DEDICATED TO HELPING KEEP BODIES IN MOTION

If you are experiencing shoulder and knee problems, such as pain, swelling, motion limitations, or numbness, it may be time to schedule a visit with board-certified Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Physician Daniel Romanelli, MD, FAAOS, at South Texas Health System Clinics – Ortho South Texas.

Orthopedic Care: The Basics

Orthopedics covers care for a wide range of conditions, including anything affecting the body’s bones, muscles, tendons, and cartilage. Orthopedic treatment is common in sports since athletic injuries often affect the musculoskeletal system. Active people of all ages – from weekend warriors to casual participants – are susceptible, especially when activity is accompanied by insufficient warm-up or lack of conditioning.

Providing a Wide Range of Services

Dr. Romanelli uses various operative and non-operative treatments to improve or resolve acute or chronic musculoskeletal ailments to help heal patients and improve their quality of life.

Common orthopedic conditions that are managed conservatively or with surgery include:

• Shoulder and knee injuries

• Sports injuries

• Tendon injuries/ruptures

• Ligament, meniscus, cartilage injuries, and fractures

• Knee ligament injuries, such as ACL or meniscus tears

• Broken bones

His specific areas of focus include ACL, knee, and shoulder surgery, as well as meniscus repair, “Tommy John” surgery, and advanced cartilage procedures such as OAT and MACI.

What to Expect if Surgery Is Needed

The entire process — from your first visit to when you elect surgery through surgery scheduling, pre-op evaluation, the surgery itself, post-op recovery, and long-term follow-up — is completely tailored to each individual patient.

As your provider, Dr. Romanelli’s job is to educate you. He will help you make appropriate decisions about your care and explain what he’s doing, including how and why. He will also provide you with all the tools needed to stay informed, including written instructions, literature on the disease and treatment, and educational classes if you are undergoing joint replacement surgery.

More Than Two Decades of Experience

Dr. Romanelli is a board-certified Orthopedic and Sports Medicine physician with more than 22 years of experience. He earned his medical degree from New York Medical College and completed his fellowship training in Sports Medicine and Arthroscopic Surgery at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica, Calif. Dr. Romanelli has served as Orthopedic consultant for topperforming athletic programs such as the New Mexico State University (2004-2020) and the U.S. soccer team (2002-2013). He is a clinical assistant professor for the UTRGV School of Medicine and an Orthopedic consultant for UTRGV Athletics.

If you are feeling the effects of a condition such as a sports injury, shoulder injury, knee injury, meniscus tear, cartilage problems, or any number of other challenging conditions or injuries, know that Dr. Romanelli is nearby – ready to provide the care you need, when and where you need it most.

SPIRIT OF PHILANTHROPY

Robert and Janet Vackar donated $1M to UTRGV College of Liberal Arts, bolstering the Janet Ogden Vackar Spirit of Philanthropy Endowed Scholarship for mass communication students. Established in 2016, this legacy mirrors the Vackars’ values of hard work, community service, and generosity, inspired by their entrepreneurial parents. Janet, instrumental in the Bert Ogden Auto Group’s

marketing, believes in supporting students in reaching their goals. The Vackars’ continuous support for UTRGV resonates university-wide. Two other scholarship funds support business, entrepreneurship, and education students. In 2016, UTRGV named the Robert C. Vackar College of Business & Entrepreneurship in honor of the couple’s historic endowment.

UNITING COMMUNITY

The inaugural Rio Grande Habitat for Humanity Clay Shoot fundraiser was held on the evening of Friday, June 16, 2023, at El Dorado Sporting Clays in Edinburg, Texas. A terrific turnout of three-man teams attended, complimented by an array of delicious food and icy beverages that satiated everyone’s thirst. The event’s success was largely attributed to the support from their event sponsors, community partners, participants, and volunteers. With their collective help, Rio Grande Habitat for Humanity secured essential funding to advance its mission: to unite people in building homes and fostering community spirit while providing hope to families in the Rio Grande Valley who desperately need a safe, decent, and affordable home of their own.

Tiny Forests Bringing Nature Home

The City of McAllen-Quinta Mazatlan has planted two Tiny Forests in 2023, one at Cathey Middle School and one near the Palm View Community Center. Children and adults planted several thousand native plants onto what was previously invasive grass fields. Tiny Forests, which can be the size of a tennis court, help boost biodiversity and create a healthier learning and living environment for all. “We could not have done these Tiny Forests without the generous support of private donors,” says Colleen Hook, Executive Director of Quinta Mazatlan.

