Throughout her career, she has helped build high-performing teams, develop service lines, increase revenue in competitive markets, and build healthy organizational cultures. Additionally, Montes-Ewing has demonstrated strengths in attracting talent, driving overall performance, and championing a high-quality patient experience. “It is a privilege to have been selected to lead STHS McAllen, and I look forward to working closely with staff and physicians at the facility to continue to provide nationally recognized healthcare at the highest level to the residents of the City of McAllen and its surrounding communities,” says Montes-Ewing. “As an integrated network of care, South Texas Health System has a strong reputation in the community, and I’m honored and excited to usher in a new

Lone Star National Bank:
A 40-Year Legacy of Service, Innovation, and Community Commitment By Dr. Kimberly Selber
This year marks a significant milestone for Lone Star National Bank (LSNB) as it celebrates more than 40 years of service. This journey has been more than just about banking; it’s a testament to LSNB’s unwavering commitment to its customers and the communities it serves. The story of LSNB is one of resilience, innovation, and a deeprooted connection to the heart of Texas.

SOCIALIFE RGV PRIDE
The Foundation of Success From its beginnings in 1983 in a small 3,000-square-foot space with just ten employees, LSNB has understood that customer service is at the core of banking. This philosophy has driven the bank’s growth and success over four decades and to a team of over 700 employees throughout San Antonio and deep South Texas. LSNB has continually evolved to meet changing needs while maintaining the essence of relationship banking, fostering trust and loyalty with individual customers and business owners alike. Chairman Alonzo Cantu, along with longstanding board members and President S. David Deanda, Jr., instills “relationship banking,” which is at the heart of LSNB’s approach to everything. The LSNB REWARDS program is a perfect example of this commitment. Irma Chapa, Senior Vice President and Marketing Director at LSNB, explains, “This isn’t just about the usual banking benefits but exclusive services only offered by our bank. We’re offering rewards that truly align with what our customers want and need in their lives.” The LSNB REWARDS program, various customer-focused efforts, and an upcoming overhaul of its website highlight LSNB’s continuous effort to improve inperson and digital interactions with its customers. “Banking representatives enjoy heading out into our communities weekly, coloring the streets in LSNB blue, to visit established clients and garner new business with attractive campaigns.”
skills for financial success. The bank understands the value of this education in fostering the long-term financial health of its clients. This year, the bank’s Marketing Department has innovatively redesigned its educational programs for elementary and junior high school students. These revamped presentations are part of a proactive approach to engage with students directly in their classrooms, taking them on an enlightening journey through the essentials of financial management. “We are dedicated to ‘sharing the wealth’ of financial knowledge in diverse and impactful ways,” Chapa stated.
In its commitment to enhancing financial literacy, Lone Star National Bank has launched initiatives aimed at educating individuals in effective financial management. These efforts are part of the bank’s broader strategy to empower community members with the necessary knowledge and

Staying Ahead in a Dynamic Era The last few decades have seen a seismic shift in the banking industry, primarily due to the advent of digital technology. “LSNB has been at the forefront of embracing this digital transformation,” states Chapa. “The bank’s online and mobile banking platforms are designed with user convenience and accessibility in mind, allowing customers to manage their finances seamlessly from anywhere.” Beyond digital convenience, LSNB understands the critical importance of customer support. With its 24/7 customer service, the bank ensures that help is always a call or click away. It is important to note while recognizing the benefits of technology, LSNB doesn’t sacrifice the importance of the human touch. This approach is complemented by a growing team in Mortgage, Insurance Services, and Wealth Management. “A team of financial experts spearheaded by industry veteran Britt Woods offers personalized financial advice to clients in an

increasingly impersonal digital world,” Chapa proudly states. In 2007, Woods was named one of the top 50 financial advisors in the country and, in 2013, ranked the number one program manager in the US by Bank Investment Consultant Magazine. Digital security is a top priority for everyone. With the rise in fraud in digital transactions, LSNB is implementing sophisticated security measures to protect client data and financial transactions, including multi-factor authentication and ongoing cybersecurity updates. “Lone Star National Bank’s adaptation to the digital era goes beyond offering online services,” Chapa notes. “It encompasses a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes accessibility, security, innovation, and client education.” By staying agile and responsive to clients’ evolving needs in the digital realm, the bank continues to reinforce its commitment to delivering exceptional customer service in the modern banking landscape.

