly Selber. “If you can’t come out and bowl, you can still help by being a sponsor or even sending us an HEB gift card for the college food banks to distribute to students.”

To register your team, go online at aafrgv.org or to become a sponsor or donate, call Robin Bullard at 956-655-6824.

The Valley Scholars Program

The Valley Scholars Program was established in 1997 through a partnership between South Texas College, members of the local community, and representatives from business and industry. Its mission is to recognize and promote academic excellence by providing financial assistance and leadership development opportunities to academically gifted and highly motivated students.

The program recruits students from high schools within Hidalgo and Starr counties who graduate within the top 10% of their class or obtain an average of 80 or above. Program participants are supported throughout their studies with scholarship funding, specialized advisement, and community service opportunities as they work toward the completion of an associate degree.

More than 1,020 students have participated in the program and continued their education at premier universities around the state and nation.

“The Valley Scholars Program provided me with essential support to achieve my goal of earning a degree in medicine. It provided a mentor support system during times when I faced academic and financial obstacles.” - Dr. Belinda Hernandez.

SHELTER OF THE MONTH

Palm Valley Animal Society

Palm Valley Animal Society (PVAS) is the largest animal shelter in the Rio Grande Valley, taking in more than 15,000 pets every year. PVAS currently contracts with five cities and Hidalgo County at large to provide sheltering services for RGV pets in need. In addition to shelter services, PVAS also has a Pet Resources Center that provides self-

supported rehoming, food and pet supplies, access to virtual behavior training options, and much more to help keep pets out of the shelter and with their families. PVAS is working with its partners to create innovative ways to serve the needs of pets and their people and expand lifesaving shelter practices to have a safe, humane community.

You can melt with one look from Arko. His eyes are filled with so much warmth and gratitude. It’s almost unbelievable that he is going on 250 days in care. He enjoys being the center of attention and will bring joy to everyone he meets, in cluding other dogs. His high energy makes for a great companion in any aspect, whether you need a running partner or a pet for your pet.

Minda is looking for a big family she can call her own. She has been with us since July 2021, which is over 200 days! Minda is a very affectionate, mid-energy sweetheart. She would love to take some strolls around the neighborhood with the family.

Penny is a ‘lil cutie and would love to be adopted. She’s a very social girl but more of a low-energy dog overall. While she’s great at socializing with other dogs, she mostly enjoys exploring outside, but when around other dogs, she is very playful and tolerant with them. She loves treats and will even sit for them!

Septimus is a two-year-old male Coonhound. He’s a big boy weighing 61 pounds. He has been at PVAS since 2021 and is anxious to be adopted into a loving home. He is a sweet boy who loves to play and go for walks.

Vaqueros AND Cowboys

The early Mexican vaquero was not the romantic figure the cowboy would become in American culture nor those portrayed in Hollywood movies and dime novels.

The vaquero was a laborer riding a horse. As far back as the 1930s, television and movie cowboys like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and the Lone Ranger captured the viewer’s imagination and influenced the perception of the Old West. They were entertaining but a far cry from the real thing.

What began in the New World in 1521 when Gregorio Villalobos brought the first cattle to the banks of the Río Pánuco near present-day Tampico, Mexico, the skills used to harvest cattle and herding followed the trail of Spanish and Mexican settlement north to the banks of the Río Bravo/ Río Grande. Here, herding traditions developed as the demand for hides and

tallow shifted to include a demand for beef as a food source. Tools like the hocking knife were replaced by the lazo (lasso). Ironically, the equipment and tradition the vaquero developed over the next 200 years would become such a vital part of the iconic cowboy image of the present.

The stock saddle used by vaqueros and cowboys evolved from the Spanish Conquistador war saddle, which was not designed to be used with a lasso. The saddle designed for working cattle had distinctive features such as a strong high-peaked pommel with a horn ideal for wrapping a rope tightly to hold a wild cow and wide wooden stirrups to steady the rider. The wide-brimmed sombrero became the cowboy hat; the leather chaqueta became the brush jacket; and the wrapped leather leggings called botas later developed into cowboy boots and chaps to protect the rider’s legs from the thorny

chaparral. Espuelas (spurs) with large round, spiked rowels became synonymous with the vaquero. The cowboy’s spurs were generally smaller, both made a distinctive “jingle-jangle” when walking.

Let’s take a moment to tip our collective hats to the humble, hard-working Mexican vaqueros and American cowboys who, for centuries, have been working cattle in the borderlands of South Texas and northeastern Mexico and beyond.

SOCIALIFE RGV HISTORY

A

TOUCH

Quinta MAZATLAN

OF THE TROPICS THIS WINTER

Palms usually bring images of tropical vacations. Thankfully we live in a tropical environment with native Sabal Palms that are cold hardy. The stately Texas Sabal Palm grows up to 50 feet tall, but the evergreen grows slowly, only a couple of inches a year. Part of the trunk remains covered with old leaf stem “boots.” These “boots” form a crosshatch pattern on the trunk. The Palm can be distinguished from other palms by its long, smooth, non-thorny petioles (the transition between the stem and the leaf).

The Sabal Palm looks beautiful in a yard with its single tall trunk. The palms are wind, heat, and cold tolerant. The trees provide valuable food and nesting sites for birds and other wildlife all year long and are thus nicknamed the “Tree of Life.”

Once more abundant in the valley, the Sabal Palm forests have all but vanished under the plow. The

significant remaining stands are found at the Sabal Palm Sanctuary in Brownsville. Only two groves (less than 100 acres) have survived.

A fun fact, did you know petrified palm wood was named the official state stone of Texas? You can view these ancient fossils along the Prehistoric Trail at Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen. When you visit, you’ll also notice we’ve changed “Bougainvillea Blvd” to “Sabal Palm Drive” with 25 beautiful new Sabals.

The psalm “May you flourish like a palm tree” describes a wish for one to be green, growing tall to the skies, strong and flourishing. Think about gifting a palm or other native plant this holiday season. May YOU flourish like a palm!