A lot of work goes into finding partners, locations, raising funds, preparing the ground, growing/planting the native plants, and follow-up care. Thanks to the Friends of Quinta Mazatlan, a non-profit board, donors from the Moon over Mazatlan Gala have now raised over $60,000 for two Schoolyard Tiny Forests, awarding Sam Houston Elementary with the second Tiny Forest to be planted in the Spring of 2024. “With our joint MISD partnership, our vision is for every school to have a Tiny Forest,” says Colleen Hook. These little wilderness areas will grow and attract beautiful birds and other wildlife. They will also offer a great learning experience for children to have a “living science lab” on their own school campus.

The support of the entire City of McAllen makes this urban greening initiative possible with special recognition to McAllen Parks & Recreation, Convention Facilities, Information Office, Public Utility, and Public Works.

Clearly, we all would love to see Tiny Forests popping up everywhere and would like to be involved. How to get involved? From donor gifts to gifts-in-kind to hands-on stewardship (planting, watering & weeding), you can help green and grow nature in our cities. By planting these Tiny Forests, we are bringing nature back home, and when nature does well, so do we.

Benefits of Tiny Forests

• Helps with Urban Heat Stress---The soil in a Tiny Forest can be up to 20 degrees cooler than the temperature of a city street.

• Reduces Air Pollution

• Improves Storm Water Management

• Produces Oxygen & Reduces Carbon Dioxide

• Supports Wildlife, Including Birds & Pollinators

• Spending Time in Nature Reduces Stress & Crime

• Kids Get Excited About Hands-On Learning at School

• Needs Minimal Maintenance After Establishment, as Nature Takes Over

AN EMBLEM OF HONOR

Robert C. Vackar and Janet Ogden Vackar’s spirit of community and compassion.

Robert C. Vackar and Janet Ogden Vackar are a testament to the transformational power of philanthropy. Their contributions have left an indelible impact on communities throughout the Rio Grande Valley. Their journey from successful business owners to generous supporters in their region provides a blueprint of service and giving.

The Vackars’ legacy stems from their thriving business, founded as an auto group by Janet’s father, Bert Ogden.

Starting as a single dealership in the 1960s by Ogden, the Vackars expanded the business to represent a multitude of automotive brands across numerous locations. Their exceptional business acumen led to significant success, allowing them to give back to their community. However, the Vackars’ story is not just one of business growth and success but also a testament to their commitment to the Rio Grande Valley and its residents.

Monument to Service

A monument to honor the legacy and military service of the founders of the Bert Ogden Auto Group, Bert Ogden, and his son-in-law, Robert C. Vackar, was recently unveiled at the group’s state-of-the-art Cadillac facility in Edinburg. The monument, a surprise project kept under wraps until its unveiling, is a visible testament to the dedication, vision, and commitment that have made the Bert Ogden Auto Group a household name in the auto industry.

Both Bert Ogden and Robert Vackar are veterans who served their nation with honor in the Korean and Vietnam wars, respectively. Their military service was a foundation for their shared values of hard work, commitment, and integrity, attributes that resonate in the business today. They firmly believed in giving back to their community and ensuring that their employees, particularly those who served in the military, were recognized for their contributions.

Designed with a keen eye for detail, the monument incorporates elements representing the Cadillac brand; it features the letters V and O for Vackar and Ogden, subtly blending the founders’ names with the brand they worked so tirelessly to build.

In a special ceremony honoring the veterans within the company, particularly those with over two decades of service, each received a commemorative brick identical to those used in the construction of the monument’s floor. This gesture was not only a token of recognition for their service but also a symbolic affirmation of their place within the Bert Ogden family.

Tragically, Bert Ogden and his wife Dorothy passed away in a 1992 car accident when a driver being pursued by police lost control of their vehicle.

43 www.socialifeRGV.com 97 SOCIALIFE RGV PRIDE

Lifelong Commitment

Further elevating the unveiling event was the presence of Texas State Representative Terry Canales, who presented a resolution from the Texas House of Representatives of the 87th Texas Legislature honoring Robert and Janet Vackar for their lifelong commitment to philanthropy in the Rio Grande Valley.

“Robert and Janet Vackar have demonstrated a lasting commitment to making the Rio Grande Valley a better place for all,” Canales read. “And in doing so, they’ve earned the deepest respect and appreciation of their fellow residents.”