Community Growth and Development Lone Star National Bank’s influence extends beyond banking services; it is pivotal in fueling local economies and fostering community development. The bank’s growth has enabled it to amplify its support for local businesses, job creation, and community investment. To be a catalyst of change, you’ve also got to be of service to the community. LSNB employees are front and center in this initiative. In 2023 alone, they spent over 13,000 hours volunteering from South Padre Island and Brownsville to Roma and San Antonio. In addition to logging community service hours, LSNB has over 100 employees participating in runs, walks, and marathons all over the region. The running group just celebrated their tenth anniversary, and they do not show any signs of slowing down. “These initiatives and the
level of commitment and support that LSNB management channels toward social causes,” Chapa explains, “have helped attract and retain long-term employees and foster a culture of giving back.” Along with community service, LSNB has continuously championed local entrepreneurs. “We are committed to the growth and sustainability of small enterprises that are critical to stimulating economic growth in the community,” Chapa emphasized. Recently, the bank received an “Outstanding” rating for its “Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) examination from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) for Lending and Investments. Lone Star National Bank is the only large bank in Texas to receive this distinction.
Transforming the Future As LSNB looks to the future, its goals are clear: to uphold its legacy of exceptional customer service, innovate in response to technological advancements, and deepen its impact on the community. The bank is poised to embrace new technologies, introduce innovative financial solutions, and continue its commitment to financial education and empowerment. The 40th anniversary of Lone Star National Bank in 2023 is more than a milestone; it’s a celebration of a journey marked by dedication, innovation, and community spirit. The board members have grown this financial institution into the shining star it is today and are an integral part of the lives of employees, customers, our community, and the businesses it serves. As it embarks on the next chapter of its journey, LSNB remains committed to its core values, promising to continue its legacy of excellence and transformation for decades to come.

Consider Making NatureMinded Resolutions By Colleen Hook, Executive Director, Quinta Mazatlan
Happy 2024! A new year means a fresh start to focus on the health and well-being of yourself, your family, and your environment. We hope your list includes spending more time in nature with your family. The benefits are many, from physical and mental health to just plain fun, and you never know who will cross your path. Here are some nature-minded suggestions for you to enjoy this year!
1 Go On a Nature Hike Once a Month The historic Quinta Mazatlan in McAllen is surrounded by nature trails and is home to many beautiful birds. In addition to Wild Walks, join the Speaker Series Talks, Yoga, and Tai Chi in the Park! Explore other nature centers, including the nine World Birding Center sites, Santa Ana NWR, Laguna Atascosa NWR, and more outdoor excursions in the Rio Grande Valley.
2 Small Sustainable Actions Small actions can have a big impact when it comes to helping preserve our planet’s natural resources. Consider ways to reduce your use of plastic and other single-use items. Start a recycling program at your office. About 75% of what we throw away can be recycled, so we could make a huge difference by recycling. Encourage everyone by providing plenty of highly visible, clearly marked recycling containers. Begin with recycling paper and cardboard, as these make up one-quarter of all trash in the U.S. Recycling paper is the easiest way your business can do its part for the environment.
66 38

SOCIALIFE RGV PRIDE
3 Stewardship Opportunities Many organizations would LOVE to welcome you to their volunteer program. Quinta Mazatlan offers stewardship programs onsite and off-site at our Tiny Forests around McAllen. Re-foresting is a great way to learn the names of plants and how to plant them properly in your own yard. Volunteer Tuesdays and Thursdays at Quinta Mazatlan starting at 9 AM and Tiny Forest Saturdays on the 4th Saturday of each month.
4 Convert 10% of Your Lawn to Native Plants Consider removing some of your turf grass and converting it into small garden beds attracting birds and butterflies. Pollinators and other flower visitors need pollen and nectar throughout their lives. Follow Quinta Mazatlan on social media for announcements on Backyard Habitat Steward workshops, classes, and native plant sales.
5 Plant Plant Plant Our local and global animals need plants for survival. You could plant at home, on a local property with permission, or at a neighboring school or workplace. Our native trees are beautiful and provide food, nesting sites, and shade! They are the most natural solution to addressing the heat stress in our cities. Research has shown that temperatures in the summertime can be 20 degrees cooler in forested areas versus on streets and pavement. More than half the world’s population now lives in cities; by 2050, almost 70 percent will be urbanized. Cities that plant trees will be more resilient, healthy, and livable. We can enhance our lives and the lives of wildlife around us in a simple way—JUST PLANT MORE TREES! Now, one more resolution: we recommend you follow Quinta Mazatlan on social media for announcements on Stewardship Opportunities, Thursday Night Speakers, Gardening/Birding Workshops, Saturday STEM Stops for Kids, Native Plants Sales, Yoga & Tai Chi Classes, Rare Bird Sightings & More. Quinta Mazatlan is a mansion with a mission to restore one native backyard at a time. We wish you a happy and healthy New Year!