This gesture underscored the profound impact of the Vackars’ generosity, which extends far beyond the confines of their business. The Vackars’ most significant philanthropic contributions are perhaps best manifested in their support for education. They firmly believe that quality education is

pivotal for social and economic growth. They have donated significantly to institutions like the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) to provide scholarships for local students. The Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship at UTRGV is named in recognition of their generous support, embodying their commitment to fostering the next generation of business leaders and entrepreneurs.

Robert C. Vackar and Janet Ogden Vackar’s philanthropy embodies the spirit of community and compassion. Their enduring commitment to the Rio Grande Valley has fostered an environment of growth, progress, and community spirit. Through their numerous philanthropic endeavors, they truly are pillars of the community, helping to shape a better, more vibrant future for the Rio Grande Valley. Their legacy continues to inspire others, proving that the spirit of giving can indeed create profound, positive change.

DID YOU KNOW

the last land battle of the Civil War was fought in the Rio Grande Valley?

During the Civil War, the Rio Grande served as a significant point of contention as skirmishes between both Union and Confederate forces erupted along the border between the military forts of Fort McIntosh in Laredo, Ringgold Barracks in Rio Grande City, and Fort Brown in Brownsville. It is an important facet of American History that the last land battle of the Civil War was fought along the Mexican border at Palmito Ranch near Brownsville, Texas.

Thanks to the CHAPS program at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, the Rio Grande Valley Civil War Trail is well documented and marked with signposts. This historical trail weaves its way through the picturesque landscapes of the Rio Grande Valley, offering visitors a unique opportunity to delve into the lesser-known aspects of the Civil War’s influence on this borderland. Far from the famous battlefields of the Eastern and Western theaters, this trail sheds light on the forgotten stories of a tumultuous era that shaped the Rio Grande Valley’s history.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

The Civil War, which raged from 1861 to 1865, was a turning point in American history. While the conflict primarily took place in the eastern United States, its influence extended far beyond, reaching the Rio Grande Valley. The region’s strategic location as a borderland between the Confederacy and Mexico made it an essential hub for military operations and played a significant role in the conflict.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE RIO GRANDE VALLEY

The Rio Grande Valley, located in the southernmost tip of Texas, encompasses the area along the Rio Grande River that separates the United States from Mexico. During the Civil War, the region was divided in its loyalties. While Texas seceded from the Union and joined the Confederate States of America in 1861, the Mexican population in the Rio Grande Valley largely sympathized with the Union cause due to its anti-slavery stance.

The Rio Grande River also served as a lifeline for trade and smuggling, and control of this waterway was a critical objective for both Union and Confederate forces. The Confederacy aimed to maintain control of the border to ensure the uninterrupted supply of goods to their forces, while the Union sought to blockade the river and weaken Confederate trade routes.

TRACING THE TRAIL

The Rio Grande Valley Civil War Trail takes history enthusiasts on a captivating journey through the region’s pivotal sites and landmarks. From Brownsville to Laredo, the trail winds its way through towns and countryside, offering visitors a chance to connect with the past and gain insights into the lives of the people who lived through those turbulent times. Here are just a few of the significant locations along the trail.

Fort Brown - Located in present-day Brownsville, Fort Brown was the site of the first battle of the Mexican-American War. During the Civil War, it served as a strategic outpost for both the Union and Confederacy at one time or another

The Treviño-Uribe Rancho - This historic ranch in San Ygnacio in Zapata Count was the site of a clash between Confederate troops and Juan Cortina of Brownsville in 1861.

Laredo - St. Augustine’s Plaza was a beehive of activity after Confederate officer Col. Santos Benavides established his headquarters there. Union forces attempted to destroy 5,000 bales of cotton stacked in the plaza when they attacked the town in March 1864 but were repelled in the Battle of Zacate Creek.

Mifflin Kenedy Warehouse - Built in 1854 near the steamboat landing in Rio Grande City, it served as an official Confederate port of entry, customhouse, and terminus of a cotton trail to Mexico. In 1864 Union forces captured the warehouse and Fort Ringgold.

Palmito Ranch Battlefield - Often referred to as the “Last Battle of the Civil War,” this site witnessed the final armed engagement of the war on May 12, 1865. It was a Confederate victory but occurred more than a month after General Lee’s surrender at Appomattox.

THREADS OF HISTORY:

THE STORY OF THE PALM WEAVING NEEDLE POINT

The Museum of South Texas History preserves hundreds of artifacts for their unique connection to the history and heritage of the borderlands. One of those artifacts within the collection is a needle point donated by Marcia Olivarez.

According to Olivarez, this needle was used to help weave palm leaves together to make a weather-proof roof for a palapa. Palapas, which are open structures with roofs made from palm fronds, were set up to shelter workers from the elements. They originated in the Philippines. The word palapa is a Tagalog word meaning palm leaf. The Spanish colonizers brought this structure to Nuevo España, or Mexico, and they

have been used ever since.

The process of weaving a roof for the palapas involved feeding a palm frond through the eye of the needle, and then the needle would be fed through the roof and back down again, weaving the fronds together

This needle was used on El Rucio Ranch in Rio Grande City by Olivarez’s grandfather.

Currently, this artifact is kept in the museum’s collections storage with plans for future display. Stay tuned for more details on the museum’s website www. mosthistory.org.

On June 21, 2023, the Mission Police Department hosted a delightful event, “Donuts with Chief Torres.”

The event gave residents a unique opportunity to connect with local law enforcement. This event showcased the commitment of the Mission Police Department to community engagement.

Kids engaged in entertaining activities such as coloring with a cop, capturing memorable moments with McGruff, and even exploring the inner workings of the police department through guided tours. Events like these are invaluable, strengthening the foundation of trust and understanding between law enforcement and the community they serve. By coming together, sharing conversations over a donut, or engaging in fun activities, the bonds between officers and residents continue to grow stronger.

ETIQUESTIONS

Thank you so much for your question and for sharing how the information is helpful to you. Etiquette means behaving in a customary and polite way while engaging with other people in various personal, social, and professional situations. Topics like punctuality and table manners can be sources of frustration for people. Learning proper etiquette can boost your confidence and allow you to enjoy the situation without the worry that you are doing something wrong. Thanks for reading! I hope you continue to learn useful information for your success and happiness.

I have a family member who has become increasingly negative and angry as she has gotten older. While I love her dearly and don’t want to agitate her, she is becoming more and more difficult for me to be around. Are there any etiquette rules for handling such a situation? This family member often accompanies me to social events, and it is getting uncomfortable with her train of thought and conversations. Help, what do I do?

Thank you for your comment and your question. I think many people have paid more attention to personal space issues since COVID. People’s need for personal space varies greatly from person to person. For example, research tells us that people who live in big cities need less personal space than people who live in more rural areas. While there is no exact etiquette rule regarding personal space, a great guide is to allow about 4 feet between you and the next person if you do not know what the person is. It is also worth noting that while we want to maintain a healthy space between us and others, we also want to be mindful about touching other people’s things without permission. Watch body language, and you can usually tell if someone thinks you are invading their personal space. Be mindful and polite, and give people some space if they seem to need/want it.

Change the Subject! One of the most powerful etiquette communication lessons is learning how to change the subject in any given conversation in a way that does not seem rude. Changing the subject can be challenging, but it is a powerful skill to have. One of the best ways to change the subject is to select another topic of conversation and just begin talking about it. You can usually begin with, “Oh! Before I forget....” You will want to change the subject to talk about something your family member loves. For example, talk about children or grandchildren, as they can rarely do anything wrong. Changing the subject allows everyone to enjoy time and conversations with each other and is a great way to show consideration for others.

I have been enjoying your Etiquette article for months now, but I am always wondering...what exactly is etiquette? I mean, I understand that there are rules and processes to follow, but I don’t really know what Etiquette is about. This concept is very new to me, and I am very interested because I find myself attending many social and professional functions, and I feel like I might have some things to learn about proper table manners, etc. Thanks for the great articles; they are helping this reader.
Since COVID, I have been super sensitive to personal space. I feel like people are crammed into small rooms at social events and gatherings, and it makes me nervous. Is there an etiquette rule about personal space? If so, how do we share that information with others? I feel like people often invade my personal space, and it makes me very uncomfortable

NON-PROFIT SPOTLIGHT

The McAllen Heritage Center, Inc. – Museum of History & Culture (MHC) Celebrates 15 years in service to the community: 2008-2023

TheMcAllen Centennial festivities held in 2004 included a festival at Archer Park and a dinner gala celebrating McAllen’s 100 years of history. Due to the success of these events, Centennial committee members began discussions towards developing a place for the community to enjoy learning about McAllen’s past. McAllen Heritage Center, Inc. (MHC) was formed in early 2006 as a not-for-profit corporation for this purpose, with a founding board comprised of a core of Centennial committee members.