CITY OF MISSION SPREADS HOLIDAY JOY In the spirit of giving, the City of Mission celebrated December with a series of events that brought the community together. One of the initiatives was the “Operation Christmas: Adopt a Grandparent,” aimed at spreading joy to local nursing homes. The overwhelming response from the community, with over 600 generous donations, allowed the city to assemble special care packages for the elderly, ensuring they felt cherished during the holiday season. Another remarkable event was the Mission Police Department’s “Kops for Kids Toy Drive.” This initiative not only brought smiles to the faces of hundreds of children but also created a festive atmosphere at the Mission Event Center. These events underscore Mission’s dedication to prioritizing its residents’ well-being and quality of life, exemplifying the true spirit of community engagement.

DID YOU KNOW
La Sal del Rey’s salt deposits have been used since prehistoric times? By Dr. Kimberly Selber | Photos by Larry Ditto
What do Salt of the Earth, salary, and salad have in common? If you guessed salt, you’re right! But what does salary have to do with salt? Back in the day, Roman legionnaires were paid in salt – salarium, the Latin origin of the word “salary.” Folklore tells us that sprinkling salt in a new home will ward off unwanted spirits or bad omens. And if someone has overstayed their welcome, just throw salt behind their back, and it will make them leave. Salt is an important commodity along with a social necessity. But did you know there is a rich salt oasis in the Rio Grande Valley?

ust south of the South Texas sand sheet lies an ancient and unique natural wonder, La Sal del Rey. This shallow salt lake, a product of millennia, forms part of the Lower Rio Grande Valley National Wildlife Refuge, attracting vis itors with its intriguing geology, history, and vibrant wildlife. This site, one of three such salt lakes in the region, is the only one open to the public, offering a fascinating glimpse into a natural process that has been ongoing for thousands of years. The lake’s origins trace back to the Pleistocene/Holocene transition, approximately 12,000 to 11,000 years ago. During this period, a drier and windier climate led to the formation of this wind-carved depression. Below it lies distinctly saline groundwater, which feeds the lake. The salinity of the lake’s water varies dramatically throughout the year, from a low of 4 parts per thousand (PPT) when nearly full to an astonishing 420 PPT as it dries, which is over ten times saltier than seawater. This seasonal cycle alternates between a deep, brimming lake and a vast, dry salt flat. As the lake dries up, a salt crust up to 20 cm thick forms, creating a stark white landscape. This salt crust is a dynamic feature, cracking and forming pressure ridges up to 0.3 meters high as it accommodates the volume expansion of the forming salt. Seeing these ridges extending for tens of meters in various directions is a marvel. Additionally, selenite (gypsum) crystals, a
Ariel view of Sal del Rey.
mere 3 cm long and surprisingly flexible, often appear on the lake’s margins. La Sal del Rey’s salt deposits have been used since prehistoric times. Maps from the 1700s document the quarrying and trading of salt from this lake, highlighting its long-standing economic significance. The lake’s name, “The King’s Salt,” originates from Spanish colonial times when mineral resources were considered the crown’s property. During the US Civil War, the state of Texas assumed control of the salt extraction, and in 1866, a constitutional amendment privatized mineral rights in Texas, paving the way for the lake’s salt and other resources to be developed privately. Salt trade from the lake continued into the 1930s, and the brine was also used in oil and gas operations. The question of why these salt lakes exist has been a topic of scientific curiosity. Contrary to the previously held belief that they sit atop a salt dome, extensive drilling and seismic exploration by oil companies have revealed no such structure. A more plausible explanation is the continuous concentration of brine due to the lake’s basin extending below the normal groundwater level and the region’s hot, semi-arid climate. Today, La Sal del Rey is a popular destination for those interested in wildlife, geology, and history. The best access is from the southern
Salt crystals found on the bank of Sal del Rey.
entrance off Texas Route 186, followed by a 1.6 km hike to the lake’s center. Visitors can walk on the salt crust, witness the formation of salt crystals, and observe the unique ecosystem that thrives in this extreme environment. The sight of Artemia salina (brine shrimp) eggs accumulating on the lake’s margins and the seasonal transformation of the lake’s appearance offer a unique and memorable experience. To learn more about Sal del Rey and other “Ancient Landcapes of South Texas: Hidden in Plain Sight” visit the CHAPS program at UTRGV.