From 2006 to 2008, the founding board completed the work involved in the establishment of the museum, which included securing and caring for the base collection until such time as a museum location was determined. The board also engaged in a successful fundraising campaign in the community to raise seed money necessary to fund the initial operations of the museum.

MHC opened to the public in June 2008 and is located at the beautiful and historic former McAllen Post Office, built in 1935 in downtown McAllen at the corner of Main St. and Chicago. The building is a historic landmark designated by the Texas Historical Commission.

This year, MHC is celebrating an important 15-year anniversary milestone. MHC has accomplished much to be proud of, including but not limited to the expansion of historical exhibits, the development of rotating exhibitions in partnership with Humanities Texas, The Valley Land Fund, Museum of South Texas History, the RGV Veterans Photo Project, and the UTRGV

Chaps Program.   The museum store “La Tiendita” opened in 2012 and, since 2021, has also been online.  Proceeds from La Tiendita directly benefit the MHC mission. Inventory includes an array of historical books about McAllen and the region, books by local authors, and works by local artisans along with “Everything McAllen” such as tee shirts, caps, magnets, postcards, candles, and so much more.

The museum’s annual fundraiser, “Chuckwagon Dinner,” is a tremendous success, and the partnership with the Costillas Ltd group/Macaroni Grill is a great asset to the museum’s mission.

In 2020, a major renovation at the south end of the building resulted in new restroom facilities, a meeting room, an expanded exhibit area, and a laundry area. The entrances to the remodeled areas were enhanced by the gorgeous tile work murals commissioned by the museum to our local artist, Yolanda Cantu. MHC leadership and the City also completed beautification projects for the exterior of the facility, including the La Placita Park and “Greetings from McAllen” mural dedication and new outdoor spotlights. The beautiful mural and photo spot is a rendition of a circa 1930s postcard and was commissioned by MHC to local artist Lupe Hernandez.

CHILL OUT! NAVIGATING YOUR DOG’S SUMMER FUN AMID RGV’S RECORD HEAT

With the record-setting temperatures we’ve been having here in the RGV this summer, having safe activities to do with your canine companion outdoors can be challenging. So how can you keep your pet entertained and cool at the same time? Here are some helpful tips for keeping your dog busy, spending energy, and avoiding the scorching southern Texas heat.

Take your dog for a walk early in the AM or later in the PM. One misconception is that when the air temperature is warm, they think the asphalt is okay to take their dog for a walk. However, asphalt can be much hotter than the air because it absorbs heat quickly. See the table below from Four Paws for reference:

Moreover, a study by Frostburg University revealed that concrete, which most sidewalks are made from, can reach of temperature of 104 °F / 40 °C. Under similar conditions, brick can get as hot as 109.4°F / 43 °C and asphalt 124 °F/ 51 °C.

To test how hot asphalt is, place the back of your hand on it. If the back of your hand can stand the heat, it is safe for your dog. If not, it’s too hot. Why the back of your hand? Because that part of your hand has thin skin and is more like your dog’s paws.

Provide your dog with free access to water. Even if your dog is an indoor dog and your house is climate-controlled, it will be thirsty and will need to stay hydrated. This is especially true when your dog returns from the outside after a potty break.

If your dog loves water, an unused kiddie pool is a great place to cool down. They are available at Walmart for about $17 if you don’t have one.

Speaking of water, if you’d rather take your dog to a lake, a bigger pool, or the beach, don’t forget their safety vest. Your dog’s vest must fit, so always measure your dog if ordering it online or take your dog to a pet store so they can try it on.

Find indoor activities to keep your dog busy such as puzzle toys. One toy is called a Busy Box Dog Toy. This type of toy has a bottom layer containing a dog snuffle or dog puzzle, a middle layer that includes dog-enrichment toys like a Kong, and a top layer with toys that squeak or crinkle. There is even a bonus layer that contains food/treats that are easily accessible to encourage dogs to solve from the start! There are different difficulty levels for these puzzles, so choose accordingly.

When your dog needs to cool down, it will look to cool down its chest. That is why you’ll see them lay flat on tile or concrete in the shade. If you’re outside, splash water over their chest instead of putting water over their head to cool them down. Be extra careful if you have a dog sensitive to heat, such as a bulldog (they can overheat) or a Mexican Hairless (they easily sunburn).

Multiple local weather forecasts suggest that the weather in the RGV will improve from the extreme heat in October. For now, I hope you and your canine companion stay safe and stay cool!