SOCIALIFE RGV HISTORY
The Citrus Theater Kelly Francis-Love, museum archivist
T
he Citrus Theater has been an Edinburg landmark for as long as most people remember.
Many have fond memories of seeing movies there as a child or as a great location for a date. However, many do not know the story behind this historic theater. Velma and Dr. L.J. Montague created the theater. They purchased the site of the former Valley Theater in 1933 with hopes of creating the nicest and fanciest theater south of San Antonio. In 1939, in a now infamous story, Dr. Montague shot and killed his wife, Velma. He was acquitted on the charge of murder as the shooting was deemed to be an accident, and construction of the theater continued. The doctor’s medical office was above the theater, while the area beneath the balcony was used as a darkroom to develop X-rays. The theater was 9,000 square feet and had 816 chairs, 500 at the bottom and the rest in the balcony. The projector room was on the south side of the balcony. The theater opened on Jan. 17, 1941, with a black-tie affair. In December of the same year, Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, and the United States entered World War II. In those days before televisions were commonplace, The Citrus Theater was a common place for Valley residents to receive updates on what was happening in the war. The cool, air-conditioned theater was also a place to relax and distract from overseas events.
66
www.socialifeRGV.com
The classics Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon premiered here in 1941. In the 1950s, George “Dock ” Boyle was the theater manager. He was a former vaudeville actor who hosted shows at the theater. He believed in doing good for the community and often opened the theater for free events. During the turbulent era of the 1960s, the theater was still thriving, showing all the latest news and movies. Mike Benitez of Edinburg purchased the theater in 1978 and continued ownership until it closed its doors in 1994. Here at the Museum of South Texas History, one can still see The Citrus Theater in its glory days. The Dock Boyle Collection shows photographs from his time as manager in the 1950s. There are documents that were gathered for the purpose of applying for historic status, including insurance records, tax records, and property valuations. Former owner Felipe García wrote a short history of the theater. And, of course, there are articles about the Dr. Montague case. Currently, the theater is under restoration through community leaders Nick Cantú and Renee Sánchez Leal. You can learn more about their restoration efforts by watching the June 2022 edition of Museum Pláticas at www.youtube.com/mosthistoryorg/playlists.

SERENATA A LA VIRGEN: A HARMONIOUS CELEBRATION OF ART, MUSIC, AND HERITAGE
Photography by: Tiffany Miranda
On December 10th, the Gelman Stained Glass Museum held Serenata a La Virgen with Mariachi 7 Leguas—a celebration to honor the Virgen de Guadalupe. Celebrated annually on December 12 as a Catholic feast day and Mexican national holiday, the day honors Mary’s apparition in 1531 to Juan Diego, an Aztec peasant and convert to Christianity. The harmonious blend of music and art, coupled with the cultural importance of the day, created an unforgettable experience. This successful night promises an annual tradition, uniting music, art, and heritage for years to come.

WHAT THE!~
ETIQUESTIONS Dr. Barbara Baggerly-Hinojosa
I always find it rude when people are texting or talking on their phones while we are at the dining table. What is the rule about phone usage when you are seated at a dining table? Telephone usage is such a part of our lives these days. It is a great idea to text or talk on the phone before you are seated for dinner. Once you sit at the dining table, put your phone away and return to it. It is considered rude to talk on the phone or text while at the dining table. If you are in a situation where you need to take a call or text, excuse yourself to go to the bathroom before reaching for your phone.
I am always thankful when exiting an elevator, and the people waiting to get on the elevator give me room to get out before they start getting on the elevator. It seems proper to do that, but is there some kind of elevator etiquette we all should know about? Elevator etiquette is a real thing! It is always a good idea to wait for people to exit the elevator before you try and get on. Give them some room, smile, and be patient as they all exit before you get on the elevator.
During a recent party, I noticed someone at my table cutting up his entire steak into many small pieces before he began eating. That made me wonder if I was breaking some etiquette rule by not doing that. What is the rule about cutting up our food? According to etiquette experts at Emily Post, you are only supposed to cut up one piece of food at a time. That means if you intend on eating three pieces of steak in a row, you should take the time between bites to cut your food into small pieces.

ishing’s Future is on a mission to connect youth and family with nature through fishing adventures that strengthen family relationships, build stewardship of the environment, and provide positive outdoor angeling education for families. In 2007, Shane Wilson, a thirty-four-plus-year-old educator, decided to combine his professional training and his love of fishing to help parents reconnect with their children, and a new non-profit organization was born on South Padre Island. The focus of Fishing’s Future is to teach a family how to fish together and enjoy the excitement of catching fish and spending time together. There is no better activity than to go outside, sit on a bank, and wait for that tug on the end of the line while soaking up the sun, feeling a soft breeze, and spending quality time with loved ones. From hosting family fish camps and children’s fishing events to running educational programs endorsing ethical practices such as ‘Catch and Release,’ Fishing’s Future has blossomed into a transformative platform. Now, with more than 70 chapters across the United States and Great Britain and over one million participants, Fishing’s Future is setting in motion a tidal wave of change, equipping today’s youth and families to be the stewards of tomorrow’s environment. In 2022, Fishing Future added another branch to the evergrowing tree that focuses on mobility-disabled individuals and families. The “ICAN” initiative is a 26-foot tri-tune vessel

PET LIFE
AVOIDING CHILLY PAWS INGENIOUS INDOOR EXERCISE TIPS FOR YOUR DOG THIS WINTER By Dr. Ruben Castro Happy New Year! It is a new year, and in the RGV, according to U.S. Climate Data, the months of January and February, on average, are the coldest. So, how can you ensure your dog gets the exercise they need when the weather is too cold? Here are some tips you can try with your dog so they can exercise indoors:
1
This first one is a mental exercise. Order some dog puzzles from Amazon that will keep your dog mentally focused and stimulated when they seek and sniff out the tasty treats you have hidden in the puzzle. These dog puzzles also serve as an excellent accessory for a bored dog. There are many to choose from, so it would be beneficial to check them out.
2
Use house steps/stairs. If you have a two-story home, you can use the steps for exercise with your dog. Throw their favorite toy up to the top and have them run after it and bring it back down. If you have a small to medium dog, three to five round trips will be adequate for their physical exercise. You can do this twice or thrice daily, depending on their energy level. If you have a larger dog, increase their round trips to about 10, twice, or three times a day, depending on their energy level. Be mindful of dogs with bad joints or hip dysplasia, such as German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, French Bulldogs, and Pugs, among others.
3
Hide and seek. If your dog knows how to SIT and STAY on command, you can put them in a SIT-STAY and go hide their favorite toy or treat and then have them find it. If your dog does not know any commands, then teaching them to understand and execute vocal commands is a great psychological exercise for them and will tire them.
4
Agility course running for small dogs. If you’d like to up the ante, you can purchase an agility tunnel that your dog runs through, and you can also add other obstacles to make them go around and over. This is a great time to use the furniture and any objects around your home to add to your dog’s obstacle course.
There are other things to consider to help your dog get mentally and physically spent when the weather is too cold. Some dogs love the cold weather, so if you have one of these, just be mindful of the amount of time they spend outside. Also, remember that the bottom of dogs’ paws are very sensitive, and cold asphalt can be very uncomfortable for them. Lucky for us, the RGV rarely experiences extremely cold weather. Stay safe, and stay warm.

OJI: Oji is the Japanese word for “prince,” and Oji really is one. He is a handsome, friendly gentleman. Born in July 2020, he weighs about 55 pounds. Oji is house-trained and walks well on a leash. He likes to play fetch and is eager to please. His beautiful soft fur and fluffy tail are a pleasure to watch and pet. OLIVER: Oliver was born in March of 2021 and weighs about 13 pounds. He is an adventurous fellow who loves to climb to the top of his cat tower and survey his world. With people, he is comfortable telling you what he wants and will sweetly chatter when he craves your attention. He is very social and will sit on your lap if you keep petting him. He even likes getting belly rubs. He enjoys the companionship of other cats and plays well with his buddies. Oliver is eager to find his forever home where he can be the king of his castle.
